My family visited Subterra on our last night of vacation in Oregon. I have to say, it was by far my favorite restaurant that we went to. The atmosphere was cozy, laid-back, unpretentious, and pleasant. We were immediately greeted and seated in a back table. Our waiter was very friendly and extremely knowledgeable about the menu and wine list. He even went as far as to tell us what was in the black bean soup (which was excellent) so we could make it at home. I had the black bean soup and the scallops with brussel sprout slaw. The scallops were DELICIOUS. They were very large and juicy, and seasoned very well. I also loved the brussel sprout slaw that it came with. Even the bread was good! I would highly recommend this restaurant to people looking to eat some good food, chill out, and enjoy a glass of wine. I was very impressed with this restaurant.

Awesome!! True 5 course meal. Food outstanding. Service great. Great setting and ambiance! Stopped back for happy hour next day. A definite must stop. I had the Lamb Chops, cooked to perfection, med rare, expect them red cause that's how they should be. Try the Sub Tini and the Moscow Mule for your cocktails if your wined out.

This is a terrific restaurant with interesting menu of delicious food. Have tried many items on their menu and have liked them all. The setting is charming and the service is top notch

I've been to Subterra twice--once for dinner, and once for a meeting where we enjoyed some appetizers. Service is fairly prompt. The menu is easy to navigate, and the options are solid. I really enjoyed the fish tacos and have to say, the adult mac 'n' cheese was phenomenal. A pasta dish I had as an entrée on my first visit was slightly underwhelming, but I think it was just due to the actual dish being different than what I expected. A nice wine list featuring good local producers. The atmosphere is very relaxing, and this would make a great place for a date. Will definitely go back.

Have been eating here since it opened. Great food, Black Bean Soup, Short Ribs, Newberger and Fish Tacos will knock you out. Nice wine selection, friendly staff. Always a pleasure. And NOW, the have a full bar and know the proper way to make a good cocktail!
(5)Susan M.
I've now eaten at Subterra four times and the food has always been good, fresh and hot when it arrived. The service is excellent. This is a great place for lunch or dinner. The mac and cheese is wonderful

Wow- I was impressed! What I love about Subterra is how unassuming it is. The interior has an interesting feel- a large, strangely shaped space that is partially underground so it feels like a wine cellar. But they have done a good job of opening it up and making it feel bright and airy with the decorating. Shelves filled with wine line the walls and flimsy drapery separate the tables around the perimeter. It would be nice for them to get a few booths, but that is just my personal preference. When we arrived it took the waiter a few minutes to get to us to get us seated, but he was alone and already had a 4 top and 6 top so it was fine. Perhaps we should have made reservations so they knew to expect us? My pre-dinner cocktail was made with flat tonic, for which the waiter apaologized and gave it to me on the house. At least he warned me! I probably would have just thought it was watered down from the ice if he hadn't said anything. My sister ordered us some oysters to start out the meal. The marionberry mignonette was a very nice accompaniment, but the dice on the shallots was bit large for my taste. I like them to be extremely small- nearly a puree. Again, just my crazy personal taste and nothing to hold against the chef. Lovely oysters- very fresh. Each entree was served with a soup and salad course preceding it. Nice little package deal. I ordered the Cuban black bean soup which had a spicy kick to it. Pretty tasty, but nothing to write home about. The salad course was little over the top. The salad had endive, arugala, hazelnuts, beets, goat cheese, oranges, grapefruits, and dressing on it. It just seemed like too much going on. I do not lke endive in a salad anyway so I didn't eat that part. For my entree I got the scallops and they were fantastic. They were served over a brussel sprout slaw with some kind of bacon or something mixed in with it. Oh goodness! The scallops themselves were cooked the right amount, but it seemed like they may have cooked a little long on one side before getting turned because one side was much darker than the other. But they were tender and fresh so not to worry. I tried my sisters pork and it was delicious as well- falling apart with a really great mustard sauce. Almost reminiscent of my beloved carolina mustard based barbeque sauce- but much more refined. The guys both got the adult mac and cheese which I tried a sample of as well. Scrumptious! I am sure it is the most popular item on the menu. With dinner we had a bottle of the four graces pinot blanc which, as the server said it would, went perfectly with all of our dishes. Although the service was a little slow at the beginning of the meal, he was very attentive and knowledgable. AND since it was my birthday they gave me a free dessert! Who does that anymore? And let me say, the bananas foster was one of the best I have had- really really good! I can't wait to try this place for lunch sometime! And I will be back for dinner soon as well. I think this may be my new local fave!!

