Italian Cuisine
The immense popularity of Italian cuisine globally isn't unknown. You can find an Italian Pizzeria around every corner of almost every city in the United States. Not to forget that in every house, people enjoy mac and cheese as comfort food. But it would be wrong to believe that Italian food starts with pizza and ends with good pasta as this Mediterranean country has much more to offer other than these two dishes. In Italian Cuisine, there is a high use of fresh tomatoes, all kinds of herbs, great quality of cheese, all types of meat, seafood and fresh handmade pasta. Many find it hard to believe that Italians have been making noodles long back.
Italian and Greek cuisines are always mistaken to be same, but they are poles apart. The primary difference between the two cuisines is the use of cheese in most of the Italian dishes. Italians love to cultivate their own cheese and process them as per their food requirement. It is believed that some cheese is so expensive that cheese producers secure them in lockers.
If you are bored eating the same old pasta or pizza, you can try some of the authentic Italian dishes like Risotto, Polenta, Ribollita, Lasagna, Fiorentina Steak, Bottarga, Ossobuco, Carbonara, Focaccia, Arancini and Supplì. Another item which Italians love to relish every morning is a good cup of Italian Coffee. Once you taste a freshly brewed cup of Italian Coffee, you might not visit Starbucks ever again. Authentic Italian food is made with heart and soul, so go find a restaurant where you can relish Italian cuisine in your city.

Great stop for morning coffee, pastries, and who can forget the tomato basil and grilled cheese during lunch!

We visit Portland a few times a year and make a point of visiting this place every time. It reminds me of a cafe that we frequented when in the Cinque Terre. The coffee is good, the bread is good, the salads are good. Everything is good! Other neighborhood cafes aren't nearly as authentic, don't have the friendly service, or the quality of food. Whether I want a coffee and a pastry, a salad and soup, or a glass of wine in the afternoon, this is the place I choose.
(5)Wyan R.
I did not try the espresso, however to me this is everything a breakfast bakery should be: friendly, artisan, delicious, and well priced!
(5)Emma P.
I work downtown and on those days when I want to take a longer lunch, I head to Pazzoria. They have great cold salads which you can combine and make a hearty lunch. They also have panini, soup, and pizza specials. But what I really love is getting one of their delicious grilled cheese sandwiches with tomatoes inside and dipping it lovingly into one of their homemade hot soups. There is usually a line at lunch, but service is quick and friendly. There is no table service, you just pick it up at the counter. Try it!

On a recent visit to Portland, I stayed in a downtown hotel and wandered around in vain looking for a good cafe I could sit at for a little while. (If I'd had more time, I would have taken a walk up to Anna Bannana's, but the evening was closing in fast.) I was about to give up the search, but I called a friend who used to live here, and she recommended this place. Pazzoria is a charming little cafe connected to Ristorante Pazzo in the Hotel Vintage Plaza. Only open in the mornings and afternoons, Pazzoria offers freshly baked bread and pastries, panini, soups, salads, pizza, and pasta. They also serve the full range of beverages, including freshly squeezed juices as well as beer and wine. Everything looked fantastic, though all I wanted was a little snack, so I ordered a chocolate cookie with white chocolate chips and a Pellegrino and relaxed at one of the marble tables. The cookie was fantastic, both light and rich at the same time. I ended up getting two more cookies (another of the same plus a regular chocolate chip) and a loaf of ciabatta to go -- they even threw in some butter for me. Very nice treat to have these delights in my hotel room for the rest of the weekend. Given how much I love Portland, I'm bound to return someday, and Pazzoria will be on my list of places to revisit. Though I wish my review could have been more detailed, I'm honored to be the first to get it on Yelp. Highly recommended.

Very good ciabatta. 2nd best bakery that I can walk to on my lunch hour. Cozy atmosphere.

i just came here with my mom during a busy saturday lunch and i had the most delicious pizza with beet salad, and my mom had eggplant parmesan with the orange salad. seriously delicious food.
(5)Kim P.
Had a Delicious chocolate croissant here. I was kinda expecting a bigger selection though.
(4)Tamara Y.
great granola and yogurt and when staying right downtown a fantastic place to grab breakfast and go back to the room and then go back to sleep.

