Super friendly staff and the pumpkin spice latte was amazing. Made from scratch so it does not have the syrup flavoring that you find in places like starbucks. The cheddar bagel with cream cheese was delicious. It is my new go-to coffee shop when I visit my sister in Portland!

Coffee ranges from excellent to average depending on who makes it. Food is good and healthy, but nothing to write home about. I prefer Speedboat down the road.

Pieper Cafe is absolutely adorable inside (white and black tiles, cute tables) and it has the most delightful tea (like the sassafras tea that tastes like root beer!), as well as espresso drinks, sandwiches, delicious-looking baked goods, and gluten-free cookies. Service is super friendly! It's an order-at-the-counter kind of place. But, my favorite part of Pieper Cafe is their attention to the community. Their art display right now is art by three year olds, each with her/his own bio and description of the art. Some pieces are already sold. It's charming and heartfelt all at once, and you have to love a place that values the youngest members of our community and supports their self-esteem! High five, Pieper Cafe!

Great coffee shop. My wife and I spent the day working from one of their booths so we had the opportunity to experience quite a bit in one visit. I can describe each item as "outstanding." That includes paninis, soup, coffee, service, prices, and wireless (a reliable 20 down/8 up). We'll be adding Pieper to our list of regular shops to frequent.

The ladies who work are fucking AWESOME. I've always gotten a warm welcome from them/ not some fake better-than-you-hipster bullshit you get at other cafe's. This is real service. It's a great place to lounge with friends, read a book alone, or simply get some work done on your computer. For me the Vanport panini( $6 cheddar cheese, apple, caramelized onions) is the way to go. Or the Goonie ($4 nutella and peanut butter)depending on the time of day. Foster-Powell Pride!

Every bite of food I had was DELICIOUS! The Mount Hood melted in my mouth and the Cauliflower Soup was the best I've ever had. Kelsey is the owner and has the sweetest disposition. She has created a gem: the peaceful atmosphere and happy/calm vibe can be attributed to her management & business style. Yet, it flows with the neighborhood. This is definitely a destination if you are in the neighborhood. You won't be disappointed by the food or the ambiance: tasty & chiller. Also something to note: lots of men. Maybe this should be a new marketing angle? :)
(5)Dana G.
Oh gosh, I wish I lived closer! The ladies are nice, the cold coffee is strong, the food is outstanding, and the space is both cute and comfortable. They should teach a class on how to get coffee shops right, because this place is great!
(5)John M.
I love the piper Café, the staff is great and they serve Stumptown coffee. What else could you ask for?
(5)Heather E.
I feel so lucky to have this lovely coffee shop around the corner from my house. When you walk in the door I feel refreshed and happy. The women behind the counter are incredibly kind, funny and relatable. I arrived with the intention of ordering a bagel but their breakfast panini was impossible to refuse: egg, cheddar, sirache spread... Need I say more? I'm making this my new neighborhood coffee spot!
(5)Gonzo S.
This cafe is awesome. Their food is really great and I love that they keep gluten-free treats in stock for when I need my sweet tooth satisfied. Excellent espresso, friendly staff and cute art installation. Love Pieper!
(5)Mose B.
Delightful atmosphere and savory options! Plenty of space for working and a welcoming environment to start your day with a fine roast!
(5)Katrina W.
Pieper Cafe is is swell. I don't know how to pronounce it. It's full of light, and the folks who run it are sweet. They have a handful tasty treats, and this tea called sassafras tea? I think? that tastes just like root beer, and all manner of simple details a coffee shop ought to have. It feels wholesome and golly gee whimsical. Which, in this area of town, is a pretty huge deal. You feel at once relaxed and focused here, and I am decidedly a fan. Someday when I grow up and become a regular coffee drinker, or a work-from-home entrepreneurial type, I am certain this will become my regular haunt.
(4)Cyndi A.
