Ugh, is their 'per plate' upcharge for using a debit card even legal? Mediocre sushi, even for a conveyer belt place, in every sense. Skimpy on portions, variety, quality. Not fresh. Place felt depressed and desperate. Not much else to say.

I'm not really sure how to feel about this place. It does have $1 sushi plates, but they are extra small and about half a real serving. Anything worthwhile ends up being on a special order $3 plate. The sushi was crafted ok; the Owners and workers were standing behind me while I ate, and they whispered and shouted in Korean many times to other workers standing on the other side of the restaurant. This place is ok if you like to eat imitation crab, color-added fish or have a really small appetite for sushi. I did see some of my friends stop by to eat here as we were leaving, so hanging with them brightened the meal up a little.

I'm not a fan of conveyor belt anything but I eat here all the time. Mr. & Mrs. Lee and the staff are always welcoming and for the price its the best in town. Tons of regulars eat here. When I have been there there is always a good selection so I dont nderstand the comments about there not being one...also if you ask they will make it.

All right at best. Like most of the other reviews on here state, the service is poor, and the sushi is bland. Problem is there are plenty of other sushi places out there with affordable sushi, but with a much better environment and service.

RUDE RUDE RUDE food was excellent, but will never return because the service was so bad. we were not even offered water!

It fixed my sushi craving at 2:30 in the afternoon. It's a McDonald's of sushi. I'm glad it's available, but if Miyamoto was open, I would have gone there.

Worst service ever! The only reason I go here is because its close to my work. The food is mediocre but the price is good. You certainly get what you paid for here. If you want cheap, crappy food and being ignored then this is the place for you.

Best sushi I have ever tried ! Can't wait to go back!

Great value and great service. I love Umenoki because I can go in and get stuffed for $12 incl the tip. I have been going here for over a year, and usually go once a month or so. I don't understand the bad reviews. The service is fine and Mr Lee is great! I hate to say it, but every Asian restaurant I go to out here has hit or miss service. The signs, I guess, are a little annoying. In truth, I never noticed half of the ones that people mention. The salmon belly is great and the super white tuna is awesome. Try Mr Lee's Dragon Roll. It is the most beautiful roll I've ever seen!

I go to this place quite often with my husband. People there are nice and always welcome us. I love their desert fried Banana + Cream cheese . you need to try! Also I always order Amaebi, and Uni! Udon tastes right (I've had hard time to find it) The owner can speak Japanese a little bit which is sweet for me :-) Affordable place.

It is what it is -- inexpensive yet DELICIOUS sushi! The sushi chef/owner is always happy to please and their salmon nigiri is my fave...

Ok, so I come to Umenoki at least once per visit to Portland. It is right next to my cousin's hospital and is the perfect place to wait for her. $1 sushi...yes...I went in with not the highest of expectations, but was pleasantly surprised! They have a huge conveyor of Sushi, most of which is $1. They are the basics but still satisfying and CHEAP!!!! They also have some $3 plates which have more expensive ingredients are are bigger. I went against my strict $1 policy and tried a roll that had roe on top. I will say, it was pretty good. Service is friendly and the place, while it looks dated, has a relatively clean feel. Also, every time that I have been to Umenoki, they have been relatively busy and the plates were replenished quickly. Overall, I really like this cheap, decent place. Make sure to go in with the right expectations though.

My husband and I love this place, and have converted a number of our friends. The restaurant has an old fashioned Mom-and-Pop feel about it; it is unpretentious and simple, and those who like all the fancy trappings in their surroundings might be happier elsewhere. But the food is very good, reasonably priced, and the portions are just right. They offer a large number of yummy selections and are happy to make something up special for you if you like. In addition to all the goodies on the carousel, they offer wonderful specialty rolls which are both delicious and quite beautiful. Seating service is fast and once you are seated, they are quick to bring you the beverage of your choice. Mr Lee is delightful and the staff are friendly. It's also a lot of fun to watch the chefs make the various rolls, especially the specialty ones which are amazing works of art. This is a neighborhood restaurant--it's friendly and casual, just a good place to walk in and enjoy good sushi at a reasonable price.

