Not sure how we found ourselves way out in everybody's favorite neighborhood, Rockwood. Well, it's because, oh never mind.... JP had eaten lunch here before, but this was my first time. It turns out that the food here is very decent. Yes, the wooden tiled floor was scuffed and it was cold when we first arrived, but after JP remarked on the chill, the gal working there turned on a nearby portable heater, and it quickly became toasty. I was starving, so in addition to the chicken oyakodon I ordered, I requested gyoza, heated endamame and panko oysters. JP ordered tempura and Artemio went with a ribeye steak "bento box". As complimentary sides, we got miso soup and salad. The salad dressing (with the same hue as 1000 island dressing) was delicious. Also stellar was Artemio's ribeye. So tender and flavorful, you would think you were feasting at Ringside Steakhouse! Actually, I'll go further and say this was the best steak I've ever had at a Japanese restaurant. The gyoza (I loved its crunchiness) was better than your average gyoza and the panko oysters were perfection. Nice dipping sauces. When JP remarked how much he liked the hot tea, our server indicated that it was a brown rice/green tea. Its flavor might remind you of shredded wheat biscuit. I liked my oyakodon (ordered from the lunch menu). The chicken (having almost a bulgolgi cut), with egg and onions, rested atop rice in a bowl. The dish was seasoned excellently. If for whatever cockamamie reason I was out here in Rockwood again at lunch or dinnertime, I would without hesitation return to Meeka. Good eats!

Hidden in a strip mall, you don't expect a lot, and if that's the case, you really won't be disappointed. However, sadly, except for the super nice service and the interesting ambiance (the only reason it's up to 3 stars), it failed to really impress me on my first visit :( Admittedly, I can't attest to their sushi; I had their chicken teri lunch special which consisted of rice (fresh/average), a generous helping of flattened chicken grilled & smothered in sweet&tangy sauce, a couple gyoza (average), and a slice of orange. Oh yeah, and unfortunately the side "salad", was disappointing TO THE MAX! Did it have iceburg lettuce that was white with a HINT of green? Yes Did it have thousand island-ish dressing? Yes, too much, actually (one savvy patron who had clearly been there before asked for the dressing on the side...a wise move) Did it have ANYTHING ELSE like tomatoes, carrots, cabbage, spinach, etc? NO!!! IT WAS THE MOST BLAND SALAD I'VE EVER HAD! But....really, who goes to a japanese restaurant for good salad, and the rest of the meal was decent for a total of $6.50ish, so I'm probably making mountains out of mole hills :P If you're in the area and don't want mexican food, this is probably your next best bet (unless you want to drive a bit farther to Yuki & Song. Teri-Town across the street might be a better bet (I'll check it out next time)

Great little sushi spot! The physical restaurant could use some touch up but the fish was fresh tasting and the server was so sweet. I got sake / salmon and tako / octopus and both were good.

Perhaps I am a bit biased having enjoyed a lot of good sushi from Vancouver, BC to Tokyo but this was not very good, especially for a coastal city. 1. Tempura was soggy and oily. 2. Service was slow with one frantic waitress covering the whole place. About 10 minutes to get acknowledged and another 15 to get our drinks. I'd forgive all that for good sushi but... 3. Nigiri was poorly prepared with pieces of varying size and thickness. Too thick yellowfin was a bit rubbery. Other pieces too big to eat properly. Knife skills might be as bad as my own when I make sushi at home. 4. Salmon not that good of quality with no sockeye or other better salmon options. So many local salmon options this is sad. Give it a miss if you like Sushi.

I've been eating here for years, and Meeka has become my go-to sushi place. Meeka slumps in the corner of decaying strip-mall, fronting miles of blighted urban sprawl. You have to drive slowing through the parking lot, mindful of speeding getaway cars - cops in hot pursuit. The big display window below the "MEEKA Sushi" sign is a landscape, behind plate glass, of rocks and Japanese tea cups, dust and cobwebs. It looks like a picnic in the aftermath of some horrible catastrophe. We always giggle and comment on its weirdness. The interior is a lovely little Japanese restaurant that is partitioned down the middle, with wooden straight-back booths on one side, and a wooden platform with sunken tables on the other. There are little pillows around and about to set on. The staff at Meeka are Japanese. They are very sweet and friendly, but English can be a little awkward for them. They do speak English, but ordering requires a fair amount of pointing and nodding, and the interpretation of specific questions and answers, on both sides, can lead to some interesting results. There is only one sushi chef at Meeka and he is an artist. His sushi is some of the best to be had in the greater Portland area.