Sorry. The espresso machine was broke, muffins dry and tasteless. Chai watered down even though I asked for spicy. Table was sticky. Wifi unreliable. Service was friendly and apologetic. Maybe next time.
(2)Roksana E.
Mount Hood add Bacon... Amazing and coffee is not bad either.... Worthy your breakfast.
(5)Leah T.
Always friendly, yummy and what my caffeine-deprived brain needs. I wish they were open later!
(5)Lolly P.
I Love Pieper Cafe...great americanos (stumptown) and yummy food. Great Service and the shop serves as a great community spot. (info on neighborhoods, monthly art, neighbor meeting spot) Glad Pieper Cafe is in Mt. Scott-Arleta!
(5)Kyle B.
Great breakfast sandwiches, cool atmosphere and location in the up and coming Lents area of Portland. I would recommend it!
(4)Annelise K.
Pieper is a nice little coffee shop in an area that needs it! spacious, plenty of tables, very nice proprietor. Board games! My latte was very nice, but my enormous almond croissant was not that great--more bready, less flaky, than I seek in a croissant. I'd be happy to go back & try more things, though, and the vibe was very casual & nice. And I got a deal via Yelp, first time I'd tried that: paid $7 for $10 of credit, love that!
(4)Lexie S.
So happy this spot is near my house! Completely dog friendly outdoor seating and a delicious breakfast sandwich special! The cold brew coffee was spot on!
(4)Mary B.
I found this little place when I was working nearby. I needed a quick and easy lunch for me and my 3 kids. Something they would actually eat. Grilled cheese!!! Yes! And they had a yelp deal? Bonus! I used their wifi to purchase the yelp deal right in the cafe on my phone. Then went ahead and used it right then and there. Very easy. The grilled cheeses turned out delicious. There were many different kinds of cheeses to choose from and they grill-pressed it right there. I even had some stumptown coffee to go with it. Thanks, Pieper Cafe! If I'm ever in the area again in need of some hot sandwiches and coffee, I know where to go!
(4)Michael G.
This is a great cafe. Staff is very friendly, even agreed to customize the menu a bit for us. Both coffee and food are great quality. Interior is very spacious and clean with interesting stuff to read. Also nice that they have tables out front. My only qualm is that it's a little pricey given the location- almost $2 for a small drip coffee.
(5)Stephanie W.
Great, friendly staff, good tunes, and super yummy drinks! I think this might turn out to be my new favorite study spot!
(4)Sean B.
This place rocks the universe! Great staff and super friendly! I'm glad Foster-Powell has a coffee shop like this now. Great lunch eats, especially the sandwich sometimes known as the "Sean B." It's a great sandwich, just ask for it. For real, awesome place.

I am sitting here in Pieper Cafe and realize I have not written a review for my neighborhood cafe! Until Pieper Cafe opened it's doors 7 months ago, Foster Powell was in desperate need of a decent coffee shop, the kind you find in almost every other hood in Portland, the kind where you don't even have to think about it, you just go because you know it's going to be exactly what you want in a local spot to sip warm drinks, read the paper, chat with neighbors, maybe get a little work done and nibble tasty sandwiches, salads and soups made in house. But there is another reason that I love Pieper - they have gluten free options! You can request any of the panini to be made with Udi's bread and they also sell Blue Moon baked goods which are awesome, gluten-free or no. So, my boyfriend and I can go here and know that we will be able to have a snack or meal that satisfies and suits our diets. Kelsey and her staff are so warm and welcoming and that is the other half of the equation that equals a successful local cafe. Kelsey is precisely the type of person you want to see when you walk in - easygoing, cheerful without being falsely chipper, good sense of humor and a ready ear to listen to whatever is on your mind. And finally, I greatly appreciate what they have done with the space. What was previously a dark, depressing and disorganized jumble is now bright and cheerful, with a classic red black and white theme, big tables in booths if you need to spread out or a window bar if you just want to watch the world of Foster go by (this can be quite entertaining).
(5)Monica O.
