The drinks are good, but are also really expensive compared to other places in the neighborhood. The food was also good, but expensive. The service was great, very patient and kind, quick with the food and booze.

What could and should be an awesome place to hangout, drink margaritas, munch on tacos and sit out on the sunny patio during this beautiful weather, is simply no bueno. This place is in a sweet location on West Burnside and just a few blocks from my place. It even has a parking lot which is really great and which few places in the area have. What it doesn't have is decent service. When I joined Oscar B. at his table last Sunday I sat there for a good 15 minutes before someone came around and then didn't even bother to say hola or to ask me if I wanted anything. It wasn't like they were busy or anything either as we were the only ones there. Gracias for that. Another thing that sucks is that they don't have happy hour on the weekend and the prices for the mediocre fare and crap-ass service are kinda high. I'm not feeling el amor for you Mazatlán. Should have checked the reviews before stopping in. Service is BRUTAL! 15 mins to see anyone. No refills and 20 mins for simple food. Food quality is acceptable.

I recently moved in near by this restaurant so I wanted to give it a try, but was almost scared off by the bad reviews. It was actually pretty decent! We were seated right away on a Friday evening. The portions are huge and the food was really good. You also get chips and salsa. I got the vegetarian burrito and it was delicious! They added a ton of veggies to it. I will definitely come back again. They do have happy hour which may have been from 4-6

The service here is awful. We were completely ignored for most of the time, they never brought us menus. When our drinks finally came they brought my friend the wrong drink, and the manger proceeded to argue with him about it and got upset. We canceled the order and left, it was just to uncomfortable. I will say the drinks are fairly strong, but it's hardly worth it.

After a re-union with an old friend we decided to grab dinner. Not much was open and we stumbled upon this place. I'm from Texas and have eaten at many different Mexican and Tex-Mex restaurants, this was a disappointment. It was like a step up from taco bell but much more expensive. I wouldn't say its the worst tasting Mexican food I've had, but it is the worst for the price range. I had the beef quesadilla. It tasted like it was just Cheddar cheese with some ground taco meat. I'm used to getting decent quality beef in a quesadilla and they didn't have it. As far as my friend goes, he had a burrito and thought it wasn't too bad. So there might be a redeeming aspect of this restaurant, but I won't be back. I mean its pretty fucking hard to make a bad quesadilla.

I decided to eat here before the last Timber's match because it was close to the stadium and two days before Cinco de Mayo. All of the elements in line for warranting some awesome specials, but there weren't any. The person who sat us, asked us if we wanted water, we said yes. No Water served. Then the waiter came, took our food order, asked about drinks, and we said water. Still no water served. Then a completely separate person delivered our food, and we asked for water... No water served. Saw our original waiter and asked about the water, he said, "yeah sure." Someone completely new finally served us water about 10 minutes into our meal. Then we sat there with no followup by our waiter. We had to ask another waiter walking through the area for our check. Then we took the check up to the front counter to pay and it was our original waiter on the phone ordering Tequila. I'm guessing he's the manager, trying to wear too many hats. We were served by 5 different people in a somewhat empty restaurant and no one cared enough about our table to make sure we had plenty of water. We made sure we nursed that water because it was the only water in sight. I left no tip... third time in my life that I left ZERO tip, but they deserved it. In fact, we should have been tipped to not go here. Consider this your tip.

First Meal I had in Portland I just found it by accident. We walked in and got seated soon. The food was okay but not the greatest Mexican food that I have had. I would not go again when in Portland. The waiter was great was very welcoming to the city. 1 star - "will be telling everyone to stay away" bad 2 stars - it's okay, i won't return 3 stars - it's okay, I'll come back 4 stars - it's pretty good, I'll come by again! 5 stars - it's really good, my go-to places!

They make margaritas fast and big, they don't make them strong. I didn't even know get a hint of a tequila taste. They serve free chips and salsa, but the salsa is horrible. It's like a train wreck, I couldn't help myself. If you're looking for good food around Jeld-Wen look elsewhere, anywhere. I prefer Soi9. Mazatlan service was slow and my waitress didn't even look at me in the eye when I was ordering. However, if any old place will do for a Timbers pregame meet up, then this is any old place.

