The cheese on top is generous and the egg is cooked to runny perfection (unless you request otherwise). But it was okay. The mole taco was sort of horrifying. Maybe it was an off day. While I want to give SDT 4 stars just because the chilequiles are so cracktastic, I'll reserve that until I find another menu item worth ordering (I would love to, but I can't just live off of chips and sauce). EDIT: I am giving them one more star. I seriously cannot get enough of the chilaquiles. My SO tried a burrito and seemed fairly impressed. I will try that next. Bottom line - get the chilaquiles. Any hour. All days. This is the spot for it.

Let me first just put this disclaimer our there. I have ridiculously high standards for burritos. I lived in San Diego for 19 years and I experienced what I believe to be some of the best Mexican food in the world. That being said, I had completely given up on Mexican food in Portland until I came here. This was literally a life changing experience for me because now I can have my favorite foods, prepared in my favorite ways. No joke, my carne asada burrito tasted like my childhood. The only bad thing is that I'm going to be wasting way too much money here over the next few years.

I've had A LOT of tacos, but these may be the best I've ever had. I stopped in on a whim, because they advertised homemade tortillas, and decided to sample their taco wares. I ordered an al pastor taco and a carnitas taco. As I waited, I filled up a paper bowl with condiments from their mini-bar (pickled jalapenos, roasted whole jalapenos, and limes), and grabbed squeeze-bottles of red and green salsa, both of which were were flavorful and fairly spicy. The tacos were reasonably sized, not the micro tacos I see so often around Portland. Both fillings were quite ample and very flavorful, but the star of the show was the tortilla. I was expecting the standard, thin doubled corn tortillas, but what I got was a single, thicker hand-made tortilla. It wasn't so thick that it was a gordita, but it wasn't so thin and dry that it broke when I loaded up with salsa. We were so impressed that we ordered more food - this time a machaca burrito. The burrito's tortilla was not as exciting--pretty standard, though properly sized, and wonderfully elastic, with excellent, meaty, squishy, unusual filling. We also ordered a dozen hand-made tortillas to take home (for $3). They make them to order, so it takes 15 minutes, and they're warm when you get them. I highly recommend this place, and will stop in whenever I'm in the area.

The Chilaquiles earns this Green hued dive a Four Star. This dish seems to taste different wherever you get it, but the sauce at Santo is better than anywhere I've experienced. Price to portion is more than fair. The Huevos Rancheros was above average, factor-in the huge portion and it's a deal. What is a slight miss are the refried beans. Usually an after thought, they are to watery for my liking; I prefer them paste-like. Likewise, the rice is just average. The breakfast burrito is standard for a Mexican place, but about $1 more than what you get at one of many food carts. Santo offers three types of hot sauces. Their pickled Jalapeño selection is a little weak. Service is neutral and parking is easy.

Delicious, traditional, fresh, and reasonably priced. The hot sauces are all tasty and plenty hot, and the corn tortillas are homemade. I will be driving across town to go here.

So many great reviews. The burritos were average. Smaller than normal but still filling. My partner had a basic bean and cheese which was mostly cheese very light on the beans. Refried beans were on the bland side. I had a veggi burrito with everything. It was just ok. Maybe the tacos and more exotic choices are the way to go. I will keep trying elsewhere.

My wife and I have been to Mexico 6 times where we eat the most authentic street/cheap food we can find, wherever the locals are eating. This place is our favorite in Portland, we eat there every week, at least once. The only thing it lacks in my book is a place to sit outside.

I stopped by Santo Domingo for the first time a few weeks ago and fell in love. Living in the area, I always went for quick Mexican food nearby, but was drawn to Ole Frijole because of the good things I had heard about it. Nothing in particular kept me from visiting S.D. - other than the fact I was perfectly content with where I was getting my food for the past year. I decided on a whim to stop in and try their chimichangas with expectations for a mediocre meal. IT WAS FANTASTIC. For 10.99 (I believe) I received probably the best meal I've eaten in a long time. I got a shredded beef chimichanga plate which came with the best tasting chimi I have ever had covered in enchilada sauce and fresh shredded queso cheese. It also came with a glorious (and generous) serving of rice and beans with a modest salad topped with sliced avocados. That alone was only 8.99, which would get me just a chimi with sour cream at Ole, so I went for another item. I ordered a carnitas taco. It was cheaper than the small tacos I had previously had at Ole Frijole so I was expected a tortilla with a little bit of meat. To my surprise, I received a double layered taco with loaded full of carnitas, herbs, onions and covered in a guac-like sauce. It was so full that I had to take the second tortilla and make two tacos. It was fantastic. I wholeheartedly recommend Santo Domingo to fill all of your Mexican cravings.

