What can I say, Japanese and bento for one $? You get complimentary salad and miso soup. Miso did not have any tofu or green onions though. Salad was iceberg with mayo rice wine vinegar dressing, simple. Ordered spicy chicken yakisoba, not spicy really at all. Good size, comes with a dollop of rice, which seemed odd initially but goes well with the char grilled chicken in Yakisoba. Also got the 'dynamite' sushi roll. Not spicy as I somehow thought it would be. A little fishy tasting and sweet. I wouldn't get it again. Friends got: spicy chicken plate 6.95 for big portion, looked delicious and a bento box off the lunch menu, for the lunch price! Who would've thought?! The one odd and notable thing was after a few minutes of arriving, being seated and receiving menus, owner (male) approached table I assume to take our order. However, did not say a word. I think they need to work on their social skills.

We went here and had Sushi and it was surprisingly fresh and tasty. The wait staff was very tentative and professional. The salmon nageri was huge and amazing. It's a good combination of price point, quality, and service.

Confirmed - Fish portions are generous on the Nigiri sushi. I've had the Sushi lunch bento which is a rocking value as it comes complete with soup salad gyoza tempura and cali roli and nigiri (4 pieces) at 8 dollars. holy goodness batman. Sushi can be so expensive at most places. For dinner I tried the regular sushi plate which is tuna roll plus 7 pieces of Nigiri sushi. the fish slice covers and nearly wraps around the rice brick. Again a good deal at 11.00 Now I've had a slight tummy ache but I can't tell if it's because I'm just eating too much Wasabi. Since theirs is really potent. The soup needs to be hotter. i don't understand how it was hard to do. the salad is basic, actually a bit sub par but free and fresh. Service can be pretty slow during the dinner rush. The buser/servers are just not that efficient in their jobs and I saw two customers who's bills were rung up wrong or handled incorrectly and slowed down the service. If you can wait or go in the off hours, the value is pretty good whether you want hot stir fry or sushi. You just have to relax and go with it. Or get togo (which they were pumping out those orders on the double.)

A mixed bag. The food was good and I will be back. Sushi portions are huge, too big, like bedspreads. Fish was fresh and mostly good (salmon excellent), but the hamachi (usually my favorite) was stringy and not very flavorful. Waitstaff seemed to have good intentions and good work ethics but also seemed very inexperienced. They were overwhelmed and stressed out, and made mistakes because of that. The little bit of kitchen food I had (chicken teriyaki) was yummy.

Food is delicious here. I've like everything I tried, the rolls, sushi and hot food are all very tasty. Love their selections of sake too. Fish is pretty fresh and great value for the price. Hard to leave the place without being full. Only thing stopping me from rating a 5 star is the service. It took 2 hrs from when we arrived to being seated and our orders to arrive to when we were done. That's way too long for dinner at a small place. If I have time to kill I'd come here more often for the yummy food.

I gave Sushi Kata in Milwaukie, near where The Bomber used to be only four stars, although because of the prices it could have easily been five. The sushi is excellent quality prepared by japanese sushi chefs. The Tempura is also very good. If you stick to those items you'll be most happy. The other cooked items on the menu such as teriyaki chicken etc. in a different category than sushi just weren't as good. Still I feel so lucky to have such a good Sushi place so close to where I live. Menu online. Order in advance. Take out. They get buzy.

Always fresh, always good. Portions are big and in line with the price. We get take out a lot and the only downside is that they use styrofoam.

Great service and reasonable prices. The sushi rolls are huge and delicious, I can normally down 4 rolls on my own, but here I was full after one and a half. Highly recommended, and will certainly come back.

One of the best sushi values you will find. Two of us went.....what would normally be 90 bucks was only 40. The quality of the fish was second to none. We had sashimi, sushi and rolls. All of them were great. Small little hole in the wall place with great service and even better sushi.

Love / Hate is the best way I can describe it... OK, "Love" may be a bit strong... My daughter and I eat here often on the weekends, and it's one of the places she requests the most. Their bento boxes are a great value, and I usually just order the Sushi Bento. Haven't explored much else on the menu, but when you find what you like... stick with it, right? What I don't like is the creepy, leering, owner (I presume) guy that is continually lurking about and making faces at and playing with (yes, TOUCHING / POKING / TICKLING!!!) the children. My daughter is nine years old now, and my wife and I have spent a lifetime teaching her what is socially appropriate and inappropriate contact with strangers. Parents... prepare to be undermined here. I've learned to have her sit up against the wall, and I'll sit next to her so he can't sneak up behind her. And when he can't get his hands on your kid, he just strolls about the restaurant and will come stand in front of your table and stare at you for a bit as you're trying to eat. Seriously??? On our last visit, I had to pull out the, "Please don't touch my daughter..." which led to a big awkward (but thankfully silent) scene. I know, I know... cultural differences... it's all innocent and whatnot... BS! Stop touching the kids dude... that &*%$ doesn't fly here. And that being said, I'll probably take my daughter there again the next time she asks. One more chance I guess.

Great food and service. We always enjoy a bento box for lunch. Grilled chicken rice California roll tempera shrimp and veggies. Along with miso soup and a small salad. Always fresh and quick. Service with a smile too. I highly recommend this place. Two thumbs up

The price was great as well as the soup and salad. I prefer my Sushi to fit inside my mouth in one bite rather than 3. The flavor was alright. Id perfer to go to a sushi track, more options.

Overall, this is a place for decent food, with large portions, at good prices. The decent food can be hit or miss though and will come out in bizarre orders. Last trip, chicken fried rice came out first, which was my husband's entree. Then soup/salad came. Then one sushi roll. Then our appetizer. And finally the other sushi roll. Since the sushi rolls were my entrees, and the larger roll came last, I was left with a long wait for food. And an appetizer 3/4 through the meal defeats the purpose. This is definitely an easier place to just order as small plates and share essentially since food comes in random order. As for quality of food, the sushi was fresh and enjoyable, large portions. The chicken fried rice... Wasn't fried. It was all thrown in a pan and then served, it wasn't fried, hence why it came first. It had decent flavor but not what expected. The harumaki had good flavor, but is an egg roll not a spring roll. The food selection is large, but the vast majority of rolls have imitation crab in them, which many people avoid. Service is slow but well intentioned. We've seen people had to get their own menus, silverware, etc. For the price, I'll return but I'll stick to the sushi and consider to go orders.

