After a failed attempt to get into a few clubs in Portland I found solace in this place. It had The Thing on the TV (followed by Fast Times), two pinball machines, a jukebox with some serious deep cuts, and a fun, relaxed atmosphere. This place was heaven for a few hours and maybe it'll treat you well too.

This place is a superb venue for live music. Itcan be a bit crowded and there's dancing folks in your way when you have to hit the head. But if you're seeing a good, fun danceable band like Kris DeLane and the Hurt, then you deserve it and you're happy the folks are dancing! Don't know what took me so long to check this place out. But I'm glad I did. Cover charge was $8 - not too bad. Beers were reasonable. Smoking tables outside and around the corner. Nice staff! I will surely be back to try the food and check out some more live music!

Gotta say, happy hr with giant love (Wednesday night) was amaze balls. Great lead singer, amaaaaazing vocals. Love the ambience of the space, good cider on tap, easy parking. Nachos ok. Very nice neighborhood feeling and diverse crowd.

Great inexpensive place for live music and microbrews! The atmosphere is of small neighborhood pub, not a dive bar. The live music was bluegrass type stuff, and the talent was impressive (and no cover charge, so tip the band). There was also an old hippie doing some kind of psychedelic dancing, which was entertaining in itself. The menu was small, but I got a delicious Reuben and tomatoe cheese soup for only $9. The beers on tap are awesome, and I got the Rasputin Stout ($4.50) which was an impressive 9%ABV and great tasting. I would definitely come back and suggest you visit this place. It's reasonably priced, clean, and friendly. Just make sure to get there before 6 to get a good seat.

Great inexpensive place for live music on Thursday nights and an eclectic crowd. A lot of single people there. It was a nice local little restaurant/bar. I am not sure I'd eat there, but they had a good selection of beers/drinks. I had the Orange Peel beer and it was pretty tasty. It got a bit crowded but a good experience overall. :)

Classic bar with plenty on draft! Great food, great atmosphere, and great music. Perfect place to meet friends for a pint and interesting music. Best of all - a place in Portland that doesn't judge for ordering other beer besides a local microbrew!

Cheap booze, good live music, friendly people. I will be back, especially for their bluegrass!

This place is phenomenal. Free live music on many nights (Mondays are exceptionally great), great beer selection at manageable prices, nice and normal bartenders, good atmosphere, decent food. Totally unpretentious. Makes the list.

Went to go see some live music tonight. The two last bands were great. The staff was unhelpful from the doer to the bartender to the manager. They charged a cover, but did not stamp hands, so if you used a different doer that was another five bucks, or stepped outside for a smoke ext. The bartenders were rude and disregarded the cue forming. A few smaller music goers were pushed out of the way so the manager could berate the final act for being too loud. of course noise levels must be respected, the act had only finished their first song, and the wording and tone the manger chose killed a good calm vibe in the crowd. :(

Awesome local live music bar! I am pretty certain that they have music here literally every single night of the week ranging from free to $10 cover. Great beer selection on tap. Good bar food. Great crowd and friendly staff!

This is my favorite and most haunted bar in Portland. Great beers in tap, excellent free to cheap music every day of the week and a hippie stronghold that has no pretentious bullshit that other more hipster bars in PDX might offer. Super friendly and everybody dances. It would take an act of Congress to keep me out of this place.

This was my first visit to this local iconic live music and food and drink venue,.,,now celebrating its 25th year. I'm starting to become more familiar with the local music scene in PDX and this venue supports some of the best local artists.... .Although a small stage and rather narrow make up, the acoustics are acceptable and ( saw the local indi/Americana artist Little Sue) people seem to take up every inch of space to enjoy ....which include some pretty creative dancing moves. You get the feeling everyone knows each other , the band, the patrons, the staff. its one big happy family feel . A very nice beer and cider selection...and frankly for this review that's all I can speak to. However, I've heard good things about the food ( New American Pub Style) and certainly based on my initial impression I'll be back. Portland takes the support of live/organic music seriously...and this is a great little venue to showcase some talented, hardworking local players. Suggest you frequent their website to check out their live music schedule...be prepared to become family and if only awkwardly...do some free form dancing. ..

This is a GREAT little bar for a nice beer selection, excellent music, and dancing if you are so inclined. My favorite nights are Sunday for Freak Mountain Ramblers (are they called something else now?) and Portland Country Underground on monday nights. Sooo much great music, and always a great crowd. If you find yourself needing some excitement on a weeknight (or any night), this is the place to go. No pretensions, good music, good people. See y'all there.

