It was 2 pm, on a Sunday. Most sushi places were either closed or opening later. The craving for sushi was great. This place was open since noon, and had good reviews so we decided to head there. It was pretty busy but we were seated right away. I kind of didn't like how the tables were so close to each other, meaning no privacy. We ordered the volcano and jalapeño popper rolls and cucumber salad. Everything came after a short wait and looked delicious! The portions were a little small- at other places you would get more for a $10 roll. Everything tastes yummy and fresh, so overall I enjoyed this place and will be returning to try more items on the menu!

Visiting from LA and wanted to check out how Portland does sushi. Ordered spicy tuna roll, akira roll, and volcano roll...there was too much cucumber to taste the spicy tuna and the shallots were too strong in the akira roll. It's okay, but not worth that price IMHO compared to LA
(3)Tommy K.
Nice food and sake here, special sushi call " Tokyo towel" real good for us Chinese people to having nice food in Portland.
(5)Dylan B.
Great hipster sushi spot. The Sube Ball is a remarkable feat of avocado-based engineering that will force you to abandon your chop sticks.
(5)Anastasiya B.
The best sushi place in Portland that I've been at. Love the ambiance, great music, and amazing drinks. They have a great selection of sakes. For sushi I would recommend the "beautiful roll", the smoked salmon on that thing was perfecto! They have an upstairs balcony that I thought was pretty cool. Will def be coming back!
(5)Michael G.
The staff here is so friendly and everyone greets you as you walk in the door. The food is awesome and drinks even better!

We went to SuBe for a last dinner in Portland before heading to the airport. We had a bunch of things to do during our last day in Portland, but ended up finishing early and decided to have a super early dinner, i.e. 3:30pm. I was hoping to order off the happy hour menu, which starts at 4pm, but they were pretty inflexible about that request, even though we were only 30 minutes away. When we sat down, the restaurant was half empty, but it filled up very quick and they had to turn at least 3-4 tables away while we ate. The restaurant has the enviable position of being right next to the extremely popular Voodoo Doughnuts, and I have a feeling that a number of people came in because they were starving after waiting in line for more than an hour for those doughnuts. Unfortunately, the plan ran out of SuBe Ball, which is an item that most reviewers recommended. Instead we ordered the following dishes: Tokyo Tower - this was a huge dish, with nearly equal ratio of rice vs. toppings, which consisted of tuna, crab salad, avocado and egg. The sauces that accompanied the dish were so good, and went so well with the sushi rice. Magic Mushroom - seriously do not understand why people love this dish, I guess if you are a vegetarian, this is a nice option for you. I thought the mushroom was too sweet and they could've made the roll with more filling Volcano - I only got the roll because it was torched and I have been obsessed with the technique of torching sushi rolls during this trip. I couldn't really tell the roll was torched, but I loved the crunchy spicy scallop topping. The filling was a bit small though. Crazy Spice Roll - another good roll, loved the tobiko and spicy aioli topping. This place is similar to Umi Sake House in Seattle, i.e. they have great inventive rolls, but I am not quiet sure about the quality of the seafood on its own. It is quiet easy to hide mediocre seafood with tons of sauce, but I don't mind if the end result is delicious, as long as the fish has not gone bad. It all depends on what you are looking for. I personally don't think this is a high-end amazing sushi bar, but I really like their fun/yummy rolls.