Just wanted to update my last review to say that it looks like they took away the cash preferred pricing they had before. Also the owner seems to interact well with kids I have noticed in recent visits, even with the slight language barrier. Still a wonderful place for very cheap (while not being bad) simple sushi.

Our family has been going to the Lee family's "Umenoki Kaiten" Sushi for years. We were just there for dinner, and realized that I hadn't written a review of this wonderful no-frill establishment. We are never disappointed as Mr. Lee and family provide a nice atmosphere with great portions of Sushi for and even greater price. If you're taste buds are ready to be delighted with food off the conveyor-belt-system, or special order off the menu you'll be please with the size of the cut and flavor of the sushi they present. I fully recommend "Umenoki Kaiten" Sushi for a awesome venture into the sushi realm. PS Check out their weekly specials. Yes, it gets even better.

What to make of the contrasting reviews? I'd point out that Mister Lee and his restaurant has enough regulars, including us, that each time we are in, you notice when those regulars are there by the greetings. We've eaten sushi at a lot of places over the last decade plus. So we have a decent palate concerning the cuisine. All things considered, my 5 stars is a legitimate assessment of this belt style, reasonably priced sushi. Can you spend a lot more money elsewhere and have a different, upscale restaurant environment, you bet. Have we, on occasion, had less than enthusiastic belt-side service, once or twice, yes. Overall and all considered we will remain regulars at Mr Lee's belt sushi and made to order restaurant.

This is the kind of place that's great in a pinch when you're craving sushi but have no money. Saturday special is so cheap you forget that the sushi is pretty low grade. The salmon seems a little too frozen and isn't fatty at all, the hamachi isn't rich, a lot of the the rolls use fried fish sticks inside for some reason. There are much better places to go.

    (3)
  • Andrea S.

We come here all the time for a quick, cheap, healthy meal and we CANNOT believe the prices! A deal and a steal, every time. Don't expect this to be your fancy upscale sushi place. Expect your reliable, lunchtime everyday kind of place. The people who work here are dedicated and hardworking, always the same people here, which helps me trust the food.

Umenoki is great, friendly service and fantastic fresh fish selection. Recently raised their prices to keep up with similar sushi-go-rounds, however this place is better.

I've had my share of cheap sushi, and this place really takes the cake. Just about everything I had tasted disgusting. Not even just okay. I know you get what you pay for, but this is the worst sushi I've ever had. Here's the lowdown: I decided to get some quick sushi takeout after the gym...it took about 30 minutes to make everything once I'd decided what I wanted. I got an order of baked mussel ($1.25 - decent, but cold), seared salmon ($2.25 - okay), California roll ($1.25 - meh), Philly roll ($1.25 - okay), and some other type of California roll. Here's where things get gross--I decided to order their Tiger roll and their Vegas roll. The eel tasted chewy and had a weird flavor to it, and the soft shell crab made my stomach hurt. The salmon was a little overcooked and dry tasting, even WITH cream cheese. Let it be known that I have an iron stomach, and I just spent a good $8.50 and $7 for a solid tummy ache the rest of the night. I've had sushi from about 10-12 different places in the past two to three weeks (I'm on a sushi kick!) and this was by far the most disgusting place I've ever had sushi. Note to self, no matter how tired you are, drive a little further--it's worth it.

This is my family's go to spot for sushi. There are others around town but this one is pretty consistent. We usually spend $20-$30 and get our fill for a family of four. I recommend trying the spider roll as it is one of our favorite dishes. Our kids love the misagos and we love the service we get from the sushi chefs. On Saturdays, every plate is $1. Closed Sundays.

  • J G.

I love it here, and Mr. Lee is the best! When I first started going here, I thought the rice was a little bland, but it has gotten MUCH tastier recently. My personal favorite is the salmon, but the rolls are also very good, especially if you splurge for a fancy option! It isn't a gourmet, artisanal experience, so that's a poor metric for judging this place. this is good, every day sushi at great prices. You actually might want to eat there every day!

  • Merle E.

Mr Lee is still a stud.

  • Sean G.

