We stayed here May 14-17. The accommodations were wonderful. This is by far the best B & B we have stayed. The grounds were beautiful and the food was awesome. We were a short walk to the Pearl District with plenty of restaurants and bars. Pam and Carl were very nice and extremely hospitable. Next time we are in Portland, we are staying at the Heron Haus.

This truly lovely space amidst other large gorgeous homes in the Portland hills was just what we needed to escape the heat of Arizona. The home itself is clean, comfortable, and so very pleasant. The owner was out of town, but in her stead was a lovely welcoming couple who took great care of us. The Rogue room has an extra sitting area which was nice, but we loved sitting outside on the patio listening to the fountain and the birds playing in the trees. Close to downtown and a nice walk I might add! Breakfasts were good, not great but very good. Though the french toast was a big hit. I think you'll love it.

The Rose room smells strongly of cat urine, which we endured for a week on our anniversary. Tub drain had a bunch of hair in it which caused the water to back up in the tub. I left it open for the cleaners to see and may have mentioned it but it was never cleaned and I ended up doing it myself. Gross. Pam is a typical frosty, dislikes to be bothered Bed and Breakfast owner. My husband phrases it that BnBs make you feel like you stay at the owner's convenience not your own. Overall, I don't feel we received our money's worth.

Four girlfriends and I stayed 2 nights at the well located, beautiful Heron Haus and the photos don't lie- it is well maintained, comfortable and just a gorgeous house. We loved our 3rd floor rooms- plenty of space and natural light for all. The location too is fantastic- possible to just walk down to 23rd for some coffee, shopping and dining out. I'm afraid I cannot say wonderful things about the owners and our interactions with them. We were not warmly greeted; they had us pay right when we got there before we even made it past the door and got to put our things down in our rooms and use the toilet after a long journey getting there (again not such an amazing welcome,) didn't make us feel like we could ask for things we might need- like more hot water for tea when it ran out and had a small 30-minute window for breakfast from 8:30 - 9am, which isn't my idea of vacation. We made it down closer to 8:55 and I have to say you really must plan on being there at 8:30 if you want a hot breakfast- everything felt nearly cold, including the eggs. My friend asked if she could have her eggs fried hard- and they said no, eggs were already cooked- just for example. I have an egg allergy and let them know ahead of time- and despite reconfirming this each morning was still brought baked goods with eggs in it (which I only know as I asked again, "sure this doesn't have eggs in it!?") I wish there was more of a welcomed feel as they've gone to great lengths to physically have a beautiful place- but it felt like we weren't really welcome- and as if we were inconveniencing them by our merely being there. It was a shame as we would have loved to made it our place when we come to Portland for girls weekends. I'd give the location 5 starts, rooms and house 4.5 stars; the hospitality and food 1 star

Wow! This is my only experience staying at a Bed and Breakfast, so it is hard for me to tell if this is the most amazing one ever, or if the whole concept is great. The owners were extremely friendly. When we first arrived we were shown around the Inn and given lots of restaurant recommendations. Had we needed anything else, I'm sure it would have been promptly taken care of. The room itself was great. There were lots of books about, and I was tempted to spend the entire (short) vacation reading! The bed was extremely comfortable and there were quite a few naps. Sleeping has never felt so good. I loved the breakfast. There was a great selection of tea (which I also took advantage of at night) and there was excellent variation in the breakfast from day-to-day. Stuffed brioche French toast? Yes please! There were lots of other great details. At night there was a bottle of Port out. There were tasty cookies. There was a fireplace in the room. The location was great. It was a short walk to a convenient metro stop, but there were also a lot of things just in walking distance. If I ever have the opportunity to return to Portland, I will definitely stay here again.

