This is a great neighborhood pub. It's location is somewhat residential so most patrons are local who walk or bike on over. It is friendly and homey. The food is really good! I am a huge fan of the nachos and start to go through withdrawals if too much time passes between nacho indulgences. Elaine's big salad is another favorite (but mostly because of the Seinfeld reference.) They'll put feta cheese on almost anything you ask them too and therefore, I love them. Monday's are trivia night which is always fun. They have horrific prizes that I fear I might win someday. Warm weather means sitting outside and playing, or at least watching a corn holing match. Good people, good food and drinks, and good fun. Please don't officially change your name to "the Stone". That is just trying too hard.

This divey little street pub is homey and cheap. Welcomes visitors with wit and charm so customary for southeast establishments.

Everything I love in a neighborhood bar: friendly service, decent eats, and cold drinks. Most importantly, the Stone is welcoming, with a sense of humor about itself. For the young and old alike.

The bar for locals, good food and a great happy hour. Your always bound to find good conversation with the guests or employees. Going out for a drink by yourself here that will never make you feel alone.

this is a very friendly pub, with moderately priced yummy foods and a welcoming interior. i had a gin&tonic and the turkey and avocado sandwich, which was, by the way, perfectly grilled. there are a variety of different types of people at this bar, which is a nice change, as many bars often become homogeneous in their crowds. a little on the smoky side for my taste, but that's my only complaint.

Love this place. Laid-back and relaxed atmosphere, friendly patrons and efficient staff. Notable food includes their BBQ Chicken quesadilla, veggie nachos, great soups and big burgers. Nice place to hang out at the weekends on a rainy day or sit out in the summer at the tables and watch cornhole matches.

I love this place. Nice relaxed feeling, great staff, excellent food, outdoor seating and good drinks. If you are looking for a great pub, this is it.

Love this place! It's down the street from our house. We try to go at least once a week. The service, food and ambience is terrific for a neighborhood pub. We loved trivia night. First time doing it and it was a blast. My only suggestion is to revisit the tap list offerings. I'd love to see some more daring stuff like a DIPA, imperial stout, maybe an American strong ale. Something other than what you can get anywhere in Portland. You'd have my undying loyalty then!!! Keep up the great work folks!

My friend who lives in the neighborhood brought me here because I said I was craving a hamburger. Well, lets just say I wish I lived in the neighborhood too cause I'd be eating here all the motha-fuckin-time! The burger was actually GRILLED as in grilled on a BBQ out back. It was cooked to perfection! Juicy, saucy, fresh, and filling. I ordered the bleu cheese burger and they put a hot wing sauce on it as well as chipotle mayo. UMMMMMM! It's my new favorite so check it out!!! Oh, and they have beer and booze too. Enjoy!

Inexpensive beer, unpretentious atmosphere, friendly staff, and gargantuan burgers all come together to create this gem of a neighborhood pub. The Stone is a laid-back place to hang out and spend some well-earned weekend hours. They have a few flat-screen televisions, all showing some male-bonding team activity or another, and when I was there, most patrons were keeping at least one eye on a screen. Mostly, though, people were grabbing some grub and catching up. Occasionally conversation would cross over from private to eliciting the opinions of, well, everyone in the joint. Did I mention how friendly this place is? If I had just one eensy-weensy wish, it's that they would serve French fries with their damned-good burgers. I'll happily eat a salad, but sometimes the call of the fry crescendos in my head until the cacophony is too strong to ignore. When that's not the case, though, the Stone is definitely a go-to burger and beer locale.

Had a really great time! Came in on Sunday had an exceeeellllent Bloody Mary (or 3!) and their breakfast sandwich special was great. The bartender let me make vegetarian subs for free and it was quite the deal for the food. Had a lot of fun, everyone there seemed to be my kinda crowd. Will totally come back. It's right around the corner so I might become a regular :)

Wanted to go for 4 stars, but for a pub/neighborhood bar this place is as good as it gets so went 5. Great menu, food is very good, and many great vegetarian options for the herbivores. Friendly neighborhood feel, Johnny on the spot bartender, great bar food, does it get any better?

The Gladstone is the quintessential local hang out. Every neighborhood has a Gladstone. Lucky for these SE Portland, they have the actual Gladstone. You'll always find the atmosphere chill, whether inside or out. With ample patio space and warm weather, why not gravitate outside? Service is a hit. They're always checking up and keeping the drinks filled. The food is okay and very affordable... think $5 meals. "The Stone" can easily be deems on of those go to spots for you and your friends.

