I tried Sandoval's on Hawthorne as my friend was jonesen for fresh tortillas. Exceptional and friendly service and I really appreciate how cute the interior is and a great location on Hawthorne. You can easily find street parking fairly close on either side of Hawthorne. The margaritas were very tasty and in the authentic-style glassware. The cerviche was, ok... chips and salsa were decent. I had the chicken chimichanga and my friend had the chicken mole. Both meals were ok, not great... they were missing something and needed a bit more flavor, however the ingredients they use are fresh, bonus! The chicken mole presentation could have been better, however my plate presentation. I will probably return and give them another try for all the positive reasons I listed.

I was hungry, I wanted to get out of the sun, and Mexican sounded good. That's how I stumbled into Sandoval's one day. Immediately the server brought us menus and asked if we would like to order something to drink. I saw a beer & wine list, but nothing else. My first shock was when I asked for their margarita list (I almost always order a margarita with my Mexican food) and he said they didn't have a cocktail menu- despite the full bar behind him. According to Jon Taffer that's a big no no ;-P I tried to ask him what the sizes, prices, and flavors were, but all I understood was "house margarita" since I'm a visual person. So I asked for water for now (it was a hot day and I was really thirsty). Shock #2! We received half sized glasses of ice water. I drank it in 2 gulps and needed a refill. I've never been to a restaurant before that didn't give you a tall glass of water, especially on a hot day like this. After looking at the menu and seeing a $13 crab enchilada, I wanted to leave. It didn't even come with rice and beans! Mexican food is usually "big portion, small price." This place is not cheap. Btw, I actually did get up and leave without ordering anything. I went and got pizza instead. Oh, I almost forgot to tell you about the chips and salsa that were laid down at the table when we arrived. The chips tasted store bought. Most Mexican restaurants make their own.

Went in for lunch with my two girls, 6 and 2. The service was so friendly and attentive, it made for a very easy and fun lunch with the kiddos. They doted on the kids. The food was solid. I got the Relleno and was very pleased. They brought free ice cream for the kids too. In all, its relatively typical Mexican food, but cleanly prepared. The service made the experience.

Line was too long at Por Que No, so decided to try this place out for the 2nd time after being disappointed the 1st time and safe to say, I won't be returning. Witnessed a lot of unsanitary actions by workers, rice was old, salsa tasted like tomato sauce. Even the strawberry lemonade was gross. Save your money and DON'T eat here.

After that, they didn't even give me a full refund. They were very unwilling to help me with anything. second time coming here and thats my last. i hope this place closes down, it's disgraceful.

We stop by often for fresh salsa and fresh tortillas both of which are awesome! When dining in however, service/experience is inconsistent. The biggest pet peeve I have is to sit down to a table that looks and feels like it hasn't been wiped down. This is a very inexpensive fix, WIPE OFF THE TABLES!! Judging by the reviews here, they're hit and miss on many things (food, service, experience). Once they get the consistency figured out, they'll have a hit.

This place has really gone down hill since the remodel. I used to tell my friends what a great place this was but those days are gone. The menudo used to be the best in the city. Those days are also gone. The kitchen staff is now unwilling to accommodate its customers and flat out lied to me about what I was ordering. When I asked them to explain why they described the dish inaccurately they were arrogant and obnoxious to the server and refused to make it right. Our server was the only appealing factor of the meal. I am so sorry that she has to put up with them.

Terrible service: Pushy, impatient waiter at the beginning. Then, when I needed a refill on the empty ketchup bottle I was given, he couldn't be bothered to be flagged down as he was too busy chit-chatting with his coworkers. Terrible Food: I know what you're going to say but, I ordered a burger at a Mexican restaurant. I specifically had their California Burger. It looked good... and that was it. I paid 10.99 for a burger and fries. The burger had two thin, from frozen, patties that were unseasoned as far as my taste buds were concerned. The bun was stale and rock hard. I couldn't place if it was the style of bread or not but, when I picked a piece off to try on it's own, I could conclude it was old. The meat must have been expired too because I'm sitting home right now, after having missed a day of work, due to what I believe to be food poisoning. The signs are all there. Bad Ambiance: What looked to be the owner/manager was making margaritas for other guests. the blender was incredibly loud, I couldn't hear my friend talking across the table and we were the furthest table from the bar.

