This restaurant is awesome. You can get as little or as much as you want. The fish is fresh. Not processed to retain color etc like at Saburo. Way better than Saburo. The train is replenished fast. Takahashi is behind the sushi counter taking orders too. He does an amazing job. Love it!

Stopped in on a Friday around 2 for a late lunch with my beau. I loved that the sushi track was actually a train; super bonus points from me!!!!! Sushi was good, and a step up from normal sushi tracks establishments, and you do have the option of ordering from the sushi chef, but in my mind the point of a sushi track/train is to not have to order and wait. I wish the plates had the standard yellow, black, blue, and red edges for pricing. Instead it was priced by white, beige, some flowers, lots of flowers, so it was somewhat difficult to decipher what price point I was at. The decor was just nothing and kinda lame, and not really enciting. There were about ten or so customers during the time we were there and about half were regulars and the sushi chef and they seemed to know each other on a first name basis. I wouldn't go out of my way to come again, but I had a decent meal.

I found Sushi Takahashi 2 several years ago when I was working in the area. I loved their take on the sushi go-round style restaurant with the use of a train. They even have faux mountainous tunnels where the train enters the back of the back of the restaurant. Sushi Standards Rating Scale: What was ordered: This is a sushi go-round establishment, so everything was taken off the train. These included: sake salmon, avocado roll, signature sweet tofu and avocado roll, rock n'roll. I might be forgetting something, but there were seven plates total. Total Cost: $12.25 (before tip) Décor: Quirky and unique, but definitely does not exceed expectations of what you would see at a sushi go-round [3 stars] Creativity: This really is a week spot for most sushi go-rounds in my book. They are so busy mass producing that creativity goes right out of the window. [0 stars] Presentation: Presentation was adequate, but again, nothing special. [3 stars] Freshness: I got there right when they opened, so of course everything was fresh, but I can also vouch for their adequate freshness most of the time based on several years of patronage. [3 stars] Taste: Everything tastes good. I am especially fond of their sweet tofu and avocado roll. [3 stars] Sustainability: N/A [0 stars] Service: This is where Sushi Takahashi 2 really shines. You would expect service to be sub-par at a sushi go-round, but Kashi the sushi chef is always super friendly and everyone on his wait staff are very attentive and friendly. [5 stars] Bang for your buck: They are not the cheapest of sushi go-rounds, but they are definitely reasonably priced. [4 stars] Overall: The highlights of Sushi Takahashi 2 are the train, Kashi the sushi chef, and the overall friendly service. This is definitely one of my favorite sushi go-round restaurants, but it is still a sushi go-round.

Nice spot but tricky to get to. It's in that nether land just south of PSU across I-405. It does have a small parking lot so after driving around trying to find it, you can at least park. Or take the number 8 Bus and get off at Terwilliger Plaza and walk one block (east). It's related to the other Sushi Takahashi, it serves quality stuff, reasonable price. The dishes come round and round on the train. Watch The Man make it and enjoy.

This is a cute tiny restaurant that had great fresh sushi. It was sooo cheap and so good. Its a very humble setting but totally worth the stop. The sushi track was a train pulling it around, pretty cute. We will be returning.

This is probably the worst sushi place I've ever experienced. I've gone to sushi places in the Bay Area, Chicago, and even in Lima, Peru. The dishes here were oversalted and the fish was often hard and tough. The basic cucumber rolls (six, served on a white plate) left a terrible taste in my mouth, still persisting now, three hours after the fact. They seemed to instantly dry out my mouth, and it eventually spread to my throat and is now affecting my stomach (usually strong). It's destroying me from the inside out, like a dull poison that works slowly, paralyzing your body in the end, and leaving your tongue swollen and hanging out. (Maybe too dramatic on that one.) While the food was terrible, I will give the place two stars instead of one because the owners were so nice, and the place was very relaxed and pleasant, with a good vibe all around. And it was cheap! $10 filled up two stomachs.

Love this place and love the people who run it and wait on you. This is a fun, little sushi go round. My fiancee and I can both be fed, full, and happy for around $20.

