I've been here twice so far. My boyfriend really likes the place since its both a bar and serves decent Vietnamese food. We've tried the bo luc lac, fish sauce marinated fried chicken wings, and the chicken porridge/congee. The food has been pretty good overall. The bo luc lac is really tender and it comes with salt and pepper with a wedge of lime for you to make the dipping sauce which I found to be an interesting addition. Although, the chicken wings aren't the best I've had, they are made super crunchy and is something I would definitely order again. The congee here is actually pretty decent as well. Overall, a solid three star place for Viet food. Bonus points since they open late as they are a bar as well.

This is one of my only 5 star reviews. Usually, I only give five star reviews to five star restaurants. However, The Bluefin Bar and Grill not only excels in the food quality department; it is some of the best Vietnamese food I've ever eaten. I come from San Jose, CA and we have the largest Vietnamese population in the US. So, I've eaten at more than a few good places. Okay, okay, I've never been to Ho Chi Minh city but my Vietnamese friends have taken me to a lot of good places. Let me tell you what makes this place shine. Here's the story: My coworker and I were working till the wee hours on a Tuesday night. We finished early and I was really in the mood for something other than sloppy diner food. I pulled up the Yelp app. and found Bluefin. Once I read the reviews and saw the pictures of the food, I knew it had to be good. Since it was raining and we had to drive 16 miles into Portland proper, I called ahead. The wonderful lady running the bar said she would stay open for us; and she did! The food at Bluefin is absolutely outstanding. I had several dishes but the Pho is fantastic. Big-time flavor comes from the use of bones to make the broth and they drop a big, meaty ox-tail portion right in the middle of your bowl. My friend had fried rice, which he shared with me and that was also good. Everything is obviously prepared in a home-made style. I was so happy with their food that I made a second trip back after eating dinner down the street at Cabezon (which I would also recommend) I ordered the fried chicken wings with a light honey and chili sauce. POW! Chalk up another 10 on the scoreboard. The wings were crispy outside, tender and juicy inside and the sauce was so light that you could taste the chicken through the sweet/hot glaze. Keep in mind, I'm eating these wings after having a full meal already and they were dynamite! How is it I'm not 400lbs? In addition to all of that good stuff, the woman who runs the bar is very helpful and friendly. I'll tell you this, the food is worth a special trip and its worth putting up with the karaoke bar ambiance. Put Bluefin on your list immediately.

Good atmosphere. Full menu available at all times. Full bar. Average number of tables. The food is excellent. All around good spot with the added bonus of being open way past midnight!

The food is really fresh here and the service is great. The spring rolls are the best I have had in Portland and their meat is always cooked perfectly. Really great food here!

I'll have to come back to give it a more thorough review, but the drinks at the bar were cheap, the service was good, and the Vietnamese karaoke was loud and fun to listen to (complete with old school videos on the projection screen). It wasn't crowded on a Saturday night, and they stay open late. The TV's behind the bar showed ESPN and NBATV, so that was cool. I only had the fried chicken/fries appetizer (#1 on the menu) so I don't think I can really rate the food yet. I like places like this that aren't too popular...they remind me of the little hole in the wall joints you can find in LA.

Needed a late night meal coming home from the airport and yelped this place. Walked into a COMPLETELY empty restaurant on a Wednesday night. Nonetheless, we trusted the 5 star reviews. Did not dissapoint! We had the Beef Luc Lac, Pork & Shrimp spring rolls, and Vermicelli noodle bowl with pork. All were awesome. Larger portions than I've ever seen at a Vietnemese restaurant, fair prices. I don't know why this place was empty. We will be back.

Two words. Expectations exceeded! The place doesn't look like much. Beer and lottery signs in the windows. Undressed tables. A horribly mounted projector on the ceiling and a stupid-large PA system against the wall. OK...this is a Karaoke place. But...the magic at Bluefin isn't on display the dining room. It's in the kitchen! Pho was some of the best I've had, chock-full of tender beef, meatballs with just a touch of sweetness, and still-on-the-bone oxtail. The broth was beautiful and the garnishes were plentiful. For those of you that don't like "odd-bit" proteins in traditional pho (tendon, tripe, etc), this is your pho...pho-sho. All the taste, and none of the collagen or cartilage. And the serving size was ginormous. However, it was the Bo Tai Chanh that stole the show. It was perhaps the finest Vietnamese dish I've ever eaten. I would have devoured every bit of it except for the bowlasaurous rex of pho that I was committed to finishing. So it's Bo Tai Chanh for breakfast. Yay, me!! Any negatives, you ask? Service was attentive but unobtrusive. Water was cold, and ice tasted like ice. Seems they had a full bar. Perhaps I could have done without some of the hip-hop music and the young asian-gangster types at the table behind me getting drunk and talking smack to each other. But once my food showed up, I noticed nothing but the magic in my bowl and on my plates.

The food at Bluefin is five stars easily. Been here twice now and got the cooked shrimp, and the pork/tofu/shrimp rice dish. Both were amazing. The strange part is the atmosphere. It looks like a late night karaoke sports bar. And the music selection is pretty awful in my opinion, everything autotuned Rihanna, Kanye, wannabe gangster and commercial at the same time, I can't stand that stuff. They should take their killer food and open up a real restaurant. That place would be packed. But I will be back to Bluefin soon enough, to try more dishes.

Really easy spot to drive by and miss, but make sure you don't. This place is delicious! I love their fish sauce carmelized wings, the salt and pepper shrimp (ask for it peeled and dip it into lime and pepper), bo luc lac (the best in town, so tender and divine). Those are my fave dishes but everything I've eaten from here is sooooo yummy. I want to try so much more on their menu too. Yes, there's loud Vietnamese karaoke sometimes but it's all worth it for the amazing food. Prices are a little spendier than most Vietnamese places, but again, the food is worth it. The owners are really nice and talented cooks!!! Gosh I can't wait to go back! Everyone we bring here is wow'ed by the food as well.