Service was perfect, margaritas were great. I wish I would of been there a few minutes earlier for the happy hour margs ($5). They always have the game on(Ducks, Hawks,etc...) I just moved here from San Diego and this is exactly what I'm looking for when I want mexican food. It's not Portlandia at all. As for the chips and salsa in other reviews, I don't get the problem. They're free! Who writes a review about a restaurants bread service? I had two baskets of them. I might of had more if my burrito wasn't so big. It was a least a foot long, and as big around as my arm. Considering that I had enough for lunch the next day I'd say the prices are pretty good too.

Este lugar vale madre! ---(This place F...ING sucks!) Portions are BIG because they are full of rice and beans! and its freaking expensive. Paid $55 for Two!! We could have just gone across the street to taco bell and spent a 1/4 of that! This place blows!! I'm Mexican and this isn't authentic Mexican. Its an upper class taco bell. No carnitas?! the cockamole on my face-a-dilla was nasty!! I make better Guac at home then this crap-hole No stars for this pinchi puto lugar asqueros!! (this f ing disgusting place!!)

Timbers game tonite! That means every Restaraunt is packed, so we went to Mazatlan. Had the saltiest margerita I've ever had. The pork carnitas were an adventure. Tough, chewy and dry comes to mind. I did get great service on water refills though. Actually, service was excellent given it was game night. Food, not so much.

I disagree with most of the negative reviews. I love this place, food is always consistent. Also love that they do strong margaritas and strong daiquiris! I would say this is a standard mexican restaurant that doesn't make you pay for the chips and salsa, the spice salsa is pretty good!

I live up the street from this location and have always walked past with wonder, how bad could it be? Being from Arizona we used to eat at family-run mexican restaurants all the time so I am no stranger to fresh chips and salsa and dishes covered in cheese. We decided to stop by for some lazy patio margarita sipping on a warmer than usual Thursday afternoon. Unfortunately this place oozed sadness. The chips were meh, Juanitas at the supermarket would have been better, and the salsa was super watery and flavorless; it tasted like black pepper as if they were desperate to infuse some flavor. We went with some house margaritas for $5 during happy hour. They were OK but were definitely just bottom shelf tequila with sweet and sour mix. I know this is pretty standard for cheap drinking but most dive bar margaritas I've had were better than theirs. We ordered a quesadilla, which is $7.50 normally and $5.50 on happy hour, and it came with a scoop of browning guac and some sour cream. I don't know of any institution that charges $7.50 for 2 flour tortillas and some cheddar cheese. This is where my real gripe with Mazatlan lays- their prices. The menu had some veggie options but the veggie burrito was $13.... seriously. With the quality of ingredients they are serving I'm not sure how they think they can charge that much, $8 would be appropriate. Overall I'd pass on Mazatlan.

Just kinda stumbled upon this restaurant. I was craving Mexican food after a long day of walking and it seemed like the perfect oasis. However, the food was not that great. Honestly, I think my experience was heightened due to how hungry and tired I was, but even so, the food was sub-par. However, the service was quick and the waiters were wonderful. You get A LOT of food for your money as well (even though the leftovers aren't worth it). I'm assuming this is more of a bar than a restaurant because I was pretty disappointed. I'm never going back there.

I really don't understand why people would give this place such a bad rating, and yet taco bell gets 3.5? I've had lunch here on many occasions, and dinners as well. The waiter or waitress was always very prompt and polite. the menus are self explanatory, stereotypically every dish is rice, beans, meat, tomatoes, sour cream, cheese, tortilla, lettuce. Nothing surprising, and anything you order will be made almost exactly the same, every time you order it. CONSISTENCY is important to me. And their food is consistently delicious and filling, for a decent price. Drinks? Love'em, and the bartender makes great margaritas, pina coladas, and daquiris. And there's a somewhat narrow, but decent selection of draft brews to choose from.

Meh. Bland food that was overpriced for the content. Cha Cha Cha will be half the price and much better flavors. Nice patio overlooking Burnside. 50 cents off beers for happy-hour isn't much of a deal. I doubt i'll return.

This is one of my favorite Mexican food places and the only one my husband likes at all. They have huge portions, super good salsa and fresh warm tortilla chips they really do make there; basicly everything I have ever gotten was super yummy. My favorites are Burrito Mandero with chicken, Chicken La' Crème, Chicken Enchilladas and their fajitas are unique and yummy. My husband loves their crunchy steak taco's and flan. They use good meat, and yes, it is ridiculously fast. And if your in the mood, share a Conzuea.