Drab.... We weren't greeted when we entered other than the door swinging back shut into my elbow. We eventually sat ourselves in one of the few clean tables. The staff has the personality of a doorknob. The atmosphere is depressing. It's like a sushi cafeteria. The prices are definitely very good and the tuna I had was surprisingly fresh and tasted good even though I had to eat it with a fork because it was not afixed to the rice properly. Can't help but get the feeling this places best days are behind them.

    (2)
  • Patricia A.

As another reviewer said, the sushi here is pretty low grade. Not much variety, same exact plates passed me by the whole half hour I was there. Don't think I'll return, despite the pretty cheap pricing.

I love this place. After coming here only a couple times Mr. Lee has already memorized my favorite sushi plates. I was pleasantly surprised to see they have $1 per plate special in Saturdays.

I came here again out of desperation. This place is like sign hell. Signs everywhere. $7 MIN ON DEBIT CARDS $1.25 CASH PRICE PER PLATE, $1.50 CREDIT PRICE! $1.00 SURCHARGE FOR TO GO! Terrible. tacky, very few plates on the belt, and most of them are fried. I can't believe they now charge a different price depending on how you pay. They really don't want business, do they? It was dead when I came in around 7pm.

    (1)
  • Nanthawat J.

I felt tricked by their plate dotting system. There are many misleading advertisements... make sure you read all the signs before you eat.

    (2)
  • Denton E.

I really want to sit down and write a witty, sarcastic scathing review of this place - but the more I think about it, it's not worth it. Do yourself a favor do not be tempted by the $1.25 plates of sushi even in your most desperate moment of hunger and/or frugality. I went in hoping for a quick, light, and relatively healthy lunch and walked away only with a quickly acquired healthy stomach ache / heartburn. Definitely the blandest sushi I have ever tasted, and clearly I should've known better. Shame on me.

    (1)
  • Michele C.

Decent, and worth the money on Saturdays ($1/plate all day long). The only thing I have to complain about is the rice. It's a tad overcooked (mushy). The slab of rice that they have under the nigiri is smaller than normal (makes it hard to pick up the fish and rice with chopsticks), which I would be fine if the rice was good. My boyfriend complained about the soy sauce, as they only have low-sodium soy sauce, which he thought was bland. The slabs of fish on the nigiri were of good size. The baked mussels were good - it came luke warm and the mussels were pretty big! Unlike many sushi joints where their mussels looked like a tiny clam on an oyster shell. Decor was so-so. Lots of signs about the $1 Saturday special and minimum purchase stuff. Also have giant white boards to show their bigger menu for rolls of sushi. All in all, not bad! I will most likely come back again.

    (3)
  • Erica E.

I wasn't very impressed. Not very good quality sushi and a tad over priced with hidden fees for using your debit card. Bring cash to avoid the "processing fee"

    (2)
  • Becca S.

This is where we go when we want cheap sushi, where the only real requirement we have is that it's "better than supermarket sushi", so if you have higher standards, you'll probably be disappointed in some way. They have changed their pricing lately, there's a cash price and a card-price, which is a 25c difference, that's fine with me, it's business after all. Minimum order is $7 per person. So make sure to read the signs and understand the way things work so you aren't dealt any funky surprises. As always lower your expectations if you're going somewhere that has a belt. It's not going to be the freshest, nicest cuts.

    (4)
  • Calen W.

Umenoki has gone downhill from years ago. It once had good sushi at a good price, with a nice atmosphere. The sushi now is still cheap, but is low quality. The rice has no texture, the fish is bland, and the non-sushi items are cold when they should be warm, and warm when they should be cold and fresh. They get two stars from me, instead of one, only because they kept a cheap pricing model. I cannot recommend this restaurant, and think there are many better options within a 10-15 minute drive.

    (2)
  • Brent M.

Worst service ever! The young lady behind the counter was very RUDE (both times I went). When I asked for help, as I'm a sushi novice I was talked down to. They charge an extra $0.25 per plate if you use your credit/debit card as well as another $0.25 for the to-go box. I won't be returning ever and won't be recommending to my friends.

    (1)
  • Janie W.