This was subterra-ble. My group was a party of four, and all our entrees were not great. The tomato soup tasted store bought, and the bean soup was too salty. The house salad, consisting of arugula, two endives, two slices of grapefruit, and a beet were an odd combination in flavor and texture. The goat cheese and its watery remnants couldn't have even saved the salad. The entrees weren't much better. The pork shoulder was overcooked and drenched in an uncomplimentary mixture of a creamy sweet and salty sauce that included capers and leeks. The steak shoulder was cooked correctly, but the sauce was watered-down and bland. The zarzuela was highly disappointing. This Spanish inspired dish is suppose to be rich in texture with flavors and spices, but it was watery and tasted more like a bad cioppino. The dish also didn't have any sausage in it, despite listing it as an ingredient. The halibut was cooked right, but the sauce was a little too sweet. The restaurant's sommelier suggested two different wines that got mixed reactions among the group. The only good food we all enjoy was the brie with fig and hazelnut topping. The waitress was also very friendly and helpful, despite there being only two waitresses for the restaurant on a busy Saturday night. Overall, it was an extremely disappointing meal.

Went here for lunch on our way into town. Great ambiance and drink/wine/beer list. I had the fish tacos which were very flavorful. My husband had the "Newburger" which was probably the best burger we have ever tasted. Everything we had was super fresh and tasted like it came straight from the garden. Wish we could have gone back for dinner!
(4)Timothy R.
We did a very nice group dinner on 12/14 and found the food delightful and the owners very welcoming. Highly recommended

My family and I loved this place when we went for dinner a few nights ago on a family vacation. We are all foodies, and love to eat good quality food so we tried many of the "fine dining" experiences that Newberg had to offer. Subterra stood out because the quality of the food spoke for itself without a pretentious waitstaff and ambience. This is a place to come with family or a date and enjoy good food, quality service, and a value. Our entrees all came with soup and salad, but were still only around 25 dollars each. The waiter was so nice. We asked him about the famous black bean soup, and he went back to the kitchen to find out all of the ingredients so we could try to make it at home. I was surprised that this place was not more crowded. I thought that the food was great, and you get a great experience for your money here.

I took my mom here for her birthday for lunch - however I chose to go because I saw the menu online which turned out to be the dinner menu... but BONUS for them, they made an exception and let me order off the dinner menu at lunch time and I had the opportunity to order what caught my eye online, the avocado chicken dish which was AMAZING! The service and atmosphere tipped me over to 5 stars, otherwise it would have been four. Rewind to the starters, the "Melted Brie with Maple Bourbon Fig Jam" - to die for and "Edamame Hummus" which was a good spread but the bread was burnt a bit. My mom ordered a fresh salad which needed more dressing and could do without the grapefruit which makes it too sour - should be replaced with sliced peaches or pears - just our preference. Pricing was fair for wine and food. Loved that the menu was unique and changed with the seasons. We will go back again and look forward to it.
(5)Dana Z.
We went there for my birthday and mother's day so I was hoping that we would enjoy ourselves. We DID! I am a very picky foodie that eats out a lot and was very impressed by the whole meal. The service was wonderful, the atmosphere terrific and the food divine. We had a fantastic time there and I highly recommend it to anyone. Oh and one big caveat, it was super reasonable. Lovely. Go treat yourself when in Newberg.