This is a gem in the midst of unsightly strip mall. I almost didn't want to share this review because I love this place and love the unpretentious-ness of it. So, when there is over an hour wait at all the other sushi restaurants in Portland, I'm giddy as any giant Asian would be scarfing down lots of inexpensive delicious sushi at prime dinner time on a weekend. Their sushi is good and bento boxes are pretty great too. Kata has an Korean mom-n-pops kind of feel. The owners are hard working, sweet and funny. It can get busy but I've never waited to long to get food, especially when they give complimentary salad and miso soup. One side note - there is a yummy doughnut shop a few shops down if you needed to top off your meal.

Saw this place has high reviews. Drove out to try it and was not disappointed. I believe it is family owned, or at least has that vibe. Several of the other customers seemed to be regulars and carried on conversations with the Staff like they were all friends. The food was also very fresh and quite good. The vegetables were cooked simple and not drowned in sugary sauce. The miso soup and a edemame were great, and the sushi was fresh tasting, filling, and overall good. I will be back to this place again!

Husband and I went one night when we were craving sushi. Soup and salad weren't anything to write home about (dressing was simply Hellman's mayonnaise like "salad dressing", not the typical ginger dressing you would expect at an sushi restaurant. Sushi portions were large and very reasonably priced, but the individual pieces were so large that we couldn't eat them in one bite, which to me somewhat defeats a sushi experience. The staff was friendly, and overall, the food was decent, but I would probably try somewhere else for higher quality sushi.

I love this place. I always order the spicy chicken teriyaki. The sushi is good as well. For the price you can't beat it. The one thing they could use is beer! I would dine in more if they had a few brews available.

My husband and I drive by this place everyday and always passed by because it's in a really horrible strip mall that has almost half of the stores vacant. Well, one day we decided why not try it? We got our food to go so I can't rate service, timing, or any of the other qualities of enjoying a sit down meal. I can say the waiter told us a 10 minute wait after he took our order and it was ready in about 5. Everything was bundled up including chopsticks and we were on our way. Hubby ordered the spicy teriyaki chicken and I got the pork asparagus. I know, why go to a sushi place and not get sushi? I don't eat seafood and hubby wanted to try a common dish before he tried the sushi. Both dishes were very very good. Good amount of heat to the teriyaki. Lots of veggies in my dish. We paid $12.20 and received large portions of our entrees (which both came with 2 scoops of rice), miso soup, and salad (which had an AMAZING dressing). Awesome price for good portions. We'll go to this place again for sure and hubby will get some sushi. Next time I want to enjoy the dine in experience with sake and bump them to 5 star!

My favorite sushi joint around! Owners are super nice and always want to make you happy. The sushi is great and fresh! Every meals comes with soup and a salad which is delish! Looks a little sketchy from the outside but it really is a gem in the rough.

Amazing. Easy to see why it is so busy. A sushi bar and Japanese restaurant in one. They excel at everything. The bento boxes are a great deal.

Gave the place another go and unfortunately, was a bit disappointed. I had the Dynamite Roll and the Super Philly Roll. Dynamite was definitely no explosion. Granted, it was full of good things but the taste did not perform. The Super Philly was good. However, I'm very picky about my sushi and this place didn't quite deliver. I will probably try again someday as I only live a mile away.

Food is pretty good, sushi is mediocre. I have had better, but this would not prevent me from going back as their prices are very reasonable and portions are decent. The environment could use some renovating because the appearance of the exterior and interior isn't exactly the most appealing or clean.

Cute family owned establishment with easy access from Mcgloughlin. They serve good food fast and have quality ingredients. My favorite roll is the volcano which by itself could be considered a meal. They also let you order the Lunch Bento well past lunch time and strive to make your visit a great one. I recently went with my kid brother and they gave him extra attention (helped him with his chopsticks and gave him heck to say hello and such) which was great since most places ignore kids entirely. I really like this place and highly recommend it if you're in Milwaukie looking for good Japanese cuisine.

Excellent food, I'd give the quality of the food 8.5/10. Not only is the food delicious, it is very nicely priced. The service tends to be a bit slow but I can't blame them as they are always packed, and the service is very good. The owner walks around and makes sure everyone is happy. Love love love this place and go there all the time. I think this is one of the best Teriyaki/Sushi places in Portland.

I like this place, when they are open.. They clearly state that they are open till 9pm, but they had the Closed sign on the door before 8pm.. Not cool.. However, when they are open, the food is fairly decent and they are one of few sushi restaurants in the area. They remember and are appreciative of return visitors. Saki, but no beer.. I suggest the bento boxes (even for dinner). The nigiri is fairly large, order accordingly! .. Go, enjoy, but have a back-up if its after 8pm..

I have been to Sushi Kata many times because it's my boyfriend's favorite restaurant. Here's why: the prices are very affordable for made-to-order sushi by Japanese chefs. The taste and quality is nice and fresh. The service is pretty good, they always seem to remember us, and we never have to wait long. Every person automatically receives miso soup and a side salad, no matter what they order from the menu, and I happen to like the salad dressing they use. This is nice because most sushi restaurants serve their soups and salads a la carte, and charge you for them. They also have photos on the wall of all the dishes they serve, which comes in handy for those who are not familiar with everything on a Japanese sushi menu. They take a lot of to-go orders, although we always eat in when we go there. It's kind of a hole in the wall located in a somewhat deserted strip mall on Mcloughlin Boulevard. I consider it a hidden gem, our little secret restaurant. Some people may be turned off by the fact that they have old, mismatched furniture. They don't have one nice set of tables and chairs that they use; this is where they skimp. It may not have the best ambiance, but if you just want affordable and fresh sushi, who cares about the furniture? Last time we went we both had sushi bento boxes for lunch for only about $8 each. It came with the requisite miso soup and side salad first, tempura with dipping sauce, a California roll, a few pieces of Nigiri, rice, and of course, wasabi and ginger. We also ordered an Oregon Roll, and I was stuffed! I let my boyfriend have most of the Oregon Roll even though it was really good. One thing I will add is that some of their rolls are really big, way bigger than average, and it's kind of hard to eat them because they don't fit in your mouth in one bite, so they can fall apart. My boyfriend likes this, but I prefer the smaller rolls. Bottom line: go here if you are in the area.