I love going here. A ton of good food for a reasonable price. Quick service. Nice staff. And definitely don't skimp on the alcohol in their margaritas.

Now I'll admit this isn't the best Mexican I've ever had, it's not even in the top 10, but it's definitely not the worst. My first try with Mazatlan I tried a couple of enchiladas, one beef and one chicken, and they were pretty eh. The beef reminded me of taco bell and the rice and beans that came with it were pretty flavorless. My boyfriend convinced me to give it another shot and the second venture was much more enjoyable. The Super Burrito was massive and quite delicious. Also, the margaritas were great! I think this place is fine (just skip the ground beef), and I will be going back for another Super Burrito.

Why oh why did Red Robin pack up and move outta here? Sure RR was never gonna be mistaken for gourmet fine dining--although to our completely unsophisticated palates in the 80s, the burgers @ RR were nothing short of revolutionary. We kept going back, over and over again, so many of our simple little brains around here just couldn't get enough of their burgers and salads and, once upon a time, their macho nachos, which started sucking @ every RR I went to around the year 2000.... I kept hearing about how good their pasta dishes were for a while there as well, but I couldn't break away from my go-to salads... sprinkled generously w/their awesome and probably not very healthy seasoning salt! Another thing about this locale: RR was always a-poppin' at the stadium location. So many great memories here. Whoever came in afterward was gonna have to be pretty special to bridge the gap. To say that Mazatlan has failed in this respect, at this location, so far is readily evidenced by their lowly cume. Ever since the new kids moved in around 2008, things have changed and not for the better. Of course you can almost always count on growing pains early on in a restaurant's existence. I love Tex-Mex and have a pretty forgiving palate, but the compromises struck @ this Mazatlan---wooooo boy: greasy greasy greasy, smallish portions yet more expensive than most corollary entrees @ RR. I've had the nachos and fajitas here several times, and apparently I'm a slowwwwww learner. Their weak drinks by no means masked the deficits readily evident in the cookin'........ There's plenty of highly edible Tex Mex in the near vicinity of this Mazatlan---- I suggest Tito's burritos' up at the cart pod on 9th and Alder. Or Don Pedro's even. Much better values abound on the East and West sides. Final word: You don't have to settle for Torro Caca, baby, unless of course, that's your thing....

Standard Mexican-American, chips-on-the-table kinda establishment. Bring a box if you're a light eater. Margaritas leave something to be desired but happy hour goes late. Convenient to the stadium and good service. You know, it's exactly what you think of when you think of Mexican-American food, and better than you'd expect if you were to just judge it by its appearance.

  • Amanda W.

Yuck! I've been there twice and both times were equally disappointing. Their maragritas are watered down and way too sweet. My fiance ordered a mojito and got something blue with tequila in it. The food is equally as horrible. The only time I think I would ever return is if I was already highly intoxicated and the Taco Bell across the street was closed.

day 11 of my tour kicking it old school with portland yeeps. what are yeeps? the official name of portland yelpers. i had a blast here. the food is ok. the drinks are cheap and weak so it evens out right?? they got a lot of parking and the inside looks like a typical mexican chain restaurant. though i dunno if this place is a chain. the karaoke dj sings a lot of songs and gets paid off easily. but dammit i still had fun! i had to show them how karaoke is done though as shown in this pic. static.px.yelp.com/bphot… and of course this! youtube.com/watch?v=1H48… and how could i forget this! youtube.com/watch?v=0FCL… i had a lot of fun here. laura n has the hardest body and best moves out of any yelper i've seen. krista t is not just hot she is uber! but of all these fond memories my favorite one of pdx was when i came home and saw my parents playing cards and my dad owing my mom a 120 bucks and my mom yelling at him to pay up. priceless! update - thanks gabe wafflebunny c for one more video youtube.com/watch?v=PSr9… for your viewing pleasure!

My girlfriends and I wanted to sit outside because it was so nice out. We saw people got up from one of the table, we tried to get that table, the waiter came out and he was very rude telling us that "Senioritas at the bar were waiting for this table" and he told us to got up. Well, first of all there's no hostess by the door and there's no sign up sheet, NO ONE greeted us at the door and we waited about seven minutes before we proceeded to that table. We were debating if we wanted to walk all the way to 23rd or just stay here. We had one little girl with us, so we decided to stay. I ordered the green chile pork burrito with beans and rice. It wasn't the best Mexican food I've ever had and for $9.50 I think next time I rather run across the street to Taco Hell. The service was so so, waited for a while for water refill. After we ate here, my girlfriend and I were so thirsty, we had about 3 drinks so we came to conclusion they might use MSG. Anyway, so long Mazatlan, I will never come back.