I honestly don't know why I don't come here more often. It is just one of those places that I always talk about going to, but for some reason don't. That changed the other day as I came here for the first time in years. Laurelthirst was one of the first places I ever came to in Portland. That was well before I was a Yelper. After going to the dog park with my friend and his dog on Saturday we decided to get some lunch. Having a dog with us narrowed our choices of where to eat. The first place we tried (which shall remain nameless) didn't allow dogs. I suggested Laurelthirst as I knew they had tables out front. Once there we secured a table outside. The place was pretty empty in the early afternoon part of Saturday, so it wasn't too difficult to secure a table. The menu mostly consists of sandwiches and salads which was fine by us. Very affordable as well. I had the Turkey Thirst sandwich which had grilled turkey, onions, mushrooms and swiss with mayo, dijon and tomato on 6" roll. Obviously I got it without mayo. I probably don't need to tell my readers this anymore. The sandwich comes with a choice of chips, homemade potato salad, cup of soup or house salad on the side. I had the house salad with vinaigrette dressing. Wasn't sure what to expect of this sandwich, but it was quite tasty. I don't think the turkey was deli turkey. It was thicker. Not saying they have a whole turkey in the back they are cutting up for sandwiches, but it certainly tasted better than deli turkey. Love onions and mushrooms with this sandwich. Nice combo. Good service and a good setting make the Laurelthirst a must come back to. Hopefully it won't be years before I take my own advice.

Used to catch my bus from this place.. used to miss it a lot too. Oh there it goes. Well I guess I'll have me another drink then. Forward many years later.. this place looks pretty much like it used to, especially on the inside.. and kind of has that old tavern smell.. but that's ok some days. I was bold and asked the guy behind the counter to make us a couple of martinis. He looked at me like I was telling him to bake me a cake. Yet he was so cool about it at the same time, and managed to pull it off. I could hear him back there trying to find the shaker, and get the lemon peel cut just right.. He even found his martini glasses. And they were not too shabby either.

The veggie burger was dry. I had to put my whole salad in it with the pickle, and another it with ketchup for it to taste good. After that it wAs good, but I have to admit that I was pretty faded, so most things would have tasted awesome. The burger was kind of lackluster. They have a nice beer list tho. There was a band playing, and they asked for a cover charge or we couldn't stay. I forgot who the band was, but I heard them setting up, and I liked the music they played before better. It's cool this place has veggie options. It's too bad the one I went with wasn't very good. They are also kind of expensive... If the food were awesome I wouldn't mind paying 8$ for a burger. Idk tho. Probably won't eat here again, cuz why? So many places in ptown to eat good food. I can see myself going in for a drink tho.

This is a small divey bar for live music. They have two bands a night, one at happy hour 6pm and then a second at 9. Most have no cover. They have a good selection of beers on tap. They have large hot sandwiches which are loaded with cheese, butter, bacon etc. My fav food item is their potato salad. A good beer, potato salad, and some live free music; there's your night.

I went for Saturday brunch. It was just ok. I think this place is more of an evening entertainment place. Tons of beer on tap, little stage area for live music and a great dive bar feel. I tried, I didn't hate it, I just won't go back for breakfast.

Frickin Fantastic fun each time I see my friends Windy and Steve, they lure me to a new dive or Pub where Windy sings the best of Fleetwood Mac and Stevie Nics ballads! They had a plethora of brews and friendly and smiley bartenders. It was a tiny bar for the crowd that showed up, but I will try their food next time. I will see another band any day!

Visited LPH right after my steam room session at Common Ground Everett House a couple of blocks away - in need of hydration. Country Boy IPA did the trick. Recommended by the friendly, neighborhood bartender from amongst the 3 IPAs on tap, I'm glad I tried it. Brewed by Everybody's Brewing in White Salmon WA (a skip across the Mighty Columbia from Hood River), I'll be looking for this offering. I also had a BLT which, despite those pale things that pass for winter tomatoes, was very tasty. The pickle spear (these things are big for me) was excellent. Also some killer potato salad. When I first contemplated this review I was thinking 4 stars. I mean, I wasn't blown away. But when I put it into perspective - what do I want from a kitschy neighborhood pub? - I couldn't think of any reason to dock a star.

Laurelthirst Public House offers a cozy and delicious option for breakfast on the weekend! Not being a big drinker, I'm often not inclined to go to places that look like bars. Laurelthirst, however, got good reviews on Yelp for breakfast/brunch, and I went with friends for Sunday breakfast. I'm so glad I did! There are so many vegetarian and vegan selections, in addition to turkey chili (for their regular breakfast burrito) or chicken apple sausage for their egg dishes. I absolutely loved my scrambled egg, cheddar cheese, and veggie sausage on a biscuit sandwich! It had a sweet and spicy taste in the biscuit that added additional delicious flavor and was a steal at $4.00! The breakfast burrito ($7.50) with turkey chili was huge and my partner loved it, and our friend, Tracy had the vegan burrito and loved that as well! They also offer scrambles and french toast; though, they say they're "an anti-pancake establishment," and they offer a few different cool breakfast drinkies like A very well embellished Bloody Mary (with celery and olives). Yum. The food is tasty, the service is attentive, the coffee is good, and the prices are very reasonable, all in a cozy atmosphere which is not overly-crowded (a rarity for Portland). I highly recommend Laurelthirst Public House for brunch on the weekends!