Over-all a good experience. I walked in and ordered to go and they were quick and thorough about it. They included miso and a salad for each diner, which I wasn't expecting. This explains why they asked how many I was ordering for. It ended up being a lot more food than I bargained for. Everything here is big. I feel like they expected my mouth to be twice as big as it is. Even the nigiri is big. That is tolerable (and interesting even), but big rolls are a pet peeve because they're difficult to eat. Sake nigiri was good. Sake sashimi was ok. Spicy tuna roll was nice and spicy, definitely liked. The gyoza was pretty good; nice and crisp because they packaged it well for travle. I was disappointed in the saba nigiri. The fish was good, but the cut made it inedible. I was also disappointed in the hotate gai nigiri, it tasted fishy and not as creamy and luscious as I was expecting. I think we'll be back. Probably get the Sake sashimi and nigiri as well as some rolls.

This is no frills, top quality sushi at very reasonable prices. Don't expect to see the hand of an interior decorator at this place or awards lining the walls for for sushi presentation. This is just your basic mom and pop sushi joint that happens to be really good.

After my friends and I went to the Portland Aquarium, we got cravings for sushi, haha, but it was the time between lunch a dinner so we only wanted something to quench our cravings and we found this place on yelp! This place was great. The prices were decent even though we each ordered just one roll (one person even ordered just a cali roll) they still brought us each a small side salad with, I want to say, Japanese mayo dressing AND miso soup!! My friend, who paid like $4 on the cali, got a great deal. We all got a great deal. the Rainbow roll was only like $7-$8 and we didn't have to add a $1 for miso like most places would when prices are relatively cheap. Also the miso was not the cheap instant version either. It's legit! The service was decent and they topped it all off by giving us a dum dum lolipop before we left. The Japanese guy, which I want to say was the owner, was super cool and friendly. This definitely had a family owned vibe to it and very Japanese. The only downfall is the size of the restaurant and what looked to be like a little bit of disorganization . Seems like all the back office stuff was done at the restaurant instead of the office haha. The food was delicious and we were all able to satisfy our sushi fix for that day.

Another time that Yelp has sadly steered me astray (thankfully it doesn't happen too often). I'm here as the grain of salt in this well reviewed sushi restaurant. The TL;DR version: It's not that great. We went on what turned out to be a busy weekday evening, and after waiting about 15 minutes for a seat (which is not a big deal and doesn't have much to do with the rating) we were seated at the worst seats in the house--we were stuck at the table that sits right up against the condiments table, so for our party of two we had to sit side-by-side (this was a bit awkward) facing the condiments and counter. Honestly, the only weirder spot would have been nestled right between the bathrooms in the back hallway. The selection of sushi seemed good. I ordered a Philly Roll and the Dynamite Roll, and the taste was off on the Dynamite Roll. The Philly Roll (though I never thought I would say this) had too much cream cheese. I know, I know, I feel horrible for even saying it because cream cheese is so delicious but in these amounts it made it a bit gross. I didn't finish my sushi--and I had no desire to take the leftovers home. My husband had a noodle dish with which he fared a little better. I don't think we'll be back though. If you're looking for the real deal sushi-wise, I feel like Syun Izakaya in Hillsboro is the best I've found since moving to PDX--Zenbu is on my shortlist to try though.

Best sushi in the area! Friendly staff, good food and at a reasonable price. Could be bigger and better decorated, but we're about the food!

I love Sushi. I always try new places and gauge their quality on three things: Sunomono, Miso, and Tea. If you can serve up the basics perfectly then I won't hesitate to order anything from the menu. I had a sushi combo in addition to the basics and an order of Tobiko(Yum!) Very good experience but I will have to try them again. A better Sake selection would've warranted 5 stars. But the house is decent

This is a quirky, affordable, and fairly good quality sushi joint in the Oak Grove area. I would much rather have sushi here than wait in line at Saburo's in Sellwood (sushi is good, but not wait-forever-in-the-rain good). Pros: -Reasonably priced menu -Consistent quality -Better than Mio Sushi -Good service -Good house sakes (the unfiltered one is really interesting... get it them warm) Cons: -No tofu in the miso soup -Gross dressing on the salad (tastes like sweetened vomit) -Ambiance is a bit cheesy and flourescenty -It's obvious where they cut corners to keep the menu prices low (skimping on wasabi, ginger, etc.)

Te'emo M.
I love this place. The fish is always yummy! My only complaint is that they have a hard time with custom wishes. For instance i am allergic to ginger (weird i know). I love sushi i just need no ginger on my plate....the last few times that was an issue. They were very nice about it and the food was great, but still...issue. I suggest this place to all sushi lovers!
Great food, good prices, and friendly staff. Don't be fooled by its appearance from the outside.

Wow, forget waiting in lines at Sushi Land or Saburos for so-so service, and all right Sushi, Sushi Kata is delicious! No wait times and the owner is freaking hilarious, had me laughing through out the meal. This is our new favorite Sushi place, thank you Sushi Kata crew!

Huge portions of fish on the sushi- BUT what counts the most is the flavor. The salmon melts in your mouth! This place is a diamond in the rough. The owner is silly and makes my kids laugh. The only downfalls are the salad dressing which is basically vinegar and mayo blended together, and the timing of the food. If we order a sushi deluxe combo and the stir-fry pork terriyaki, unfortunately the terriyaki comes out in 5 minutes and the sushi comes out in 15. So I sit there and wait while my husband eats his dinner so it doesn't get cold. Then by the time I get mine he rushes me since he's already done... Otherwise you get your money's worth and quality is fantastic! Authentic recipes. Soon this place will have to get a bigger store because they are always packed. We go eat here for lunch or dinner about 2-3 times a month.

Been here twice now, lunch once and dinner with the wife. Very good food and very popular, so if you go, be prepared to wait. They are so busy the staff has a hard time keeping up and keeping track of tables, so I would recommend making sure your waiter or waitress is aware you need something if you do. The sushi is good, not the best I have ever had, but certainly better than many, in Milwaukie there are not alot of Sushi choices, so they're king of the mountain here. I am usually not a fan of fried foods, but the Tempura is the best I have ever had and the teriyaki is just the perfect blend of sweet and salty. Prices are dirt cheap, we will be going back often.