I'm such a softy that I almost never dole out just a single star, but the only thing that even gets Mazatlan its one star is their excellent and friendly service. The drinks are overwhelmingly sweet and the tequila is terrible. The one dish we tried (nachos) should have been decently prepared since it is a "mexican" restaurant, but they were soggy, sad, and tasteless. The restaurant itself is a step-up from scuzzy (but not a huge step up). And the man running karaoke could be bought with cash - which is cheap and classless. Of course the one star doesn't mean I didn't have a great time, because I did, but I'm going to have to credit my fun evening to my entertaining Yelp friends who were out for fun in full force and not to Mazatlan.

Last night, I told Alec that this place was getting two stars for my review, so I'm sticking with that. I had an AWESOME, AMAZING, RIOTOUS time at karaoke, however, take that away, and there's not much. The nachos looked pretty soggy and waxed over...while I appreciated the alcoholic beverages, the margaritas were syrupy sweet and didn't come with enough salt. No obligatory chips and salsa were had or even offered for our huge table of singin' Yeeps, and the karaoke stage was set in a weird place between the bar and the bathroom.... Also, you know it's class when they've got a Corona-bottle lamp. Yee-haw! I've been to Mazatlan restaurants before, but it seems like the food quality has consistently gone down over the years. However, I'd def. go back for another round of karaoke.

So, in my book there's like 30 different kinds of "bad" (yes, its sort of like Dante's circles of hell): There's like kinda bad, but I'll get over it And Micheal Jackson (when he was young and cool) Bad, and then also Micheal Jackson scary, crazy, bad And then so bad its good And also real bad (I use this one the most I'd say) And so on and so on.... And I was trying to think of which ones to use to describe Mazatlan and I think the answer is: all of em. The margaritas are real bad - hummingbird food anyone? But the waiters are only kinda bad - they did bring me an extra shot with said bad margarita when I asked for it (but were otherwise invisible). The Karaoke is more than so-bad-its-good, its actually more like so-bad-its-THEBESTEVER! The karaoke DJ actually gets up and sings like he's the Creed frontman and sometimes he duets with his gf and they hold hands. For reals! They have over a 100,000 including greats like Ashlee Simpson (tacky bad) and Bonnie Tyler (you know you love it bad). They even have a karaoke stage so you can feel like the rock star that you know you are when belting out Pieces of Me. Its so cool. The patrons can seem a little Micheal Jackson scary bad, as they smoke and make grimacing faces wile your friend does an interpretive dance as you sing Total Eclipse of the Heart. The atmosphere is just icky bad: plastic booths and orange stucco. Bleh. Mazatlan isn't bad if you ignore the watery margy's, go up to the bar to order (i/o waiting on the waiter) and bring your friends that love karaoke more than a good night's sleep.

I was able to enjoy a pretty decent margarita at an affordable Happy Hour price of $5.00 and a so-so chile relleno. At least the server was pleasant and attentive. My food and drink came quickly and the margarita was strong. I only wish that the outside seating did not face Burnside traffic. Oh well!

Oh I don't want to sound like the others and rag on this place but let's be honest..... It's shit! The place isn't worth one star let alone two but I enjoyed my time there with my gal so it couldn't be all that bad. Service was ok, the "food" came quickly, and so did the check. Aa it should have because we were like the only ones their on a Saturday night. So I will continue my tireless such for decant Mexican food in the city or roses.

Disgusting. The place was pretty much empty and we were the only table at 1pm on a Tuesday, but we could never get the beers we ordered. My friend ordered the beef burrito and had one bite. The beef was the same style as from Taco Bell across the street. My nachos were smothered in that cheese sauce they sell in gallon cans at Costco. And the price for this experience was entirely too much. We would have been better off eating Taco Bell and drinking beers in the Taco Bell parking lot. I doubt I could get drunk enough to ever decide to go eat here again.

Don't blame it on the sunshine. Don't blame it on the moonlight. Don't blame it on the good times. Blame it on the boogie. Karaoke is the only redeeming value of this venue -- yet it keeps me coming back again and again. The karaoke rocks the casa on both Thursday and Saturday night, and supplied with a large margarita and a hot batch of chips, I say "A-OK." To review: Sunshine? Moonlight? Good Times? BOOGIE.