My favorite morning spot in SE Portland. The staff rocks, the food is phenomenal and quick! Mm and great coffee! I'm not a big yelp reviewer but I just adore everything about this place ! Also try their chocolate tea bread! So amazing ! They get them in on Wednesdays!
(5)Jessica S.
ahh my friendly neighborhood cafe. Great place to stop in for a latte. I love it for the convenience. Even though there is a chain coffee shop near here it's always good to support all the local businesses.
(4)Unicorn B.
Welcoming, airy, tasty new addition to the neighborhood. Been here a couple times now, hanging out inside and enjoying the coffee n food offerings. Here's hoping the funkier Foster/82nd ave elements don't drift in the door (either personally or via shouts and cigarette smoke) as regularly as they did when it was Yo Mama's. Best of luck to you Pieper.
(4)Dylan S.
Friendly service, good food, nice space, and good prices.
(5)Shawn O.
Wow! What a change from the old Yo Mama's. Great coffee and nice local pastries. I tried the homemade soup and it was delicious. I agree with the other reviewer that the pinball machines are a nice addition as well as the centipede game.
(5)malia s.
Great neighborhood coffee shop in Foster-Powell. Very friendly staff, plenty of seating, stumptown coffee, and delicious snacks!
(5)Brook N.
I think this place is great. Having a yelp deal on top of a nice cafe is a great business idea. I'm new to the area and only in PDX for a few months. I was worried if there would be any cafes around my place so I was extremely happy to find this spot. They have reliable wifi, breakfast and lunch and friendly staff. The music and environment is not intrusive for studying or working. The quality of food seems good, too. I wish they were open later and they had more options for lesser expense.
(5)Lindsay W.
This is a very pleasant non-chain cafe that I came across when I was getting my car worked on at Bill's Automotive. I was so happy to find it just a few blocks away. The staff is very friendly, greeting guests as we enter. Coffee is great (I want to try the vanilla latte next time). I love the bagels there - crunchy and tasty. Tables are spacious, and there are outlets for hooking up the laptop if one chooses. It's cool that there's a discount coupon here as well. An excellent low-key place to chill out and have some tasty coffee and other treats.
(5)Ed S.
Very tidy and welcoming with good coffee and light eats. There are a few spacious booths with power outlets for laptop campers. The two pinball machines are sequestered in a tiny room in back, which keeps their sounds isolated from the rest of the cafe, but make them a joy to play because you can actually hear all the music and sounds. The coffee and food are prepared with love and the staff is more than gracious. A gem in the neighborhood. Let's hope this, the board game store and the newly remodeled movie-theater across the street can bring sustained charm and spirit to what I have seen over the years as a run-down stretch of Foster. Now, we just need Guapo Comics back.
(5)Raechel S.
We started coming here for olive and dingo in Wednesday afternoons. Don't live in the area but make the shows. Great friendly service. Lots of Space for story time compared to other cafés .Always parking out front.
(5)Laura N.
Stumptown coffee 2 mins from home?! Yesssss! Could use a pick-me-up as far as ambiance goes...more art! Friendly service, though. Happy to have a new addition to the fopo hood.
(4)Andy H.
Great sandwiches, coffee and service. Just the right combo of things this neighborhood needs! Very excited to have them here.
(5)Cache D.
Okay, I was wrong, they've got free refills!
(5)Autumn M.
Love this place! They have everything, pinball, reading nook plus they serve fancy grilled cheese!!! And the people are friendly and real. I think I just found my new favorite place to chill and do homework... Thanks pieper cafe!
(5)Nick D.
Stopped in for lunch a few weeks ago and had a pressed bagel sandwich and cup or homemade soup that only my grandma could have made better. Grabbed coffee and donuts from here a couple times now as well. Great place and friendly staff...and free wi-fi. Definitely seems like a cafe I could hang out in all day.
(5)heidi l.
i have lived in this neighborhood for six years and am so happy to have another breakfast option. i love bar carlo and arletta library but sometimes want a quick breakfast with no wait and pieper fills that spot. the coffee and snacks are great as well. the space is open and comfortable and the staff is GRRRREEAAAAT! thanks ladies for filling a niche.