Excellent taqueria. The pastor was tangy and slightly sweet, the asada came with avocado, which was tasty, and they have a nopales asada burrito that is really delicious. I like it better than La Sirenita. The staff is very friendly too. Most importantly, they have great refrieds.

I recently tried Santo Domingo Taqueria after driving by it for years. Being from central California, I crave good Mexican food and am always on the hunt to find a place that can provide that. I had a Pastor taco which was the best one that I have had outside of Mexico. I also had shredded beef enchiladas and the meat was incredibly tender and flavorful. I don't know what took me so long to try this place out. They cook really good food, they are nice and the place was super clean.

there are these guys and then right across the street their direct competition Ole Frijole. they offer pretty much the same products at the same prices so i've been going to both now for about a year. and to be perfectly honest... i haven't decided which is my favorite yet. these guys have a more broad menu with lots of good additions where as the other place is more traditional and straight to the point. they both have all the expected sides and sauces and those are all amazing. i'll keep supporting both as they are local and lovely family businesses.

Solid tacos. Great choices on meat. I got my usual of lengua, which I get at any new taqueria I go to. I also got pastor and beef fajita. One was done up traditionally with onions and cilantro, the others had sour cream and one had a creamy guacamole as well. Everything was moist and all had really good flavor. Three sauces to choose from. A really nice green sauce. A standard red that wasn't spicy and an habanero sauce that was good but a bit liquidy. They also had some pickled veggies with jalapenos, carrots and onions. Really mild but tasted great. There were several food items that I didn't know, or at least never heard of, and I'll be curious to find out about them. Lots of other items I did know. Burritos, tortas, enchiladas and steak dishes. Tacos were only $1.75 a pop. Great price. I wanted to get a taco platter($6.99), three tacos plus rice and beans, but they would only let you choose one meat. I thought that odd. I also got a horchata, which was ok but a bit watery. That's all.

There are 3 Mexican restaurants in a row on 42nd & killingsworth an this is the only one I'll go to. The hardshell tacos are legit, and there isn't a better breakfast burrito in town.

I was really stoked on this place since Ole Frijole has terrible customer service. The burritos are not as good as Ole Frijole but at least I was getting good customer service. Until one day... I ordered a couple burritos to go, went home and started eating mine. Took a nice big bite and felt something very hard in my mouth. I spat it out and discovered a rock. Yes, a ROCK! In my burrito! I took the rock into the restaurant and told them what happened. Guy working there asked what burrito it was. I told him it was a breakfast burrito. I told him I'd be getting in to see my dentist to make sure none of my fillings cracked. He said "okay." No apology, no attempt at making it right. So... NOT RECOMMENDED!

Worst experience ever. Live in the neighborhood and was looking forward to first time. Ordered carnitas tacos and carnitas burrito with guacamole on the side as my bf is deathly allergic. Got home to find soupy guac on everything. Kept tacos and took burrito back since that was mostly going to be his dinner to exchange and pay for 3 more guac free tacos. Lady at counter said "sorry it's not our fault nothing i can do. If it were our fault i could change it but it's not."

Quality Mexican food though, the restaurant could use a bit of an update. The inside is reminds me of a flea market styled cafeteria (assuming you've ever been in one) but I guess in some sense that could be somewhat typical for an american taqueria. They definitely need to do something with the outside, the parking is somewhat awkward and the dumpster out front is definitely not ideal. I don't go to places always for the ambiance so at least the food is good and the people are very friendly.

Wow! This anassuming place is REALLY good. Handmade tortillas is a good start and everything beyond is well made, fresh Oaxaca-inspired food. Great variety of items and it made me want to return to this sparse, but warm neigborhood gem soon.

A no-frills taqueria. The best chilaquiles I've had since living in Portland (I'm originally from SoCal). By best, I mean, most like what I consider authentic. Nice salsa verde and not drowning in cheese. The horchata was a little too sweet for my taste, but I'm sure there are a lot of people who like it that way. Beans and rice were spot on too. Just what I would expect from a legit taqueria.