Great local neighborhood bar is the best way to describe this place. I would respectfully disagree with the categorization of dive-bar. I would say it is at least a notch above that category but then again I guess that could be based on how you define a dive-bar. I have been in much more dive-y bars in Portland.... They have a pretty good selection of beers on tap. I believe they usually have 8-10 at any given time. Happy Hour goes to 7 pm every day and all day on Sunday. Definitely a place to check out in SE. I also love that they play cornhole off to the side of the pub. That is awesome!

Went out with my friends here last night. Wasn't the bar we meant to go to, we just ended up here. The drinks were pretty good, and the food was too. The bar tender was funny and amazing. He made my night. I could go here again.

Glastone Street Pub has become my food booty call, apparently. Four times in one week, I probably shouldn't admit that. And somehow I left there the other night completely covered in mustard, no thanks to anyone for not pointing that out. Or maybe thank you everyone for not judging me for that? Yes, that's better. Here's some examples of the GSP Booty Call rationalization process: "Well, I know you're not that into it, but it's late and you're drunk. GSP won't mind and probably wants to party anyway." "I only like GSP after midnight." "Perfect, it's 12:01 and I'm not wearing a bra. It's twenty feet away, I am not putting one on. GSP won't notice." "Listen. We'll just go again this one time, then bail, and you gotta take their number out of your phone. Seriously, no more to-go orders, GSP will just keep thinkin' you want to get back together again, or at least meet in the daylight sometime." "Is it wrong if I pretend I don't know GSP in the morning?" And so forth. Guess who wins every time: GSP. I'll hand it to them- after many menu updates, they've got the current one down pat. Solid. I have never had anything I didn't like there. I've come to be addicted to their snacks, but I'm not ready for them to meet my mother. Oh, and now my roommate's in on this one, too, so we've had several food booty call run-ins over here on Gladstone Street... aaawwwwk-waard! They totally know what we're after. Holler.

Man...I know I went here in fact I even checked in, but I have to admit I had a ton to drink by the time I showed up so I don't remember much about this place! The pictures look familiar and I remember having fun, but I cannot for the life of me remember what I drank! Anyway, beer is always good so you can't get less than 4 stars! I know it wasn't my favorite stop along the way, but beer is good!

Gladstone Street Pub is your typical neighborhood dive bar. I'm glad it's in my neighborhood. I feel like there are some regulars that have been coming here for so many years you have to work your way in a little bit - the first couple of times we went we definitely felt out of the loop. But in a good way. As in, these people are protective of their neighborhood pub-ness and need to feel you out a bit. The food is pretty good. In my few times there I've sampled the bbq chicken nachos, the grilled cheese with tomato soup (yum!), and the garden salad. Prices are great and there are ample TVs for keeping up on your sport of choice. Service is ok, but sometimes you have to seek them out to get something, which isn't a big deal. In these types of places you should be alright with getting out of your seat and walking up to the bar. All in all, a very solid, relaxing hang out for Sunday football.

  • Christine D.

My friend and I are always looking for a place to hang out and have a drink outside. She likes to smoke and I don't so we look for some place with a patio. Yesterday was a particularly nice day and we stopped by the pub. We took a seat outside and had a couple of cocktails and appetizers and watched the traffic and the people walk by. The food was great I had the hummus plate which on the menu promised olives but I didn't receive any. I did get a nice helping of hummus, pitas, tomatoes and cucumbers. The service was good but I felt bad for the one bartender that had all the inside people as well as us outsiders.

The Gladstone Street Pub is the "ultimate" in so many ways: Ultimate Burger... Ultimate list of drink specials... Ultimate real baseball bar... Ultimate disappointment... strange considering how important those three things are in my experience as a sports bar nut. I find that the staff consistently serves the locals with an A+ touch but anyone not playing dice or cards gets a like a C-. Sat at the bar 20 minutes last night with my card out and it wasn't even busy. Some of my baseball buddies swear that every tab comes with an extra beer for good measure. I've experienced this too, too often for it to be a coincidence. A lot of flack from the staff too when you ask them to reconsider the extra items you didn't even ask for. Worst of all, I feel like it caters to those few regulars. There is one waitress who is consistently rude and seems to have a chip on her shoulder about what kind of people come into a sports bar. A few really anti-social types seem to get away with hostile behavior because they're local. Feel like it could tighten up a few of those loose ends.

This is a nice dive-y bar. Decent food and nice beer selection. If I was closer I would probably go more often.

  • Dave H.

