I have been to Chameleon for dinner on several occasions, attended a wedding there and went to the yelp elite party. This restaurant is a hidden gem in the Hollywood district. The prices are fair and the food is fantastic. The butternut squash raviolis can not be beat - a fall must. Great bar with excellent cocktails, or beer and wine if thats your preference. If you go in the summer - the patio is super fantastic - ample seating, beautiful art, garden and movies every night!

The food is delicious I went for yelp elite party the atmosphere is unbelievable it's a great place to have an event maybe like an engagement party it reminds you of somebody's summer backyard party it was clean the inside is very romantic. Prices are reasonable this is really elegant food I have no complaints

Was never a fan of Coconut Cream Pie until I tried their version: wow! I believe it's their top dessert seller. The restaurant is very understated, not often mentioned as "one to try." Attended a super Yelp event. Great outside space for summer dining and special occasions. Inside, there's some near nooks for privacy, and also for larger parties.

At a special event I enjoyed the skewered shrimp with basil. Lightly dressed seasoning enough to taste the freshness of tender shrimp. Butternut squash empanadas with a white dipping sauce; the sauce complemented the richness of the butternut squash. Pasta with vegetables in a cream lightly spicy sauce. The vegetables were bring green and crunchy fresh. Various selections of cheeses and fresh baked breads; Wow, the blue cheese is so moist and creamy; this is a rare find. So often the cheeses are not maintained properly, however this place knows how to do it. Chicken Satay skewers were done perfectly and the peanut dipping sauce is unique in a very good way. There melons and berry served are in season, sweet and juicy. There is plenty of outdoor and indoor seating for a friendly dinner or a romantic get away. I met the owner and he is passionate about the food served in his restaurant. What a great find ! This is such a quiet hidden big restaurant in a sleepy area of Hollywood District. I can not wait to return.

WOW! is all I can say. Well, that and 500 more words to describe how wonderful every last little thing is about this restaurant! From front to back, this place is gorgeous! The dining room is adorned with giant exotic flower arrangements, chandeliers & candlelight. The covered patio is more of the same, as well as colorful pillows along the bench seating and windows all around. The back deck is HUGE and is covered by sheets of silk and twinkly white lights. Also are a large variety of beautiful plants. Along the restaurant wall is a painted frame with blank canvas that they use to play movies on. Tonight's movie was "Singing in the rain". This is definitively something I have to come back for! Now, the food. I started with curry and coconut milk chicken skewers and peanut sauce, fruit (pear) and cheese (blue). That alone was enough and I could have just gone up for seconds and thirds. But - there was also ground pork & mushroom spring rolls with a sweet chili sauce, bruschetta with tomato, parmesan and basil and the best green bean and carrot pasta salad I have ever had! I think it was the hint of peanut that had me. Lastly, we got to sample deep fried squash turnovers with a cheesy dipping sauce - which was being passed out by a server who walked the room. Those were fantastic as well! For libations, we were served 3 signature cocktails. The Spicy Chameleon, something with the name Captain in it (tropical with a pineapple garnish) and a Basil vodka drink - which was my favorite. I'd be all over the Spicy Chameleon but it wasn't spicy enough. It was for my dinner companions, but I want my lips to be swollen from the heat if you are going to call it "Spicy". Instead, the hint of cucumber made it very refreshing. The owner/chef Pat Jeung circulated and visited with guests. What a lovely and hospitable man! He definitely deserved all the accolades he got for all his years of hard work in perfecting this gorgeous sanctuary in the middle of the city. I can't believe this place has been around for 15+ years - because nothing this great stays such a well guarded secret. Until now, because. I have a very big mouth.

We were there a few nights ago, ate on the patio and everything was fabulous from the cocktails to dessert, it was all exquisitely presented and delicious. The prices are reasonable and the food is always fresh and flavorful! I love the lettuce wraps. We also had risotto with seasonal veggies and it was cooked perfectly.

Yum!!!! Great service! Friendly waiter (can't remember his name). Started with the figs..... If my salty and sweet, my fav! I had the butternut squash ravioli and my friend had the prawns. It was SO good! Dessert was crazy good, and I am not a dessert girl, but we had a hard day at work and we just sorta needed it. I would come back again. The waiter told us that they show movies every night. That would be fun to come back and watch a movie. Five stars for sure, everything was perfect!

We had a family gathering here and the setting was superb. The wine list was great along with the appetizers and the main entrees. Pat the owner made a special cake for my Aunts 94th birthday. I would love to return and sit outside when their is entertainment and movies Thanks for a wonderful event.

A great meal. Gourmet preparation, very stylish presentation, and great service. The chicken curry us wonderful, they customized it for me, and they had a braised lamb special that was to die for. For a fancy place they serve large portions. I was overstuffed and I'm a big guy. I'll go back.

This place is amazing! First you have to start with the Owner Pat....he makes the place in every way! So welcoming, gracious and simply and exquisite chief! The flavors he melts together are nothing short of awesomeness! All his salads are to die for... Spinach salad is my go to and the Caesar is a close 2nd. Butternut squash ravioli is a MUST and the Chameleon wraps as well. His curry is another top choice! Do not forget about dessert they are all great! My fav is his to DIE for coconut cream pie & special cheesecake! Cocktails on point!! Now let's not forget the oh so elegant laid back vibe in the place and the BEST outdoor dining patio you will find anywhere in Portland! Special shout out to Michael one of the top servers you will find and he's adorable too :) professional and helpful love him! Can't say enough good things about this hot spot!!!!!!!!!

Food is delicious, speaking for the chicken curry. Wasn't a fan of the bacon wrapped dates and I've had my share. One of my favorite apps to order if available. The service is amazing and if I get a chance would love to try the rest of their cuisine. Recommend going. Cocktails galore. It's a nice intimate setting casual if you need it to be but definitely longe feel where you can bring family if you want. Would take a date here to impress that's for sure :p.

