On our way to Newport this past Saturday, my family and I stopped in the CD&J Cafe in Philomath. We have gone by this place for Years and thought it might be a great place to get breakfast/lunch. We went in, sat down and when the waitress came over, my husband asked if they were still serving breakfast. The waitress said they served breakfast all day since they were only open until 3. So with that, my husband ordered the B&G with a side of bacon and sausage. Would you believe...they were out of gravy!! How do you run out of gravy if you are Making sausage or bacon ??!! They were also out of wheat toast...so he ordered the Denver omelet. The omelet was nothing to write home about. I ordered a basic turkey sandwich, one daughter ordered the hamburger special and the other daughter ordered a garden burger. Both burgers were okay, but lets talk about the "turkey" sandwich... I'm pretty sure the sandwich was made first because the bread was wet & soggy and smothered in Way too much mayo. If that wasn't enough to turn my stomach, the turkey was Not turkey! It was some sort of processed meat with an incredibly "spongy" texture. I was not able to get past the 2nd bite and I believe I may have offended the waitress when she asked if I was finished, the answer was yes and no, I do not need a to go box!

I stop here every time we go to Newport. This place is amazing for what it is. Podunk greasy spoon with classic diner fare, chipped tables, torn seats, mismatched plates, and breakfast until closing. One diner noted that they run out of gravy, which is true, since they close at 3, and they make it every morning. All the more reason to show up early. My favorite is the weekday special; $6 for an American breakfast before 11. If you get there early enough, you can see tables of old-timers in Dickeys and suspenders shooting the breeze, talking about the war and how gas is too expensive. These kinds of places won't be around in the future, so enjoy it while you can :)

This is a great breakfast spot, the biscuits and gravy were very good and the bacon lives up to their sign. Not fancy but a great breakfast and friendly service.

I like my diners unpretentious, and when we stopped here for breakfast today, that's what we got. If I want thought-out decor or heirloom potatoes I will go somewhere else (like Gathering Together, for instance). The sole waitress was a bit harried, serving a largish crowd of regulars, but very genuine and friendly. Our food was well prepared -- I can never get my hash browns that crispy -- and while I would have been satisfied with basic diner offerings, I was happy to find the biscuits and gravy are homemade, and they use actual cheddar cheese in the omelets. In remarking on this, I found that the waitress shared my disdain for processed American "cheese". We failed to try the advertised "best bacon around", so we will be back. Bonus: they have a good selection of hot sauce, even the elusive habanero Tabasco sauce.

I came to this place in hopes that it would be great. I ordered some coffee, and I noticed that it was weak, but it was after noon, and most diners have weak coffee. Then I planned on ordering blueberry pancakes, but they only had enough pancake batter to make my stepdad's "pancake sandwich," so I resorted to getting French toast. My breakfast was good. The French toast was satisfactory, and I enjoyed it. But my mom and stepdad were not as pleased. My mom's said her's was alright, though the portion was large. My stepdad's pancakes were apparently somewhat tough, though. I also have to compliment the waitress. She was pretty much running the entire place on her own, and doing a good job, too. I was definitely impressed with her. She handled orders, serving, and refilling the coffee regularly. This place is good if you want a decent diner breakfast, but my advice is not to expect too much. The pricing is a little more expensive than you'd want to pay for a diner breakfast, but it isn't horrible.