Given that they are set up to produce quickly (I.e they bring out a tray of presliced fish and slap it on the rice), I was surprised that the service was still slow. I felt it was uninspired, and I don't see the benefit of going here vs getting sushi from the supermarket if you're hard up for some fish. The prices aren't compelling and the quality isn't enough to bring me back even if I were starving.

Tonight I dropped by with a best friend for a late dinner and was very happy that I had found the "Old Takahashi" that used to be on Broadway near Burnside from 2005-2009 or so. Very modest and small place located in a very small strip mall across the freeway from Portland State University (about a 7 minute walk from South campus), with a U shaped sushi bar (there are roughly 20-25 stools around the bar) that screams "welcome!" once you walk through the door. Run by a Japanese woman and man (the gentleman does a nice job running the sushi bar solo) the atmosphere is spartan, clean, and homey. Had a great time reconnecting with my friend while having very nice nigiri hamachi, salmon their famous fried snapper roll (my fav from the old place) and the "Takahashi roll" that has salmon, avocado topped off with fish eggs. Always best to go with the specials and the hamachi was the special of the day, very tasty. Solid, inexpensive sushi that, while not spectacular, is wonderfully consistent and served with speed and congeniality (at a certain point the Sushi Ichiban sushi chefs got a little too hipster cool and detached for me.....don't need obsequiousness just a little attention). This place has good service from folks who seem, from all I could gather, good people. Oh...and also, and this is a very important point, the sushi chef has great musical taste, dude loves progressive jazz especially the kind with Brazilian overtones. Niiiiiice, coming here with my partner very, very soon!

This is your mom n pops owned sushiland. One of favorite places to pick up sushi when i'm downtown. About 2 mins from PSU campus, this place is perfect for the college student on a budget. and a huge plus, its very clean and sanitary. The sushi plates ride on a miniature train set that goes round n round. My regular picks everytime I come here: - tempura tai - deep fried snapper on piece of rice with a light creamy sauce. -salmon skin roll (add avacado) - salmon skin fried to a nice crisp and finely chopped rolled with scallions, carrots, cucumber -Salmon nigur i - fresh piece of salmon on rice. Portions are kind of on the small side but the price is as well -spicy tuna hand roll - the spicy tuna mix used here is different from other sushi joints. Their version is slightly creamier n has more of a spicy kick, it's just as good maybe better. Finished off with chopped scallions. Ohhhh weeee! - fried oysters!

ok i'm so used to Marinepolis this place doesn't especilaly strike me as "cheap" (yes, pricewise). I loved the train idea though, and the place looks very authentic. My favorite: salmon skin hand roll.

We love this place. We are happy to drive across town to go to Portland's best sushi track restaurant. Service is very good and the quality of the sushi is excellent. My 4 year old loves the train and the sushi!

they have a "happy hour" that starts at 830, to-go only, half off everything. Its a great deal and they are always really friendly. I live close so its convenient for me. I think im going for dinner tonight actually.

I used to go to Sushi Takahashi when it was still down on Broadway and was a fan for a long time. Last night was the first time I went to ST2 in SW and it was a resounding MEH. The portions were way smaller than they used to be, for example the cucumber salads were in what amounted to a dixie cup and they were only 1/3 full. Give me a freekin break. The other house specials like tempura calamari nigiri was much smaller than before also. Most everything good was well about the $1.25 starting price and I racked up $20 worth of plates before I was even full. Everything was dissatisfying as far as taste goes, just lacking flavor. My go-to conveyor sushi joint has been Hana Sushi in Tigard and compared to that place ST2 doesn't even come close in regards to quality, selection and price. I have never been even able to come close to eating $20 worth of sushi at Hana, so I must say I was shocked that I had broken the $20 mark at ST2 with such a short stack of plates. Sushi Land is significantly better than ST2 and at the top of the heap is Sushi Hana. For $20 you can get a pretty nice plate of sushi at a lot of other top notch sushi joints in town, so I can't imagine why anyone would bother with ST2. Weak, weak, weak.

I am appalled at how dirty the place is now! Our family used to really enjoy this sushi restaurant in years past, but the quality, portion size, freshness and cleanliness has taken a serious hit. The trains, as well as the tracks, the sushi is carried on, are covered in grime!! Food, sticky stuff, dirt, oil, etc. The clear plastic lids were all sticky and coated with "yuck" as well. The salmon nigiri still had a strip of skin attached and was so chewy. There were 20+ prepared sushi dishes stacked up on the counter, pre-made and waiting to go out... no refrigeration at all! I stopped my daughter mid bite, paid for our uneaten food, and promptly left. Very disappointing to say the least.