Yay!! On a business trip to Newberg, my friends and I stopped in to eat some yummy food. We started with the Black Bean Soup, which was super delish!!Then, on to the salad! Hazelnuts, blueberries!!! How can anyone resist? Finally, I ended up having the Sweet Potato Angliotti, which was hand made! I would totally recommend this place. If you are in a hurry, forget about it. We loved being there for a while, but some people may not like it! Very gourmet for a great price!!!
(5)Ajay J.
Went there on Sunday on our way out of Dundee. Very nice decor in a underground setting. Items on the brunch menu came with fruit crumble and a pastry. Had the heuvo rancheros which were excellent. Also had "bottomless" belinnis. Would go back for dinner.
(4)Angela R.

Great food, service & setting @ great price. My fav place to eat
(4)Sarah M.
A stellar find in Newberg. My husband and I tried it on Friday night and were blown away by the quality of the food at reasonable prices. Every dish was well prepared and well seasoned. The atmosphere of this basement restaurant is intimate and serene. The service was attentive and friendly. It is a nice place to enjoy a great meal. We'll be back!

So I just opened this account to write my review about SubTerra because I was so disapointed. I actually am not a picky eater and like most places I eat, when I don't like something I usually put it to the side and try something different the next time or simply don't return. I was so apolled by the service, mostly the reaction of the Chef. Our waitress was wonderful and we felt so bad for putting her in a bad place, it was not her fault. But the Chef never offered to come discuss this with us, but made her do all the back and forth until we requested to talk with him. It was busy in there, but again it is a Saturday night most restaurants prepare for that. We did make reservations for that evening, but were a few minutes early, we were happy to wait until our table was ready no big deal. The response that they offered to fix or remake our steaks is a lie, the only thing they offered was banana's foster. We did ask to take the steaks home, but he had already thrown them out. Never did he offer to fix them. The fact that you are so upset that we used a gift card and an expired meal voucher that you sent us for the poor service we got last memorial day weekend when we were there is a little silly. See the response from Stacy L. below referring to that weekend and here we just planned on not going back until we got the voucher and gift card, thought that would be a safe way to try it again, and to no surprise it was another disapointment. Just to clairify I am not sure where you get 99% of your customers love you, your percentage on yelp is actually 72%

