I have been drinking at The Commodore for years now. I find myself enamored of the staff and ownership. Each bartender has a unique and nuanced personality and they each provide excellent service in their own way. Even with a recent price increase, it's still laughably inexpensive. To get a free-poured drink for under 5 dollars, two blocks away from a professional sports stadium, is a deal of mythical proportions. The food is simply phenomenal. I hear people raving about the fried chicken all the time, but I've honestly never had it. Every time I order food I can't resist The Burnt Burger. I've ordered it time and time again and it is EXACTLY the burger I want and need in my life. Every single time. Time to come clean: This is my first and only Yelp review and it is written to counteract a recent review that I took great exception to. A recent reviewer stated that the service had taken a nose dive and had gripes about nickles and dimes. I respectfully and emphatically disagree. The staff is astounding if you pay attention. I have seen the bartenders there, single handed, deal with an insane pre-game Timbers crowd at maximum capacity, and no one waits more than a couple of minutes to get a drink in their hand--all while being hyper vigilant with regards to security and efficient customer service. They do it and they never lose their cool. Bartenders that can handle the stress of that crush the way they do is a level of professionalism that I think can only be described as elite. On a slower day that same bartender will make you laugh so hard you will think you might die of it. When you step into The Commodore you are stepping into a real bar. Staffed with real people that are some of the best at what they do. You will not find corporate smiles plastered under dead eyes. It is a neighborhood institution staffed by neighborhood people that very obviously care about how their business is run. I am more than willing to pay a nominal surcharge here and there to help keep places such as this alive and well in a struggling neighborhood.. But I don't worry about nickles and dimes when I go out drinking, and I would contend that if you do, maybe you should do your drinking at home. It's much more cost effective. It would also save the rest of us form your persnickety, pedantic bellyaching.

Cool place! AWESOME mac & cheese (and I consider myself to be a bit of a mac & cheese expert).

Since the Matador closed :tears: we make this our go-to spot when we're staying Downtown. We are usually here late night, so I couldn't tell you about the food, but the drinks are spot on. The place also has pinball games, pool tables, and a jukebox. Nice place to end your late night of drinking.

Marathon turned us away so we came here and turned out to be amazing...went to marathon's a day ago and it sucks anyway

Warm and inviting atmosphere. Delightful staff, Chuck was a polite and great bartender. Delicious cocktails. Pool tables? Lottery machines? They've got 'em. Pinball? No problem. Plenty of seating, two bars. Why would you go anywhere else?!

The Comadorre salad is awesome, full of great fresh greens. The burnt burger is truly amazing and I only eat beef once or twice a month. So don't miss it.

Been going to the Commodore for many, many years. Unfortch, the Mexican family who ran the kitchen in years past has departed, and the food is miserable now. Except for the fries. The fries are pretty good bar food. But the spinach-artichoke dip is from a powdered mix or something and the beef stroganoff looks like a tired canned beef stew. The chicken skewers are unrecognizable. Are those lips and a**holes? Or something else? The salsa served with the chips is Pace. Pace Picante sauce. Anyway, it matters not, because the drinks are strong, the video crack machine pays out, the jukebox is stellar, and it's a great place to hang with drinks before or after a game at PGE Park, while the hipsters are all at the Kingston or Marathon Tavern. Just stay away from the food (((shudder)))

Came over to play pool and was thrilled. The atmosphere and the players were equally high quality!

If you're in the area, this is a really fun, affordable dive bar with great drinks. They also have really good food. My favorite is the homemade fried chicken, but I've also been told that the macaroni and cheese is to-die-for. Update: the nachos and hamburgers are really good. And I've heard from a vegetarian that the salad, the hamburgers, and the nachos are good too. You can just go online. I don't know when they have their menu up. I don't really necessarily go into a bar with the intention of eating anyways. Who would go into a bar for drinks? Food is secondary. Well actually it's third. I go there for the drinks, the people, and then the food.