Great for take-away lunches! I'm one of those poor bastards who has been trying to cut back on my "bread" intake, so I go here less and less. It's still the place to go if you're craving a nice thick sandwich. The deli meat is great and dispensed in generous portions, and it should be no surprise that the breads are just fabulous. You can add one of their several salads for a buck or so, making this an economical choice as much as one of flavor. My favorites: ANY of the Italian meat-based sandwiches The baby spinach salad I pass on: Didn't care for the tuna salad, but I think that's a matter of personal tastes Price-wise, the half sandwich and salad is probably your cheapest lunch of that quality in the area. ...I still get the full sandwich. The cookies are delicious, but I find them spendy for "just a cookie." I've seen complaints about lines -- I've been there when the line was nearly to the door, and I still don't think I waited longer than 6 minutes to get my meal. They run the lunch line well. What I do not see so often is an empty table.
(4)Grace O.
cute sandwich/bakery shop close to the hotel where bf and i stayed in during our trip to portland...what a great first place to eat for us AND very inexpensive given our normal prices in CA!
(4)Laura Q.
close to work. good atmosphere. good food. counter service was great.will go back again.

Eating my sandwich as I'm writing this.... I have been looking forward to trying this place for weeks. I was really hoping this would be my new go to place for lunch. Got the grilled cheese and organic greens salad to go. As I opened the container the first thing I saw was a 10 inch hair in between the salad leaves. Threw away the salad, still ate the sandwich. Half of a grilled cheese for $8.50 (includes tip).... Don't think I will go back.
(2)Suzanne D.
This is the perfect spot for quality lunch at reasonable prices. The staff was very polite and helpful. And the eggplant parmesan was delicious. I'll definitely be back for more.

Pazzos and the Pazzoria is literally on the same block as my work, and for that reason I always seem to pass it over for more enticing treats farther away. I'm not sure why, because after my last visit I've been convinced that I need to stop in more often. Breakfast: great for coffee for those looking to escape the line at Starbucks and grab a full breakfast or a breakfast treats. I can personally vouch for the chocolate hazelnut scone and the chocolate croissant. Their mochas start at 3.25 and are delicious and fast. Lunch: you can get 3 salads for $8. Or two salads and a soup for also $8. Or a 1/2 sandwich and soup or salad for $6. OR soup and salad for $6. Salads also include whatever specialty dish they may have made up that day. When I stopped in, it was a potato salad with a kale pesto dressing, and oh was it good!! It also made me seriously rethink my own pesto choices with how delicious the pesto was... but anyway. I added in a spinach and fennel salad and a cream of asparagus soup. They were even kind enough to warn me that the soup had a chicken broth in case I was vegetarian. How thoughtful! The pazzoria is a great choice if you want a food-cart priced lunch but would also like to sit down and enjoy your food indoors. Dinner: nope! They close at 3 p.m. and often serve as an extra dining room for special events at Pazzo's. So if you need an afternoon pick-me-up be sure to stop in before 3, or you'll have to circle the block in disappoint like I once did. Staff: I love the guys that work here too. They're always cheerful and chatty no matter if I stop in at 8 a.m. or 2 p.m. It's a small crew, usually the same guy that takes your order will make your coffee, and another guy in back will whip up your sandwich or pizza order. Verdict: awesome little lunch spot that gets passed over far too often for less comfortable places. Great for a casual lunch and go or a quick breakfast before hitting town or the office.

$7 polpette (meatball) sandwich. Pros: Nicely toasted roll, fresh vegetables. Came out toasty all around. Con: bland. Needed acid: vinaigrette, some lemon, a tomato sauce/jam/relish, pickles... something. I added some dijon from the sidebar, and that was ok. Maybe worth a second look given the reasonable price, but I would not recommend.

