I read several reviews about this place before I went. What I gathered was: huge sushi. It's really nothing until you actually see it!! But don't be fooled by the outside this place is actually delicious and affordable. I've had bad sushi in my day and this one is not on that list what so ever! I actually really really like it, if you're on the fence about it go and try it! I guarantee you'll like it! The service was good and our server was nice!

We are here yesterday around 3 o'clock & by 4 we were already filling sick. We picked this place because it had the best rating & reviews in town but turned out to be awful! The sushi wasn't that good & the atmosphere was just awkward. The sushi chef stood there on his phone for 5 mins after getting our order before starting on it. Then when we got our food it was very unpleasant to the eye. It looked like a toddler trying making it. We ordered the Tiger roll, it was supposed to have crab in the middle but instead it had a synthetic crab salad in the middle like the kind you buy in a tub at a grocery store. Their portion size was just too much & was obviously trying to hide the false fish taste with so much rice. Let's just say how sick we are was definitely not worth it. We will not be returning!

Quantity over quality. The art (and taste) of sushi is not a concern here and it's obvious. The fish quality is low so it is masked with larger portions and obscene amounts of rice. Rice in sushi is the most important part of sushi but that doesn't mean use more than you are suppose to.

I love sushi and this is my favorite place for it. My kids also love the tempura shrimp. The atmosphere and service are perfect as well.

The experience was better than anticipated. I think the prior reviews have it nailed. We had read about the size of the rolls and we're still surprised when they came out. Huge and hard to eat. But good! The Korean BBQ was not as spicy as I would have liked. But still good! I would return.

Delicious !!!!! Very very good sushi !!!! Not the fastest meal but sooo worth the wait!!! The Yakasoba was to die for as well...don't come for the ambiance ... But the food makes up for the lack of ambiance ...

Their rolls are like massive rice filled burritos oh fishy goodness! Great quality of fish and service but definitely not for the faint of heart who prefer dainty rolls! Moby dick and Roseburg rolls are great!

  • Lydia B.

Let's start with the good, the tempura sushi rolls are delicious, though not traditional, they are really tasty (just order them with extra eel sauce on the side). The miso is perfect comfort food. Also, they are the only sushi restaurant in Roseburg, but the bad outweighs the good sadly. The atmosphere is tragically cold, the place is always empty, so it is exceedingly quiet because they do not play music, and the customer service is sub par. As for the food, the sushi rolls are too big to enjoy, they fall apart and you cannot eat the multiple ingredients together, but only as seperate components. It's a terrible place for a date because they food is messy, and most of the non sushi items on the menu are only OK. I would suggest getting take out if you do like the food, because the service and atmosphere are as bland as the salads.

  • Julia M.

The rolls are HUGE! The sushi tastes amazing, but it's difficult to eat because it falls apart. Not a big deal, definitely a first world problem. The staff was very friendly. The service was okay, but only because they were so busy and it didn't seem like they had enough staff to accommodate all customers. I would definitely go back if I ever found myself in Roseburg again.

  • Wella A.

Sushi is supposed to look pretty. The few rolls and nigiri we ordered just looked obscenely obese. There was an exceeding amount of rice that I had to shave off. If you prefer your sushi to be "burrito style" then this is the joint for you. The fish wasn't terrible, but I prefer to admire the cuts and not have it looked butchered (I can make it myself that way).

    (2)
  • Jessie S.

Holy crap these rolls are huge!!! The place was completely empty, but the staff was really nice and everything was very well priced! Stopping here was the best thing I've done in a while!

OK ...So thanks to the other reviews here on Yelp....I walked from the Holiday Inn Express into downtown Roseburg. Ami Japanese Restaurant was easy to find....It was a Tuesday night and they were pretty slow. So I order a couple of rolls and a Tobiko. The guy says "Why don't you order just one roll, and see if you really want another after that one" ....OK DAMN! the rolls are HUGE! ...I swear the rolls here are as big as my forearm, so if you go here, come hungry. The sushi was very good, but I couldn't finish the damn thing, let alone pick it up....kind of overkill in my opinion. I did have a funny conversation with the sushi chefs though...they are father and son (btw). They asked how I found them and I explained "Yelp" to them ....they needed spelling a couple of times, but they said that they would check "Yelp" out.