Sushi Kata is the best deal around for sushi! It is family owned and operated. The service is great! The food is delicious and fresh! They have the best Spider hand roll in the Portland Metro Area in my opinion. Every order, even if you just order an appetizer comes with Miso soup and a small salad! It is in a hole in the wall strip mall and is and unexpected surprise! They are always busy and do a huge take out service. I highly recommend it!!!

Their spicy chicken bento is wonderful!!! I am not a sushi eater, but a lot of my friends are. I can can get bento and let them eat sushi to their heart's content. I have taken my entire staff here for lunch and one time I took a group of marine biologists from all over the country here...I never saw so much sushi go down at one time! We are always served quickly even when it is busy. I love the fact that local's eat here and we keep the tourists at bay most of the time..

I went here after reading a review from Becky L. who raved about it and I'm always into checking our affordable sushi places. So here's the thing - the nigiri is AWESOME. Big delicious pieces of fish - yummers. The rolls were standard and just OK, and the ambiance is a little weird - definitely a hole in the wall place. This is a great go to for nigiri, I think you can find better rolls elsewhere though (one of my faves is yuki sushi on NW 23rd)

The two of us ordered a dinner (not sure what it was named) and it was about seventeen dollars and than we got a catapillar roll. The dinner was good it came with rice a salad and soup. It was extremely filling that I was unable to finish my catapillar roll. The place is very small, comfortable and the food was good. I wont say it's amazing but it has been my favorite Japanese Restaurant since arriving here. The only thing I am disappointed is was not bringing my camera to take pictures.

Hole in the wall places recommended by fellow Yelpers have rarely failed me in the past but this one definitely did. I'll start with the good - the chicken karaage (fried chicken) was hot and yummy! The negatives: 1) We were not given plates or utensils for our meals until it was requested, and then the little plates were dirty so I had to help myself from the counter because there was only one waiter and he was too busy with other customers. 2) They were out of some of the items that were on the menu. 3) The chicken teriyaki was way too salty. 4) There was a piece of scale on my salmon sushi, and it didn't taste fresh so I couldn't even finish a two-piece sushi (first time ever!) 5) To top it all off, I had food poisoning the next morning!! (which may or may not be attributed to my meal) Have to go against other Yelpers on this place - Would not recommend this place. KPI (Key Performance Indicators) ratings (1-5, 5 - best): Quality: 1 Delivery/Service: 1 Cost: 2

we love this place!!!! we always get the super philly roll. i also like the genki roll. being kinda new to sushi, i am not always which rolls to get but i have liked every roll i have ever had. we come here all the the time. last night i also got some edamame and that was tasty as usual. super fresh sushi, friendly staff and their miso soup is delicious!

For the price, this place is pretty solid. Went in for a late lunch 3pmish on a Wednesday and I ordered 2 rolls ($6.50 and $5.50) it came with a small salad and miso soup. I couldn't finish it all so took a to-go box. Service was extremely friendly and they knew almost everyone that walked in to the place. Wish I had a sushi joint like this in Vancouver... *sigh* I'm a fan, but it's really out of my way! =(

I may have a higher starred skewed perspective of this place because I was drunk when I went there, so I'm taking it down a notch. I am reviewing the sushi here because that's what I ate, but the menu was large and they offered a lot of options. Major plus - the sushi chefs are japanese and many of the staff are japanese as well. The food looks like it would in Japan. The sushi was relatively cheap! However the quality wasn't the best - some pieces were rubbery. I enjoyed the rice - it was seasoned well and slightly warm, which I feel contributes nicely to fish that melts well in your mouth. In the case of the cold, rubbery fish pieces, it didn't meld well and the variety of textures in my mouth weren't the most appealing. Of the regular sushi plate, I was happy with about half of the selections - the salmon, unfortunately, was the most disappointing. I would come here again though if I was in the area! The staff was really great, and the prices were reasonable!

Fresh, big sushi cuts. Yum. The main lady\owner? Is a little wacky kind of sushi Nazi without the meanest. And? And? Is that it? What about you? Etc. Got it in reasonable time during a work lunch. Average prices. I'll be back (with or without Schwarzenegger impression)

The sushi is fresh and wonderful with very large portions. It is better than any sushi place I have gone to and the staff is very friendly. I actually drive all the way to Oak Grove from NE Portland to get sushi from here.

Introduced to this place by a friend and now I can't stop coming back! My wife and I have tried many, many places in Portland and this is by far our favorite. There are more popular places but this is somewhat of a well kept secret. I've only seen it super busy a couple times, so it's pretty much immediate seating and fast service. Portions are large compared to other places and quality is absolutely second to none! Recommend the sushi bento box and if you like sashimi... the mackarel is worth a try.

I have tried all the sushi restaurants in Portland and this is by far the freshest sushi and the best service for the best price. Even if their prices went up, I would still come back. My favorite is the volcano roll and the philly roll. I get it everytime now. The only down side to this place is it's location. It's located in a strip mall off mcgloughlin that looks run down and it's hard to believe a good restaurant would be located in it let alone a good SUSHI restaurant! But it's the best!
(5)
Sam B.
Good prices and good food. Very friendly people there, including the customers. Why am I the first to give it 4 stars then? Green tea isn't typical Japanese green tea and they charge $1 for it- but they do have free refills. Miso (avg) and side salad (so-so) are free, which is nice, but I'd expect better... Sushi nigiri are pretty large, presumably because that's what PDXers think sushi is supposed to be like? I preferred the rolls and am excited to try lunch. Looks great. And reasonable prices, which is a rarity in this town. Kid friendly. Err - infants I mean.

We were jonesin' for a sushi fix while we were hanging with our friends who live down south so they suggested Sushi Kata. When we pulled up I have to say I was a bit taken back..and a bit worried. Surprisingly, the food and service surpassed the outward appearance of the place. Super riendly staff and comfortable japanese mom and pop type sushi bar with excellent prices, quanity, and flavors to back it up. I've visited twice now and have numerous rolls and my new addiction, seaweed salad. I've gotta learn to make that stuff at home! I can't seem to get it right. The miso soup is very good, without being too salty. I'll definately be a repeat customer everytime I'm in the neighborhood. Well done.

