WOW!!! Just moved from the east side and love mexican so this place is close to our house...The food was excellent!!!! Not your average rice and beans place. The service was a little slow but the food more than made up for that

This was my favorite restaurant when first introduced to me by friends around 2005/2006. I would literally travel an hour for their arroz con pollo and a great margarita. Flash forward to 2013 and things have unfortunately changed considerably. The bartender, while pleasant, did not understand my order for a margarita due to a language barrier. The rest of the staff was marginally polite. Their menu now has considerably less options, but still enough variety to please both my husband and me. He thought the carne asada was good, I thought the steak fajitas were decent. A general decline was evident in very worn serving pieces at our table, as well as in the broken toilet paper holder and paper towel dispenser with their covers missing in the ladies' room. Adios, La Costita - it was fun while it lasted.

Well, you know, it's a Mexican Restaurant in a strip mall. What can you really expect?! Pretty Americanized. Some unique menu items. The Jalapeno Margarita was good. Salsa is very bland. Hostess had a great personality and made the experience fun. Bartendar had a bit of an attitude but service was OK. They do have a nice outside seating area and interesting decor. Convenient SW Barbur location. Nothing overly outstanding but not a bad experience either.

Disclaimer: I compare all Mexican food to my Aunt Isabel's homemade lovin'-in-the-oven, so I have a keen nose for authentic Mexican food. It's nearly impossible to find, in case you haven't noticed. I've had lunch and dinner here twice each and it was pretty good. I think La Costita is especially great for happy hour, which is what I'm mostly basing my rating on, but as a family-owned restaurant, it does a good job of keeping locals content with typical American-Mexican cuisine. In other words, I wouldn't take my Aunt Isabel here for a meal, but it satisfies the need for a Margarita and maybe a hot chimichanga after work. Right off the bat, they get 3 stars for happy hour. I revere 3 things in any Mexican restaurant that claims to have a happy hour, judging on the following: 1) the Margaritas were divine, perfectly mixed every time! I may very well dream about them; 2) the chips were probably not homemade, but they were huge, warm, and very crunchy; 3) I have very high standards for salsa, but their (extremely mild) salsa was pretty good for a restaurant, and it comes in a carafe! It was cold, fresh, and tasted great after a few drinks. The fourth star is a combo for service and price: 4a) Our waiter was one of the best I've ever had. He kept our drinks coming with a sense of humor and friendly attitude (and even a little flirtation!), replenished our chips and salsa, and even let us borrow his lighter! 4b) The happy hour prices were good. I had 2 blended margaritas and my husband had 3 beers. The total came to $25. So I suggest you check this place out for summer happy hour, but keep cruisin' around if you want spectacular, authentic Mexican food. But be warned: I don't think it exists in any Mexican restaurant on the planet...only in the kitchens of family and friends.

We love La Costita! We order from them using deliver dish at least once a month. The flavors are great, always consistent. I love the specialties. The salsa is really awesome too. Large portions, always a bonus in my book.

I always sit in the bar, chips and salsa are great. Most entrees are fantastic. Went for happy hour on Sunday this last week. Garbage food quality. Server in bar was bringing us wrong drinks and wrong food. Place wasn't even busy. She kept hurrying to get back to the bar to check her damn phone. Annoying. I will be back but will complain to a manager next time if that happens again.

Kids love it. Comfortable to sit and chat and drink a margarita. Not exactly a foodie stop, but nice local Mexican.

On the plus side, the service was excellent, and interior was comfortable. HOWEVER... frozen vegetables (and completely devoid of any flavor), "pulled" pork that was as tough as leather and could not possibly have been cooked the same day (I'd guess several days earlier). Both of these problems are absolutely unacceptable at any restaurant. Went there on a Living Social deal, so they must be having trouble, not surprisingly. I should start reading reviews before buying these deals. Hope this prevents someone from a huge disappointment.

Rich mole, delicious staples across the menu.

Tasty Mexican food! The menu has some classic standards as well as entrees I have personally never seen before, and the one I ordered was great! The salsa and spices on the dishes were hot for me, but I have a sensitive palate to anything mild to hot. It didn't go overboard, I was able to clean my plate while guzzling water. We ate in the dinner are, so I didn't see the bar. I liked the dining room area, it was cute. I forgot I was in a strip mall. Will definitely be going back.