Pay attention folks! There have been some changes to the menu. Some awesome changes and the kitchen doesn't disappoint! I am particularly enamored with the fried chicken and the mac 'n cheese. I am also pleased as punch that the barkeep serves up very strong drinks for a pittance. Inside, Commodore totally fits the definition of a dive bar. It's kinda dark, kinda has some shady looking folks slumped in the seats at the bar getting day drunk (not that day drinking is a bad thing...) I am not one to call that kettle black. For your entertainment, there is a jukebox available, pool tables, and video gambling machine. I wish they would update their website and post the menu online. Lack of online menu aside, Commodore is pretty cool. 2014 - Review # 21

5 star dive bar. No harm in coming here. Heavy pours and a jukebox. The place has been here for awhile, and I've been 2 or 3 times at this point. Last night I got food for the first time, and although the menu made it sound really good (homemade tots, house seasoning, stuff like that) it ended up tasting like standard bar fare. The fries were thick cut and fairly starchy, although halfway through a friend spilled an entire glass of vodka on them which might have influenced the flavor. The tots tasted like any other tots, definitely seemed frozen and not homemade, unless the homemade tots were then frozen and used for my dish. Anyway.. We had a few drinks, and I watched the bartender literally fill my glass with vodka and then splash Tonic on top. It was tough to slug down but I appreciated the sentiment, I definitely was giving off a "get me hurting drunk" vibe. Good place overall, and my go to dive on west burnside now that matador (rip) closed.

This place is a warm, happy, friendly, relaxed locale with great drinks and lovely, open-minded bartenders who serve you well. I always feel welcomed here. The drinks are priced right and you can't beat the location. It's a good place to chill, talk your friends, and the food, well, it's the bomb! The cook, Tim, will come and deliver your food and I have had had one of the best salads of my life there: fresh arugula with a gorgeous dressing! Swoon.

All persons that work here are awesome. Clean space. Good Pours. Friendly folks. It's clear the owner takes care of his employees and cares about his clientele.

This place has just really taken a nose dive. The service is rude, pours and pricing inconsistent and they nickel and dime you on everything from using a card to ordering a drink tall. After about fifteen years of drinking here, I think I'm done. Thanks for the memories...

The bearded bartender was already drunk when we arrived. The jukebox was yielding loudly popular yet someone discreet tunes at maximum volume. All I knew was we were boarding an Amtrak train tomorrow for Seattle and my head was hurting a little. The bartender was affluent in the language of libations and loved to pour drinks and tell me where to go for brunch menana. They had a variety of bottles, a couple of pool tables, a quirky maze of hallways that led to bath & billiards rooms and maybe even an exit. The jukebox was not anything to freak out and call your friends back east for at 1am eastern time (as I found out) but they stay open late and love to have folks to serve to.

The Commodore rocks! I was on a mission to celebrate my friend's birthday in style..and to our dismay we were unable to get in at the local hot spots. Our taxi driver suggested we give The Commodore a try...and we had the best time. The bartender Brian was so sweet...he put a bunch of songs in on the jukebox for us to select our music for the night . The b-day girl was on a first name basis with Brian by the end of the night and he was quick to serve up more drinks ASAP for us. The birthday girl danced the night away to some tunes and had quite a night! I recommend this place if your crew is the life of the party and looking for a small place where they can be seated and served with some stiffys!

Stiff drinks, cheap prices, great vibe. Not super divey, but anything but upscale. Their prior location was a fond place for my friends and I, but the newer, larger location is nice gor groups! This is a great bar to relax, and just hang out. They now serve food (aside from just the chips at the previous location) but I've yet to try it!

I used to frequent the bar in its old location and loved it dearly. I only recently found out they had moved, so I had to check it out. Way bigger space and now there serve food at night. Great chicken and still Really strong drinks for not much. Good to know things haven't changed. The older mean lady is gone, but the new younger lady is a chip off the old block. Made me wait a really long time to even acknowledge me, as she was talking gossip. When she did get to me, she made me a great drink though. So it's all a wash. Stronger drinks than anywhere other than sewicklys, in fact I wouldn't be surprised if she used to work there. Plus, she got into it with someone over video poker and held up a bat, all while wearing skin tight workout wear! Totes entertaining!

My fiancé and I wandered into The Commodore on a recent trip to Portland. The day bartender was delightful! I was suffering from indecisiveness and she suggested a muddled cocktail with fresh fruit--it was very tasty! She recommended some delicious local beers for my partner, and even wrote down the names/addresses of rental bicycle shops and other local attractions. Above and beyond! We came back the next night and met the night bartender, who was very friendly and entertaining! The next time we come back to Portland we will definitely be swinging by! Great people, great vibe!

LOVE this bar! Great food, stiff cocktails and good beer selection. Good little neighborhood bar. The staff, with the exception of the big bartender (sorry don't remember his name)are AMAZING! Friendly and fun. Will keep stopping in. The Mac n Cheese is delicious, good burgers and nachos as well.

