We used to go to Jarra's every time we came to town, and have tried a few of the other Ethiopian restaurants over the years but none were worth going back. A Yelp search yielded Aberus and we decided to give it a try. This place is a hidden gem. Tucked in a mini-mall on NE Killingsworth , the place is very clean, but with minimal decor. The service is friendly and warm, but you may have to wait sometimes as there is only one waitress. The food is delicious. Full of flavor and cooked perfectly. The injera is so good, you have to resist eating too much and filling up too quickly! We ordered a combo platter that gave you small portions of 9 different meals. It would easily have fed us both, but the hubby also got a separate order of the Doro Wat, which we ended up taking most of home with us. The place wasn't very busy, which is a shame because the food is five stars and beyond. Do yourself a favor and check Aberus out - you won't be disappointed!

Yep, yep, yep... This is the joint for sure! ! ! I know that everyone thinks they know Ethiopian food but I promise you this is one area I am an expertise. The reason being is that I actually know how to cook the food better than most restaurants in Portland! I was immersed in this ancient culture by marriage and understands how deep their food traditions run and not everyone knows how to burn the Berbere pepper, make the ibe cheese or to wash the chicken with salt and lemon before you cook. This place is phenomenal and I will say it over and over again. You must try their food, forget about the other spots you are all use to in Ptown . I guarantee this place has got them beat hands down ..... Tonight we had the Kay wot and it was so flavorful and didn't leave a burning belching sensation in my gut( that's how you can't tell if they cooked the pepper long enough )and then the lamb tips are off the chain. Cooked to perfection I tell you. Now they do not have gluten free injera "yet" but is coming soon. I told them it will inhabit what they all ready have going on! Yummmmm

Best Ethiopian I've had in Portland. Tender, mildly sour injera, good selection of meat and vegan dishes. I'm fond of the Misir and Kikalicha Wot. Yum! Don't go if you require lightning fast American style table service, this is more like hanging out at your Ethiopian friend's house.

Some of the best beef I've had at Ethiopian places. Both beef dishes had very different flavors. The chicken was falling-off-the-bone well cooked. Tried Ethiopian wine for the first time. Inter sting to say the least. Tastes a lot like grape juice (the non-fermented kind). Will definitely try again.

What more can say that hasn't already. They do it right. The food is prepared correctly and deliciously. Be sure to bring friend and get your dishes to share on a family sized platter. Just. Yum.

Went to NE PDX to visit another Ethiopian restaurant which just so happened to be closed. I googled what was around us and found Aberus with great reviews here on Yelp. Best accidental idea ever ;) The ladies in the kitchen were amazing, they were patient with myself and my family (there were 7 of us total) as we were first timers and had no idea how to begin eating the delicious food they placed before us. Definitely going back again!!

Word appears to be getting out that this is the best Ethiopian food in town. We vectored in friends who have been to almost all of the Ethiopian places in town (and beyond) they drove across town and declared it the best they've had. I'll be bummed when we have to wait in line someday soon. We order Aberus and Vegetable combinations together. What a meal. The St George lager from Adis Abiba is a nice pairing. Our son who loves mac and cheese balked and we laughed and laughed . . . more for us. Family owned and operated. We have never not seen the owner's daughters holding down a table, doing their homework.

Really good and quite cuisine-specific. I was too much of a wuss to try the raw beef; although it looks like it could be pretty dang good. The injera is perfectly made to wrap all food items with no need for utensils. Totally great. Staff seems straight outta Africa. Nice people.

We really loved the food - Ethiopean food is almost always good, but the restaurants in Portland are always just too hot. Here, we got some heat but at a lower level and you could really taste the food. We both ordered the largest combo, which is described as the beef combo plus vegi combo plus Doro wat, and it arrived on one humongous platter. Every single item was exquisite, but the chicken (doro wat) stood out. The decor is basic, good value for dinner.

I came in here yesterday with a bunch of people..they made things super complicated but surely the ladies here did their very best to accommodate. They were fast, sweet, helpful, and the food, delicious!