(yuck) squared I swear they ran out of food and walked across the street to taco bell to refill their kitchen. The food was EXACTLY what taco bell serves...only more expensive. The margaritas were so watered down that I had 3 and felt the same as if never had any. The salsa sucked. More like salsa from a jar that you get at the supermarket. I watched people eat their taco bell tacos across the street and I was jealous. What a waste of an evening,

Hit the spot- we were starving and craving Mexican food.... thanks Yelpers for stating 'big portions' and 'so fast it's almost annoying'!! We walked in, ordered, ate and we were walking out within an hour. Perfect. So satisfied!

I went here once and it was acceptable. It's a generic Mexican restaurant with large portions. There's nothing trendy about the food and nothing at all special about how it tastes. At the same time it was all perfectly edible and didn't seem outrageously priced. If I'm craving generic Mexican and want something a little better than Taco Bell (conveniently located across the street) then I'd go here again, but otherwise there are lots of other places that would better fit the bill.

    (3)
  • Amanda W.

  • Elizabeth E.

Oh well!

  • Dude D.

I like the location and ambiance at this particular restaurant. The service was very friendly, the food was good and came very fast. They even do karaoke on Thursday and Saturday nights. The place was not packed when I was there, and I was eating alone. I could really see the potential for fun if you had a large group of people. I am not sure when is a good time to go (when there are lot's of people) or if it a good place to go if you are alone? However, if you are hungry and craving Mexican food, then this is a good place to go.

Too bad Yelp won't let me post this with 0 or negative stars. I really wanted to like this place. I love Mexican food, and have actually been to several of the other Mazatlan restaurants in other areas of town. Unfortunately, this place was one of the worst I have ever been to. EVER. Mexican food, or otherwise...and that includes places I went to in Mexico! It started out because we had a group that had reservations (made over two weeks ahead). First off, I have a handicap pass. But some jerk was parked, not in a parking spot, but next to it, illegally blocking the handicap parking. When I told the management about it, they said it was an employee and they couldn't (or wouldn't?) get him to move the vehicle. The place was not busy when I got there, but nothing had been set up. So that took a little time to have them set the tables and such up. Not a big deal, really. Could happen anywhere, and I was about 20 minutes early. But then, even tho I told them more people would not be showing up for about 20 minutes, they still laid out all the chips and salsa. When I told them again to please wait until for just a little bit, so people would have fresh salsa and ships, the girls (I kid not!) ROLLED THEIR EYES and said, "whatever"! I couldn't believe it! About 15 minutes later, the rest of our party showed up and was seated. But service was terribly slow. So slow, in fact, that one of us had to go find a manager to have them come back and take our orders, refill drinks, or bring us the check, not once, but three times. The excuse our server gave was that 'he didn't want to disturb us'. What a load of bull. We go to a lot of places as a group, always tip well (we know what a lot of work serving a large group can be) and have never had so many problems as we did here! To top off the evening, we had coupons printed from their website. My check came to $28, then I had a $5 off coupon. But when they brought my card and charge slip back, it suddenly read as $34!! When I complained, the waiter was rude, took over 10 minutes to get it corrected (which I had to go to the bar to do), and then tried to say I couldn't use the coupon because someone else at our table had used one! Even tho we had told them right up front, when ordering that we all were separate checks and using coupons, which they said would be no problemo. One of our other persons complained and the waiter actually physically THREW her change at her! In all, it was a horrible meal, horrible experience and they lost at least 20 customers (those of us that were there all vowed we would NEVER go back!). If I could give this place negative amount of stars, I would!

I love this place! The patio is awesome for people watching and the staff is super friendly and funny. The mexican food is ok---it's typical of large-chainish mexican food---but i still thinks its the best mexican food the northwest has to offer.

To start off they're incredibly nice, sitting outside wasn't a challenge (even on the day of a Timbers game!), and they kept the chips and salsa flowing with a regularity that goes a long way in explaining the need for a little loosening of the belt the following day. Perhaps it was the fact that I ordered the Sopa de Siete Mares, but my trip to Mazatlan Mexican Restaurant turned out to have a much more nautical theme than I would have anticipated. In what may be a first, the soup they brought actually contained WAY more seafood than soup (hurrah!), however the soup was seasoned in a fashion that had me less saying "mm! tasty broth!" and more saying "y'arr the salty brine o the seven seas!. I'd recommend it as a nice place to chill before (or after) a Timbers match, but it's on that list of restaurants that is a great place to visit as long as you avoid the food.

