Women. What can you do? Varied as the day is long -- true enough -- but most tend to bristle at one of two situations: * Being called a "girl" * Being called "ma'am" The kindly folks at Thai BBQ have solved this sticky wicket. When a lady comes in to eat, alone or with friends, or calls 10 minutes ahead and picks up her Pad Si Ew with Chicken and a Thai Iced Tea to go, she is addressed, with utter kindness, as "madam." I don't know how the addition of one little "D" can make such a big Difference in one's interaction and perceptions, but I assure you -- along with Dependable dishes, Decent prices and Delightful service -- it Definitely Does.

Oh my god this is the best place ever. I have been going here for years and its always amazing. At this point they know me by voice or by my to go order, my wife called in and made the order and they knew it was us. I send everyone I know to this place, the tom yum soup is the most amazing thing I have put in my mouth! and I have put some crazy good stuff in my mouth.

Surprisingly pretty good (: the Thai iced tea wasn't my favorite but the pad Thai with chicken that my boyfriend and I both had was pretty tasty. He cleaned off his plate, but I had leftovers to take with, so I'm happy with the proportions. Would consider going back.

Great stuff. I got the deal and went to pig out myself and it was awesome. I got app sampler, pumpkin curry and sweet n sour chicken. Came with a side salad w delicious ginger dressing. Everything was good or great; real fresh. I guess had to complain I'd be pumpkin chunks not soft as I'd like them. But overall one of the best meals I've had lately. Service and restaurant interior were just fine, recommended.

Pretty good, I like to try new places and when I saw a yelp deal I had to give it a shot... Not the best place he town for service that's for sure, very fresh flavors though..

Everything we ordered (salad rolls, tofu panang curry, and grilled steak) was fresh and yummy. Everything was seasoned deliciously. The service was friendly and quick considering that there was only one server working. Also they are well prepared for kids with high chairs, a booster seat, crayons, colored pencils, and plastic dinosaurs for the littles to play with while they wait. The only thing that I think could be improved upon is I would've like some pictures in the menu. I really wanted to be more adventurous but I don't know what most of the Thai dishes are.

Wish i had spent my $ elsewhere. Just thoroughly dissapointed in the food quality. When great pho' is next door, why did i drop money here. i didn't care to finish my mussaman. I am not terribly picky about my thai food choices. I would not reccomend it. The lady was nice. that is all it has going for it.

This place is pretty damn good on some days, and mediocre on others. I don't recommend their Pad Thai, as countless other places in Portland do it better. However, their treatment of seafood and other noodles dishes are pretty darn good. The prices are justifiable for what you get, and if you can get the point across that when you "spicy" you mean "spicy, not white-bread person trying to act tough", the cooks know how to do it just right. I don't expect anybody to be massively impressed by this place, but as far as Thai Food goes, you could do worse. We still go every so often.

Okay, the proprietor of the business contacted me to apologize and explain the circumstances surrounding my bad experiences there. He asked me to return and give it a try again. I did, and I did so three more times for good measure. I still say that the portions on some items are too small, and that the flavor could be amped up a bit, but the customer service has been spot on all three times I have returned. No more chicken in my veggie dishes. No more ignoring the customer for twenty five minutes. They have vastly improved how they interact with the customers. Now they need to focus on bringing out those clean strong flavors and bump up the portion sizes on their high end items and I would add another star....

Food at Thai BBQ is good, service is good, they have become a close to home staple. The ambiance is pretty average and leaves much to be desired but it's a small place and their prices are fair for the food quality. Their glass noodle salad is very good (spicy too), their spring rolls could use more substance as they contain little more than a few bits of cabbage. The summer rolls are typical (salad like) and fresh albeit could stand a bit more basil. The fish sauce is standard and the peanut sauce is typical (somewhat too sweet but once again typical). I usually get the Pad Prik King or Pad Ka Prau which I think are very good dishes here. All of their sauces are good not inventive or special but typical and tasty and their quality is consistent and reliable. For the most part I would say the food here is above average for Portland and pretty much standard/typical for above average everywhere I have lived and worked. They don't over use the fish sauce, everything is simple, balanced and consistent. When we want a quick Thai bite and a full belly with consistent quality we go here. When we want more ambiance, comfortable surroundings and succulent lichi duck we go to My Thai Bistro on Hawthorne - They do Thai duck really well, their soups are above average and the ambiance is pleasant, service is good and presentation is excellent - portions are a little small and prices are a little high but the food is good and worth it in my opinion. I would not recommend or confuse the aforementioned with My Thai Restaurant on Belmont (different people) - Their portions are small and over-priced and the food quality is sub-standard for the price and portion size. At the My Thai Restaurant on Belmont the food is very plain + the ambiance is cold, barren and sterile trying to pass for modern and sleek which can be said for the service as well. As far as I can tell the My Thai on Belmont has a loyal neighborhood following that trumps up their friends ratings a bit to help them out because their food is not very good and the service was marginal to poor in my experience.