All around a great place for sushi. I was hesitant when we walked in as we were the only customers. (I don't recall the time but it may have been 4pm or something odd. Once inside we sat at the bar. The owner or host was very nice and chatted with us for almost the entire time other than when we were eating. As we were not familiar with the place, it was very appreciated to feel welcome. The sushi was great and the chopsticks are the best I have ever used. The wood where you grip was twisted and the only way I can describe it is ergonomic chopsticks. Great presentation and the cucumber water was excellent. I will be back for another great meal.
(5)Kristin J.
I wish this place was open for lunch (although they are on Fridays)! The sushi is fantastic, the service amazing, and happy hour is great! I had been eyeing this place for a while, just a block away from Big Pink and mere inches from VooDoo, it's in a great location. After a long day I needed some sushi! I ordered a Philly Roll and Spicy Tuna, both were absolutely perfect.
(5)Dean D.
Excellent Sushi; great service and reasonable prices...what more can you ask for...oh, I know 15% off their Specialty Sushi like the Tokyo Tower or the Sube Ball...just check in and activate your Yelp coupon.
(4)Jone V.
Definitely a sushi bar I will return to here in PDX. The owner is very personable and on a constant watch for customers, partially due to its location next to Voodoo Doughnuts. As a single woman hanging out, that is nice. The rolls I ordered off the happy hour menu had a great fish v. rice ratio, one that allowed you to taste the actual fish. And I do so like to actually be able to taste the main ingredients; however, as I did not try any fancy roll, I will be back to try (and judge ;0) those. One thing: Of my salmon roll, the fish itself was totally at room temperature, which I want to eat again to see if that is their standard--way better than too cold, like at some of these other places.
(4)Brandon N.
I like to think of myself as a sushi connoisseur that has tried every roll known to man. Sube sushi has some unique treats that I'm surprised no one has thought of. Try their signature sushi, the Sube Ball and the Tokoyo Tower. Genius concepts. These are not your average sushi "Rolls". Sube Ball - rice, crab, spicy tuna, tobiko, unagi, spicy sauce in an avocado sushi ball. (Yes this is a giant ball of avocado stuffed with deliciousness) Tokyo Tower - ginger-sesame tuna, togarashi spiced crab, avocado, tamago egg, sushi rice, topped with wasabi infused tobiko, crunches, spicy unagi sauce and spicy aioli. (Again, yes this is a GIANT tower of deliciousness)
(5)Laura L.
Excellent sushi and excellent selection. Highly recommend The service was very nice and friendly. I tried a vegetarian coconut and tofu roll, a mango veggie roll, and the Found Nemo roll. Everything was outstanding. Fresh flavors, great atmosphere, and quick service.
(5)Claudine M.
Sube sushi was just the pick me up I needed when I was craving sushi on the way to Voodoo donuts! It was a Sunday afternoon when my friend and I happened upon this place during our vacation in Portland. I loved the atmosphere of the restaurant! The waiter was really friendly, attentive and helpful. They made my friend I aware of the happy hour going on at that time of the day and I was pleasantly surprised that their happy hour is daily! I will definitely recommend this place to out of towners like myself.
(5)Annie S.
Went for happy hour and the waitress and host were really nice. We were able to order immediately. The decor is nice and updated definitely more trendy than your average sushi train place. Even the happy hour sushi was amazing and came with huge portions. The drinks were good also and the service was fast.... But I definitely ate more sushi here than I have ever and will definitely be back.
(5)Tracy D.
We reserved a table and arrived - quickly seated (to a table with a "reserved" sign, nice!). Fast service, knowledgeable staff. The Tokyo Tower was fantastic, as was the Nigiri. My dining mates were also very happy with their dishes. This place is right by VooDoo Donuts and the excellent Kit Kat Club (strip club). Great location near Burnside, intimately small restaurant with a nice menu. I'll definitely be back.
(4)Kathleen C.
Came here on Sunday afternoon because I was just looking for a place playing the Seahawks game. This isn't a sports bar, but at least its not super crowded and there are two decently sized TVs playing the game (no sound, not a sports bar). It was pretty quiet, all day happy hour although hh menu wasn't amazing. The people working there were also very pleasant/friendly. Food: Didn't order from the hh menu. Snacked on some poke, the Volcano roll, edamame, and miso soup. Perfect game day food right? lol. Whatevs. I had a really hefty breakfast and was not trying to eat more greasy food. Overall, everything was better than expected. If I lived in Portland, I would totally return. Price: I felt like things were on the cheaper side. The 8 piece specialty roll we got was around $10 - could've easily been a few dollars more at Seattle sushi bars.
(4)Teresa N.
It's not the best sushi I've had, but it was still good! The portions are smaller than other places. Great customer service!
(4)Shauna F.
