Mexican Cuisine
If you enjoy Taco Tuesday, then you have officially fallen in love with the Mexican Food. The main grain of Mexican cuisine is maize. Also known as corn, maize is grown for the past 9000 years after the crop was discovered by the people in Mayan civilization. Mexican empire flourished when they started growing beans, tomatoes, chili pepper, sweet potato and cactus. Till this date these ingredients are used in cooking authentic Mexican dishes and drinks.
Great use of spices, fresh chili pepper dishes like fajitas, tortilla chips, corn chips, salsa, chimichangas, burritos, nachos and quesadillas are invented in America. But when you are looking for authentic Mexican food then you must find a restaurant in the city that serves Rajas con Queso, Garbanzo in a Guajillo Chile Sauce, Pork Filled Chiles Rellenos, Chiles en Nogada, Molcajete Salsa, Pico de Gallo and Frijoles de la Olla. An eye-opening fact – Mexican don't like their food hot. They use fresh chili and other spices to create a flavor that lingers in your mouth.
Mexican food is great for those who are Gluten Intolerant as they use Corn instead of wheat in most of their dishes. Also, you can easily find many beans based Mexican dishes. Another dish which didn't get similar glory as tacos or nachos is the Mexican hot chocolate. If you love something hot on a chilly day, then go for Mexican Hot Chocolate. On merry days, you can enjoy the authentic Mexican Drinks like Tequila, Mezcal, Tecuí, Sotol, Bacanora, Charanda, Posh O Pox, Puebla and Pulque. Mexican Cuisine is for people who enjoy strong drinks and hearty meals.

5 stars for service. Visited Burrito Bar a little while ago with my dog who was new to the city. I left him waiting outside while I went inside to order. Through the glass, I could see him anxiously waiting for me (it was his first time outside alone), and he started to whine a little. A man, whom I believe to be the owner, came up to me as I was ordering and asked if that was my dog outside. When I said yes, he told me that they are dog-friendly and whenever I stop in, just bring him right on in. He then got a bowl of water and sat outside with him while I finished paying. They were so sweet! I'd definitely be back if for nothing else than to support this little business. Why go to some random Chipotle when I have these lovely businesspeople to support?! Oh, and the food isn't half bad either. They have a grill right outside on the sidewalk that is always pumping out delicious-smelling meat.

Ignore the bad reviews. This place rocks. Economical, fast, and high quality. The meats are abundant and delicious. Lots of these reviews seem written by Portland "foodies" whom only gouge and don't cook. (Why would you ever find validity in someone's opinion about food who doesn't cook?) I had listened to the collective and ditched this place for its 3.5 stars, I'd be a sad guy. This place is fantastic. The staff is a family and they are incredibly kind. They let me sample their meats, and the pork was out of this world. Everything has a Jamaican twist and is moist and fresh tasting. And finally, a burrito bar with refried beans. Praise the burrito gods. I crafted a burrito with pork, refried, sour cream, pineapple salsa, Jamaican jerk sauce, cilantro, and cheese, - it was one my top 5 burritos ever. Kicks the hell out of cafe rio, baja fresh, chipoltle, everything. Clean joint, excellent staff, and fresh food. Don't be fooled by the excellent branding btw, it's not a franchise. All local. Did I mention I got all of that for $7? Yeah. Go, give it a try.

This was AMAZING!!! Big Portions (this coming from a 300+ dude) Definitely filled me up. Lot's of very cool options for building your burrito. Gucamole was excellent as well. I definitely will return. I did notice on the way out they have a delivery company they partner with may need to check that out. Only was able to find street meter parking. Staff was very cool about teaching a new guy the ropes. This does fall into what I describe as a "Portlandy" vibe and I liked it.

I recently purchased a Groupon for 2 burritos from Burrito Bar. The menu seemed great and reviews were decent. Walked inside and my first reaction to the place was the feeling of dirty and grungy. It just doesn't look clean...like at all. The burritos had potential to be enormous depending on how much you want inside. Mine had Spanish rice, beans, queso, chipotle pineapple, salsa and sour cream. I was pumped. Unfortunately, it tasted so bland :( The only positive was waiting for the next bite with a piece of juicy pineapple. The rest of the ingredients were yuck! The Groupon saved me a few bucks and I still wouldn't refer a friend to visit here.