Wow, so good and so cheap! Maybe I think its cheap because Ive only lived in seattle and honolulu, but by my standards, wow! good service, good food, and a nice local vibe.

After years of enjoying Takahashi 2, I had a bad enough experience to declare that I don't intend to darken that doorway one more time. All this time it's never been more than a mediocre experience anyway, but my son loves the place and the owner has always seemed very nice. But tonight it felt like we were a bother to be there. Someone phoned in a big pickup order, and that was the only priority, apparently. Any attempt to ask for something or turn in a sushi slip was met with a very curt and impolite wave of the hand and a few words of refusal. So we ate what was on the train, your standard small rolls, none of which I would have ordered otherwise, but they were there. In the meantime, the woman who works the register and takes care of stuff like tea, miso soup, and edamame pretty much ignored us. Toward the end of our meal, when the person who ordered fifteen takeout tubs of sushi came and went, we were the only people in the place and we were still ignored. I felt invisible, disrespected, and sad. Takahashi is okay for couples who can get in and out, but it's not all that, it's impossible for more than three or so, and I know I can get as good or better without dealing with the crappy service any longer. Sad to have been burned by such an experience.

I was disappointed when I entered the place. It is small (which is ok) it appears to not be very tidy(which is not ok) the sushi looked a bit pale and lacked flavor. The staff was helpful, it just wasn't what I was looking for (either time I went) when I was looking for quick sushi without paying the owners rent with my meal ticket.

    (2)
  • Iver B.

A small place with a friendly chef, good variety, fresh fish, and quick service. At the end of our meal, it was near closing time, so the chef gave us a big takeout box of sushi for free!

  • J S.

This is usually a good place to get a quick sushi meal. I say usually because every now and then you plan on it and they end up being so busy that there's no place to sit and a very long wait for takeout. They also don't pick up the phone if you try to call in a take out order. Often, everything works out the way it's supposed to, and then it's one of my favorite sushi restaurants in Portland. Those times, the sushi is fresh, owner and sushi chef is personable, and wait service is polite and quick. I go here hoping for those times.

  • Kimberly G.

Great for price and service. Will definitely be back. Sushi chef nice and waitress was nice also. It is a tiny little place but I like this better than a snobby sushi joint. Clean and small. Fish tastes fresh, rice was a little dry. But everything was good overall.

  • Keven R.

The salmon skin roll was easily my favorite and the best I've had in town. The quality of fish is hands down at its best and even though it's a hole-in-the - wall establishment. Make sure to make happy hour but even regular service hours are affordable. Located also next to PSU makes it accessible for students and anyone driving. I recommend this place for a quick snack that will leave your taste buds wanting more. It would be amazing if the place could hold more than 20 people. The capacity of the restaurant was maxed out pretty much from the beginning of our meal to the end. Other than having such a small staff that made the wait Ling things were great. The family owned restaurant deserves 5 stars, however waiting kicks it down a notch.

    (4)
  • Adam T.

Quaint, authentic, great value, very warm and hospitable service. Total hole in the wall (In a good way). Hours aren't great, but that's what you get when there is one chef. A fair trade off for consistency in the product. Like others mention, the seared salmon is a highlight. He manages to make it not taste like butane like some other places do.

Love this place... Kashi the owner always aims to please. Always very high quality and economical. My standbys r the salmon avocado rolls off the train, uni, fried oyster hand rolls, flamed coho salmon, sweet large scallops. Not good for a group as u r sitting at a counter and only 2 people running the show, but have always found them to b efficient at getting me my food. No frills just great sushi at bargain prices

I've been coming to sushi Takahashi for 4 years now. There are delicious house specials and monthly specials, the staff treats you like family, Japanese owned (just sayin.) I always feel comfortable after a long day at work, in this quaint and accommodating environment. They serve a good selection of beer, wine and sake- and the miso soup is approved! The quality is consistent, and the price is absolutely right!