The service here is always very warm and nice. The atmosphere is bright and welcoming. The food is always fresh and they are very willing to make adjustments to your meals as you desire. Very nice people. Very nice dining experience.

My husband and I have been huge fans of Thai BBQ since our first meal there. Everything we've ever tried has been absolutely delicious! They are also very friendly and fast, and their prices are good. When anyone asks us what our favorite Thai Restaurant in Portland, OR is, we say Thai BBQ!

  • Leumas E.

Best Thai I've had in Portland. Very fresh ingredients and flavors and spices are perfect. And the same guy who takes your order will run back and cook your food. I don't want to say too much here as I'm afraid this place will get discovered and end up too crowded.

  • Daniel P.

I wanted this little place to be better. It was pretty simple in flavor and offering; not a bad thing, if they deliver on it. I wanted to try a few different "BBQ" items, but there were not a lot of grilled options which seemed odd. BBQ chicken had nice flavor, but could use some saltiness, not sweet-standard bottled side sauce. Green papaya salad did not taste fresh at all; had a hint of bitter tangy finish Beef salad was pretty good - nice heat and flavor. If you want some place to walk to for Thai, then this is great. If you drive by it daily like I, then move on to another place as there are better simple Thai places around.

UGH...this place makes me so angry! Went there for lunch the other day around 1:30 pm and had a fairly decent meal. When seated we were given two menus and didn't think too much about it. We were in a bit of a hurry, and hungry, so I didn't fuss when given our entrees first and the soup never came. So I'll cut to the chase. When we received our bill it was way too high for the "lunch specials" we had ordered. Went and grabbed a menu to check whats up with our server clearly watching me trying to figure what had happened. Yes, I did in fact order off the lunch menu and pointed to my selection when placing my order so where did this guy get off. Went to server to ask why we were served dinner when it was clearly lunch time and he played dumb...suddenly didn't understand English. Asked for his manager and that guy refused to make it right...rude and disrespectful. Would not even pretend to listen to me and it was clear instantly how this place operates. Thai BBQ is a scam and operates a shifty business...ewe this place got me bloody mad!

We ordered takeout from here last night, the Pad Thai and the Mussaman Curry. For about $20, the two of us had dinner last night (and went to bed almost uncomfortably full!), and had enough leftovers for dinner tonight. The dishes had just the right proportion of sauce/grain/meat/veggies. Everything was just as it should be. But the reason I give it five stars? The Mussaman Curry. It was incredible. We ordered it medium, with shrimp. And unlike most places, where the medium is not spicy at all, this was the PERFECT medium. And the flavor was incredible. Something kind of spicy, smoky and just a little bit sweet. Let it be a testament that my boyfriend rarely eats leftovers and was actually excited about reheating this. We'll be back very very soon!

My husband and I stopped in here for the fist time early last year. We like Thai food (especially curries) and my best friend lived in neighborhood and always raved about it. We both got curry dishes, and the Massaman was just OK but the Pumpkin Curry was so fresh and flavorful! It instantly became my favorite, and is wonderful every time that we go there. We have since tried many other dishes, and none have disappointed. The servers are attentive and friendly, and the dining room is bright and comfortable. It isn't flashy, pretentious or expensive, and those are the sort of places I really love.

I've lived around this place for a while and I can't believe that I've waited so long to go in. A lot of Thai places in town have disappointed me lately so I was happy to find this gem so close to FoPo. The decor was inviting and the staff was very friendly. Between me and my partner, we tried the salad rolls with tofu (great peanut sauce BTW), the pad woon sen, and the garlic pepper stir fry. The pad woon sen was delightfully light and the garlic pepper was very rich in garlic. Loved it all. Plus they have patio seating and they deliver!

