A friend recommended this place to me & I am so glad she did. Our normal Mexican cantina is off the rotation & this will be our new spot. Great chips & salsa, fantastic drinks & top notch food. They have a great outdoor patio & an open airy feeling inside. I'm only giving 4 stars because they charged me 9 bucks for a side of guacamole - that's a complete rip off in my book. Also our server was not overly happy to be at his job. Sure everyone has an off day but this guy was completely out off at out request for more chips & silverware.

When I went here, I wasn't really that hungry. I knew I needed to feed my son, though, before we went on a two hour flight. I know I should've fed him better, but nachos sounded amazing. I wasn't disappointed. For nachos purchased at a quick service location in the airport, they were very generous with the nachos, and they tasted good - cheese, beans, jalapeños, sour cream, and salsa. It was very affordable, too. I think I paid like $6, and it was a lot of food. If ever I need food at this airport again, I would be willing to eat here again.

I honestly don't think I'd even give a one star the food was cold and tasteless. I ordered three meals to go and the meal was $50!!! Super expensive & no Bueno!!! Do not recommend! (The $50 was without tip)

After reading the recent reviews I feel the need to throw in my 2 cents. I like this place. I went a few years ago before the remodel, and although the food was good, the atmosphere was horrible (I seem to remember terrible lighting and a door dinger going off every 10 seconds), so I never went back. Recently I thought I'd try it again and WOW, great interior! Bright, open, cool decorations, and nice outdoor seating. I can't comment on the bar area, I always sit in the dining room. The food is really good, nothing ground breaking, but solid. Although, the Taco Dorado is something you don't see everyday, a pan fried taco, pretty tasty. The margaritas are pretty good too. I've been here 3 times in 2 months, so that's telling. Some reviews complain about the prices, seem pretty normal to me compared to other Portland places (except their $12 Cadillac margaritas don't seem worth it, they taste $7). And if they did go up because of the remodel, it was worth it.

Everything about this place has gone downhill since the remodel- except for the prices, those went up. I'm sorry, but $10 for a disgrace of a margarita and $9 for guac?! The bar is now a tiny hidden little windowless box, and not welcoming at all. Not somewhere I would want to go for a drink- even if it wasnt way overpriced. And what is with the owner's self-portraits all over the walls? Your mug is already on the menus- we get it, you own the place. I would be embarassed. Then there is the wait staff...where to start. I can understand if they are short-handed and drinks are taking longer than they should, but at least acknowledge it! It is as if they avoid their customers completely because they know we are unhappy. They don't ask questions if they don't understand something- instead they will just get it wrong and then have to take it back. Almost every order is incorrect, everything takes 3x longer than it should, and the food is sub-par. I miss Randy. There is another place down the road called Si Senor with better food, drinks, and prices. In fact, I see the manager from Sandoval's getting take out from there regularly. That should tell you something.

Both of Sandoval's locations are superb. The people are always smiling, I have lived in area for a few years and see the same staff members, this means they are doing something right. Great, fresh ingredients and Alex the bartender was very friendly and helpful regardless of his disclaiming his newness to location, he was quite helpful. My only gripe is I can't order Mexican in the connected sports bar and vise versa, they share the same name?? What happened to customers being right.

I've been going to Sandoval's on Miller & Barnes at least once a month for 8 years now (would have given it a solid 4 stars every time), but my last three visits have been quite disappointing. The "skinny margarita" now is watery and tasteless. Worse, the salsa the veggie enchilada green sauce - both of which used to be nice and spicy - are now completely bland and forgettable. And I agree with the other reviewers - the remodel was a big mistake - it went from being a friendly, zero-ambience, hole-in-the-wall with good food and a friendly wait-staff to being a somewhat tacky, faux-Mexican, more-expensive place with mediocre food and very forgettable wait-staff. I may give it one more try, but after that I doubt I'll go back again. Too bad...

