Mexican Cuisine
If you enjoy Taco Tuesday, then you have officially fallen in love with the Mexican Food. The main grain of Mexican cuisine is maize. Also known as corn, maize is grown for the past 9000 years after the crop was discovered by the people in Mayan civilization. Mexican empire flourished when they started growing beans, tomatoes, chili pepper, sweet potato and cactus. Till this date these ingredients are used in cooking authentic Mexican dishes and drinks.
Great use of spices, fresh chili pepper dishes like fajitas, tortilla chips, corn chips, salsa, chimichangas, burritos, nachos and quesadillas are invented in America. But when you are looking for authentic Mexican food then you must find a restaurant in the city that serves Rajas con Queso, Garbanzo in a Guajillo Chile Sauce, Pork Filled Chiles Rellenos, Chiles en Nogada, Molcajete Salsa, Pico de Gallo and Frijoles de la Olla. An eye-opening fact – Mexican don't like their food hot. They use fresh chili and other spices to create a flavor that lingers in your mouth.
Mexican food is great for those who are Gluten Intolerant as they use Corn instead of wheat in most of their dishes. Also, you can easily find many beans based Mexican dishes. Another dish which didn't get similar glory as tacos or nachos is the Mexican hot chocolate. If you love something hot on a chilly day, then go for Mexican Hot Chocolate. On merry days, you can enjoy the authentic Mexican Drinks like Tequila, Mezcal, Tecuí, Sotol, Bacanora, Charanda, Posh O Pox, Puebla and Pulque. Mexican Cuisine is for people who enjoy strong drinks and hearty meals.

I've had such amazing Mexican food in Portland that this place was just 'Meh'. Ambiance is great, cocktails were fine, but food was just about OK. I had enchiladas rojas and they were not great, not even memorable. It's OK overall, but skipping this one it won't be bad at all.

Excellent flavor in all of the menu items that the five of us ordered! The Shrimp was especially good, but I would and will make sure to order a side order of rice or something to complement the dish. All of the Tacos were great. Pricing was a little high but it won't slow us down from going back soon and often! Service was very good and all of the staff were "dialed in" and there to make our experience comfortable. Ambience was excellent and the restaurant was extremely clean and bright, which is not always the case for much of their competition. MUST TRY!

Came here for dinner on our 40th wedding anniversary at the recommendation of my cousin. Excellent food, very good waitstaff, nice location. definitely recommend this restaurant, we will be back.
(4)Jason M.
I ordered Carnitas, Suadero, Lengua,Pescado, Coctel de Pulpo, Tostada de Guacamole - and several margaritas. The food was outstanding and very relaxed, great service and recommendations.
(5)Lauren S.
This place is amazing! The quality of the ingredients far exceeds the amount you pay. We tried a lot and everything was delicious.
(5)Anthony R.
The service was very disappointing and the food not as good as I remember at the old location.
(3)Mara C.
I tried several things in that place. Let's see if I can remember the names of the dishes :) Plain margarita cocktail was really good. I tried the really spicy one which is called 9-O-Mite which probably would be something that the lovers of very spicy food would appreciate! Octopus cocktail was good. Chicken enchiladas were good and buffalo stuffed poblano was good too. The place was PACKED! It is apparently quite popular. The service was good too. Everyone was very pleasant and caring! Good job! I wish them all the best!
(4)Dan W.
Missed them when they closed the old location, it's good they're back. My family and I enjoyed their food and are happy to have another mid priced restaurant to go to. Excellent tacos, ceviche and we're looking forward to having more.
(5)Rob V.
Fresh and delicious food prepared and served by people that seem to love what they are doing. I was so happy to read that this wonderful restaurant was coming back and my expectations were exceeded!

Had a large group in prime time, and the service, food and overall experience was as good as it gets. We had empenada (with chorizo), ceviche tostada, guacamole, and the caesar salad for starters. The caesar really stood out with prominent anchovy and a nice heat level that was unexpected. Also the portions and value were great. I had the Bistec Del Nueve and when I asked for medium it was exactly medium. I was surprised that it was more than 10-12 oz of meat for $15. The chile sauce that accompanied the dish was to die for, I wish I'd saved a tortilla to mop it up. My friend from San Diego said the chile relleno was as good as he's ever had. The handmade tortillas are amazing - the restaurant appears to have a full-time tortilla specialist. Worth it! I also commend the restaurant for the elite service and for the speed at which amazing cocktails are delivered. We will be back, for sure.

I went for the first time a week ago and was back just a couple of days later! Originally, I was there for happy hour and only tried their tacos. All of them were delicious - especially the Suadero (Brisket) Taco. On my second visit, I dug a bit deeper into the menu and tried the Picadillo de Bufalo which I loved. You can't go wrong with the T9 Margaritas and so far I've tried the Tres Leches and the Chocolate Mousse desserts and would recommend both. The atmosphere is lively yet relaxed and the service is great. Give it a try if you haven't been and you'll be back before you know it!

