Took my partner to Fenrir for his birthday. Space is small and intimate, perfect for our evening. The pickled mackerel was his favorite. Great texture and flavor. The pickled mushroom was good as well. We ordered the scallops and marrow for our main course along with a negroni, mead and a seasonal cocktail to wash it down. Presentation and taste were optimal. Unfortunately they had sold out of the lamb neck and rabbit. But we thoroughly enjoyed all of the offerings we devoured during our visit.

Most of the fancy restaurants I've been to are typically French-inspired American/Californian food, so Fenrir was an amazing change of pace. The Scandinavian inspiration is apparent from the first glace of the menu - lots of pickled stuff and the proteins are distinctly "rustic". Lamb neck was really delicious, tender and perfectly seasoned. We also got the rabbit, which was different and well flavored but didn't have the wow factor of the lamb. During our 3 days in Portland, boyfriend and I were feeling like most of the restaurants we ate at were heavy on the salt, but not Fenrir! Great balance of flavors in every dish. Thanks guys for the great experience!

This place is a hidden gem, with the hidden part being literal - I passed right by the first time, since the unassuming entrance is overshadowed by Cellar Door's window signage. My husband and I had an unforgettable meal here tonight, starting with the wonderfully fresh half shell oysters, then the acidic trout and savory shallot entrees, and ending with the best dessert we've ever tasted: house-made corn ice-cream with blackberries on top. It doesn't sound particularly appealing, especially with my strong favoritism for anything chocolate, and seemed risky given that it was the ONLY dessert offering, but the ice-cream captured the sweetness and essence of corn, left a rich buttery aftertaste and transformed into a tarty delight with a bite with blueberry. Definitely the most creative dessert I've ever encountered and yet not one I would've ever ordered given multiple options, so it was smart of them to only have one dessert choice. Service was attentive and quick, although there was only one other party there. This place should be packed, but I imagine the pricing might be confusing, because Fenrir is actually high-end food priced affordably. Thus the portions are small, the flavors are bold, the drinks are strong, everything's made in-house (including their soda), but the bill doesn't quite match the caliber of the meal you've just been treated to.

I really really wanted to give this place 5 stars but held back for 1 reason only. Let's start with all the positives of this great restaurant based on the upstairs of an apartment with lovely ambience... FOOD was delicious, flavorful, thoughtful, even whimsical. This is my second trip to Fenrir and today, between my friend and I, we shared the turnips app, spring salad, scallops, and lamb neck. Everything was wonderful but the salad was a standout. I was scraping every last bit off the plate. The scallops were perfectly cooked with a nice carrot puree on the side, and the lamb neck was soooo incredibly tender, you'd wonder why you would order any other cut of the lamb. The food combinations were just bursts of flavors in your mouth. Now, the only reason why I didn't give Fenrir 5 stars... after ordering an app, salad, and 2 entrees, I WAS STILL HUNGRY! The food is beautifully plated, well seasoned, but tiny portions! Maybe I'm still in that phase where if I spend about $20 on an entree, I'd like to have leftovers to take home, in which case, Fenrir is not the right place, but I don't like to leave a restaurant hungry after spending over $30. When I'm rolling in the dough, I will order everything off the menu and leave happy and satisfied, but until then 4 stars for Fenrir until they increase their portions.

I recently went to Fenrir for a date. I have actually driven right by this place several times but glad I decided to give it a chance. My date and I shard the turnip app and lamb neck. Both were prepared to perfection and the lamb was so tender. We could have eaten more because the portions are small but I was enjoying my company too much.
(5)Kelly B.
Wonderful atmosphere for an intimate evening. Delicious bread and excellent drink selection. I took a chance with the pickled mushrooms and I was not disappointed. We will definitely be back for another date night.

Went here with high expectations. And came back stuffed and satisfied. They've lots of Icelandic drinks on their menu. Some of them quite strong. Some of them fennel flavored. Almost all of them very good and must try. The herring was rich, fatty and delicious, which goes perfectly with their homemade bread. The soup of the day was cooling and a good complement to our meat heavy fare. I tried the bone marrow. It's a bit of effort to dig out all the goodies. But they're oh-so-worth it! I think next time I'll try the rabbit. Not nearly as gamy as I expected and deliciously prepared. The staff were very courteous and helpful. And the ambience of a slightly old apartment gives it a nice, homely feel.