NO!! This place is a total rip off. $4 for a crappy taco?! The food tastes like it comes from a cafeteria and its completely over priced. The service was ok, the lady was really nice but very confused about everything i asked her, like prices of the tequila and what the plates came with. i got 2 tacos and a tequila soda and my friend had a burrito and tequila. our bill was nearly $40?! That is an out and out rip off! Im never going back here. i can get delicious tacos for $1.50 at the authentic place by my house.

Good chips and salsa. But I ordered the grilled chicken street tacos and they had an awful flavor. Like cow manure. My husband ordered the same thing and he did not like his either and he eats EVERYTHING. The diet coke was bad too. The ratio mix or whatever wasn't right. People who drink diet coke know what I'm talking about.

First, they have zero vegan food on the menu. I was able to order the veggie enchiladas without cheese, but I was afraid to ask if the beans and rice had been cooked with meat stock or lard or whatever. It was ok, not great. This is Portland, folks, please offer at least one or two explicitly vegan options. They do have an impressive tequila selection! Surprisingly, they do not have a tequila menu. I was VERY unhappy with their customer service around tequila: I have ordered tequila shots in many places. Typically they're $5-$10 at the most. The server suggested I try their special house tequila. I said sure, why not. I had two shots. When the bill came, my jaw hit the floor. Those shots cost FIFTEEN DOLLARS EACH. The server did not mention the cost, which is inexcusable. Those are very, very, very expensive single shots of tequila and I would have very much appreciated knowing they were going to cost so much as I would not have ordered them. $30 for two drinks of reasonable but not mind-blowingly good tequila is simply not worth it. It is, frankly, predatory behavior to offer such expensive drinks and not mention they're far more expensive than most drinks. I will never be back. You guys lost this customer for good by not treating me with respect.

Why are there mushrooms in this burrito? I didn't ask for mushrooms, they're not on the menu. I ordered a vegetarian burrito, it has lettuce, rice, beans, sour cream, salsa, that kind of thing. This was not one of those. And why is my burrito falling apart? Could you not just wrap this thing in actual tin foil. Those tortillas are pretty good, but you gotta learn how to wrap them tight. I threw out half of a burrito. I've never done that in my life. You lose, Sandoval's. This neighborhood needs a real burrito. And I'd rather not sit at a table to order take-out. People don't sit down at restaurants to eat burritos. Bring them somewhere cool. That's what a burrito is, a thing that's delicious that you eat somewhere awesome. That's the literal translation of "burrito." The end.

Food was poorly made. Nachos came straight out of the microwave, salsa was tomato juice with a little bit of onion. Very bland. And store bought chips. My chimichonga was coated with oil and very dry. Do not plan on coming back here anytime soon. La Palapa was excellent, I don't know what happened.

Decent food, good service. Beans were salty, but satisfying. I can't say I'm enthused by the fare here, but it's not bad. Just middle of the road. Prices are reasonable at lunch - $9 for a plate of tacos, rice and beans. No complaints.

I ordered a burrito with NO onions because they are very hard on my system. My burrito came loaded with onions. They said they would not charge me for it and then they charged for it anyway. I was with friends so I did. to make a big deal over it. It was just lame. The salsa was really good and they make fresh tortillas.it is just over priced and not that organized. No one know how to help me.

I've tried to like this place twice, and twice I've been disappointed in the food. The service is good, very friendly and attentive, but the two times I've ordered burritos, I've been sorely disappointed. They were dry and kind of gross. They need salsa or pico de gallo or something!! The chips and salsa are also nothing special. Bummer.

This place was nice as la Palapa, now... it's not so nice, the same staff are there who I really enjoyed before the remodel and now it just kind of blows. I probably wont stay the next time I see her in there.

I am from the southwest where homemade, authentic tasting Mexican food is plentiful. Here in Portland, too often I find weird, vegan, hipster flared twists on classic Mexican dishes or even worse, store bought tortillas and bland flavors (lookin at you, cha cha cha!) I decided to try out sandovals although the ratings are less than spectacular. I had the steak street tacos with rice and black beans and my boyfriend had a wet carne asada burrito and they were delicious! The service was great and the margaritas hit the spot. The only reason I'm not giving it 5 stars is because the prices were way too high... $11.99 for a chesse quesadilla? Say whaaat?