Came in on a Sunday afternoon and was seated right away. Friendly service and was constantly checked on. Ordered seaweed salad, Tokyo tower, volcano roll, ring of fire roll, and electric banana roll. The Tokyo tower was a huge mound of sushi goodness. .. very creatively done. My favorite was the electric banana. ..a roll with eel and caramelized banana. .. so yummy! Would def go back
(5)Athena L.
Side note, I need to remember to check into these places! :( Anyways, it was meh. I ordered take out and it wasn't all that great. I was craving for specialty rolls so I got the Jammin' Roll and volcano roll. The Jammin' roll was ok... It had crab, tuna, mango, and a "wasabi aioli". Crab was your usual imitation crab. It had a big chunk of mango in it which gave an exotic sweet taste. And then there was the wasabi aioli... if you even call it that. The sauce they put on top tasted like straight mayo. I scraped all of it off. The Volcano Roll is what I ordered. It's supposed to have tuna, salmon, avocado with spicy scallops-- CRUNCHY. Ok, mine was all of this except crunchy. Where's the crunch part, yo? What REALLY pissed me off was the fact that when I got home, my sushi was ALL squished together! Like in one pile/ball of sushi and it definitely wasn't me because I carried it VERY carefully all the way home... Anyways, I'll probably come back as a sit down dinner to try their sashimi or during happy hour...
(2)Juliet D.
My favorite place for sushi in portland. It's fresh, deli ships, beautiful presentation, awesome drink selection and cocktails, and perfect price point. They also have a lot of fun off menu items! We took the kids and they loved it. The owner let the little one change the color of the lights. Super fun, and yummy I want to be here every week.
(5)Ed F.
Haiku format of review. Is fresh and tasty. Friendly and clean you will find. Sunday shopping trip. great location and service and food.
(5)Sarah P.
Really good sushi. You get a lot for what you pay for. Excellent customer service, good vibes.
(4)Tyler G.
We ate here because it was close to our hotel and had some good reviews on yelp. To our wonderful surprise, THIS WAS THE BEST SUSHI BAR WE'VE EVER EATEN AT! The staff were very friendly and considerate. The music and atmosphere were fun. We ordered the chef's choice and received a very nice assortment of sashimi, nigiri, and a roll. This was enough food for the two of us. The fish was fresh and delicious. I recommend anyone who likes sushi to check this place out!
(5)Erik G.
I'm so happy to have stumbled across this place!! We ordered the Omakase (chef's choice) that included nigiri, sushi, and a roll. The fish was superb and presentation was elegant! Waiter was super nice and attentive. Atmosphere was modern and sophisticated, and they played nice mellow house music. I can't stress how delicious every single bite was, even fish I wouldn't normally order. Their cocktails looked delicious and inspired, even though I didn't actually order any. They also have some really interesting menu items that you won't find anywhere else.
(5)Lynn F.
Came in today for an early lunch. Had the Spicy Edimame, Volcano and Electric Banana Rolls. Everything was so good. The place is trendy and fun with excellent service.
(5)Lionel B.
Being from Hawaii and with having eaten sushi and fresh fish my entire life.... This place is the closest to fresh fish and served in the best fashion. Strongly recommend this spot for a beer/sake and some sushi. Cheers to the owner! Aloha!
(5)Sara K.
One of the few nice restaurants in Old Town and an awesome place to have a beautiful healthy dinner and a bottle of Sake before hitting the nearby nightlife. Owner, Azim is extremely gracious and attentive and can often be found behind the bar mixing any of their delicious cocktails. Pro-tip: Sube has one of the best mules in town and a fantastic all day happy hour on Sundays. Great, elegant space with the occasional dj spinning. Also love the upstairs alcove with its own bathroom that can be rented for private soirees. As for the food- check out the Sube Ball and Tokyo Tower, beautiful and delicious pieces of sushi art.
(5)Debbie P.
This place is right by voodoo donuts so there is certainly some good people watching here. The menu had a nice selection of options and some more unique combinations in their rolls than I've seen many places. We ordered the jammin, the coco's nest, the beautiful, and the rip city. They were all incredibly good! The jammin was a little different with mango in it and the coco is wrapped in cucumber instead of rice- both of which I liked- ALOT. Our favorite was the rip city. I did feel like their sashami was slightly overpriced in comparison to other places and the drink I ordered was good but not strong and not really worth $10. Overall really really good! I would certainly go back.
(4)Aaron B.
Specialty roles are great. Staff made the experience. Super attentive and pleasant. And happy hour until 7! Will come again.
(4)Diem M.
We tried a bit of everything. Our large group came in around 10 pm well lubricated, ordered the seaweed salad, scallops, salmon, Tokyo tower, ring of fire, the electric banana, and some others. We shared a round of drinks, service was great and laid back. Will definitely come back here again with friends.
(4)Brandon S.
Really great sushi. Attentive and helpful staff. I keep thinking I'm full and end up ordering one more thing just because it's s good. Jalapeño Poppers and the bonsai roll are
(5)Penny H.
