I'm pretty picky about where I can study. This place is spacious--they have a lot of outlets, some neat art on the walls to check out, quality coffee, and good service. There's table seating and couch seating. I like to take breaks and roam around a bit when I study. Recommended! Tip: $5 min. credit card charge.

Do you need to GET SH*T DONE? Red e Cafe is probably the best place in town to prop up your macbook and use some complimentary Wi-fi. This is a really cool space that feels like an art gallery (probably because it is) and has plenty of seating - the many small tables type of seating because they kind of cater to the macbook + free Wi-fi crowd I just described. This is probably due to its proximity to PCC Cascade, I'm assuming. The coffee is full-bodied and tasty, the staff are fun, and they have a good selection of pastries. The last time I was in here there was a kitty sleeping on the back sofa who would wake up every so often to jump up on my lap or politely tap my shoulder for pets. I love this cafe.

There are a lot of five star reviews for this place. Did I miss something? It's a coffee shop. They have coffee, free wi-fi, and a few pastry choices. There must be something especially hipster about this place that I don't understand which leads to the super star reviews this place is getting. Anyway, this is a fine place to get some coffee, but you don't need to go out of your way to make a visit.

Coffee Soda? Exceptional. I have never had anything like this and I highly recommend. A friend of mine suggested I try it and I just kept putting off going in here. No reason, but wow, the Coffee Soda put a pep in my step. Friendly service. The setting is pretty simplistic and open. Patrons all occupied on some digital device. They had an assortment of seating throughout. I haven't tried their regular drip coffee drinks or food.

Very cool Portland gem. Friendly baristas. Had to try the coffee soda and it was refreshing and had the right amount of acidity and sweetness and wasn't too carbonated. Husband enjoyed his mocha. Mushroom and manchego biscuit was delish! Interesting artwork adorning the walls. A wonderful neighborhood coffee place. I wish we had one of these in Seattle.

This coffee house stands out in a city of exceptional coffee houses. Red E raises the coffee experience to high art without feeling pretentious or snobbish. Anyone can comfortably walk in here, knowledgable coffee aficionado and tourist alike, and be served with a smile by efficient and capable baristas. My favorite drink is the cold press iced coffee or a classic cappuccino with whole milk. In addition to perfect coffee you will also find a beautiful and comfortable decor, varied and unique art on the walls, strong and free wifi, a clean well appointed bathroom and interesting customers. I ended up here for hours. I had homework, and I looked on yelp for a place with good seating, and I decided on this place! There was plenty of seating for groups and individuals. I had already had coffee, so I decided on loose leaf tea. They have a large selection to choose from, and they're all on display for you to sniff and decide. $3 for a small mug of tea seems a bit much, but whatever. She handed me the mug with the steeper full of tea in top. I thought it was cute! Unfortunately, I wasn't sure how long I was supposed to steep it for, resulting in an over-steeped bitter tea. Wish they would have given a recommended time when they gave us the reigns. Oh well. Free wifi. I didn't feel rushed to get out, and I'm serious. I was there for 4+ hours! Some gluten free baked goods to choose from as well.

In a town full of great coffee , the Red E stands alone for both the excellent coffee and a warm and welcoming space. The baristas are friendly and fun. I always feel like I am home whenever I am there. Even if you don't live nearby it is worthy of a trip to North Portland.

Red e has been roasting their own beans for some time. They are distributed to other cafes as well. Their newest innovation is carbonated slightly sweetened coffee, on tap, served over ice. It's rediculously good and may tempt those who don't usually enjoy coffee.

A cozy little coffee shop with a decent amount of tables and work space. We were here for a couple of hours and I could've easily stayed longer. Free wifi that works pretty well and yummy drip coffee. It reminds me of Albina Press but a little more neighborhood-y. I'll be back again to bring my laptop and get some work done!

First impressions are critical in the restaurant/cafe/coffee shop world. We have a "new coffee Sunday" klatch. The Red E is our 17th location visited. Our coffee drinks were very good but the service this morning was lacking. Not horrific but not good either. In the coffee rich city of Portland, consistent "outstanding" service is essential. Sorry Red E, bad first impression.

I am a serious coffee drinker. I need gratuitous amounts of caffeine and The Red E is one of the very few coffee shops that actually deliver. In the summer 2 iced coffee kegs tapped with regular ice coffee and an ice coffee carbonated soda with a hint of vanilla to die for landscape nicely at the front of the bar. Not only do they roast their beans themselves and prepare all their coffee bevy's expertly, they also offer tea made from the cherry husks of coffee berries. Who has ice coffee soda and coffee cherry tea? Red E does. When the copy cats begin remember where you got it first. A cafe for true coffee enthusiasts. I prefer great coffee from skilled baristas and support pioneers of the bevy/serv industry so Red E is my jam!