2 nights. Over $500. Pricey! Location is OK fellow travelers, but for the price you can stay at a really swanky hotel. We only stay at B&B for a special treat and we have stayed in enough B&B's to know, this is not the place. Keep looking. Our room on top floor was very "tired" looking. View was a window over the desk. Old decor (80's style), and TERRIBLE showers! (Barely enough pressure to wash, 5 min to get warm enough to shower and I Hate to waste water). We told innkeeper while we were there to make sure it was addressed for the next guest. No compensation offered. The innkeeper did not introduce herself when we arrived and we did not see her again until the second morning. (Had to stay the minimum of 2 nights or we would have left after the first night). Bummer. So again for 2 nights, $550 with tax, you can stay at the best hotel in Downtown. Side note. We did directly ask for compensation twice for the barely functioning showers after leaving, no response. I would expect after they saw how bad it was we would get an apology at least. Nothing. This was the worst value of any Bed and Breakfast we have ever stayed in. We spent the whole time wishing we could have stayed longer in the hostel across town that was amazing.

The good: very nice Tudor house in a quaint Victorian neighborhood, 5 minute walk to great restaurants and shopping on 21st and 23rd, large comfortable room, very clean, with gas fireplace. Price is very reasonable compared to available hotel options. The not so good: as one other commenter mentioned, the breakfast setup (30 minute window between 8:30 and 9, one sit down service for all guests) was really inconvenient. Perhaps the food was good, and we were actually really looking forward to it when we booked, but we didn't get a chance to try it! A buffet would definitely be an improvement. Now there are tons of breakfast options within walking distance, so not too big of a deal, but still, the whole point of booking a B&B is, you know, breakfast! Also, the place definitely seems better suited for an older crowd, as a younger 30 something couple we felt a little out of place, and the hostess even seemed quite surprised when she saw us arrive!

Birthday getaway surprise! We stayed in the uppermost suite at the Heron Haus Bed & Breakfast and had a nice time. The bed was comfortable and the breakfast (french toast) was divine. The hosts were helpful, but left us alone. The walk down to NW 23rd was short and nice since it the B & B is in a residential neighborhood. I do recommend taking a flashlight if you walk back at night since it is easy to get lost.

We spent a couple of nights in this well located B&B. Our room was on the top level and very spacious! A great sitting area, room for a pack and play, a desk or two, fireplace, and a view to die for! The location was great. You can walk down to the streetcar on 23rd to take you in to the Pearl District or city proper. $2 for an all day ticket is amazingly cheap. Or you can explore locally along the interesting stores and restaurants of 23rd. Although hilly we walked over to the rose garden, Japanese garden and Holocaust memorial at Washington Park. The Oregon Zoo is there too but we skipped that on this trip. Breakfast was great, delicious and just the right size. Pam and Carl, the Innkeepers are friendly and knowledgeable about Portland and the local area. They recommended a great bakery (Kens) that does pizza on a Monday night. We were happy to have some time away in Portland as we had not really experienced much of it. Now we cannot wait to come back again.

I would say this was a 2.5 star accomodation and 4.5 star location. My Hubbie and I just returned from a fantastic trip in Portland. We stayed here for 5 nights. Sadly, it was not as advertised. If you are booking the Kulia room, you must know that the jacuzzi tub is NOT a part of this room. When we got there and asked about it, we were told that the tub was removed a year prior and that it was possible our computer grabbed cached info from previous. However, it is listed on their website, when going thru the availability function, as the "only room with a spa". We usually book king beds when traveling, but opted for this queen bed room, specifically for the spa. The owner, however, was kind enough to move us to a king room for 2 nts, other nights were booked. But we were forced back in the queen room the last 2 nts. This room is also extremely loud. We heard our upstairs neighbors speak, walk back and forth starting at 7am, and even urinate. We could hear everyone talking in the dining room as well. A barking dog would start up at about 10am, followed by what sounded like construction on the house. The tub was replaced with a shower about 2'x2', So good luck ladies shaving your legs. Breakfast was pretty good, perfectly seasoned dishes, but if you don't make their 30 min time slot, you are SOL. And they don't deliver to the room. To top it off, we used their recommended cab company to get to the airport, to discover a patron had barfed in this cab a night prior. We almost gagged ourselves. Not the B&B's fault, but it was just the icing on the cake.