My mouth is watering as I write this review. I ordered the cochinita pibil, lenqua, pescado, and carnitas tacos and yucca fritters. The cochinita pibil tacos were very tasty and melt in my mouth good. The lengua was the best lengua I've had in Portland. It was tender and flavorful. The pescado was fresh and the combination of cabbage and seasoned crema was a great taste combination. The carnitas tacos was very flavorful and different than most carnitas tacos. My daughter let me have one bite of my tacos and she ate the rest of the tacos. I had to order a second round of tacos for myself. She also had the beans and rice, but preferred the tacos. She is a foodie and knows great food. The best thing about these tacos were the fact that they were packed with filling. How one tortilla could hold all that flavor and meat is beyond me. Then again, the tacos didn't stay on my plate for very long. I also ordered the yucca fritters and they were sensational. I barely finished one fritter before starting in on another. Escabeche comes automatically and I had to get 2 more for the table. I think they put cloves in it or some sort of magic, for we couldn't get enough! I will definitely be back numerous times, to try everything on the menu.

Food was alright BUT nothing great at all. On the low end of street cart spectrum but no fears of uncleanliness. It's a nice place but pretty loud being small and lots of concrete. The owners must really covet their corn tortillas because you only get one per taco ($4.00 each) leaving lots of filling on the plate. Another strangely bad idea, chicken enchiladas where the chicken is separate from the enchilada throughout all perpetration so the flavors are very separate individuals who have never met and don't play well with each other. That's not what you want in enchiladas Now in the end, the manager came to the table and listened and appreciated the constructive criticism. He will take a look at things and make some good changes. I look forward to much better food and a better review in the future.

Went here on a whim, weekday night, not busy, which was great. Perhaps it was the hype I had heard about how awesome this place was in its last existence, but I was not impressed. I mean...the food was really good. But it was not the price point it should have been. The Ceviche was very tasty. The Lengua taco was excellent. The mushroom one not so much. But after eating there, I would prefer La Taq or especially Nuestra Cocina in a heartbeat.
(3)Michael H.
Thankfully this place has reopened. Wonderful service and excellent Mexican food.oh yeah, best margaritas in town. BEST. Lovely outdoor seating in sunny weather. I had the enchilada roja on a recent visit. Loved it. My wife enjoyed her Caesar salad. Unique flavored but not overwhelmingly exotic. Perfect mix of unique and traditional flavors. The owners were there and were welcoming. All of the servers were super efficient and very kind. Thank Tacqueria Nueve team for making us feel so welcome.
(5)Ron P.
Stepped in tonight because some friends had told is this place was GREAT in their previous incarnations. Well... I have to agree. We each had a margarita and split both a boar taco and a carnitas taco with some fresh guacamole. Just great. The staff were warm and friendly including the owner. The food and drink were very very good. The ambiance of the new place is great. We'll go back.
(5)Woodford W.
Our first time and it was a really a great evening. We were immediately welcomed upon walking in (not always something that happens in Portland) and were seated. The restaurant has a nice vibe with high ceilings, music that isn't too loud and a casual air. Our server was gracious, attentive and friendly. The two margaritas we tried were both delicious. We shared the bistec and the day's special -- a large pepper stuffed with chicken, olives, capers, and raisins. The bistec was tasty but the pepper was perfection -- smoky, great quality chicken and very generous. It was so good that I wondered if I could eat the pepper top stem. We started with the tostada de guacamole and the ceviche. Both were good, but we'd order the ceviche again for sure. We finished with their tres leches cake which was good. The prices were reasonable for the quality and portions. Combined with the great service and casual atmosphere, we'll be back!

A must stop in Portland - excellent food!

I really wanted to like this place and was looking forward to checking it out but it did not meet expectations. The host was friendly and we were seated right away in the cavernous space that really needs the beaker & flask booths to fill it in- the aluminum chairs just seemed out of place and made it feel like an indoor patio. Our server was also nice, if distracted. The menu definitely leaves a lot to be desired- too few options and wayyy over priced- there are so many good Mexican restaurants in Portland that charge half of what they are asking here. The food: Not great. At all. The steak was dry and tasted like it had been reheated in the microwave, the tostada- they call it something else- was pretty but lacking in flavor and super greasy. The fritters were uneventful and bland which I know is how yucca is but somehow pambiche manages to spice it up. Overall, a disappointment. Will not be going back.
(2)Aimee P.
I absolutely love this place!! My boyfriend and I went after my mom raved about the carnitas tacos and she was right - they are amazing. The meat in the tacos is so savory, the tacos are simple / street-style - very authentic. The service is great, the ceviche appetizer is soooo good and the drinks are perfect. I had the spicy mango drink (can't remember the name). This place is a definite staple for our occasional date night!
(5)Angela P.
Tastes like Mexican food created by rich, white people. High quality ingredients for sure, but no complexity of flavor or heat. Beautiful space though, and maybe the nicest waiter in all of Portland.
(3)frank g.
I had previously rated 5 stars but reducing to 4. The service has been really lackluster during my past several visits. Not offensively bad, but annoying and not worthy of of a higher-end place. Things like trying to sell us more drinks but not offering to get us more water or salsa, sitting us next to a very loud and annoying table when the restaurant was mostly empty, brining part of entree (small plates) when we'd barely started our salad, etc. I still stand by my 5 - star assessment of the food, but I don't find myself coming here much anymore as the service has been really consistent, and I mean that in a bad way.
(4)Carlos C.
We visited Taqueria Nueve at a friends recommendation and had a fantastic experience! Everything was great. The food was delicious. Their ceviche is the best I have ever had in town (and I love ceviche). We also had the special of the day and some of their taco dishes and they were all very flavorful and beautifully presented. Everybody was friendly and welcoming, which made for an overall exceptionally great experience. Very recommended!