Disappointing... Was a regular before the remodel, just went in for first time since reopening . sat in bar for 7 min. While 3 employees were behind the bar. No acknowledgements. I know 2 were making drinks one was wiping down counter. It doesn't take anything to say hi. I left, think they lost me as a customer.

  • M C.

Used to be a regular but after the remodel all of their menu prices went up, a lot! Happy hour used to be a killer deal but now not so much. Randy isn't working the bar any more :( my take-out orders are wrong almost EVERY time, no matter which server takes the order. No recourse because you're already home and they don't make up for it next time around, even if you tell them about it. Oh, and styrofoam take-out containers are bad. The bar is now a tiny box and not very inviting to hang out. Turnover in any business usually means something is wrong with working conditions. The only saving grace is Jesse on the Home Field side, she's pretty awesome!

I visit here twice a month , they always have the best service and awesome food. My aunt told me about this place and I had never heard about it before but now I come here so often! The food is delicious and the salsa is homemade. Sometimes it has more spice than others but that's what happens when vegetables are fresh. Every item is suuuuper fresh, yum. If your in the area go, it's a great price and taco is seriously the nicest server

My wife and I went to Happy Hour on a busy Friday afternoon. Great Nachos with Shredded Beef, and the house margarita was outstanding and served on the rocks in a PINT glass, and they take great care to ask you if you want the rim salted. The choices of tequila are extensive, and the owner Danny is quite knowledgeable.

Food and service was great! Love the new remodel and the outdoor seating area is a perfect way to enjoy summer nights! Portions are big enough to share and so delicious. Always have to start with the chorizo con queso. YUM!!!

The WORST, most unprofessional takeout experienced in Portland. Online menu prices are lower than the in-restaurant menu. When asked, the employee said they "hadn't gotten around to updating the website menu." I then gave her the opportunity to discount my bill to match what was advertised on their website, but she instead just ran off..... Locally owned Portland restaurants are an awesome brand and have a great reputation. However, this restaurant did not come close to making me a happy Portland customer. I'm new to this area and will be telling everyone to not come here.

  • Randy M.

Went back since remodel and the food should have been remodeled as well. The biggest issue and main reason we went was for the service from Randy. Seems he does not work on the Mexican side any longer. Well I guess me and the wife will not be retuning as the service made up for the nothing but ordinary food with too much pepper to try to compensate for flavor.

Portlands Best Mexican Food! I judge Mexican by three elements: Guacamole, Chips/Salsa, and Chili Rellanos. All three were perfect. Food came out piping hot as well. Great service, reasonable cost.

Been there twice. Mediocre food both times. My Ground beef burrito was 90% rice. I hate rice! Bland red enchilada sauce on it. My daughter liked her skinny Marg, but my regular one tasted like mix. The waiter never came around to ask how it was, even as he picked up my mostly un-eaten food. We went there after a doctor's visit at St. V. Will go to Hacienda on Canyon next time. AVOID!

Sandoval's operates two neighboring restaurants on Portland's SW Miller Road: The Home Field Grill (Sports Bar) and Sandoval's Café & Cantina (Mexican). Success at The Home Field Grill quite naturally led to curiosity about the café and cantina. Sandoval's Café & Cantina is a small but well decorated and comfortable restaurant. The staff is friendly, helpful and just as personable as can be. The owner came over and gave us a coupon for a free breakfast at his sports bar. The menu includes the usual Mexican favorites like tacos, enchiladas, fajitas, chimichangas, and burritos. However, what sets Sandoval's apart from Mexican fast food places are gourmet items like crab enchiladas and menudo. Your dinner starts off with warm chips and a delicious bowl of Sandoval's homemade salsa. Dinner entrees go for about $12.99-$13.99 and include rice and beans. Special mention needs to be made of Sandoval's "Giant" burrito. Giant is the understatement of the year. This thing is colossal! Our server warned us that we would be taking most of the Giant Grande Burrito home with us. She was right! Top Sandoval's Giant Burrito off with their delicious mole sauce and cheese and you have a near perfect burrito. Sandoval's Café & Cantina serves up Mexican cuisine that is much better than average. Better than the fast food chains but not quite up to par with the great taquerias of the Willamette Valley. The food I would give three stars but the warmth and atmosphere brings Sandoval's up to four stars. Sandoval's Café & Cantina is a great place to enjoy the wonderful cuisine of Mexico.

