FANTASTIC! I needed to find really good pan dulce for a get together with friends. I checked the Yelp reviews, and they were right -- this is THE PLACE to get authentic pan dulce in Portland! This small shop is as puro méxicano as you can get. It's a small convenience store connected to a small taco eatery. This place could have been picked up directly from Brownsville TX or Matamoros Tamps. If you're looking for anything you'd find in a Mexican convenience store, this place will have it. In particular, their pan dulce was amazing! They had every variety I've ever seen, and even introduced me to a couple I hadn't. When I got to the get together, my friends descended on the pan dulce like piranhas on a hamburger. Most of the box didn't last until after dinner -- the churros went so fast, I never even got one. :-/ You can't go wrong here. There are literally no bad choices. If you need a good selection of Mexican pastries, run (don't walk) to this place!

What everyone else said, I say too. Are all 5 de Mayo like this?

As a taqueria I give a 5. As a market, 3. Tacos are only $1.25 for all varieties. Freshly made tortillas, meat of choice, and cilantro/onion. My favorite style of simple Mexican street food. So far I've had the lengua (tongue, juicy and very hearty), al pastor (red pork, smoky and sweet), tripa (tripe, crisp and tender), cabeza (brain, meh), and azada (carne asada [steak] I presume, a little dry but browned just right on the outside). The churros remain crisp even though they're not warm and just-fried. A little sweet custardy filling inside makes it easier to eat. 3 tacos and a churro for under $5 is wonderful! There's a full salsa bar inside with red/green salsas, pico de gallo, pureed avocado, wedges of lime, and sliced radishes. The market itself has a small variety and the avocados don't look very happy. But there are plenty of tomatillos if you want to make some salsa verde. There's also lots of Mexican candy to choose from if you want to satiate your salty/spicy fix.

This place is AMAZING! I do some catering, and when I do, I have them custom bake bollilos for me (a different size than their standard). They always do them perfectly. Their pan dulce is the best I have had anywhere, and I often pick up a big box to bring to a party. A secret I hate to share because they often run out: I am in love with their "pan con jalapeños y jamon!" it's a delicious roll baked with jalapeños, cream cheese, and a touch of ham INSIDE. This might get me in trouble with my friends: I always buy one or two of these and eat them myself in the car on the way.

Used to eat here a lot, but I found out that their tortillas have some wheat flour in them. They are delicious, but I don't do wheat. Carnitas were yummy and had cueritos. My favorite.

Nice little Mexican bakery with delicious pan dulce. Nom nom nom. And all of it for such low prices! I'm sold.

Awesome food, great prices. You might have to wait a bit on the weekends. It is worth it.

I've only had the tacos, but they are the real deal. Tortillas are homemade, hot off the stove. They use queso fresco. Cilantro. No lettuce. This is the only Mexican food I've eaten in Portland that tastes like Mexico. Love it!

Probably deserves a 5 for the value, but the carnitas and pastor taco meat was a little on the dry side. Definitely more in line with the mexican street food in terms of taco size, toppings. The salsa bar is fantastic too. Even with the dry meat, this will be my go-to taqueria from now on,

Always fresh conchas! Mucho gusto taco de carnitas!

  • Stephen K.

The food is decent but really it's just too expensive. Guys before us spent $35 and what they got didn't look like a lot. Also bad quality of meat and the eating area is separated from where you order so you don't really know when your stuff is ready. The bakery stuff is great although even it is overpriced

Delicious AND authentic Mexican lunch plates. I had a huarache and my husband had three tacos. Reasonably priced at about $5-7 for most plates. Small salsa bar in the back near the seating. I wish they had a lite more searing but as we were there for a late lunch we got a table eventually. Went home with some churros, doughnuts, conchas, and a croissant. They were all delicious and fresh. I wish we lived closer so we could come more often!

Over priced!!!! Prices have changed so please check for updated prices. Waited over ten minutes for one taco with only two other orders in the Que. Think twice before coming here please!!!