Mmmm my favorite kaiten sushi places in Portland... To start off, this place is unique with its trains instead of the usual conveyor belt style found in most places. Kudos! Even as a grown man I loved watching the trains come and go... Reminiscent of my childhood, but I digress. The real deal here is the sushi. Now, most kaiten sushi places fare between "alright" and "that really sucked" in terms of quality and freshness. However, I can safely say that Sushi Takahashi 2 is both fresh and tasty!! I ordered the black snapper, salmon, mackerel, squid, and scallop and they were all very fresh. Like another reviewer said, it is probably better to order off the paper menu as it will be fresher and prepared as you order. The folks running this place are Japanese and friendly enough, and there are always specials posted on the wall so be sure to look for the latest offerings The prices are on-par with other kaiten sushi restaurants so I will definitely be back!

I enjoyed Sushi Takahashi when I lived close-in to downtown. Everything tasted fresh and the owner was really sweet. They always recommend things to try and give you quick service unless it's crazy busy and even then, you can grab things off the sushi train. It's not my favorite sushi restaurant in Portland but it's fine if you're racing by and wanting some fresh fish.

My favorite local spot! Amazing and authentic sushi for a great price. So much better than your typical sushi train. I can't go on enough about how great the food is. The service is another story. They open at 5 but don't ever both showing up then. The employees must show up at 4:59 because nothing is ready and you will wait a good 25-30 minutes for the train to be loaded and ready and they are scrambling. Also, if you don't see a scooter parked out front there is a good chance they are understaffed. There are only 3 employees I've ever seen and when one of them has the night off and they are moderately busy it is AWFUL. Waited 30 minutes for our check last time. Only one employee making hot food, serving, cleaning tables, filling water, writing checks and cashing people out. She needs a raise. Also can be hit or miss with how many children come in to this tiny place. Still, the food will keep me coming back again and again!

This is a hidden gem in Portland. After losing three of my favorite local sushi spots in over a year period I was left with going extremely high-end or extremely low-end. Neither excited me, but finding my new favorite in a small strip-mall didn't seem possible. Though this place might not look like much from the outside (or even the inside for that matter) the food and prices will blow you away. Great rolls and nigiri, always cut by the store owner. I'd highly recommend this hole in the wall if you too are looking for some great food at an even better price.

I visit all the time for happy hour, which is from 830-900 monday-friday. The sushi chef is kinda famous and everyone loves him. The sushi itself is okay, not the best I've had but not even close to the worst. I would not travel across town to get here but since its so close to where I live and its such a good deal, I'm giving it 4 stars

The place was pretty grimy. Menus & train that the food goes around on. I was disappointed. Sushi Hanna is a much better deal.

Love that the sushi comes on trains instead of the regular conveyor belt. Only been to this place one would love to try it again. Happy hour is great. Place is a bit run down more of a mom and pop feel than the typical sterile feeling at other conveyor belt sushi places. The place is tiny, seating is limited.

  • Stacey N.

I've been coming here for years. The owner is extremely personable. My favorites are the tuna handrolls. If you come shortly before closing, you will get hooked up with discount prices and extra sushi to go.

    (4)
  • Laura C.

For sushi go-around, this is as good as it can get. The fish doesn't taste fishy, the business is family run and gives personable service, and the prices are great! I am wary of the sushi go-around places that give the same price for each plate, because it seems to affect the quality. This place has dishes from $1.50 to $3.00, I believe. My miso soup was $1.00 so the dishes may even go that low too. I honestly just don't recall that specific detail. Anyway, I've been there twice this week and have been highly satisfied for each of these first two visits of mine. I will definitely be back!

We found this place during our recent visit to Portland accidentally, just noticed it while sitting in traffic. This is a little quiet place - with four companies seated it feels like a challenge to seat the fifth one. Sushi is great, with fresh components that make even the simplest design taste amazing, and cheap - we visited twice and paid $10 and $14 (pre-tip) respectively. If you order from paper menu instead of taking pre-made plates from the train, you get your order really fast, and you can watch the chef working on it. And did I mention the totally cute train that circles the counter carrying the emergency supply of sushi for those who can't wait for their order? Note of caution: this place calls forth all clumsiness in a person. Typically I can make it through the meal without throwing food all over the table, but here the chef gives you these little plates with sushi and wasabi from hand to hand, and I just couldn't miss this perfect opportunity to turn them over.