One word comes to mind: AMAZING! The SuBe Ball is a must!! The Tokyo tower was to die for. We had to order two!! Miso soup was so rich and flavorful. We kept ordering more for our family. Also one of the cleanest restaurants ever!! It is a must to come here. Wish it would move back to California with us!
(5)Marissa K.
My first time trying sushi. Our server was very attentive, and the chef even came to our table to recommend a special to us. The cucumber-wrapped sushi I tried with mango was amazing. Loved the 4-7PM happy hour. Relaxed environment, would absolutely recommend!
(5)Alexandria C.
Absolutely delicious. Great options for fish eaters and vegetarians. Everything is incredibly fresh, delicious and beautifully presented. The atmosphere is modern, and the staff is friendly and prompt.
(5)J B.
You'll almost miss it in this crowded block next to Voodoo Donuts. Ironically, the block it sits on is packed with drinking establishments, yet the drinks were my biggest complaint here. The Cadillac margarita was hardly a Cadillac or a margarita. Served in a short glass with a ton of ice and more than an inch from the top - it was essentially a shot of alcohol and a shot of mixer (and not good mixer either). The saketini tasted better at least, but had the same issue - far from being a full glass. This sort of practice leaves you with a bad feeling...like the owner is trying to skimp on product, but charge the same amount of money. The food was a mixed bag. I love ahi poke (and I mean LOVE it), but what we got was a pile of avacado and cucumbers topped with a little fish that in no way resembled quality ahi. It actually looked like some other fish that had been colored pink to make you think it was ahi. Could be a sourcing issue, but I wouldn't serve that if it were my choice. The sushi rolls were pretty good, but when I asked the waitress for a fork or spoon to break up the ball-o-sushi we ordered, she said, "most people just stab at it, but ok." Fork please and hold the attitude. Apparently I'm not "most people" and I asked nicely for a utensil. I was put off by her commentary. In fact, the staff tried to be nice, but there was an odd vibe to the whole place - not the warm buzzing place I had anticipated. Instead, it was cold and forced friendliness. Similar to the cold air that kept permeating the restaurant as careless patrons would leave the front door open. None of the staff were responsive, so my date and i each closed the door a few times ourselves. Mediocrity with one thing or another is completely forgivable, but the overall experience left a lot to be desired.
(2)Preston S.
Really nice, clean feeling interior. Service was excellent and friendly. Quality of ingredients in sushi was superb. I was also impressed by the presentation. Their menu covers all the basics plus some fun twists and original items. I would absolutely come here again!
(4)Meeko P.
This place is going to be hot when people found out about this somewhat newly opened Sushi Bar. I had some tasty innovative delicious sushi here at Sube Sushi. Some the Specialty rolls that I tried and enjoy, where the SuBe Ball, Electric Banana, (yes eel, and caramelized banana work well for me),and Kummamoto Jo. I also had some fresh uni(not on the menu)that I enjoyed immensely. One other neat finds under their specialty Sake was the Tsnkasbotan Yammayuzu Shibori Sake, a Sake based yuzu infused Liqueur, kind of like a Japanese version of the Italian Limoncello. The service was very nice and welcoming and they had Jiro Dreams of Sushi, a documentary of the great Sushi chef Jiro of Japan playing on the TVs while eating there wonderful Sushi. Another plus is that they are open late on weekends. Will defiantly be back the next time I'm in PDX.
(5)Adolph W.
Some of the best sushi I have had! The service is great. The manager even brought me an iPhone charger to use when I told him my phone went dead.
(5)Erika L.
Sushi was delicious and hit the spot! Definitely get The Ring of Fire & Tokyo Tower.
(5)Corey W.
Great bar service and amazing food. Very nice environment great for a first date or a snack with friends.
(5)Dave S.
I've had a lot of sushi and sometimes get bored with it. The sube ball and tokyo tower were interesting and tasty enough, though-- Enough to make me feel happy even though it was $10-12 ish each.
(5)Eryka S.
Do you know that feeling when you wish you could eat more and more because everything is so good but you can't? Ok, this is just me then and I found this feeling here, at this place. I really wanted much more than I got, but couldn't. My server Cassandra was a doll. Amazing, cute, friendly woman. And the food was very tasty, well proportioned and looked as did taste. If I was from here, I would be a regular.
(5)Hien T.
Got such high reviews I had to check it out. Unfortunately it was just ok. The Tokyo tower would have been great but so much rice killed it. The rolls were not bad but not great. I ordered the popular rolls recommended, might have been an off day for me since everyone else rated it so high.
(3)Gabie L.
Services are very slow and food is not good. Probably won't come back again because of no desire or reason to come back. Someone recommended to have tokyo tower so we ordered tokyo tower and rip city roll. Sushi rice doesn't taste like sushi rice and fish isn't fresh enough. Tokyo tower is quite unique but it's too unique to like; it basically puts tuna, avocado, and tamago on rice.
(2)Marshall L.
Very nice small sushi restaurant .. Very nice presentation !!! Price is worth it. Being from hawaii and traveled to Japan .. Thumbs up Ono sushi