My husband and I found this place on Yelp, and due to the good reviews we went. Let me tell you, they didn't fail us. I got a sope, it was actually pretty big, w/ the best al pastor meat. The al pastor had chunks of pineapple which is how they do it in Mexico. It also had avocado, vegetables, and sour cream, a salsa bar!!! I loved, loved, the red sauce. I also loved how we were able to get other random things such as Tylenol PM ;) oh- and I'm actually Mexican so I really know what's authentic and what's not, and this really is. My husband got some Carne Asada tacos and he absolutely loved them, said they were the best in town. He also loved my sope, as I couldn't finish it. We will definitely be back!

All you Oregonian's need to try real Mexican "street tacos". I cannot believe this place is rated 5 stars?? I specifically drove here because of the 5 star reviews. I ordered 2 of each taco. Pastor, Asada & Carnitas. They aren't even in the same league as the taquerias in Central California. They're not even in the same ballpark!! The asada and pastor I couldn't even tell which was which. If you are from California and know what a real taqueria should taste like, don't waste your time here. If it's the only thing you know, then have at it.

Let's get down to it. This little market is great. Good mexican products all around! I didn't have the tacos though, just the Mexican breads and other stuff. Go check it out cabron!

Hole in the wall panaderia/taqueria with amazing homemade corn tortillas. Tried the tacos with pollo, carnitas, and al pastor and they were all great. Friendly folks, cheap prices.

  • Kevin C.

Sometimes I have to wonder why they have all those good breads at price so cheap. It's not like they pick up free ingredients somewhere, I just can't believe of the price and unprecedented quality at the price point. Hell, even with the higher price I would still be coming here often. My favorites pastries are those Churros and the bread with Sweet potato, and Pumpkins. They are delicious. And about the meal, I was only able to try beef tacos and chicken quesadilla, and they are great! For like 5 or 6 bucks, I didn't expect the chicken quesadilla to be that big. I am a big guy but I couldn't finish the whole thing. Wow.

My friend and I went though a secret passage from the Springwater corridor to here. Terrorized by Milwaukie drivers for the two blocks we rode on SE 32nd, we made it unscathed to the nondescript tienda storefront. Locked up, and inside were greeted by a mexi-wonderland. It was like we were teleported to Mexico. Wonderful taco and salsas! Amazing pan dulce! "Boing, the sound of fruit!" Totally amazing. Tacos are still $1.25. Lengua and pastor were very good, and the tripas were apparently pretty good also. Piñatas, great spice selection... Don't wreck it though, ok? Let's keep it cool.

Finally I found a good taco spot this side of 82nd. Good handmade tortillas. asada=weakest of the bunch but still much better than most Pastor=hands down the best pastor I have had in this town Lengua=super tender and great beefy flavor Carnitas=super greasy and too salty Going to try the birria and barbocoa next time..... Get the pastor and the lengua!

Super cheap, decent portions, and a great bakery selection. The service is relatively speedy, too. The place has a real charm about it. It doesn't try too hard to draw customers- the people who come here are looking for good Mexican food, nothing more nothing less. What Panaderia Mexicana Cinco de Mayo lacks in atmosphere, it more than makes up for in quality. And even the get-in-get-out feel is somewhat refreshing after you've been to some of those other Portland restaurants that place ambience at a premium at the cost of good food.

This review is for their bolillos only - they were dropped at my desk as a sample so I have yet to visit (but plan on doing so soon). The bolillo was excellent, firm tasty crust but very soft center (key when using for Sonora Dogs). Cinco's bolillo was much better than the other sample I received from a different local bakery. Can't wait to check the place out in person, heard the service is great too!

I almost feel bad paying so little for the scrumptious pastries here. The churros are easily the best I've had, and probably the best pastry available. My other favorites I lovingly refer to as the "Custard Tunnel" and "Creamy Bun". I don't know what their real names are. The names I chose are pretty accurate though and pretty much describe what the pastries are like, so there! The food here is also cheap and very good for the price. The groceries are cheap as well and they carry of the necessary groceries for Mexican food. It's kind of a 3-1 pastry shop/grocery store/taqueria. I frequent this place, since I live very close.