S.U.: "Did you have lunch on the plane?" Me: "No, just some cheese and crackers." S.U.: "Wanna stop for a few tacos before we get home? I've been wanting to try this place." We pull in. A sign on the door says (in Spanish), Today's special, Mole Tacos, $1.65. I love good mole. Many decades ago, as an Easterner unimpressed by gloppy, cheesy, rice and bean "Mexican" food, Mole is what brought me to Mexican food. Chicken with chocolate sauce? Gotta have it! We grabbed a quartet of the daily special, sat down at the tables, adjusted the flavor with a bit of green here, a touch of red there, and walked out saying, "I want to try their sopes next"!!

It's a mystery to me that this place is empty every time I've been there. This is a great 'hole in the wall' restaurant. Last night (my 3rd visit) I had the enchiladas in a salsa verde - just the right amount of heat for me. My wife stick with burritos. She's a fan of the machaca breakfast burrito. They make their own tortillas, but I think that is only on the weekend. The counter service is friendly. The decor is strictly functional and there is the requisite TV playing a Spanish channel. I guess the only reason I don't give it a 5 star rating is that I don't want it to get too busy.

Oaxacan mole, really tasty and reasonably priced (you can have it in taco form too, to sample, but my suggestion is to hold off the cilantro and onions, so you truly taste the mole's rich flavor. The mole enchiladas are a prime choice. BEST GREEN CHILAQUILES IN TOWN, plenty for two people! Kill-thehangover-spicy, they have plenty of epazote, the deal maker... The tamales are a true poem: smothered in a special tomato spicy sauce, Mexican light cream and shredded Monterey Jack (I really wish they would go the extra centimeter and use queso fresco or cotija...). I am a Mexican cook, and this place knows what it's doing. Excellent!

OK, so I have a thing for Mexican food. So much so that I've had seven Mexican meals in the last nine days. Just the thought of refried beans, rice, tortilla chips and those delightful little sope corn boats... oh man... me gusta!!! So a few days ago, when I was really hard up for a plate of nachos, and after 45 minutes searching online, I picked Santo Domingo. The food was pretty good and was done very quickly, but I had to take off two stars for the lack of service and for the prices. A plate of nachos and two enchiladas with beans and rice should not cost $15. The interior was a hole-in-the wall, which I prefer because it usually means good food, so if you care about the dining area, this wouldn't be the place for you. I'll probably come here again, but after I've exhausted other, more appropriately priced food with friendlier service.

I completely agree with all the good reviews - although a recent one from mid-May points out "it's not the best..." but "...closest Mexican to my house." I'm surprised that review gave 4 instead of 3 stars. Anyway, I've been going there regularly for over a year as it's on my way to a friend's house (and not far from mine) and I think it used to be great. Now, I need to still try to the tacos, but the burritos are much smaller and my two faves have been awful 2x / month for the last couple months. The "All Meat" has tons of big chunks of fat and is like chewing leather, and the "Super" - the Chile' Releano (sp?) was like chewing grass. The "Green Enchilada Dinner' is $9 and mediocre as well as just filling - I make much better at home. As a Portlander I have to give props to the "Bay Area Mexican" reviews - they're looking for "American-Mexican" but I'm liked it when it was very authentic, and really affordable - prices have gone up as quality has gone down. Ole' Firjole across the street I think is a local chain but still better now vs. a year ago. I drive out to Burrito Loco #3 on NE 82nd again. I don't write many reviews, and will try the tacos and the baked Jalepenos (no idea how I missed those on the menu!) so I haven't given up, but I'll never buy a burrito there again.

Cheap, greasy, delicious, huge portions. I think of it as a step above La Sirenita, and a step sideways from La Bonita. That's about all I got.

Oaxacan, reasonable and tasty. Tried the baked Jalapenos on a recommendation of my buddy who's Oaxacan. Wow! set the pace for the rest of the simple lunch of 3 tacos. 1 carnitas (4 stars), 2 pastor (3 stars). Santa Cruz has better pastor.

I was desperately homesick for Bay Area mexican food, when my friend from Redwood city told be to check this place out. Santo Domingo is fantastic! Finally, deeply flavored, serious Mexican food that makes me swoon. The carnitas were toasty brown and delicious, perfectly seasoned. I liked the array of salsas. Everything was delicious, and the place felt generous and sincere. The people working there looked like they enjoyed cooking, and making me a great plate of food.