Second time lucky here! The first time we went they had run out of food (i'm not kidding, not a menu item but all of it), my curiosity was therefore doubled and I diligently returned the next week and a little earlier in hopes that they still would have some food left, and they did :P It was about a 30 min wait on a Friday night, but the place is set right in somebody's dining room so number of tables are limited hence the wait. Plus they have reservations so my fault for not noticing that! We started off with the soup of the day which was served cold but delicious, and it went excellently with our strong scandinavian cocktails. Between the table I think we tried all the entrees, the rabbit, lamb neck and the marrow. All were excellently prepared and had distinct flavor profiles. The quality of the meat and other ingredients were top notch. Our server was great and knowledgeable and was able to explain all the menu items very well.

Hidden. Like a wolves in their lair, these crafty carnivores craft culinary creations that are both aggressive and assertive. They dare to utilize cuts of meat that are not all that ordinary. My Potatis Korv WAS a potato sausage with pork skin and lamb belly. My wife had bone marrow served on the bone. Each entree had a treat of cabbage. We decided not to get wine (mostly by the bottle) and settled on cocktails. The host is a good mixologist. Dimly lit for long and casual interludes, the pace is comfortably slow. The bar is begging for company as it lays in wait. Too bad. The tab for that night, including oysters(two), was less than $50!! Awesome !! I want to come back and try the braised sheep neck. I know I won't be disappointed . Again with the bike parking????
(5)Jeremy F.
Awesome. Try the pork rinds. They are the best pork rinds I have ever had, by far. I also especially liked the cocktails.
(5)Jeremy V.
This review is long overdue, but I'm glad I waited. I've went here multiple times since opening and it just keeps getting better. My last meal here... Mindblowing doesn't cover it. Starting with the drinks, I finally had the Norse Quarter and it is by far one of the best "non-standard" drinks I've ever had. If more joints start carrying aquavit, they should pay attention. The food, while always exceeding expectations, hit a high note with the scallops and the (it seriously needs a better name) carrot cream. When I love spelt and 'carrot cream' as much as this and I'm not gushing just about the meat? That's something. (Seriously though, the meat).
(5)Karen S.
I've lived in Portland for almost a decade and I can easily say this is one of the top five places I've ever eaten. From the drink pairings to dessert course everything about eating here was a supreme pleasure. The atmosphere is cozy and the menu is tantalizing. I was charmed by the staff and impressed by the cooking. I can't give this place enough stars.