I really hate to have to give this place only one star but I don't know what has happened here. We have been going here on and off for years but haven't been there in a couple of years. A group of seven of us made reservations for Friday night. The place was not crowded and we were seated on time. We placed our drink order and waited a while to be served. We placed our dinner order and after that we were completely ignored by the waiter. There was a table a few feet away from us with water pitchers on it that we had to get ourselves and pour our own water. We were then served our soup/salad. Then the waiter totally ignored us and never cleared the plates or brought more water nor did he explain the unacceptable amount of time we were waiting which was over an hour by this time. At 90 minutes of waiting one of our party settled the bill for the soup, salad and drinks and we walked out. If the waiter had provided any service and explained the reason for the wait there was a much higher chance we would not have left. We were also thinking of the amount of gratuity that would be added to our bill when the service was non-existent. So we won't be going back again and would not recommend it to others.

A hidden jewel. Wonderful food, service and cocktails. Now they show movies outside too. All BS aside, every so often you may need to take a break from Portlandia and treat yourself to dining in a more relaxed setting and partake in a menu where you can have a meal to savor. Look no further.

My boyfriend and I came here on a Saturday evening in a bit of a time crunch since we were trying to catch a movie after. Our server, Mike, was absolutely wonderful. Attentive, helpful, great attitude and made sure we were out in plenty of time to catch our movie. And the FOOD. It is fantastic, everything we ordered. I especially liked the grilled stuffed dates. It all tasted so fresh and is incredibly appealing to the eye. I also was a huge fan of the fresh flowers everywhere. We didn't sit on the patio, but it looked like an oasis. While I am giving five stars because of Mike's top notch service, great ambiance and killer food... there were a couple of areas of improvement. Get a cocktail menu, please! We don't drink wine and great cocktails with the already amazing food could be a winning combination. Also, once I came in solo and while my server was extremely nice and was well-versed in the food menu, I was brought the wrong drink (inexperienced bartender mixed up two similar classic cocktails?) AND the wrong dessert. I wish he would have written it down! Still, overall a wonderful experience. And if they focused a little more on the bar (cocktail menu and training) then I would probably drive across town and become a regular. Bravo!

While this place is set back in a low key neighborhood it is the perfect place for a dinner date, or a drink at the fabulous old school bar. I just loved the uniqueness of the whole experience here. It feels like a 1950's bar/cafe in Hawaii. The bar strikes me as a wonderful place for an after work drink. The food - While we did not eat entrees, we did sample small plates and the Thai fusion food we had was wonderfully presented and tasty. We paired it with local Oregon red wine. Patio ho! The huge outdoor patio is a real winner. The whole ambiance and set up make it the perfect place to have a drink with friends when you really want to make it quality time. I need to mention this because our group was all about it: Wedding location! Really go check it out if you are looking for a unique place. The women in our group all kept saying "this would be a great place to have a wedding rehearsal dinner or wedding reception." The patio would be perfect for it. The projected old school films on the outdoor patio wall, the quirky mural of the owner, and the attentive and friendly service make this a place to check out inside and out.

I want to thank you for being very kind to a student of mine who had a lovely dinner at Chameleon the other night, She was in dire need of comfort food and you were one of two places I suggested she go in her new neighborhood. Her mother and baby sister died in a terrible oncoming car crash several years ago and just a couple of weeks ago her father had a heart attack and passed away. She is 20 and her brother is 18 and they are all alone in the world. Her 21 year old boyfriend saved up money to take her out and initially they were up the street at a British establishment I recommended. Although it was well before their 9pm cut off for minors-they kicked her out for not being with a parent or guardian! It was a terrible reminder that she has no parents or guardians any more. Fortunately I had also recommended Chameleon but said they may want to save it for a romantic, special date. Well, the smart boyfriend recognized that she needed a little TLC regardless the occasion and they headed your way. You treated them with respect just as you have always treated me and my family. And they said the food was, of course, fantastic. I am so glad I could count on you for a wonderful experience. Thank you for being such a warm, welcoming and loving establishment.

Wow! What an adorable place! From the outside, it looks a little plain - but when you walk inside, it's as if you've been dropped into a darling bistro in Santa Barbara or Montecito. The decor is high end, the outdoor space and covered patio is incredible. Our server/bartender, Mike, was very friendly and quick to work with our group. We were here celebrating a good friend's birthday and mostly had cocktails and shared some appetizers. Prosciutto wrapped dates, bruschetta, shrimp satay, hand wraps, etc. - all of which was very tasty! Will definitely be back again.

Went here for a drink and a dessert around 8:45 on a Friday night. Sat at the bar no bar menu so we decided to go with the basic tom Collins and an old fashioned. Bartender didn't know how to make either of those and had to look both up in a book. EACH drink took 10 minutes to make two of the most common drinks out there! Got the cheesecake which sat at the counter for 15 minutes to be served to us. Was a bit bothered by the wait, but the staff, owner, and environment were nice on a slow Friday night. Then came the bill... Who charges $12 for those drinks?!? That is what put me over the edge and probably not be coming back.

A new favorite restaurant although the Chameleon has been around for 18 years! Located in Hollywood it is easy to miss... Having walked by for years it is unpretentious from the street. You need to step inside to experience the warm ambience, delectable menu, seasoned servers and delightful owner. Our dinner party shared yummy bites of the wild mushroom risotto, cilantro infused Salmon and slow roasted Pork. All superb! What a hidden jewel! I have already made reservations for an upcoming party!!

Great chef/owner, amazing food, can't go wrong with anything on the menu. It's an experience here, people should spend time to come and enjoy this venue, the decor and atmosphere is outstanding, very classic feel and rare these days.

Highly recommend!! Greeted by the owner and sat quickly, even without a reservation. We started with a beer on tap and some prosecco as well as the shrimp satay. All were excellent! We really enjoyed the hospitality and friendliness of the staff. We loved Seamus the bartender and server, he was excellent! The owner thanked us with a handshake as we were leaving. Those personal touches mean a lot. I had the butternut squash ravioli with rosemary cream sauce and fried leeks which was ... Amazing. To say the least. My boyfriend had the grilled pork shank special with a tomato chutney -it was also fabulous! We thoroughly enjoyed the food, and would go back for just that- but the service was wonderful and really sealed the deal for us.