This is one of my FAVORITE secret spots in Portland!! Well, Milwaukie actually. Not only is it the BEST Mexican Bakery in the Portland area, but it's also a great TAQUERIA. Try the chicken Huarache! For bakery items everything is great but my favorites are their conchas and churros. Not to mention they have the most incredible Tres Leches cake which you can buy by the slice, or order an entire cake for parties. Plus, it's so cheap! A MUST TRY!!

I come from southern California so Mexican food is a huge part of my taste pallet. I LOVE Panaderia because they are authentic, personal, and taste amazing. They have amazing prices, a fantastic menu selection, and are fresh.

I'll be honest, I don't know a lot about Mexican pastries and can only name and recognize a couple things on their menu, however that is soon to change, as this place has some fan freaking tastic pastries! Before trying this place I had yet to have a good experience with Mexican pastries outside of Mexico and the Southwest and I was about to give up, but I am so glad that I didn't. I have yet to try anything here that I have not loved. Aside from the awesome baked goods they have here, there also have killer tacos along with tamales, sopes, huaraches just to name a few. Did I mention that they make their own tortillas? No? Well they do and that makes all the difference. This place is as authentic as it gets and has unbelievably reasonable prices. My only complaint is that they don't live closer and that they make a very small quantity of tamales, so they can be hard to come by. This is currently my number one stop when I am craving authentic Mexican food and it has been worth the trip every time.

So my GF has a dentist app. and says she wont be home till late. So we agree to fend for ourselves. I opp to make a pb&j or order a pizza or something else unmemberable. Full belly good. About a hour later she comes home with a massive plate of mexican food. Wheres that from? I say. Shes says its from the liitle bakery that you get the Torte buns from. They have food? Yes Capt. obvious she replys. And she then informs me that its really freaking good too.And forces me to taste it. Then I Reply with a mouthful of pork Oh my this is good. Whats that place called again? And niether of us even know the name. Keep in mind Ive bought buns from the bakery @least a dozen times. Needless to say Ive been back to confirm its awsomeness. Do yourself a favor next time your in the mood for torte or a tamale or whatever to hit it up. I promise youll be stoked.

Well I was in the area today and wanted to grab some lunch and I stumbled into the bakery! All I can say is WOW!!!! What a great place! I can't say enough about the quality of food! I had some tacos, and a pieces of cake that was so moist!!! The salsa was amazing!!!! The down thing is I didn't see a spot to sit and eat, maybe it was around the corner, not sure on that one! I will be coming back soon to get some more pastries for the NEW YEAR PARTY!!!!!

Mexican Cuisine

If you enjoy Taco Tuesday, then you have officially fallen in love with the Mexican Food. The main grain of Mexican cuisine is maize. Also known as corn, maize is grown for the past 9000 years after the crop was discovered by the people in Mayan civilization. Mexican empire flourished when they started growing beans, tomatoes, chili pepper, sweet potato and cactus. Till this date these ingredients are used in cooking authentic Mexican dishes and drinks.

Great use of spices, fresh chili pepper dishes like fajitas, tortilla chips, corn chips, salsa, chimichangas, burritos, nachos and quesadillas are invented in America. But when you are looking for authentic Mexican food then you must find a restaurant in the city that serves Rajas con Queso, Garbanzo in a Guajillo Chile Sauce, Pork Filled Chiles Rellenos, Chiles en Nogada, Molcajete Salsa, Pico de Gallo and Frijoles de la Olla. An eye-opening fact – Mexican don't like their food hot. They use fresh chili and other spices to create a flavor that lingers in your mouth.

Mexican food is great for those who are Gluten Intolerant as they use Corn instead of wheat in most of their dishes. Also, you can easily find many beans based Mexican dishes. Another dish which didn't get similar glory as tacos or nachos is the Mexican hot chocolate. If you love something hot on a chilly day, then go for Mexican Hot Chocolate. On merry days, you can enjoy the authentic Mexican Drinks like Tequila, Mezcal, Tecuí, Sotol, Bacanora, Charanda, Posh O Pox, Puebla and Pulque. Mexican Cuisine is for people who enjoy strong drinks and hearty meals.