This restaurant is AMAZING. It is thoughtful, intentional, delicious and so very interesting. I went with my husband and two friends on a Thursday night. We made a reservation (which they gloriously accept). They have a lovely, interesting cocktail menu as well as a really good few taps and wine list to choose from. All good choices, clearly well thought out. The food. For starters, we had pork rinds, pickled eggs, oysters, pickled mushrooms and a cup of the soup, which was roasted mushroom. Everything was pitch perfect- but the soup was the standout. It was pureed and I don't know exactly what was in it (I don't think cream, so it must have been wizardry), but it was truly memorable. For entrees, we shared the rabbit, trout, lamb neck and the marrow. Each thing was independently wonderful, so it is hard to pick a favorite, but the trout was easily the best trout I've ever had. It was perfectly cooked and seasoned, and somehow also perfectly deboned. The lamb neck was also a standout- braised and then fried to melty, tender, crispy perfection. The rabbit also was delightful- crepinette is a bit like sausage, but with rabbit it was so so delicious. The marrow was perfect- several of our party had not had marrow previously, so it was nice to offer them the superlative version for their first try. For dessert, we shared the only option- cilantro cake with lemon curd and yogurt ice cream. It sounds weird, and it was weird, if weird means "a thing you have never thought of or considered for a dessert, of ingredients you would never ever put together, but which was in fact so tasty and interesting that you felt like giving the person who thought of it a high five for sheer creativity". Fenrir is SO GOOD. I can't wait to have dinner here as often as humanly possible forever.
(5)Peter F.
Amazing, personal, fresh. Hope new location doesn't take away from the experience they have created.
(5)Jon Y.
Went here with my wife and brought a friend along with us, what a great night! The owner (Tyler) was working the bar and we asked him to feed us and make us some great drinks and he definitely did not disappoint! Very unique and delicious cocktails! The food he chose for us was all interesting and delicious. Great ambiance, top notch service, and clearly these folks but a lot of thought into everything they do. They keep the ingredients super fresh and seem to be very innovative in making as much as they can in-house. I highly recommend this intimate Portland treasure! See all the !!!!
(5)Cat S.
This team of plucky well-travelled, Norwegian-influenced fellows from the Central Valley hits all the right notes of flavor, presentation, comfort and surprise. I wish I could eat here every night. What they do with scallops is heavenly delicious. The watercress soup was sublime. Pickled anything! A chartreuse over a large ice is a refreshing way to cool down . . . I eagerly await their re opening at their new (yet to be disclosed) location.
(5)Mark B.
Romantical little spot in inner SE Portland. Casual atmosphere, with a stellar, upscale & revolving menu. Friendly, knowledgeable, & unpretentious staff; low on the attitude scale. Cap this off with craft cocktails, a proper wine list, and season beer selection, you an establishment deserving of all 5 stars.
(5)Katie M.
Attentive staff, original cocktails, and delicious food. I ordered the trout and my boyfriend ordered the rabbit. Both were outrageously good. I can't wait until I get to go back and try the lamb neck and cheese plate, as well as some other cocktails. This is a great place to go on a date, an intimate setting and very personable atmosphere. It's a hidden gem. Highly recommended!
(5)Shani J.
Absolutely perfect- a minimal, cosy and inviting spot with real character. The food is subtly flavorful, no more complex than it has to be. The pickled mushrooms were scrumptious, the bread was divine, the trout mouth-watering, and there's a solid selection of aquavit- every part of the meal felt just right. The waiters and bartender made us feel at home. Highly recommended, a new favorite spot in Portland.

I stumbled in here for dinner on a weekend visit to Portland. The atmosphere is super cute, and the service was fantastic. I often find myself feeling awkward when I go out to dinner alone, but for some reason, this feels like the perfect place to do that. It also felt like a great place to take a date. I got the marrow, because I've been interested in trying marrow for a while. It was fantastic. I have no frame of reference, because I've never had marrow before - but I have a gut feeling they did it really well. The radicchio that came with it was also delightful. Their cocktail list also looked yummy, next time I go I'll be sure to try one.

Everything is beautifully done at Fenrir. It is truly a hidden gem in Portland, situated in a charming Victorian house atop Cellar Door Coffee Roasters. The menu is seasonal and thoughtfully curated. I enjoyed fried brussels sprouts, a roasted squash soup, a buckwheat cake with oyster mushrooms and smoky pepper puree, and a sweet black truffle cocktail. The chefs at Fenrir excel in adventurous, yet incredibly balanced, flavors. For me, each dish resonated like comfort food, yet they also shone with bold, creative streaks. I highly recommend Fenrir for its inventive compositions, and I cannot say enough about its wonderful staff. All were friendly, warm, and knowledgable. Meat and fish stand out on their menu, but I'm vegan; they were most accommodating in making something special that fit my preferences. Co-owners Ian, Tyler, and John James--thank you!
(5)Michael H.
Everything about this spot was perfect. Super cool building, the dining space reminds me of someone's living room, in the best way possible. The food is stupid good. Close your eyes and point to something, you'll be more than satisfied. Cocktails are top notch as well.
(5)Dirk L.
This was some of the most unique and delicious food I have ever had. Wine selection was fantastic, the server was accommodating and knowledgeable. We had a lovely evening.
(5)Leslie M.
The drinks, oh the drinks. The food, oh the food. All the grub and cocktails were amazing, so amazing I thought I saw unicorns sneeze glitter. The timing, quality and presentation is phenomenal while the small space is incredibly comfortable, romantic and relaxing, it's the place I'll be going to when a dive bar is far from the mind after a long day at work.
(5)Cris W.
Amazing. We ate in a room decorated with drawings of wolves. The service was attentive and knowledgeable. The food was local, creative and prepared with care. My husband had a beet Bloody Mary and I had rose soda which was tart, fragrant and delightful. We shared the cheese board with delicious whole-grain bread, fresh honeycomb and rhubarb, a smooth and creamy beet soup, and fresh clams with great broth and more of that bread. The pasta was my favorite dish- a wide rye tagliatelle with fresh greens and tangy buttermilk. It was fantastic. My husband enjoyed the oysters and raw lamb. The portions were generous and the prices incredibly fair for the quality of the food. Everything was simple but incredibly flavorful and obviously made with pride and care. Dessert service is coming soon! That's about all this place needs to be perfect.
(5)Luna P.
The soup and the Brussels sprout are great, all in all good food. Drinks and wines are great too, they have a wine cellar in a closet with lock. long wine list, that I like. It was one of my birthday dinner, they gave me any Calbury chocolate egg for dessert with a candle. the setting is cute, but only one bathroom, but you can lay in the bath tub with all the cushions in it.
(4)midwest t.
Took a chance on this tonight starters were timely. When they finally showed up Entrees were outstanding but...THERE WAS NO ONE ELSE THERE! Yes I realize this is shouting but heck at 7pm on a Thursday night don't they have some f and f who could liven things up and Obtw make sure the kitchen can get the flow going? Nice concept food but not a smart kitchen and felt like I was in a quaint Ohio tavern