I haven't written a review on Yelp before, but I had to break the silence with my experience at Burrito Bar. I would probably rate the food itself as 3.5-4 stars - it was tasty enough, but the rice and beans were crusty, and the guacamole was watery. However, the service is where I ran into the real problem. Besides the servers being very slow (think more than half the speed of chipotle), the cashier was incredibly condescending once I showed her my voucher from Groupon. I purchased a Groupon for 3 burritos/bowls and 3 drinks, and visited the restaurant previously to redeem the voucher. The owner of the store marked the Groupon as redeemed and gave me a paper voucher to be hole punched each time I redeemed one of the meals. However, all of the employees seemed to have never seen the voucher when I came in the second time. The cashier called on the help of other employees, who treated me like I was trying to scam them. The cashier then tried to insist that the Groupon was for one burrito/bowl and one drink after 3 visits to Burrito Bar. Another employee went to the back to speak with the manager, and then tried to offer 50% off my meal. Having paid the full price of the Groupon ($19), I was annoyed by his refusal to honor the full extent of the Groupon. I pulled up my Groupon app and showed him the voucher, which stated, "Punch card for three burritos or bowls and three drinks." The manager then came out and said he would honor the voucher, but quizzed me on how many meals I had left. I understand that I'm probably one of few who purchased this Groupon and that the crew rarely sees it, but there should have been far more oversight to how it would roll out. All in all, an embarrassing and uncomfortable experience, where I was treated like a burrito-snatching thief. If the restaurant stood alone without a crew, I would probably come back, but otherwise, give me my Chipotle!

Delicious. Huge servings. Beats the heck out of chain Burrito places. I got my punch card, and will be back, very soon.
(5)Dave D.
This was really great. Kind of like Chipotle -- you just go through and tell them everything you'd like in it. Props for a nice portion size of a "small burrito". Enough to fill a 200-lbs guy, but not so much that I felt gross. Food quality was good.
(4)Sam N.
A unique and delicious burrito - run by incredibly friendly staff and management. The special sauce and marinated chicken really make it different! This place definitely blows Chipotle out of the water and I might even say it's the best burrito I've had in Portland.
(5)C P.
I have lived across the street from here for the last 3 years. I went here 3 years ago and was so turned off by it that I did not return. I was finally hungry enough and lazy enough to give it one more try. To my surprise the place was so much better. Meat was well prepared and all the ingredients were fresh. So if you have sworn off this place, it could be time to give it another try.

Absolutely love going into Burrito Bar. Cute and caring servers try very hard to please customers in a well-lit, light-filled, well-decorated, friendly, family-owned atmosphere. It has the freshest vegetables from around the area, succulent pulled pork, rich shredded beef, spicy chicken, fresh mango and pineapple chunks, appetizing sauces and salsas, sour cream, freshly grated cheeses, and delicious guacamole (the latter free for vegetarians). Ingredients are cut, shredded, and prepared on the premises. All foods are fresh, clean, perfectly cooked and carefully prepared and supervised; nothing's burned or excessively spicy. Entrees are hearty and delicious, with gluten-free options, too. Servers listen attentively and are very responsive and eager to serve about any food sensitivities you might have and offer a variety of flavors and combinations of nachos, burritos, tacos, enchiladas, tostadas, quesadillas, burrito bowls, and daily specials. You can choose exactly which ingredients you wish and everything is made to order, fast and exactly to your satisfaction. Soft drinks on tap; bottles of water and juices, including beer, cool in the fridges. Outdoor seating is possible as well and everywhere is WiFi enabled (password: burritobar). My highest recommendation goes to Burrito Bar, where you can visit for a quiet, soothing, comfortable respite meal break replete with delicious, reasonably-priced food and drinks, and clean facilities, in a beautiful area of Portland. Well-priced meals can be wrapped and packaged to go from the site, delivered around the area, or catered for large parties with their popular catering business. A food cart truck is situated off-site as well, currently at the base of the cable car. This is a friendly place you can count on for reliability and return to again and again. Try Burrito Bar's authentic cuisine and fresh fare in a wide variety of tasty dishes. Only a block to Greyhound bus and train station in the Pearl District, parking nearby. Across the street from the Post Office at the corner of 9th & Hoyt in the Hoyt Apartments building near the new Pacific Northwest College of Art (PNCA). Open all day every day (except Sunday) from ten in the morning until eight at night.