I am a local winery owner. We had dinner their last night. Wow. What a meal. The service was great. The food was incredible. The owner Janet said that her Creme brulee was very good. It was more than that. Reasonably priced menu Great wine list. Thanks for the wonderful evening.
(5)Jimmy H.
Subterra fills a long-empty gap in the restaurant scene in Newberg, providing great fresh seasonal food, prepared thoughtfully and creatively, at a really reasonable price. All of their entrees are under $21, and come with soup and salad. They also have some really excellent small plates, and a wine list that is superb. And it's a pleasant space as well, with really warm but efficient service. Easily our favorite place in the Newberg area. Need to try their Sunday Brunch menu next!
(5)Steph C.
the menu, food quality, presentation and choices of menu.the ambience of underground wine cellar and layback lounge decor, we were so surpsied no one found them! as we from LA thought we found treasure here. we are very spoiled of LA michellin stars restaurant, this is one place has something special. this is one place BF and me loved of our pinot noir adventure, we were hungry and tired after a day search for good wine, we ended up in this place, the food was exceptionally good! cheese and dates apps, tuna tar tar apps, they ran out of lamb that day. we happened to have just found the wine of their upstairs, and decide to go down unwind drink our wine , lucky we found this good food. this is one memorable meal and wine we had. this was memory of a year ago, glad they're still around. btw, medici and ferraro 03 05 reds are all good choice, not that their wine list doesn't do, we were just in love with this place! great memory of our oregon trip.
(4)Zak G.
Oh my... This is a wonderful place in Oregon wine country. We rode the motorcycle across the beautiful landscape and stopped here for lunch. The crispy pork belly is INSANE. Also had the special heirloom tomato salad which was so fresh and yummy, as well as the turkey sandwich - one of the best o have ever had. The beef stew was also truly amazing. Everything is made from scratch and the ingredients are super fresh. They also have an amazing wine selection (duh). Please try this place, you won't regret it!
(5)D'Ann B.
I visited Subterra as part of a family reunion. I was really looking forward to it. It was good - especially the curried tomato soup - but it wasn't great. I had a variation of a seafood stew that was really under seasoned. Another member of the group said the same about it as well. While I can't say it was an unpleasant experience, it wasn't as memorable as I'd hoped.
(4)D S.
Never had a bad meal here, a person can't go wrong grabbing a bite after a good day of wine tasting. Finish your day with some scratch cooking in a good atmosphere.
(4)Isadoro M.
This is over the top great. In the basement space of a little strip mall (Subterra, subterranean) accessed by a little winding staircase. No windows, but the food is so good you forget about that. Large wine list, fun cocktails, but the food is the kickass surprise. Entrees come with soup and salad (both of which are terrific, freshly made, not off the shelf), so with the really tasty bread basket you're close to full before an entree appears. But our food was so good. Braised short rib was fall apart delicious, on garlicky, fresh crunchy braised spinach with a polenta cake. The zarzuela was phenomenal, great broth, lots of clams, shrimp, scallops and meaty fish. Both dishes were quite large, so you'd have trouble finishing them if they weren't so compellingly tasty good. At $29 per, a real bargain. Overall advice, get in here now.
(5)Jacqueline M.
A very nice restaurant with great food and service!
(4)Angela H.
Not disappointed. Very good dining options reasonably priced. I enjoyed the small plate options and we shared an entree. Risotto was cooked perfectly, able to taste the fresh herbs. The halibut was fantastic. Staff was polite but very subdued. Unassuming space on the outside but great dining experience inside.
(4)Eric R.
Wow this was perfectly lovely... Or loverly perfect! Soft, classy ambiance with white linens and very professional up-stat servers. But don't get me wrong, we were in jeans without a reservation and were welcomed graciously. We had the scallops with lentil chorizo and potato - wrapped halibut. Both were heavenly. And this followed a bread basket, scrumptious black bean soup and simple but wonderful house salad. We sipped a very nice, smooth reisling all the while.
(5)Doug W.
Interesting decor, I was a bit thrown off by the odd ikea lighting decor. Looks cheap. Our Food was not hot when it was served, once it was served. We had a long wait till food arrived. It came out luke warm. The service could be better. We kept getting new serving people, made it a bit confusing, we were asked twice for drink orders & again for our meal. I had heard good things about this place. I say skip this one. Needs improving!
(2)Marcia M.
Wow. We found this restaurant on Yelp, & we're so glad we did. I had the tomato curry soup, & it was delicious--just the right amount of heat & creaminess. I had the house salad. The dressing was excellent, with hazelnuts & a bit of orange & a slice of beet. My tablemate had the duck & proclaimed it just right. Not greasy, finished with cherries. When he wasn't delighted with the wine he chose the waitress brought 2 different vintages for him to try. We finished with some port. The service was excellent--attentive, helpful, knowledgeable. And we got away for less than $75. Crazy! I only wish we lived closer so we could come back more often. Kudos.
(5)Paul C.
In a region filled with its share of unique and wonderful dining options, we chose to return to Subterra a second night (we were only here for three nights); that's how wonderful our experience was. The service we received was incredible; a total team effort where no one missed a beat. Their recommendations for food and wine based on our experiences during our trip were completely on point. The primavera pesto risotto was phenomenal and would have been the best dish of the night...had we not ordered the halibut special. The halibut was encased in thinly sliced potatoes and served with zucchini, mashed potatoes and a pinot noir based sauce that brought us back to the wonderful experiences we had tasting many of the superb wines of Oregon. Subterra is a must-visit when coming to the Newberg area!!