Some people just shouldn't be in business if they don't know how to. The signs were misleading. It gives customers false advertisement when it saids dollar per plate when it wasn't. We ask for salmon belly and the owner replied with I don't charge you extra by mixing it with regular sushi. I find his answer to be rude. I asked for fresh mussels and he microwaved old ones. They did not value their customers. I was willing to pay extra for everything I asked for. I really hope no one gets sick from this place because the food is not fresh and at room temperature, fish gets bad. If you are going to open a sushi restaurant, learn to turn on the A.C and not leave the door open on a hot day and let flies in.

  • Gregg B.

Owner always greets us with a smile, remembers how we were from the last visit, and shows a genuine interest in our latest news. Food is great, with fair prices - it's all well worth the trip.

If you're broke and need sushi, this stuff will make a turd. Beyond that, not worth the time. Service was terrible, nearly had to make the nigiri myself and it wasn't even that busy. The decor is sterile and uninviting, staff pays no attention to you. Pay the extra and check out Fujiyama if you want decent revolving sushi.

  • Mr B.

This place by Mr Li is a performance art piece. It's nothing for atmosphere. I was nervous at first since it didn't look that inviting with its very basic seating and outside appearance. What drew me in was having a low cost sushi belt place near my home. But the food is full of love. I've gone in many times late after work and there was not much left on the conveyor belt and all you have to do is Ask. And Mr Li is a gem of a human being and he would make it for you on the spot. He will remember you and talk with you if you are a person that enjoys a conversation with the Sushi Master. Eat here, it's sushi at its best at a nice low price. There are so many regulars that eat here and have made some Facebook friends and I've always come away with a nice yummy feeling I my tummy. :-)

I have a thing for sushi carousels. Love being able to sit down to lunch and be able to eat right away. This place is decent and cheap. They now charge you for the tea...it wouldn't bother me except they are terrible about refilling it. The stuff that's more than a dollar immediately jumps up to 3.00 a plate. (But it's a decent portion and worth it.) My other pet peeve about this place (besides the tea thing) is that they have a million signs all over telling you about the $5.00 minimum and discouraging you from using plastic. Got it....I will eat 5.00 worth.

  • Sherry S.

The folks working here, for the most part, are sweet and helpful. The place in general though, ghetto. They need a facelift. I don't remember it being this bad in the past though I've only been here twice. It's a convenient/quick fast food sushi style joint for getting your fix and hoping nobody sees you dash in there. It just seems to be getting really tired and old. The sushi going round and round does not seem to have any oomph either. There's a lot of fake crab, and tuna fish salad type sushi. I think my days of hitting up fast food sushi are over. I might have even recognized one of the plates from last time that was on the roundabout. Yes it's cheap and you get what you pay for.

    (2)
  • Pui S.

Yep, $1 sushi!!! Friendliest crew. Mr. Lee (the owner) is super nice and will take good care of you. NOTE: Umenoki closes on Sunday. :(

Not enough on the track. Food that should be warm was cold. Atmosphere was toooo quiet. Udon was good. There's a lot of track sushi in PDX this wouldn't be my first choice.

two words... "conveyor belt" = very basic in a pinch way to satisfy a sushi craving. There are signs all over the place saying what you can and cant do. A little elementary if you ask me. THey should care more on making the customer happy rather than writing the do's and dont's all over the place. Quality= mediocre at best. who knows how long those plates have been circling that belt. The Sushi was edible and it is the 2nd time i have been there as it is one of the only sushi places close to where I work Staff= The lady insisted that I sit next to one of the only other people in the restaurant. I asked to sit at a table with a bit of privacy, so she chose the only other table on the other side right next to a table of 4. When i asked again to set at a table which was seperated by at least one table from the closest guest she kept pointing to the one where I did not want to sit. Why??? no clue. Finally i pulled out the chair of the table i wanted and sat down. I dont think she wanted to fight me on it. I asked for water and not once was offered any other drinks or a refill. Will i go back? Maybe, if the craving of raw fish is bad enough. Its hard to drop that much money on crap sushi for lunch especially when you can still leave hungry.

Disgusting! The fish is terrible, the chef was rude, and the service is almost nonexistent. I don't know how this place stays open.

  • Magicka M.