(5)Michael W.
Excellent cuts of fish! The fish to rice ratio on the nigiri is excellent, favoring the fish. The fish, yellowtail, salmon, and sea scallop in this case, were all very fresh and the taste was great! The server is very attentive without hovering and the place just feels very welcoming. I highly recommend it. Do try the sea scallop!
(5)Brad B.
We had a great lunch of sushi and sashimi. All were excellent with the Rip City roll a stand out. Fun watching the people waiting in line for a Voo Doo donut.
(5)Ryan W.
The atmosphere was poppy, laid back, some what upscale but not posh. I had the spicy tuna rolls, California rolls, some jalapeño popper rolls, and some electric eel and banana rolls. It was super delicious, everything was very prompt, the water had cucumber in it which made me feel fancy. It was moderately priced, this is also close to where I live, the service was friendly, well informed of their items, and had a great cocktail menu.
(5)Luke B.
Walked in on a Wednesday night and was greeted immediately by the bartender who was dressed nicely in a collared shirt and tie. The place has great ambiance, great music and the sushi is amazing! The presentation and flavor is second to none at the price point they offer it for. I will definitely be making this a usual stop during the week!
(5)Sarah F.
Came by for lunch, had the ring of fire roll (amazing), jammin roll (pretty damn good), Tokyo tower (feat of engineering), and the crazy spice roll (my favorite). The service was on point, the sake was hot and the lucky Buddha beers were ice cold. Highly Recommend this spot, and it's proximity to voodoo doughnuts doesn't hurt either.
(5)DV P.
The specialty rolls (Ring of Fire, Magic Mushroom & Found Nemo) we tried were delicious, and the negiri pieces were also of good quality. Prices were reasonable. Service was languid, so budget plenty of time for dinner. They do have dog-friendly outdoor seating, but be aware that the panhandlers in the area do not have any qualms about interrupting diners for money while they are eating.
(4)Jack G.
I work in the neighborhood and I love coming to Sube! I recommend coming in on Sunday's for the all day happy hour, it's the best sushi deal in town besides sushi land (blech) and they have $10 bottles of champagne! They have a hip and trendy atmosphere with lots of young people. Give Sube a try! Patric Gray, local chef
(5)Katie H.
Great happy hour and very friendly staff. The sushi was fresh, authentic and delish! Stop by for their happy hour and enjoy some authentic sushi and a drink!
(5)Christine B.
On our visit to Portland from San Francisco we came to have sushi here. Loved the ambiance, decor, delicious sushi, and beautiful presentation. Their specialty rolls are creative and unique- must try them! They have a great selection of sake. The owner was delightful and hospitable and spend time talking to us. Our waitress was attentive and took great care of us. The place overall has a great vibe (liked the background music) and fresh sushi. There is a lot of attention to detail in everything-especially loved the chopsticks with corkscrew handle:) If we lived in Portland we would be regulars. This is a gem of a place in the heart of the city. We will come back again the next time we are in Portland!
(5)Peter E.
This place is great because not only is the sushi fresh, the rolls are completely unique. Not the same old rolls at this place. Plus a great sake selection. Experiment for a change and try this new great place in Old Town!
(5)Phillip S.
Meh. The sushi was mediocre at best and overpriced for what you are getting. Service was decent and the bartender was friendly. I got the volcano roll and the california roll with real crab meat. Won't be going back
(2)Kim K.
Visiting Portland for the day and luckily for us, it was Friday, and SuBe is open for lunch. Great service and quality sashimi. Highly recommend Tokyo Tower and Poke. Yum!y
(5)Mohamed A.
Excellent Sushi and great friendly service! It was my first visit here and I'm definitely hooked!
(5)Rachel B.
Yum!! Sushi was FRESH!! Try the tower or ask the staff what they recommend. Fresh every single day and reasonably priced!
(5)Sonia P.
I love Sube! The fish is very fresh! the meals artistic and delicious, the decor is beautiful and eclectic and the wait staff is very warm and inviting. I'd definitely suggest this place if you're a sushi fan!
(5)RM M.
Friendly service, good decor and decent sushi. As other reviewers have noted, the roles were unique and tasty. Wild salmon sashimi and nigiri were treats that this East Coast tourists really appreciated. Would return again if we are Portland again.
(4)Di ..
Looking for a new sushi place in town? Your search ends right here and I assure you that you will be going back. Got there late on a Wed night. First impression: great ambiance. Greeted by everyone that I walked pass to my table. very friendly staffs. Talking about a perfect server? Craig is your man. He was attentive yet not too much, spoke gently with style. Ordered SuBe ball, Tokyo tower and ring of fire. The presentations of all 3 plates were like artworks. Soy sauce and wasabi? The taste was so satisfying that you weren't even remember those condiments existed. Oh God, mouth watery right now just thinking about it... Plus, there was well selected music playing in the background the whole time. Not too loud which made conversations easily exchanged. Overall, great place!