  • Suzannah P.

Night of a Timbers game, place was packed. Very poor lighting, so dimly lit you could barely read the menu. Place was about 80 degrees inside, just ridiculously hot. Had the tacos pastor. Unimpressed. Basically old pork that they threw some sauce and spices on to perk it up. Poor grade of meat. Lots of cartilage in my pork. Friend had the pork carnitas, basically pork jerky. Had to take a sip of water with every bite to get it down. found a few bones, cartilage as well as quite a bit of belly fat. Definitely a bummer they don't do a better job with quality control. House margarita was served in a hot glass, made for a less than desirable beverage. This choice was made off of convenience, not because we were craving Mexican. Won't be back.

I'm giving them 2 stars because of the service not the food. Despite how busy it was the waitress and staff stayed on top of making sure we got our food and drinks in a timely manner. However, the food and drink situation was a train wreck. Wasn't sure the drinks had any alcohol in them, the food was what I call "sketchy" and poorly done. Had ceviche that was unbelievably bland, the free salsa was terrible, and the quesadilla wasn't great either. Pretty sure I'll stick to the dive bars around there for food and drink from here on out.

I was there about a week ago with a friend who said they had REALLY good enchiladas--but not being a big fan of plain enchiladas I decided to try some tacos. Simple ground beef(picadillo) tacos, which cost just over $10 w/ rice+beans. As our food came out, no real delay in receiving it, I saw the 3 tacos were on corn tortillas, which I'm not a big fan of, as they are usually flimsy, and get spongy when the taco meat is greasy(which it was). Taking the first bite of the 1st of 3 tacos the beef(if you could call it that) had little appeal, hardly any flavor(making TACO BELL's taste better), and the consistency and texture was just gritty, gross, pasty and like canned dog/cat food. I made myself eat 2 of the tacos, leaving the 3rd. My friend sampled a bit of the beef for himself and agreed it was barely a grade above pet food. NOT worth the $10+....and if you consider there are GREAT Mexican food carts all around Portland, including one a few blocks from my house near MALL 205 where I can get 3 GREAT steak tacos, rice, beans--(for $5 TOTAL)--I wasn't happy. The server was a great guy, real friendly, and the place was nice otherwise--but I really enjoy a good Mexican restaurant, and look forward to having a GREAT meal for $10+. I could've ordered steak instead of ground beef--but it would've been another $4!? AGAIN, I can go to a Food Cart and spend less than half of that, and KNOW I'm not gonna get a soggy tortilla with dog food-level "beef" inside. BAD food, and being my first time, and having a system that doesn't do "experimenting" too much with spicier foods, I don't know if another trip would be worth it.

Hi. Was hoping to grab a late hangover dinner....at Acapulo's Gold in NW. Well, they were unexpectedly closed. Since we were so set on Mexican and in NW---I remembered Mazatlan coming to the rescue once before. Needs satisfied....good service, typical Mazatlan, American/Mexican fare. Giant Dos Equis-my beer was a little warm, but my friend's temperature was fine. Oh well. Leftovers 6 days later were the best! Tasted better than the actual, initial meal. Their menu-huge, TVs for easy viewing of another Blazer loss, plenty of folks for a Christmas Eve, Eve, evening. Thanks for being open. Will re-acquaint myself again for summer Margaritas.

I ordered from this place on Friday for lunch and I can tell you this...I ordered 3 different item and none of the items that I order was good at all. I ordered their steak picato?, one enchilada, and 2 carne asada tacos. I was super hungry and started off with the steak plate. I asked the waiter on the phone that I wanted a combo plate that had steak, rice and beans. He gave me a plate of rice, beans and steak with some tasteless sauce all over my steak. The enchilada was dry and my tacos had chunks of hard pieces of steak (idk what was in there). Taco bell would have been a better choice than going to this place. Everything I ordered was flavorless and just not good. I wish I read these reviews before I ordered. Will not be returning to this location.

I see Mazatlan has added a new sign done in shades of blue. It's a huge improvement over the old sign which was faded to almost nothing and quite decrepit. The new sign lets potential customers know that Mazatlan is open for business and ready for customers.