My experience here wasn't bad by any means, but I can't rate it above average. The servers were cool and took care of things quick. They were busy, but they kept up. That's a good thing. The nachos were... Well... Meh. Not bad, but not good. They were a solid 1 of 2, or 3 of 6, or 5 of 10, or 34 out of 70. (I figured I could be nice with the last one, they weren't bad, I'll just never crave them.) The atmosphere wasn't bad, wasn't good. Just kind of a forgettable place. I'm sure I'll be back, but I probably will be surprised to find out I've already reviewed it. In a word: meh.

Reasons why I like the Gladstone pub: - Monday night trivia is fun and not SO hard you walk out feeling like a failure. - Wait staff....the guys are cool. And the women are hot...Amelia and Natasha I'm talking about you. - The drinks...tons of beer...good stiff hard alcohol drinks. - Food...I love the nachos...quesadilla, the burgers, the grubber sandwich, and the chili. - How can you NOT love a place that has corn hole in the summer.

One of the best burgers I've ever eaten....period. Close tie with Le Pigeon's but on a whole different level. First off its a half pound burger. Yes, half a pound! Ask for it medium rare for a culinary experience foodie nerds out there will talk about. Its nothing fancy or snobby, just good eats. Place is like Cheers in the sense that its a local spot for who else...locals. Keep it a secret if you bring out-of-towners...I wouldn't want to change a thing....

Walked into this place a little hesitantly and with very low expectations... It is, after all, off 39th and Gladstone. It's also got that trashy look from the outside, which continues on the inside - but just enough to make you feel at home, rather than repulsed. They have $3 beers all day Sunday, and then from 4-6 or something like that during the week. It's the opposite of the other happy hours around Portland where you get the food deal but not the beer deal. I prefer both, but I'm a woman - so I want it all. For a good beer deal though, and just a few minute walk from my apartment - I'm there. There are a couple tables outside, and they would be a great place to hang out when the weather gets a bit nicer. The menu seems fairly extensive, and I'd definitely be interested in checking it out if I hadn't been in a serious mood for a burger from Matchbox...

  • Chelsea A.

I'm not sure why it has taken me so long to write a review for Gladstone Pub - considering how often it seems like I'm there. Get the burger (they have a real grill outside where they cook them), and while I find the fact that they don't do fries frustrating the salads are actually really good. They do daily drink specials that are always fantastic - ie: whiskey & whatever for 3$ or a cocktail that will be cheaper. Servers have been awesome, but they're better if you sit at the bar, rather than a table. Especially because they're pretty engaging if you're right there. They have darts (which I suck at . . . for now) and tvs where they play sports; so you will be seeing me there when regular season football starts.

When I move to new towns/neighborhoods, etc. I always drive around and see what dive bars are around. Nothing within a mile, no thanks. When I was looking at my current place, I went to grab a coffee at the place next door. I immediately went inside, and here is my brief but concise assessment: 1. They were open at 10am 2. The place is dark enough to relax but not so dark that when you go back outside you feel like you are going to die. 3. Stiff drinks, plenty of beer selection 4. Nice staff 5. Dope buffalo chicken nachos I have been back many times and will continue to frequent this bar as my local bar of choice. Thanks Gladstone, my liver hurts.

I debated on giving the pub a 4 or 5 star but the burger was so good, I had to give it a 5. The flavor of the hamburger was one of the best I have had. I ordered the Texan which was BBQ sauce, cheese, grilled onions, lettuce and tomato. The only thing that would have made it perfect would be bacon and a side of fries but they do not serve either of these things at the pub. The balance of flavors was spot on, I think the bacon would have overwhelmed the flavor of the beef so I am glad they did not have it available to order. The potato salad had a little too much mayonnaise and not much flavor but I was stuffed after the hamburger so it did not matter.

Cheap, relaxed place for a burger and a beer. Plus happy hour ALL day on Sundays!! There's nothing especially exciting about this bar, but everyone there was really friendly and laid-back. I've only been there once, but I could tell it was a "regulars" kind of place. If it were closer to where I live I would make myself a regular there too. The food was surprisingly tasty for the price: especially when you order off the $5 menu. I got a delicious vege burger and plate full of chips for jut $5. Plus during happy hour you can get any beer on tap for another $3. Good prices, good food, great service. I will be back, especially in the summer time when I can hang out on the patio!

Saturday night, with a group of friends, we tried to go to the C Bar but after waiting 15 minutes for service that never came we went up the street to the Gladstone Pub and had the best time! The service was prompt, the drinks were great, and the food was delicious! So long C Bar, hello Gladstone Pub as our new local hang out!