Went in Sunday morning for brunch with some friends. Nice, clean little joint. They keep remodeling and it shows (friends told me they had changed it up). I had the biscuits and gravy with "chicken fried chicken" and my wife had the french toast. Very good. I was very impressed! I didn't eat for the rest of the day and priced very reasonably! We don't get into downtown too often, but we have already planned our next two trips here! I am even thinking about getting in on their pinball tournaments! They just added 5 machines! Watch out Tommy, I am coming for you!

Stopped in with some friends for a night cap and a game of pool. The Commodore is definitely a low-key place with nice beers on tap, priced just right. The bartender was comically surly, riffing with my friend that he couldn't get the drink he wanted before eventually giving it to him, and then trying the same with me like I didn't just watch this performance 3 minutes earlier. Nice, I like a bartender who tries to mess with the clientele. Anyway, not much more to say other than this is a solid establishment.

Things have started to change at the old tired Commodore Grill. Fresh blood has arrived in the form of one tattooed, knows her stuff, dipped in awesome Charity. Charity is the chef on the weekends and on some weekdays too. She really has her shit in one sock. Abraham is the kindly older gentlemen who I believe is now running the place. There is talk of hanging art from local artist, there is now music playing in the background and there are whispers of getting new equipment and maybe a convection oven for something like personal pizzas. Slowly, every so slowly they are doing something with the place. Yay! Now let me talk about the food. I highly recommend the biscuits and gravy. The biscuits are "finished" on the grill and it gives them a sort of grilled bread-y, biscuit-y hybrid flavor that can really stand up to the dark sausage gravy. I know they make the gravy on site because I asked. Crumbles of savory pork goodness in every bite! I have been going to the Grill almost every weekend now (easy cause I live upstairs) and I have discovered a new favorite, Eggs Benedict with a side of the biscuits and gravy. Sub out the Canadian bacon for sausage, toss a little pepper on the whole thing and just wow. Oh and did I mention the hollandaise was made from scratch to order?

Before a Timbers game I went inside with a cup of coffee while my boyfriend grabbed a beer. They said if I wanted to keep my coffee that I would need to leave or they would toss my drink. The bartender and who I believe was the owner were very confrontational about a cup of coffee. We left immediately after. Won't be coming back here!

"The Commie" was my neighbor. All my other neighbors loved it dearly, and they couldn't understand when I'd try to get them to meet somewhere else. Anywhere else. I lost and wound up spending countless nights here. I will grant them that it's low key and has cheap stiff drinks and cool drunk bartenders. I like dives, and although this place certainly qualifies, I think it lacks some of the charm that my favorite dives have, like hidden nooks, dark corners, springy booths, and funky art. It's just a little flavorless room with low ceilings. Speaking of flavorless, the food is none too exciting. The same can be said of the fare upstairs in the grill.

What do you want in a bar? You want a heavy pour and a light touch. You want strangely attractive barkeeps. You want those big, squishy fake leather Elk Club seats. You want fellow quaffers who know when to chat you up and when to leave you be. You want more tipsters than hipsters and a good mix of young and old, hotties and hippos, a couple of sketchy dudes, and some people who just got off their shift and need a beer. You want your bartender not to be distracted from his job of refilling your bourbon by having to run around providing...whaddya call that stuff? Oh, yeah, food. Could we also get an amazing jukebox in here? Thanks. That's perfect. Now you've got everything you want in a bar. Just don't mess it up, y'all. It's perfect. It's the Commodore.

The Commodore fulfilled a breakfast need for me and on the cheap. I had a 6-ounce steak and eggs breakfast for $8.00 USD. With coffee, the bill was under ten smackeroos! Service was friendly familiar. A nice gentleman in a cook's uniform came up to my table to inquire about my enjoyment level of their food. I thought that was pretty cool. I'd had only a few bites by then and I honestly told him that it had tasted very good thus far. The steak, at least, was tasty. The sunnyside-up eggs were a bit rubbery. In fact, I had to use my steak knife to cut up the eggs. Nothing was out-of-this-world amazing but the meal was certainly a good value. I definitely will return to try their other breakfast choices, which includes Chicken Fried Steak. We'll see if that favorite of mine will help them earn another star or two.