  • Erin P.

Kashi, the sushi chef, is the best! He's friendly and happy to make things that aren't normally offered. I'd been going weekly for six years before moving to the other side of Portland. Even though I only get there every few months now, Kashi still asks about my business and kids, and makes me my "special" favorites from memory. Yep, it's a dive. It's a Portland dive and I love it. Anything less than 5 stars means that the guest just doesn't get it...this is exactly the kind of small business that makes a community interesting.

We thoroughly enjoyed our visits to this sushi restaurant (only wishing our trip to Portland could be longer so that we could visit there more). Sushi is fantastic, the best we have ever had. We liked the salmon skin roll, Dungeness crab roll, sea eel roll in particular. They are unusually fresh, and oh boy aren't they tasty. The prices are phenomenal too. We think it's perhaps half the cost of a typical sushi restaurant (and twice delicious). This is hands down our best experience in Portland (Portland is a friendly city, so this means a lot we think). We went there two nights in a row in our short visit to the west coast. We definitely look forward to going back to this magical and unpretentious place.

A small restaurant with a train track that carries servings of sushi around for you to pluck off. You can also order off the menu. The sushi was very fresh and very reasonably priced. I would certainly come back.

I absolutely love this place iv only been here a handful of times and will still come back here when I can. The place has a homey feel to it. I love the decorations. Everyone is so friendly! The staff is always smiling and wiling to help. They have good sashimi and I love there cho cho! Which is salmon and tuna mixed togther with house sauce. You can sit at a table and order or at the little cute bar. They have alot of options to choose from. I never am disappointed.

I'm nervous to give this place 5 stars for the sheer fact that it may draw MORE crowds and create a longer wait :) ...yes, I am a selfish-Portlander. My other half and I were trying to find someplace new to try out for sushi...he is not so hot on my favorites (Saburo and Mio) and I am not so hot on his favorite (usually involving a train). I actually Yelp'd "best sushi train" and Sushi Takahashi appeared. I knew exactly where it was but had barely noticed it in all the times I had passed it. When we walked in, it was tiny...quaint...and packed. There was, indeed, a train...but it had very few items on it that were fresh and actually had variety! It was really easy to order something fresh, unlike other places where you are chasing down the chef. Oh, and, I have to add about the "elephant in the room"...the fact that the people working was a Japanese couple...yes...Japanese! Last I checked, sushi is Japanese, so this made me thrilled! (Nothing like going to a Lebanese restaurant run by Hispanics, or Ethiopian with all caucasian staff...not racist...) ...There is nothing better than people from the actual culture making the actual food...closest to the real thing!!! Five-plus stars for Sushi Takahashi!

If you're looking for great tasting sushi at a price that won't make you declare bankruptcy, then this is your joint. The owner and chef is always nice and courteous and works harder than almost anyone you'll observe in the food industry. Some of my favorites include the Albacore, Salmon, tempura snapper and Hamachi. Due to its smaller size, seating can sometimes be a challenge but well worth it. A definite must try.

I chose this restaurant after reading the Yelp reviews. Man was I disappointed. I have been to many track sushi restaurants and I know to expect the quality to be less than the ones with table service. That said, this is the worst sushi I've eaten. The service was decent and the place was clean but the rolls I ordered had obviously been sitting out for some time. One in particular came with browned avacado and the rice on the sushi roll had turned brown from absorbing the sauce it was drizzled in. The menu lists the rolls but does not give a description and when we asked the waitress, she was unable or unwilling to describe them more than repeating the name. With sushi restaurants being a dime a dozen in Portland, I would suggest going somewhere else.

Kind of awesome, in a totally average way. Cute little place, the little choo-choo that carries the sushi around the bar is a nice touch. I went in on a Friday night around 6:30, and there were a few people at the counter. I was promptly told that everything on the train was half off cause it was happy hour, and also, they only had take out. This was confusing because they were clearly open, and there were people eating at the counter. I picked out 4 small dishes from the train, which is hard because the plastic covers over the plates steam up, so you can't really see whats inside, plus they are moving on a train. So I got about $25 worth of sushi rolls for $5.75, which was incredible. When I got it home I was less impressed. The best sushi roll was very much like something you would get at the grocery store in the deli section. And some of them were downright dried out and gross. I would go back if I were in the area, but don't listen to these other reviewers that say the sushi is great. It is not great. If I go back, I will look at the train, but not order from it.

