Once upon a time we took a trip to Newport, OR and decided to stay over night, but we did not want to spend much money at all and wanted to find the cheapest room we could find. And then we found this place with rooms for $30 a night at the time (and unless some drastic changes have been made, the price really should not be much higher now a few years later). It was kind of scary with a view of a creepy alley out of the window, an interior that had not been updated since about 1971, and the room was dingy and smelled like stale smoke. We opened the door to the bathroom to find an equally dingy area with a kind of yucky looking shower. And then there was another door. A door leading to another room. A room just like the one we'd left before going on this little tour through the bathroom. Something about it creeped us out, and we decided that either there was a ghost in that room or that something unspeakable had occurred in there, so we quickly shut the door and avoided going near that room entirely and made jokes about it. One star is because it was probably actually perfectly safe and did serve our purpose by being a cheap last minute room for the night. The other star is for the years of enjoyment we have had thinking back on just how strange that place was and how silly it was being so freaked out by a spare room. I've actually stayed in worse places (well, maybe not in the US, now that I think about it), and I would stay here again if I was really broke but wanted to stay at the coast, but this place is not for anyone with a taste for the finer things in life like luxury accommodation.