Great all around menu for pub-grub and a fun local neighborhood bar in SE. They are still working on their rotating taps, but overall, PJ's hawaiian shirts and humor make up for it. Soups are delish!

I have a few friends that live in the area and when ever I'm over there i have to stop by for a grubber. other than how smokey this place can get it is great. The staff is awesome and puts up with me buying way too much to drink. i wish i had a place like the Gladstone in my neighborhood. this is the pub where everyone knows your name and you feel instantly at home. once they are smoke free in early 2009 this will be a great spot and it will be hard for me to stay away.

Well keeping in mind that I haven't yet come to the Gladstone Pub on trivia nights, let me paint a picture of this place for you... I came here to meet up with some friends and watch an unforgettably rousing Blazers game. The drinks were cheap, the food was good, the atmosphere was friendly, and all of us who were watching the game formed a sort of community... almost like... friends?! This was the game where the Blazers scored in the last .8 seconds to win. It was EPIC. Great bar! Still not as good as The Pub at the End of the Universe down the road if you ask me!

I have a very special place in my heart for The Stone. It's taken me a long time to write a review cause I honestly don't want too many people to know about it and go clogging it up, requiring them to expand it or turn it into anything other than exactly what it is! But that is extremely selfish of me, so I'm letting the secret out. This was the first bar that Josh and I stumbled upon when we moved to Portland. Perfect, because it was just a little bit like home (which is Ohio): a little grungy, a little eclectic, very comfortable and unassuming. Turns out that the brothers that own the place, PJ and Andy, are from Ohio...AHA!!!!:) Love them! All day happy hour on Sundays! $1 off pints and wells makes for super cheap drinks! Amelia is the best bartender in the whole world! She got to know us right away, offering suggestions for things for us newbies to do here in PDX. She can also run circles around what turns into a VERY busy bar, especially on warm summer Sundays! Also, HAVE to check out her Sunday Bloody Mary! Now for the biggest secret...I know you won't believe me until you try it, but The Stone has the BEST burger in all of Portland. Big, juicy, 1/2 lb patty grilled outside on an open flame, so none of that weird, watery flat-top funk that soggs up the bun ( I HATE that!). Put this beautiful piece of meat with all the traditional fixins on a Grand Central Bakery bun, and you don't even need fries (good thing, cause they don't have them!) I just get chips usually, but they also have rad homemade soups and chili available as sides! It seriously took me 6 full hours to digest it properly, now THAT's satisfying! So, any of you burger-freaks out there who obsess over the best ground-beef patty in PDX, check out The Stone and be amazed!:) And don't forget to leave some Stone love for me!:)

Went here with my friend last night for a few after work. We were grinning like a butcher's dog when we saw the special was the pork carnitas. With beers in hand we sat outside and waited for our meal. It arrived rather quickly, and looked delicious. The corn tortillas were crunchy around the edges but chewy in the centers. The pork had been marinated but was not too salty which is what I find at other places. All in all a decent meal for a few dollars... And they are Cornhole Central for Portland.

  • Lindsey K.

"Cornhooooooole!" That was me hollering (drunkenly) outside the Gladstone yesterday. Need I mention it was Happy Hour (4-7)? We're talking $2 domestic drafts and $3 fancier beers/wells. Couple that with a sunny day, a game of cornhole, and three friends throwing bean bags into a wooden board with a hole. A cornhole, if you will. I ended up spending a good five hours at the Gladstone, and enjoyed every minute. Monday is Trivia Night, and the place was pretty well packed. It starts at 8ish. Get there early. I believe Tuesday is Cornhole League Night. And you know what? Cornhole is harder than it looks. I had the King Kong nachos ($9) which were decent, but a little pricey methinks. Easily split with a friend though. The 1/2 pound cheeseburger ($8.25) looked like the way to go. The Gladstone is a quaint little spot perfect for an intimate gathering of friends. I might be back for all day Sunday happy hour and to perfect my cornhole. But I'll try to cut back on the PBRs. Oh, who am I kidding? Can I get a "Cornhooooole!"

One of my last burgers in Portland. Had just finished riding the blast zone at St. Helens. The texas burger was delicious. My friend's veggie burger was delicious. The outside patio is great. Service is friendly.