In a word, this place is AMAZING. I really don't know why it seems so off the Portland food scene radar. Tucked into a weird little nook across from McDonald's in Hollywood, this gem is hiding. Let me first say, my husband and I are in our mid-30s and we were by far the youngest there by about 20 years. i'm not sure why that is. It doesn't bother us though, we fit right in. The decor is nice with lots of floral arrangements that give it a garden feel. The lighting is low so it's really intimate. In the corner an old movie is playing on the wall (strange but cool and different), in another corner sits a baby grand piano just dying for someone to play it. There's a small bar for conversing with friends or the nice bartender. Apparently the owner is the chef and waiter. you can tell he pours his heart and soul into this place. Think throw back 50's elegance. The food is fantastic. I got the special of the night which was Dover Sole topped with real fresh crab. LOVED it! My husband got the salmon and it was amazing as well. The drinks are to die for... and the dessert? I can't even think of another word than superb. We got the coconut cream pie. We don't even like coconut cream pie. This stuff is heaven. Like nothing I've had before. Great service too. This our new date night spot. Hope not too many people find out about it...

We checked out Chameleon with a friend after seeing the new Star Trek movie and it's a great little find. You have the option of the dining room or the covered patio and we opted for the patio. I guess we really liked the place because we were here for a couple of hours. We were greeted by a friendly chap who offered the space on the patio. It was bright and airy with open windows, a comfortable breeze, and the temperature was perfect. I love enjoying a good meal with great friends and this was it. My Risotto was excellent. Wild mushrooms and arugula pesto, topped with mascarpone and parmesan cheeses. It was a healthy serving and I could have eaten it all night, it was that good. For dessert we all shared the chocolate cake. OK, I had a bite and the shaved dark chocolate on top is what did it for me. It was excellent. Yeah, we'll do this one again.

This restaurant is truly one of Portland's hidden gems. The food is fresh, seasonal, and beautifully presented, and the atmosphere is one of the most romantic we've come across--love the candles, flowers and classic vibe. The flowers and most of the produce are from Pat's (the chef and owner) Columbia gorge farm, and Pat himself is reason enough to visit. He has traveled literally around the world to bring his patrons an unforgettable dining experience, working with chefs in France, Italy, China, and Thailand, and you will not be disappointed. We have enjoyed absolutely everything we've ordered here. Don't miss the basil martini, the prawn satay, or the tiramisu---best I've ever had.

Karma, karma, karma, karma, karma Chameleon.. you come and go.. you come and go... Had to lose a star. Bummer. I normally am extremely understanding when the server is so-so. However, when a menu has entrees that run between $17-$24, I have to say that the server is a very important part of the experience. I took in the whole scenario. I saw that there were only 2 servers there, and one was the owner. I noted that they were making drinks, waiting tables, bussing tables, and disappearing in to the kitchen, maybe helping in there as well. I also noticed that there were only about 5 tables at 7pm. Not good so far. We ordered drinks and he was unfamiliar with the drink recipes, as well as what some of the liquor brands were. He took our wine glasses away when we had not told him if we were having wine with dinner. When our server took our orders, he went around the table, instead of asking the women first. They have salmon on their menu. I asked where the salmon was from. The server said he did not know, and instead of finding out, he went off (trying to be funny) about this not being out of a Portlandia scene, and he does not know what the fish's name is etc. Haha.. ok, but, salmon is pretty pedestrian, as far as knowing where it comes from. And, I would hope it would be from the Pacific NW, and not the Atlantic ocean.. Since his answer was vague, I decided against it. He's a man without conviction. He's a man that doesn't know. youtube.com/watch?v=JmcA… I ordered their still to-die-for butternut squash ravioli. The sauce is creamy and very flavorful. The raviolis are cooked nicely. It's a good healthy serving. I could lick the plate, ok?? I also ordered their delicious-fresh casear salad. The server's arm would block my view off and on during all the courses of the meal. In other words, he was picking up the plates from wherever he stood, vs. walking around from behind you. The actual food itself is still wonderful. I never get dessert at restaurants but I always get their coconut pie. The crust was a little hard to cut but it did not interfere with the dreamy flavors otherwise. All the stars go for the food here. I think the chef could teach the server a few things to make this a more smoother dining experience. Maybe the server is just a little green, like a chameleon sometimes.

The new outdoor dining/ event space is amazing! Lush flora, string lights, draped fabric billowing like the sails on a boat- outdoor bar and grill, and an outdoor movie screen; this place is next level.

Tucked away a couple blocks away from Sandy Blvd, we found out about Chameleon via a Saturday evening Yelp Search for restaurants in Northeast. When we arrived, we first thought that Chameleon had been rented out for a private party because from the outside we saw all these pink paper balloons hanging in the covered patio. But no, we were still in luck. The "balloons" were the usual decorations, and dinner was available. There was no wait for a table. We were greeted, seated and served on the patio by a friendly staff. Because it is now fall (yay!) and the evenings cool, when it got chilly, one of the staff cheerfully flipped on the heat lamp over us at our request. We came here for dinner, but I'm wondering if they have shows/performances here. By the restrooms were a couple of collage boards with pictures of performers. However, tonight while we were there, it was just music - of the classic romantic genre, e.g. Rosemary Clooney, Dean Martin and Nat King Cole. OK, on to the menu. The grilled dates are to die for! Wrapped in an absolutely perfect and crispy prosciutto, the dates were accompanied by Mascarpone cheese. We were also provided complimentary bread with butter. Curiously - there were three dates in the appetizer...and three slices of bread - just a bit awkward when it is dinner for two. JP ordered the bow tie pasta ($19). Resting in a very low-key garlic sauce, the pasta came with bits of pork, which were good. But for the dish portion, the price was much too high. I went with the cod special ($24). The cod was fresh, cooked just right, served in an interesting tomato sauce and accompanied by finger potatoes. A good dish overall. Dessert was suggested to us by our dapperly-dressed waiter, but we passed. The only area where there could be improvement would be beverage rounds. We were not offered additional rounds, which we wanted. Having said that, Chameleon made me a most excellent naranjada, which is orange juice and seltzer water (our waiter referred to it as "sparkling orange juice").