The Spring Rolls (wrapped with rice paper) were excellent. However, I was disappointed at the Goat Curry. The meat had too much skin/tendon attached to it, which made it very difficult to chew. The curry flavoring was great though.

I'm mad that I've lived next to this place for the past year and a half and I choose a week before I move across the country to come in here. Bò Lúc Lac was as good as everyone on here has raved. Haven't eaten all day until now so I ordered the Dê Xá Lan to go. Will come back at least once before I leave.

I have been to this quirky little establishment twice. Each time, my WTF moment lasts for a few days -- to be more specific, I am all like, WTF?!! That place has the most insanely delicious food around! I am serious people. If you can suspend judgement of the decor, and let the atmosphere and the soundtrack add to the adventure, you will have a transcendental dining experience. So far, I've sampled the wings (good lord) and the veal, the quail - best quail I've had at ANY restaurant in the US, and the pork belly shrimp dish is just silly crazy delicious. I am not sure who is running that kitchen, but they are on par with even the most high end establishments in town. The menu is comprised of some serious legitimate Vietnamese delights - you will not see these offerings at every other Vietnamese place in town. Give Bluefin some love, and trust me - it will be returned 10-fold.

First thing first. I have been to a ridiculous amount of vietnamese restaurants. My family cooks vietnamese food everyday and for EVERY. SINGLE. OCCASION. we always eat out at some Vietnamese or Chinese restaurants. This place, by far, is one of the best viet restaurants I have ever been to. I came here with a large party and they were able to accommodate us. We ordered goi (basically a salad), bo luc lac (beef) , quail, shrimp, and calamari. The goi was just as good as how my family makes it. The bo luc lac was sooooo juicy and tender. I was so surprised. The quail was seasoned perfectly with the right amount of sweetness. The calamari was super crispy and peppery. Overall, I LOVE this place. It's definitely a hole in the wall but you have to try this place out!

Yep. I used Yelp to decide where we were going to eat tonight. "5 STARS" it said...and 5 stars it was. We had the roasted quail, bo luc lac, and our roommate had an egg, beef (?), and shrimp with a sort of sweet and sour-ish dipping sauce. We were all three very pleased. The server even made the altered blueberry-Long Island I asked for...and it was great. Will we be back? You can bet your bo luc lac we will.

Great Authentic Vietnamese Food & drinks! My love for clubbing has died along with my stamina so now i have to resorts to going to bars where i can hang up my dancing shoes and just chill. I enjoy going to places where i can socialize, reminisce, be surrounded by friends, listen to terrible karaoke and eat amazing food while washing it down with some yummy alcoholic drinks. If you are looking for a place like this, you seriously need to check out this place. However, be forewarn that on the weekend its full with Asians, but on the weekdays its a mixed group. The ambiance of the place is clean and trendy. They have flat screen TVs everywhere and even some strobe/laser lights. Oh, and the bathroom is pretty darn clean for a bar. It's definitely not a dive bar so don't treat it as one. This place got some awesome beer drinking food and all of their dishes are straight authentic Vietnamese. You won't find any sweet & sour or mandarin beef here, its all Vietnamese food and that's what i like! You can find Bo Luc Lac (Fillet Mignon Cube Steaks), Chicken Wings Sauteed in Fish Sauce, Pho, Hot Pots, Chim Cut Ro Ti (Quail) & etc...all the dishes i just stated is DELICIOUS! I would recommend you ordering a few of these dishes if you go here. The bartenders there makes some amazing drinks. Their specialty is Kumquat Mojito (limited time only), Martinis (watermelon flavor is bomb) and I especially like their Lemon drops. They're pretty generous with their alcohol and the service is quick and fast. Check this place out if you need a late night meal and you're looking for authentic Vietnamese food. The service is excellent and the price is very reasonable. Just don't be shocked if someone starts doing karaoke, there's always someone out there thinking they're the next Bon Jovi or Whitney Houston. =) After awhile, they'll actually play real music.

If you don't mind the diversity of people & bad/good karaoke skill, this is the place. Love the friendly people & great authentic vietnamese bar food!

What a delightful little place. The food was beautiful and perfectly cooked. We might not have stopped, just from driving by, but certainly glad that we did.

For better or worse, after moving to the NE this (in addition to Smallwares) is my new late-nite food option. How I miss the late-nite noodles from Du Kuh Bee! The food here is equally intriguing (and equally expensive). What I have been served here so far, has been really good: Yellow chicken curry: Very meaty not too many veggies. Very Very heavy on the ginger. Must like ginger! Bo Luc Lac (Fillet Mignon Cube Steaks): Melt in your mouth tender! Served on a bed of lettuce, tomato and onion which seems a little odd to me but the steak was freaking amazing. Chim Cut Ro Ti (Fried Quail Halves): I kinda felt bad eating the cute little things but they tasted so good (What is in that seasoning?!). A great beer drinking dish as it is a task in itself to eat the things, kind of like chicken wings or peel and eat shrimp. WARNING WARNING WARNING If you plan on dining in you MUST HAVE A TOLERANCE FOR KARAOKE AND AMERICAN POP MUSIC I can get into just about any scene, but the Asian karaoke thing is just kind of lost on me. I am only writing this to warn those who may come looking for the yum yum Vietnamese bar food and not expect the in-your-face karaoke. I'm not criticizing, I'm just advising those who may not be that into the 10-minute Vietnamese love-ballads or the latest American Teen POP sensation. It really is a little over-the-top, and I'm sure that there are those that LOVE it, I'm just not one of them. I WILL, however, tolerate it. Just bring me some more of that fried quail!