Skeptical at first. Working with a client near the neighborhood and craving sushi. Found this place on here and thought I'd check it out and I'm glad I did. Real nice, clean place, friendly staff. Heard it might be spendy but unless I'm looking at a package of rolls at the grocery store or for sushi served on a train, one can't expect to eat for cheap. I'm personally wary of cheap sushi. Slighter selection in the vegan options but had 3 different rolls (two of the avocado roll) and cucumber salad and I'm stuffed and satisfied for under 15 bucks. Only about $6 more than one would pay at a train delivery sushi. I'll keep this place in mind.
(4)Dave S.
In a wonky location, but with some really stellar sushi, this is far and away my 'go to' sushi spot in east county. Friendly service and a surprisingly charming ambience for the space. The seared spicy tuna is a personal favorite.
(4)Todd W.
The sushi here at. Meeka's is hands down the best I've had in a long long time. I had the Tuns Sashimi, the Meeka Roll 3 and the Oregon Roll. Each one was UNIQUE, FRESH and DELICIOUS. The service was fast and friendly. The only knock I can give them is the decor is a little worn and dated but I will gladly look over that for food and service this good. BTW the prices are excellent.

TIP - To Insure Promptness. Normally, the service is very good at Meeka, but the last time we went, the waitress seemed to be very distracted and the cooks were more concerned about getting out the "to go" orders as opposed to serving the seated customers. We went on a work day at noon and there were only 3 tables with customers. The phone was ringing nonstop with people calling in orders to go. The kitchen put all of their attention into the "to go" orders while the seated customers sat and waited with nothing. I ordered the sushi, my husband ordered a hot soup dish. He got his order finally and I had to wait and wait and wait until he was almost finished eating before I got my sushi. Now I realize the chefs want to make the sushi fresh, but when there is a table of two customers, for goodness sake, at least get both dishes prepared at the same time. The order took so long it was downright rude. We left a very paltry tip for the waitress who clearly showed her displeasure. Remember what TIP means? To Insure Promptness. Why should we tip well for lousy service?
(3)Dee B.
Went here on a Friday night and noticed the place was busy, we should have known by the frowns on the other customers faces to move on, but we decided to buck up and just factor in a little longer wait. Getting food, nay service, was challenging. Food came out slowly and was ok but nothing special and some food didn't even come at all! After waiting for an hour and a half...possibly more with no sign of our entree, and unable to flag down a waitress we went to the register, corrected our check, and left. It was one of those meals that just make you feel frustrated and pissed you didn't stay home and make a PBJ sandwich.