Do yourself a favor and get thee to Fenrir. It's a bit out of the way so you wonder if you're in the right place or lost, but do not fret because the soothing sounds of jazz will reach your ears as you walk up the steps to the small but lovely establishment. It's so cool to see a place like this in business, and the food is spectacular. I want to marry the brussels sprouts and have three kids with it. We also got the rabbit crepinette and the sablefish. They pair flavors together I wouldn't ever have thought of and it's all so fresh and rich. I'm so glad I took the time to experience Fenrir!
(5)Corey C.
These guys are incredibly passionate about what they do. Every ingredient is chosen with purpose and enthusiasm; and every dish is assembled with care and creativity. The service is phenomenal and the atmosphere is on point. They are pushing the envelope with food and drink and I believe they are onto something. Give them some freedom and they will give you quite the experience. One of my favorite places in Portland.
(5)Andrea M.
Everything was absolutely delightful. Without fail, from the pre-dinner cocktails, to wine pairings all the way through the courses. Love, love, love... One of the best meals we've had. Thank you.
(5)Tessie M.
Definitely off the beaten path! If you're in the area and want a drink, try this place. You will not be disappointed. Casual atmosphere. Seating upstairs and just feels like you're in someone's home dining room. I thoroughly enjoyed the Brussels sprouts, bone marrow, vegetable salad, and the fried sablefish. They ran out of the duck and flaeskesvaer so will try it on my next visit. Drinks cocktails were quite interesting and sounded delicious since most of them are custom and homemade. Will try it next time. Really good quality food! Will definitely be back.
(5)Todd G.
Top notch from start to finish. Service- outstanding and knowledgeable, cocktails- homemade and delicious (I rarely even order them, usually get beer), entrees were completely as described and delicious. Real down home feel and cool, chill ambiance. One of few five stars I've given on yelp. Highly deserve them.
(5)Vegetativnaya S.
I made a reservation via yelp to celebrate a birthday. Received a conformation in email right away. We ubered there to find the place empty and closed. I how that happened but they ruined the whole say and someone's bday. Shame.
(1)Paris F.
I love the ambiance, the friendly staff, the drink and the food. It is a secret jem where the place takes you back to old sweet memories. I had the special salmon tartar which wasn't really a tartar, more like chopped up salmon in square pieces but it was delicious and beautiful decor anyways. Cheese plate. Bone marrow which was not my favorite but it's the personal choice or taste. This is the only place I would like to come back in portland!!!
(4)Mandarin Y.
I finally found a restaurant that serves Scandinavian style cuisine in Portland. Everything we tasted was seasoned to perfection. Although the ingredients used were simple they were able to pair and highlight each ingredient's flavor to make each dish well balanced and delicious. I love how all of their ingredients are from the Northwest and their seafood is oh so fresh and succulent. If you like pickled food then this place is for you, because these guys have it down to a science. The service was excellent. The servers were polite, informed, and attentive to our dining needs. The atmosphere was cozy, warm, and inviting. It felt like an old world European dining room. All in all our dining experience exceeded all expectations and we would gladly return.
(5)Sarah C.
Fenrir is an excellent place to go for delicious drinks and sharing small plates! These guys are fun and knowledgeable, making the experience of hanging out there consistently pleasant. It was also a great place to spend Valentine's, eating adorable and scrumptious courses in an intimate setting.
(5)Kadielle B.
Discovered Fenrir recently. Elegant yet cozy. Loved the setting and the food! Service was perfect! Will go back :)
(5)Dayton R.