They also have free Wi-Fi. They do have snacks that look tasty, I have not had the chance to sample any of them yet.

I love coffee. It's no mystery that I've grown up in the Pacific Northwest during the first coffee renaissance (that brought espresso to every street corner). My long-time relationship with the brown bean has been a beautiful one. Living in Portland, the epicenter of the second coffee revolution - well, it has really just taken my love for coffee to the next level. Finely tuned roasts coming from small farms via direct trade brewed by baristas who see their work as a craft. Yeah. it's good stuff. Coffee is not just a caffeine delivery vehicle anymore, it's the end in itself. And I savor every sip. That's why I dig places like Red E. They're doing it right. Using carefully-selected micro-roasters like Coava, pulling shots with care, serving up straight shots with sparkling water to spark the palate, and otherwise providing a chill atmosphere for getting some work done. You can really tell where a coffeehouse focuses their energy - be it the space itself, making fancy candy-like concoctions, or a simple, minimalist focus on the espresso itself. Red E definitely falls into the latter. I've had a few shots here, and they have been quite good. I don't roll to this 'hood often, so I don't spend a ton of time up in here, but it's a good spot and they make coffee I trust. They don't just kick out caffeinated cups or overpriced milkshakes, they care a lot about what they are serving. I definitely will get cracked out here when in the hood.

Third visit brings it down to one star and never going back. Florio pastries this time around (so-so) which I didn't order, and charging four bucks for a chai!! Wasn't hungry and they insisted (no sign posted) that it's a five dollar minimum to use my card to pay. This is a coffeeshop - a five dollar minimum is asinine. And four bucks for a chai? As Yelp says, Eek! Methinks not. Plenty of other places with better prices and sensible practices that don't discourage those who use cards to pay.

My first thought upon entering, "The reviews are true." Unfortunately this review will be a mix brief and seemingly random observations: Spacious, plenty of seating options, great art. Why is it that the amount of outlets in a cafe increases its appeal? Iced coffee on tap--I didn't even know that was a thing. I wish I had known about this place when I lived on this side of town. Their use of red is limited, less is more. Will come again and again and again. Coffee.

I have become a regular a Red E, and not simply because of convenience to my kids' pre-school. The coffee is incredibly consistent and the faces are ALWAYS friendly. Having easy access to Coava is a dream. I'm so happy to have discovered them.

I haven't yelped in a long, long time for numerous reasons, but the gratitude I have for red e compels me to throw my hat in the ring for them. i've lived within blocks and have patronized them for a year, and I can only remain yelpsilent for so long. also, I've been reading for 90 minutes and I need a break. red e is the coffee connoisseur's shangri-la. the familiarity of hardwood nicked by chair legs, the sym/caco-phony of an expertly pulled drink, and damn great music lull you into a warm sense of coffee shop home. at the same time, the repurposed wood bar, the quality of the coffee (local!), the friendliness and knowledge of the baristas, the singular brick wall, and the rotating lineup of not-shitty art all signify that this is better than home - it's a homey paradise. space, taste, and, most of all, we the customers, are valued here. in the land where homegrown coffee shops are a dime a dozen, red e is gold. delicious, beautiful, caffeinated gold.

This is a great coffee shop with good coffee and a very cool space. Great place to have a cup of joe and get some work done. I enjoy hanging out here. The staff is cool too. The only reason they didn't get five stars is sometimes I can't stand the music, not all the time but sometimes they play really offensive hip hop, sorry but I like all kinds of music however sipping coffee while listen to some shit head rap about slapping the shit out of his whore is not cool with me. I would suggest having a little more awareness of the music you play especially if it contains hate speech.

I walked in here to just get a small drink while I was waiting for my friend to meet me. I was greeted by beautiful smile and friendly customer service. I ended up getting a pastry while I was there too. They just looked too good to NOT get. I updated up setting my computer and working a little bit as my friend was running late. I liked how comfortable the couches were. The only reason I didn't give it 5 stars is because the music was awful when I was in there. And it was loud. I never understand why coffeehouses have to play their music as if it's a nightclub. Dude! Turn it down and save our eardrums!!!

I recently moved to North Portland and live within walking distance of Red e Cafe. Tonight I decided to take a stroll to check it out. Seriously, once you have really good coffee, you can never settle for Starbuck again. The decor is modern and not exactly cozy and inviting, but I can appreciate a clean, tidy space. More importantly, the coffee is amazing (if pricey). This is definitely a place to indulge in a leisurely cup.