I had an enjoyable meal here the other night. The atmosphere is dark and cozy. The food was excellent. The lone waiter was also the lone bartender. He somehow managed to do it all in an efficient manner even though there was a group event with many attendees who came to him for drinks all at the same time. He was really great. I had the chicken curry dinner. The food was good, albeit not remarkably different from any other chicken curry I've ever had. And I have had many. What was different was the price! $21 for chicken curry. Shame on me for being a sucker and paying this much here when I could have gone to many other thai restaurants in the area and purchased the same dinner for half the cost. But I was curious about a $21 chicken curry as well as the restaurant. I doubt I'll be back for this very reason. Every item on their menu is over priced.

Given the reviews we were disappointed. Appetizer of prosciutto wrapped dates and spinach salad were very good; main courses of salmon prepared two different ways were uninspiring and uninspired. The main courses were fine, but nothing special.

Every time I come here it just gets better! The food is amazing and I always try something from another part of the world! Last time was Italy, and this time it was Thai. Tom yum soup~ YUM! I like that the food can please anyone and I love to invite my friends to have dinner with me here because of this! And I love the tiramisu! You have to try it! The place is so cute and romantic inside... there is a grand piano that sometimes gets played and sounds amazing! There is also an old black and white movie that is projected on one of the windows ~ adds to the charm of this place! So many tiny details make this place amazing! I will have to come back to try all the different foods, and enjoy the atmosphere!

Hold up!!! I must have read the reviews for the wrong place because there's no way this place upheld the expectations we had when we dined here. My group wanted to eat before catching a film at Hollywood. Doing a yelp search, we came across this place with such positive reviews thus prompting a trip here for dinner. Um maybe we walked into the wrong place? First it was around 6 pm on a Saturday, with only a handful of patrons dining. The waiter, as awkward as he was (picture Lurch from Addams Family), came off quite rude as if though we didn't belong there. I'm sorry was there a dress code that we were suppose to abide by? Not sure what his problem was but he provided shiesty service if any at all. I have the uttermost respect for people in the service industry but really there's no need to provide crappy service unless customers are being jerks. We were not...that being said, excuse me waiter can I get some more water? Tick tock tick tock...15mins later. So with the waiter providing such excellent service we decided to start with our rounds of appetizers. Mind you, we pretty much ordered every app there was. Eggrolls - burnt. Grilled dates - burnt. Shrimp satay - burnt. Chameleon wraps - no flavor. Well hell that just ruined dinner, check please! Maybe the Chameleon wasn't use to it's surrounding? Normally I don't write such poor reviews but I couldn't even picture what the entrées would have tasted like after having their appetizers. I'm just hoping they had just purchased new cooking equipment or new chef but it wasn't worth the experience. We ended up settling for popcorn and sodas at the Hollywood.

We've walked by this place multiple times thinking it was closed - man WTF were we thinking?!? I don't know how it happened, but we walked in through the patio and realized not only are they open, they have a beautiful covered patio - with space heaters - so I'm guessing this is a year-round thing. Really the menu IS good, the drinks ARE good, and the selection of veggie options are a-plenty. We even had dessert, which we both really enjoyed. We will be back!!

  • Sandy G.

I don't get it.....really I don't get. Are all the good reviews about this place true. I should of known it wasn't going to be mind blowing as soon as we walked in and felt un-greeted by the hipsdouché waiter. Ok, long story short we got all the appetizers. Everything came out burnt and drenched in grease. The only food item that was "aight" was the chameleon wraps, but even that was kinda salty. I am glad I decided to starve myself and not try any of the entree dishes. Place is to expensive for what they deliver. In the words of Men On Film, "Hated it!"

We were introduced to Chameleon a couple of years ago and it quickly became our favorite restaurant in Portland. The Tom Yum soup is the best soup I have ever had - it is a MUST have. I have tried every entree so I generally order whatever the special is. I have not had anything that I did not enjoy. Service is great and the drinks are quite good as well. Pat - owner - introduced us to St. Germaine with one of his concoctions which is now a regular starter cocktail for us. I'm amazed that Chameleon is not packed every night. Good for us to get a table when we want. I can only assume that it is do to the location off of the beaten path a couple blocks off of Sandy in the Hollywood District. It is worth looking for - amazing food!

I will meet you at the strange Restaurant across from McDonald's. This is the Chameleon. Driven past it on my way home lots of times and never thought twice of it, till I met my little lady friend for drinks. I don't think there is a happy hour..so don't even think about it. But, very Gothic Christmas sexy. Low lights, lots of lights and an old movie playing, one bartender on a quiet night who was very nice. I saw some food come out and it looked tasty. I had to quiz the dapper gentlemen about the Thai Steak Salad..but I didn't order any food, so can't really say how it tasted. But it is a warm, cozy place to have a Hot Toddy or what have you. $8 a drink though..didn't see that coming.

I had an great experience at the Chameleon tonight. It's only my first visit, but I will give The Chameleon my highest endorsement and I will definitely go back, and will encourage my friends to go as well. Food was great. Ambiance was clever and enjoyable. Service was fun. What more do you want? Went back a second time. Still Good.

Tough to find but totally worth it. Stopped in for a midweek late dinner, and we were HUNGRY. Service was quick, even though it looked like there was exactly one waitperson for the six or so full tables. He doubled as a bartender too. A good one at that. I asked if the had a cocktail menu... he said no but they make a mean basil martini which worked perfectly with my green papaya salad with grilled prawns. My friend agonized between the risotto and the butternut squash ravioli. She chose the risotto and raved. Overall the menu is very diverse, almost odd. I wouldn't have expected to see a menu with a bufula mozzarella appetizer *and* green papaya salad, but hey, they can pull it off. The check was so reasonable I had to double check to know that it was right. We'll be back. I say support this place. They work hard, they want you to have good experience and the food is really good.