Being the Californian that I am, I immediately thought of taqueria as the taqueria like back home. Perhaps I should've looked at the pictures and reviews prior to entering. Obviously we are from out of town and were looking to find something to eat while we were in the area. Little did we know that this was some fancy schmancy pants dining reserved for the early 30's to middle aged margarita sipping patrons. Not the taqueria I am accustomed to, so I felt a little deceived by the wording. And a little uncomfortable as many eyes were set on us, as we were a pretty young couple who definitely were not dressed appropriately for such a dining experience LOL. Aside from that, I do have to say the food was very well made. You can taste the freshness of the ingredients. The enchiladas with the squash was uh-mazing! I was told the street style chicken tacos were good, but from what I observed on my husband's plate was that the tacos didn't have the extra tortillas. Not a big deal, just a little out of the ordinary. Overall, we had good service and food. But fellow patrons, do come here knowing that it is NOT your typical mom and pop taqueria and is NOT priced like so ( if that is what you are looking for, like we did)
(3)Colleen B.
This place is awesome!! The food was great...fish tacos were amazing ....salad with mango yummy and so was the guacamole!!! Not sure why people had negatives comments on the decor it's pretty cool inside!one of the owners even took time to talk with us!! The service was great!
(5)Jim K.
The water is fine, the margarita sublime and the pulpo divine. We are glad you are back. When seated I was asked if I wanted my usual drink. Now this is 5 + years later! The decor is very well done! Bar stools of appropriate height should arrive shortly. I like the open kitchen. Fellow patrons were were ecstatic over the ceviche, lengua, mole, etc. not to mention the margaritas. The first night service was great. Billy and Brent have pulled it off. Plan ahead because the lines will be long.
(5)Bert B.
After being seated we waited ten minutes while servers buzzed around us. We decided to move to the bar where we would be arms length from our server. After the bartender did not greet us for another five the woman who would have been our server greeted us and took a drink and app order. Drinks and apps arrived promptly. We then waited fifteen minutes to place our dinner order while the bartender finished telling a story to the people next to us. We ordered the Ceviche which came quickly and the chicken mole which took forty minutes. I am fine if they are scratch cooking and it takes time, but forty minutes means he forgot to order it. The bartender noticed our curiosity around where the cooks had gone to catch the chicken and remarked, " we start our mole from scratch and it will be a while longer." No apology for forgetting to fire it. And when it came out it was simply lackluster. When we were done eating it took another ten minutes to get anyone's attention to close us out. Obviously not going back. Don't waste your time or money!