What a lovely addition to N Killingsworth and Michigan. I love this place! Unassuming little place to hang out with a great cup of joe. The staff is extremely kind too. They made my latte with nerdy precision. I loved the pastries they had too, I think I had some crazy manchego cheese and ham type one that was tasty. Nothing bad to say about a place that's doing quite well for itself.

Always top notch friendly service. I go here a lot to get work done as there is not only adequate seating but power outlets are overly abundant. Nice quiet but inviting atmosphere provides just the right setting for productivity. Free W-Fi of course which is reliable and fast, never a password, timed out, or trouble to connect to like some other shops I frequent. Not a lot of options for items to eat, so don't go expecting to eat a quick lunch here.

I don't make it to NoPo very often, but whenever I do I make sure to stop in at Red E. It is a great shop to get work done or have a long conversation with a friend. The baristas are always friendly and knowledgeable, and if you order a double espresso they treat you like royalty. You'll get some Perrier to cleanse the palate, and then they make sure to tell you the time and temperature of the double you will then enjoy. They use Intelligentsia for their blend and Coava Coffee Roasters for single origin espresso. From time to time it is nice to check in and see how Black Cat (the blend from Intelligentsia) is doing, but I prefer to stick with the single origins. I haven't had one I didn't like, and in fact, one of my most memorable espressos of all time was a Colombian single origin I had at Red E. Some people have told me they feel uncomfortable with the high ratio of hipsters that frequent, but I have never found the other patrons to be pretentious or rude. NoPo is very down to earth, and you can expect the same of this shop regardless of what clothes they are wearing. Also, they often have incredible art on the walls.

5 Stars all around - by far my favorite coffee shop in Portland (and the world) on every level, in every season, in every mood. As if the coffee, atmosphere, and pastries (a note to reviewers that swayed 5 stars b/c "there weren't enough pastry options": pastries run out daily...that's the nature of daily baked goods) weren't amazing enough, its served with the by the friendliest folks in town. Red E baristas' preparation of Coava coffee is heads above all the other shops in the hood who still haven't gotten the memo that attitude/apathy doesn't make coffee taste better. And, while remaining friendly and conversative at the register, they keep the flow moving and don't make you wait in line for a ridiculously long amount of time unless its a ridiculously long line (+8) you're waiting in. Also, they consistently have some of the best art in a cafe that I've ever seen. The temperature always seems to be perfect... I could go on. Lovely coffee, served with love. What more could you want?

I'm a sucker for wood floors, exposed brick, comfortable couches, and the smell of coffee. It doesn't hurt that they're open until 8pm, so I can head over and unwind with some espresso (yeah, I'm weird like that) and use their free Wi-Fi to my heart's content. I do love the space, though. It's simple, open, and refreshing. The front has window seating and a lot of tables and chairs where you aren't up in your neighbor's business. The middle is where the coffee magic happens. In addition, the back has coffee bar seating and a couch that's super comfortable. It was absolutely dead when I rolled in around 6pm on a Tuesday night, but definitely started filling up by 7pm. It wasn't excessively crowded or loud, but it was just enough to keep the barista busy. I had a soy latte, which is kind of my go-to safety net. I can't remember what kind of beans they were using, but it was new to me, so I figured in case the coffee wasn't to my liking, I'd have the soy to drown out the taste. It was really super good, though. $4 for a 16oz complete with foam art. I think it's safe to say I'd be fine with the $1 regular coffee with 50-cent refills, too. The coffee is good. This is kind of like my neighborhood Random Order (you know the coffee shop on Alberta) with a better space and less pie. I like it. A lot.

Located in yet another upcoming neighborhood of North Portland resides a new gem for the specialty inclined coffee connoisseur. In a city where Stumptown Coffee Roasters dominates the overly saturated coffee market "red e" goes against the grain by serving award winning Chicago based roaster Intelligentsia coffee in addition to the outstanding exclusively single origin micro-roaster Coava Coffee Roasters. Whether a visit is exclusively for a unique coffee experience, a knuckle down study session or a work related meeting place, "red e" is doing something new, different and deserving of becoming a staple of the Pacific NW coffee community.

I went here today for the first time. +1- I had their iced coffee (even though it is FREEZING out) because... I love iced coffee and it was wonderful! Yumm. +1- My gf has their french press coffee and said it was tasty as well. +1- The person working there was very friendly and chatty. +1- Cute space. +1 Clean Bathrooms -1- No vegan goodies. +1- She told us they were interested in getting vegan goodies now that they are more established and can meet the minimums that bakeries require. She also took note of earth balance when we asked if they had it for their bagels.