This place has been here for ever, over 20 years in its current incarnation, and decades before that as a neighborhood pub. It's Portland's old timey music central. How many notes have bounced off those walls? For happy hour, the special is free music, 6-8PM. Tuesday is bluegrass night with Jackstraw. Laura Veirs has played a month of Wednesdays with the musicians in her recording band, like Chris Funk. They have been mixing it up, with up and coming players like Grey Anne who I first saw about 2 years ago at a house concert. I'm not much a classic rock or country rock fan, but they have that too. Later in the evening, 9, there is sometimes a cover. Once a month this crazy musician Baby Gramps from Seattle plays. Request his palindrome song! The food is well executed bar food, this isn't a gastropub. They always have soup. A nice large selection of microbrews - 18 taps. The building will surely fall down in an earthquake and nothing fancy about the bathrooms. The smoking ban and adding a full bar have made the place even better. For some reason they recently added a little laser light show to the stage. (?) The bar is cramped, so don't expect fast service busy times. The place is a summer hot spot with outdoor seating and conversation. Inside it's air conditioned. Order food at the bar and it's delivered to the table Drinks ordered and picked up at the bar. The Tuesday crowd is varied and friendly. From people in their '80's to 21's, a gentleman with a seeing eye dog to outdoor surfer, kayaker and snow folks, musicians and teachers, programmers and carpenters, ad agency execs dancing with their sweetie. More fleece than fur, more outdoor shoes than heels. Definitely a dress down spot. Solid and cool staff. Music insiders know their epic tickets-in-advance New Year's Eve, lately with Laura Veirs backed by Decemberists. What a pleasure to see beautiful and friendly people in Chucks and rain parkas dancing up a storm while other venues sprout pretentiousness. Best of all, it's authentic, which is hard in trendy Portland.

I'll keep this quick: there's a little WINE RACK behind the bar. Surprising, when most bars like this serve their wine by "color", there's actually some choice here...insert shock and awe. Oh AND it doesn't suck. I find some great bands to hear, friendly efficient bartenders, very reasonable pricing (seriously), and a minimal cover for music in the evenings. I haven't eaten here - only drank (whoopsie); however I will update with a food review whence I return...which I will do soon

To say this is a comfortable bar is an understatement. The Laurelthirst (or simply "The Hurst" by those in the know) is the kind of place you can feel as comfortable as your living room and might be inclined to put your feet up, take your shoes off, even stretch out across a booth or two chairs pulled together for a nap (but please don't). They have wonderful employees (that word sounds terrible, they're "friends"), good beer, good food, no smoking, mellow lighting, no TV, and live music all the time. Two shows a day, many of them free (all good bands, I'm sure, but looking at their schedule you get the impression that some of these bands have their foot firmly in the door and WILL until someone removes it with an axe). And it's the home of the legendary Michael Hurley when he's in town. It was once my home as well, my home away from home, for breakfast. I regret that I missed brunch on my trip to Portland, and now, speeding eastward, I wish I had tried harder. It seems they aren't open for breakfast on weekdays anymore, which is too bad (that's how that fifth yelp star dissolved). I used to live on the "veggie hash"-- oh, but now I'm showing my age. The Hurst has been around since Mount Tabor was an active volcano, back when people wore those Civil War clothes, well, because it was the Civil War. When only sailors had tattoos. And beards... ("See my beard, ain't it weird, don't be sceered, it's just a beard...") Anyway, in my opinion, this place is what "public house" should be all about. Don't let the old hippies scare you away... remember, someday you're going to be an "Old Hipster."

This is one of those classic Portland neighborhood pubs. Small, intimate, great atmosphere with old, worn furniture dark paint and exposed brick. Their dinner options are just what to expect from a pub. The nachos are as unhealthy as they can get. The soup bowl is amazing. Who wouldn't love French bread drenched in garlic butter with soup in the middle? Went last night to listen to some wonderful music and had a really great time.

If I could give this place a million stars I would. My grandpa Chet has been hanging out at this place through multiple owners up until his death last month. The owners and employees truly care about their customers and always looked after my gramps. They even went as far as to go to his house and check on him if they hadn't seen him in a few days. Awesome! I also have been here every time I was in town to visit. The decor is old school public house form. The food was tasty. I always had french toast when I was here and it always was perfect. I love their cream of mushroom soup. And it goes without saying (but I'm still gonna say it) that I love the beer!!!! I also found it funny that they looked the other way when my grandma used to try and stuff everything on the table into her purse to take home. Since I will no longer be making visits to Portland I will definitely miss stopping in here to see my family. Although I didn't know the people here very well, anyone who treated my grandpa so wonderfully will always be like family to me.

I must go back to Laurelthirst soon. I went because a friend invited me to hear a band. I'd just enjoyed Happy Hour over at Jade Lounge, so I wasn't interested in ordering any food. I really liked the atmosphere and the live music while sipping on a cold beverage. If I lived closer I would so be a regular.

Really chill spot, lots of seating. We went on a weekday and there were still plenty of people, so I'm sure it gets crazy on the weekends. Didn't order any food as we had just come from dinner, but from what I saw, it looked really good. Great location, close to Pambiche and some other cool spots.

They've got some great vegan options (they offer more veg things during the week than the weekend) My favorite - fluffy and delicious vegan pancakes for a great price! EDIT - they are now only serving breakfast on the weekends.