Yea, this was not the best sushi experience for me. I saw the sign for $1 sushi and was excited, but it seems like all the ones that are one dollar are the lame ones like cali roll or veggies (sushi that are cheap in anyplace). Then they have the nicer looking sushi (the ones I normally get), but they are $3. Sure you get more sushi on those plates, but it kinda defeats the purpose of cheap sushi. Now we are just getting into normal priced sushi. I started off trying a few that looked decent, but turned out that there was nothing special about it. Then later I saw the sign for a $5 minimum. I can totally see why they put that since I was ready to leave after the few that I tried (shared with my husband). It would have been nice for them to put out a list of sushi so that I can order something I like knowing that its within my price range. Maybe they had it, but I didn't see it and I tried to look for it since the sushi on the conveyer was obviously not enticing me. I did however see a list on the wall for specialty rolls that you can order as if you are not at a sushi go round, but the ambiance of that still remains and the price isn't any cheaper. Overall my experience wasn't great, but had I come in knowing that there is that extra sushi menu, willing to pay normal price, and aware of that $5 minimum then I'd probably have a better time, but I didn't. I was lured in by the big advertisement on the window and didn't leave satisfied.

When you go into Umenoki Sushi you are trapped. There are several signs posted that say if you eat less than $5 of sushi they will charge you a $10 service fee!!! Then when you sit down you are greeted by more happy signs...these signs which are taped to the counter at regular intervals tell you ask whats in the sushi first because if you don't like it you are still paying for it. Also, you are warned you must prod your "warm" food to make sure its warm before you eat it...as they won't warm it if you have taken a bite. Despite these ominous warnings my husband and I still sat down as there was a lot of people there. We each took a California Roll plate and prepared to enjoy. However, we were thwarted in our enjoyment by the fact the rolls were horrible. It tasted like the fillings were 50% mayonnaise and the rice was very overcooked and bland. We then assessed our situation. We had taken three California rolls plates before tasting and still had to spend $2 more dollars before we could leave with out the $10 penalty. We still had to get two more plates of food. As we watched the train of sushi go by we were offered tons of odd fried food, meat sticks and tempura shrimp that had no sneeze covers on them. These foods were passing within 18 inches of people chatting and coughing towards the food. Deciding to pass on the breathed on food we turned our attentions to covered plates. Spring rolls and gyoza seemed safe so we tried those. The tasted pretty much like you'd expect if 7-11 has gyoza and spring rolls. Also the place was filthy. I saw one of the sushi cooks drop a package of squid and catch against the counter with his crotch. He then opened up the pack of squid and started lying it on the sushi rice. WITH HIS CROTCH! Don't here its horrible. Try Ichidai or Kappaya they are more expensive but the food is better and is made fresh for your table alone.

Maybe it was when we came, or perhaps the fact that there were issues with contaminated water, but this place gave me the heebie jeebies. The plates were cheap, but the portions were also small. Each drink you drank you had to purchase. Yeah nothing is free here. The quality of the sushi felt one step above prepackaged sushi. I have had better conveyor/boat sushi before for the same price. Just a complete disappointment.

  • Kate H.

Reasonably fresh sushi for an unbeatable price. I've driven by this place lots of times and noticed their "$1 sushi" signs, but figured for $1/plate I'm not going to get anything particularly exciting. Today I finally stopped in with a few friends. I was pleasantly surprised. Unlike other local sushi places in a similar price range, this place actually had at least a few things on their conveyor belt that looked downright inviting. I ate a fair bit of their tuna and salmon nigiri and was happy to note that every piece I had was reasonably fresh. It was way nicer than what I've come to expect in this price range, and I'll almost certainly visit them again. They have a $5/person minimum charge, which was about how many plates I needed to start feeling full. They take VISA and Mastercard.

    (4)
  • Tommy T.

Meh. is right. I have had much better sushi for the same price at other conveyor belt type joints. While looking for something to eat in this area I stumbled into Umenoki Kaiten Sushi hoping to find some semi decent sushi. I must admit that being vegan really limits my selection, however I usually go for avocado rolls or cucumber rolls at most sushi places. The rice tasted a little off and I was dismayed that the avocado rolls were 2$ for each plate.

    (2)
  • R W.