I'm giving this place 3 stars because the food was awesome, however the service was shit. We were a party of 5, we are in our late 20's, waited far too long for drinks while we waited for our table. Meanwhile, the next party of 5 that walked in after us were probably in their 50's, were treated much better than us, they had 2 rounds of drinks delivered before we got ours when we ordered first. They also forgot one of my friend's drinks when they finally did arrive. I was a little bummed because I had higher expectations. Our server didn't check on us much at the table either. One of my friends ordered the seafood Caesar salad and it was so good. I had 3 different kinds of tacos which were all delish, the other 3 guys had enchiladas and were good, but like other people have reviewed they complained about them being deconstructed. Kind of like everything layered and you had to cut out a bite of each thing yourself. All in all it was very good and I'll return only if it's just my husband and I or just a friend and I so we can sit at the bar where you know service is much faster and attentive.
(3)Brenda E.
Great atmosphere, staff and food! I loved the Carnitas Taco and Caesar Salad. I can't wait to go back again.
(5)Lynn W.
An authentic Mexican restaurant. Everything was delicious. The service was excellent. The place was hopping. Everyone seems very happy. Can't wait to go back!
(5)Michaela R.
The new space is nice. However, we waited 80 minutes for our orders to arrive (table of three), and it appears the kitchen is still working out the kinks. Octopus cocktail was rubbery. Parmesan shavings on my salad were leathery and tasteless. In a food town like Portland, that just doesn't cut it. Have hopes that these are issues that will disappear as they get settled in, but we will make another choice next time.
(3)Nisu S.
Good service, really good food! I had the Cesar con ceviche with was reaaly good and more than I could finish. Liane had a vegetal and pollo tacos. She enjoyed them. Great sauses. The chicken was a little dry but otherwise we had a nice dinner! Xander enjoyed his house made corn quesadilla. Liane's cocktails were well made with rich flavors while being balanced. Definitely recommend and we will be back!
(4)Michelle F.
Eh. The entire time I was here stuffing food down my taco hole, I was kicking myself for not going to Robo Taco down the road and paying half as much for food that's twice as good. And that was after waiting 15 minutes for the wait staff to notice me and just fill my water glass. It was fine--nice view, etc.--but I won't be back.
(3)Af R.
This place is great! Super great waitress and delicious food! We got a bunch of stuff. My husband got a special rabbit dish and loved it. I loved the butter lettuce salad with jicama, cucumbers, avocado, and mango, but it was a bit too wet and could have used less dressing. The chicken taco was pretty normal. My mushroom sope was delicious. wish they had homemade warm chips with a big bowl of chunky guac, but not really. We got a guac app that had a lot of shredded lettuce and a thin layer of not chunky guac. My spicy margarita was spicy and a good strength. We will be back!!
(4)Crystal R.
Amazing! So glad they are back. The ceviche is to die for. And the guac tacos. And the margaritas. Thank you for opening your doers again!
(5)Too Much S.
Very tasty food. Glad to have them back in business! *But* the bar is a wreck of free-pour inconsistency. Get it together and get it consistent, guys! Until then, I'm more likely to go there if I'm not planning on a margarita, and elsewhere if I am.
(3)Hannah C.
Went for happy hour and their house margarita was good as well as the guac. Not sure if I'd come back for happy hour since the prices weren't much different from their normal menu.
(3)Georgie K.
I was so excited that this place has been resurrected after 6 years of silence. Most of the food is as good as I remembered. The portions are small and their prices are big. That is something to work on. All the people working were amazing with the exception of the inattentive waitress. It did not ruin the meal or anything, but it was not very busy and she just absent. Every time we needed something like anything including our check we had to ask someone Else.Thank goodness the bus people were awesome. The waitress never checked on us well until we had already ask someone else. She was busy chatting with her co-workers. They can't get away with poor service. This is something that is must to work on. In reading other reviews there are many complaints about the service. When Your charging $11.00 for a mini enchilada and you may need to eat when you get home service best be good. The ceviche 2 stars. Needs some work. Dry, not yummy. Carne asada taco 2 stars. Steak was chewy and flavorless Piessacado enchiladas 5 stars. Perfectly cooked and flavors sublime! Beans and rice 5 stars. The best beans ever! The appetizer that I do not remember the name but had sautéed mushrooms was amazing! I love the decor. Very beautiful and calm. Kick ass chandelier. We will go back, but hope the server pays more attention next time and the food becomes more consistent.
(3)Patrick M.
So yummy! Suadero tacos are the best thing ever!
(5)Brent C.
Street tacos a la Portland chic, Taqueria Nueve in a nutshell. They specialize, evidently, in selling $2.00 tacos for $4.00, which can only be explained by the cut-copy-paste Portland decor and style of this place. Don't get me wrong, the food isn't bad. I dabbled in the taco menu, dialing up an asada, a carnitas, and a brisket taco with a side of rice and beans. The carnitas was the winner, good but not great. The asada was very disappointing. Just bland and uninteresting. So, normally three tacos and a side of rice and beans might set back you around $10. Everything at Taqueria Nueve is a la carte, so this somewhat standard taco plate ended up costing $16.50. Throw three bucks in for tip, and you're looking at a $20.00 meal. Alternatively the ceviche Caeser salad was quite good, but the size is somewhere in between starter and dinner salad, and at $10.25 might not be enough food to satisfy your hunger. So, tack on a taco for $4.00 and you're up to $14.25 again. There's just no value in this place, and while there's nothing particularly offensive about the food, there's absolutely no reason to go back here. Not when San Felipe and sells comparable food in my neighborhood for half the price. When I think street tacos, it's a fast casual sort, and they certainly should be affordable. If you're ever in St. Johns, check out Taqueria Santa Cruz, which slings the same style of tacos with more flavor for a third the price. Delicious and cheap and quite possibly the best kept secret in Portland Mexican food. For those really seeking out the decent Mexican places with full menus, head out to Hillsboro for Amelia's or Ochoa Brothers. For chumps with money to burn, Taqueria Nueve is the place to be, I guess.
(2)Vanessa G.
Everything I had on the menu was great . Food tastes fresh and not your run of the mill Mexican. Had the enchiladas verde. Loved how it had grilled chicken and layered tortilla. All in all a great dining experience, I would recommend it to anyone .
(5)Amy V.
Meh. The food was so-so and the service was the same. The margarita was the only thing that is worth talking about. I had the enchilada and I wasn't sure what it was... It was a chunk of asada on top of a pile of tortillas. It was not authentic or good. Sad because I had high expectations for this location, I loved Beaker and Flask when it was here.
(2)Carey D.
We had a delicious and creative dinner! We arrived promply at 5pm when they opened and were seated and served quickly. Staff was friendly and they even catered to our hungry 2 and 4 year olds. Made the kids something plain not on the menu- thank you!! Had the tongue tacos and OMG soooo good!! I thought for a sit down dinner for 2 adults and 2 kids with a margarita for less than $50 was great!! Food is affordable and delicious! Will definitely venture over to that side of town again!
(5)Armain A.
Amazing tacos and the Mole Chicken looked amazing. Very authentic flavors & good atmosphere, too. Will definitely be on my the top of my list when craving good Mexican food in PDX.
(4)Chelsea A.
Wonderful serves every time. Best house made margaritas! Love the garlicky Caesar salad and delicious tacos.
(5)Ken H.
Great fresh ingredients make really great Mexican food. Don't miss the guacamole tostata. Service was excellent as well as all the hot sauces and pico.
(5)ash w.
This place is fantastic! I can't say enough good things about Taqueria Nueve. I was there the other night for a company holiday party and I was so happy with my experience I wanted to give them a shout out. From the delicious dishes served, to the industrial atmosphere with a great view, to the attentive and friendly service, to the great drinks, these guys do it right. My favorite dishes were the fish tacos and the pork chops with mole sauce. I drank their sangria which was so so delightful. They have a great bar and a nice outside area. I will definitely be going back and telling everyone about them.
(5)Stephen O.
Awesome food...awesome service Brent is a great host! Shrimp with cilantro, lime , garlic... Awesome! Salmon yummy
(5)Steph W.
The brightly colored interior was much fancier than I expected. The staff were knowledgeable, courteous and attentive. The bison brisket salad was delicious and a nice combination of flavors. I tried a nibble of the cochinita and the suadero and both were very flavorful. Really liked the cochinita. Great guac and really is 'creamy' in consistency. Didn't have any drinks but I saw quite a few other tables enjoy theirs thoroughly.
(4)Bruce D.
I'll preface this with I went to the previous location before closing for many years. This isn't just a taco place. Or just a authentic Mexican street food place. This is a great restaurant. The staff is awesome. Friendly even when their busy. They care about the food and the experience. Atmosphere is great. With a little outside patio area perfect on hot sunny days with a T9 margarita. Inside is a nice open space with high ceilings and bright colors. Big bar and really bright open windows exposing a nice little portland view. Anywhere is a nice sit but I like sitting at the bar. The Food is a perfect blend of small tapas like plates to big dinner plates. Tacos are highlighted by the crispy wild boar taco and the suadero. Both juicy rich and simple/simply great. Both are on the happy hour menu. Happy hour is everyday till 6 and it's worth it. T9 marg is 6 bucks. Tacos are 3 and they have chips and guacamole only at happy hour. They have fresh fish that changes for all their fish plates: ceviche, taco, enchilada and a dinner plate. Apps are highlighted by ceviche tostada especially if tombo tuna. Uka fritters off the sides with some escabeche stuffed in them. I have to mention their sauces they bring out: green and red, are both full of flavor and add to the dishes. Salads are all worth it. Fresh light and flavorful with bright colors and flavor. Both of the enchiladas are special but I go for the hanger steak every time. It's consistently great. Although their Margs are small they are high quality and they have specialty tequilas like the spicy tequila that I add to my T9. Have fun. Highly recommend.
(5)Anthony B.
They are very conscientious about the quality and origen of everything they serve. The food is delicious, everything I've tried anyway, although I find it hard to get past the suadero tacos. Those things are the bomb. The margaritas are fantastic. I had a few here one day, then found myself at another bar later. Could barely put down what the second place called a margarita. Besides that though, the people here, staff and owners, are not only friendly and fun but they are just damn good people.
(5)Cola V.
Came here again for dinner and this time sat in the restaurant. Super busy again, so might be a good idea to call ahead for a reservation - only waited about 15 minutes for 2 people. No, I didn't come here on a date - read my last review on my kitchen crush ;). I didn't spot him btw. Anyway, enchiladas were excellent. Had chips + beans before our meal and also very tasty. It's in the neighborhood & plan to be back. It can definitely get LOUD, so maybe not an ideal first-3rd date spot depending on your tequila drinking mode, but a great place to catch up with friends, and let the kids be loud.
(4)Reyes F.
Hip decor, small buzz among the crowd and excellent food presentation. My group and I were impressed. Service was friendly and quick and food tasted great.
(4)Andrea S.
Now that they have happy hour and extra tables outside for the summer, it's like the one thing no one thought could get better actually did. BOOM.
(5)Dean N.
First time dining here for our party of four. Really a 3.5 star review but there is no option for that. The house margarita (T9) is really good, but upgrading to the El Jefe is not worth the price difference as they don't taste much different. My wife and I subbed for the chile tequila in our T9s and they were great. Did not care for the strawberry margarita as it had a strawberry "flavor" taste rather than tasting like real strawberries. Ordered the chips and guacamole and none of us cared for the pureed guacamole. Reminded us of the stuff you buy in the grocery stores, both in taste and texture. Rather see a tableside preparation, or at least something better. Outstanding Caesar salad, one of the very best in town. And big enough that 2 people can split it. I'm not normally a fan of Chile Rellenos but my wife is. I can tell you this one is superb and I would order this in a heartbeat. Hanger steak was perfectly cooked, but the chile sauce was way too bitter. Shrimp was just ok, sauce reminds me of Italian white clam sauce (which I like), but not something I would order in an upscale Mexican restaurant considering more interesting ways shrimp could be prepared. Biggest letdown of all was the chicken enchiladas... There has been a number of yelpers complaining about their enchiladas ever since they first opened, yet the kitchen has been unwilling to change the preparation. The deconstruction thing looks great, just doesn't work when you actually eat them especially with over charred and dry chicken. And please guys, stop with all of the shredded lettuce, this isn't an enchilada salad (maybe this one is). I love chicken (and beef) enchiladas but would NOT order this version. Note to kitchen: change is good when your customers don't like what you are making. We were all going to do the chocolate mousse for dessert, but it has been removed from the menu....so we skipped dessert. Our service was top notch and servers were very friendly. We had several that worked our table, yet they all communicated very well with each other as to what we ordered. Just great service all around. The restaurant is very nice inside, but it can get quite loud so the owners might think about turning off the music as it certainly doesn't help the noise level. Will probably come back for the Caesar, margaritas, chile relleno, and to try some of the tacos as those looked pretty good. Much nicer vibe here than at Nuestra Cocina.
(3)Dan C.
The ceviche (striped marlin) was amazing. Also the chips and guac are a must order. I highly recommend the wild boar and fish tacos as well. We also ordered a side of the grilled green beans, definitely the most well prepared green beans I've ever had. Huge selection of tequilas and some very unique takes on the margarita.
(5)Linda W.
Excellent camarones and without cilantro. He likes the hot stuff but I prefer more nuanced flavors. Both are available and they have excellent Margheritas.