Love this bar. Went there for the first time on a date last night. Friday night, cool vibe, folk singer Alice Stewart playing. Fair sized small crowd, still quiet enough to hold a conversation. The esthetic is the quintessential (or what I imagine to be the quintessential since I wasn't actually there) 60's folky poetry reading type hang spot. I guess they have food too, but I didn't eat. Great little bar, hang spot, definitely want to go back. That's about it.

five stars for two main and recent reasons...... I have no idea why it's not full for sunday brunch as there are comfy booths, we sat outside today, and the food aint bad. food alone would not warrant 5 stars though ability to eat here when other places have 20 people waiting outside (cricket cafe people?? really?), is quality. the homemade muffins are amazing, i say way better than those pine state ones, the grits are good with aardvark and the scrambles (avoid the veggie sausage) are tasty. i am soooo happy to make this my sunday brunch spot ahead of holmans if first choice has a line or when i just want to brunch it without a crowd today's and past sunday brunches combined with last thursday night here give this place a 5 star without any hesitation... Last thursday went for a friend's birthday- her bf happens to play in the band that plays every thursday. this was the same thursday that i will officially call the nicest weathered day of 2010 so far. i shit you not, at 6pm when the bf's band started playing it began: the most eclectic dance party i have ever seen. i was so not expecting to see that crowd and the dancing that happened (and that apparently happens every thursday and possibly sundays)... most people were between 35 and 65, and motherfucker were these people rocking out! yes, there was tye dye, yes there were sandals and socks, but there were hotties and youngies, some who had come straight from work, some you would run from and some you can't wait to talk to- the most refreshingly least hipster scene i have seen in this city. ever. i LOVED it. i would so take anyone here on a thursday who was visiting portland or even any portlander who has not experienced a thursday night here and by 730pm at least 40 people were dancing, while it was still sunny and 75 outside!!! would definitely rate as somewhere i would go alone (though you won't have to as i will be there most thursdays with friends), probably the best people watching, strangest yet most endearing and intriguing crowd, the bartenders are nice and the beer is cheap. me gusta

I would seven-star the shit out of this joint if I could. Often described to me as the "old hippie's hangout," this place reeks of comfort and family (and old beer and the occasional surge of patchouli). No other bar makes me feel quite as at home with its solid rotating tap list, smiling patrons, and fantastic lineup of free (!!!) shows! Where else can I show up on a Thursday, drink some good beer, listen to amazing free tunes, and be sure of running in to at least seven friends? The dance floor is always packed, the booze is free-flowing, the person next to you is bound to have an interesting story to tell, and I can't keep the damn smile off my face.

I've heard good things about this bar and finally went and tried it. The food was ok but not exceptional (though it was really well priced) and the service was really quite awful. The bartender seemed surprised when I walked in the door to order a beer and it didn't get any better than that. They seemed to have a fair amount of interesting beer but only one IPA that wasn't even any good. The people here also looked homeless... hipster homeless? I'm not sure but it was fairly disturbing. I don't plan on giving it another shot.

Assinine Door/ID Practices. So I was turned away from Laurelthirst tonight for not having my ID, though I am nearly 40 ... Fair enough, I get the OLCC is tough, but THEN, the door woman let 3 of my friends (whom arrived after my departure) in without even asking for their ID. The band even vouched for my age and put me on the list. I drove out 8-10 miles to see my friend (whom just flew out from Nashville) play. Driving back for ID would make it a 40 mile trip by the end. Luckily she plays another venue Saturday and all is not lost. Sadly (or maybe happily), for the Laurelthirst, I have no intention of ever setting foot in that bar again as long as that door person continues this either sexist or age-ist practice of checking ID's. The only good thing I can say is that when I called to get the owner's contact information, a very friendly person (the cook) understood my dismay and assisted me quickly - so maybe the food is good?

This bar is great for a late night out. They always have some kind of live music, the drinks are strong and the employees are always friendly. My parents even love to come by when they are visiting from out of town. Breakfast is a great meal at the Laurelthirst, my boyfriend had the scramble and I had the biscuits and gravy and it's another place where breakfast and a full bar are great hand and hand :)

Bear in mind, I don't drink. So this is a review based purely on the food - specifically the brunch offerings. I have a relative who loves this place and whenever we gather, this is where his vote goes. I don't get the appeal, though. I ordered a biscuit sandwich - comes with egg, cheese and bacon - but first asked the server if it was dry since there was no indication that anything else came on the biscuit. All he said was that it was very popular. I decided to give it a whirl and guess what? It was so dry I had to dunk my sandwich in my mother-in-law's biscuits and gravy to get through the whole thing! And the egg that comes on it isn't what you're thinking - no ooey-gooey sunnyside up that explodes all over your biscuit. Just a nondescript, unflavored scrambled egg patty that looks like it came straight from McDonald's. Again, I ask, the appeal? Nothing on the menu got me very excited, nor did there seem to be any hidden treasure unique to this place. I try not to judge too harshly as it is a pub first... For what it's worth, though, my MIL's biscuits and gravy were pretty crackin'.