It's not too good to be true! It's true, this place is good. Not just 'yeah it's pretty good,' but more like 'wow, this place is really good!' heck yeah! I'm so happy I found this place because the sushi is far and away the best you'll find in the area. The fish is fresh and the rolls are creative, tasty and reasonably priced. We were so impressed with Meeka that we went 2 days in a row. I drool just thinking about it.
(4)Amy M.
Meeka is my favorite sushi place in (and around) Portland. Their sushi is so fresh and always delicious. The seaweed salad and Meeka rolls are always my go-to. Their one downfall is that they take forever. All the time. If you have a lot if time to sit and enjoy, do. If not, order take-out or let them know when you order that you are in a hurry and ask for the check as soon as you get your food.
(4)Jeff D.
After moving to the culinary wasteland that is East Multnomah County, we were pleasently surpsied to find Meeka. As long time fans of Mio Sushi, there came a point when we realized that this little gem tucked into a strip malll was actually BETTER. The fish is fresh, the rolls creative and the staff friendly. On many occasion a new creation of the chef/owner (Jay) will arrive at our table and without fail it is always fantastic. Very highly recommended.
(5)Jael J.
Okay so I really wanted to give Meeka Sushi 4 stars. Their rolls are delicious. The creativity is awesome. The cuts of their meat are also pretty dang good but there's one thing that gets me EVERY time I go in and that's their timeliness. My friend and I would go there at least once a week for lunch and if we got there are 11:30, we should be asking for the check as soon as we order because from the time we ask for our check to the time we actually get cashed out is about 20 min. No joke. Let's not even include the time it takes to get the server's attention. I can't stand that! I mean the restaurant has to be EMPTY to have lunch there in under 45 min. I don't understand why they can't do better. I've been going there for a couple years and it never improves... But aside from that... Like I said, their rolls are amazing, cuts are amazing, creativity and presentation: amazing. I love that they serve you a little salad before your order. It's all great. If I could only get out of there in a fair amount of time, I would be at that place way more. Please fix that Meeka!!
(3)Rat B.
My chicken yakisoba was alright, but my date's sushi was (according to her) phenomenally good. The veggie tempura was okay but I wish I had tried the shrimp instead. The service was excellent (attentive without smothering) and the food was hot and very fresh. We will certainly be back!
(4)Dave R.
Good for where it is and what it is. Nice people, good menu, and you must try the Vegas roll made with soy wrap! Yummy!
(4)Wes A.
A nice little Japanese restaurant with friendly staff and great food. I was actually surprised at the portions of sushi that came with my order and was too full to eat all of my entrée, had to take it home with me.
(4)Daniel B.
Always kind and quality of taste is guarantee. I ask a chef what you would like to make something sushi/roll out of your mind today. If you are enough to close with chef, you don't worry about what you want to order today. I am always satisfied. And, names of some special rolls were dedicated the names of waitresses who have still served there from the beginning of business. This story is awesome.
(5)Clarkitty C.
I will list out the pro's and cons of this restaurant. PRO'S: 1. Good sushi (tasty fresh and creative) 2. Friendly staff (they actually refill your water and smile) 3. Good variety on the menu 4. Easy to find and lots of parking CONS: 1. I thought it was a bit pricey $41 for two people who didnt exactly leave full 2. Hard booths with no comfort whatsoever (I was in a car accident and cannot sit on hard benches any longer) 3. Takes a fair amount of time for them to make the food. All in all if you have allot of extra dough to blow on sushi then this really is a decent option especially considering Gresham sushi selection. But unfortunately I wont be back because I can no longer sit on hard surfaces for more than brief periods of time due to my condition.
(3)Nichole M.
My most favorite sushi place in portland. Very fresh and very delicious! Always great service.
(5)Chad S.
This is one of those rare neighborhood haunts that you don't expect to be so good. It's off the beaten path and between the more popular sushi joints in Portland and west of Gresham. The Sushi quality is great and competes spot on with other more notable sushi restaurant in the metro area. The pricing is right where it needs to be within the market. For those who complain about the cost? Go to a sushi value train of some sort...not here. The staff is very pleasant and the decor is clean and inviting. The owner and operator, Jay is actually the full time Sushi chef and his skills and experience are evident when your sushi order is presented back to you! Beyond the standard sushi menu seen in most establishments, they have a few original additions that never disappoint. This is a worthy trip to get out of your NE or West Side Hood and experience a quality neighborhood gem!
(5)Coti F.
Awesome sushi and fast service!
(4)Food V.
Great, fresh sushi. Not on a train. They take the time to actually make your order fresh. Great service and easy to find. Clean and organized. Somewhat plain ambience, but who cares i'm there for great food. You want ambience and latest trends go downtown and overpay for hipster banter and sub par sushi. Classic and regional creativity applauded here. Nice.
(5)Sky O.
Just like sushi you'd get at a grocery store. Almost every roll had imitation crab.... Yuck!!! Add the sweet japanese pop music, get me outra here!! Best part of the meal was the beer. Would rather drive the extra miles to Portland.
(1)jennifer w.
really good sushi! fresh fish and delicious combinations. amazing what you cant find in a strip mall! we waited 45 minutes for the sushi to come out. this was our first time here so i cant say if this was just a crazy night or if that is normal. ill try it again though!
(3)Elita M.
Meeka is the Best Sushi and Japanese restaurant that I've ever had the pleasure of dining at here in Portland Yet!!! The Seafood is always super Fresh and Creative! The Service is very warm, Attentive and Friendly! The beer and the Beer Glasses are always frosty cold and perfect! The specials are always so Fresh, you can almost imagine the fins still flapping! ANYONE WHO HAS GOOD TASTE AND WHO KNOWS AND CAN APPRECIATE SUPER FRESH SUSHI AND JAPANESE CUISINE, WILL ALL AGREE... MEEKA ROCKS!!
(5)James I.