Pretty decent whitey mexican food. I'm not really into gringo tacos, but I was hungry. I ordered up the shredded chicken tacos, beans and rice. It went down nicely and when I came home after eating all those tasty greasy carbs I passed out. Best part of the meal was no tummy ache.

  • A K.

I started eating here when it FIRST opened when I was like, I don't know....11? It used to be AMAZING! In fact, when I went away to college, I would crave Sandoval's. They would even serve me breakfast items that I loved at dinner time. They were awesome. And, now....I can't even eat there. It isn't bad food, but it isn't what it was, and I can't deal with it. It just has lost a lot of of the amazing flavor I used to adore. Ohhhh well.

Although the food is still generally good, The recent remodel was, well, a bad choice in retrospect. The prices seem high now, high enough that we don't go as often.

As others...I have given this place many tries. It's close to home, privately owned and looks to have a pretty good following. Chips and salsa are ok/good I really liked my first pass at the tortilla soup but next visits left me feeling like I had a salt lick for dinner. I've tried a diablo dish, an enchilada and fajitas- always a miss. Drinks? A LOT of mix and DOUBLE the ice. Service hasn't been memorable. Neither great or bad. Prices, way over the top for what Ive gotten. I agree with one review on lots of 'stuffing' rice/beans. And another review another when he says Chipotle will give him better and more for less. Chipotle is MUCH MUCH more flavorful. Isn't it interesting when it comes to Mexican food people are so greatly split. Really good or really bad. Although- many of these bad reviews contain quite a lot re service.

I've always thought the food was fairly good if a ittle pricey here and it's in my neighborhood, but went to dinner with my wife and we ordered margaritas, mine a double. For$12 drinks, I like to taste my tequila and my wife's was all sweet and sour so I ordered a double. When we got the tab, I was apparently charged another $12 for the extra shot of tequila in mine and not top shelf. I'm not cheap but that seemed a bit skewed. The tacos are good but not that good...don't plan on getting out with a reasonable tab if you're having drinks. Tacos for two with three drinks, $86 plus tip... FAIL....

We ate here because the original plan for lunch had our arch enemy, the Former Landlord at the restaurant we originally chose. Seriously. Since I am working on "issues", SO hauled me out as I lunged at her, screaming "Kill, kill, kill!" We ended up here after careening around the QFC up the hill a little; SO slammed the brakes and hauled me in Sandoval's twitching and fizzing. Not much to look at here and our waiter coddled us gently like a bag of rocks.I guess they started the sports bar next door and then opened this joint next. Pretty amazing salsa with the mediocre chips. He had a carnitas burrito, that we argued about the rest of the meal what part of the pig this cow meat came off of, but it was tasty. I got the better deal, the hamburger. There was a small amount of this chipotle mayo/sauce thing on a spectacular bun. My heart beat rapidly that I was asked how I wanted the meat cooked and was pleasantly surprised when this lumbering burger came at me perfectly cooked. Fries were pretty damn wow, too. Mr. Server warmed up to us by then and filled me in on some of the details of this place and the ingredients. So how do you rate this hodge podge? Really the burger was a stand out, but I bet I could find it on the the sports bar side. The salsa was superb; his nosh, was oh kay. If we were running from the blood sucker land lady from Hades that should die a slow and miserable death at the hands of small aliens shaped like Jack Russell dogs, I would be back for a second try at the Mexican food. So, I'm giving it a 2. +1 for making me realize that I need to talk about She Who Shall Remain Nameless at the next group.

