I had this little corner cafe bookmarked for a while. I had driven past it many times, but hadn't actually gone in until I moved close by. It's run by a Greek family. A married couple and their grown son. I feel as if I'm being welcomed into their home. They remember your name, what you do, and order. They like to chit chat with their regulars, which is nice. I feel like I'm having lunch at my aunties. I like simple diner food, especially at their prices. It's cash only, but full meals can be had for under $5. As others have mentioned it's not fancy, but it's straight forward fare. The restaurant is tiny but clean. My favorite things so far are the soups . I've had four, which might be the only ones they offer. The ones that I have tried have been orzo (rice shaped pasta in a tomato vegetable broth), lentil, Navy bean, and a chicken & rice (with lemon which is very Greek). They make them in-house. They're warm, delicious and perfect with a grilled cheese. They charge $1.25 for a cup, or $2 for a bowl. The grilled cheese is $2.25. It's tough to beat for lunch. Pure comfort food. I tried the fish & chips dinner last time. It comes with soup or salad along with bread and butter. I knew it was frozen cod, but it was still much better than some that I've had for double the price (ahem, Low Brow). My tab was $5.25. I posted a picture of their breakfast specials. Breakfast is only available until 11 AM, and they're closed Sunday. Monday through Friday their hours are 6 AM-2 PM, and Saturday 6 AM to noon I believe. I still need to try their pancakes. They look pretty tasty! I highly recommend trying them if you re looking for an old school dining experience.

Great little dive in Portland, owners are friendly and the food is great. The price is fantastic, breakfast for three was $20! Ensure you stop by and try this place out....

Five star diner-style old school homey breakfast and lunch joint. Cash only but you won't need much of it. Great food at 1970s ultra low prices. The Greek couple who run the place have been there for 42 years: he cooks and does dishes, she waits tables, buses and runs the register. We had the chicken fried steak breakfast and a John's Special. All ready in no time and not a single thing to complain about. Ten or so stools at the formica counter, with table seating for maybe 16-20. Mechanical register, 8-track stereo/radio playing....great feel to the place.

First things first. How is this place called John's Coffee Shop on Yelp when it is clearly called John's Cafe? Inquiring minds want to know. Moving on. John's Cafe definitely epitomizes "Old School Portland" in every way possible. From the look of the place to the food that they serve (and the prices they serve it at) to the owners. This is what I imagine eating was like when my parents were kids. These are all very very good things. Where else in Portland can you get a hamburger and fries for $3.50? Where? I don't even think you could go to McDonald's and get the same. I of course had to get the Double Hamburger, but I'll tell you about that in a minute. I am so happy this place still exists and not too far from the Pearl either which is completely strange. Upon walking in for an early lunch on a Friday morning (guess I could have had a late breakfast) I was immediately greeted by the woman behind the counter. I originally was going to take a seat at the counter, but decided to grab a booth at the front of the restaurant (this place is tiny) as I thought there might be some good people watching. The place was sadly empty when I walked in, but that changed within 20 minutes of my arrival. I was asked if I wanted coffee which I did not. A menu was given to me and I looked at the choices. Burgers and sandwiches make up most of the menu along with breakfast eggy things for those that hate lunch. i could not believe the prices here. $1.25 for a cup of soup. The aforementioned $3.50 for a burger and fries. That is just crazy. Being that it was a cold day I started out with a cup of their soup of the day which on this day was navy bean. I don't know if they make the soup here, but for $1.25 I really don't care. It was hot and tasty and that is all I really cared about. For my main I had the double hamburger and fries ($4.50). Yes only $1 more will get you an extra patty. Don't get me wrong. These are your standard fast food type flat patties. Nothing spectacular about this burger at all. The fries are crinkle cut which also seems pretty old school. This is diner food. Comfort food. Nothing is organic or sustainable. This is how our parents and grandparents ate when they were young. There is something to be said about that. In total my bill came to $5.75. It is amazing to me that I can eat for well under $10 and be quite satisfied. One thing that I was disappointed with is that they don't do milkshakes or malts here. This seems like a place that would do such a thing, but no such luck. If they had that, I'd probably move in.