My girlfriend and I went to Meeka last night, We heard about this place from a friend, and surely have seen it when we drove by this place many times. Anyway, last night we finally decided to visit this small Japanese restaurant, located in the inside corner of a desolated strip mall. Much to our surprise, the place was bigger than we thought, with 4-5 tables in Japanese-style low table, but with a hole under each table to put your legs down. My only complaint, if any, was that we were seated right in front of the door, where I can feel the cold draft whenever a customer walks in. However, the server kindly reseated us to a booth away from the door when we asked. The place was packed for mid-week, as well as many take-out customers arriving to pick up their orders. There were quite few tables with kids, and the place seems to be kid/family friendly. Now on to the food. Being a Japanese for 50 some years, I think of myself as a pretty good judge of Japanese cuisine. I always order Tempura every time I find a new Japanese restaurant, to see how well they do. Well, Meeka's Tempura shrimp was crispy and hot, as Tempura should be. I suppose the owner is Korean people, but either they have someone in the kitchen who has done Tempura elsewhere, or trained him/her very well. Agedashi-Tofu (deep-fried tofu in soy sauce-based broth) was very tasty, and I believe they are using local tofu, made in Portland. We also ordered deep-fried oysters, and they were a bit overdone, but other than that, no complaint. We finished off with Sushi and Sashimi combo. All the sushi was very good. Fish seems to be fresh, but the rice was a bit too soft and warm for my taste. However, this was my first visit, and as almost everyone was ordering sushi, perhaps the chef had to make more rice and did not have enough time to cool the rice down. Overall, the price is reasonable, and the food is good, so what can I say? The server also told me that their lunch menu is good until 4:00 PM, so if you are running late in the meeting, maybe you can go get late lunch at Meeka.
(4)Jeremy R.
My favorite sushi place on this side of town. It's a little pricey, but delicious!
(4)Jay J.
This place is very authentic in nature. My salmon was grilled perfectly. The service was very attentive. I noticed they had traditional tables where you could sit on the floor. I would return for dinner and see what that experience would be like. The panko friend shrimp were done to perfection. Overall a very delightful place hidden in a strip mall in Gresham.
(4)Bert V.
Came here with a few guys from work. We ordered a variety of sushi rolls and nigiri. The miso soup was alright, I've had better. I enjoyed all the sushi we ordered and I thought it was very good, I definitely want to come back before I leave. The best part is the prices are the cheapest I've ever seen. Maybe that's because I'm from SoCal and that's how they roll out here. Overall, i thought the sushi was good and I would definitely return!
(4)Quency H.
I found this place to be very reasonably priced. For all those that have said Meeka was expensive, remember that this place isn't delivering your sushi from a train, boat, or belt. For me anyways, no more driving all the way to Saburo's to get my Japanese food fix. Also has a great kids menu...
(4)RaShell M.
It's too bad this place got mixed reviews. I've never actually step foot in this place but I have to say the sushi platter that my mom picked up for my celebratory dinner after giving birth was by far worth the 9month wait. The hamachi, tuna and salmon were all fresh and delicious. All the rolls were yummy and quality. The presentation alone for a togo platter was beautiful and I was just all in all super excited and satisfied. It made the end of my delivery a happy one and I'll never forget. We will be visiting the restaurant in person soon.
(5)Dot T.
So my boyfriend and I were getting tired of the sushi-go-round out in Gresham, and decided to give this place a try since it's close to his house. I was a little dubious at first, since this place is tucked into the corner of a sketchy little strip mall, but was pleasantly suprised when I walked in the door. Meeka is pretty clean, but definitely has that "clearly loved" worn look to it. We ordered a raindow roll, a tempura roll, a couple pieces of sashimi and something else I can't remember.... The food came out in a reasonable amount of time, and I loved the presentation! Everthing tasted fresh, and the servings were generous. My only complaint about this place is the sake list is VERY limited, if that's something you like to accompany your sushi like me. Overall, I liekd this place and will be placing this restaurant in my regular rotation.
(4)Angie L.
Rated 5 stars for amazing service and great food! I love this place. However it is a little on the expensive side. Totally worth it to me though!
(5)Marcy H.
I have been to Meeka Sushi 3 times now. It's close enough to my work if I'm okay with a long lunch. Fairly long because the service is usually a little slow. Their food is excellent, both the sushi and the lunch combos. The prices are also very reasonable. The dining room is spit between standard booths & tables, and an area to sit on mats. My lunch group has tried every sushi place we could find close enough to our office and this place is definitely the best.
(4)Stacey P.
My friends and I have been coming to this restaurant for a few years now and we absolutely love it! It's a relaxed, quiet atmosphere, clean, the staff is very friendly and our food is always delicious. (I personally love their tempura and salmon teriyaki.) When they're busy the service can occasionally be a little slow as they have only one sushi chef and usually I've only seen two, sometimes three waitresses, but in my opinion it's worth the wait if there is one. Meeka is by far the best place for sushi and other Japanese food in Gresham!
(5)Jenell R.
One of my favorites! It looks like a hole-in-the-wall, but It's actually one of the better sushi places I've been to. I'd rank it #3 after "That Place in Sellwood" and Takahashi. Great food and great service! I LOVE the mango roll!!
(4)Candace B.
This is a quiet, attractively decorated little restaurant. My daughter and I had three sushi rolls. The Meeka roll was delicate and delicious, my daughter really liked the Oregon roll, and I loved the Rock and Roll unagi roll. The tempura was hot and crisp. We wanted a good sushi dinner and we found it. It was not the best sushi we have ever had, but it was well-done and quite satisfying, especially for the Gresham location. Our 3 sushi roll dinner for two, plus tempura, plus miso soup, cost $23, quite reasonable.
(3)Lynn M.
We drive from North Portland when we want sushi. Always consistantly delicious. Friendly staff and reasonable prices. We have been going here for over 8 years and it has never disappointed!
(5)jrthao y.
Awesome eveything!
(5)Robin J.
We love this place!
(5)Danielle D.
Great sushi...and plum wine. Starter salad is a waste of space. Last time we went, my fiancee and I both got horrible food poisoning. I can't stomache going again :(
(3)Jennifer P.
We went here for dinner one night and were pleasantly suprised at how good it is! The food was really stellar. Service was a little slow, but we weren't in a huge hurry.
(4)Wyattsmo M.
This place has THE BEST prawn tempura in town. Light and CRISPY. MMMM, so good. Their sushi is VERY fresh and delish. I have eaten here many times and not once have I been disappointed.
(5)Cami A.
This restaurant had friendly service, authentic decor and delicious sushi! My favorite was the shrimp tempura sushi, the best I have had yet. Service was a little slow because we went at lunch time and you can't rush sushi! It was worth the wait. Prices were decent as well. Very fresh and tasty!
(4)Precious C.
I went here expecting great food & I was sooo hungry. We got 4 rolls (spider, dragon, & 2 other rolls forgot the name). The crab in the roll was small & dried up. The unagi on the other rolls were also dried, it lacked the moisture that unagi should have. I think the major problem in the rolls was that the rice was so dried. Maybe the ingredient was old. I feel bad writing this 'cause the waitresses were so nice. One of the waitresses ran to get 2 plates when we asked. I felt full half way through the sushi but wanted to try something so I have something good to write about. We order an udon (shrimp tempura, chicken pieces, fish cakes & eggs in a chicken broth). This was good. I loved the broth. It has enough flavor 'cause sometimes japanese food can be too bland for me. Prob not coming back since I can find better sushi closer to home. It was a far drive from where I live. service: 4 stars food: 3 stars (for the udon that is)