I only visited the cafe once for some morning coffee. I thought it was very comfortable and had a welcoming atmosphere. The prices weren't too high for specialty drinks, but the standard cup of coffee was perhaps a little pricey. Lots of electrical outlets for people wanting to use computers, and it looked like they had wifi. I would go back here again to hang out, or to study.

Took Mr. Extra Dry Cappuccino here recently. They were not comfortable with the order and stated that they really can't make cappuccino's and would do their best, but they couldn't really make foam. Really- a boutique coffee place can't make foam with their expensive machine? My husband was so tempted to show them how. He ended up with a dry latte. Coffee flavor was good, but it wasn't a dry cappuccino.

Visited the Red e a couple weekends ago, what a fantastic space! The owners did a fabulous job of using recycled wood in the cabinetry and they have accomplished that 'feel' that I so often look for in a cafe...open space and great light...definitely a place where I would want go to relax, be online, read etc. I had a latte made from Intelligentsia Black Cat, it was smooooooooth and wonderful. I was impressed by all the work that they were doing to get the espresso shots just right, practicing and giving it the attention that the art form deserves. The espresso, the time given to get it right, and the space will make the Red e the spot to go in North Portland. I know they are also serving Coava, created by a local roaster for cold brew and pressed coffees...I look forward to trying that as well. Go check it out! You won't be disappointed!

There has already been a lot said about the Red E, but I wanted to pipe in and add how surprised and pleased I was dropping in last Sunday to the shop. The space itself is gorgeous, I loved the layout of the shop, the colors of the wood tables and the floors, the bounty of space to lounge or work, and the openness that the overall space has, thanks to the windows of the shop. Sunday was sunny and gorgeous and it helped naturally light up the space in a way that felt just really good; it felt really good to be there and to work there, and I always appreciate that feeling of belonging. The current art installation is also very complimentary to the overall decor, and it was simply atheistically pleasing to be sitting there. The staff was very friendly, and I'd especially like to proclaim my instant crush on the barista with the top knot and the long beard. His smile made me feel instantly welcomed into the shop, even in my post-biking-from-SE sweaty state. I have to say that for a coffee shop, Red E is a particularly good spot to scope out cute kids as they wait for their various coffee drinks and I hope I didn't get caught staring at some hella adorable people as they stood around for their orders. As always, I appreciate a shop where I feel like I can stay and write without feeling like I'm being pushed out to make room for other people. I felt like I could have stayed at Red E for most of the day, but had to get back on my bike and return to the reality of harsh roads and a lack of cute customers.

I am always READY for some RED-E.... ohhhh! I hope I'm not the only one who appreciates that.... eh-hem. My boyfriend brought me here months ago and on that day magical day I had my very first cup of pour over coffee (I KNOW WHAT YOU'RE THINKING. JUST STOP IT). What a dream! Was it the Santa Sofia? The Monserrate? I can't remember, but every cup of Coava coffee I've had there has been EXTRA delicious because of all of the pals behind the counter who don't DO a little extra to make you happy... they just ARE a little extra- no effort, no sweat. And if they did need to do a little extra, which they probably wouldn't because this place IS a little extra... I'm convinced they would without hesitation. I also had my very first mushroom manchego biscuit here, which I later learned travels to this special spot from cross town buddy Crema.... YUM! There are usually a lot of dogs (4 legged) hanging out, I do love some furry friends in the morning. The owner's beard is sweet too, and I like his crinkly eyes when he smiles. Always wonderful. And my Red E tshirt is the comfiest thing I've slept in to date. Heart you guys, foreva!

The coffee here is good, the atmosphere is nice, but I can't help but feel unwelcome. The vibe in here is of pretentious coffee drinkers on Mac computers. The service is short and curt. I always feel rushed like I am holding up the line when there isn't even anyone behind me. On the good side there is ever changing art, and lots of power outlets. The inside is very modern and stylish. However, I walk the extra block down to Coffeehouse 5 where the service is awesome, the prices are better and the atmosphere is more laid back. This place isn't terrible but it's not my style. I won't be coming back.

Another fresh Portland coffee gem: The friendly baristas press exquisite shots of the Intelligentsia Black Cat (a rotating espresso that fairly explodes on the palette). French press and iced coffee are sourced from Coava, a new local roaster. I've tried a couple of the Coava single-origin roasts as cold-brewed toddy coffee, and they are without a doubt the most expressive iced coffees I've ever enjoyed--well on their way to becoming a summer staple. The space is saturated with natural light, and there are ample tables and seating. I'm particularly attached to the counters and bars, as they're an optimal height for standing work--good for the back! Outlets are plentiful (with more on the way), and wifi is reliable. If you find yourself in North Portland, stop in. You'll be treated to a superlative coffee experience.