LOCAL'S FAVORITE LUNCH STOP With so many food carts, it's nice to find a sit in cafe for a decent hot sandwich and refreshment at reasonable prices. Yu-go chauffeur doesn't even have to drive or sail here for his Italiano Cubano hot sandwich. While I order their daily special of a 1/2 cup of Bacon with Chard Minestra plus a half sandwich which was called Pulpetto (beef and pork meatball). The seating is designed for you to eat and go. Not read War and Peace nor re-write your resume. It's a warm feeling with white Italian tiled floor and the classy sculptured wooden based and granite topped counter. Sandwiches are made to order and they're piping hot following being pressed in a sandwich hot presser. They're ready to eat without having to consider adding any mustard or mayo. Soup was deliberately rich, concentrated in flavor and most satisfying. I much prefer this sandwich shop to the other Cubano place that's Zagat rated. Price, quality and quantity here is so much more reasonable.
(4)Cheryl S.
Back in town today after a few year absence but really enjoyed it. It was super crowded for a Saturday downtown. I had the half soup and sandwich special with a meatball sandwich and the veggie soup choice. My daughter had the pasta salad and a piece of pizza. We had excellent service in spite of the fact they were crazy busy. The place had a real family feel to it - like the customers really mattered.
(5)K W.
I got in touch with the general manager, who was extremely apologetic and gracious about the whole undisclosed allergens situation and about my having been double-charged, so bumping them up a star. I would still call ahead if you have potential food allergies, though.
(3)Ryan S.
The reason for the 5 stars... 1st-It has a very comfortable atmosphere. 2nd-Before ordering lunch the man behind the counter explained all the lunch specials. 3rd-They care about their customers, I ordered a panini without tomatoes and was immediately asked if I was allergic! 4th-My panini was slightly over cooked so I got a free cookie and was told that if I didn't like it they'd make me another one! 5th-Not only is the food great, the staff's customer service is beyond par! I'll be back soon!

Be wary of the reviewers who are actually reviewing Pazzo, the restaurant connected to this bakery. THEY ARE NOT THE SAME PLACE PEOPLE! There are no waiters here, no sit-down menus, you walk up to a counter, order and then pick up your food when it's ready. We stopped in here while on vacation and had an excellent lunch that we dreamed about until we moved here. Subsequent visits have continued to exceed our expectations. The pizza is excellent, particularly the special veggie pizza that we managed to snag a piece of right out of the oven. Their sandwiches, croissants and salads are nearly perfect and their staff is outrageously friendly. If you are looking for a quick bite or need a great loaf of bread while downtown you can't go wrong with Pazzoria. And for the love of food, please make sure you are reviewing the correct place!