Best people watching on Portland. A locals hang out where everybody knew each other but as a visitor I didn't feel left out. Great beer on tap. Free live music and a great local band when we visited on Wednesday late afternoon. Dive bar bathroom rates up there with some of my favorotes.

I thought it was neat to have breakfast at the bar. They have a good selection for vegans. I got the vegan breakfast burrito, which is huge and came with home fries. It was not the best I've ever had but it was up there.

I really did enjoy myself here, but I do have some serious bitches and I'm really not sure why I'm still giving this place 4 stars. First, I went there with a guy that is the same age as I am - 34. The hobag at the door carded him, and not me. Okay, he's got a slight mohawk going on - but I don't really look old enough such that if I were WITH him that I shouldn't also be carded. Come people - you're in the service industry, and everyone knows that if you're to card one, you card all. And if you don't know that - then get another f'n job. Preferably one that does not involve people. Second, I sat down at the bar and 20 minutes later, some lady comes up to me and says, "you're in my seat", like I just ran over her dog. Now, okay... but I'm pretty sure that you didn't need to talk to me like that. And wouldn't you know, it looked like she was friends with the lady checking the IDs. Well, that said it all... and we moved just a touch down the bar, and everything from there on out was great. The live music was enjoyable but I can safely say that the mandolin is not my favorite instrument - live and learn. I really liked the volume on the music, and the style of music overall. I also felt like there was a good vibe around the place, and the beer selections included a nice variety that was decently priced. I did not participate in the food... but I will be returning when the opportunity presents itself. The #1 thing that I enjoyed (besides the fantastic company) was the clean breathing... oh, I like it when I can do that.

What dive bar has a fantastic veggie burger? Well, this one! We aren't vegetarians, but we loved the Spicy Veggie Burger (a homemade patty with chipotle and corn). You can't go wrong with that! The live music we heard was sweetly amateur, and the crowd was so pleasant and pleased, that it was impossible not to get sucked in.

I like my beer local just like I like my food and why not when local is Oregon and Oregon has great brew. Laurelthirst has a fairly large variety of local brew and thus I knew I had found my spot for the afternoon. This place is a perfect sunday spot! Its nestled at the corner of a very mellow area perfect for sitting outside with a pitcher, which is exactly what we did. The Grain Stout I had from SE Portland hit the stop perfect with the vegan burrito I ordered. Based on my snooty preconceived notions about Laurelthirst appearance I had assumed I would get a mediocre quality burrito but this was not the case. The food quality was good and between the looks of my friends sandwich and my burrito I would say the burrito is your best bet. Any place that has vegetarian/vegan options for most everything on the menu has my vote. I hear the brunch is something special here so I will be back next for some b-fast grub and a mimosa or a black velvet...umm yummm!

Good beer selection, and great veggie food. I had the spicy veggie burger, and my wife had the veggie breakfast burrito. We were both very impressed with the food. The bar was quiet on the Saturday at the start of the Memorial Day weekend, and the service was prompt and attentive. We will definitely try this place again

Went to support a friend's band and had the honor of chillin' in the "hot tub" the whole night (no it's just a booth, dubbed the hot tub). Their food was great, the beer is decently priced, and getting to hang out for a few hours listening to great local bands while chatting with friends was perfect. They have a lot of free concerts during the week and I fully support those. However, beware of what happens after those; you may get asked (yes, someone came by and asked) for $20 to see the next show. $20, who does that band think they are? seriously--i didn't stick around to find out.

This is one of my favorite places to go to see local live music, have a good microbrew, and eat a Veggie "Sin" Burger with bacon. Staff is friendly, busy... but friendly. It is a great place to meet up with friends and have a good time. Breakfast is good here too. If you like a dark dive that knows how to party, look no further.

If you like country, bluegrass, rock, or acoustic music, this is the place to be. Everything from the community (the regulars), the music, the staff, and prices are awesome. The food is pretty good and its a real friendly place. For the amount that people drink, you'd be surprised how douchebag-free it is. There is free music every day (6-8) and the owners treat the bands really well. I love this place!

Best place in Portland to hear great bands. Fine beer selection. Full bar. Inexpensive cover or NO cover for the 6pm shows. Baby Gramps plays here first Friday of every month. The Freaks on Sunday. Lewi Longmire books the acts and he's got great ears. Only downside is it can get crowded and if you don't have a seat or table or bar stool it can be a little annoying. That said, if I lived any closer to the place, I think my life would be a complete mess.

My venture to the Laurelthirst with a coworker was a most enjoyable experience; plenty of amazing microbrews on tap (none for me, though, as DD) and the best cream of mushroom soup I have ever had, bar none. What really sets the Laurelthirst apart, though, it not so much its usual assortment of bar-ish goodies. (Bar-ish? It's a word, I promise) No, what sets this quaint pub apart from so many others is its decor, its atmosphere; dim yet pleasant, retro yet unpretentious, stark yet warm, the Laurelthirst is a wonderful, relaxing place to chill with friends and yet still feel justified in spending your money. I immediately felt at home, and barely noticed the standard service that accompanied my meal. Simply go and unwind, don't look for anything spectacular, and the natural charm of this pub will grow on you. I'm not sure how they did it, but the owners have cobbled together the perfect storm of mellow atmosphere and comfort food. Definitely recommended.