Great local spot, decent food and drinks. You'll experience better if you are willing to drive but it hits the spot if you want something local and quick. The food and drinks are just boring, that's all.

We've been eating here for years, great food and excellent service. Pollo Taco Plato is just the way I like it, simple in its presentation with cilantro, onions and fresh daily corn tortillas, allowing me to doctor it up. Also give the Prawn and Salmon tacos a go, excellent!

  • Elizabeth K.

The BEST salsa in town... You can even order a tub to go! Love the taco plato with spicy chicken and kids love the regular hard tacos that they cook themselves(meaning not pre made shells) . Extremely nice staff, and very simple & comfortable atmosphere.

  • Barbara D.

Yeah yeah, a bit on the boring side. The veggie quesadillas were great, but everything else was so-so. The salsa needed salt, the fish tacos they raved about on their menu were way too fishy even for fish tacos. Their tortilla soup was missing something and their shrimp coctail reminded me of maggots floating around in red sauce. Maybe next time I'll have my dinner here with a margarita and I'll give this place another star.....time and alcohol will tell.

I just experienced the worst dining experience at Sandovals. My daughter and I went to the restaurant last night. I had never eaten there even though I have lived in Forest Heights for 16 years. We were seated in the back room which was fine and our waiter, Randy brought the menus. He asked what we wanted to drink and I asked for waiter since I don't drink alcohol. This made him mad and he didn't bother to ask my daughter who is a grown woman. He brought the water, slamming it down on the table along with the chips and salsa. We decided to share the large nachos which also made him mad. The nachos finally arrived and we never offered any more water. The food was very below average and terribly overpriced compared to other Mexican restaurants in the area. The nachos were priced at $8.99 on the menu but we were charged $14.99 because we ordered a large size. I have never been treated so rudely by a waiter. We finally asked a waitress for the check and left the cash on the table. The menu items were terribly overpriced and we will not be returning.

The seafood burrito is epic and worth the money. Really nice staff. Traditional burritos are the same price as the chain places but better plus I like supporting local businesses.

Best Mexican Food in Portland, OR. The service is always super friendly and the food is terrific. Also, the salsa is some of the best I've ever had, it's just spicy enough, with the right texture blend for tortilla chip munching. Great restaurant and one of my main repeat spots.

The evening was already off to a bad start when the waiter accused me of having a fake ID, insisting "this doesn't look like you," which was pretty baffling, considering I'm in my thirties and no one has ever had that response to my ID before. I had the matter turned over to his manager, who immediately came over, took one look at my ID and said "That's obviously you" before handing it back to me. The server barely mumbled an apology when he finally brought me my drink. The food was mediocre at ridiculously inflated prices. A burrito on the dinner menu cost nearly $13 with no sides, and my friend who ordered it said it was bland and greasy. She could barely choke down a small portion of it. I had a quesadilla from the happy hour menu which was reasonably priced at $6, and satisfactory enough. I ate here for lunch once before, and the food was also pretty average then but with only slightly inflated prices. It's barely a step up from Taco bell but about 12 times the price. I give this place 2 stars because they were nice enough to let us sit at the patio with our dog, but only because "no one else is here." Which isn't surprising, in retrospect.

horrible service, hair in my salsa, warm margarita and my bill had to be sent back for errors. I would NEVER go there or any of their other restaurants ever again. underage customers in the bar......

We eat here weekly! Very convenient location if you live in the Forest Heights area and the food is consistently very good at an affordable price. The staff is friendly (Randy is awesome!) and checks on you frequently during your meal. They have a great happy hour also!