My husband and I stayed two nights in Kulia at the beginning of a trip to Oregon, and then left Portland for five days and returned to stay one night in Ko (another bedroom on the 2nd floor). We were not sorry we did. Both rooms were spacious and very clean (I check the corners and baseboards) with two walls of windows and nice extras like good soap, bottled water, flat screen TVs in-room, and homemade cookies and warming port wine in the dining room after returning from a brisk walk in the cold PNW Spring evening air. But the crowning glory of Heron Haus is the breakfasts! We hungrily anticipated our meals each morning, enjoying the delicious and strong coffee as we waited for 9 AM. to creep closer. Finally, the gracious innkeeper, Pam, and I shared many delightful conversations during breakfast and at check-in and out, and her recommendations for good restaurants on 23rd and 21st Avenues were spot on. There are so many reasons that this B&B is THE place to stay in Portland. We are spoiled for Heron Haus and most likely won't stay anywhere else when we come to Portland. Need more be said?

a lovely, stately, historic mansion with amazing views around Portland in the Northwest/Alphabet district. It's walking distance to the eatery areas and even to the water front and the Forest Park walk including the rose garden. The rooms are uniquely and tastefully decorated. Pam, the owner, is a wonderful cook and breakfasts are delicious and creative. The proprietors were great in their recommendations of places to eat, walk, and experience and we met the most interesting people who were staying at the B&B as well. Do stay here if you like the B&B experience.

My husband, daughter and I stayed two nights at the Heron Haus in one of the third floor rooms. What a beautiful view. The location is perfect for just parking your car and experiencing the city. Breakfast was great with lots of yummy coffee and the innkeepers gave us some excellent recommendations on food and things to do. The current innkeepers have been there for about a year and you can tell they really have a love and appreciation for their historic home and their new careers as innkeepers. Keep up the good work, we can't wait to come back.

I love this B&B. My husband and I have spent 3-4 nights at a time here, during 6 different visits to Portland over the last 17 years. We loved it when it was run by the previous owners, and we love it even more now, under the care of the current innkeepers. Pam is a very helpful and welcoming innkeeper. The food is much better than it was when the B&B was run by the previous owner. The rooms are spacious and well supplied. The beds are lovely and comfortable. We love the location, close enough to downtown but in a much quieter and upscale area near Washington Park and Forest Park. We always hike both when we are in Portland and this B&B is close enough to walk to the trails. The only reason I am giving Heron Haus four stars, rather than five, is because on our last trip, a couple with their 21 month old toddler was staying at the B&B and the fussy toddler kind of ruined the ambiance of the place. I understand that it is the nature of toddlers to cry, throw things, generally throw a fit. This is why they should not be staying in a B&B like Heron Haus. Some B&B's have separate cottages, or allow patrons to eat in their rooms. This is not the case with Heron Haus. Heron Haus has one dining room and all must eat breakfast at the same time in this one small dining room. A crying toddler, making lots of toddler noise caused all the adult patrons to have to yell over the din she was creating. When I spend over $200 a night to stay at a B&B, this is not what I am expecting. I really don't want to have to listen to fussy children at night, crying at the breakfast table in the morning, and running back and forth in their room crying in the afternoon. The former innkeepers didn't allow small children to stay at Heron Haus, and I hadn't previously realized that the current innkeepers do. This may sound harsh to young parents, but this is my honest opinion. I have been a young parent in the past, so it is not as if I hate toddlers or do not understand that this is their means of communication. I raised 4 children, and have two grandsons I love too. I love having our family's babies stay in our own home with us. I even love their fussing. But I realize others do not share my familial tolerance for the fussiness and noise of our own young offspring. When our own children were toddlers, we left them at home with a sitter when we stayed at a B&B, out of consideration for the other guests. Our now grown son and his wife do take their baby with them when they travel, but when they stay at a B&B, they choose one which has a separate cottage or separate wing and eat in their own room, so their baby won't disturb others. It seems to me that innkeepers should consider their other guests when making decisions about allowing babies and toddlers to share rooms in one building with others, and forcing all the adults to eat at the same tables with the toddlers. If the B&B does not have separate quarters for babies, perhaps children under 5 should not be allowed. In the future I will be more careful to check the policies about such things before booking reservations at B&Bs, even ones where we've stayed previously. I hope the current innkeepers at Heron Haus will reconsider their policies about allowing babies and toddlers..