After reading reviews and looking at the menu, I decided to give the burrito bar a shot. I was expecting decent Mexican food and I would say that's pretty much what I got. The food quality as a whole was just alright, and nothing felt super fresh either. But, that's about what I expected, so I wasn't disappointed. The one thing I will say is that their daily deals are nice. I ended up getting the nachos and a drink which were on special for less than the nachos themselves. All that being said though, I don't think I'll be returning any time soon considering how many other great options are around.
(3)Megan R.
Not the most exciting of food. Nachos are good, but I'll hit another place when craving a burrito.
(2)Paul C.
Tried this place just recently on a lunch break. I'm new to the area (Portland) and have been wanting (unsuccessfully) to try some good Mexican food that I can get if I'm unable to make it myself. As a Mexican, this isn't Mexican food. But that's ok, I understand the "Chipotle feel and style" of Mexican food and can appreciate it. Now, why the two stars? For starters, complete and utter confusion upon entering in it where the line starts and who is doing what. The service was fine, but the menu listings didn't specify the varieties of meat very clearly. Never was I made aware that the no-meat, vegetarian option was just fajita-stylist onions and bell peppers. In no place are bell peppers even remotely similar in price to meat. If you're not going to have a tofu option (this is Portland, so...wtf?), at least jam pack the veg option with something else like guacamole (à la Chipotle) to make the customer feel like their money is going as far as someone who chooses chicken or pork. Again, authenticity aside, the food was a bit bland given the standard assortment of components/toppings and considering I asked for hot salsa and jalapeños (bu that's probably just my preference). Price was ok given its location in the Pearl. The service, location, and ambiance are great. Likewise, if you eat meat and want gringo Mexican food, look no further.
(2)Jennifer L.
The service was fine - must not have been the grumpy people I read about in other reviews. I'd say the price point is a little high compared to more authentic places around town. For some reason sour cream must be a super hot commodity because they barely swipe any on. We got burritos. They were nothing special, but they were okay. If you like to build your own then this place is a plus in that regard. I sampled the chicken and really liked the BBQ style, but by the time you add everything else it really didn't make much difference. My friend was not impressed and thought everything was a little colder than it should be and pretty bland. I thought mine was okay, but I added guacamole, which did make a huge difference in flavor, although $1.50 seemed a bit much as an add-on. Basically it's just okay food.
(3)Thaddeus H.
Holy shit. Fantastic burrito salad. Great people. Locally owned. Awesome food. Get your ass in here.
(5)Carolyn B.
What a find this was! Great burritos and super nice people! Lucky find. Will remember this for future lunches. .
(4)Ben C.
This place used to be pretty awesome. It's as if Chipotle went to Hawaii. But recently they've slacked pretty badly. No beers on draft (they still sell them, just out), not all meats available, soap out in bathroom, drink case almost empty, and so on... It seems like the owner has either given up or just doesn't have the money left to stock properly--this is unfortunate since the burritos are amazing! Try and get yourself a burrito before this place goes out of business!!
(3)Andrew R.
The food is amazing, the only reason i'm not giving it 5 stars is because of the service. I come here fairly often however I have actually started coming later in the day to avoid one of the workers. Everyone is super friendly except for this grumpy old Mexican woman. I have NO idea how this woman has a job in customer service... she is always muttering things in Spanish under her breath, She rolls her eyes, she is rude to customers. I suggest you come after 3pm
(4)Michael B.
4 days into my trip to Portland and I hadn't gone to one place I didn't end up enjoying, that is until I got to Burrito Bar. Day 3 I saw Burrito Bar and remembered reading all the great reviews about it and I was excited to try a burrito with their sweet bbq sauce, especially since everyone says its similar to Chipotle. On Day 3 it was 7:30 at night, and they don't close till 8. I was standing out front with my girlfriend and we were discussing for a short time if we wanted to try it that night or wait, she said lets do it. As we turned around to enter, one of the guys that worked there.. locked the door. He saw us about to come in and he locked the door. Really......? So we were obviously upset and went to Hot Lips Pizza instead, and they were friendly and not shitty. Day 4 after coming back from a long adventure all across Portland, we passed by there again since it's just a few blocks from our hotel. We decided we'd give them one last chance. Got there at 4:30, all doors were locked and no one was to be seen inside... Really? We knew they were open cause their LED Open sign was on and once again they close at 8pm. We waited outside a few minutes while deciding where to go to eat instead. As we were talking, someone came and unlocked the door. Finally.. so since we were already there.. decided to give it a go, wish we didn't though. First off the guy that works there was the grumpiest most unwelcoming person ever. Like he was pissed off that we were there, like he had been trying to keep us out the entire time and we somehow slipped through his defenses. Asked the guy one question, which meat he thought would go best with the bbq sauce. His response, "I don't know boss, whatever you want." Really man? Like at least recommend me what people normally get with it or something. I've never been there, help me out. So I got my burrito, sweet and spicy chicken, refried beans, bbq sauce, lettuce, cilantro rice, and mangoes. It sounds amazing, but it wasn't even close to being decent. Beans looked like they'd be sitting there for years and the meat was super dry and tasteless. Was neither sweet nor spicy, so why go as far as advertising it as both???? I hate that people compare this place to Chipotle, it's not even close. Also the Caribbean influence? People say it's like if Chipotle was in Hawaii? What? The only reason I can think of why people say that is because they have mangoes on the menu. That's it. This place isn't even worth going to. If you want something like Chipotle, there is literally a Chipotle a few blocks away. There are also a lot of really nice local restaurants to try if you are a tourist, go elsewhere. Don't waste your money. Not worth the hype. 2 stars because the food was edible and I didn't get food poisoning as far as I know.