For a sushi place I would think the place is clean and nice. Just because the most of the food have to be fresh. I just heard nice things but this is not my favorite nor my least favorite. The food price was okay. I just wanted to try it out.

I love things served on a model train. You could probably serve me warm turtle poo from a Lionel and I would giggle with unbridled delight. Fortunately, this little sushi joint leaves turtle poo off the menu and sticks to sushi. Good sushi at that! The selection of rolls, nigiri and salads is great, and there is a decent menu if you're not into the tricked out conveyor belt train. The staff was super friendly, and the prices were great. There were also a number of regulars, which made me pretty comfortable with the idea of going back. I probably didn't need the encouragement (y'know... the train and all.)

My pocket loves cheap sushis, conveyor belts sushis, happy hour sushis. However, my semi foodie self prefers fresh sushis. I passed by Sushi Takahashi 2 few times on my way home from work. I decided to try it out and see what happens. This place is tiny. It is hole in the wall place. One Japanese guy works in the middle and they only have one server. They were pretty busy when my DL and I walked in. We got seated right away and I was pretty impresed to see an actual toy train is circling around instead of the conveyor belt. The toy train is not very long which is a good thing because they will need to keep making fresh sushis. The price range per plate is about the same as Sushiland, ranging between $1.50 - $5. However, the quality are better than Sushiland. The salmon was fresh. The tuna was excellent. Deep fried calamaris were perfect. They didn't taste old. Another bonus point is that they have "hand rolls" sushis. You can order them of the menu and the nice guy will make them for you. FRESH FRESH FRESH. The only problem is, since they are a small restaurant and only one server. The server lady seemed very overwhelmed and we needed to repeat our orders for drinks. Besides that, sushis are cheap and good. Somehow, I managed to spent $21 worth of sushis (by myself) and left a trail of more than ten plates behind. I'm so in trouble.

To those reviews trying to talk smack about this place - I'm sure you can find somewhere with better sushi. You just better bring a wheelbarrow full of money. For the price I have found nothing better and fresher. The turnover is high and the fish comes in regularly. I know this because I eat there frequently, as I have for the last 2-3 years. They know me by name and I always enjoy a great lunch. I do stress, this is a quick lunch sushi. It is fresh and good, but not great or the best in town. If you are completely uptight and must have only the finest sushi - go somewhere else. I dont want to hear your whining while i'm eating lunch.

I love this sushi place. I am not in Portland very often by when I am I eat here and will detour out of my way on the freeways to end up here. I am a sucker for the sushi places where you grab stuff off moving vehicles and pay by the plate, but even if I wasn't, this place is both cheap and offers good quality fish. A very rare combination in America that I would love to see more often.

Sushi Takahashi 2 is one of the best sushi restaurants in pdx. Not only is the food really fresh and amazing, the thing that makes st2 better then the rest is that its owned by the chef, the only chef, that serves 5 days a week. He is very skilled, remembers your name, and your order, and will make you anything you want, super quickly. Go here if you love good sushi and great personal service.

Well, it ought to be a pleasant surprise that you can find a less-than-bewildering lunch Asian menu, and that at a decent price, right here! Where indeed is here? Across the I-405, a la Broadway. As such, it's never been found, though it's been here for over a year. A hideaway; good stuff. I've never been to the original, the Holgate establishment which I hear is the best. Regardless, and I'm reluctant to say this, because I like to hear Fear and NoFX on a loudspeaker, but it's a drab, subdued climate, that serves great tempura and eel. For the buck, of course, but if you want to go cheap and eat shit, go to King Burrito, and the next day have your asshole hanging out of sphincter like a Preparation H, commercial...well, go for that. Just don't try the sake: It's like a Camo malt liquor of rice wine - really, like an Albertson's shelf sake...Grrrr-oOose! For that, spend a couple dollars more and go to Toney Bento. Regardless, though, this place is nice, and a bang for the buck. Quite a bit of a bang, so long as you go for the white and tan plates, with maybce a blue or a flower plate to liven things up on you delectables. Sweet Jesus! Wait, no gefilte fish...wait, certain Gentiles know their.seafood even better! than the Elect that supposedly passed through a Parted Red Sea. *meow*