I tend to think that looking in the windows of a restaurant repeatedly can kind of give an idea of how good it is. If you walk by and it's always busy, then it must be pretty good. If it's always empty, however, there's probably a reason for it. I'd never been particularly keen to visit the Commodore Grill, but one morning in a sense of local pride I decided to stop in. It's only a block away, I'd walked by the place for years... why don't I check it out? Turns out I was better off being uninformed. The service was OK, although the waitress had a lot of trouble understanding that I wanted blueberry compote on my pancakes. She had to return to tell me that they didn't have blueberries. Or the apple compote listed as an option. Basically, I was able to have maple syrup. The rest of the food was fine, but certainly nothing special. The place was nice and quiet, and I was able to read and eat my food undisturbed, but nothing really struck me as making me want to return.

This bar is the best and has the most amazing staff ! The food is tasty and resasonably priced. I would suggest coming to the commodore if you like a fun atmosphere and stiff drinks.

A great dive bar by any standards. My favorite part of the whole place is their matchbooks. They're emblazened with this fancy, posh butler who seems to be saying, "You're booze, sir." Classy...

I have been going to the Commadore for years..it's on Sw 16th at the bottom of The Commadore building near west burnside It's a total hole with stiff cheap drinks. I even know some of the bartenders by name; many have come and gone though. I went there recently with some friends ( we were being nostalgic) and the bar tender that was working was new and really mean. She said she didn't like our attitude and asked us to leave. What the hec! We had just gotten out of work and hadn't even been drinking. I guess it's the end of an era and I won't be returning to the Commadore- Oh well, I'm a grown up now and can afford to drink and eat at nicer places....

  • Courtney D.

I'll keep this one simple: If you love a good dive bar with cheap, strong drinks than this is your place. There's simply not much else to say about, it but if that's your thing, than go for it cause you won't be disappointed here or leave sober.

In the days my husband worked at ART (across the street from the Commode--that's what we nicknamed it), we would frequent this place at lunch. I miss it dearly. If you are expecting top-of-the-line service, fast turnaround for your order, and a completely coherent waitstaff, avoid the Commode. If you just want a relaxing atmosphere and good food, it's an excellent spot. I still secretly have cravings for their burgers and fries....their grilled cheese sandwich is really good, too.

When I decided to head down to the restaurant portion of The Commodore Grill and Lounge the biggest factor was proximity. This place is literally less than a minute from me. The Commodore is usually pretty empty when I've gone there or walked by, with only a few tables with patrons at any given time. Ordering had been a problem. Being a vegetarian I have to order breakfast without the bacon or sausage, and the waitress here had a hard time understanding that request. In fact, when the food came out it was obvious that the meat had never been struck from the order. I ended up having to send it back to get a new dish. Once I actually got my food it was pretty good. Other than the meat blunder the service was alright. The atmosphere is...eh. There's not really a way to describe it other than just eh. I did end up going back a second time, but with all of the other great food places in Portland, I don't have a reason to go back anymore, even given the proximity.

What? Three and a half stars? What? Obviously nobody has been here lately. The grill is slow... Oh so slow! The food is piss poor and flavorless. The lounge may be nice, but if I owned the lounge I would change my name just so I wasn't associated with the food. The cook can only cook one dish at a time, and the only waiter runs around like he is lost. Never again. We may have just hit it on a bad day, but I won't be back to figure that out.

I like this bar! It's close to my house and generally pretty quiet. Every barteneder that's been working when I've been in has been friendly and attentive.

This is the first bar I was allowed to drink at under age. That was a long long time ago. But the Commodore will always have a special place in my heart. That was the days when it had red shag carpet and wood paneling. The red shag was wonderful for when you were so trashed you fell of your bar stool, it would not hurt so bad. It now has more of a sterile remodeled feel to it. But the drinks are still insanely cheap and super strong. And really that is all that counts. Oh and the juke box still rocks!

    (4)
  • Doug Y.

This is more a review of the lounge than the grill. Become a regular in their bar and it's the closest thing to the bar from Cheers you can get. Everyone here is extremely friendly and will make anything you'd like-- be warned though, the drinks can get VERY strong, but luckily you are within stumbling distance to the MAX. They open the pool tables for free if you're nice enough... that and because the coin slots on the things take some love. The charm is appreciated the more you visit, I can't stress that enough. Every patron there is a regular and everyone knows each other. It's a family waiting to expand, and you're welcome to it if you've got the right attitude.