This places is a textbook example of the rule 'If a restaurant is in a strip mall, its not that good". The happy hour is okay, there is a large selection of different Mexican dishes, however not a lot of typical items. Call me crazy but would it be so hard to put $1 Tacos or some Nachos on the Happy Hour Menu? The only reason I would go back is the large selection of Tequila. For all other purposes Si Senor is far superior.

Went to dinner here last week and yuck! What a gut ache I had the rest of the night!! The flavor was weird and the prices were too high!! If you want a good experience and are in this neighborhood, try Casa Colima in Hillsdale!! We are sorry we didn't just go there. so much for broadening our horizons. WOW! Service was non existent too. waiter took our order, brought us food took our money. Never checked on us and we had to get up to get some hot sauce. I'm so pissed this was the last meal before starting my diet too!!! YUCK YUCK!! Wish I could give it NO star!!

I've come here 4-5 times for happy hour. I've never had a bad experience. The only trick can be finding a seat on a busy night. Otherwise, you're set. Walk in, the bar is snazzy. Flat screen TVs, neon lighting (but not annoying), beers on tap, bar stools, plenty of booths, and some tables. Even have outside seating for those nice warm nights. The chips and salsa provided are excellent. They make them fresh. The salsa comes in a mini-carafe, you get to pour it on your own. I actually like this. I've had issues with people I don't trust double-dipping in the past (no, not with anybody I've been here with). It makes me rest easy knowing I can pour out salsa in my own bowl if I want. Besides, that way *I* can double dip. :-) The beer selection is decent - the happy hour specials are great. You can get around a 48oz domestic on tap for something stupid like $2. A micro or import is like $4. I know for a fact they have Dos Equis and Rogue Dead Guy on tap. That's a damn good deal. They have a large tequila selection. Their margaritas are OK. I've had one, I wasn't that impressed - tasted mostly like syrup to me. I'll stick to the beer or tequila. The food itself is good. Guacamole is fresh and tasty. Enchiladas are cheesy and saucy. Quesadillas ain't bad. I've ordered a Burrito SO-CAL style here. It turned out not bad. The quality of the meat they use is excellent. I'm never worried about scaly/smelly beef (like you'll find at Azteca), rotten chicken, bad pork, etc. The food is straight here. Outside of happy hour I can't tell you much. There's plenty of seating, the front of the restaurant looks nice. Check it out. Just be prepared to fight for parking - this little mall doesn't offer much on that front.

Food was yummy. I got the burrito with spinach, almonds, chicken and bacon bits. The Cadillac margarita was awful. Barely drinkable. I had to get another shot and extra ice to make it somewhat palatable. But when I got the bill, the drink cost $8.70 something and they charged me $10 for the shot!!!! Crazy! Needless to say, I spoke me mind about it and got the shot reduced to $5. I won't be drinking here again.

Don't Eat Here!!!!! I ate here yesterday. We were the only 2 seated in the bar area. The worst service I have ever had anywhere in Portland. The chips and salsa are mediocre. Salsa is not homemade. The waiter took forever to ask us for drinks and seemed disappointed that we didn't order a margarita. He managed to get get my food order wrong, never came back to the table and asked if we needed anything. Felt sick the entire evening after eating here.

  • Gregg A.

The meals are a little overpriced for what you get, and the food is decent, but feels a little on the cheaper side. I tend to get the fajitas, even though they are the most expensive thing on the menu (very good). The atmosphere is ok with a family style restaurant on one side and a bar on the other with new flatscreens showing sportcenter. The Dos Equis is served in a large mug and a couple of those get your night started off right. The chips and salsa is pretty decent, but of course you can't stop eating them! Nice little place to start the night out and break it in with a tequila shot! There is also a small outside eating area which is great in the summer time!

  • Sara D.

Pretty disgusting. It probably doesn't help that the last time I ate from here I was sick and in a pissy mood, but I won't be coming back unless I'm absolutely desperate. This is not good food. The last time we got food here, my boyfriend ordered fajitas (for two) for takeout. The steak was dry, rubbery and kind of a sick greyish color. We literally received a teaspoon of guacamole and sour cream. The salsa was not spicy, and they only gave us 4 tortillas. Ugh, and the chips are horrible. $20 bucks for total crap. I remember the margaritas being ok, and they have outdoor seating which I might come back for. But only for drinks, not food. Not when I could make it 10x better at home.