Dear Laurelthirst, I no longer live in Portland, but I've missed you. I recently visited after a 3 year absence and you were the first eatery I revisited. I have only ever had breakfast here, but it is my favorite place to go in Portland. It isn't the most creative or interesting of food, but it is consistently tasty and filling. The breakfast burritos are amazing and hearty-- both the vegan and regular one. The veg sausage is some of the best I've ever had. And they have grits! The staff is always friendly, coffee cups are never empty, the booths are super-cozy, and I've never had to wait more than a moment for a seat. Laurelthirst, you are what I miss about Portland.

Laurelthirst is a small bar with a casual feel. They have free live music from 6-8pm, with a possible cover charge if you stay past 9:30. We saw the Tree Free Frogs, drank Oatmeal Stout and Autumn Amber, and had a relaxing time. They have a pool table hidden in the back, too. The Tree Frogs are a great psychedelic rock band with a lot of energy. The bass player is worth seeing. Nice beer selection on tap, with plenty of seasonal options. I had the grilled veggie sandwich with potato green chile soup. Yum!

Great bar. They put on concerts all week, the food is good, the bartenders friendly, and the clientèle are generally very cool, normal people.

I've only been there for breakfast, but we go there almost every single time we visit Portland. I love the veggie options, as breakfast is usually a hard meal to find good veggie options at most places. The veggie biscuits and gravy are great, and their in-house (i think) veggie sausage patties go perfect with the biscuits and gravy.

Hadn't been here in almost a year until last week. I never really missed the place but it does what it does well. Food is okay - breakfast is good and sandwiches are decent. Reasonably inexpensive and friendly, tho sometimes slow, wait staff. They tend to have pretty good music though not reliably so. It's definitely nothing fancy, but they aren't going for fancy... Good neighborhood bar/restaurant/venue.

if you love giant fluffy pancakes, this is the place to go! i got the vegan pancake, and was blown away! by far the best pancake i've ever eaten. they do however charge a ridiculous amount for real maple syrup, so if that's an issue for you, make sure to bring some from home if you can.

Nice neighborhood bar offering live music and libations. This was an after party for me so I only had ginger ale...but was reasonably priced. Cover was $5 and it included 3 bands. The Tree Frogs and two others with the name Bob in them. The band had some good music but after an hour you realized it sounded mostly the same...and not unlike the Dave Matthews Band. It was a nice atmosphere and I'm definitely going to go back. Had an interesting mix of people and was definitely NOT smoky.

I live in Seattle but come to Portland every other month or so. Whenever I'm in town I end up getting breakfast a the Laurelthirst. The food is excellent. The staff isn't exactly nice but kind of surly and indifferent in that Portland kind of way. Often times my friends and I have plans on going to other places for breakfast. But everywhere else has long waits. Not so at the Laurelthirst. No wait. There's hardly ever anyone eating there! whats up with that? Like I said. Good food.

Great place to drink after a dinner at pambiche. Nice patio and darts.

Their vegan pancakes are the best I've ever had at a restaurant, and I have had a lot of vegan pancakes at a lot of different restaurants. I make sure to get some whenever I'm in Portland, even though it can be inconvenient since they're only served on weekdays. The tofu scramble and potatoes are also yummy, but it's those pancakes that keep me coming back.

Free Music (sometimes) and good regional beer. Laurelthirst frequently rotates taps of great regional beers. I love their selection, and I can always find either something I want or something I have never had. It feels like a really packed coffeehouse rather than a bar, which I love. The range of music varies. I have seen some great stuff and terrible stuff. I have sat at the bar and laughed at the death metal country that kept singing about the reaper (oh farmers and their corn). But, I stopped going. Its fun for Happy Hour music, but not a very exciting evening.

Good, no hassle, no frills affordable breakfast. Service was fast, friendly and the food was better than expected on a Saturday morning. Why wait and pay $15 for a similar experience? Definitely would recommend!

I was very pleased with the quality of food. I had the vegan breakfast burrito. Very good. It was a little cool, not very well lit, but the service was great. I will definitely be back to try some more.

Hands down one of my favorite places for brunch. Their breakfast burritos are the size of a small child, but even more delicious! A great space with well-worn booths, live music nighly, and never too crowded (knock on wood). Trivial Pursuit question cards on each table keep you occupied until your order arrives. Only four stars because they will only serve pancakes on weekdays. Wtf?!! Let there be pancakes for everyday, I say!

I was walking by this bar during a recent stay in Portland's Hollywood neighborhood, and decided to keep walking. After touring the neighborhood, I realized that the first bar that I had passed (Laurelthirst) was the establishment that I was most likely to enjoy. I was not disappointed; the beer selection was good, the bar was great, and a live band played in the back corner. I'll definitely stop by the next time I'm in Portland.

Fast and efficient service. Awesome vegan breakfast burritos -- the best that I've ever had! Their vegan pancakes are also spectacular.