Used to live in the area and were regulars. Now that were about a half hour away, we still make it in to sushi kata because the sushi is AMAZING!!! ***Must Order crunch roll, oregon roll, kata roll, and dynamite roll!!! Miso soup and salad are served quickly before your food, & the sushi chefs are very friendly! LOVE!!!

Agreed with previous reviews. This place definitely look like much from the outside, and the inside isn't much too look at either. But let me tell you for one the service is awesome. The sushi is a good quality for the prices. Definitely not a date night spot. But for take out, a weeknight dinner, or lunch spot, I recommend it.

Diamond in the rough describes Sushi Kata. This is our favorite place for sushi, and we go here at least twice a month. You get so much for your money, and each piece of sushi is large and fresh. Each sushi roll and sashimi is so huge! The pricing is perfect because you are paying the same price as other family owned sushi restaurants, yet you get huge pieces of fresh sushi. What more can you ask for? We usually get the Kyoto (3 nigiri, 6 California rolls and 8 sashimi); it is enough to feed two people. Try the calamari, they fry it until it's just yellow enough, but not quite burnt yet. Everyone who works here is very nice and friendly. I think we've frequent here enough for them to recognize us. They can get pretty full for dinner service, so sometimes we order to-go, and can pick it up within 15 minutes. They have three sushi chefs working so everything goes out pretty fast. The couple who owns the place has great customer service. They talk to customers who frequent this place like it's their own family, asking about how other family members are doing, what they are up to these days. It's such a warm atmosphere.

This is my first yelp review... ever. I thought this place was so cool I had to take the time. Its your typical teriyaki place but great value, outstanding service and great positive staff vibe. Best service/staff I've had in a very long time. It was about 30% full when we came in and I watched the place fill up in about 10 minutes... they new the names of every single group that came in and greeted them at the door. When we left there were a few groups waiting (demand tells you something). One table left their take home box and the waiter ran out the door into the lot to make sure they got it. The food was good (not mind blowing) but the service and how much they cared about their customers was outstanding. And 5.95 chicken teriyaki that comes with miso+salad and cookie is pretty nice too. Great joint... amazing staff.

My wife and I have dined here several times. I'm glad I waited to rate the place. At first we really liked it. Had very little issues. Food was good, not great but good enough to come back for more. Then over time we really started having issues with service. One night we sat there right in the middle of the place for at least 45 minutes before they noticed we didn't have our food. What on earth? Was I supposed to say something? Another night a large party came in and was served before us. We had already ordered before they even entered the restaurant. That was upsetting. We've had issues with communication as well. To go orders being wrong. I gave it three stars because while we've had issues the food is good and it's affordable.

I have to say, once again, how much I love Sushi Kata. Stopped in yesterday - a Friday night - and they were pretty busy at about 8pm (they close at 9pm). I phoned in an order so I was just in for pick up. My order of chicken teriyaki bento (Nara) and Volcano Roll was ready when I arrived. It was so good. The bento comes with rice, chicken teriyaki and tempura: 2 pieces of tempura shrimp and 6 pieces of veggies. They actually gave me 4 shrimp - nice surprise. Everything was deelish - not one complaint!

Our favorite place around. The prices are great and the sushi is HUGE. With a friendly staff and "Hole in the wall" atmosphere that can't be beat. On our last late night sushi run they gave us extra miso soup because it was the end of the night and they remembered us. (: don't waste time or money anywhere else.

It started out bad, but I'm over that and had very good meal. It was a cold night, and they only have a single door opening directly into the dinning room area. We were seated directly next to the door, on the other side of a bamboo divider. To be fair they were busy (always a good sign) and it was the only two top left. Large menu with many choices that are not sushi. Sat and looked at the menu for about 5 minutes. I was getting annoyed at the lack of drinks when we decided on our orders and set the menus down. The second we did that, our server appeared. She was very friendly. The hot tea is very light in flavor. The tempura breaded calamari and veggies are both perfectly cooked and delicious. Yakisoba was good, and inexpensive with a large portion. Came with miso and a weird little salad. Geni roll was fresh and also came with miso and salad. All in all a good hole in the wallish Japanese restaurant.

Ordered a spicy tuna hand roll and got a fake crab hand roll. Then they said no this is tuna. It was definitely fake crab. Will not be back.

Huge portions of tasty sushi. Especially nigiri and sashimi. They also feature wonderful selections of teriyaki and stir fry. A hidden gem in a strip mall on 99E.

We ordered a rainbow roll, philly roll and dynamite roll and they were all superb, really fresh and delicious. The service was really slow and the atmosphere isn't great but I will definitely be back for the food!

I'm such an idiot! I've lived around the corner from this place for 12 years, and it's the first time I've eaten their sushi. I remember stopping by for some teriyaki shortly after moving here from Seattle where corner $7 teriyaki joints are as commonplace as Starbucks. At the time I thought the teriyaki was fine but a little pricey and never gave this place another thought. Twelve years wiser, I stopped in for an amazing sushi lunch. I had the regular sushi (I'm not being ignorant; that's the name of their $11 sushi plate) which came with five huge nigiri rolls and a big, fat, red tuna roll, plus their complimentary miso soup and Asian salad. If you're looking for tiny, finely sliced, perfectly coifed morsels of sushi, you're out of luck. If you're looking for big slabs of very fresh fish that are at least 3 bites a piece, you're in luck. And fabulous wasabi too. I've found my new favorite neighborhood joint.

My favorite Sushi place. Very nice owners and staff. I feel welcomed every time I go here. Everything on the menu is wonderful, the salad and soup that comes with every meal is one of my favorite items as well!

Located in the Courtney Plaza on the corner of Milwaukie Blvd. / Courtney Ave. (Look for Baskin Robbins) GOOD Got here just before the rush. Ordered 2 Rainbow Roll's (X 2 $8.50) comes with complimentary miso soup and a salad (soup / salad free) = $17.00 + tip. BAD My order was taken right away but I sat for some time with nothing to drink. No miso to sip or salad to munch. Curious because everyone else had been served and there are 2 servers. 2 sushi Chefs. A prep cook / dishwasher and a manager. Funny how much Sapporo Beer is advertised but they don't serve beer. YUMMY A Rainbow Roll is a California Roll topped with slices of Avocado. Salmon Nigiri. Halibut Nigiri . Shrimp Nigiri and Ahi Tuna Nigiri and is about 8 pieces. All in all it's a good place to eat. The decor is odd and you may have to wait for water but in Milwaukie OR. this is one of the way better places to eat. It's a small place and they do a fair amount of TOGO item's but the sushi was great. The fish tasty and the staff friendly.