On the recommendation of a good friend, I hosted my mom's 50th birthday party at Chameleon. We had a party of about 12 women all wearing wigs, since that was our theme. Our server was exceptional, the owner made his presence throughout the night, and we enjoyed a number of drinks and entrees that seemed to please everyone. While we were a bit of a rowdy bunch, everyone around - staff and guests included - seemed to join in on our fun. I loved the menu and the intimate atmosphere, and though we visited in November, their patio area seemed like a great spot for warmer weather dining. The only caveat was when I ordered the chocolate hazelnut dessert, I only meant to order a slice of it for my mom as a birthday dessert - which I thought would be complimentary and was told it would be. Instead, the owner must have misunderstood and brought out the entire dessert for the table, and of course charged me for it - which was like $45 to $50 bucks if I recall correctly. Not a big deal, but an expense I was not expecting. Overall, a fine place for two - or twelve! :)

The atmosphere here is calm, warm, and romantic. In fact, it's a perfect spot for a first date. The youthful and friendly staff add to the ambiance making you feel very at ease. The bartenders always have great drink suggestions too. If you like well crafted, decadent drinks they can make them! I've had the date, wrap, and bruschetta appetizers. All three are amazing! The rack of lamb and curry chicken entrees are delicious, but my favorite is the butternut squash ravioli. Sooo good!!! I'm far from a vegetarian, but this dish could turn me into one. ;) YUM, YUM, YUM. Great look, great feel, great food. :)

We've eaten here a few times, and while the food has been pretty good overall, I've always gotten the feeling that the place is more of a hobby than a business. It always feels like an understated grand opening - somewhat unpolished pomp, but without any expectation of improvement. They have a chic web site that doesn't work much of the time. We usually visit during the summer when the little patio is open - actually it's more of a large wooden palette that stands next to a drive which isn't used as a drive, but simply causes the waiters to run across it. Last night we sat inside. The building is quirky, with three facades, but only one of them is real. We tried the entrance doors in the first two facades, only to find them blocked, but finally found the real front around back. Inside, they were they were projecting some old cowboy movie onto the wall. Our waiter was amateurish, but managed to muddle through our order, and brought the goods without incident. They make a wonderful ravioli, and last night was no exception - it was wonderful.

Chamelion is Hollywood's hidden treasure. I've eaten here twice and loved the food, service, and atmosphere. The menu is innovative with French and Thai touches, service was attentive and the decor is intimate and slightly European. The Manhattan I ordered was the best I've had in many years. I find the prices quite reasonable, and every dish has been excellent. Part of me wants to keep this secret to myself, The atmosphere was nice and romantic. The food which was not only beautiful but very tasty as well. The service was topnotch and I'm sure to go back soon and they deserve lots of business.

Love this restaurant! It has a really classy and casual atmosphere with great service. The food is amazing and on top of that, there is excellent bar service as well. I'm fairly new to the place, but it impresses me every time and I will forever be a regular customer! I 100% recommend it for any event, whether it's a large party celebration or a more intimate and personal occasion.

This is my favorite restaurant. The food here is unlike anything I've had in Portland. You can tell the ingredients are fresh and chosen with care. The atmosphere is romantic, so much so that my fiancé proposed to me here. Right after, the owner/chef rushed over with champagne flutes and a toast. He always makes a point to greet us whenever we are there. I can't recommend this place enough.

well, nothing less than perfect. Not to sound silly but this spot is simply awesome. Amazing food, desert and wine. Had an awesome night. Awesome enough to jump on line and tell others about it. Go here, you will not be disappointed. 5 stars from the service, atmosphere, food and drink. I will be back, Chameleon, you have gained a fan. A fan with a large appetite for good food and wine.

This place was FAN-EFFING-TASTIC!!! Every single food item we ordered were soooooo delicious and full of flavor. The cocktails were also out of this world, as well as the staff. 100% full on recommend!

Unlike, most of the people here, I think I went on a very off day. This place isn't close to perfect so don't let the good reviews fool you into thinking that this place will change your life. All I wanted was good food and decent service, and I got neither. There's better out there.

The soup was fantastic as was the house salad. I had the rack of lamb and have not complaints. The service was as good as the food. I am definitely going back. The soup alone is enough.

This is one of my favorite restaurants. Unpretentious yet almost glamorous. The staff are wonderful. Came here with a New York friend I hadn't see in almost 15 years. We weren't sure which wine to choose. Because my friend was from New York, we had to have a Pinot Noir. Patrick picked a wonderful wine for us. Flavorful, but not overpowering and magically, because that is what Pinots do, it fit all our meal choices (rack of lamb, grilled pork, and the special of the day (spicy (but not hot) talapia! We started with the Chameleon wraps, and finished with two desserts, the famous and wonderful coconut creme pie and the chocolate torte. The conversation fell silent for a moment as everyone just wanted to concentrate on their foods, and then the conversation switched from our trip to Mount St. Helens to our wonderful meals. The patio/porch was not quite ready for primetime viewing, but I signed up on the Chameleon mailing list to make sure I get an invitiation to the grand opening in a few weeks. Thank you Chameleon for making the end of great time with my friend, wonderful. Its like one of those secret finds you want to enjoy to yourself and a few friends, but also tell everyone about.

This restaurant has to be one of the best places that remains a little hidden secret in Portland. The restaurant is intimate and beautifully decorated. During the summer the patio is lovely. The menu changes yearly-based somewhat on where the chef and owner has traveled to most recently.....and is adventurous and tasty. The presentation well executed, and good wine pairings available. I've never been disappointed and look forward to many more meals here.

Voodoo food! That is how I describe the food at the Chameleon. Addicting like a drug is another way to describe it. Pat Jeung is an artist when it comes to food...he has an ability to bring ingredients together and to just the right level so that everything works together. My favorite is the butternut squash ravioli, but anything on the menu is excellent. The atmosphere is cozy and intimate and always clean. If you are expecting a place to jump into for a quick bite, then this is not the place for you! Service can be slow sometimes, but with a good drink, atmosphere, appetizers, and folks to talk to it is never a problem. Be sure to leave room for dessert!

"Some people wait a life time, for a moment life this..." Dear boyfriend, If you are going to do the typical date night at a fancy yet hidden, charming, and exclusive restaurant, romantic dinner, excellent services, wonderful food, and delicious salivating desserts that contains a ring hidden in it, and especially if you want me to say yes, please propose here. :-D This place is like a romantic hidden hideaway for couples. It's so elegantly beautiful, even the bathroom is decorated and lighted with chandeliers. I happen to love Phantom of the Opera and find the ambiance of this place quite like it. All the decorations also make me feel like I'm in Camelot. This place is small, so not too many people so that I won't be completely embarrassed. I highly recommend you hide the ring in the creme brulee and not the coconut pie because I most likely will swallow it if it's in the coconut pie. Yes, the coconut pie is that good! The creme brulee that has won a dessert competition at this place is so velvety smooth, creamy, and delicious that it tastes like butter melting in my mouth, balanced by strawberries and blue berries on top. So please, while I'm experiencing a major dessert orgasm, it would be heavenly to find a ring inside. Love always, N.D.