Food was delicious. The Vegas Roll is huge. Japanese speaking people yell at you when you come in, which is slightly scary. Fortunately there was one woman there who spoke English and was nice. She did come over to our table way too often. Still, I will definitely be going back.

Are you kidding me? I almost wonder if the owner thought they could get away with such weird sushi because Roseburg doesnt have any other sushi? We passed through recently and did not enjoy our experience. I asked for my rolls small, which I do all the time here at home... Well the rolls were gigantic, basically a sushi burrito, absolutely horrible to eat, cutting it into pieces eith a fork. and the prices were higher than typical sushi places in Portland.

  • Lapis E.

Whoa, if u love big slabs of salmon then order the nigiri! U won't be displeased. I then ordered the Udon with tempura...Spicy! Be careful if your not of fan of the burning tongue. Overall this was a great find in a Hicky kinda town. PS bring a biz card, once u see their wall you'll know Y. No worries if sushi isn't for u, there's Korean BBQ too.

After reading the lively review from Shep G. about the rolls "as big as my forearm", we decided to give it a try when we visited the Safari in Roseburg. Man, the rolls ARE INDEED "as big as my forearm" and very delicious becoz the chef made them with very fresh ingredients. The price of the rolls are also very reasonable, from $8-$18. Too bad the restaurant is located far away from any major metros, otherwise I would like to visit them as often as I can :-)

Here on business, I was a guest at Ami last night and, as such, trusted the locals to order. We had no sushi but the dish ordered from the Korean Barbecue menu and the two Japanese dishes that followed our appetizers and endless Saki were quite tasty. I believe it was the owner who (in addition to our "local" guy) took care of us and he was very attentive.

Recently moved back to Roseburg after living in Portland. Ami sushi was the best sushi I have had in a long time! The service was great, the food was fresh and was able to fill up for under $20.00! I would highly recommend this restaurant to anyone!

    (4)
  • Kate C.

"Roseburg" and "sushi" go together like pineapple and tunafish-- it's not something you expect, but it's pretty darn good! I've had both their sushi and their cooked dinner items-- I think my favorite is the Roseburg Roll (plain-jane Cali roll dressed up with grilled eel and roe). The service can run hot and cold, too.

  • YeeLéa C.

The only vegetable in Korean shrimp fired rice is green onion, and the taste is salty since the salt was not melt down. Add tempura sauce for one dollar. Taste not like Korean or Japanese, more like Chinese or Vietnam. Won't come back ever

  • Meagan C.

One of the best sushi places there is. Great service, very friendly staff and, most importantly, to-die-for food. Fresh, flavorful and delicious. Great assortment of dishes for either dine in or carry out. I absolutely recommend this place!

    (5)
  • Jason G.

The people are nice enough, but the food isn't great. Everything but the sashimi was average, but the sashimi was bad, really bad. It was also over priced. The people were really nice though.

Wow. After reading all the reviews, I had to try these enormous rolls for myself. We went on a Thursday evening around 6:30 or 7. The place was EMPTY. We were by ourselves in the restaurant for a good 15 minutes before another couple came by and sat down. Then, another 10 minutes later, a guy came in to pick up his take out order. That must be it...they probably do a killer take-out business. So, we had the Korean shrimp fried rice and the Moby Dick roll. The rice came out first. I have to say, flavor-wise, it was pretty good. Not clumpy or mushy like some fried rice dishes I have had previously. Despite the decent flavor, every few bites, my husband ran into a shrimp with its shell still on. I guess the shrimp were not all peeled. Bummer. The roll was...for lack of a better word...huge. Reviewers don't lie. Despite its size, it was very well made! The roll was tight and the ingredients were well dispersed! I was pleasantly surprised. The fish was fresh enough...I've had fresher. I suppose my only complaint would be, ironically, the size. I was hoping to try a few of their other rolls (the variety was pretty good on the menu) but because of the size, I didn't have any room to try other rolls. The roll we had was good, I have had better rolls, but none this size! I'd recommend going with a group of about 4 or more and order one roll less than the number of people. That way, people can try more than one type of roll!