I discovered this place when, returning on a bike ride from Tabor, I came upon this small strip of commercial activity on Gladstone right off of 39th avenue. A sandwich board posted outside the bar depicting an animated hamburger caught my eye and I decided to go inside. I was greeted by a bartender well tattooed up and down the forearms, but plenty cordial. She asked if I wanted to see a menu and where I wanted to be seated. Yes. And outdoors prease. The sun was shining brightly so I choose a seat directly facing it, fully basking in its glory. When my burger arrived I took stock of the various mustard offerings and decided upon a virgin taste test before adulturating its flavor. Much to my surprise, it needed nothing additional. It was about as perfect a home-made burger could be. Since then I've come back to the Stone many times, usually during early Sunday afternoons where time seems to disappear and life comes to a halt. It doesn't hurt that happy hour is a full twelve-hours long on Sunday's, or that there's a stash of board games tucked away in the cabinets. My lady friend has accompanied me on many trips and has developed a particular affinity to the place as well, particularly after nights of copious boozing, where nothing but a greasy burger and a bloody mary can coax away that not-so-right feeling deep in your gut.

I was actually very impressed by the excellent service and kitschy atmosphere sported by the Stone, despite a slightly less appealing exterior. Very good price on the drinks, food great, especially their burgers, and the cozy, low-key feel goes well with the quality of their services.

Great Burgers and soups as well. The service is good and they have a decent selection of beer and liquor. Try and catch the owners who bartend ocaasionally, they are great guys! No childeren allowed otherwise I'd be in to eat more often.

The Pub is like an old 'hole in the wall' from back home in wisconsin. I love the fact that all the bartenders are beyond awesome - it totally has the feel of a neighborhood bar... 'Where everybody knows your name'. I love it!

They might have the best Clam Chowder on the planet. This is no joke. Their chowder is awesome. In fact, there soups are just awesome. I decided to write this post after having a bowl of their beer cheese soup on Sunday. The food is really good and they have a great beer selection. My favorites are: Super Turkey Melt, Rueben and the BBQ chicken quesadilla. I'm a creature of habit so I try to go on Fridays or Saturdays when they have the Clam Chowder. The waitresses are all super friendly and it's a great pub vibe in there. I hear their Bloody Mary's are killer but have yet to partake. I highly recommend you stop on by!

Realist neighborhood bar in town. Very refreshing & comfortable. Perfect example of a place in Portland that I'm hesitant to praise for fear of Cali's ruining it, though it seems impossible.

Amelia + Jalapeno Guac Burger = best combination EVER!! Love this place to death!!!

  • Jeff B.

A very solid neighborhood bar with better than average food. There is a decent amount of outdoor seating (2 tables in front, ~5 on side) and there was cornhole being played outside. The food prices averages around $8.50 which is a tad cheaper than the competition in Westmoreland. Buffalo Chicken Nacho - A little light on chicken but heavy on real cheddar cheese and blue cheese. Also, quite a generous portion. "Super" Turkey Melt - Okay, I am pretty sure we accidentally were served the standard turkey melt because there was no avocado or red peppers but it was still quite delicious.

We've had some fun at this place but it's definitely nothing special. If you're looking for a place to grab a quick drink with a friend, it's ok. The food is very lackluster and leaves me agreeing with some of the other reviewers, that I could probably make half of it at home. They're nachos seem like they're tricked out with a lot of ingredients, but it's really just melted cheese on seemingly store bought tortilla chips, and maybe meat. We've also been semi-sick after eating any of their burgers :/ Not sure what's going on there, but it's pretty consistent. If I were you, I'd steer clear of the burgers if you're there to eat. I've gotten a sandwich before that was pretty good, i think it's called The Grubber. (Mainly good because it didn't make us sick, not really worth what they charge). And again, one of the sides is potato chips.....not terrible but you spend a fair amount on a sandwich, you usually expect fries or something more involved. They also make a pretty good Bloody Mary, I'd recommend that if you do go there (one of the only redeeming qualities though). All in all, we've been there before, but if you have choices on where to go out that night, I'd skip this place. (Cbar's right down the street!) Side note: Scrolling through a couple of reviews, it's strange to see a business owner talking rudely to customers who were not satisfied.....really a turn off when someone is looking on here to possibly support your business.....

Great people! Fun to sit with friends and watch a sports game. Best chowder on Friday nights! Also order a blueberry stolli lemonade with strawberry purée. So bomb. Also pretty good service considering how they have few employees and tons of customers. They have trivia nights! They have shots!

New to the neighborhood and decided to check it out. The service was PHENOMENAL! Felt like part of the family, which is rare in a bar. A lot of bartenders in Portland can be pretentious, but of the 2 visits we had all 5 employees were extremely friendly. Especially, Tony! Just went tonight and you can tell he loves what he does. The music is also a huge plus, a little bit of everything awesome plays. Of the two visits we all ordered food and loved it! I would say the food is better than what you would expect from a bar.