This place I love Love LOVE. Delicious and great in prices and always fast and friendly. I've gone there four times in one month. It's small, classic cafe. The two owners have been there over thirty years.... I can see why. Total Portland, with an old flare

After years of searching, I finally found what I thought Portland lacked: a good, cheap, greasy-spoon Greek diner. Much as I love the myriad of creative breakfast and brunch options in Portland, sometimes I just want bacon, eggs, and potatoes. While there are no shortages of places where one can have this great combination in Portland, usually they charge far more than I'd normally pay for such a dish at a proper diner (I'm looking at you, Hotcake House). John's Café makes this meal well, and provides it quickly and cheaply. John's is a tiny place, run by a Greek couple, who keep the grill running with cheerful gusto. It's got a friendly atmosphere and is great for people-watching, between its blue-collar vibe and its swanky surroundings in the Pearl. Remember, cash only, people. The eggs were fried just as I ordered them (over medium). Good, solid grub. Not quite as good as those at some of the fancier joints in Portland (or at some of the better diners I've been to East of the Mississippi), but still a good choice. I wasn't as impressed by the hash browns when I had them (they seemed to be the from-frozen shredded ones to me), though they were still serviceable, especially once I put a second dash of salt on them and ran them through the bit of yolk that had run over to that side of the plate. The bacon was top-notch. Chewy and smoky, yet crispy at the bite. Just like good butcher-bacon should be. The woman waiting the tables recommended it highly for good reason. Like all good diner toast, John's Café's was slathered in butter. Wish they had raspberry jam among the selections to go with it, but that's a quibble. Finally, the coffee was decent diner coffee, and was constantly being refilled. Is John's the best diner I've ever been to? No. But not only would I go back, but I would even make the trek from Southeast out to the Pearl to go there. That's how much I love a proper diner. I wish Portland had more places like John's.

John's Cafe is run by a husband and wife duo who are immediately welcoming. It's a typical old-school style diner and I felt like I was stepping back in time or to a movie set in the 70s. It was fun peering around at all of the old regalia. Everything is spotless and clean. The meals are all simple (I'm not sure the menu has been updated this decade) but hearty with adequate size servings and coffee always being topped up.

Great throwback to the 70's. Cash only cafe that plays music via a real 8 track radio that doesn't look like it's been moved since the place opened in 1972. The wood paneling on the walls hasn't changed either. Nothing complex on the menu and nothing over 7 bucks! The hash potatoes are great; fresh cut in little cubes and fried until golden brown in real butter. Same with the meats; cooked until golden brown in real butter. No free wifi as the DeLorean that that you drove here took everyone back 40 years before it was even a concept. I you like the old school experience, this is the place. If you prefer vegan, gluten free organic, you might want to continue your search..

Cash only but Best $5 breakfast in downtown Portland. 2 big pancakes, egg, 2 pieces of bacon. Coffee is a little thin but with this price go get a cup of real Joe up the street. Small place takes you back in time to a simplistic life. Nice family runs he place but leave your attitude at the door or else they will call you out.

This is my favorite place in Portland. It's completely no frills, small town diner, middle America grandpa food. It's not fancy, it's not gourmet, it's just regular old comfort food for a tiny price. The family who runs it are no nonsense and will not put up with your crap. If you're a classist a-hole, like a couple of the other reviewers, and can't stand to eat in the presence of poor people, then stay away. The pancakes are big, thick and delicious. I highly recommend them. The hashbrowns are good and greasy, the sausage links are superb and the cook knows how to cook the perfect egg, any way you want it. I usually come here early in the morning, so I can't speak about their lunch, though the one time I did get lunch here, I had a fantastic old school ham sandwich (White sandwich bread, ham, mayo. They don't mess around.) with a glass of milk and it simultaneously made my day and made me miss my Midwestern grandma.

Saw this little place while driving around with my boyfriend and decided to stop in and have some breakfast. Best decision ever! Prices are great and you get plenty of food! I had the French toast, which was so amazing! Everything was very delicious, we definitely plan on coming back again!

John and his wife are the Best - Salt of the Earth. Not only do they provide you with a warm place for your early morning meal, the meal itself is made well, made quickly, and inexpensive to boot. They also are very kind-hearted toward the many street folks and troubled people who find their way in. Patronize this place, if you want to feed your soul.