I found this place when driving from Seattle to California, feeling I deserved some sushi to break up the trip. It was so good! I had a seaweed salad and some different sushi orders. It was fresh, well prepared and presented and really tasty! The staff was so nice, too! People were coming in the entire time I was there, some for 'to go' orders, most to stay and eat, and many were obviously locals who come often. (I went on a Friday. evening.) Everyone is warmly welcomed. It is easy to find Ami from I-5 and easy to park, even though it is downtown. I have already told a few friends who are commuting about this great sushi spot!

Absolutely surreal. While I'd read other Yelp reviews suggesting that the roles were ginormous, I didn't quite believe it until I checked it out. I went alone while in town for work, and the waitress had to convince me that I could not eat one roll on my own. So I ordered a set of two, and another roll that came with 4 pieces. The creamy scallop was a whole scallop the size of my fist, while the rolls were about 4-5 inches wide. The waitress promptly said "I told you so" and brought me a fork and knife. The food was tasty, but it was strange to eat sushi this way. It's a nice family-run business and I asked the son to ask his father (the sushi chef) if they roll this way in their native Korea. The father responded "No, people in Roseburg like everthing big!" Helpful hint: order the "small" sized roll if you want a more traditional, less Roseburg experience.

We got the "Moby Dick," and it was both outrageously good and deserving of the name. A whale of a sushi dish!!! Great server, and even the sushi chef wandered over to chat with us about our food. We loved it.

  • Crushinator X.

Friendly staff, huge rolls, fresh fish. Yeah, those rolls are $15, but one is enough for two people. Really! Enormous! Good stop on way along I-5 or coming back from Crater Lake.

They have great sushi here! Generous portions. I have tried their Korean BBQ. Next time in go in that's what Im going to have. This place is owned and operated by wonderful people.

I haven't been much of a fan of sushi...up until now, that is. We've known this restaurant was here for a long time but with some guests in town, we decided to give it a try for lunch, mostly because it also has more "normal" Korean fare. Rose and our guest decided to be safe and order some fried rice (which looked good, btw) but dare devil that I am, I went for the house special sushi roll. Compared to my limited exposure to sushi elsewhere, this thing was gigantic and stuffed with all sorts of interesting tastes and textures that came together to form an altogether pleasing dining experience. Personnel were polite, knowledgable and friendly. We'll definitely return for more Check out our blog "Rose's Cafe" at: rosescafe1.blogspot.com

Pretty good sushi for Roseburg, giant rolls and fairly priced. Service decent. No complaints. We have and will be back!

The dragon roll is the best. Portions are huge but when you're spending $15 on a sushi roll I would expect nothing but big food

For Roseburg it's ok. Wish they made smaller rolls tho. When we can't make it to a bigger city and need a sushi fix we might go but we really need to want sushi. Went in again and will be my last time. I called in a order of moby dick, California roll, 3 miso, and a bowl of noodles. The person on the phone stated 20 minutes. Good stuff so far. I get there between 15-20 minutes. I walk in to the normal reception and pay for my food. I ask how much longer they state 10 minutes. Ok that's not good but it's not bad either. So I come back in 10 and still not ready. I'm not happy I ask for my food. C'mon really what's going on here? The brothers look at me and the older laughs. That was the end. I do not appreciate being laughed at when I'm paying for what should be quality service. I ask for my money back and while he's searching for my check he answers the phone. I'm done with unprofessionalism in Roseburg. I'll drive the extra miles to other restaurants from now. I hope their father knows how they're treating his customers. I came here eating his food while the older brother was learning to roll.