(3)Matt W.
Had a bento box. Worst tempura ever, It was breaded instead of battered, and drowning in old-tasting oil. The rest was as bad in it's own even more forgettable way. Even the salad dressing was fake and disappointing. I should have left when I noticed how disgustingly dirty the place was. Deep dirt and grime all over next to their little kneeling area. Bad Japanese, I would never eat their sushi.
(1)Chris E.
Definitely not a top-notch sushi place. It'll do in a pinch and it's close to home. The miso tasted 3 days old. The udon was great. Service was very friendly, but uninformed about the menu.
(3)Krista T.
I can't say I would seek out a japanese restaurant normally, but I went with a friend and was so impressed. The unasuming strip mall store front does nothing for the food - it was SO good! The atmosphere inside is a little bland, but they do offer small booths on the left for dining japenese style - sitting on your knees sans footwear. For those interested in keeping their kicks on, there are tables and booths. The box lunch options on the menu are the way to go. Around 8$ each, it served in a compartmental tray with a choice of meat, white rice, tempura veggies and shrimp. I had the salmon that was served in a honey glaze. I can't even tell you how good it was. The tempura veggies were not thickly battered, so you could actually taste the veggies and shrimp. I am not a big fan of sushi, but I tried the spider roll. I might be converted! The service was helpful and attentive and our bill was 20 bucks!
(4)Amelia N.
Love this place, the sushi, and people. They're almost always busy but keep things moving along very well. I've been coming here since I was 8 years old and it's always been consistently delicious. VERY reasonably priced.
(5)Melissa S.
Best Japanese in Portland by far!!! Must go!! Fresh fish. Crispy tempura! I think it's pretty authentic. Closest Ive found in portland so far! Friendly and quick service.
(4)Karen E.
I'm so glad we decided to eat here tonight. I'm very sorry we've not been eating here all along. The tempura is light and crispy and the salad that's brought out complimentary has a good dressing on it. They also bring you cucumber salad as well. We opted for all sushi dinner but the Udon noodles and Yakisoba others had ordered looked great. They even have a "secret" chef's menu my husband ordered off of. My favorite roll was the mango tuna with a close second being the creamy scallops. Can't wait to come back and explore more of the menu. This is the gem of Gresham. It's also says a lot when 75% of the customers are Japanese.
(5)Stephen K.
Meeka is average at best. Honestly, it's right on par with many of the conveyor sushi establishments. If you're in the neighborhood and just HAVE to have sushi and you don't want to hassle with street parking, it's OK, but definitely not a destination location. Go to Yama or Mio if you want good sushi.
(2)Karyn H.
Odd location. But good sushi. Busy on a Tuesday night. Did mix of pieces and rolls. Fresh. Nicely cut. I had to keep asking for the order sheet back to order more. Attentive. Here's some pics.
(4)Tammie D.
The place is good food. Sadly it's dirty in there, grimy and service is very bad. since it sold in 2007 it's never been the same. Used to go once a week. Now hardly ever due to atmosphere and service. Makes you wonder if the place isn't clean, what's the kitchen like?
(2)Peter S.
Cute Japanese restaurant with delicious sushi! Haven't tried anything I hadn't like here. Deep fried sushi takes it to the next level!
(4)Beth T.
We checked out Yelp for this place before going, as we're new to the area and were looking for good food near us. Most reviews were pretty spot on in that the food is excellent but that the service is pretty bad. They'll let you make changes to the sushi rolls with a little explaining to the server, and we've been a few times now and they've made no mistakes (even with our change requests). I'd say this is a solid 4-star place. If they improved the table service it'd be the whole five!
(4)Melissa H.
This is not the first time I have been here.. My biggest pet peeve is to walk into an establishment and not be acknowledged. I stood there while the hostess looked at me and could have said I will be right with you. I turned around and walked right out..I won't be back. The sushi was just OK anyway
(1)Ophelia Y.
I came here for sushi takeout on my way out to Powell Butte to watch the sunset--since it wasn't too far, we figured we could bring some food out with us. I've been here once before, and completely forgot what it was like! You can sit on the floor like a traditional Japanese place. Kind of cool for ambiance purposes. Service was good, and fairly quick. We ordered: Portland Roll - Simple, yet delicious. Plain, but expected. Caterpillar Roll - Delicious! This was probably my favorite. Vegas Roll - Didn't keep as well for takeout since it's deep fried, but it was still really tasty. All three rolls for just under $19. AWESOME. For the price and the freshness of the fish, I'd say I'm pretty happy. I'd definitely come back if I'm ever in the area again!
(4)Francesca C.
Took 30 minutes to order some hot sake. Ordered some mackerel that was borderline rancid. The place smelled like feet because of the pile of shoes next to the booths where you are required to take off your shoes. Nothing was prepared with care or intention. I've had better sushi from Fred Meyer. Really disappointed. After having read the reviews, I was excited to have found a decent restaurant in an otherwise barren neighborhood. I guess I'll keep looking.
(1)Scott L.
Great Sushi in Rockwood?? Yes!! Look, it's not fancy and it is in a strip mall, but the fish has NEVER failed to satisfy! I've come here dozens of times, and as a frequent traveler to Japan, I know what good sushi should taste like: correctly seasoned rice, fresh and clean smelling fish, and for nigiri, appropriately sized items on the rice. These guys have it all right. And if you want to go "fusion style" there is a list of rolls to fit your palette! (Try the Meeka II roll!)
(4)Jim F.
In from out of town and found this spot on yelp just down the road from my hotel. Not much to look at inside or out. But do not let that stop you. What a little gem. Service and sushi were both excellent. Prices very reasonable. A winner I will come back to visit next time I am here.
(4)Nathan N.
Based on the reviews, we chose to drive a little off the freeway to dine here. For some reason Google Maps had it in the wrong location, but that is not their fault. We were greeted in a luke-warm fashion and placed at a table. The waitress brought us menus quickly, but that was the last time we saw them move fast. We had to ask for tea and soda three times. The food came out extremely slow. One member of our party did not receive soup with his order. Instead of explaining that his order did not come with it in a gentle way, she responded rudely. In addition, we were done eating for about 15 minutes and finally had to go ask them for the check...about ten minutes later we had it. The food was good, but I would never go there again because of the POOR service!