La Costita's mission is to integrate pre-hispanic ingredients and cooking techniques with contemporary trends in modern Mexican cuisine. I had the Pina Rellena which pretty much exemplified this mission to me. The menu stated that dish was inspired by the coasts and beaches and the area of Tuxtla, Veracruz, Mexico. The dish was a combination of adobe'd shrimp and fish sauteed in tequila with sliced onions, peppers, topped with melted jack cheese, and baked in a pineapple. It was served with white rice and a crunchy salad of pico de gallo, jicama, and carrots marinated in an orange vinaigrette. I found the dish to be full of flavor, but very subtle and not overpowering. Honestly, this is not a refined flavor combination that I'm used to and I found the subtle flavors very pleasing. I guess I would consider it slightly up scale (without a stuffy upscale feel) with the entrees ranging from $11.50 - $15.25, but well worth the experience. If you're looking to feed your face (classy huh?) on mexican food, I suggest you go elsewhere because the portions are not overwhelming. There's no foot and a half burrito or gordita crunch supreme here. We'll definitely be back to taste the new creations from La Costita from a menu (from what the waiter told us) changes every month or so. Alibi - Complimentary chips (warm) and salsa were also winners. Another basket of chips please...

This place is consistently good on all levels. It's not fancy, but the food's very good and the people are friendly and fast. And it has a good bar, too.

The food was okay, but overpriced. Plus, I got charged extra for carne asada on the quesadilla, even though the menu does not indicate that it is extra.

Great food, fast friendly service, comfortable attractive surroundings, tejano music. What more can you ask for? But, I must take issue with the reviewer who hinted that strip mall restaurants are doomed to be bad. Particularly pertaining to ethnic food, that is not the case! Some of Portland's best Thai food is in strip malls; for the best Mexican food in Southern California, cruise the strip malls.

My wife and I love Mexican food and have been searching for a good Mexican restaurant since we moved here 2 1/2 yrs ago from the bay area. Today we were ready to explore...it also helped that we had a Living Social coupons! Parking can be difficult here as the parking lot is smallish and the restaurant is amongst other businesses like Starbucks, Subway and FedEx. The decor has that rustic but modernish feeling, we really liked it. Big windows splash light everywhere in the restaurant. They have both booths (which we prefer) and tables. It's not a huge place, but a homey and comfortable decor. Our server was Juan (great guy!) I ordered a pomegranite margarita that was shaken My wife choose a mango margarita, she liked my margarita better. I thought the price of the margaritas were a little expensive for a 12oz drink at $6.29. I asked Juan about how they make their margaritas and they use fruit purees, premium tequila and no premix :) Both margaritas were very fresh tasting and very yummy! There menu had plenty of options for lunch and I ordered the chicken mole. This is one of my favority Mexican dishes, so I had to try it. It was on there lunch menu for $8.59. My wife ordered the 2 taco combo with ground beef. So while we waited for our entrees, we chowed down on some chips and salsa. The chips were thin, crisp and fresh! The salsa was also fresh fresh fresh, flavorful and very very tasty! The mole dish came with some rice, the chicken with the mole sauce over it and fresh homemade flour tortillas. I was able to make two full tacos with some left over. What a meal! Great taste of spices and creaminess from the mole, tender chicken and the rice had a great taste (yeah, the rice!). We asked Juan about the type of rice they use and he explained that they use a different type of rice that is a little more sticky and is fluffier then any other Mexican rice we've ever had. My wife loved her tacos as well and she's a very picky eater! Loved it! This is definitely (now) one of our favorite Mexican restaurants here in Portland! We will definitely be back!

I am a huge fan of La Costita Mexican Restaurant. I used to go here for lunch and was amazed at how fast our food came out and what great service we had. I love the decor inside; the big booths and the bamboo and waterfall. This is a great place for quick good eats. Good for lunch or family dinners.

Food was alright, a little on the pricey side for what you get. The chips and salsa was good. I ordered a margarita, i don't know the name, but I didn't like it much. I tried to be adventurous, next time I'm going to stick with strawberry margaritas. Here's a little fact for all of you guys...my margarita was $10.00 (rounding up)...which was more expensive then the food.

We tried La Costita as a take-out order and this was also the first time trying Mexican food in Portland. It was ok for take out but we've never gone back. I had enchilada and Mike had steak tacos, plain. The portions weren't worth the dough spent and my order was ok but not super tasty. The parking situation doesn't help for big parties, it's more of a place for happy hour, small appetizers and a place to walk to or everybody haul ass in one car, hey it happens. I don't don't like this place, I'm willing to give it a try one day but i couldn't tell you when.