Bigger is not always better. Food quality was around a 3.5 while the service and overall atmosphere was a 2.5. Proportion sizes were quite large but taste was clearly lacking. We ordered a kitsune-udon, gyoza, regular sushi platter, and green tea (we asked for the green tea to be served after our meal but it was served to us immediately). The kitsune-udon was by definition NOT kitsune udon as it was not served with aburaage (deep fried tofu) on top of the noodles. An absence of leek also made the udon very bland. Additionally, the noodles were not cooked through. The gyoza faired a little better but were still way too oily (I was expecting Japanese pan fried gyoza to be honest). The house salad and miso soup was a pleasant surprise but turned out to be quite tasteless. The sushi however is what bumps the score up to a 3.5. Large slabs of fish and rice were awesome and very tastey. Unfortunately it came 45 minutes after we ordered which made the spacing out of all our dishes awkward. The place is very affordable so Stick to the sushi and you guys should be ok.

The most friendly customer service I've ever had from a mom and pop sushi restaurant. I ordered the chicken katsu lunch combo and for $7.95, the large bento plate came along with miso soup and a small salad. Affordable AND delicious! This place is a must try if you are every craving for good sushi/overall japanese food in the Mcloughlin road area.

The score for food taste/quality is a 4, whereas the service is a 2 for an average of 3. I've now eaten here 3 times, once in person and twice as take-out. Overall my impressions are this is a nice, smaller capacity strip mall joint that puts out pretty good, not great or mind blowing sushi. That said, there's bunch of both good and bad. Whether folks or noticing it or not, a HUGE part of their business is take-out. From the time their dinner service starts on weekdays and lunch starts on weekends, they get pounded. When I last placed a two-person order, there were easily 4-5 other orders being juggled at the same time. As they only have two sushi chefs, things get backed up, like really backed up. The first time I ordered take-out, it was 60-90 minutes before closing (9pm). I ordered approximately 6 rolls and given a 40 minute wait time. :-/ I arrived a couple minutes early and was asked to wait an additional 30 minutes. By the time I left, they'd turned out their "Open" sign and were sorting out customers change. I got home peeved. The next time I ordered take-out was about two weeks ago, at the beginning of the lunch service on a Saturday. I waited to call for literally the minute they opened. Our order was a lunch Bento sushi box and two additional rolls. I was given a 20 minute wait time. I arrived on-time and was asked to wait an additional 5-10. I left, walked over to the charity discount store at the end of the row, browsed second-hand motel furniture and came back. It still took an additional 5, so my additional wait turned out to be as long as my original. Doubly peeved. My wife, Munchin and I decided to eat-in and it answered a lot of questions. The waitstaff were extraordinarily kind, attentive, quick-to-help and absolutely gracious to my toddler's new-found interest in chop sticks. From what I saw in-person, the chefs are prioritizing restaurant customers over take-out completion, which makes sense. The waitress assembling orders is double-checking bags of food, setting them up w/ servings of miso soup and salad for all takers. It was nice to see how much care went into that aspect of their operation. GOOD: Their waitstaff are wonderful, like easily wanting to tip as much as the bill. Quick to help, joke, smile, play with my kid and agreeable on seating her where it was clearly a bit in the way. Their food is good. Everything tastes fresh, well prepared and large-portioned. You're definitely getting your money's worth. BAD: Their turnaround and wait times for take-out are completely off base! They should be doubling what they're telling folks. I've spent as much, if not more time waiting for my order in the restaurant as I was told it'd be ready for pickup to begin with. I'm told ready in 20. I show up in 15 and wait an extra 20-25 before I walk out, wishing I'd brought a snack to eat waiting for my food to show up. I actually brought a book to my second order, as a joke just to ward off slow juju. I'm fine that the food takes 30-60 minutes. Totally cool. Just tell me, "45 minutes" and have that actually mean "45 minutes", not 60+. I live, like two blocks away from this place and I desperately want to order here all the time! Until they are able to master best guessing, I'm only going to eat in-person before the dinner rush.

Went for the reviews but yikes, this place is a dirty dive with a very strange owner lurking around and making uncomfortable comments. Food quality is pretty low and the vibe is just weird and the atmosphere, dingy.

The Genki Roll is alright, but the rest.... Like many Korean-owned sushi restaurants, this place is fully equipped with a Christian radio station and a strange feeling atmosphere. There's a guy who works here in particular who my friends and I call "the sushi nazi" (reference to Seinfeld's "Soup Nazi" character) who seems to own the place, and he is a displeasure to have around. He has chastised my friends for not being able to use chopsticks properly, and wouldn't leave them alone until they let him put this little contraption on their chopsticks to make it easier for them, despite their refusals. Who does that?! My friends promptly removed the contraptions after he had left our table. They bleach their miso bowls to clean them, and you can smell it on the bowls if you give them a sniff. The vegetables they use in their dishes are the frozen kind you get in bags (i.e., Safeway Stir Fry frozen vegetables). As for the sushi and fish, it is not good quality, not very fresh. The rolls are poorly put together, and the same goes for the nigiri. I always leave this place with a bad taste in my mouth. If you order gyoza you can expect it will be overcooked and you don't even get to make your own dipping sauce -- it's some premade sauce they have that I don't detect any chili oil in whatsoever. Don't even get me started on their agedashi tofu... yikes. The broth is served separately! The only thing I can say is good about this place is their Genki Roll. And that's just not good enough. Great place for Americans who don't know any better, because to them, huge rolls + cheap prices = great restaurant. But for those of discerning taste.. look elsewhere.