I've tried to like this place (6 visits in last 24 months) due to proximity to home and the aroma/kitchen vibe/friendly staff I feel when I enter. Menu provides good variety as does the bar options. Unfortunately, pricing and portions are way out of sync. The pollo asado burrito arrives pretty plumped up but alas, it only share's minimal pieces of bird inside. On the bright side, the majority of the ingredients (rice, beans, cheese) are very tasty - but I can get this at Taco Bell for a couple of bucks. A $6 chicken Chipotle burrito can feed me twice but the one here, when unwrapped - wouldn't fill a 1/4 cup. At least the quantity has been consistent as this is usually my go-to item. My guest ordered the fajitas and asked if he could substitute the accompanied guacamole for sour cream. Yes! our waiter said but extra sour cream is .49 - so he doesn't want your guac but you'll charge him to substitute sour cream? Maybe there was a language barrier there but really? Oh, did I mention the small amount of chicken in the fajitas but the overwhelming amount of peppers and onions on the fiery plate? Chips are very good and they make some of the best salsa I've had in Portland. As we left I told myself I will never go there again - not because the food's bad but value, especially for Mexican food, is lacking here. But I'm a sucker and will probably give it one more try.

Not good Mexican food at all. How nachos can suck is beyond me...overpriced drinks and very rude owner. Have been in many times bcause it is close to my house and regret eating there every time. My kids don't even like it.

Ate here just a couple hours ago, just to try somewhere new. Ordered chicken tacos. Wasn't terrible in flavor although the most I've ever paid for tacos. Unfortunately I am typing this review from my bathroom floor. Do yourself a favor and spend half as much at a taco truck for better, without the foodborne illness

I live up the road and have eaten at Sandovals a bunch and have never been disappointed. Good, fresh ingredients and they have never blown a dish. Not nearly as greasy and heavy as a lot of other Mexican places. Servers are more attentive than any Michelin star restaurant I have eaten at. Always friendly and refill the salsa right away. Nothing is out of this world, but all dishes are good. Good mole, good tacos, and good fajitas. I am pretty sure they make their tortillas fresh, as they are always excellent. Solid food and excellent service is about all you can ask for in a strip mall Mexican restaurant. Mike C

I've watched a few episodes of Rick Bayless (no relation to Jerryd). That's about the extent of my knowledge of Mexican food. My fiance and I had lunch at the Miller Road location on Sunday and it was terrific! The salsa was pureed to a smooth consistency and not like the pico de gallo other places call salsa. (Is there a difference?) The salsa had a nice delayed heat that complimented my Ninkasi Total Domination IPA. I had a chicken tamale that was served in corn husk which I had to ask my fiance if it was edible (I said my knowledge is limited). I could tell it was made of corn and not flour like I've experienced before. Generous amount of rice and flavorful beans on the side. My fiance had two chicken tacos that she said were excellent and the ingredients tasted really fresh. Sandoval's website and signage state "Our food is fresh. All of our ingredients are purchased whole, and then we prepare them ourselves. No pre-processed stuff, so enjoy!" Must be true. We enjoyed our entrees so much we decided to order two more. I tried their shredded chicken enchilada and she ordered two more tacos which left us feeling full and confident everything on the menu must be tasty. I must add that the service was great. The damage: Tamales $7.49 Chicken Taco Plate $8.49 Ala carte Chicken Tacos $5.98 Ala carte Chicken Enchilada $3.99 Negra Modelo bottle $4.75 Draft Ninkasi Total Domination IPA $4.75 ________________________________ TOTAL $35.45

They make the best salsa ever! My wife and I love coming here when we are in the mood for Mexican food. Staff is friendly and a give quick service. Try their large burrito, it's HUGE.

Quite possibly the whitest Mexican restaurant I've ever dined at, which should tell you everything about the meal you are about to consume. It wasn't bad by any means, but it was definitely lacking some authenticity. I ordered the fish tacos-salmon. I love salmon, i love fish tacos. I do not love salmon fish tacos. My husband ate his food (enchilada, maybe?), but then was sick as all get out the following day. It is the closest "Mexican" restaurant so I can't say that I wont dine again. After all, their EXTRA SPICY salsa was delicious and I couldn't get enough, but possibly I will try something a little safer.

    (2)
  • David M.