I've been driving by this place for yeard. I had a little time before my next appointment and decided to drop in - I'm glad I did! A wonderful little space with very friendly staff. The "mild" pad phet I had was a little north of mild for my taste, but it was wonderfully cooked and tasted great once I got used to the heat.

Excellent food. Have been here once and ordered (to go) the tom kah gai, pineapple fried rice, and green curry- my staples. The soup is very nice, aromatic. The pineapple fried rice was super fresh and light. The green curry was as good as I have had- including in Thailand. I would say the chicken ordered within the green curry and soup was a bit tough and dry. The shrimp was great with the pineapple fried rice. The chicken holds this place back from a 5 star. I will definitely return, though.

I've been here a few times now and overall really enjoy it. The location is convenient and while the outside of the building is nothing to Yelp home about, it's really a very pleasant atmosphere inside. I give them five stars for their curries and three stars for their noodles. Overall it works out to be a respectable option for Thai food. I know there are lots of options for Thai in Southeast Portland, but Thai BBQ is worth a try. They are my go-to for curry, especially if I'm getting it to go.

Nom nom, drool, nom, drool. Nom. I come here twice a week. Favorite restaurant in town. Everybody that works there is sweet as pie. Very cute inside. Huge portions, delicious hot oils for topper, recommend the tom yum soup, pad kee mao noodles and curries (everything on the menu is amazing, these are just the ones my creature-of-habit ways make me cling to).

  • Brandon T.

I came here first because of a Yelp deal they had. In fact, I'm pretty sure I would have never known they existed if it weren't for that deal. They are on a busy enough street, however the place is quite small and easy to miss from the road. I actually knew where I was going and still drove just past it. Just like it looks from the outside, it is a little space. However, they don't try to overcrowd the space with tables and chairs, which is appreciated! The atmosphere was nice, but nothing really stood out from other Thai places. The staff was very helpful, friendly and honest. I dont live in the area, but I will be stopping by again when I am.

The gold standard -- I've tried almost all the Thai restaurants between Portland and Salem (not a big geographical scope, but still...) and Thai BBQ is THE BEST. I avoided it for so long because I thought (wrongly) that they only specialized in BBQ. I dunno, I'm dumb. The menu is what you'd expect: pad thai, curries, noodles, etc. The yellow curry, pad thai, salad rolls, crab puffs and spring rolls are my favorites. The sauces are sublime. The prices are right and the portions are large. They do everything right and Simon, the owner, is an incredibly friendly, warm and charming man. Love this place -- perfect!

  • B C.

Food no longer taste the same as it used to, not sure if they changed owners or have different cooks. Everything is kinda bland and taste like a cheap bouillon cube. The peanut sauce is totally different, the spicy noddlles were flavorless and completely void of all vegetables. It's a shame, this was one of my favorite thai take out spots.

    (2)
  • Darcy N.

Really enjoyed the decor, music and the nice, attentive staff. Food was good, but nothing outstanding. It was not as authentic Thai as I would have hoped, had a lot of Chinese/American dishes on the menu. Everything was in English, there were no chopsticks offered and the two "hot" dishes we ordered were pretty mild. My biggest beef were the prices: everything was $2-$3 more expensive than most other Thai restaurants in this area, while the portions were significantly smaller. Nothing wrong with this place, but there are much better Thai restaurants in Portland and in SE specifically.

The food was very good I am not sure what the BBQ part is but nice and friendly. Our swimming class went there and no one was disappointed, Fast and delicious. willing to accommodate any requests.

The best thai food in Portland. Authentic, tasty, reasonable price. I not have anything not good here.

  • Bryan I.

The lunch specials here are quite decent! ~$7 for a full dish of pad thai, masaman curry, or 10 or so other options. And yeah, when they know you've got less than 60minutes to get in, eat, and get out, they hustle! Overall, the few dishes I've tried are well-respected in both quality and quantity. And despite being in the middle of a mini-mall, they've done a nice job with the ambiance! Sadly, I can't comment on the dinner selection/quality (yet) :-(

  • Leina K.

I live down the street- so I frequent Thai BBQ often and always order the salad rolls and Pad Kee Mao. The salad rolls are flipping amazing- I've never had better. The noodles are full of flavor, and a good almost gluttonous serving size. I am actually posting this review because I cheated on Thai BBQ and am disgusted with myself. Here I am eating Thai Food at some new place by my work like a thai food slut, I didn't even read the menu. The food is bland, service is okay and prices not fair. I was craving noodles and I was desperate. I might as well dust my old pal Maru Chan off the shelf and enjoy a salty cup O noodles. I can't blame this establishment, but I just can't help but compare it to Thai BBQ where service is always five star, and well- there is no better Thai food in Portland. I'm sorry Thai BBQ, I'll never leave you again.