This review is a few weeks late. Sue and I came here on our anniversary back in mid-June. Don't know why it has taken me so long to type this review. It is what it is. You know the story already, but I will tell it to you anyway. Taqueria Nueve used to be on NE 28th (just north of Burnside). The place was always packed with lines out the door. It couldn't ever possibly close, could it? Yes, it could. Back in 2008 due to the down turn in the economy, Taqueria Nueve closed its doors and Portland was quite sad. I am told that I once ate at the first location, but in my recollection we went and the lines were too long to wait so we headed somewhere else and figured we would try again another time. The time never came. Sue had actually chosen somewhere else to go for our anniversary, but they were closed on Sunday's. I suggested this place. We pulled up the menu from their website and decided this would be our destination. We both started out with a Margarita ($8). Very yummy and refreshing and good on a warm Portland night. For food we decided to split the Caesar con Ceviche ($10.25). Wish there had been a bit more seafood in this dish, but it is one of the better (nontraditional) Caesar salads I have had in Portland. For my main I had the Enchiladas Verdes ($10.75) with Pollo Asado (Pescado is another option). Tortillas folded into green tomatillo sauce, topped with queso fresco, onion, cilantro and crema. The portion was a very nice size for the price. I couldn't stop eating as it was all very good. Didn't know if we would have room for dessert. Thought about getting the Tres Leches to go, but ended up finding a bit more room in the old stomach and had it there. It comes with a seasonal fruit. This time it was cherries which we ordered on the side. The cake was very good. Everything you would expect from Tres Leches and more. Service was very friendly and attentive. I am still quite happy to find that in Portland even 8 years on in my living here. Good service goes a long way in making me want to revisit a place over and over again.