(5)Elvir C.
Very friendly. Brought a special dessert for my 8-yr old daughter, as a surprise. Definitely try Tokyo Tower, impressive and delicious. Fresh cuts of great fish.
(5)Melissa P.
New favorite sushi spot. So fresh, so clean. Fast service and really good prices. For 2 people, total $63 bucks including 2 drinks each. Spicy Tuna roll and Avocado Crunch roll, ample innards with soft lovely cream cheese. A sing Ahi Poke was generous for two. The Creamy Scallop nigiri was sooooo smoooooth. And we got the Chefs Choice selection with Hamachi (like buttah), Sake, Maguro, and Albacore Tuna, and the fifth I can't recall. Please try it. On a Saturday, we had a reservation but got seated early. I was surprised this place wasn't super busy for the time we were there. They have a loft like upstairs for bigger parties.
(5)Martin J.
Extremely helpful staff. Delicious and fresh sushi that did not disappoint. Not crazy expensive. $6 for a basic roll and around $10 for a fancy roll. I'd go back.
(5)Tom B.
Had sushi on the Bar. Efficient and quick service. Taste is very good almost like a $$$ restaurant. I will come back
(5)Rylie E.
This place is so delicious! The sushi is so fresh and tasty. The staff was incredible and were just amazing. This place is small and doesn't really look like much but it is so worth trying. We will DEFINITELY be returning. We are just visiting Portland and happened to come across this place, and we are so glad we did.
(5)Eee D.
Great atmosphere, friendly staff, tasty drinks and yummy sushi located near downtowns fun spots!
(5)Alexander Z.
Came in a few nights ago, this place always has amazing food and very attentive staff. Its also downtown next to all of the night life. Definitely recommend it.
(5)Hannah B.
This place truly swept me off my feet! From the friendly and attentive staff, clean and inviting ambiance, and most of all the incredibly fresh and delicious food. Whenever a new sushi place opens in Portland. I have come to expect an average dining experience at best, but SubE exceeded my expectations and then some. Ticked away in a comer of voodoo doughnut land, this place truly a diamond in the rough. You can't go wrong with the Sube ball or ring of fire, can't wait to go back and try more!
(5)Odulami M.
One of my new favorites - great vibe, friendly staff, solid cocktails and delicious sushi. Great lil happy hour and open late....
(5)Justin D.
If I could give this place 6 STARS I would! Fantastic atmosphere, out of this world cocktails, and sushi....off the chain!
(5)Hassan T.
Place is cozy and comfortable. Awesome that they were playing Jiro dreams of sushi on the TV while I was eating. Food is top notch.
(5)Stephanie H.
Best sushi I've had in Portland! Cute little place with an awesome atmosphere. Coming back asap!
(5)Liz P.
On February 25th we came in at 6:30 and there was another couple and the rest of the place was empty. There were two TV's and neither of the other people were watching the tv with The Houston Rockets basketball game on. We asked the bartender if she would change the channel to the nationally televised hockey game on NBC-SN and she said no cause it was a Blazer game night. The hockey game would've ended before tip off started. I said you have two TV's... Then she confessed coldly that she didn't even know how to change it. So we ended up walking right out and going to thirsty lion. And the game ended 5 min before the blazer game. The bartender we had at thirsty lion was accommodating and friendly. Needless to say we won't be coming back again until there is a turn over with the staff.
(1)Alanna m.
Beautiful sushi that's as yummy as it looks. Their speciality rolls are unique and adventurous, a refreshing departure from the same ol' sushi joint.
(5)Dar B.
Staff was good but chef or/ and waitress didn't know product . Order wild salmon sashimi but received farm salmon . They insisted it was wild king salmon . Chef has to be more knowledgeable.
(3)Darson B.
Good prices, great atmosphere and the food did not disappoint. Fast friendly service, Definitely recommend it.
(5)Jane L.
The bartenders are super nice, not the typical douches you see. Great happy hour prices too
(5)Bruce G.
Without a doubt, one of the best sushi restaurants in PDX. Good service, wonderful fresh rolls obviously prepared with pride. All ingredients are fresh and you can tell the difference from most other places in town. We have this on our favourites list and try to get their whenever we are in town. Did I mention, the happy hour deals are a steal.
(5)Michael C.
Standard disclaimer: I'm a sushi snob with very high standards for fish quality. We didn't have any drinks, so this review is purely for the sushi. In short, it was about average for Portland, and even a little higher when you factor in the interesting variety of rolls coupled with the cool atmosphere. The Sube Ball in particular was quite unique and exciting -- it's just too bad that it turned out to be mostly avocado and rice with not enough fish inside. This is just personal taste, but very few of their large selection of rolls actually seemed appetizing to us. They had a lot of unique ones, but few of them looked more appealing than the more traditional rolls. The service was good, and it's cool that they had Jiro Dreams of Sushi playing on one of the TVs. Overall, I'd call this one of the better sushi places downtown, but we've definitely had better in the Pearl and Northwest.
(3)Galina B.