  • Roger G.

All the other good reviews nailed it. And I can't remember what we ordered anyway..just know that it was delicious & in large portions. So much so, that we took home lunch for the next day for both of us. Loved the decor- the tiki-hut style thatch & the framed photos of Thailand covering the walls. Very casual & fun. The place is a gem. And the young waitress "still in training" was great. We'll be back.

I walked in an afternoon around 4 pm. My wife and me were the only customers. The little house make you feel comfortable, and we ordered something has mint and beef . The taste is very enjoyable! Overall, worth to come back

This restaurant is close to my house but for sure is my go to. I love thai food, I mean LOVE thai food and the are very good, not the best but very good. I go here a lot. I love the pad see ew, and tried the pumpkin curry the other day it was very good.

Thai BBQ on SE Powell easily has the potential to become one of best Asian cuisine restaurants in Portland. However, their lack of regard for customer requests concerns me. Everything on the menu is amazingly fresh and well prepared except for one thing, oyster sauce. Oyster sauce is in EVERYTHING. I made it very clear that I had a shellfish allergy and that not only can I not have oyster sauce, I can't have the food cooked anywhere near it. The waitress went back to the cook and told him about the oyster sauce problem and he came out and personally said "no problem". Despite my request, within 2 bites I realized they had cooked it in the same wok as all their other oyster sauce filled items. This can potentially be very dangerous, all they had to do was tell me, "sorry, there is no way to avoid the oyster sauce sir". But instead, they decided to potentially poison one of their customers. The reason I still give 3 stars is because their ingredients really are the freshest I have ever tasted from an Asian cuisine restaurant and if you don't mind everything having a hint of oyster sauce than this is the spot for you. Side note: Thai BBQ is a different concept than say, southern BBQ for example. So if you're about to write an ignorant American type post about how they aren't slinging baby back ribs, save your breath.

Adore this place. Really friendly people and good food. atmosphere is super cozy--not at all what you'd expect driving past it on Powell.

I am a fan of this thai joint. I've gotten the Spicy Noodle every time and love it. Mmm..spicy basil and wide noodles. We ordered a whole chicken one night too. It was great. The Massamun curry is a large portion, if you get it to-go I would ask for extra rice. It's not the best out there but for a quick thai dinner, it satisfies.

When you see a place called Thai BBQ, what do you expect? Well, you might expect some sort of focus on, or extensive menu of, BBQ meats, or maybe BBQ veggies, or even a tabletop BBQ (I know, that's not Thai style, but it's Portland, so you never know). Well, maybe you wouldn't think these things, but I did... every day to and from work and school I would drive by this place wondering just what exactly Thai BBQ is, and what I'm going to encounter when I finally decide to stop in for a try. Today I made the stop. Intriguing? Startling? Awe inspiring? No. Regular Thai restaurant? Yes. While I want to be disappointed that a restaurant named Thai BBQ is not offering me a bounty of unique and exciting BBQ meats, I can't be disappointed by the tasty and inexpensive curry offering. I was so secretly hoping to find an oasis of Thai Lemongrass sausage, roasted chicken, honey pork, etc. No, alas. The menu is your standard Thai fare - stir fry, curry, noodles, etc. I tried the green curry and left an EMPTY plate. Good quality chicken, peppers, bamboo shoots, basil, and eggplant comprise the bulk of this delicious standard Thai gravy made from green curry paste and coconut milk. I was also slightly disappointed that they used Chinese eggplant instead of Thai eggplant (especially because they have a photo of Thai eggplant on the curry page of the menu that got my anticipation up), but oh well, I have come to accept that this is standard practice in Portland. Damn. Otherwise, this was some dang fine curry. The service was very friendly and smiley, and I understand from some other (non Yelp) reviews that the owner of this place is also the chef. That's awesome. I guess the quality curry and quality service makes up for the lack of ambiance and lack of namesake BBQ meat selections. Not sure how aching I am to go back, since there's a host of places I can get really bomb curry in town (see Sawasdee review), but if I were hungry for something other than pho and in the area, I would definitely hit this place up again to try out the stir fry. They do have one steak on the menu, and I can only assume that it's done on the BBQ, so some time when I don't have to stay awake in a night class, I'll try the steak.