This is a fancy taqueria. If you're looking for a hole the wall joint, this isn't the place. Service is great! The owners always seem to be there, so I'm sure that helps. Stick with the T9 margarita. It is their house drink and is pretty tasty. The tacos are probably the best in the area, but they're a little pricey, so unfortunately not a place we can hit up all the time. I understand since they have some cool stuff like wild boar and brisket tacos. The pescado taco is a little too tangy. The first time I had it, it was spot on. The second and third times i didn't like the tanginess. So now I just stick with some of their other delicious offerings. Good place for a date if you are looking for something that is nice, but not white table cloth. Ask the owners about the story on how they started. It is a cool one!

First of all the Boar carnitas taco here is amazing. The boar was juicy and salty and amazing. However, the chicken asada taco was nothing special and I waited over half an hour for my two tacos to be made. And the weird thing was it wasn't even that busy. Unfortunately that made me not want to return to Taqueria Nueve.

I was extremely disappointed with my enchiladas. It was just a tortilla with nothing inside. It had some sauce, green beans and lettuce on top, but nothing inside. I repeat, nothing inside. The waiter communicated that there would be black beans. There was not a single black bean in there, just a soggy tortilla. If you don't eat animals, do not waste your time and money here. It's really not that hard to have beans without meat. They made it clear that they have no interest in future business with anyone who doesn't eat animals and so here I am writing my response to the middle finger of a "dinner" I just payed too much for. I am wishing there were negative stars I could give. I will not be returning.

My waiter was new but he was amazing! My girlfriend and I were visiting from Los Angeles and were delighted to find an authentic mexican food place! I love that all of the staff is moving to help the customers and greet the new patrons that walk in. I never see one person in one place. I believe that the owner was also walking around and serving food. On top of the great hospitality there was also amazing food! If you stop here DO THE TACOS!! ONE OF EVERYKIND! I ate about 5.5 tacos and loved them all. The Carne asada was amazing and Not chewy!! So tender while the carnitas had a perfect flavor. Everything was astonishing! We are for sure coming back next time from Los Angeles.

Having just moved here from Los Angeles, I find myself shocked to confess that I liked the tacos here better than anything I had in California. My wife and I tried virtually every offering from the taco menu and found each one to be completely unique and simply dripping with flavor. Can't wait to return.

Cocktails were delicious, service was great and food was good! Enchiladas were pretty tasty and I also ordered the guacamole on the side. Tasted like smooth store bought, no flavor guac but that was the only thing that didn't thrill me. If you are in the area, check it out. However, there's lots of good places for decent Mexican food in Portland so add this one to your list and let me know how they compare. I have a favorite but you'll have to guess where that is!