Always good always friendly always reliable. Food is good, fast and inexpensive. We are regulars for about 9 years now. We go about once a week as a family. the food was ok. tempura udon and they gave me the soup, but took a long time for the tempura. I finished my soup by the time they brought the tempura out. sushi was lumpy, not really in one piece, hard to pick up and fell apart everytime. sweet shrimp was delicious, but again a lot more rice than needed. also noticed that its korean owned, not japanese, that explains the lumpiness. looks like they need more servers, it took such a long time to get my food.

okay, here goes. i downloaded the yelp app just to post this i feel so strongly about the disturbing thing i saw at our beloved sushi kata :( the sushi man blew his nose, even shoving the tissue up in his nostrils with his fingers, then sat the tissue down on the cutting board and continued making customers orders!!! clearly, somebody hates his job. needless to say, we won't be returning:( rip sushi kata!! it was fun while it lasted.

Just ate here for the first time today and loved it! Really reasonable lunch prices. The tempura was perfect, not soggy, and perfectly breaded. My friend and I both got the salmon bento for $6.95, which included a small salad, miso soup (fabulous), vegetable tempura, rice, and salmon, several pieces of California roll and two gyoza. Everything tasted wonderful; I couldn't even finish it all. Very friendly place. I felt like I was back home in Hawai'i again and won't hesitate to go back again. IFrom the outside it looks like a hole in the wall place located in a strip mall; but don't let that keep you from going in. It's not a huge place, but it's friendly and comfortable and very clean. Highly recommended.

This is a very delicious and affordable sushi place! I love getting the assorted sashimi here, and it's less than $15 and you get like 28 pieces. Something like that. Really friendly staff and great sides!

My family and I have been coming here for the last few years and their standards have never fallen. The food is great, the atmosphere is homey and the chefs are very friendly. Very deceiving little place. In a good way though. I found it here on Yelp while in Portland on business. Saw all the great reviews, and figured I'd try it out. When I got there I accidentally passed it. So I turned around in a parking lot that upon a second look I realized was the parking lot for a strip club. As I pulled out I just at a glance saw three other strip clubs. I have no problem with these clubs, love to go to them now and again, just giving you an idea about the area Sushi Kata is in. This place was worth the search. Not a overwhelming wow factor as far as the food quality goes. It was good, but on par with similar establishments. Where they earned their 4th star was quantity. I have NEVER walked out of a sushi bar that full for that little. I had the Agedashi Tofu appetizer, and the Deluxe Sushi plate. I got stuffed full for $18 plus a tip. To say that the slices of sushi were twice as large as most sushi places would be selling them short. My wife and I usually have sushi on a night when we're not that hungry. But don't be afraid to bring a big hungry appetite to Sushi Kata. PS: While you're there be sure to tell the lady (either the owner or owner's wife) to calm down, and that it'll be ok. She runs around the restaurant with a worried pace equivalent to someone about to miss a non-refundable flight.

Just had a great dinner here this evening, and the reviews are pretty well on. The staff is extremely friendly, and the prices are VERY reasonable for what you get. I'm definitely not a sushi snob, but the pieces of fish in the nigiri were awkwardly large, but that's just more fish for me! Definitely will go back.

LOVE this place - we come here regularly since we live in the area, and have never been disappointed. They always remember us and are very friendly. Service is always fast and the quality of fish is as good or better than places like Yakuza or MasuSushi, but with better prices - and portion sizes are bigger. You're not paying for the location or the decor here, that's for sure, so if you're looking for high-end atmosphere you may not be happy - as far as that goes, it's very basic (but clean, which is important!).

This is my second time at this place and I have to tell you it's very good! This place is nice and clean the service is good and the quality of the food was fresh!!! When you order you will have to ask for a fork for those of you who don't know how to use chop sticks. Before your order arrives you will get a small bowl of broth with a hint of fresh green onions and a small Iceberg lettuce with a few Julianne carrots and very lite cream sauce. Then comes your order, so far I have ordered Gyoza a 5 pcs. potstickers crispy and tender, Volcano roll ,spicy tuna, crab, cream cheese, cucumber & avocado, also crispy and soft, with a bit of spiciness!, Dancing EEL roll, this was really good!!! It was a California roll with eel on top! I also had the Beef short ribs grilled just right and very tender with the right sweetness. I do recommend this place I hear it gets very busy for lunch. Thank you Sushi Kata Japanese Restaurant I will be back to try more of your menu!

I have been here many times and continue to go back especially since they have amazing sushi and are actually open during the day. Great prices & beautiful rolls! I had my first Vegas Roll here and fell passionately in love with the place. Also wonderful are the Volcano, Spider & Dragon Rolls. Absolutely wonderful, I could eat here every day!

This is my go-to sushi place. Not only is it in my hood, but the food is fantastic and the staff is outstanding! I usually get takeout, but on the rare occasion I dine in I am met with friendly service. The food is cheap and yummy. I'm a big fan of the karaage and the salmon butter yaki is delicious. The only problem is that I order way too much, as the rolls are gigantic. The crunch roll is my favorite.

(4)R S.
(3)Amy L.
(4)Gosh P.
(4)Ashley H.
Always fresh, always good. Portions are big and in line with the price. We get take out a lot and the only downside is that they use styrofoam.
(5)Amanda I.
Great service and reasonable prices. The sushi rolls are huge and delicious, I can normally down 4 rolls on my own, but here I was full after one and a half. Highly recommended, and will certainly come back.
(5)Brad R.
One of the best sushi values you will find. Two of us went.....what would normally be 90 bucks was only 40. The quality of the fish was second to none. We had sashimi, sushi and rolls. All of them were great. Small little hole in the wall place with great service and even better sushi.
(5)Evelyn S.
still love this place!!! my favorite place to dine on sushi!!! My 3 & 6 year old love it too!!!
(5)Eddie T.

Two thumbs up
(5)Kendle C.
The price was great as well as the soup and salad. I prefer my Sushi to fit inside my mouth in one bite rather than 3. The flavor was alright. Id perfer to go to a sushi track, more options.
(2)Tiffany H.

Great little mom & pop style sushi. Doesn't look like much on the outside, but the food is tasty and not pretentious at all.
(4)Pui S.
I was hoping that no one will like this place so I don't be worried about waiting in line. Well it's pretty awesome. :)
(5)Anol R.
My favorite sushi joint around! Owners are super nice and always want to make you happy. The sushi is great and fresh! Every meals comes with soup and a salad which is delish! Looks a little sketchy from the outside but it really is a gem in the rough.
(5)G S.
Amazing. Easy to see why it is so busy. A sushi bar and Japanese restaurant in one. They excel at everything. The bento boxes are a great deal.
(5)Chad P.
(3)Taylor S.