Friends and fellow Yelpers! It was Monday December 16th 2013 and I'm out with my lovely wife and visiting good friends that live in the middle of Willamette Valley "wine country" in Newberg, Oregon, famous for the Pinot Noir, Pinot Gris and other fantastic wines and breath taking wineries. But equally as good, are some of the amazing restaurants that spot the landscape in the valley and as you can imagine they all pair well with your favorite wines. The restaurant I frequent for dinner while I'm out and about winery hopping in the Northern section of the Willamette Valley is Subterra "A Wine Cellar Restaurant" with the unique ambience that gives you that continued winery experience. The staircase for the Subterra literary was dug out of the side of the overall complex in which it resides, which makes for a really unique entrance into the restaurant. The restaurant is quaint with wonderfully painted landscapes of the Willamette Valley that line the interior of the dining room, which gives you that seated outdoor feeling. It has a small bar with great cocktails and best of all a great selection of wines from up and down the Valley. The food is excellent with a variety of small plates and entrees ranging from pork shoulder, to scallops. Every entrée that I've had was excellent. So if you are a red wine drinker or your favorite is white, Subterra will have something that will hit the spot for you. Thank you Subterra for great memories and being a part of my culinary community. P.S. Subterra has great parking with easy access to the restaurant!
(5)Marisa S.
After a day of wine tasting, I was in need of some food. Thank goodness this restaurant was open, we were actually the first ones there. We ordered the Nagano Beef skewers, they were to die for, I could eat a dozen of those if I can borrow a stomach. They were delicious. We also had the crab cakes, the risotto primavera with fresh pesto, really yummy and the melted brie with maple bourbon fig jam. The cheese was so melty and deliciously decadent. I probably gained 5 pounds after that meal. The restaurant is not completely underground, but you have to walk down to get to it from the street level, hence the name. It is really nice and worth the visit.
(5)Jacqueline G.
Food is outstanding. I had the short ribs and husband the halibut. Portions are huge. Would prefer less actually. Entrees come with soup and salad. We turned down soup as it was a black bean. Too heavy for so much food. If you serve many courses then some should be light and small. I'd return for the food but service was not good. After 45 min waiting for first bite of food we complained. Our waitress got the manager who turned out to be the other server. There lies problem. Understaffed. Also please improve wine list. You are in the wine country. No really great Willamette Valley wines offered. More bad service. We asked if we could have a taste of two white wines offered by glass. Were told NO..we dont do that. Instead we were forced to pay $12 for a flight of 3. Only 1 was drinkable. Every other restaueant where we dine will give you a taste of a wine by the glass before buying. Come here for food if you have a lot of time. Go elsewhere for good wine and good service.
(2)Chris P.
Good healthy gluten free apps and entrees. The halibut is their signature and a must try. Good ambience, and really good friendly service. I would absolutely go back when in Newberg.
(4)Trish W.
Really disappointed the last visit. The first two times I had dinner here the service was excellent. The owner greeted me and the food was excellent. My last visit the service was not great. Came in the door and no staff members to be seen. I had to ring the bells on the door a second time to get someone to stop their conversation in the kitchen to hear me. While waiting for my dinner the severs decided it was a good idea to gossip about the recent loss of two servers.... Very unprofessional. Another server seemed more interested in movie trivia then work
(2)John D.
Had lunch here and the food was very very good. Wine was as well. The service was a little snooty for me.
(4)Jeff G.
Great happy hour from 3-6. I had goat cheese and mushroom puffs $5. I also had their excellent salmon spread with crackers $4. Nice Shirley Temple non alcoholic drink for $4. Very friendly. The three ladies next to me had many free samples of local wines.
(4)Joe M.
On the way to spirit mountain casino to kick off the birthday week, my friend, Phil S., suggested this place on the way for some food bites. When we arrived, we walked downstairs and entered into a quaint and beautiful setting. The servers were very friendly and greeted us. We sat in the restaurant lobby and glanced at the menu. The happy hour is definitely a winner by my book - half off of various plates and the "small plates" weren't really small. Don't get me wrong, they were not really huge either but they certainly satisfied our appetites. I ordered the creamy wild mushroom risotto along with the puff pastries filled with goat cheese and seasoned mushrooms. My friend's ordered oysters and beer sausage of the day. The food arrived promptly and we stuck with water during our visit. Another plus was that there was no drink requirement. The puff pastries were definitely my favorite and I'm still kicking myself for not taking a photo. 3 good size pastries were laid out and I savored each bite. The biscuit was flaky, not dry, and a hint of butter went a long way. The seasoned mushrooms were some of the best I've ever had. The sausage was a pretty good size and it came with sauerkraut. It also was well seasoned and did not taste greasy. The risotto filled me up just right with a great portion and I even shared LOL. The total bill for all we ordered came to under 20 bucks for 3 people. The owner was on site and is a great fellow to chit chat about wine and various events they have planned for the restaurant. The food is sourced from farms locally hence the extra care in great quality. I don't drive by Newberg very often, but when I do I will make sure come here again!
(4)scot s.
Food was well made and tasty. Liked beer selection. Tried a number of there different house reds and none tasted good. Seemed weird that a place that has so many wines all around the restaurant and in Oregon wine country that they could not have one tasty house red. Really enjoyed service staff. Great night out.
(4)Alex S.
Stopped for a wine tasting upstairs and Dan recommended we go to lunch downstairs. Amazing lunch. Peaceful and relaxing. Service was off the charts. Best Cuban I have had in years. Tip: have the French press coffee. It was amazing.