This is a good fine bar, a no frills kind of joint with an exposed brick wall which reminds me of some NYC soho loft from a movie. There's a fine selection of beers on tap and the guys behind the bar are friendly. I would consider this a neighborhood bar, something where locals go and off the beaten path.... the small stage provides for an intimate venue to see a show which was the exact reason why we were there... If you're in the hood stop on by for a pint or a game of pool.

The Laurelthirst is basically my neighborhood pub, just a few blocks' stroll from my place and on my way home too. So I've been in at least 30 times. As far as I'm concerned, there are actually two Laurelthirsts. The first is the quiet local pub, with a nice selection of good beers, plenty of room at the bar and tables, sunny benches outside. A good place to have a pint, chat with friends, read a book, shoot some pool, eat some okay vegetarian food, whatever. Relaxed crowd of usuals, a mix of regular Joes, tattooed 20-somethings, aging hippies, and dogs, everyone getting along just fine. This Laurelthirst I give a "4", and it would be "5" except that they stopped carrying draft Guiness - so no black and tans - and I like meat. The second is the local music spot, and here is where I'm less enthusiastic. The music is decent enough - I'm not as wowed by the regular bands as some reviewers are, some are fine but I wouldn't pay a cover to see them, not twice anyway. But the problem is, on music nights the Laurelthirst charges a cover and is too noisy and crowded to converse or sip a pint. So no nipping down to my local pub on those nights. Curses! But I realize that my resentment at losing my nearby quiet pint a few nights a week really isn't pertinent to readers, so we'll stick with the "4". The Laurelthirst is a good place, and on those nights already lost to music you should go there and have a good time. I'm almost never there weekdays before 3PM either, so go enjoy the mellow buzz and meatless eats then as well. But stay the hell away the rest of the time because I don't really want my neighborhood pub to get popular ;-)

I was not extremely impressed with this place. Some friends wanted to meet us here for brunch. Overall, the food was average and the service was terrible. The server walked away before I could even ask for anything. The good thing is I don't think you'll find a wait here for breakfast and it's very low key.

At first I though Laurelthirst was kind of a lame name. I mean its cute and all, but should cute really be associated with a place of drinking and anebriation? Well, not in my world. However, once I entered into the Laurelthirst Public House, my misconceptions were vanquished in the wake of a really cool time. The beer and food are good, especially when you're their during happy hour. I had the bread bowl withy chili in it. Delicious. Alos the klive music was cool. Upright bass and stell guitar. cool stuff, but I cannot remember the name of the band. I hear that Thursday is the coolest day to go because the musician that plays that night simply rocks the house. He also does a cover of 'War Pigs' by Ozzy which I hear is amazing. The only downside was that the staff wasn't all that friendly, but for some reason it didn't bother me. The atmosphere simply overwhlems any change of a bad experience. Laurelthirst is a cool place, if it was closer to my place I'd probably go all the time, however, I'm sure I'll make several return trips.

I love this place. I like to go in on the weekends for breakfast and they don't judge me when I ask for a beer at 9:30 AM. The people who work there have worked there for years and they are all really cool. I plan to frequent this place as long as I live in Portland.

Best bar to visit if you want to meet mandolins. During one set, there were three on the little corner stage, in addition to an upright bass, a steel guitar, and an acoustic guitar. Since I don't want to steal the band's thunder, they get full credit for the "cluster-pluck" and "gang-twang" puns. I guess a string of pearls joke might have been too much. Anyway, the size of the pub feels intimate, but there are quite a few booths and tables. And the side of the bar with the pool table and pinball machines is pretty roomy and becomes an almost ghost-town as long as the live music is on. Points for an effective ventilation system, as well as a nice staff and a healthy variety of beer selections, including local brews. There's definitely something very comforting about a friendly neighborhood hoe-down spot - even a random housecat wanted in on the fun. Drums? We don't need no stinkin' drums.

The Thirst deserves an updated review. It has, since my first visit, become my go-to H20ing hole. There is always a great mix of people (young and old, first-timers and regulars, shabby and chic, mellow and frolicsome, drunk and...drunk). You'd be hard-pressed to find a more pleasant and relaxed spot. The menu features a refreshing round-up of soups, salads, sandwiches, and your normal(ish) bar fare. The generous portions are always prepared and presented with care. Excellent veggie burger. The staff is always ready to tend to your hunger pangs or to answer any beer- or golf-related questions you may have. Sure, they may appear standoffish at first but they warm up after a while. And they rock some swell tunes. If you go after 6 there will most likely be people playing music up on the tiny stage. And it will most likely be splendid. Shouts out to Jackstraw on Tuesdays and The (aforementioned) KPCs on Mondays (both free!). I've seen The Sarcastic Dharma Society and Super XX Man, Celilo, Laura Veirs, etc., here--totally intimate setting, usually $5 cover at most (if there is any cover at all). Sweet.