Decent sushi, good atmosphere and very friendly staff. Go here for the Sube Ball. It is an avacado ball filled with crab, tuna, unagi and some spicy and crunchy stuff. It is freakin incredible. Their sashimi is ok. Rolls are decent and happy hour is solid. I hope this place does well and continues to generate dishes similar to the Sube Ball.

Tried them for the first time. We did not know they have happy hour all day on Sunday so that was a happy suprise. 1 dollar of bottle beer and drink specials. The happy hour sushi menu is limited to about 10 choices but it covers the basic options tuna salmon and vegi rolls. I would love to rate on a scale of 1 to 10 and they would be a 8 out of 10!

Fresh and delicious sushi, however, the ambiance and service are unfortunately going to be the undoing of SuBe. Rice was lacking sushi vinegar and the spicy Edamame the was void of any hint of flavor. When I called and they said it was "Su-Bee", not "Su-Bei", I should have taken notice. Despite the fresh flavors, there is absolutely no authenticity and too many kitchen mixups to make up for it. Sadly, I see this being a short lived experiment of mooching off of the Voodoo Doughnut crowd....

Service was very warm and friendly, which was nice, but incredibly slow. We had a fairly large party (14), but otherwise the restaurant was pretty empty since it was a Sunday night. Our food took about an hour and a half to come out. Sushi selection was very limited, and the food we ordered was only mediocre. Decor was nice, and they provided generous birthday treats to our celebrants, but this was definitely a disappointment and a waste of one of our nights in Portland. Would not recommend.