We had some cold tofu, a sushi combo and a fried pork chop bowl. The quality of the food was good. The breading of the pork was okay, and it didn't separate from the meat as I ate. The nigiri in the combo was fresh and good. The roll was done a bit sloppily, probably because they forgot about our combo order first and tried to hurry. The service was not the best. Our waitress was running the whole time, yet absent. After we asked about the missing sushi combo, we could see her talking to the chef and clearly they missed that order, yet she came back and lied about how long making sushi would take. We didn't get it until almost finishing other food.

Pretty little diamond in the rough. You wouldn't expect such ambiance and decor way out on 181st but this place is cute! And the sushi is tasty. I've been coming here for years-since I was in high school. Haven't been in awhile but they seem to have good business! It was busier than I'd expected but was still able to be seated immediately. Friendly staff, good food, not too spendy. If you're headed out of Portland it's worth a try!

This restaurant is a little out of the way but worth the drive. We went here with a healthy appetite and hopes to find another diamond in the rough. We were pleasantly surprised by the interesting seating and the expansive menu. The service was excellent and the sushi was amazing. Everything we ate hit the spot and we will definitely be back. This place was a win.

The sushi here was fantastic. Creative, fresh, delicious, great price, and enticing. Fairly good service, and the atmosphere is awesome. The only domestic beer was Budweiser (ugh) but other than that it was a great place for sushi.