Some of the best Chicken En Mole in town. The drinks and mexican beer selection are also second to none. The food is slightly upscale and tastes great. Try the prawns for a flavorful treat.

This is the first time that I had been to their new building. These are the things I did not care for: 1) trying to get too many tables into a space with no privacy 2) salsa had no taste, not even mild 3)Waited a long time for a second bowl of chips and 4) I got cooked vegies as a side dish, but I could not cut them with my folk because they weren't done. There are too many Mexican restaurants in the area to go here again. This use to be a fun palce to go with great food. No more.

I have been impressed with the quality and preparation of both the "standards" as well as their more interesting "house specials". Sadly, their Margaritas are mediocre at best :( - of it would be 4-star. But the service is usually very friendly and attentive.

my husband and i ordered vegetarian food and all the vegetables were frozen. it was like they took frozen veggies, defrosted them, and then rolled them into a tortilla, put some beans and rice and the plate and called it dinner. it was gross. the chips and salsa were good. the only reason i would ever come back would be for a margarita or a beer w/ chips and salsa.

I have wanted to stop in here for a long time. Pulling in to the parking lot I was sad to see the chain competition in the way but alas, I was not faded by the lights. I saw La Costita and was happy. The outside is blah at best. In a strip mall. Gross, but no. Inside is the pearl. Inside is Mexico, Drink Specials and Awesome Food. I had the Tijuana Tacos. (From the menu) Another T.J. classic that's here to please your taste buds! Five soft corn tortillas, with carne asada, chopped onions, cilantro, sliced avocado and queso fresco, served with frijoles de la hoya (whole pinto beans). I wished I could have eaten 3 more orders but I barely got the one down. I almost laughed when the waiter asked if I would like something sweet. I left happy, full and thinking about when I can come back for tacos.

Shame on me for expecting a positive experience from a kitschy name tucked between Starbucks and Pizza Hut in a Westside strip mall. The place is very big and nicely decorated, the cashier guy and gal who brought water and chips were very nice. Then there's the food. Out of bag-like chips (don't tell me they're homemade just because they're warm) served with grocery store Pace-like salsa. There's a uniformity among bad salsas, go here for the definition. But they do serve the sauce in a cute little carafe, you know, for that French-like experience. The acclaimed Tortilla Soup was watered down with some rice at the bottom. $6.29 isn't a bad price, but oh so lacking in taste. West-sider's often comment on East Side food snobs, but places like this keep supporting the bland food acclaim.

The staff was very friendly but service was a bit slow but not his fault at all. It looks like they only have one person on until 5. One person for bartending and serving. The restaurant is a bit big for one person. They might trying seating people instead of a pick your seat option so the server isn't running around like crazy. Their happy hour is great. We got well drinks for $3. The food is not that great but we didn't expect much. Chips and salsa were both blah. This is a great place to go just for drinks on a happy hour.

The good: it was open! On a dark and rainy night, we were able to get food, while on a visit to Portland. The bad: the food was nothing special. We ordered enchiladas. The taste was quite bland. The accompanied rice and beans were spread on the bottom of the plate so as to cover it, but so thin! We left hungry and as light as my wallet which lost 26 dollars in the process... We should have gone to a food truck... I am told Portland has many good ones, and they sell inexpensive food because they don't have to pay for the rent or the decor.

Just went for Happy Hour today. I was in a group of 4, and I think we all agreed this was a 3-star experience. Food was meh. Not bad, but nobody was wowed. We devoured the warm chips, though. Also, we all thought that their drink prices were not in line with Happy Hour at all! $9 margaritas? I'm sorry, where am I? Maybe if they were fantastic margaritas, but no. I got the one that was made with guava puree infused with habaneros. I don't like overly sweet drinks, but I like sweet and spicy. My drink didn't have any kick to it at all. There was nothing habanero about it. One of my friends ordered Sangria and it was some pre-bottled stuff served with a garnish. Later during the meal, I ordered a Michelada, which I normally love and guzzle down. This one was so acidic, it gave me instant heartburn. I couldn't finish half of it. What have we learned? This place is a no-go for happy hour. Food is cheap but unspectacular. Drinks are expensive and disappointing. Nothing was downright bad, and the place is clean and has cute ambiance. My group had a ton of fun, but next week we will be going elsewhere.

Wanted to come here because of the outdoor seating listing. Been beautiful warm and sunny, and perfect for outdoor eating. However, the patio is only open "May-Sept". for shame...the dichotomy of what Portland says and what it actually is.