This place is so yummy. I took my Dad and his friend here for dinner. The owner and chef is usually there and he also owns his own farm and grows a lot of what he cooks with. The menu has something for everyone, but I always order the butternut squash ravioli served in a rosemary cream sauce. It is so fluffy and light! I have also tried the Salmon which was cooked to perfection but had a bit too much lime flavor. The desserts are wonderful too and also homemade!!! I love the cheese cake with berry compote drizzled on top. Other pluses include lots of parking, off the beaten path in the Hollywood district, not crowded and pretty affordable. The bar is fully stocked and looked like a great place to sit and have a few drinks.

Amazing food and the staff is about as good as it gets. Have been in twice, they welcomed me back the second time. Sit at the bar and order the Chameleon Torch as an after dinner drink. Menu rotates but seems like there is not a bad thing on it.

The chef here lives to produce beautiful food that tastes as good as it looks. The food is always creative and always good. We have eaten here for years. When we first discovered the Chameleon, it was a wonderful find when Hollywood had few outstanding restaurants. Thai and Italian influences are common, and often combine in the same dish. The chef is not afraid to use uncommon pairings that are great eating adventures. The restaurant and staff are low-keyed but very knowledgeable. In season, the chef's own farm often supplies fresh ingredients - from lettuce to the edible flowers that adorn salads. Desserts are as creative as the rest of the food. We typically drink beer and wine, but our friends tell us that the mixed drinks are creative and well crafted. We continue to return and are always rewarded with great, beautiful food served by a attentive staff in a nice atmosphere.

I was on a dessert quest. An adventure to find something sweet, cold, and satisfying one rainy night. With a Chameleon groupon in my pocket, a buddy and I decided to give this place a shot after hearing the Chameleon restaurant rep say "DESSERTS? Why we have many many kinds of desserts. Banana cream pie, tiramisu, creme brulee! We even have coconut homemade ice-cream with little flakes of coconut and a rasberry sorbert today!" And this was only half of what he said, because in the midst of all that, I was going through information& excitement overload. And when I found the place, I was surprised that this place didn't just have a good selection of desserts, but an satisfying dinner menu. I had their seared salmon with veggies& rice and it was really good. Had a nice flavor and everything. It also gave a Casa Blanca kind of vibe with the melted candles, large bar on the side. I could totally see myself all scholarly here, sipping a glass of Merlot, and waving that glass around while reciting Aristotle. And with the dimmed lights, and the flowers sweetly arranged on each table, it also makes a great date place. Anyway, back to the desserts! The creme brulee and coconut cream pie were awesome and well worth every bite. I'm sad that I couldn't try their homemade ice-cream. So if you have dinner here, don't dare to skip the desserts!! P.S. They're only open for dinner Weds-Sat nights now.

Best Risotto and Tiramisu In Town! The chef always comes out to greet us. We first visited this location for a friend's birthday, but then slowly we've been bringing our friends out for quaint dinners out on the town. We highly recommend the Chameleon for date night without kids.

Found my way here with my best friend after purchasing a groupon many months ago... and wow what a delight. As the other reviews say, it's a treasure. We had a wonderful evening of great food, drinks and the coconut pie is to die for! We will be back.

This is truly a hidden gem in the Hollywood district; literally it was hidden by massive trees out in front of the restaurant, I missed it the first time I drove by. Apparently it was an old fish-n-chips joint. Don't let the exterior fool you. Moving on, this place has character, intimately decorated with wonderfully intricacies (check out the candlesticks on the way to the bathroom). There is a covered patio that is great for the slightly chilly nights that seem to extend into summer here. There was a Marylene Monroe movie playing silently above the bar that added to the vintage look. This place is perfect for a quiet romantic dinner. I made reservations, but none were needed; there was plenty of room on a Saturday night. The wait staff was pleasant and helpful. Our waiter was pulling double duty at the bar as well and he was well up to handle both tasks well. The menu is varied and has a mix of Asian, American, and European flavors. I had the special salmon. The layers of flavors were amazing, perfectly cooked fish and excellent accompaniments. My girlfriend had the vegetarian butternut squash ravioli and it was wonderful in its simplicity. The plates are artistically decorated and and every dish is topped with a little edible flower. The desert was good, but nowhere near the excellence of the main course. Highly recommended. We will be back.