(5)ann c.
yuuuuuummmmmy!!!! coffee is delish, food is to die for . . . if you're in the neighborhood, you must stop by!! such a cozy little spot to hang out all day particularly as the staff is so friendly!
(5)Sara W.
I really liked the atmosphere, and the panini special I had was perfect for breakfast-hearty, hot, and filling, without being too big. They have card games and books to read, and good music choice. Everyone there seemed happy to help and in a good mood. Unfortunately, the lattes were burnt pretty badly, but I know coffee quality changes depending on who's making it. I'll be trying it again.
(4)Jill B.
My favorite coffee shop in Portland, hands down! Staff are crazy friendly and way accommodating, food is tasty and their coffee is tasty as hell.
(5)Emily E.
The people who work here are really nice. The drinks are hit and miss depending on who makes them. The ambience is okay, but seat cushions are torn and it's not exactly a cozy place. I used to come in here to work all the time, but one of the women working behind the counter is way too talkative and crazy annoying so I've stopped coming in. I know that seems silly, but I got tired of hearing endless conversation (always about herself) that made it too hard to concentrate or relax. Don't expect to get reasonably priced food, either. I once watched a man order a sandwich and storm out when he was told it would be $9!! A simple sandwich!!
(3)Mimi O.
The staff here is really nice and efficient. Coffee was good. Sandwich was okay. The tomato soup was the best part! Delicious! The decor/furnishing needs a little revamping but overall a good place for a quick lunch.
(4)Melody G.
I showed up at Pieper Cafe just as they were closing, to my surprise. The staff were very friendly and even let me use they're restroom. Thank you for the great last minute service! The honey lavender latte is delicious! I never knew lavender could go so well with espresso.
(5)Crystal C.
Stumptown coffee, delicious panini's and a sweet and fun staff make this my favorite local coffee spot in all of Portland. We go frequently enough they now know us by name and have our regular order memorized. Nothing is better than not having to articulate before the first morning coffee!
(5)Miles K.
Pieper is such a great coffee shop to have in the neighborhood. Super friendly staff, strong coffee (and only $1 to add a double shot), and a pretty solid food menu, including several vegan options. My only minor complaint is the 50 cents up charge for alternative milks. Overall, though, this place is awesome.
(5)Erika S.
So when you search gluten free breakfast this shows up. Technically they do offer gluten free bread for a little extra. No gf bagels though... I guess you could get a panini? Not a terrible option cut not for economical. I think they charge $2 extra. I would prefer gluten free bagel option. I don't really want to spend almost $10 on a breakfast "sandwich". Coffee was great. Service with a smile. Wish they had some fruit cups? Gf oatmeal? Gf bagels. Gf breakfast frittata muffins. All of those would hold up pretty well... Stumptown coffee!!! Nice atmosphere on the inside. Fast service. I would go back for the coffee:) Ps-they do have some pre-packaged gf cookies. As most people know gf goods, pre-packaged dries out SO fast not really with it...
(4)Andrea B.
I used a yelp deal and was pretty happy with their food and their coffees. Could lose the company that shared the dining area with me though :( Both times I have been in there, there are "regulars" that act like they own the place and have, seemingly, no respect for the other patrons. The sweet girls at the counter appear too meek to say anything, so I was forced to listen to a heated phone conversation with a tech company the first time. The other time, I had to stand as there was no where to sit due to them deciding that a cup of coffee was worth an entire table for the whole time I was there.....for 1 person. Guess I'll get my good food to go....
(3)Zsombor S.
The environment was very friendly when I entered and so were the employees. The only thing was that my coffee and bagel took a little bit of waiting to get. Even with the wait though, they were more than exceptional. The multigrain bagel with cream cheese was scrumptious and so was the Irish cream coffee. I can't wait to try out more flavors they have.