This place is overall just very average - good enough that I wouldn't stop coming here if in the area but not so great that I would recommend it to someone asking for great Mexican food. The food here is pretty consistent, and just like most average places, some dishes are better than others. They have a really good chicken soup. Their chips are decent but the salsa doesn't taste fresh or made in-house. It seems a little syrupy. I haven't experienced the best customer service here either. For example, once when I was seated I waited nearly ten minutes before I finally had to grab a waiter's attention to ask for menus. I also ordered my dish with chicken once (and I'm certain I said chicken because it's the only meat I eat and my husband heard me do so) and I had to send the dish back twice because they kept putting the wrong type of meat in it. They didn't apologize when this happened, nor did they offer to comp anything.

I always go to the bar here and lately they've been slipping. Slow service and the price for their really amazing food items is much higher then it should be. But good news! They have Margaritas bigger than my head, and they are amazing. Make sure you get one.

We had a great experience here!! The margaritas are exceptional!! Delicious and refreshing! The food was AMAZING! I had the Pollo al Costita and my husband had the 'wired steak'. Everything was served hot and fresh- even the chips!! Their salsa is fresh and tasty and the habañero salsa was hot and yummy! Our waiter was very attentive and friendly, even though he was quite busy bar tending for the restaurant as well. The waiter even ran out after me after I (stupidly) forgot my credit card on the table! Thank you again!! We will be back! DELICIOUS!!

  • Dave H.

Good food, and a passably good tequila selection, but very poor service. Have been there twice in the past three weeks, and on both occasions was made to feel like my wife I were intrusions. The waiter on both occasions was abrupt, rude, and really didn't have the slightest interest in being helpful or friendly. When the food came it was unceremoniously dropped on the table without the slightest attempt to see if we needed or wanted anything else. No welcomes, no thank yous, just rudeness. Plenty of fine Mexican restaurants in the city, so we'll avoid this one from now on. I recommend you do, too.

Since I'm new to this part of town, and this restaurant is so close by, I'll probably give it another chance. But on my first trip, I wished I had saved my money and eaten at the Baja Fresh two doors down instead. Service and ambiance were nice. But my enchiladas, rice, and beans were so, so bland. I'm not necessarily into spicy food, but give me some flavor, please!!

My rating is GARBAGE! I'm watching 3 employees, as I type this, play on their cell phones....their "hand made $9 margaritas" are a pre mix....come on....I'm leaving....this place is a joke....theres lots of authentic Mexicans that work here...that's about all thats authentic about this place....

Pleasant ambience in a restaurant with a newish feel. I liked the backlit iron artwork by the windows. Loved the cumbia and boleros they were playing. We ended up here only because the food cart Ochoas Lupitas (raved about on Yelp) on the Beaverton-Hillsdale Highway decided to hide from us despite driving three times up and down the block where it was supposed to be. All we could see there was a food cart named "Pork Chop City". La Costita is a safe bet for routine nonflashy Mexican fare. Per usual, JP ordered pozole and I ordered enchiladas. I wanted to try the Mexico City-style caldo (soup), but first asked our server if it contained cilantro. She said she would check with the chef. The server then came back and when I asked her if it contained cilantro, she tried to give a lawyerly answer, mentioning something about the soup only containing "flakes". I remarked that this was a simple yes or no question, did the caldo contain cilantro? She finally 'fessed up that the soup did contain cilantro. I ended up just ordering just the Mexican enchilada plate. Note: they have several sauces you can specify to top your enchiladas with. My order came with three enchiladas: chicken, cheese and shredded beef. They were all good, even the chicken enchilada made with canned chicken. Because whole beans are offered as an option to refries, I asked for them. Still, my order came out with refried beans. Sigh. I thought the shrimp pozole with chili sauce was very good (served in a very wide shallow bowl), though JP thought it was a tad salty. We were appreciative that complimentary chips and salsa were provided, but sweet baby Jesus, that salsa was most watery ever. Our young Caucasian waitress never came back to drop off our check so we had to get the manager to ring up our tab.

Nice to have in the neighborhood for margaritas and when you get lucky, they pack a serious punch and I have never been disappointed. Mellow and comfortable atmosphere with good food. Love the metal sculptures, hot salsa, and the staff are fabulous (especially the sweet hostess/greeter). Portland really does not have great Mexican food and from all my Mexican friends with food cred, they like La Costita for American Mexican food. Woodburn is really where I would go for more authentic but I am not dragging my ass down I-5 at whim...more like a convenient drive by when I am in the area. I have been to two of the locations and they differ greatly. The SW location is more relaxed and conducive for talk talk...the SE Sunnyside location is a cluster fuck with crowds, screaming children, and overall chaos with waiting parties in the small waiting area that creep into the closest booths and you feel like waiting, hungry patrons are breathing on your neck.