About as good as it gets for cheap carousel sushi. Last time I was there, the nigiri was pretty amazing. There are a bunch of $1 plates, and thus, they have a $5 minimum. I have been to this place about twenty times over the years and it's always been just fine. I certainly never felt as though it was dirty. Pretty busy at lunch, which is a plus when you are eating unrefrigerated raw food. The staff is a little uneven, but it's not a dining experience, it's carousel sushi in a strip mall.

  • Jacob V.

Granted I haven't eaten at many sushi places but for the price and quality this place is outstanding! It's not much to look at as far as atmosphere but once you get some white tuna sashimi and a few items off the belt you won't notice anything else but the food. You can't beat the prices it's really good and fun to pick your dishes off a conveyor belt. They will also make you something special just ask they owner or his son. The only thing that was just ok was the regular tuna. Oh BTW try the coconut shrimp and a dish of teriyaki, hell have it all indulge! Then you'll wonder how you at twenty bucks worth of sushi but its all soo very worth it! Beware they will feed you as much as you can eat and the conveyor belt doesn't stop nor does the sushi chef stop making all that wonderful sushi! I'm goin back soon still lots to try hopefully I can try torro there.

I drove from Vancouver WA. to the AT&T store in Portland to buy a new cellphone, on August 18th 2010. As I entered the mini mall area that is home to the AT&T store, I noticed the Umenoki Kaiten Japanese sushi restaurant. And decided that we (my 8 year old son and I) would stop in for dinner. When I finished at the AT&T store, my son really had to use the restroom badly! Since there are no public restrooms at the AT&T store, we ran to Umenoki Kaiten so he could go. We entered the restaurant, and he made a bee line for the bathroom. I sat in the front of the restaurant, and waited for him to finish before we were seated. The sushi chef gave me a very unfriendly look, then said in a voice loud enough for the front half of the restaurant to hear, " this second time you come here for bathroom and no buy! you should be ashamed of yourself!" As I sat there taking in the stares of the restaurant patrons, I considered leaving once my son was done in the bathroom. This guy has never seen me in his life! The chef, and two waiters are of Asian decent. And there are several Hispanic people working here too. Just in case you were wondering. When my son came out of the bathroom, we were seated. The waiter took our drink order, then we never saw him again. 10 minutes into our meal, I went to find another restaurant worker, and asked if we could have our drinks. The sushi portions are typical for $1 dollar cuisine. This restaurant has $1 dollar and $3 dollar plates. And most sushi plates are drowning in that mayonaise, chili sauce crap mixture that lower class sushi restaurants use. As Cherise F wrote in reference to this restaurant, there are hand written signs everywhere warning you that if you make one slip, you must pay extra! Its really tacky. Based solely on the food, I wouldn't recommend this restaurant to anyone! Regardless of the head chef's attitude towards you.

  • Amanda S.

Horrifyingly bad. I should have run when I saw the sign that warned you that they would heat your hot food if it was cold. I'm fairly sure this place is a health code nightmare. Food was not kept at the proper temperature (hot or cold food) and the floors were incredibly dirty. Like the sort of dirty that you wonder if mud wrestling was hosted there in after hours. I'm rating this one stars against other conveyor belt sushi places, FYI. It was that bad.

  • Brian F.

I would have to say i am a regular at Umenoki Kaiten Sushi and for good reason. The family that owns the restaurant seems to welcome me as i am a member of the family. The sushi is inexpensive but not not be confused with cheap. The salmon, tuna, and eel are definitely fresh from the ocean. The sushi train menu items are good but their specialty items are to die for. My favorite is their fat tire roll...

    (5)
  • Tasha M.

This place was not good. There are signs up everywhere with all these stipulations on eating there....weird. Limited sushi roll selection, I only saw California rolls and Philadelphia rolls.. The thing that really did it for me though was the dirty water glass they gave me, which looked like it had sand particles floating in the bottom of it. If you like $1 sushi try Sushi Sushi on 82nd and Foster.

  • Edwin L.

Has to be the WORST conveyor sushi I have had, and I have been to many. Rice was super hard and cold. Rolls had no character or taste to them. Place looks tired and dirty and the woman at the front counter was a total B. Would rather eat McDonalds or even public school lunch