These rolls are insanely huge. That being said, it was decent. But didn't blow me away. We also could not finish a roll each for the life of us! All in all, better than I expected in this small town.

Old salmon roe, very slow service, unimpressive sushi. Green tea is standard at a sushi restaurant but unavailable here. Houji-cha in coffee cups from coffee urns? Lacks that extra touch.

Stopped by during a road trip. Was one of the few places open on Sunday night. Everything was delicious and the portions were large. Ordered a chef special roll, udon and a couple of orders of tempura. Tempura came with soup or salad. The roll was very huge and I had a very tough time tackling it with chopsticks. Otherwise everything was top notch.

Weirdest Sushi Ever. A SLAB of raw fish on some funky rice. Serious dude, it was like a half inch thick and 3 to 4 inches long ....... it was fresh but just a huge raw chunk. Nice Korean folks but a weird concept for sushi ... Tempura was good but way over priced - $ 10 for 6 diff vegies. I guess if you are cowboy from Roseburg and never had sushi before.... hey back that truck up fella no real cowboy would eat raw fish .. haha. I will not go back, no siree, no way, no how.

Me and my friends all love Ami! The service is good with very friendly staff. The roll are giant, fresh, beautiful, and pretty reasonably priced. There is lots to pick from, and even some vegan/vegetarian options, which is awesome. I definitely recommend going to Ami if you like sushi or good vibes. Super easy to spend a few hours in with some good friends!

  • Lydia H.

Came in for lunch with a friend and had a good meal. Service was friendly and the sushi was excellent. So why the 3 stars, yes the sushi is massively huge (even larger than Saburo's in Portland), but the size causes many limitations. For one, sushi isn't meat to be taken apart. I want to taste all of the ingredients of a roll in one bite. Plus we weren't able to order a variety of rolls without the possibility of having enough leftovers for a month and a huge dent in the bank. The overall decor and bathroom is a bit rundown (there were eight obviously used and old renuzit air fresheners sitting in the bathroom on a shelf). Ami is a fun novelty, but not a place I would regularly frequent.

  • Diana B.

Insanely good! I had the churashidon with six pieces of six different fish-so much sashimi I was only able to sample the rice and seaweed salad. Delicious!!! The lunch counter is not fancy, but they have decorated this restaurant with some beautiful Japanese art and tchokis. Since the locals are generally lumber men and farm folk, I can see that it would be difficult to have a full on setting, with the wait staff in kimono.

Missed this place so much that I made a point of getting dinner for the road when I was coming down I-5 a few weeks ago. The rolls are only a little pricier than an average sushi place but are fully two meals, and the fish is fresh and delicious. The Moby Dick roll is the best deal/most fish for your money in my experience.

To start this review, I'd like to say that I love sushi and have eaten at sushi resturants all over the United States. I won't stretch my experience and say I'm an expert by any means, but have enough knowledge to say that Ami's rendetion of sushi is the worst I've ever eaten. Regardless of flavor, sushi rolls aren't supposed to be the size of tennis ball cans. Sushi eating is never about quantity, it's quality that matters. I wanted to give this place a chance and went back a second time and thought the same exact thing. Simply too wierd to eat and I won't go back. If it's sushi you're after and are stuck in Roseburg, go try Sushi & Roll in Green. Excellent sushi at a relatively reasonable price.

Unreal! Holy friggen cow! Oh my good God! The size of this sushi cannot be explained by words. The nigiri pieces took about three bites to eat (and I've got a big mouth), the roll we got it, well, just wow. It's beyond anything I've seen. That said, this also tastes good. Really good. And yes, they use real crab in their rolls. I would like to try their food in more realistic portions. The huge ones sure are fun though. The service is very nice, but I never did get my damn tea! Oh, the tempura was pretty darned good too! Worth a try if only for comedy's sake!