The service is good, the food is just so-so. If you want the taste of "Mexican" it is good for a quick bite or take out, but coming from Southern California, where Mexican food is aplenty, the place leaves me wishing for something more authentic. Better off just getting a burger at their Homefield Grill next door.

I read the Yelp reviews of this restaurant on my phone in the parking lot. (Which, by the way, is an awesome way to avoid the dog restaurants.) The reviews for this place were not all bad, so I thought I'd give it a try. The chips were OK -- homemade, but tasted closer to store-bought than at other restaurants. The salsa was completely flavorless, so I asked for hot sauce. Much better. It's a spicy, smoky sauce (chipotle, maybe?) that had flavor and heft. The shredded beef, rice and bean burrito is enormous, with lots of seasoned beef. It could have used cheese, though, and the next time I'll order it with guacamole and sour cream for some added depth. Not the best Mexican food I've had, but certainly not the worst.

I've been a Sandoval all my life, but after eating at this restaurant its was a disappointment to the Sandoval name! Someone my wife works with told us to try this place out, so being that I am a Sandoval we decided to try it (wish we hadn't) Service is not that great and the food was tasteless! Should have known better when I was the only Hispanic in the place!

  • J T.

Fresh and delicious! I have been here many many times, and the food is always great - they make their own tortillas, and you can tell everything is made and cook fresh to order without the heavy canned suases you get some places. I bring all of my out-of-town guests here, and this is also my 7 year olds favorite restaurant! Service is always friendly, and usualy very fast - can be a little slow on busy nights, but still is good. Drinks are good - order Danny's Favorite Margarita.

Small place, can get very busy. I ordered a burrito and it was HUGE! I was extra hungry, but my friends talked me out of getting the big one, which I was grateful for later. Excellent food, a good place for a group (our IT department goes there now and then), and I understand the owners know Carlos Santana personally and he stops by there anytime he is in town. Very good.

Giving this place a 2 star is quite generous. This is our second time eating here, and we have been let down each time. Can't believe we spent close to $50 here...wish we could have gotten our money back. I mean, I don't mind spend good money or good quality food. However, this was overpriced sub-par food! I have to agree with the other folks- this is a very bland, non-Mexican tasting restaurant. It wasn't horrible or bad by any means. Just plain. I don't think there was an ounce of Mexican spices in any of our dishes. Mr. Sandoval or the owners of Sandoval's, you must try Mexico City restaurant in Los Angeles, and then compare it to what you have here. But I can understand your marketing- you want your food to match the area here in West Hills, which is plain food for white folks who don't know any better.

Wonderful House Margarita! Lots of fresh lime, not too sweet and the balance of tequila is just what it should be. We came there as adults, (the child was safely tucked away across the street at Kids Klubhouse) with some friends. We sat in the bar. Like I said, adults. The staff was very attentive with chips and salsa right away. I like mine a bit on the spicy side, so I just added some hot sauce and it was just fine. I had the fish tacos with Rock fish. Very nice, not dry at all. I was a bit full from the tasty guacamole and chipotle/queso dip, so I just ate the fish/veggies. My husband had the Relleno and the plate was so full he could only eat half of it. It's lunch today. We live in the area, so it's a nice place to have a relaxing bite. We'll go back.

I tried to like Sandovals.. coming back three times but every time was bleh. The food presentation is well i will give them that, and i can tell them use fresh ingredients which equals 5 stars in my book, but the food just doesnt hit the spot with me. Very bland.

The best salsa! When I host parties, I stop by and pick some up. They use fresh local ingredients and you can taste it!

My husband and I stumbled upon this restaurant last night. We always tend to go to the Mexican restaurant that is closest to our home, and the food there is just mediocre. I loved what I ordered at Sandoval's - veggie enchilada with mushrooms, spinach, onions and cheese. It was possibly the best enchilada I've had!

Mexican Cuisine

If you enjoy Taco Tuesday, then you have officially fallen in love with the Mexican Food. The main grain of Mexican cuisine is maize.