We make the trip from NE Portland about once a month because we LOVE Sushi Takahashi! Chef Kashi is always super friendly and nice, the food is always great, love the train and they usually have good music playing too. Some people on Yelp have commented that it is a dive, but I disagree. I think that here in Portland everything's so styled and hip that a place like this may seem dated or low rent in contast. In my eyes it's perfectly non-pretentious, authentic to itself without trying to be anything other than what it is. Kind of like how places were 30 years ago before everything became so fakey precious or ironic. I love it.

Everything's pretty good there. The person making sushi seems to enjoy what he's doing. The reason for 4 stars rather than 5 is that they charged me $11 for two plates of uni. On the wall it says 1 uni for $3 and 2 for $5.50. So I ordered 2 plates. He gave me 4 uni in total so I thought one plate have 2 uni. So I ended up paying extra $5.50 for mistake they made.

I've lived close but never been. The kids and I love sushi, but the wife doesn't. She will eat other Japanese, just not sushi. Boy have I been missing out! The fish is excellent and reasonably priced. They have some unique stuff like seasonal fresh sardines, and fried salmon collar (right now). Their rolls are quite good. The sushi rolls around on a little O scale train with flat cars, and the chef makes special requests. It's a tiny place, I think they can seat 15-20 only around the bar. I love the look. They have vertically lettered signs (in English) a la Japan that gives it a cool authentic look. I thought the service was good and prompt. Only one waitress, so she keeps busy. It is a destination. I will be back.

Sushi Takahashi 2 is a great place for fresh, affordable, delicious sushi. Kashi (the chef) is extremely generous and will often throw in an extra handroll or other freebies. While everything on the train is good, the trick to this place is to order off the menu. The best dishes are: creamy spicy tuna handroll, spicy creamy scallops, fried oyster handroll, salmon skin handroll, tempura tai, and the tempura calamari, roughly in that order. The uni is delicious too of course. Sometimes, when Kashi is swamped with orders, it may take a little longer to place your own order, but rest assured that he's doing his best to satisfy all customers! It's tough being a one-man show. His generosity, the quality of the food, and the affordable prices all outweigh the occasional wait that customers might have to endure. All-in-all, Sushi Takahashi 2 is an awesome place to swing by and snag some cheap sushi. Thanks for being the man, Kashi-san!!

Is this place ever open? Been by 3 times in last couple months, and never open! sushi train wasn't super exciting, but its cheap. So that's plus. Good post-Sukis spot. 4 stars cause I think they its a good, fast place to get some cheap sushi.

This place is a lot of fun. The train, the quirky decorations, the cozy/intimate atmosphere, all combine to make this a great place to hang out with your friends or loved ones for a quick meal. the happy hour to go boxes are pretty nice too! I'm giving this place 5 stars because it may not be the fanciest sushi place, but for the price and convenience it's great.

Had lunch here and it didn't "break my bank". Sushi was pretty fresh, but be prepared to wait in line Fridays. If you can arrive at the restaurant at the right time, lunch may go very quickly - like 10 to 15 minutes. That said, perhaps consider another establishment if you need to "settle a deal" or attend to a job interview during this time. I will be back, but feel like I have to drive by to see if they are open during normal hours?!?

This is one of the friendliest and nicest sushi bars I have been to in my travels. Chef Kashi is a true artisan and is always friendly and willing to explain things even at the busiest of times. The staff is very attentive, friendly, and do their best to remember what you like from visit to visit and even make suggestions based on what you have had before. The food is fresh, tasty, and the menu is diverse enough that you cannot get bored with the offerings; not to mention that they always have new things come up randomly as the seasons change and these limited time items are very much worth trying. Also worth noting: they have a happy hour for both sake and sushi (where take out sushi is 1/2 price). I cannot recommend this place enough.