I've lived in the neighborhood for about 5 years and can say that Mazatlan has never failed me. The waitstaff is very friendly, the food comes out right away and is always delicious and the margaritas are really strong. I read one review that said the drinks are weak - whoa, unless you want straight tequila, I can't see how the drinks could be stiffer. Another person criticized the salsa but I think the salsa is pretty basic and frankly I enjoy it. Mazatlan is not fine dining, nor a super foodie experience, but it is a solid restaurant with staple food and good service. No complaints here.

The location is prime and they have a great big patio with tents for sun and rain. The patio is noisy but the location is great. They even allow smokers to smoke on half of the patio. On the bright side, they made a great margarita and the servers were exceptionally nice! But here it goes... they had the worst salsa I've ever tasted (then again the chips and salsa were free). This was not salsa to me...more like strained tomato liquid, watered down with hot sauce added. If something like a salsa is presented to every customer in the restaurant, it should be something you're really proud to serve. I couldn't eat it on my chips, it tasted so strange...almost rancid. I hope this is taken as constructive criticism. They could do so much better. My chicken tacos were bland but would have been great with some good salsa on them. I will go back for margaritas though. Sorry Mazatlan.

I only go here occasionally before Timbers games. Places like this are pretty generic and predictable as far as the food goes. It's essentially meat with beans and rice with tomatoes and sour cream. Whether it's wrapped in a tortilla, fried in a tortilla, or open face on maybe a smaller tortilla, it's all kinda the same. I was in the mood for something citrusy before the game the other day. I must say, I do recommend their sangria! Only $5 and it's very good and you can taste all the flavors and that it's homemade.

The location is amazing, the food is terrible. The margaritas are lacking alcohol. The chips and salsa which seem to be a basic staple of any Mexican restaurant was some of the worst I've had.

Fantastic food and great margaritas. Staff is always friendly and service is quick. Luis in particular is a favorite. He is so nice and takes time to talk to us and say hello to the kids. Very cool.

I was weary about eating here last night after i read the reviews. However we were meeting a group of ten and it was planned to have dinner here. I must say the service was very good. Not only was our waiter very on top of things he also offered to be our photographer and babysitter during the dinner. Food was very good. We were all very pleased and will definately return!

Seriously don't understand how people can complain about the service here. Other than the waiter yelling "gimme that!" at my plate when I had finished boxing my food, which was just funny, this place is very cordial. I went here on Mother's Day with my sister and father, a divorcee of two years, and we observed people celebrating, drinking margaritas, and having overall fun with one another in the sunny patio room. I've been here plenty of times before and always value the complimentary chips that come with the menus. This is a custom many of Portland's less-deserving-of-the-title-"Mexican Food" Mexican Food Restaurants do not observe. I'm would like to use this sentence to call out Cha! Cha! Cha! and Los Gorditos for this type of ignorance. Anyway, chips are hot and oily and not dry and white like many other places. The salsa is actually very hot too (spiciness not temp) but a bit watery. This was the first time I noticed this though, probably because in the past, I was distracted by my gratitude toward the chips and salsa just being free. My friend and I went here once and he said at Mazatlan he felt comfortable as someone who doesn't necessarily eat for taste but enjoys the act of eating. With that being said, there's no way I could finish a whole burrito from here. I ordered the vegetarian one that looked kind of like a model of a small hill on a plate covered in guacamole, lettuce, cheese, and sour cream. For anyone to eat this with their hands would be so perverse and unacceptable to do in public, they'd have to be willing to face social ostracization forever afterward. Seriously do not get near me with this in your hands. You will note in my photo "share" I used the panorama feature just to make a small joke about the size. The burrito was filled and also may be covered with rice, beans, bell peppers, mushrooms (fortunately!), and carrots (unfortunately). While this is far from how I normally would prefer to eat a burrito - the ingredients themselves taste fine and the burrito is not advertised as "wet" which is very respectful. When I re-heated it this morning as just a brown and yellow mound, it retained one indiscernible "left-overs" flavor. This was not a bad thing, and actually preferred to what I normally eat for breakfast. Do not listen to any disgruntled Timbers fans about the service, nor their judgement on anything outside of these reviews. Mazatlan is a great place for families and testing your stomach volume because the food and folks will always want to turn it up.