(5)Steve S.
Had dinner here with wife, sister in law and her husband. Service was very attentive. They were out of the Brie and goat cheese puffs which we had looked at for appetizers. It was easy to get beyond that as the halibut was great and perfectly prepared. The Pinot noir (Seufert and Willakenzie) were both good but preferred the latter without a doubt.
(5)Jennifer G.
The first time I had a meal here it was amazing. The second was subparra. The first time I was at a job interview with my current VP with an expense account, perhaps that's the reason the service was amazing. The second time I was casually dressed but was on a date and was hoping the food and service would deliver...alas I think I'll stick to La Rambla in McMinnville.
(3)greg C.
Generally ok but there were misfires I couldn't quite shake. This rather strange soup option against a fairly Italian inspired menu, Thai soup? Poorly thought out against the majority of menu items. Such a different flavor profile. To boot, not well executed filled with a dominant lemongrass flavor that came across as perfume like. I was puzzled. My pork shoulder came in a clump surrounded by a few slices of squash and a handful of what could have been breakfast potatoes. The sauce, I believe mustard based, lacked the punch needed to bring the dish to life. Visually nice presentation but not the soul or depth to keep my palate engaged. I snagged a bit of the Chicken Saltimbocca from my friend and was really disappointed. A overcooked chicken breast rolled and roasted in Prosciutto was painfully dry and lacked flavor and sat above a rice/risotto dish that didn't hold its own. I've had a few renditions of the dish and looked online this morning and it seemed like a opportunity missed, this could have been a standout. It lacked passion and care. That dish should wow a group of italians, not horrify them. Treat it with respect. The Lamb was served rare and nicely executed. Simple, to the point but cared for. I liked it. Rare was the right way to go here...nicely done. Service fantastic, Samantha was wonderful and the experience across the board was great. There seems to be a lack of focus in the menu, disjointed with some of the offerings. Eclectic never seems to really work in fine dining, the refined diner has a hard time following, the masses don't know but don't limit the discerning customer! Vision is the canvas of greatness... Pick a lane, carry it through and swing for the fences with each dish! Passion and focus will elevate the game. Aspire to be the best in the wine country, not a stopping ground for visiting college parents who don't really take notice of the food experience.
(3)Tony M.
Amazing atmosphere, excellent staff, great wine and food. I had the pork with leeks in a mustard sauce and it was delicious. The music selection was spectacular, and the location was worth the drive.
(5)David C.
Great atmosphere, top notch service and ridiculously flavorful food. The lamb shank was amazing and my wife loved the pork. My parents loved their meals too. I'd highly recommend Subterra to anyone.
(5)Alison M.
I have been here a few times for solo happy hour when my husband is out of town. Most recently I met a friend for lunch. We split two of the sandwiches the turkey and the croque monsieur. Both were great. The service was attentive and I enjoyed my meal. One of these days I will make it back for dinner.
(4)Jeannie H.
Great service and gazpacho but the food did not wow us!! It was dark and a bit moldy smell, I guess we just found way better food along our journey.
(3)Wayne G.
Called at 8:30, asked if still serving food at 8:40 arrival and they said no, explains why most small business fail with terrible service like that!
(1)AnnaLee Z.
I was not expecting this level of quality when I arrived in town. I was very impressed with the cocktails and wine selection. The food was so amazing, we split several dishes and I had a mouth-gasm with each one. The rosemary chicken soup was titalating! Halibut wrapped in potato with balsamic reduction totally sent me over the edge of food seduction. This is the only place in town to go for culinary pleasure. Amazing!
(5)Brian H.
This place doesn't disappoint The food is amazing as always. Their halibut is perfectly cooked with the nice crust of thin potato. The fish is then set on top of a delicious pool of Pinot Noir Beurre Rouge. Outstanding! The short ribs are very, very good too. They have a fantastic wine and beer selection and make amazing martinis. Deserts are also well done. The atmosphere is very relaxing - elegant without being stuffy. Only suggestion is I wish the salads were a little more dressed. They have great things in them but usually a little dry for my taste. Staff is very friendly but service on our last visit could have been a little more attentive.
(4)Susan A.
My husband and I had dinner here and enjoyed everything about it. We were offered a wine tasting when we walked in, which was pretty cool. They were featuring Sokol Blosser wines by the glass, so we tasted 5 of their wines, then went to our table. Our waiter, Jimmy, did a great job though he was pretty busy. We ordered wine and a selection of small plates. They have an extensive wine list with lots of local wines. The food was excellent. We had mussels, roasted pork and spaetzle, house made sausage, asparagus and black bean soup. It was all so good, and everyone there was so friendly.
(5)Dennis O.
We arrived thirty minutes early and after purchasing some wine upstairs,, spent the next two hours with our beat friends Mike and Chris having one of the most enjoyable dining experiences of our lives. Excellent service and amazing menu. We highly recommend this little out of the way spot when you come to Newberg, Oregon.
(5)Jerry B.
This is one of the best kept secrets in Oregon's wine country. It is hard to find, located in the bottom floor of an older building. But don't give up. My wife and I had small plates consisting of Pate accompanied with their own bread, crab cakes they made themselves and a baked Brie with bourbon Fig sauce. Everything was freshly made. The wine selection is wonderful. The quality of the food was excellent. The atmosphere is cozy and romantic. Don't pass this up
(5)Glen S.
Jaime and Valerie will be your favorite new serving team! J in the bar and Valerie as your tableside cuisine expert... Be sure to let them order... Why not? They know the menu and.... Such fun!!!!