Went here for dinner with the hubby last year. It was my turn to pick and I really wanted sushi, but didn't want to drive to downtown Portland for it. Did a search and found Meeka Japanese Restaurant to be close by to us. They are located in small strip mall on NE 181st. Inside it's nice and cozy, two traditional Japanese tables (you sit on mats at a low table) and the rest were regular tables. The place was pretty full so we ended up with a table for two right by the front door. We ordered the shrimp yakisoba, the sushi/sashimi combo A, a couple of rounds of their house hot sake, and a glass of Hakutsuru plum wine. The yakisoba was delicious, although some of the noodles were undercooked. The sushi and sashimi were fresh and good, but not phenomenal. I recall that I received rice with my entree, but my hubby didn't. Also, neither of us received the salads or miso soups. Although items of our meal were forgotten and not remedied, the experience was a-okay. We actually haven't returned since that first visit, but I would try them again.

The owner is the man in the back jamming to his music making all that incredible sushi. And he works hard back there. He also knows how to purchase top quality fish. Fresh sushi is so important. The sushi here is consistently fresh, flavorful and does not have that aftertaste or smell that comes from sushi that was not bought at its best. The size of his sashimi and his rolls are perfect, not too big but not too small. This is a small place and it is popular at peak times. You want to get your sushi on - you don't show up with the rest of the sushi eaters or - yes you are going to wait. Do you see who is back there? I just told you. He has one other sushi chef periodically. Also take note that they have lots of to go orders flying out the door at the same time. That's how good the food is. They might not have their perfect rhythm down or enough servers to feed the masses always, but if you are the impatient type just hit inbetween those times and your belly will be full of sushi and happy. And if you can be patient, just jam with his music and have a cold sake or a dark beer and chill. It's worth the wait in sushi.

First off, let me say, Im not a huge sushi lover. That being said, they have a few on the menu that I actually like and will eat when I go out with friends who love sushi. The Samurai Roll and the Meeka Roll 2 are the best choices for people who aren't into really "fishy" sushi. Just my .02. The portion size and quality of food is a 5, but the place itself is a 3 or 4. Floors are in bad need of refinishing and while I appreciate "authentic" places it would be nice if the staff spoke a little better english. It can be frustrating asking questions and communicating at times. If you like sushi you'll probably like this place overall and not be disappointed.

Sushi here is excellent. Lots of choices, but a little spendy for sushi in my opinion. Staff is nice they seat you right away. Service can be a little slow at times, even when there are not that many guests.

Who knew you can get such good sushi in Rockwood? I certainly didn't! My boyfriend has been here many times and can't stop talking about it. He finally convinced me to try this place out. This place was packed full for a Tuesday night. They have these cool seating areas with the Japanese style ground level tables. But instead of sitting criss-cross-applesauce, there is a carved out space on the floor to dangle your feet. Of course there are mats so your butts won't ache from sitting on the wood floor. Since it was a packed house with only two waitresses and one sushi chef, we had a wait a while to get our orders and food. Everyone is so friendly there, and we were served by a nice Japanese lady who helped us figure out which dish to get. It was entertaining to watch the sushi chef working and listening to his music in the back. I was quite surprised by how fresh their sushi was. Per my boyfriend, the fresh sushi has been consistent throughout his previous visits to Meeka. Though the pieces are smaller than other places (see my review for Sushi Kata), it was still savory good. We got the Sushi and Sashimi Combo A, where you get six tuna rolls and a chef's choice of sashimi (see the pics I posted). It was enough to feed the two of us, included the salad and miso soup we had for appetizers. With the Combo, we also got a bowl of rice. Interesting, since I've never been given a bowl of rice with sushi before. Best part... They even have dessert! If you are reading this, you MUST try the mochi ice cream if you've never had it. So bomb!

So I read the reviews as I always do before I go somewhere new. This place is amazing. I recommend the Alaskan roll, Vegas roll and the Boston roll. So yummy! It may be small but they are putting out a quality product.

Loved this place. Service is uneven, decor is a little off, and the chef was playing bad, Japanese rap too loud--but get over yerself. So much nom.

Out of town staying in Gresham and my girls really wantes some sushi. Found this place on this amazing app. Had some solid reviews. Always a little nervous trying a new sushi resterant. Greeted warmly when we first entered but had to wait a little bit before someone came by to get our drink order. It got pretty busy and there was just 2 ladies running the front of the house. When we got our food it was very good. Nothing mind blowing but solid sushi. We would definetly go back. Good prices also.

We love this place. Great food, fresh, fair prices, welcoming staff. Can get busy, but it's worth the wait. Nothing else like it on the outer east side of Portland. Our kids love it and my wife, who spent three months in Japan, raves. I wish they'd expand to a slightly bigger location!

The service was good, very kind and polite. Food was great. My daughter and Grandson were all very happy with quality of food.