(5)Ahsan A.
(4)Casey S.

(4)April B.

(2)L A.
Best sushi in the area! Friendly staff, good food and at a reasonable price. Could be bigger and better decorated, but we're about the food!
(4)John S.
(4)Rich P.
(4)Te'emo M.
(4)Katelyn H.
Sushi Kata is my absolute favorite Japanese restaurant! I go there all the time and I've never had a bad experience. The teriyaki chicken tastes like it's been marinating for days or even weeks because it comes out so juicy it is almost unbelievable, and the crispy outsides are perfect. As for the sushi, their salmon cuts are beautiful and they come draped over the rice like a warm blanket, like it's tucked it into a cozy little bed, ready for sleepy time in my tummy. The service is so very welcoming. They are friendly, funny, and will make suggestions if you are unsure. There was a time where I hadn't made it into the restaurant for at least six months, and when I came back one of the women commented on how I had changed my hair. I couldn't believe she had remembered me. It felt like coming home from college and having your mom offer to do your laundry... while pouring you a shot of warm, delicious nigori saké.

Great food, good prices, and friendly staff. Don't be fooled by its appearance from the outside.
(4)Aaron B.
(5)Julia B.
(4)Tim M.
(4)Dana C.
(5)Kris E.
Great sushi! Big portions! Good quality! Funny people the guy brought the check to me like a robot haha
(5)Holly D.
(5)Alyssa C.
(4)L J.
(4)Dorene S.
(1)Mandi T.
we love this place!!!! we always get the super philly roll. i also like the genki roll. being kinda new to sushi, i am not always which rolls to get but i have liked every roll i have ever had. we come here all the the time. last night i also got some edamame and that was tasty as usual. super fresh sushi, friendly staff and their miso soup is delicious!
(5)Windy S.
(4)S. G.
We love this restaurant! The sushi is great, and the portions are large. The staff is friendly and accommodating! This is probably our favorite restaurant in the whole neighborhood.
(5)Anuj K.
(3)Esteban J.
Generous portions, people are friendly. Highly recommend it. The prices were right. I usually go there every weekend with my gf who is obsessed with their food
(5)Laila S.
Fresh, big sushi cuts. Yum. The main lady\owner? Is a little wacky kind of sushi Nazi without the meanest. And? And? Is that it? What about you? Etc. Got it in reasonable time during a work lunch. Average prices. I'll be back (with or without Schwarzenegger impression)
(4)Stormy S.
The sushi is fresh and wonderful with very large portions. It is better than any sushi place I have gone to and the staff is very friendly. I actually drive all the way to Oak Grove from NE Portland to get sushi from here.
(5)Nicholas Q.
(5)Craig M.
Good cuts. Friendly staff. They've been around for a number of years and have good clientele.
(4)Don W.
Good quality food and good service and the prices are pretty good too. I would recommend this place to anyone.Make sure to ask for a fork even if you don't want one just to see what the waiter says.
(4)Trey D.
my favorite sushi place in Portland metro , excellent service delish food very inexpensive nice owners etc.
(5)Dot L.
(5)Sam B.
(4)Fadi S.
I love this place! Even though it is somewhat small, I love the atmosphere there! The sushi is amazing and the bento is delicious. The staff is very friendly too. Their prices are as good as the food there! I recommend this place to anyone who loves authentic Japanese dishes!
(5)Andrea L.
We really don't go here often enough. Sushi Kata has great service and even better sushi! It's small and can get crowded but the food is worth whatever wait you have in front of you.
(5)Shovelle S.
Well done.
(4)Kelly F.
LOVE!!!
(5)Eric G.
(5)Huong T.
(5)K C.
(5)Josh H.
(3)Debbie P.
(5)Jade S.
(5)Anthony N.
(4)Paul K.
Ordered a spicy tuna hand roll and got a fake crab hand roll. Then they said no this is tuna. It was definitely fake crab. Will not be back.
(1)Peter S.
Huge portions of tasty sushi. Especially nigiri and sashimi. They also feature wonderful selections of teriyaki and stir fry. A hidden gem in a strip mall on 99E.
(4)Coral S.
We ordered a rainbow roll, philly roll and dynamite roll and they were all superb, really fresh and delicious. The service was really slow and the atmosphere isn't great but I will definitely be back for the food!
(4)Brittney S.
Fresh sushi made right in front of you. Waitstaff deserves to be mentioned they are very attentive and work their butts off. Service is very fast and food is delicious.
(5)Jim G.
The sushi is fresh and well prepared, the staff is pleasant, a great eating experience.
(5)Alisa G.

Family run. Friendly and accommodating staff, clean facilities, very very generous portions at a great price. Gets pretty busy so you know it's good. I'll be coming back when I have the sushi craving!!

Favorite new spot! great Japanese food generous portions. Closed on Sunday, no big deal for me. My favorite Udon in se pdx area so far!

Best sushi around! You couldn't tell from the outside, but this place is fabulous. It's not some mainstream, tacky sushi joint. Family run and owned and very friendly and welcoming.

When our son is home from college this is the first place he wants to go. When our son who lives in Norway is home this is the restaurant he wants to go. Yum Yum! : )

The servers are super nice especially the young Korean one, she was sweet to us and even gave me something on my birthday. The food is great. A must try

the food was ok. tempura udon and they gave me the soup, but took a long time for the tempura.

Not a bad little sushi joint. Not the absolute best I've ever had but I enjoyed it. Everything tasted good and the service was prompt. I'd come back here again.

This place packs out... That's a good sign and it means there are lots of folks who have found this great place. Extremely friendly place. We love it.

My family and I have been coming here for the last few years and their standards have never fallen. The food is great, the atmosphere is homey and the chefs are very friendly. We have introduced this place to many people and have not heard one complaint. Don't let the outside fool you. A must try for sushi lovers!

Don't let the run-down strip mall bug you, this place has great sushi, friendly staff and cheap prices.

(4)Rodd S.
A nice surprise in the area. I left full and excited to go back. Portions are good sized and delicious. Service was great and friendly.
(5)Jennifer S.

We were pleased with the quality and quantity given the moderate price. Service was friendly too. We'll go back next time we're in Milwaukee.