Across the street from Ole Frijole connected to a Mexican market full of fine clothing we have Santo Domingo. It is your typical Taqueria full of everything mexican. Tacos, Burritos, Tortas etc. I've noticed specials each time I go in there and it does always seem to be different. I had some Mole tacos since I'm a Mole whore. They were good, not San Felipe good, but they were good.

I order burritos or tacos from this place at least once a week. live a block away. very quick and solid, good food. their bean burritos are always on point. also we dig their green pork stew. carnitas tacos are good, also tried their tongue tacos before too which were decent as well.

I love this place when I'm in the mood for some awesome, full-of-flavor Mexican Food. I like the enchiladas with mole sauce, the taquitos, and anything with carnitas. The only drawback would be that it can be a bit heavy, but meh, it's Mexican Food.

Tried the sopes they were mmm ok. Ive had better. I dont think they make them fresh. Already premade be warned they deep fry them. I had to request not deep fried. I got them with pinto beans (no lard +) their was nothing very exciting about them, just beans and some cheese. the sope it self had no flavour which is generally a good indication that they were made in a factory and frozen. they werent terrible and i was hungry . and i doctored them ip with salsa, onions and carrots. the salsa was not fresh and it didnt have any flavour. thee green salsa tasted really bad. like it had been over cooked and over salted, no hot or fresh flavour the red salsa was only just a little better not any thing i would get excited about. i asked for some pan fried chillis. (chillis torreados) they were over cooked looked like they had been sitting some where for a long time, not fresh and no hot kick at all. The sopes were edible and they filled me up. I suppose the only thing that was good were the carrots, and onions , that is aviable on the condiment bar. My firend got one pinto bean sope and a chicken echilada plate. He thought the sope was ok and he didnt really care for his enchiladas, said the chicken was old and Nothing tasted fresh. If i were in the area i might come here aagain. The person working the till the assitent were firendly and helpful. Another gentleman working there helped us get the locked bathroom door open, apparently somebod.y had locked the keys inside. Nice people and firendly vibe.

If you enjoy Taco Tuesday, then you have officially fallen in love with the Mexican Food. The main grain of Mexican cuisine is maize. Also known as corn, maize is grown for the past 9000 years after the crop was discovered by the people in Mayan civilization. Mexican empire flourished when they started growing beans, tomatoes, chili pepper, sweet potato and cactus. Till this date these ingredients are used in cooking authentic Mexican dishes and drinks.
Great use of spices, fresh chili pepper dishes like fajitas, tortilla chips, corn chips, salsa, chimichangas, burritos, nachos and quesadillas are invented in America. But when you are looking for authentic Mexican food then you must find a restaurant in the city that serves Rajas con Queso, Garbanzo in a Guajillo Chile Sauce, Pork Filled Chiles Rellenos, Chiles en Nogada, Molcajete Salsa, Pico de Gallo and Frijoles de la Olla. An eye-opening fact – Mexican don't like their food hot. They use fresh chili and other spices to create a flavor that lingers in your mouth.
Mexican food is great for those who are Gluten Intolerant as they use Corn instead of wheat in most of their dishes. Also, you can easily find many beans based Mexican dishes. Another dish which didn't get similar glory as tacos or nachos is the Mexican hot chocolate. If you love something hot on a chilly day, then go for Mexican Hot Chocolate. On merry days, you can enjoy the authentic Mexican Drinks like Tequila, Mezcal, Tecuí, Sotol, Bacanora, Charanda, Posh O Pox, Puebla and Pulque. Mexican Cuisine is for people who enjoy strong drinks and hearty meals.

clean and quick, but the flavors are a little bland for my taste. i like to have my face burned off with salsa! however, awesome prices and portions and a SOLID place to stop by for a meal

Very authentic and very flavorful! They are also quite reasonably priced.

Excellent!

Best breakfast burrito in town! This place makes great food at an affordable price.

I'll probably come here again, but after I've exhausted other, more appropriately priced food with friendlier service.

fish tacos are awesome as are every burrito and taco i've tried.

I only come here once ina while since its a bit far for me but I ALWAYS order there enchiladas, I Love their Enchiladas.. I cant find anything else like it. Every "Authentic place" I've gone to has been disappointment, but yet I find some hope here.

This is the closest mexican to my house. It's not the best mexican joint in town but it's satisfying, friendly, reliable, reasonable, and comfortable.

They painted the building BRIGHT GREEN! Awesome!