I recently moved much closer to Gladstone St Pub. I had seen it from the sandwich place up the st. It had a nice look about it. I heard they had cornhole too. Tried it out last week. It's most definitely going to be on the rotation. There's not really one special thing that makes GSP great, it's just a lot of little things. Friendly service, plenty of outdoor seating, nice cozy indoor space, decent sports watching possibilities are some of it. Very relaxed crowd, no obvious idiots about. The hamburger I had didn't look like much, but it tasted delicious. The tap list was decent, gin and tonics were very solid. I wouldn't characterize GSP as a dive, because it's not dirty and grungy enough to be a dive. It's a great neighborhood pub that I'm glad I live near to.

One of those places where you don't want too many people to find out about it... For fear that it will get too busy. Stellar service and delicious food. The burger was the best I've had ever! The perfect neighborhood place! It's not fancy --- it's cozy and comfortable. I was pleasantly surprised today at how great it was. It was my first time in today. Kind of like a McMenamins only with much better food and service. We'll be back.

How could you not like a bar with a dog named Charlie that sits at the bar? Ok, Charlie is probably not there all the time, but he was on my first visit. We didn't even see him until we sat at the bar. I thought it was just a hairy kid out of my peripheral vision. Clearly I was wrong. There is more to the Gladstone Street Pub than Charlie. Believe it or not. It just seemed like a good bar with a laid back vibe. The food smelled really good, but Sue and I were just there for beers. Pretty good tap selection, nice staff and comfortable bar stools make it a place that I would hang out in more often if I lived in this part of town. Color me jealous as I don't have a place like this in my neck of Portland.

My fiancé and I just moved to the area and quickly found ourselves at home at the Gladstone Pub. The burgers are SUPER good, as is the chili. They make house infused vodka, my fiancé gets a cucumber vodka Bloody Mary, I like getting a jalapeño Vodka Soda with a splash of grapefruit. YUM. We love going there to watch sports, for trivia night, or just hang out whenever!

I recently moved just around the corned from this place and am excited to be able to have such a great "neighborhood bar." It's not to big or flashy, and it's the perfect place to stop by for a drink if you want to watch a game, hang out with a few friends, or grab a bite to eat (their food is much better than most bar food WITH some great vegetarian options).

One of the best dive-bar finds we've made yet!! Totally worth finding Gladstone Street Pub. Didn't think we were going to stay long though...the street parking has signs for 5 minute and 30 minute parking only. We were told by those inside that the parking signs are merely suggestions. The entire inside is the size of a large living room. We grabbed stools sort of at the end of the bar, kinda on a table...but where we could see a couple of the TVs. The Blazers were on soon. Their cocktail special was a "Moscow Mule". Tony behind the bar starting mixing before he even finished describing it...must have been the drool. Anyway, a pint glass with muddled lime, ice, vodka, and ginger ale. Wow, so simple and really refreshing! Wife and I ordered to sammich dinners to share....the special was a Cajun Bleu Burger, which we got with potato salad. We also ordered the Bluestramibata with clam chowder as the side. Good-freaking-jeepers....it was a terrific!!! Burger was spicy and bluey....good sized, but not a plate full. Prolly the only restaurant potato salad I've ever had where I wanted more. Honestly, it was as close to my mom made during the summers. The Bluestramibata is a ridiculous sammich with pastrami, bleu cheese on a super soft chibata bread. Hot and melty....really, really good! And the clam chowder was "scrape out every spoonful" good also. Just really impressed to receive four food items that wowed us here....... Well done, Gladstone Street Pub!! Well done.........

The first time I ate at The Stone I knew I wanted to be a regular. It's pub food, but better. They don't have a fryer, which concerns some people I know, it is easily my favorite neighborhood haunts.