I came here because of the great reviews and was horribly disappointed. The food was decent and fairly cheap, but everything else was just terrible. The staff was chatting up this homeless looking couple talking about marijuana and who knows what else, and we were basically ignored the whole time. My boyfriend and I sat at the table long after it was cleared just waiting to pay so we could get the hell out of there. Will not be returning.

This is THE place to get good breakfast near the Pearl for less than $10. This morning I had 2 eggs, toast, and hash browns for $3.95. All prepared quickly by two people who seem to own the place. The food isn't anything super special but the prices reflect that, unlike other establishments nearby. Couldn't figure out where the owners are from, they have thick accents and are very nice. On a weekday morning around 8:30 there was one other customer in the entire place. They only take cash but there is an ATM a block north on Broadway. No complaints here.

The only time I can see myself darkening the door here again is if I'm extremely hungover and desperate for food and also broke. The food is mediocre at best, but very cheap, so it's easy to let the quality slide. A side result of the low cost is the clientele, which slanted extremely heavily towards the "tweaking" sort when we visited. This is one of those places that gets romanticized because of how "old school" it is, but really it's just cheap and seedy. The food reminds me of what schools used to serve in the cafeteria. We will definitely NOT be returning.

Plenty of bang for the buck. Family run business. Very inexpensive. We seem to go there at least once a month. If you want fine dining don't come to Johns, if you want a great double burger on the cheap, this is the place for you.

$3.95 for cheeseburger and fries that are actually pretty good. Friendly service. They have regulars. People come in, hang their coat on the rack, and joke around like family. Something I don't see so much in Southern California so it's kinda nice.

A no-frills kind of place. I was quite pleased with The basic bacon eggs toast and coffee breakfast. The bacon was crispy and plentiful. The hash browns were hot and crunchy on the outsides, my eggs were cooked to order just right. $6.25 was my total. I've been here a few times and have never been disappointed.

"Diamond in the rough" Great little place where you can get good food for next to nothing price wise! The food is good and the owners are nice. This place has regulars that have been going there for many years, so that says something about it. John's is a great place to go get a good meal, regardless of the time of day as both breakfast and lunch are good. I will definitely keep coming here!

I found this by accident. It was a down to earth café place that you always see in the movies. It was old and the staff was very good at providing directions to where I wanted to go. The food was cheap and the coffee was wonderful. I highly recommend coming here, although I found this on foot, and I cannot recommend how one parks to go to this wonderful, relic of the past, place. The place does take cash and I did not see a card machine.

Sat down and had to listen to the owners son cause and you very foul language.. I would not take kids here.. Food was fair for a fair price.. Just got tired of hearing F bombs!

Owned and operated by a family that has been there 30+ years, John's Cafe is a great little place to grab breakfast / burgers for a really great price. Very sweet and very simple and very cheap. Cash only is sometimes inconvenient, but it's so cheap that is rarely a problem. Old fashioned and quaint .

Good diner lunches at very reasonable prices. I've been going here with some co-workers for burgers/gyros and fries or plate dinners like chicken-fried steak, veal cutlet, pork cutlet, Salisbury steak (with mashed potatoes and green beans). It's solid lunch-counter food for next-to-nothing. We love this place.

Good Golly. I can hardly believe I'm the first to review this dive (and I mean that in the nicest possible way). I have spent a lot of my time in Portland complaining about the lack of cheap breakfasts. It is as though eggs get exponentially more expensive the further West one travels. While I hate to play the, "where I come from" game, it has to be said: Where I come from you can get breakfast for less than $4.00. This is also true at John's Coffee Shop. The husband and I had our anniversary breakfast here (yeah, we're fancy) and were not disappointed. Nothing fancy. Eggs, bacon, toast and hash browns for $4.00. The best part was the "ambiance." The fixtures, stools and booths are obviously original, and it appears the owners are too. A charming woman from...the Ukraine? Romania? An Eastern Block country? waited on us. A homeless man wandered in off the street and started yelling Bible verses and the charming woman chased him out with WITH A BROOM AND YELLED, "Shoo! Shoo!" I can't make this stuff up. Word of warning. Coffee is wretched. Awful. Bring your own if that kind of thing is important. I doubt they would care.