Wow, seriously? The only reason I gave this place one star is because there isn't an option for no stars, and some of the food was decent but i couldn't get this "bad taste" out of my mouth... Shall I elaborate? Our reservation was for 8:00 on saturday night and we showed up a little early and pretty much got seated right away.. we looked over the menu and waited for our waiter to come by and take our drink orders.. we waited.. and waited.. and waited.. to the point that we discussed just walking out.. The only reason we stayed is because we had a groupon and it was going to expire.. We noticed that there seemed to be only one server, one "bus boy/server in training" (who's tasks included bringing tables bread, of which we had none, lighting candles, and clearing dishes as though he was in an "all time slow ass" competition), and the owner, who was busy being toolish and doing bad bottle tricks behind the bar.. After we we're there about 20min without anyone so much as acknowledging our presence, I flagged down the "bus boy" guy and asked to to grab our waiter so we could at least get a drink order in. He looked as though if he had a tail, it would have been deep between his legs.. poor lil' guy.. Then the waiter came by and acted as though we had just walked in, even though it felt like i had already carved my very own butt print in the damn booth, i asked if they were short staffed and he said that they were and since the groupon was expiring soon, they we're really busy.. Riiiiight.... so the why the F*ck is tweedle dee (bus boy/server in training) and tweedle DUMBEST (owner) not chipping in on the load? HELLO? It did seem like a lot for one server, but give me a break. I felt like telling the owner who was "busy" lighting candles, to put down the damn matches unless he planed on lighting a fire under his own ass.. So, since we had all had AMPLE time to look over the menu at that point, I put my whole order in, A split of Veuve with our salad, and a glass of pinot with the rack of lamb. Then he took my boyfriends drink order and skipped right to our friend who ordered a cocktail and an app. When she asked what kind of vodka they had, he grunted and said that he was in a hurry and it would be easier if she just knew what she wanted. I almost laughed, it was so rude. Then my boyfriend had to catch him to put in his entree order before he ran off.. The waiter came back to inform me that they were out of veuve and they only had one split left, (which was $35, as opposed to $9 for the veuve). "Fine" I said, and he poured it and left. (we still had no bread at this point). A good 10 more min went by and our dining companion's cocktail hadn't arrived, though the bread and our salad had (the waiter said he would put a rush on our food). So, again, I flagged down the "bus boy" and asked him to check on our friends drink order. He said he would, and about 10 min later we saw the drink, a complicated cocktail of vodka, soda, and lemon, sitting up on the bar. It had been there for quite a while, and our friend was frustrated to the point that she considered just getting it herself, when someone finally brought it to her. It was also around this time that I noticed we weren't the only pissed off patrons, and a new couple had just been seated at a table in the sun room/patio area. I felt bad for them... By this time my boyfriend and I had finished our spinach salad which was mediocre at best. The "walnuts" described on the menu looked as though they were the crumbles from the bottom of a bag, and the overly garnished plate seem quite unnecessary during a time when order volume was far exceeding the kitchens abilities to pump food out.. when I finished my champagne, the dog boy brought out my glass of pinot, which i thought meant the rest of our food would arrive soon, since I ordered the red with my lamb. Duh. About 30 min passed when I saw the owner come out of the kitchen with a couple plates (one of which was a rack of lamb), and head in our direction. I almost shouted "hallelujah!" when he breezed right by our table and serve the couple who had been seated around the time when we were finising our salad 30 min earlier.. WTF?! I stopped him on the way back into the kitchen (apparently at some point between being a douche bag and lighting candles he figured out that maybe he should lend a hand), and asked him why our food was taking so long when he had just served a table that had been seated LONG after we had. "You're next" was all he had to say. No "i'm sorry for the delay", or "please forgive me for running a embarrassingly inefficient restaurant", or "you'll have to excuse me, it's been a long day for dumb asses everywhere".. When our food came, over 90min later, it was ok. The lamb was good, but the potatoes were vinegary, and the grilled zucchini was lack lustre/not seasoned. I didnt try anyone else's food, I just wanted to leave. Dont go here if you want to avoid pulling your hair out

This was, hands down, the very best food I have ever eaten! Sort of out of the way, but worth getting lost before finding it. Three of us went and each had a different entree; each was fantastic. Salmon, chicken, and ravioli, were wonderful. I also had a cup of soup for starters and I would die for the recipe! I will make every attempt to return even though I live 8 hours away! I have to try the desserts next time; just no room after this scrumptious dinner! And wine varieties for every palate. And special flaming after dinner drink.....

Hidden gem is right! Stumbled across this review a few hours before heading there for dinner on a weeknight and no reservation was necessary. The inside is dimly lit with an old Hollywood vibe. From what I could tell there were only two people running the place that night: the bartender/waiter and the cook. Serivce was a bit slow and was ok by my party (my parents flew in from the east coast and met my boyfriend for the first time eeeeek!!!!). I asked the bartender to make me his speciality which turned out to be a basil martini which is not to be missed (and I sucked down to quickly take the edge off of the situation!!) The menu is a clash between Thai and Pacific Northwest fare. Lots of fresh seafood entrees as well has yummy salads. The scallops were incredibly fresh and probably the best I have had in the area. Everything was very reasonably priced and everyone left the meal satisfied and liking each other (whoo hooo!!!) Can't wait to go back here again! Perhaps with just my boyfriend and no parents ;-)

Had the house special 7-course Valentine's dinner there last night. Excellent food, although not all courses were superior. The particlar hits of the meal were the scallops, soup, salad, sorbet, and lamb. The tuna tartare, while fresh and beautifully served, was surprisingly bland and unremarkable. The desert was pretty, but not exceptional. The wine list here is super, the wait staff excellent, and the atmosphere charming. Their regular menu is nice, varied, and very consistent. A suggestion to Patrick, the DELIGHTFUL owner: get rid of the clutter! I realize storage is likely at a premium, but in the hallways and other areas, there are stacks of papers and boxes and other things that threaten to take away from the charm and could strike some people as messy. This is especially true in the hallway from the dining room to the restroom -- a high-traffic area where people are going to notice the clutter. Thanks for a delightful evening!

Wonderful birthday dinner late Friday night -- we sat on the romantic porch and enjoyed a delightful dinner. Very attentive owner and staff, but they left us alone too. Prepped our table with festive ribbons and confetti, but no more silly birthday stuff, which I'm not a fan of for adults. I'm overwhelmed by the quality of the food and the prep: I had the cilantro salmon and my partner the chicken curry. Both were among the best we've ever had, and we order this combo a LOT when eating out. A great neighborhood vibe, terrific ambiance, but you'd never expect the food to be this good across the street from a MickeyD's. I was blown away, and will definitely return, not just for special occasions. Note: they are not open every night, so plan accordingly.

Food was pretty good, but about $10 over priced for each entree. The service however was horrible. Our server tried his best, but one server on a Friday night in a 90 seat (albeit half empty) restaurant is ridiculous. I don't really blame the guy, based on his apologies before we even sat us down, his apologies to other tables as they just gave up and left, and the apologies throughout the meal, dude got that service was running a bit rough for the evening. Took about 15 minutes for us to get water. Half our table never actually got menus. We had enough time to pass them around and memorize them prior to our orders being taken. Fast forward another hour, and we got a free app (one spring roll per person) when we asked when our food was going to come out. Another 15 minutes of contemplating running to Mcdonalds across the street (about 90 minutes after our 7:30 reservation) and our food finally comes out. If the chef wasn't also poorly playing ambiance master (lighting the ridiculous candles), hostess, server, and gabbing with his friends that came in, it might not have taken so long for us to get our food. Also of note was anyone that he hugged as they came in, got their food 15 minutes after sitting down. 90 minutes for us. Food was pretty good, nothing special. Again, I would have gladly paid 10-15 bucks, but 20-24 is a bit much. Ambiance is a little weird - food is asian/pacific, but the decor is cheap tacky Mediterranean (fake grape vines, peacock feathers, cherubs on the ceiling, candelabras). We may have shown up on a night when a few waitstaff quit? But the rude owner made no play to make up for it, save the one appetizer an hour after we arrived.