It's a dive. Hard A drinks are a little on the spendy side for Portland bars, but the pours are never weak. Other than that, it's a land of pure boozy awesomeness, and their beer prices are reasonable and tap list pretty formidable for a place with 8 taps...so drink beer. The infusion selection is damn good, and I will pop for a bloody mary when biologically necessary and the garlic vodka does not disappoint...also they know how to make a michelada. This alone really should be a huge plus because that's hard to find in Portland. Food is excellent, don't miss the giant plates of nachos. I know you're all "bar food is all the same" but they have some neat twists on it, like buffalo chicken nachos. You heard me...buffalo chicken nachos. It's like your favorite bar appetizers got together and hooked up and this is what you get. Sandwiches are generous, and the chili is awesome, too. It's at the top of the menu for a reason. Just watch out if you get the chili nachos, they get kinda messy and are best eaten with someone you're not trying to impress...or a fork. Clientele is a big plus. It's the kind of place with zero pretense, where people can amicably work out what sport to watch, and everyone from hipsters to grizzled boozehounds can coexist. The dartboard crowd really thinks they can play darts, btw. It's kinda cute. Service is friendly and speedy. I enjoy the fact that the bartenders really know their stuff in a legit way, not an impressing morons who want ridiculous crafted cocktails way. It's a good low-key place to have a couple and do some writing, or have a few too many (but not so many the OLCC would notice) with your friends. It's a real neighborhood pub.

Burgers are the best I have had in a long time. Free bowl of peanuts you can just throw on the floor. Small but not cramped. Ended up staying for trivia night which was fun. Free prizes and we won a soap on a rope in the shape of a hand.

I love this place! They have amazing homemade soups, some of the best Bloody Mary's in town, and a pretty decent menu. I wish they had more light choices, but it's Pub food, and they do Pub food well. I have eaten here several times and have never been disappointed.

Moved to the Kenilworth area a little over six months ago and couldn't be happier with our neighborhood watering hole. The staff and patrons are great, the location is awesome, and while the bar may sound like a dirty hole in the wall (as many SE Pubs are), it's actually really charming inside. Definitely one of the best "low key" bars on the Eastside.

Good beer selection, good pub grub, good crowd and it's right down the street. What more could I ask for?

This place has proper pub grub. Everything comes with a homemade touch. DId not get to try the chili. Burger was great, service was nice. Vibe was okay, kind of a local spot. Grilled Ham Sandwich was tasty. Drinks are nice, brew selection is okay. Outdoor seating, daily specials, good spot.

The Gladstone Street is a perfect example of the kind of neighborhood bar that makes Portland such a great town to drink in! Solid bartenders and friendly folk made my latest experience here great. Perfect place to watch a game, relax and have some tasty traditional food. I had a fantastic grilled sandwich - turkey melt with guacamole, roasted red peppers, cheese and tomatoes. There are several other grilled sandwiches on the menu, several burgers, also quesadillas and veggie burgers and veggie meatloaf along with a few salads. The full menu has plenty to choose from and it all looked great. Ultimately, if I lived closer, I would be here A LOT. But still, whenever I do find myself in the neighborhood I am happy to realize that the Gladstone is nearby and a comfortable place to enjoy a beer awaits me. Also, during our sunny days, this is a great place to play cornhole!

This is a great neighborhood bar where not everyone knows your name, but they will still be welcoming and friendly even if they have never seen you before. I've had people refer to it as more of a "sports bar", which I get, but I also don't get. They do have the MLB package, which made my husband go "WooHoo!" but the place isn't decked out in sports regalia and I'm sorry, but any "sports bar" in this country where guys talk about soccer with as much fervor as football immediately steps above-and-beyond just a mere "sports bar'. The beer selection is limited but good, same with the booze. The bartenders are all great, engaging and professional but still relaxed and seem happy being where they are. The food menu is solid, consistent and perfect for hanging out and drinking. Overall, a great bar for an enjoyable, mellow afternoon or evening, I'd go anytime.