Sushi Takahashi is our favorite sushi place to go in Portland. This place is in a run down strip mall in SW Portland. You would never decide to come here if you happened to notice it driving by. Walking in, you would probably consider turning around and walking back out because it looks completely ghetto and maybe not even Japanese. The decrepit train with sushi plates circling the counter adds to the questionable feel this place has. Resist that urge to leave, and sit down and get to know the chief. Ask him what's good, take note of the specials listed on the walls and order directly from him rather then taking plates from the train. You will be rewarded with outstanding sushi, on a good day, it's better then anything else you can get in Portland except for omakase from Hiro at Mirakutei. Also, if you like oysters, the oyster hand rolls are amazing. It's probably something he invented at home with his kids, but it's so good! If you like this place and become a regular, the owner will treat you right! This place get's better each time we go. The last thing is that this place is incredibly cheap. I mean, I could have come here when I was in college it's so cheap. Anyway, I'm a bit nervous to write a review like this, because I'm afraid that our little sushi secret will get out. Right now he's only open weekdays. Due to this and the location, this place is flying completely under the radar. I hope it doesn't change!

I'v been to so many sushi tracks in Portland, but never a sushi TRAIN track! This location is quit small, with a small track, BUT that means the sushi is always fresh and its not the american-ized garbage chock full of mayo and junk. The chef is japanese, the menu and specials are on the wall, and the food is super good! I will have to take the husband here soon.

My partner and I have tried a few sushi places around town, and as of now, Sushi Takahashi 2 is the best one we've found. This is due to a couple factors - One: the price (we got a 'lot' of food for us, and a bottle of sake, and it came out to less than expected, certainly less than a certain 'upscale' Burnside sushi restaurant that shall go nameless. Two: Takahashi and the people he has working with him are friendly, warm, and courteous. The food revolves around the seating area via a model train, which is a nice touch, though we had to ask Takahashi to slow it down. It was like trying to catch a fly with chopsticks...if you'll pardon the reference. The sake was pretty tasty, and the sheer variety of food on offer was amazing. If you ask the chef for something, he will personally make it for you if it's not already on the train, and hand it to you himself. Now that's service. Location, price, quality, and good service come together to make this little strip mall sushi joint one of the most memorable nights out in a while. We are definitely coming back..

I love this place! Overall it's clean, friendly, fresh and delicious. It's kinda hole in the wall, small seating area so if it's busy, you might have to wait a few minutes. However, both the head sushi chef and the other workers are all super friendly. The service can be slower if it's busy because it's usually just the sushi chef and then one or two other people in charge of water, bills, miso, etc. The fish quality here is good for such a cheap place, and they always have specials that are fresh and local, just ask the chef for his recommendation! Also, as an added bonus, one of the few sushi places I've gone that's actually operated by a Japanese person. I go and chat with the chef in Japanese the whole time I'm there and it's fun! They've got a small drink selection with some japanese beer, sake, as well as wine.

For a sushi place I would think the place is clean and nice. Just because the most of the food have to be fresh. I just heard nice things but this is not my favorite nor my least favorite. The food price was okay. I just wanted to try it out.

I've been coming here for years. The owner is extremely personable. My favorites are the tuna handrolls. If you come shortly before closing, you will get hooked up with discount prices and extra sushi to go.

Great for price and service. Will definitely be back. Sushi chef nice and waitress was nice also. It is a tiny little place but I like this better than a snobby sushi joint. Clean and small. Fish tastes fresh, rice was a little dry. But everything was good overall.

My favorite sushi place in Portland. I am not a sushi expert but I like the conveyer belt and the comfortable atmosphere. The owners are really nice too.

- fried oysters!

they have a "happy hour" that starts at 830, to-go only, half off everything. Its a great deal and they are always really friendly. I live close so its convenient for me. I think im going for dinner tonight actually.

We love this place. We are happy to drive across town to go to Portland's best sushi track restaurant. Service is very good and the quality of the sushi is excellent. My 4 year old loves the train and the sushi!

This restaurant is awesome. You can get as little or as much as you want. The fish is fresh. Not processed to retain color etc like at Saburo. Way better than Saburo. The train is replenished fast. Takahashi is behind the sushi counter taking orders too. He does an amazing job. Love it!

*meow*