Fine dining at an affordable price, but you can leave the tie at home! Janet and Martin have finally given dimension to the cuisine you can choose from in Newberg- from lunchtime, to happy hour and dinner time. I haven't had a good fish taco from the time I left San Diego- until Subterra came to town. Paired with a Greyhound, made from freshly squeezed-to-order grapefruit juice, this combination will knock your socks off. For lunch I suggest the Gorgonzola Steak Wrap with the delicious sweet pickled onions- my mouth is already watering as a write this! Everything on the menu is great too- but those are just my personal favorites! With that said, what really makes Subterra so great, is the people who work there. Not only do all the servers know me on a first name basis- but Janet and Martin consistently value my feedback. As a service provider myself, I can certainly appreciate the personalized service from the man (and woman) behind the curtain. They can teach you a thing or two about great food and give you a history lesson all at the same time! They've been all over the USA, but selfishly, I hope it stops here in Yamhill County. Oh. I also have to add here that I have never been a chocolate lover, but Martin's Chocolate Pot de Creme is out of this world. It's velvety smoothness is the true highlight, topped by a stiff peak of whipped cream that has turned me a chocolate convert. Now THAT'S saying something. Bravo, Martin. Bravo.

I usually love this place. However, we tried to stop for dinner tonight at 8 and we were turned away. The bartender said they were open until 9, but they didn't have enough customers so they were going home early. A few customers were seated and eating at the time. Hmmmmm... Not the service I expect from this restaurant. Maybe they should change their hours if they aren't busy enough to stay open.