6:00pm on a Thursday. Pros: portion sizes are great for the price. Cons: food was mediocre, dry, and bland. Service was also bad. If I could give this zero stars, I would... Went in with my mom, ordered the chicken Diablo to share.. - the sauce was obviously made with mostly ketchup - the chicken was rotten, I was throwing up when I got home, my mom was sick the next day too - the server tried to argue with us, when it was so completely obvious that the chicken was rotten, it was so disgusting -they need to be inspected thoroughly by the health department -do not eat here and if you must, do not order anything with meat in it

The chicken really is rotten. I have never tasted meat that bad in my entire life. I don't know how they could have used it because it must have smelled as bad as it tasted. If you've ever thrown away a container from fresh chicken or thrown raw chicken scraps in the trash and let them sit for a week or more, well the meat tasted like that smell. And the sauce on the chicken Diablo really is bad and tasted like ketchup with a few sliced onions thrown in. It is obvious that this place is having to cut corners.

Our party tried several different things on the menu and we all we very disappointed. Nothing stood out at all. Staff was friendly and attentive. Don't waste your money here.

I see Mazatlan has added a new sign done in shades of blue. It's a huge improvement over the old sign which was faded to almost nothing and quite decrepit. The new sign lets potential customers know that Mazatlan is open for business and ready for customers.

American-Mexican food. Not excellent, not bad, just so-so. I think it's overpriced for what it is. Dinner for two ended up being about $25 plus tip. I would have been happier at a taco-truck.

Moonlight? Good Times? BOOGIE.

The food is great and the atmosphere is most welcome ! They sing happy birthday to me! And give me a dessert free. ;-)

  • Charles R.

The location is amazing, the food is terrible. The margaritas are lacking alcohol. The chips and salsa which seem to be a basic staple of any Mexican restaurant was some of the worst I've had. Our party tried several different things on the menu and we all we very disappointed. Nothing stood out at all. Staff was friendly and attentive. Don't waste your money here.

    (1)
  • Steve M.

  • Raynaldo M.

  • Melvin T.

  • Taylor H.

I disagree with most of the negative reviews. I love this place, food is always consistent. Also love that they do strong margaritas and strong daiquiris! I would say this is a standard mexican restaurant that doesn't make you pay for the chips and salsa, the spice salsa is pretty good!

  • Jonny S.

This place is situated right on Burnside so I wasn't expecting much. However, the food was excellent, the staff was warm and accommodating, and the guava margarita was delicious.

  • Lea W.

    (1)
  • Barbara D.

  • Amanda G.

Great low key spot. Service has always been stellar and food is yum as long as you know what to order (shredded beef enchiladas or burritos)

  • Tristan T.

    (3)
  • Amanda W.

  • Elizabeth E.

  • Danielle K.

    (2)
  • Forrest H.

Mexican Cuisine

If you enjoy Taco Tuesday, then you have officially fallen in love with the Mexican Food. The main grain of Mexican cuisine is maize. Also known as corn, maize is grown for the past 9000 years after the crop was discovered by the people in Mayan civilization. Mexican empire flourished when they started growing beans, tomatoes, chili pepper, sweet potato and cactus. Till this date these ingredients are used in cooking authentic Mexican dishes and drinks.

Great use of spices, fresh chili pepper dishes like fajitas, tortilla chips, corn chips, salsa, chimichangas, burritos, nachos and quesadillas are invented in America. But when you are looking for authentic Mexican food then you must find a restaurant in the city that serves Rajas con Queso, Garbanzo in a Guajillo Chile Sauce, Pork Filled Chiles Rellenos, Chiles en Nogada, Molcajete Salsa, Pico de Gallo and Frijoles de la Olla. An eye-opening fact – Mexican don't like their food hot. They use fresh chili and other spices to create a flavor that lingers in your mouth.

Mexican food is great for those who are Gluten Intolerant as they use Corn instead of wheat in most of their dishes. Also, you can easily find many beans based Mexican dishes. Another dish which didn't get similar glory as tacos or nachos is the Mexican hot chocolate. If you love something hot on a chilly day, then go for Mexican Hot Chocolate. On merry days, you can enjoy the authentic Mexican Drinks like Tequila, Mezcal, Tecuí, Sotol, Bacanora, Charanda, Posh O Pox, Puebla and Pulque. Mexican Cuisine is for people who enjoy strong drinks and hearty meals.