My husband and I just tried this restaurant the other night. We went right when it opened on a weeknight, so we were the only ones dining, but it didn't matter; we enjoyed ourselves thoroughly. The ambiance was very unique--intimate and elegant, yet relaxed. The service was impeccable. The food was the best we've had in a long time. We had the scallop and winter squash risotto and the braised ox tail with polenta. Both were so different and delicious. Can't wait to go back when the weather warms and the patio opens up. They also have a nice looking bar.

I was looking for a nice romantic restaurant to dine with my wife while visiting Portland. Yelp was a huge help. I read the reviews of this place which except for a couple of very negative ones were all solid. My suggestions to those who had a bad experience is to try it again. My wife and I couln't have been happier with our selection. The restaurant is in a quiet neighborhood setting with ample parking for it's size. I would suggest reservations because of their limited number of tables even though we didn't need ours the Saturday night we were there. There is dining both inside and out with a full bar and fairly large wine list. What struck me first was the music selection, while not live, it was soft and romantic with some in French just to add to the ambiance. I ordered a double Dewars as a cocktail and the pour was generous, not pre-measured to the 10th of an ounce like many corporate establishments. The Waiter Adrian brought it promptly as well as our Smoked Salmon Bruschetta appetizer which was delicious. We ordered the Rack of lamb for myself which was done perfectly to medium rare and the Butternut Squash Ravioli for my wife which was insanely good. I love meat but could easily have switched entrees. My wife usually leaves have her meal but not in this case. All the reviews mention how great the coconut cream pie is here so we had to try it. It's the best ever. We split one leaving me wishing I had ordered my own. All in all a perfect evening for two visitors from Maui. I only wish this restaurant was in my neighborhood! Thanks for a wonderful evening! Andy & Tammie

My fiance and I rang in the New Year at Chameleon and had an absolutely wonderful time! The atmosphere was great, they were showing "Sabrina" with Audrey Hepburn on a screen in the corner of the bar, and was just the right size so it felt like an intimate romantic dinner spot. We arrived early for our reservations and sat at the bar to wait, had some really yummy cocktails (ginger mint mojito with local portland rum) with very friendly bartenders. We had a 5 course tasting menu which was very good; surprisingly the least favorite dish for both of us was our main course - however the butternut squash soup was perhaps the best I've ever had. The owner was there and held a countdown at midnight after handing out poppers, hats, and noisemakers. They cleared the tables and made it into a dance floor complete with little disco ball! It made for a really enjoyable, festive evening. I'd really like to go back and try the regular menu, and try more on their great wine list!

When I walked in there was only one couple in the restaurant (8:15pm) which almost made me walk out... but then the yelp reviews were sooo good. I ordered the lamb which tasted different than typical. It was more of a steak consistency and flavor but i liked it. Not a huge serving size for the price and the sides were so typical and didn't taste like a 5 star yelper to me. I did enjoy my meal even though the service was friendly but not attentive enough (especially when most of my meal I was the only one there).

I can't say enough good things about this place: 1) Service was fantastic -- very efficient but personable 2) The dinner was perfection. My wife had scallops, I had the rack of pork. Both were the best we've had - and my wife used to cook at Atwaters, so she knows good cuisine. 3) The owner makes a point of ensuring everyone is comfortable and has a good time. 4) Prices are reasonable, exceptionally so given the quality of the food. 5) The owner has an organic farm in the gorge where he grows much of the produce used in the kitchen. This is a hidden gem of a restaurant. It's probably one of our favorites after last night.

I wonder why this place isn't on people's radar since it has been around for like 10 years I hear. And the menu is always evolving. I felt bad that I didn't take my husband here since it's kind of romantic. But it was also fun for girl's night. I was there kind of early, but I think the outdoor patio is going to amazing during the summer. There is even an separate patio for those who want to bring their dogs everywhere. The food was yummy and I wish I could have stayed for a full dinner.

I didn't know what rating to give this place. The food was great and the ambiance was nice. But the service was bad and this place is closed a whopping three nights a week, which is a big ding against them. We had a groupon to use here and it took us months before we were finally able to use it since they are closed Sunday, Monday, AND Tuesday, which happen to be the three most convenient nights for us to eat out. Despite having a reservation and there being many empty tables when we arrived, we waited at the door for nearly 10 minutes before we were seated. When our order was finally taken, our wine took forever to appear. Fortunately the food was fantastic. We had the cilantro salmon and the curry. Very yum. After our meal, we had been there so long by that point that we wanted the bill so we could pay and leave, but that took a long time too. I don't know if they were just down a server for the night, or what, but I couldn't believe how SLOW everything was. Bottom line: great food, but that's all you can expect here.

After reading the reviews for this place, my husband and I decided to try it out. It definitely did not disappoint!! The atmosphere and decor of the restaurant itself was very warm and inviting, and reminiscent of a nice little spot you'd find in Europe... lots of candles and flowers but not over the top at all. The waiter was very helpful and eager to serve with a smile on his face. The food was amazing... alive with flavor and super fresh. The only disappointment was no creme brulee on the dessert menu, but this did not take away from our wonderful experience. The icing on the cake was when the owner came around to personally ask how our dinner was and to wish us a good evening... what a great first impression for a restaurant! So nice to find people who really make you feel like it is a pleasure to serve you!! With that and the amazing food, we will definitely be back!

My husband's co. xmas party was here last week. Small, private restaurant setting, great lighting, great waitstaff (we had a group of 10), impressive menu (good variety)... I asked for the Butternut Squash Ravioli to be made vegan and they said absolutely no problem and then brought me my own side dish of basil/olive oil/balsamic vinegar for the bread (the other had bleu cheese in it). The entree was a little slow coming to the table, but we did have a large group and everyone said their meal was delicious. Also, although I didn't try it, everyone else raved about the Tom Yum Soup (Thai style hot and sour soup)---"the best ever." The prices are on the higher end of what I'm used to spending on dinner (avg. $20 entree), but I would definitely go back for an anniversary or birthday dinner.