Let's get down to it. La Palapa has undergone a remodel and reopened. Gone is the salsa bar, drink station and other bar area. This is a sit down style place now. New decorating, larger cooking area, and you are seated here also. Prices went up, but nothing crazy. Like its predecessor, everything is fresh and plentiful. Posole is a new addition. Over 150 tequilas there. Same great staff.

I've now been sitting here at a table next to the bar for about 20 minutes without any service. I've seen one table attended to since I've sat down. The only person working here appears to be the bar tender. Too bad the bar is full. There are plenty of aggravated patrons here trying to get a bite to eat or just a drink before their flight. It's 4:35 in the afternoon. What is the excuse for this horrible service? I think I'm going to join the rest of the people who have just got up and left.

If you enjoy Taco Tuesday, then you have officially fallen in love with the Mexican Food. The main grain of Mexican cuisine is maize. Also known as corn, maize is grown for the past 9000 years after the crop was discovered by the people in Mayan civilization. Mexican empire flourished when they started growing beans, tomatoes, chili pepper, sweet potato and cactus. Till this date these ingredients are used in cooking authentic Mexican dishes and drinks.
Great use of spices, fresh chili pepper dishes like fajitas, tortilla chips, corn chips, salsa, chimichangas, burritos, nachos and quesadillas are invented in America. But when you are looking for authentic Mexican food then you must find a restaurant in the city that serves Rajas con Queso, Garbanzo in a Guajillo Chile Sauce, Pork Filled Chiles Rellenos, Chiles en Nogada, Molcajete Salsa, Pico de Gallo and Frijoles de la Olla. An eye-opening fact – Mexican don't like their food hot. They use fresh chili and other spices to create a flavor that lingers in your mouth.
Mexican food is great for those who are Gluten Intolerant as they use Corn instead of wheat in most of their dishes. Also, you can easily find many beans based Mexican dishes. Another dish which didn't get similar glory as tacos or nachos is the Mexican hot chocolate. If you love something hot on a chilly day, then go for Mexican Hot Chocolate. On merry days, you can enjoy the authentic Mexican Drinks like Tequila, Mezcal, Tecuí, Sotol, Bacanora, Charanda, Posh O Pox, Puebla and Pulque. Mexican Cuisine is for people who enjoy strong drinks and hearty meals.

(1)Greg M.
Decent food, good service. Beans were salty, but satisfying. I can't say I'm enthused by the fare here, but it's not bad. Just middle of the road. Prices are reasonable at lunch - $9 for a plate of tacos, rice and beans. No complaints.
(4)Lance H.

Rating is based only on service. Heather needs to be more professional with her customers. Customers should not be addressed as "fellas", regardless of the circumstance, and foul language is not job appropriate. Other than that, I got no complaints.

Food was great! I ordered the taboo salad, hubby had the seafood burrito. Really tasty! The weird thing was the server kept talking on his phone long after he made eye contact with us and had acknowledged he understood we needed service! Made no attempt to bring water or another beer! Then he Insisted we pay in our bill in cash! Food Service

Bummer.
(2)Kat F.
This place was nice as la Palapa, now... it's not so nice, the same staff are there who I really enjoyed before the remodel and now it just kind of blows. Their new waitress Heather is absolutely horrible, intrusive, and unprofessional. The food has changed a little bit...but it's not what it was a month ago.

Say whaaat?
(4)Lynn F.
Great street tacos and $5 happy hour margaritas were yummy! The people who work there were great, super nice and great service. I will definitely go back soon!
(5)J D.
This place gets four stars simply because the service is excellent. Drinks are good but not cheap. Food is very average but satisfying, but typical of "Americanized" Mexican. A little more imagination from the kitchen would really help.

(4)Bill F.

I haven't even had the food yet and this place is already amazing!! Not only that servers are amazing :) very handsome man actually hah

pieces of glass in the food. i called and they told me to walk all the way back there with the piece of glass in my hand and 3/4 of the burrito i had paid for. when i told them about it they said, "oh that's not glass, that's plastic." ...Like that makes it any better.