I never made it to the original Taqueria Nueve, so I was excited to try their reincarnation! My girlfriends and I had a lovely dinner with friendly service. The space was inviting and fun that they have all of their Kickstarter donors listed on the wall as "La Familia." I enjoyed the ceviche (the day's fish was ling cod) as well as a carnitas and a fish taco. The ceviche was fresh, the carnitas was full of flavor and the fish taco was good. My friend raved about her vegetal taco, which the server told us is always bigger in the summer because there are more fresh veggies to choose from! My cocktail (I think it was called the 9-0-mite) was a great sweet & spicy margarita, which I would definitely try again. And we shared the wonderful Tres Leches (see pic) for dessert...we were close to licking the plate! Overall, great spot & I'm so happy to have them in the Central Eastside, I will definitely be back!

Something to know about the enchiladas here is that they are deconstructed. Three tasty tortillas topped red or green sauce, then protein, then sour cream and cotija cheese. I ordered the pescado with verde sauce and absolutely loved it. The tacos are delicious, the tostada was delicious, really the food was top notch. The service and ambiance really left something to be desired. There is no place to wait if you put your name in for a table and we were told that we couldn't order a drink form the bar, that they would send a waitress over to us so that we could have a drink while we waited by the cramped space at the front door. 15 minutes later, that never happened so we went to the bar anyways. Our drinks sat there for about five minutes before we finally went and took them off the drink station ourselves. Once we got our table our server was very nice, however, after we ordered we hardly saw here. Had to order our second round of drinks from a different server, ask for our bill from a different server, and then give another server our card so we could finally get out of there. The space is dark, the chairs are hard metal with no padding, and they play music so loud as if to drown out any conversation you might want to have with the people next to you. If they just turned down the music a little bit everyone wouldn't have to speak so loudly and the atmosphere would be much more pleasant. All in all, the hassle of this place isn't worth the food.

I can't say enough about how good this place is. The drinks are deliciously concocted. The buffalo chile relleno with the green sauce, almonds, and lots of other tasty goodness is so satisfying. The guacamole tostada is the best in town. And their chocolate mousse with cacao nibs and a sprinkling of salt--perfect!!

Grand opening. Wow, nice drinks and great food. Everything you REALY wanted in Mexican food. It's next to the Next Adventure paddle shop and a great stop before a clinic. And guess what, after the clinic I stopped in again, this time with a friend. The Margarita Girl shaken up a wonderful liquid delight. There is a good variety to chose from and since I was out of my depth here, I picked her suggestion and she did good. The ceviche was very good and then I went for the tacos. The have eight different types of tacos that you can pick and chose from and fresh made hot sauces, one red and the other green. After that a flat iron stake that was cooked to order. Just nice with the good sauce. After the clinic I returned and sat back up at the bar. Talking with the crew there their real stools are 10 days away and they had to use rickety Ikea stools. I love the bar and the large round front glass of the building. These guys fix the place up nicely. There was a good crowd this evening and it may be because of the grand opening. The place was never over crowed, just nicely busy at a comfortable level. You can see inside the kitchen but there was no kitchen noise like in other restaurants. What you heard was the sound of the crowd talking in a murmur around you. For my second round I had the Pulpo. Very nice with a shot of mazcal. Then finished off the extended meal with the chocolate mousse that has a touch of chili. Nice tiny bit of heat for a chilly windy night.

My wife and I love Mexican food and we thought this place just made the Mexican food in PDX go up another step! I am a huge Carne Asada fan, especially coming from SoCal, and they did a great job with the seasoning/ marinade. The one thing I would add to the tacos is smaller diced up onion mixed with cilantro. Make it like a mix! Yes, it said it comes with it, but it was not in equal portions or it was barely there. Also, the server should ask if you would like an extra side of guacamole, because that just makes them more tasty, and it is an add on for them. My wife thought the fish taco and ceviche was wonderful, and she thought the Margaritas were excellent. What we really liked was that the crowd was a mix of both middle age and the more established older age (retired), which made for a great dining experience. There were no kids screaming, but then again we got there at 7pm. We walked in and just sat at the cool cement counter bar! I was going to give it 4 stars, but everything was good, even the chocolate mousse.

Mexican fusion with a PDX twist. Happy hour from 5 to 6 is definitely worth squeezing in. House margaritas are well made. Roasted poblano stuffed with buffalo meat was tender and flavorful. Carnitas taco melted in my mouth. Delicious!