I like this place. I've been there a few times. The place is small and decorative. The service was nice. I didn't give it a full 5 stars because the things were pretty average. Nothing really stands out to me. [-] Their Thai Iced Coffee is not very consistent. Every time I order their coffee, it's seems like it's darker/bitter than each time. I like their Thai Iced Tea. [?] Yes, I would go back there when I have the chance.

I'm usually very skeptic of Thai places because in the past i would go somewhere and the price was not worth the bland flavor of foods. I ordered the seafood mixed platter - I am not sure of the order name, but tasted like coconut milk was used. Amazing! The exotic blends of flavor and they used FRESH seafood. Shrimp. Clams. Muscles- they were still in the shell. Mixed with white rice and everything was perfect!! Overall my meal was under 10 dollars for lunch. They serve you a small salad before your meal which sets it all up. I highly recommend and look forward to any future visits :)

After at least 10 meals here, I think it's safe to say that I am full member of the Thai BBQ fan club. I've had a small array of items on the menu and would recommend their stirfrys, especially the Eggplant, Mixed Vegetable, Sizzling Seafood, ChooChoo fish, Chicken Satay. My standout favorite is the Ground Chicken and Shrimp with crispy basil. The title meal, Thai BBQ Chicken, is tasty and does not disappoint. While the place serves the veggie heads with tofu and non-fish-sauce options, carnivores should be happy about the good quality cuts of meat (no chicken gristle, yay) which keeps me coming back again and again. I've had great experience with the service, no complaints there. My only criticism is that I wish the parking lot were bigger! Take-out is always very fast, and it's a good alternative when the place is too busy. Prices are very reasonable, and they seem to try very hard to make you happy with your dining experience.

  • Barbara D.

Happy Happy Joy Joy is how I felt walking into this colorful little place. Yo those walls are bright! Yeah the Thai "BBQ" kind of throws you for a loop....what does that mean anyway? But, since I'm being a veggie head for now...I didn't care that they didn't have open fire pits and was pleasantly surprised with their wide selection of vegetarian dishes (as most Thai places), plus the food was GOOD and CHEAP. The server is also the chef and I really enjoyed the traditional atmosphere of the place. Pictures of Angkor Wat and SE Asian water markets in the bathroom. Random colorful Thai gods scattered around the small restaurant. (Although now that I think about it...if we entered an American restaurant with Jesus pictures all over it....hmmm that would be a little weird...well, whatever). Go give this lady some of your local business.

  • Tim S.

We tried this place even though some of the more recent reviews were sketchy. We really liked it. This place has all of our favorites, including the boiled peanuts we are fond of. The rice was perfect, chicken was tender and sauces were flavorful. The prices were reasonable as well.

  • Colin L.

In the style of all Thai restaurants ever, Thai BBQ has fairly bad decor but what they lack in interior design skillz they more than make up for with a surprisingly decent meal for an equally decent price.

with a name like "thai bbq," you expect something unique and interesting to try. very quickly though, you realize the entire menu is just like any other thai restaurant... curries, noodles, etc. the curry is made well, spiced at just the right amount, and service is GREAT -- and fast! i work across the street and whenever i call in an order for a lunch special, it's ready in about 10 minutes. i've never been here for dinner or sit-down, but the lunch specials are inexpensive and you got lots of food.

  • Jami H.

This place is right around the corner form my work, and I probably get take out lunch from them 2-3 times a month. I never expected much, and got, you know, Thai food. A friend stopped by my work this week and we went to lunch here. Through another person's eyes, I saw how mediocre the food really was. Everything was too sweet, suggesting that the BBQ stands for some kind of sauce they put in everything. The Pad Thai was purple and syrupy. But I ate it. And I will get take out again. But if you're looking for a superb Thai experience, go elsewhere.

  • Kevin T.

I lived a few blocks away from this place for six months, and we'd get food from here about once a week or so. Tasty, inexpensive, quick and friendly, with options for meat-eaters, fish-eaters, vegetarians and vegans. My favorites were the pad prik king and the chu chee curry. One of my housemates lived off the pad see ew. I've now moved across town, and there are _so many_ Thai places in Portland that I don't think I'll be trekking across town to make it to this one, but it was a great place to have for those nights that needed take-out.