This is a MUST GO place. Its an undiscovered gem tucked away on the second story of an old house above a coffee shop. My wife and I really enjoyed the relaxed atmosphere, great service, and FANTASTIC food at very reasonable prices. Its a meat centric menu, but they do have salads, vegetables, and soup that are all outstanding as well. I opted for the lamb neck, only upon recommendation. Now lamb neck does not normally jump out at me, but WOW was I surprised. They cook these lamb necks for 8 or 9 hours in butter until the lamb just falls off the bone. Then they serve you a generous boneless portion that will leave you satisfied. This place is just starting to get some regulars after being open a year so stop by, miss the crowds, and just enjoy an overall great experience. 5 stars.
(5)eric k.
Everything was excellent. The staff/service was the right blend of friendly/professional. Tyler - one of the co-owners - explained everything with enthusiasm - and deep knowledge. Everyone there was brimming with that same enthusiasm. Our food was perfectly prepared. The trout practically melted in our mouths. Each dish was prepared with a respect for the natural flavors. The chef brought out these flavors with a subtle hand - not overshadowing with spice or sauce. Delectable to the tongue and lovely to the eye.
(5)Megan P.
I am nearly speechless about the food I consumed here. I had the ham hock - served with a boiled potato, wedge of cabbage, and horse radish. It was phenomenal. Not only was everything cooked to perfection - but I could taste the love that went into making the dish. It was succulent and seasoned perfectly. All the dishes I saw leave the kitchen also looked amazing. The staff are all great people. Attentive, pleasant, and knowledgable. I cannot wait until the next time I eat here. I suggest you do the same.
(5)Julia G.
Wonderful meal here. First started with excellent handcrafted cocktails--the Norse Quarter is so tasty, the Negroni had a twist on standard ingredients. We had the dozen oysters, and they were uber fresh. Next, marrow with radicchio slaw--perfect. Our entrees were perfect...sablefish especially delicious. Each dish had wonderful touches. The cabbage rolls had housemade horseradish and a thick brushstroke of tomato sauce. It's an intimate restaurant with lovingly prepared food. Really nice wine list too.
(5)Amanda c.
Hidden gem, though I'm afraid the secret will be out soon! Upstairs from cellar door coffee (which you should also check out, it's awesome), I've been here twice, and each time I'm blown away by the unique and delicious dishes on the menu. Every aspect of each dish is carefully considered and crafted for a really special dish. I don't know how to categorize the food - European/American, not African or Asian, but beyond that I can't say, and I doubt you could either, gentle reader. Last night we had the rye pasta with kale- subtle and tangy and satisfying, and the lamb collar - OMG where has this cut of meat been all my life? Incredibly rich and tasty. I'm not gonna lie, I kinda didn't want to review this place because I love how easy it is to get in, but they are doing something really special-not just another sushi, southern, or Italian place- and I don't want to see it go unrecognized.
(5)Ricardo M.
This restaurant is very original. We started with oysters, which were delicious. Instead of lemon or a vinaigrette, they sprinkle each oyster with dill granita, which goes very well with them. We had a garden greens salad with rhubarb dressing and labneh -- yum, delicious. We also had bone marrow (never had that before), scallops, and rabbit crepinnette. We finished with homemade elderflower ice cream. The place is also very cozy. The overall experience was excellent.
(5)Benjamin L.
WOW. Goat shank with buckwheat and pumpkin seed salad was amazing. The Stone fence cocktail was delicious as well. Went with three others- everyone ordered something different, and everyone was blown away by the quality of the food and drink. These people know how to craft deeply satisfying and memorable dishes and drinks, and their passion is apparent in all aspects of their handiwork. Highly recommended.
(5)d s.
A simply astounding meal. One of the best I've had in Portland.
(5)Cape M.
They know food here and I'm a fan. The bread and house butter is worth the carb loading. The vegetable salad with egg yolk very tasty. Clams and broth wonderful. Pea soup outstanding. Cheese plate darn good. Friendly, mellow, attentive vibe. 4.5 stars. Will be back.
(4)Kathryn M.