Haven't been as much of a fan since the menu/management change. Went back again today to give it a second chance and was very underwhelmed. I had the peppered chicken sandwich, which had very little flavor other than the mama lil's peppers. It really just wasn't that good. On top of the flavor, my sandwich had been squished to oblivion and looked more like a fast food sandwich than anything else. There was very little substance within the sandwich too (it had maybe 1.5 tablespoons of chicken. I used to go here all the time and get a 1/2 sandwich and salad and be full for the rest of the day. That was definitely not the case today. My wife also didn't particularly enjoy her tuna melt. And for being one of the coldest weeks of the year, the sandwich "special" of cold turkey, tomato, onion and lettuce was neither appetizing or inspiring.
(3)Jason B.
Had the toscano cubano sandwich and it was awesome. We actually went into Pazzo and quickly realized it was not the sandwich and coffee shop. Pazzoria is a smaller place attached to Pazzo and is a really good deal. Check it out.
(5)Jason W.
Kevin (who I have seen there on the weekends) is the best barista I have come across in Portland. He makes the best espresso drinks I have found. This place is also great for a sandwich or some fresh baked bread. it is also great for kids. We normally bring our 1 year old with us.
(5)Meredith R.
I work a block away so I frequent this little cafe often. The 3 salad option is fantastic/ I get the tuna, bean and pasta salads usually but sometimes I substitute the special salad. I've never been disappointed. They offer a homemade cookie for a dollar extra- damn them!
(5)Vive l.
Cute interior, but a bakery that can't pull off a half-decent chocolate croissant? 'Pazzo' (crazy) indeed.
(2)Jasmine L.
AMAZINGLY DELICIOUS BAKED GOODS!!!! The irony is that I'm not a fan of the restaurant but the bakery part kicks A$$!!! I've had the croissants, brioche bread, scones and muffins - and everything here is always fresh and packed full of flavor! I was even fortunate enough one day to have the ricotta cookies with cream cheese frosting & cinnamon!!! Let me tell you, this was the MOST AMAZING cookie I've ever eaten in my life!!! It was so phenomenal that I walked back to the bakery that afternoon and had attempted to buy more - but sadly they were already sold out :( But if you haven't gone here and you love fresh-baked goods, this is a must stop and you can also get sandwiches, salads and soups too :-)
(5)Brian D.
Lovely little coffee shop/bakery-type place. Has kind of a old school Italianesque vibe. When we were there, they had a variety of croissants and cinnamon rolls out for breakfast. Both were quite tasty. The coffee was strong, roasty, and good. Lovely spot for a quick breakfast.
(4)valeria m.
Incredible lunch spot. We had the lunch menu and loved everything. The pasta was simple and very delicious. Everything had simple seasonings with incredible flavor and quality. Highly recommend it.
(5)Steve R.
This bakery is delightfully Italian with scrumptious lemon scones and cinnamon buns. Perfect for a quick breakfast.
(5)Jeremy C.
Great little bakery with pizza by the slice, soups and salads. I had eggplant parmesan, with fingerling potatoes and a coffee. Good ambiance for a cafe, pleasant service and solid offerings for lunch. The music moved this from a 4 to 5 star rating.
(5)Wayne K.
I stumbled across this place looking to get some coffee and pastries while staying at the Hotel Vintage Plaza right next door. What's nice about this cafe is that it serves the same pastries as their full-service restaurant, but you don't have to wait to be served and seated. You just go right up to the counter and order. To say the least, they had a very tasty muffin and cookie. I'll definitely be coming back. It's also a great place to just hangout for a little while if you're looking for a place with a bit more character than Starbucks.
(4)Lori F.
Pazzo has always been good to me but I never knew about its love child named Pazzoria, a tiny little café on the north side of the restaurant. During lunch today the weather was indecisive and we didn't want to risk being dumped on at the carts. I looked for downtown lunch recommendations via yelp, and Pazzoria was the winner. Pazzoria is a smallish café with tasteful decorations and a welcoming vibe. The seating is limited, so steal yourself a seat before placing your order! The menu is filled with deliciousness that includes, pannini's and pastries, soups salads and pizza by the slice. I opted for the chicken pesto sandwich and the barley mozzarella salad. The sandwich had just the right amount of shredded marinated chicken with a hint of pesto in it. The salad, was creative and filling with a subtle tang. How on earth did I overlook this little cutie for so long? It is almost so good that I don't want to tell my co-workers about it because they will show up before me, hog the pizza and steal my spot.