We were very pleased with our first trip to La Costita...drive by it every day and we were on our way to Baja Fresh when we decided we should try this place instead. Great atmosphere and decor, glass bar is neato! I can usually tell how good the rest of the meal will be by how good the salsa is...for the most part I was accurate this time. Mexican in the Northwest is just different from Mexican in the south...still good but different. I had the Tacos Al Pastor which is one of my favorite Mexican dishes ever...these were not a let down. I've had better, but these were tasty. A good selection of beers on tap as well, which isn't too common in Mexican restaurants. We will be back for sure!

I haven't been in here in a while but nothing has really changed. Service is really nice but shockingly slow. I was there for lunch with my young son and the place seemed pretty empty. It took 10 minutes to get water and chips and salsa and no napkins. It was another 10-15 minutes until the waitress came and took our order. Finally, my drink came with dinner about 15 minutes after that. I know Mexican restaurants are typically fast but this place was really slow by even high end dinner standards. 45 minutes to get food is really just too slow. I haven't even mentioned the food, which was comparable to Chez Jose around the corner. Barely palatable and that's coming from a guy that will eat anything Mexican. I highly recommend Acapulco Gold in NW Portland (no the one in Multnomah Village) for an alternative for cheap tex/mex....Sitting on the patio was nice.

Had to knock my previous score down one star--- what's up with the bland margaritas? Maybe I caught you on an off-night, but for $9.25 I want something more than a watered down slushie. 5 people ordered margaritas. 5 people were less than satisfied. A couple even ordered extra shots just so they could taste something. Disappointing. BUT- the food still rocks. Also, when I went last time the Salsa was kicking. This time, it was less kung-fu and more blehblehbleh.

Let's start out by saying that it is a really clean place with a really pleasant staff. The food was as good as any other mexican restaurant (I really haven't had "bad" mexican anywhere). The prices were really good. Service was great. We just kind of hung out for a bit after our meal and never once felt like the staff was annoyed by this. I would recommend it for sure if you're in the area.

I'm always looking for decent Mexican restaurants. The challenge these day is that I am being really health conscious which doesn't mix well when thinking about ,Mexican food but La Costita was perfect. I was so please by the variety of wonderful dishes that I could choose from minus cheese and carbs. Thoroughly enjoyed the unique ceviche with apples and celery and fresh white fish. The chicken with chipotle sauce was wonderful. Sangria with berries hit the spot too. Now I'd love to go back when I am eating more broadly because the tamales wrapped in banana leaves looked amazing. I know this is a chain but it was yummy. Service was friendly. Outside seating was great except for Starbucks being next door and people smoking.

La Costita has gone seriously downhill. Our dishes the last 3 times we've been there were terribly over-salted. It looked like they were putting very little care into the food, and a lot of it tasted stale and not at all fresh like it was the first few times we came. Service is pleasant, atmosphere is ok. Unfortunately will be looking for another Mexican restaurant

Bad dining experience here. We were recommended by a friend. Turns out she never really ate here. My wife and I tried lunch and it was a disaster to say the least. I order Fajita's. They did not taste good at all. Seasoned with a arabic spice or something. Asked for a few more tortilla's (received 2) and was charged for additional ones. For Mexican restaurants in Portland this is one of the worst I ever had. Bad service. Yes they have a pleasant ambience but you can't eat that. I would rather go to a whole in the wall that has good flavor and food.

I drove past La Costita 100 times without stopping, because it looks boring from the outside. But after I stopped once, it became the Mexican restaurant I go to the most. Not because it's the world's most innovative, necessarily, but because it's close to my house and has the following reliable perks: -- Good food, good portions, leave satisfied but not stuffed -- Very sweet staff who recognize you after your second visit -- Decent drinks, salsa, etc. that are consistently satisfying -- Good place to meet friends for happy hour, casual date, etc. I highly recommend the following two dishes: Caldo Tlalpeno (a stepped-up Tortilla soup with epazote, a delicious herb) and the Ensalda Rustica, made with nopales (cactus). Buena suerte y buen provecho. :)

Not your typical Mexican restaurant with hot plates of cheese and beans, but it's not one of the fancy Mexi-fusion places either. They have some different dishes that make La Cosita pretty good...like the Alambra del Rey. Good drinks too!