(Read to the end, I promise you won't regret it) Thanks, taqueria nueve, for basically ruining my 5 year anniversary. This was my second time here (since they re-opened), and my boyfriend and I were expecting a stress-free evening and a nice dinner. The food, I will say, is decent. He got the $4 tacos, which were nice, but nothing special. They were on par with Por Que No. We shared the camarones, which were fantastic, and if we go back, will definitely re-order. I got the enchiladas rojos, which were literally a deconstructed enchilada, with folded up tortillas soggy with sauce, and grilled chicken breast on top. Okaaay?? I appreciate the art of deconstruction, but this was poorly executed in my opinion. It was way to literal, and just came off as lazy, point blank. So the food is decent, but the service was beyond sub-par. We were seated just before 9pm, so the dinner crowd had dissipated and there were a handful of 2-4 tops and a large party of a dozen or so. We ordered our drinks and food right off the bat, because it was 9pm, and we were effin hungry (right?). Ok. So, our drinks arrive along with some salsa and mexi pickles (carrot, onion, and jalapeños), but that was it, for about 15 min. It was like "Here, stare at this salsa for ever while we talk shit to each other and do absolutely nothing about preparing your food." We had ordered a side of guac, which came about 10 min after the salsa, but there was still nothing to consume said guac and salsa with, besides our forks. I love me some guac on a fork, but I'm usually not paying $6 for it. Now, I suppose it's possible that they're not the quintessential "basket of chips" type of restaurant, but then why bring the accoutrements 20 min before the kitchen even begins to think about preparing our order? Whatever, so I wave down a random server (which I hate to do, but ours was nowhere in sight) and ask for some tortillas, which were promptly delivered, and we were able to nosh enough to quiet our hunger-induced rage demons. So then my man's tacos (referenced above) arrive, and it was another 10-15 min before the rest of our order made it to the table. In the meantime, we had finished our drinks and ordered another round. After about 10 min of watching the bartenders doing nothing, I waved down another random server and informed them of our predicament. That server promptly made our drinks and our server delivered them, apologizing profusely, claiming "I'm sorry, I'm so scatter brained, but I don't want to bore you with the details of my day." Bitch, please... If I we're wittier than I am, I would've told her that I'd be happy to bore her with the details of how she's singlehandedly ruining my anniversary dinner. So, anyway, the rest of our food finally arrives. Now, mind you, I'm a lactard, and had ordered accordingly. Unfortunately my enchiladas came out covered in cheese. Shocker! I'm pretty dairy intolerant but I wasn't trying to wait another 15 min for them to remake my order, so I said fuck it, I'll pick it off. Our server apparently took notice as I was carefully removing as much cheese from my plate as possible, and basically insisted that the kitchen remake it. Fine. So while I'm waiting for my lactard-friendly enchiladas, my man noticed one of the staff walking out of the bathroom rubbing her nose.. That's when it all clicked.. They're HIGH AS FUCK! Completely distracted and unorganized, incessantly chatting and laughing as though they don't have a restaurant full of customers relying on them to keep it together. Fan-fucking-tastic! Priceless, really... It all started to make sense. It's Friday night (not that that matters to industry peeps) and they like to party. And, if I'm not mistaken, I believe the first time taqueria nueve went out of business it was due to the fact that they quite literally inhaled all their profits. Now, that's just what I heard, so take it with a grain of salt.. But seriously.. Get your shit together assholes! I NEVER tip less that 20%, but these people were so completely oblivious, you would've thought they were at a Bassnectar after party, not at work. Good luck with that. Serously..

We had a great meal here tonight. Service was prompt and friendly with timely drink refills and a pleasant server. It got busy after 6pm and while we waited a bit for entrees, our appetizers came out quickly. The ceviche was not a large portion but was deliciously fresh and well seasoned. It would be good for two people but not enough for four. My entree was the camarones and they were huge! I ate every last bit and would definitely order that dish again. My margarita was expensive at $10 for the upgraded tequila (there is an even more expensive version for $12) and was delicious, but couldn't compare to the value of Por Que No's pint sized $8 margarita (though it may have been a tad tastier). Everything we ate was well prepared and seasoned. I would eat here again.

In eyeballing the reviews, I don't see anyone mention one of the finer dishes I've ever had: their ceviche caesar salad. Outstanding. The guac was above average as were the tacos and cocktails. The service is also quite friendly.
(4)Suzanne M.
Our first visit was good but our second visit was AMAZING!! We had the octopus, ceviche, and boar tacos. This is the reason it was amazing, the combination is perfection !!
(5)David B.
Some friends invited us to meet them here for dinner. It's a cozy little place with a friendly vibe. The food was amazing! We started with their ceviche that comes on a tostada shell. Ended up ordering two more, no shame at all! The chorizo relleno special was some of the best chorizo I've ever had. Great fish and chicken tacos as well. Really good margaritas with plenty of tequila. Can't wait to go back. Excellent food!!
(3)Priya M.
I've had such amazing Mexican food in Portland that this place was just 'Meh'. Ambiance is great, cocktails were fine, but food was just about OK. I had enchiladas rojas and they were not great, not even memorable. It's OK overall, but skipping this one it won't be bad at all.
(3)Anthony B.

(4)Dan C.
(4)Chelsea A.
Wonderful serves every time. Best house made margaritas! Love the garlicky Caesar salad and delicious tacos.

Great fresh ingredients make really great Mexican food. Don't miss the guacamole tostata. Service was excellent as well as all the hot sauces and pico.

(5)Brian D.

So yummy! Suadero tacos are the best thing ever!
(5)Michelle F.

(5)Reyes F.
BOOM.

(5)Vanessa G.
Everything I had on the menu was great . Food tastes fresh and not your run of the mill Mexican. Had the enchiladas verde. Loved how it had grilled chicken and layered tortilla. All in all a great dining experience, I would recommend it to anyone .
(5)Armain A.
Amazing tacos and the Mole Chicken looked amazing. Very authentic flavors & good atmosphere, too. Will definitely be on my the top of my list when craving good Mexican food in PDX.
(4)Amy V.
(2)Dan W.
(5)Af R.
(5)Jeff N.
(2)Michael B.
(4)Cass C.
A must stop in Portland - excellent food!
(5)Nisu S.
(4)Anthony R.
The service was very disappointing and the food not as good as I remember at the old location.
(3)corey b.
(5)Ashley B.
(1)Carey D.
(5)Brenda E.
(3)Chelsey E.