I drove by this place a couple of times on my way to another destination. My curiosity got the best of me, because I am a sushi lover, so I stopped in and am very glad I did. I found friendly people both employees and customers. They have a special way they make there sushi rolls which are the size of a burrito! You can also have them made the traditional size if you prefer. I tried an assortment of items off the menu and enjoyed them all very much. I will definitely return often to get my sushi "fix".

  • Paul S.

I used to complain about Ami's absolutely ENORMOUS portions. It made me upset. You should be able to enjoy sushi the way it's intended-- all those elements together IN ONE BITE. Well, several months ago I pushed past my prejudice and began ordering regularly from Ami and I love several of their rolls and I'm ok with them falling apart as I try and eat them. I've always said that the flavor of their food is great. It's just the size that I can't stand. Well, a few days ago I learned that you can request traditional sized rolls. Oh man. I'm very happy and I can't wait for my next visit. But wait. Is it the same price? Now there's a dilemma: do I want traditional sized rolls for the same price as a giant one? I'll let you know. For now, the service is great, the food is great, the portions are Douglas County style. Meh. Win.

Excellent price for an enormous portion. Service has been great every time that we have gone.

  • Roy S.

Tasty, this massive one-item meal. And sure, one item was all I'd want. But I fear that too much of my satiety came from the large amount of mayonnaise the thing is stuffed with, not just the size of it. I felt kind of drugged for several hours afterwards, but not entirely unpleasantly so. I'd eat this again some time when I am in Roseburg, but not for a while....

"There's large, there's super-sized, and then there's Roseburg-sized!" Stopped here on the way home after seeing it on a side street in 'downtown' Roseburg. We had been craving sushi for a couple of days but hadn't found any, so this was a welcome sight. Sushi in Roseburg, though??? Immediate thought-- salmonella potential: high. We were pleasantly surprised by the sushi here, although it's not what you'd call typical or traditional... First off, (and second, and third, and fourth, because this really defined the evening at Ami) everything is ROSEBURG SIZED, which means fit for logger/trucker/sumo wrestler consumption. Seriously, the biggest rolls I've ever seen. The forearm example above is not an exaggeration in the slightest. I have big forearms... As it was explained to us by the waiter, they're trying to cater to the local audience who might not have the appreciation for regular bite-sized sushi. The nigiri was similarly giganticallyproportioned, with what appeared to be a full fillet of fish on top of a tennis-ball sized portion of rice. It worked great for all the nigiri we had (selection of ten), but not so well for the two rolls. With the nigiri, you could cut 'em up into more manageable portions and eat as you would normal nigiri. Good quality on all the fish, and a killer unagi. The two rolls we had didn't translate so well to jumbo size. You pretty much had to disassemble the rolls to the point where you were eating individual components of the filling and wrappings. The whole idea (at least in my mind) is to have them in bite-sized portions where the ingredients complement one another... All in all, an enjoyable if a bit strange experience. Decent value, too, compared to the options in Eugene - out the door for $50 for two, and with a hefty box of leftovers. Don't be fooled by the seemingly high individual item prices on the menu - we had FAR too much with two rolls and a nigiri combo.

We used to live in Roseburg and frequently we would order or drop in for sushi while we lived there. We moved to Medford 2 years ago and we were worried that we would not find another sushi place that would measure up to this one. After being gone for two years, we were on on our way back to Medford from Portland and decided to drop in for dinner for old time's sake. The owners still remembered us by name and they were really excited to see us! It felt great to be remembered. We had forgotten how BIG their rolls were!! I had grown accustomed to eating at our sushi place in Medford and so eating here again was like eating a shushi loaf...we had to take a to go box. I have decided that I personally do not like my sushi rolls so big, it makes it too hard to eat, and I like to savor all of the different flavors in the roll. They do however have the best Miso soup and the the best Korean BBQ beef. It was good to see Kwan...and we would always come back...maybe just order our rolls smaller.

Yes, long reviews are informative, but I'll limit my feelings to the following haiku: Ami in Roseburg Sushi is so very large Takeout box needed