This place is amazing! We just visited this place again last night, and I have to say that we are so impressed with the food and atmosphere! Not only do they have amazing food (the Sube Ball is unbelievable), but they have a unique list of specialty cocktails and Sakes that are absolutely delicious!! We have also noticed how friendly and attentive everyone is. It is very obvious that the staff enjoys being there, which is a huge reflection of how the business is being managed behind the scenes. I would challenge anyone who thinks Bamboo Sushi is the best in Portland, to come check this place out!

We went to Pdx for a concert and were very pleased to find something open late night instead of the food carts. The owner was there at 1am and was so nice. We ordered 3 rolls and nigiri and the owner threw in some fresh sea urchin on the house. I liked that the sushi rolls we ordered didn't have a ton of rice and sauces to cover up the flavor of the fish. I would give the food 4 stars. Sushi chef was friendly and meticulous in his preparation. Service 5 stars. I hope this business is successful and maintains the late hours for our convenience when we head into the city.

I went to Portland to see my Niece. The whole family went downtown. All of us loves Sushi except my 8 year old nephew. If it wasn't for Craig the waiter we would have walked by. He recommended going to the outdoor table and sharing the food with the neighboring restaurant for pizza. it worked out great. My nephew got pizza and the rest of us were able to enjoy fresh sushi. The best part of this was the service from this restaurant. We had several small children with us. He was very accommodating with the children. Even to the point of bringing club soda to help with my pants while holding my nephew. I ordered an additional beer for me and more club soda for my outfit and all worked out great. Next time I'm in Portland I will definably be stopping by to get more sushi. It was great food.

I travel for work and get to check out some of the best sushi places across the country. This place rivals the best sushi places at any price point! Great food AND great service. Eat in or take out, you will not be disappointed.

Very high quality rolls. The portions are on the small side but so are the prices. The service was excellent and the atmosphere was upscale/trendy. Overall, it was a positive dining experience.

So good I went two nights in a row!!! Great service and awesome sushi!!! The salmon belly was the best ever, not to mention great prices!!! Large pieces of fish compared to most places I've been!!! Comfortable and quant but a large feel atmosphere!!! Everything we had was A+........ Did I mention great drinks too!!!!

High quality sushi, attentive staff, and great ambience. A wonderful addition to Old Town. They have 2 TV's (which are on mute) one playing sports highlights and the other playing "Jiro dreams of sushi" which, in talking with the wait staff, is what the business is inspired by. Overall the the ambiance is classy, using creative use with layering effects on the wall with nice lighting. Defiantly can't wait to come back again!

Very exciting and interesting flavors. I had to try the Tokyo Tower because of all the pictures on yelp reviews and it is well worth it. Delicious!! We ordered a plethora of sushi rolls and they were all just as great. Our server was just as spectacular as the food. She was gracious and knowledgable of the menu and drinks. We will definitely be returning.

This was the best place I went in Portland. The sushi was great, and the service was good. The owner is very friendly and suggested other very nice restaurants in Portland (which were also good). The food wasn't expensive either, better sushi than umi in Seattle (which was more than twice as expensive). Couldn't be happier with this place!

great service and a very clean place. right next door to VooDoo so if you want donuts for dessert after your sushi you can do that! I thought the rolls were good. not great or especially interesting, but good. and very fresh. they did have one GF roll that was made with cucumber instead of rice as the roll and that was really light and tasty. I've never had a roll without rice and it was fun to try. We also had the coconut/tofu roll that was on the happy hour menu. I thought it was very bland and wouldn't recommend it to anyone. prices were very reasonable!

All around great experience at SuBe Sushi. The service was attentive and polite and the sushi was spot on. I highly recommend the Ring of Fire roll. You guys are on your game.