I really enjoyed having lunch at Pazzoria in the lovely city of Portland! It's a small lunch restaurant connected to the restaurant Pazzo, which, unfortunately, I didn't get to try. However, I did try Pazzoria and I really enjoyed it! The food here is italian deli style food: pastas, salads, sandwiches, and pizzas. I got the baby spinach salad, which I really enjoyed. It had some pine nuts and parmesan cheese on it, and it was tossed in a really tasty dressing. The pazzoria bread is also really good, it's a delicious walnut bread. The person I ate with also had some eggplant parmesan which I had a bite of and that tasted really great as well. I would definitely come to Pazzoria again if I craved some good italian food in downtown Portland! Maybe next time I'm in the city, I'll try Pazzo for dinner.
(4)Olivia T.
I'm lost. Oh wait, no this is the right place. Pazzoria from the outside looked like a bakery/pastry shop, but when you walk inside, it feels like a restaurant than a pastry shop. You need to pass tables and people that are dining in there to be able to order your pastry. The guy behind the counter was friendly and I was hoping for more pastries selection on that counter, kinda disappointed that they have more salads and regular food fixings. They put their pastries on the back shelf where it's hard to see them. Three stars for the Chocolate Croissant. It was yummy and the price is right. But then, pretty much I like anything with Chocolate on it. :).
(3)Anna S.
A few years ago I probably would have given Pazzoria 4 stars. But now, with the proliferation of astounding cart food all around, it seems a bit lackluster to me. It's my backup option for when I have no cash for the carts and I want a relatively cheap, satisfying-enough-but-not-impressive lunch. I also think their pizza is overpriced. But I DO love that their cookies are only a dollar (and welllll worth that dollar) after 2 pm (they close at 3). The cookies and brownies on their own are easily 4 star quality, and probably push the overall rating up to a 3.5 - or 3.49, to be exact; not quite good enough to round up to a 4. The laser-like precision of my tastebud-brain-conduit tells me this.
(3)Yofiffy 3.
Best economic/deliciousness ratio in downtown. Lots of lunch options - you can't go wrong with the Toscana sandwhich or pasta. Panini of the day, also solid. You should be able to get out of here for 5 to 7 bucks, no problem. Coffee is Caffe Vita. Can't recommend the espresso as prepared here, but the drip should be fine, a french roast I believe. I recently brought the some bread for a family get-together and it was a spectacularly surprising hit. Four stars for affordability, consistency, nice staff, and good ciabatta.
(4)Olivia O.
One of the absolute best downtown lunch spots. I highly recommend the puffy pillow cheese pizza, which is cheap and totally filling. Also, their pasta and meat salad is the perfect blend of creamy and savoury, and I've never even been partial to cold pasta salads. Another mind-blowing dish: the eggplant Parmesan. Crispy cheese on roasted eggplant steaks plus deep hearty tomato sauce. Yes yes yes. Pazzo also offers a variety of soups and sandwiches that will impress even the most stubborn and snooty of your foodie friends. Cauliflower cream soup. Perfectly grilled chicken paninis. You name it. I also really love their baked goods, especially their cookies. Pazzo knows how to show their customers a variety of simple dishes made out of high quality ingredients. And in my opinion you can't go wrong doing that. The service people can be a bit surly but not so much that I refuse to come here. Everything on the menu seems to wash down well with a bottle of Orangina.
(5)Erin O.
Thanks to the Wheel of Lunch, I tried this place for the first time today. Excellent! Quick, friendly, affordable, high quality ingredients. I got the daily special sandwich (today it was bean spread, roasted red pepper and eggplant on grilled rustic bread). It turned out to be exactly what I wanted, even though I hadn't known it existed. Add one more to an already very solid list of lunch options!
(5)Brent W.
This place has great cookies. I've only had a slice of pizza, but there menu looks good.
(4)Kyan H.
Consistently one of my favorite lunch spots in Portland! You get so much bang for your buck here. It's predominantly a soup/sandwich/salad spot, complete with coffee bar. Their menu changes daily; a new soup and sandwich each day. Rarely have I had anything here I didn't love. Notes: -Try the 3 salad combo plate (things like tuna salad, beet salad, pasta salad, etc.) -Usually have a daily rotating juice with some great combos (melon/mint... lavender lemonade?!) -Perhaps the best grilled cheese in town -You can buy full loaves of their bread (baked fresh daily) -Yummy morning pastries, though I much prefer them for lunch Be wary: lunch items are not out until 11:30pm and once they've sold out of an item, they're out. They can get quite the line between 12:00 - 1:00, as the business lunch crowd are frequent visitors. I'm salivating and ready for some Pazzoria.