The best sushi place in Portland. Much better than the other 4+ star rated sushi spots. You get quality sushi without the price tag. After going to Bluefin, Bamboo, & Bento plus, Meeka is far superior! I highly recommend the mango roll!

This is the first place I ever had sushi 11 years ago when I was just barely 16. To this day Meeka is still my number one choice for sushi. I have eaten sushi at just about every sushi place around the area and beyond, as well as California and Las Vegas. The rice is fresh (if you have ever eaten cheap sushi, you know the rice can be a deal breaker); the fish is ALWAYS fresh, never fishy; and the creations are delicious. I highly recommend Meeka Roll #2 and the Vegas roll. Those are the two rolls I feed to any friend who has had sushi elsewhere and is adamant that they hate sushi. Those two rolls open the door for even more delicious and crazy rolls.... like the Crazy roll, super eel roll, or the special treat of hand rolled sushi I get for myself every time I go. As for service? I love everyone who works here! Every time I visit, it is like visiting a relative. They are nice, and care for their customers. For anyone who complains about the wait... well, DUH. You are at a hidden gem for sushi. Of course it is busy, and of course there is going to be a wait when the place is packed. Look behind the counter, you will notice there is only one sushi chef. You have one guy making sushi for the entire restaurant... what more do you want? And for the deliciousness that are his creations, I will gladly wait over an hour for sushi (although that has only happened maybe twice in the 11 years I have been going there). I bought a house out in Hillsboro, and still make trips several times per month just to stuff my face with this amazing sushi. YUMMMMM. The little complimentary salad is bomb too. That dressing is tasty, not sure what they put in it (although a friend swears it is ketchup and mayo... which i tried and was horrible lol).

Just go, you won't regret it.

Whenever I visit my boyfriend we always go here for sushi. For Gresham, I think this is as good as it gets as far as freshness and authenticity. The rolls aren't too big or too crazy/Americanized with an overuse of krab mix (bento plus I'm looking at you). Their agedashi tofu is a good portion with tasty broth. Service is consistently friendly, I think they recognize us now. No it's not the most outstanding sushi you'll have in your life but for the area it's a good place to stop.

Been here several times now for lunch. Nothing amazing, but the food is always tasty, quick, reasonably priced and consistent. I will continue to come back.

Great lunchtime menu. Quick service and very friendly. Had the Vegas, Philadelphia and Lovejoy rolls. Very good! Highly recommend.

This place is so good I drive from West Linn! Can't say enough about the Japanese feel and relaxing environment. The fish is FRESH, FRESH, FRESH and portions are ample. Slightly higher than average price if you're used to conveyor belt sushi but, very much in line with other "sit down" sushi spots. Beats the hell out of the large chain restaurants. Highly recommend for a date night.

Nothing fancy, sort of run down in fact but we went for the food, not the ambiance so were happy. The sushi was excellent; Ahi (tuna) extremely fresh, veggie sushi (my daughter's a vegetarian) really nicely done and fresh and tasty. Ordered a hand roll and it was not rolled the best but the flavor was really good. The servers are VERY nice and efficient but the kitchen is slow. It seems they may have only 1 cook/chef for sushi and entrees, not sure, but if that is the case, no wonder they are soo slow. And the service was awkward, sushi order came out on 2 trays, which is fine but should have come out together, rather they came out 15 minutes apart with the wait time for the sushi 25 minutes. So it's obvious they need more help in the food prep area. Overall it's a good price for good solid Sushi and Japanese food. We'll return for sure! The servers could not be any nicer and efficient!!!

VERY good sushi for Gresham. Friendly staff, fast service. My new goto sushi spot if I am East of the 205

Meeka was recently recommended to me to try. I had recently moved into the area and was looking for a great sushi place close to home. I went and was blown away. The look and feel is wonderful. This doesn't feel like some conveyor belt joint, it doesn't feel like it's stuck in the 70's. It has a homey yet authentic look and feel to it. From the 3 booth where you can sit at floor level at traditional Japanese low tables and cushions, the subtle decor.... it feels good there. The sake selection (both hot and chilled) was very nice and the service was quick and friendly. Quick to the point of the servers actually moving at a brisk walk to a jog. The most outstanding point though was the sushi it's self. WOW! The flavor and freshness of this sushi was impeccable. Super fresh, great ingredients and combinations in a roll that I've never seen before. This may just be my fav new sushi place.

It was good. It's pretty average as far as sushi goes but the prices are nice. The Crazy Roll is a bit busy for me. And I've never found a sushi roll busy before. The miso soup was great though.

My wife and I love Meeka. We recently moved about 20 minutes away and we still make the drive to get some awesome sushi. We like comparing other sushi restaurants and we commonly use Meeka as our gold standard.