As good as it gets!!!! Loved the food and the women who sold me my meal. They took the time to explain the basket table and how they would normally serve the food on this in their country. Also told me when you say Doro-wot it is pronounced "ot" not what. I appreciate being competent in the cultural dishes I enjoy as much as I appreciate their deliciousness. :) I wasn't expecting to spend as much as I did but the food was as high quality as the other places in town. Dishes were priced between $9-16 and the food amount was substantial enough to warrant the price. I got at least two meals out of one $13 dish. And it was yummy! Will be returning to this establishment often.

Came by yesterday and I gotta say, every bite reminds of my mother's cooking.

I'm a big Ethiopian food fan and love the differences between restaurants in town; this place is wonderful! Soft, lovely enjera, subtle as well as intense flavor blends, many options, and the folks who run it are the best!

I am not an expert on Ethiopian food, but I love this little spot, and the food is so good! We ordered a dish that included beef three ways, and all were so flavorful. My daughter ordered a dish with lentils and veggies, also wonderful. The owner is so kind, too. Recommended.

The positive reviews below are right. Best injera I've had in Portland, more flavor. The lentil dish also was a standout for flavor and a bargain at $9. Service great, parking next door.

I enjoyed it a lot. I had never had Ethiopian food and had no idea what to expect. The atmosphere was lovely, they were busy when we got there and despite them only seeming to have one person working, our food arrived in a timely fashion. I accidentally made the mistake of leaving my leftovers. I will have to just go back again

Excellent ethiopian cuisine! Although they are known for their excellent Kitfo dishes they also serve plenty of vegan dishes that are just as delicious! I highly recommend this place.

This was my first time at Aberus, and it was amazing! We had the vegetarian combination platter, and then added a spicy lamb dish, (Awaze) and some herb-rubbed chicken, that was falling off the bone. The woman working was wonderfully helpful, and very kind. Our meal came out quickly, which was good because my husband was a little on the "hangry" side when we got there. We will return.

Pretty good! We got the veggie combo and really enjoy it. The red and yellow lentil dishes were both dyno-mite! The cabbage and salad were so-so. The potatoes and carrots were nothing but filler. Would've liked a little more flavor there. The Ethiopian coffee was powerfully thick. Prices range around $9-$13. Solid spot, though we still prefer our favorite place down in L.A.

I have never posted a review on Yelp before but I just had to for this place. WOW! My husband and I stopped in spontaneously on our way somewhere else. We've been looking for a good Ethiopian restaurant and were intrigued to find one in a random strip mall near our home. I cannot emphasize enough how delicious everything was! We got the Aberus Combination and Vegetable Combination meals to share. They came out together on a huge platter with lots of amazing injera. SO good. Just the right amount of spice so as not to overpower all the incredible flavors. What an incredible variety of items! It's like the best Christmas gift ever finding this place. Do NOT judge this book by it's cover. If you have never tried Ethiopian food before, now is the time and this is the place. If you have, and you love it, this place will rival your favorite spot. I am sold and will return often. Happy!!

Great new Ethiopian restaurant in the neighborhood. I've waited a few months to check it out and regret that I could have been enjoying great, cheap Ethiopian food so close to my house! They were so friendly and nice. I got the veggie platter which came with salad, potato & carrot dish, split pea, red lentil, and purée digs all had good flavor and texture. It came with a large role of injera. The salad was perfectly dressed and it was all delicious for just $11. My friend got a beef dish and an Ethiopian beer that a was tasty ( I tried a sip). I'll be back as a regular. Really excited to support this business!

As good as it gets is true --The women do authentic cooking - My favorite Dish is the Gomme Begadi Fantastic --

A wonderful place! I was debating between 4 and 5 stars because the prices are a little wonky ($13 for doro-wot with absolutely no side dishes is a little steep when you can get an amazing combo meal with beef, chicken and veggies for $16) but there are a lot more good things going for this little place. First: although the restaurant is really ugly on the outside, it is super clean and completely acceptable on the inside. Second: the food is straightforward. The simple menu allows you to enjoy the cuisine and really taste what's going on in each preparation. Third: the ladies who work there are delightful and they seem to genuinely care that you are happy with your meal. These three points make this place a solid choice for Ethiopian food in Portland.

Amazing! So good! I went there for the first time last week and I am surprised to see there aren't more reviews of this restaurant. I got the vegetable combo platter--each dish was so flavorful. Also, they had bottle beers available, which complimented my dinner well. The atmosphere is friendly and comfortable. I'll definitely be returning!