This is my new favorite bar to hang out at! I love bluegrass and country rock, and this is the venue where they all seem to go to play. The crowd is your typical patchouli hippie type, although I am just a normal square and still have a good time. There are lots of tables but they fill up fast so come 30 mins before a show in order to snag one. They have a very large tasty selection of beer on tap. No liquor is served. I've never had the food but there are many vegetarian options. There is another room sans music, with pool, and LOTR pinball!! The two times I have played LOTR pinball some guy (a different guy each time) has came up and gotten my friend's (a different girl each time) phone number, so hey what easier way to pick up chicks than to come over and impress them with your mad pinball skillz. Jackstraw, an amazing bluegrass band, plays every Tuesday for free from 6-8 and is probably the highlight of the week.

(5)Andrea L.
(4)Jeff W.
Gotta say, happy hr with giant love (Wednesday night) was amaze balls. Great lead singer, amaaaaazing vocals. Love the ambience of the space, good cider on tap, easy parking. Nachos ok. Very nice neighborhood feeling and diverse crowd.
(4)Nick H.
(5)Selena N.
(4)Pete P.
Classic bar with plenty on draft! Great food, great atmosphere, and great music. Perfect place to meet friends for a pint and interesting music. Best of all - a place in Portland that doesn't judge for ordering other beer besides a local microbrew!
(4)Liz S.
Cheap booze, good live music, friendly people. I will be back, especially for their bluegrass!
(4)Bullwinkle J.
This place is phenomenal. Free live music on many nights (Mondays are exceptionally great), great beer selection at manageable prices, nice and normal bartenders, good atmosphere, decent food. Totally unpretentious. Makes the list.
(5)M D.
(1)Dayna D.
Awesome local live music bar! I am pretty certain that they have music here literally every single night of the week ranging from free to $10 cover. Great beer selection on tap. Good bar food. Great crowd and friendly staff!
(5)Mark B.
(5)RJ H.
Suggest you frequent their website to check out their live music schedule...be prepared to become family and if only awkwardly...do some free form dancing. ..
(3)Johanna L.

(3)Jupiter C.
(3)MirMack M.
(4)Amy B.
I went for Saturday brunch. It was just ok. I think this place is more of an evening entertainment place. Tons of beer on tap, little stage area for live music and a great dive bar feel. I tried, I didn't hate it, I just won't go back for breakfast.
(3)Alex R.
(4)Mark B.
Perfect neighborhood bar. Older, but super fun crowd.
(4)Stanley T.

(5)Patti F.
(4)Richard S.
(4)Alyssa A.
(4)Alisa M.
(5)Megan L.
Sassparilla! Listening to Sassparilla and enjoying an IPA. Life is good. the staff was awesome as ever!!
(4)Angela K.
This place was okey dokey. If you are looking to have an okey dokey night, you could come here.I probably wouldn't go out of your way, though, unless it is difficult for you to find places where you can have a moderate amount of fun.
(2)Evelyn S.
(4)Britt W.
Really chill spot, lots of seating. We went on a weekday and there were still plenty of people, so I'm sure it gets crazy on the weekends. Didn't order any food as we had just come from dinner, but from what I saw, it looked really good. Great location, close to Pambiche and some other cool spots.
(4)Allison B.

Just don't get the nachos, they are beyond disappointing.

(4)Martin C.

(5)Daniel P.
(5)David B.

Portland at it's finest

Comfortable spot, older crowd, pinball, alright beer selection, & free live music. thats all.
(3)Lulu M.
(4)S S.
Yum!
(4)Daniel S.
Great bar. They put on concerts all week, the food is good, the bartenders friendly, and the clientèle are generally very cool, normal people.
(4)Gabriel A.
(5)B. S.
(4)Carrie M.
if you love giant fluffy pancakes, this is the place to go! i got the vegan pancake, and was blown away! by far the best pancake i've ever eaten. they do however charge a ridiculous amount for real maple syrup, so if that's an issue for you, make sure to bring some from home if you can.
(4)Brian M.

Good food.
(5)Shane K.
Great place to drink after a dinner at pambiche. Nice patio and darts.
(4)Becca P.
(4)Adam A.
(4)C N.
Good, no hassle, no frills affordable breakfast. Service was fast, friendly and the food was better than expected on a Saturday morning. Why wait and pay $15 for a similar experience? Definitely would recommend!
(4)Justin S.
I was very pleased with the quality of food. I had the vegan breakfast burrito. Very good. It was a little cool, not very well lit, but the service was great. I will definitely be back to try some more.
(4)Leanne M.
(4)Mike K.
(5)Chairman T.
Fast and efficient service. Awesome vegan breakfast burritos -- the best that I've ever had! Their vegan pancakes are also spectacular.
(5)Len S.
(3)John L.
(4)Meegs G.
I was not extremely impressed with this place. Some friends wanted to meet us here for brunch. Overall, the food was average and the service was terrible. The server walked away before I could even ask for anything. The good thing is I don't think you'll find a wait here for breakfast and it's very low key.
(3)Dan H.
(4)Lish R.
I love this place. I like to go in on the weekends for breakfast and they don't judge me when I ask for a beer at 9:30 AM. The people who work there have worked there for years and they are all really cool. I plan to frequent this place as long as I live in Portland.
(5)Kimberly V.
(5)Rebecca L.
Sweet.
(5)Heidi B.
Good food, great bar, and love the open mike nights.
(4)Katie D.