I'm glad I went here twice. The first visit the food and service was great. It was all ordered on the bar side off the happy hour menu. good prices too. I was planning on posting a great review... didn't get around to it. So I went again tonight, figured we'd eat on the bar side again since the atmosphere is better over there. The food was still good. However, WAY overpriced. And the service was absolutely terrible. They overcharged us for our drinks and we asked them to adjust the bill they said it was the right price. We pulled out their drink menu and showed them their own pricing and they said... "The menu is wrong"?!! WHAT??! They "took off the extra money" anyway for us. I'd be willing to give it one more shot here cause the food is good but this place has the vibe of "we will be closed soon anyways so who cares".

If you are looking for authentic Mexican food, this is not the place. It's okay, pretty standard, for anyone who prefers reaallllyyyy mild flavors. Not for me.

Great value and clean. GET THE HOT SALSA! (not the default one they give you at the table) YUMmmm! Good bar area with TVs. Still miss Juan Colorado.

phoned in an order. Not only did the person answering the phone direct me to a different location, the chicken enchiladas I ordered turned out to be cheese (and not very good at that). Besides giving me the wrong order, the same person who answered the phone thought it was funny that she put down my name as "Bean" instead of "Dean." In addition to insulting me, she was incompentent. Word of advice: Not a good idea to have a new, teenage employee in charge of the phones and take-out on Cinco De Mayo in a Mexican restaurant!

I came here about an hour before closing on a weeknight, and left more than disappointed. After simply driving by for so long, I thought I'd give their margaritas a shot. Well, all I can say is that there is not a single redeeming quality that I have to report about La Costita. And I really, really wanted there to be one. It looks great from the outside and seems like it would be a good above-average option for Mexican food. Unfortunately, the margaritas were so watered down I thought I had accidentally gone to Jamba Juice. And at $6+ a pop during happy hour, they were sooooooo not worth it!! The ceviche we had was even worse - I could barely taste a hint of lime and was remarkably bland. Also, the fish was fully cooked through!! Chips and salsa were not great either... I could really just go on for dayz about how boring the food was. Almost gives Salvador Molly's a run for its money! Aside from the food, the server was extremely rude and was clearly trying to push us out of the bar before closing time. Really gaiz, if like me you are still in the quest for the best Mexican food north of the CA border, you are better off skipping this place.

I'm glad this place is right across the street. Their soups are exceptional on a cold day, and their Tijuana Tacos are my favorite. The cool tropical bar and easy going bartenders make it a nice place to unwind after a busy day at work.

Good, not great food and decent margarita's. I wouldn't go out of my way to eat here, but I live within walking distance, so more often than not when we are feeling "mexican food", we go here. We don't leave disapponted. Good for the family.

Meh is probably the best description of this place. Nice and clean, the happy hour is cheap. But the food is at best below average and their margaritas taste like horrible. If it's not happy hour this place is super overpriced for what you are getting. Just avoid it.

Once again, my husbands fine dining of choice. Just finished lunch an hour ago, and I pretty much stand by my earlier review, with the following additions: Lunch service is stressfully slow. Or perhaps it seemed so because I was already running late...I don't know... The food remains comfortingly unchanged, but I still think they need to ease up on the sauce and the cheese, but all in all it was an unremarkable dining experience. My recommendation would be to stick to the dinner service.

Consistently good food, good margaritas, and the place is kid friendly. I have been going here once to three times a month for years and have always received good service. Great bar also if you are only looking to get drinks and appetizers (good TV's for sports). Outdoor patio in summer is nice as well. This is by far the best choice for Mexican food in SW Portland outside the downtown core

+1 for the best carne asada I've had in the PCNW. I think they need to amp up their tortillas a bit, but they are on to something with this asada!

I just had the opportunity last week to "test" their upcoming special, and watch out! It's spicy, delicious, definitely worth a try. Their authentic cuisine and focus on the quality of their food and ingredients makes La Costita one of my favorite Mexican-inspired joints. I also go to the Sunnyside location semi-frequently, and though the vibe is different, the food is equally tasty.

Decent for happy hour, I wouldn't go so far as to "meh" it simply because you'll be driving to find anything better in the area. Good strong Margaritas... plain jane tacos, quesadillas, and enchiladas. Some of the seafood they actually do pretty good like the shrimp adobo, salmon, and the rockfish tacos. Everything else is pretty middle of the road. I prefer it greatly over the chains like Jaun Colorado. Cross Terwilliger however and you are getting pretty close to Neustre Cucina, Authentica, Por Que No, etc...