Just so others can see the delightful comment the owner left on this review, I'm updating this so it's front and center: "mmmmmmmm......sounds like someone was havin' a case of the Mondays. Thanks for coming in....you were a joy to serve. Come on down to our 4th annual Luau in mid-August - we could use that big stick up your ass for our limbo contest!" No "stick up my ass" (is that really the most colorful metaphor you could come up with? Let's try a little bit harder), your bar is simply not very good. You need to learn how to treat your customers, along with some basic English grammar. If you had a) good food, and b) a better beer selection, you might get away with acting like an aggrieved grade-schooler whenever anyone criticizes your establishment. It's amazing you're still in business. Cheers! ------------------------------------------------------------- This place is woefully overrated. If I were judging solely on beers and pub atmosphere, I'd probably give it a 3. But if you want to eat something decent, this is not the place, despite what other (clearly drunk, or tastebud-deprived) reviewers might state. The first time I came here, I was mildly disappointed but not overly so. They do have decent clam chowder, one of their entrée sides. However, they have no fries (always a bummer), and instead offer what appear to be Ruffles potato chips. Fucking Ruffles, and probably the generic brand. This is fail #1. In any event, I got a Reuben sandwich which was passable, and for $8 or whatever, it could have been worse. However, the fact that something could have been less enjoyable is not reason to give that establishment a 4-star review. The meat was really lackluster, the bread was a bit soggy, but the portion was large. Our female server was very attentive and nice, and did not make me feel like a bad person simply for being present (a plus when bar-dining in Portland). The second time, however, was pretty awful. The owner, or at least he acted like the owner, was our server, and he was unbelievably rude. When we first arrived, he immediately demanded our drink orders, which we weren't prepared for. I asked what was on tap--a normal question to ask a server in a bar--and he instructed me to look at the board behind me. Can I just say that I fucking hate when servers refuse to list beers on tap (we're not talking about the Horse Brass, here), and rudely tell you to read something that isn't even near you? That's customer service etiquette 101, and if you fail there, your tip is going down because you are a crotchety asshole. He then forgot silverware for my chowder and for my friend's potato salad, and quipped that it was our fault for not being green (what?): I then made an aside to the table that silverware is actually pretty eco-friendly, which he forced me to repeat. He then brought me a glass of water, apparently because he decided I was being too mouthy and must be drunk? I had had one beer at this point, for reference. I ordered a Jalapeno burger which was cooked to death and tasted honestly like cardboard. I sliced it in half and that shit was brain-matter-grey. They used pickled jalapenos, which were wet and mostly flavorless, a sad tomato and nowhere near enough cheese to mask the disgusting meat. Once again, my clam chowder was good. Apparently this is the only thing you can eat here. In conclusion, go here if you want to drink a beer, and hope you don't get the owner. If you want to pay for overpriced, really shitty dive-bar food, then go ahead and order a burger or meat sandwich. That is to say nothing of their "nachos" which my partner ordered on our first outing. You would be better off going to the store, buying some Juanitas and pre-shredded cheese, and microwaving that shit. Seriously.

Sometimes you are able to find solace in a quaint local spot. A place so cozy the bartender doubles as the host, chef and house-sitter, but this is NOT that place! Upon crossing the threshold I was immediately made to feel as if I made a wrong turn and was trespassing in a one horse town. While others walked in and were greeted by name (government or nick) I was ignored just long enough to prevent me from turning around. The bar housed a full collection of spirits and the bar stools may have even had the names of who left the most defining impression in the seat nailed to them. Reluctantly I order a simple turkey sandwich and as my food was served I mentally began kicking myself questioning why I hadn't listened to my gut and turned around. At one point it sounded as if a frat party had relocated to the outside patio. There were about six or seven guys screaming outside while playing corn hole; way too excited to be tossing sacks into a hole, in my humble opinion of course. Amid the screaming middle-agers, then poor service and nonexistent greeting the food just wasn't that great. Again I began having that internal conversation that lead with "why?" The quality of the sandwich was more than two notches below a hot pocket. They would have been better off serving me a lunchable. This was a mistake from the beginning and I wish I could have a do over. Instead, I removed the bookmark and hoped the sandwich I paid for didn't end up on the curb near my car. On 12/3/12 Pj B (the apparent owner) decided to cry a river in response to my review: Pj B.'s comment on your review: You apparently hate Grand Central Bakery bread sandwiches, cornhole, the sounds of people having fun, bars that make regulars feel comfortable, and bars that don't have a host greeting you when you come in. We love our great customers and welcome newcomers (although you might have to give us your name for us to know who you are). We're a neighborhood bar and you're a typical wanna-be food critic who feels self-important enough to do reviews of hardware stores, liquor stores, pawn shops, movie theatres and starbucks. We reserve the right to review customers here and you rate at a one-star. so below is a public copy of my direct reply: Wow....Unfortunately your retort is rooted in assumption while mine is based on a factual experience. Instead of getting your panties in a bunch man up and find resolve in the fact I don't feel as warm and cuddly about Gladstone as you do! Grand Central Bakery didn't make the sandwich I ordered, some scruffy guy that had his hands full with the seven people inside the did. If you enjoy cornhole, more power to you but no need to show your cornhole in the form of a snivel in response to my review. Neighbor hood bar or not I didn't enjoy it and chose to share it via Yelp! I have no problem coming back in and letting you know directly, either. Hardware store, ice creamery, airport or yoga studio, you don't need to know my name; you see my face and this is Portland...I'm not hiding behind a review, computer screen or other! I guess it's slow on Mondays and you prefer to scroll through reviews instead of sweeping. FOH!