Incredible coffee... I'm sure to come here every time I am in Portland! The baristas are true artisans, creating each cup with pride and expertise. The atmosphere is just lovely - featuring local artists works that I seriously would love to take home with me along with my perfect latte. Owner Keith is often in house, and his love for Red E is apparent by the positive energy all around him - from happy staff, to happy customers enjoying happy art drinking their happy coffee!

Great Place. I'm hooked on the espresso sparkler--very refreshing summer drink. Good ambience and the baristas are always friendly and helpful. They actually take the time to point out what type of shots they have available.

Mmm, nice. Seriously high quality coffee, in a nice ambiance. This is a great coffee house not lost in the plethora of other great Portland coffee houses. In fact, if you read my Barista review, then you know I like good coffee and will also tell it like it is. If you want the high quality of Barista coffee, but in a larger and quieter, traditional coffee house ambiance, then check this place out. It's in a large, well lit space, and with nice wood floors, with that beat-up lived-in look that only real old wood can attain, a rotating gallery selection of artwork on the walls, and yes--nice comfy couches in the back for lounging away the dreary afternoon while working on your laptop. I'm partial to a big cup of latte and chilling out on the black couch. p.s. I have to add the disclaimer that I do know one of the suppliers of beans to the Red E., Matt H. of up-and-coming Coava coffee roasters, but still, I meant what I said: this place is great.

Keith & Mindy are great people. I enjoyed my conversation with both of them. I love their coffee as much as I enjoyed the hosts; however, I don't really like their interior (too many hanging fixtures). This café has large enough room to accommodate plenty of customers. I always able to find a seat even though this place always full every time I came in.

Hands down the best decaf coffee I've ever had. I know I know, it's decaf. But honestly, I get the decaf sometimes because it tastes better than the real stuff. And the real stuff is great! They make a drink called a "Sparkler" which is an iced americano only they use pelegrino. It's absolutely wonderful. In other news: the staff is friendly, the atmosphere inviting/comfortable with plenty of space and good art, and the music is quality. Great job!

I give this place props for having so much space to really get work done. Plenty of plug outlets, perfect lighting to actually see what you're working on w/o feeling like you are in a cave and Free WiFi? can't beat it. Next time imma indulge more in the coffee and Tea, but till then, 4 stars for being a excellent space to get some work done!

I think this is the coffee shop I have been looking for my entire adult life. These guys are serious about coffee, and they do it really well. The barista asked if I wanted my americano shots pulled from a single origin Sumatra or the Black Cat Intelligentsia blend and described the coffees without a trace of pretension. The shop is gorgeous--spacious and well lit with reclaimed wood flooring and exposed brick, nice tables and chairs that didn't come from Ikea, couches that don't seem like they have been moved in and out of a succession of college student dwellings for the last fifteen years. There are a few tables on the sidewalk, a bar facing the street, and plenty of outlets for laptop users. Pretty much perfect. I only wish it were closer to my apartment.

The Red E is a top notch coffee provider with all the signs of a great establishment, the essential of which is quality coffee. They serve Coava and Intelligentsia and have found a niche in the gourmet palette with Brazillian single origins. The atmosphere is vibrant without being overwhelming and I've seen a couple of good artists come through already. You can't go wrong with Crema baked goods, but it seems Madres chocolate delicacies are taking a break -- aye! the best brownies in Portland! Hopefully, they will be back soon. This is my favorite coffee shop in all the land.

I've been back a number of times, and everything has improved! The music is better, they have lots of yummy pastries and cookies, and having the AC on when it is 100 out is nice too.

love this place. great coffee. great baristas. im a regular boring coffee drinker and red e has some consistently great house coffee. their bagels are always a little dense, like they are gf (maybe there are?), but i hear their scones are to die for (i dont know why i havent tried one yet..). mostly i go for the service and the great coffee!! you have to buy at least 5$ to use a credit card, but generally i pay for a gift card and it all comes out even--last time they gave me my coffee on the house when i did this!

Wow! This place has the best coffee I've had in a shop. I normally drink Stumptown (I vary different local types too) and I'm amazed at how smooth the Red E Cafe french press is. The one downside is that the people I see in there fit the stereotypical hippie coffee shop customers. Oh well, I guess the coffee makes up for it...