(5)Lindsey N.
Amazing food! We tried this place because it was right next to our hotel, and I'm sure glad we did. The service was a bit lacking. When we were done with our food, we had to wait about 5-10 minutes to get our check. But it didn't affect my rating of this place.
(5)Cheyenne T.
I love this place for lunch. Good food, nice atmosphere, really nice staff. Just one suggestion for the OWNERS - PLEASE FOR THE LOVE OF GOD DO SOMETHING ABOUT THAT FRONT DOOR!!! It blows frigid air on the front 4 tables and makes it so not fun to dine in. Some of my co-workers avoid this place in the winter because it's so cold inside - they only go there in the summer.
(4)Alyssa C.
I love this place for lunch. I know everyone goes nuts over the food carts, but can you get a quinoa mozz salad with a lobster bisque soup for $6 at the food carts - with a piece of delicious fresh baked bread? No - I don't think you can! This place is awesome and a perfect stop in for a healthy, affordable lunch. They are very nice and will give you samples. I haven't had their sandwiches yet, but really enjoy this place for lunch!
(4)Devin D.
Seriously yummy! Had been craving a tuna sandwich for a while. Stopped in today and got a half (very generous) with a side potato salad (the special salad) and they were right ... except it was ALL special. YUM! I'll be back again and again, I'm sure of it.
(5)Sudipto G.
Very nice ambience, just had a cappucino since I was already full from lunch, but the sandwiches looked good, and will have to go and try them out sometime.
(3)Charles S.
Back in Portland, and Pazzoria was just as good as it was in my original review 2 1/2 years ago. My wife got a soup and 1/2 sandwich, I got a plate with three different salads. The soup. the salads, the sandwich, the bread, and the service were great. In those intervening 30 months Portland has had food truck invasion. Pazzoria has great, fresh, foodie food at food truck prices in a lovely environment where you can sit down and enjoy your meal. I used to wish DC had a place like Pazzoria. Now that I've moved to San Diego, my wish has changed: If only SD had a place like this.
(5)Samantha Q.
This is a great spot for lunch. Very casual and small. The most important thing is that the food is great. I had the pizza it was delicious.
(5)Rachel R.
Love this place for lunch, especially the lunch combo. Though if you don't get in before 1pm, you most likely will have about half the options left available on their menu to choose from.
(4)Mac M.
Stop #4 of our tour of Downtown PDX was this place. It sure had the look of a great bakery from the outside, and I was craving some pastries, so we went in. The interior was a little different than I expected; instead of highlighting the baked goods they had, they had loads of salad and veggies at the counter. This kind of spoiled the whole bakery scene, for me. Anyway, I ordered the chocolate croissant; it was pretty decent, maybe a little messy in the summer heat, because of all the choco drizzle on top, but otherwise pretty good. My advice to them is to remove the salads from the front, and put more sweetness in view. Couldn't hurt, could it?
(3)Josh W.
Great food, bought 2 sandwiches and 2 sodas for $13
(5)Duane C.
C is for COOKIE and that's good enough for me! I've had lunch at Pazzo's Ristorante next door that this joint derives its name from, and it isn't bad. However, Pazzoria for me is a destination stop for one thing. Now in all fairness I hear the pizza's, sandwiches, soups and salads available at Pazzoria are really tasty but it's their cookies that have me captivated. Hi, my name is Duane and I'm a cookie fiend. The cookies at Pazzoria are big, but not too big. They're perfectly crispy on the outside and chewy inside, but not too chewy or doughy. Another wonderful thing is that they stick to the basics. Sometimes you just don't mess with the classics. It isn't that I've never enjoyed the "nuoveau designer" cookies from other bakeries but I love the simplicity of the chocolate chip and oatmeal with raisins. If those are good then you know the person making them has uncomprimising standards that easily carry over into other creations. I can't recall if they make snickerdoodles or peanut butter but if they did I'm sure the quality lives up to that of the other two. I love picking up a cookie or two with some milk and walking over to Pioneer Square when the weather is nice. I perch myself right on one of the fountain walls overlooking the square. Cookies and milk enhance my calm and balance the atmosphere of the bustling square. As always, don't take my word for it. Go out and try the place. If you haven't ridden the Max around town in a while or ever, a visit to Pazzoria would be a perfect excuse to do so. Just be aware they shutdown at 4pm on weekdays and 3pm on weekends. A hui hou!