I've actually been going here for years with various family and friends, even after moving to the east side of town. The staff has always been friendly and helpful. I haven't been in a while and decided on a whim that my husband needed to try it as he's never been. I'm 5 months pregnant and almost no food has sounded even remotely good for most of these months. But the Burrito Consteno (carne asada) hit the spot just like it always has. Always prepared perfectly, I could easily eat one of these every day. ALSO. Never had a strawberry lemonade at this restaurant before but because I can't seem to keep water down, juice is all I consume lately. The strawberry lemonade came in a giant beer stein and it was made to perfection. Normally when I have this drink at other restaurants it's either too tart with lemon or too sweet from the strawberry or sugar. It had perfect portions of both and I downed the whole thing... with a little help from the husband. I had to get on here and give them a great review because even after so long they still make quality food and provide great service. And in case you're wondering, the husband loved it!

May 2009: I think this is very consistent "Americanized" Mexican food with some great authentic twists if you order them. My husband LOVES the tacos Tijuana and eats them every time we go. The service is good 80% of the time. We eat here 2-3 times a month. Good salsa too. Just ate there again (Mid July '09), all the staff were different and it took over 45 minutes to get our food and the place was empty, I'm hoping this isn't a sign that something has changed, I'm very worried as I really like this place. I've lowered my rating from 4 to 3 stars.

Came here to have lunch with a friend. He always gets the fish tacos (Tacos de Pescado) so I had the same. The fish was kinda bland but if you put the black refried beans in the taco and the pico de gallo/salsa in it, it tastes so much better! We didn't really have that great of customer service but it's all good. The dude who took our drink order forgot about my hot cup of water. It was pouring and freezing out so I wanted something warm to drink. I'd check out other places before coming back. It was kinda pricey for bland/average at best food. The inside of the restaurant was pretty though! And there's tables and chairs outside for sunny weather.

La Costita has become our "too tired to cook" falllback recently. Its consitently good, with great chips and salsa. The barstaff is very friendly. The menu is one of the most varied in town mixing some native dishes with your basic Tex Mex. The Arroz con Pollo is a favorite of mine, and tehre carne Asada, is really well seasoned. The Tacos Al Pastor are pretty traditional, but for me that means a bit too much pineapple in the marinade.

My wife loves the taco soup and always gets a large and takes half home. We have been there maybe ten times and I have not repeated an order and have enjoyed every entree. Affordable, good service and wonderful food...we are happy we live near by.

This restaurant is consistently good. The food is tasty. They have a soup here called Caldo Tlalpeño that is soooo good. In the summer their outdoor patio is the place to be - nothing like soaking up the sun with a margarita in hand.

Mexican Cuisine

If you enjoy Taco Tuesday, then you have officially fallen in love with the Mexican Food. The main grain of Mexican cuisine is maize. Also known as corn, maize is grown for the past 9000 years after the crop was discovered by the people in Mayan civilization. Mexican empire flourished when they started growing beans, tomatoes, chili pepper, sweet potato and cactus. Till this date these ingredients are used in cooking authentic Mexican dishes and drinks.

Great use of spices, fresh chili pepper dishes like fajitas, tortilla chips, corn chips, salsa, chimichangas, burritos, nachos and quesadillas are invented in America. But when you are looking for authentic Mexican food then you must find a restaurant in the city that serves Rajas con Queso, Garbanzo in a Guajillo Chile Sauce, Pork Filled Chiles Rellenos, Chiles en Nogada, Molcajete Salsa, Pico de Gallo and Frijoles de la Olla. An eye-opening fact – Mexican don't like their food hot. They use fresh chili and other spices to create a flavor that lingers in your mouth.

Mexican food is great for those who are Gluten Intolerant as they use Corn instead of wheat in most of their dishes. Also, you can easily find many beans based Mexican dishes. Another dish which didn't get similar glory as tacos or nachos is the Mexican hot chocolate. If you love something hot on a chilly day, then go for Mexican Hot Chocolate. On merry days, you can enjoy the authentic Mexican Drinks like Tequila, Mezcal, Tecuí, Sotol, Bacanora, Charanda, Posh O Pox, Puebla and Pulque. Mexican Cuisine is for people who enjoy strong drinks and hearty meals.