This restaurant is as good as it gets - charming atmosphere, great service and exceptionally good food. A lot of places talk about "locally grown" these days, but these guy are really doing it. Ask about a dish on the menu and you're sure to get story about each carefully selected ingredient - a difference you can assuredly taste - but all without the usual associated pretense. The menu is small and elevated with the sort of preparation and care you'd typically find at a much more expensive restaurant. I look forward to going back often!
(5)Robin K.
Hidden treasure! Amazing menu with delightful and unique combinations. Lovely staff! Great cocktail menu!!!
(5)Jacob H.
Real simple small place, but excellent food. The price is more than fair for the quality. If you're main concern is taste you won't be disappointed.
(5)Amber C.
I was first invited to a cocktail hour here by a friend right as this place opened. The place itself is almost unnoticeable. Fenrir is right upstairs from Cellar Door coffee, and is only noticeable from the street from a small, handwritten-looking sign on the door. Fenrir was almost empty when I arrived and not very full when I left. I was there from around 6-8pm and had plenty of time to sample the appetizers and craft cocktails available. The service was excellent, and the decor warm and inviting. I felt like I was eating and drinking in someone's living room. I went back a couple of months later to try dinner there, and was really pleased by the quality and preparation of the food. I enjoyed the eggs most of all! Highlights: Cheese Plate Vegetable Salad with spring vegetables, herbs, warm yolk, buttermilk, bread crumbs Pickled farm eggs I also had a dish of noodles made with squid ink. I don't see this on the current menu so this may no longer be available. Fenrir seems like a cozy secret and an establishment that's not usually full. I'd suggest it for dates as well as casual dinner!
(5)Fred B.
My husband and I stumbled upon this treasure. Intimate dining, engaging staff and deliciously resourceful cuisine. After a delightful craft cocktail made with Aquavit (my husband had the old fashioned and I had the Negroni), we ordered the cheese board and the pickled mushrooms, followed by endive and rabbit. All amazing! When we are back in Portland, we will absolutely return to Fenrir.
(5)Jason D.
When people are kicking down the door to get into Fenrir, at least I can say I was there before the madness. I would eat here every night if I could. The owner is so nice, food is so amazing, and atmosphere is as cool as the other side of the pillow (thank you Stuart Scott). Get the oysters, mmmm the oysters.., salad, soup, bread and butter, yes pay for it, it's worth it, rye pasta, lamb neck. You can order anything there and you'll be happy. Viva Fenrir!!
(5)Brye P.
This place is amazing. The fact that it was almost empty inside when we went is absurd. The lamb tartare is AWESOME. Pretty affordable too, as we ordered almost everything on the menu and two drinks each.
(5)Joshua F.
far and away one of my PDX favorites. the excitement for food and refreshment expressed through Ian, John James and Tyler is criterion. Fenrir, my dear reader, is real - farm focused and comprehensive, a re-invention of delicious from the level of chemistry right out to the candle warmed atmosphere. kudos.
(5)Karl V.
First a disclaimer: our neighbor is one of the owners. But I'm a truthful person, so I wouldn't give Fenrir a high rating if I didn't think it deserved it. This is a Scandinavian themed restaurant, and no, they don't have lutefisk on the menu. It's located in an upstairs space, so it's not going to work for people who have accessibility issues. The decor is reminiscent of a place I used to stay when I traveled to Oslo. Very homey and simple, with an eclectic assortment of tables and chairs. It was clean and orderly. When we arrived, there were a few people at the bar, but no other dinner customers, so we seated ourselves. The staff was quick with menus and drinks. My wife opted for the fresh pea soup and we split an order of marrow. The soup was tasty and nicely presented. Marrow, which I hadn't tried before, turns out not to be my cup of tea. Not that it tasted bad, but it's a consistency issue for me. My spouse ate it up. It's served in-bone, which makes it somewhat awkward to get out, as the bones are very hot to handle; it comes with bread and some greens that included celery root and parsley. We both ordered the trout, which was excellent. Crispy skin, served with cucumber, cranberry and fennel. Nicely cooked, and boned in the kitchen, which is a nice touch. We'll be back. Good luck to you, Ian!