Subterra really surprised me, in a great way!! Food- Real flavorful, a lot of different options, but my favorites were the adult mac and cheese blt and the spaetzle marsala. Everyone else in our party really enjoyed the food as well! Drinks- Were really flavorful had an amazing manhattan. Wine list had a lot of pricing options but I thought was lacking some diversity.. No California wine? Really? Service- Really energetic staff, for being so understaffed! Samantha was our server and did an outstanding job, she was very knowledgable of the menu and had some great wine pairing suggestions. All four of us that were dining are in the business and thought service was paced beautifully. Overall a great place! Highly recommend!! A+ yelp for another great recommendation.

Wow. What a gem. I was expecting yet another pretentious over promising under delivering hoity-toity establishment. This place totally delivers and is elegant without being intimidating - and everything was absolutely delicious. What a pleasant surprise.

I have just recently moved from Ky to Or and this already a top favorite for my fiancé and myself. Excellent service, great wine choices and the food was 5+* in my book. We will be returning back as much as possible. Delicious :)

So first of all the food is fantastic. We ended up eating 5 courses and each course was amazing. I had scallops and they were cooked to perfection with a delightful basil purée and some fresh creamed corn which was not your average creamed corn! Next was our cocktails. We had probably the eat martinis we've ever tasted. And finally, the service was really outstanding. Our server, Merle was quirky, gave great service, and had a great sense of humor. She really made our experience much more inviting. If you are near you should check this place out! We spent about 100$ with food and drinks between the two of us.

Seriously good food and vibe....even 8 months later! We had no idea they offer a Happy Hour, that was a nice surprise when we walked in for dinner and wine. Also nice to see they were busy and doing well. We sat at the bar and ordered the red of the day. Service was top notch this time, unlike the last time we were in. The beef skewers were recommended by our server, but I was not impressed- they tasted a bit over done. The croquettes were awesome though! It's nice to see Newberg has a place for Happy Hour that is a step up from the usual "chain" restraunt. I hope Subterra stays around, they have a good thing here.

The food was very good. I was happy with my Zarzuela and my wife loved her veal steak. Salads were ok. Soups were good. Desserts were good. There was an adequate wine selection for a fair price. We enjoyed the one we got. We had nice servers who were attentive to our needs. in particular we were told twice that the main courses would be delayed. I found that frustrating in that I asked for a later reservation and was asked to come in earlier than we wanted to. In the end dinner took over two hours. When I returned to the hotel the concierge asked how it was and I commented on great delay apparently caused by kitchen. He replied that if a returning guest has any concern it is because of long delays during meal. Potential diners be warned: this is slow food...but it was good with good service except for the kitchen.

The food was amazing! The Moscow Mule was the best I've ever had, the candied ginger and house made ginger beer made it one we won't soon forget. The halibut was lovely also. Our server was wonderful, but it appeared that she was the only one working hard... We watched another server pass by a half eaten plate of food on a dirty table next to us multiple times, only clearing it at the end of the evening. We both remarked that we were glad for the server we had, multiple guests around us complained of slow service and lack of attention to detail. Thus only 3 stars, because we felt bad for the other guests and the food left sitting on dirty tables.

We received a gift certificate and hasn't eaten dinner here before. So we had no expectations. Ambiance was wonderful, service attentive, dinner was amazing. What a surprising jewel. We will be back.

Very good food, ate here yesterday on way through town. Delicious Chinese chicken salad & my parents had great sandwiches. Picked it because of yelp & once again I was not disappointed.
(4)William R.
A very pleasing experience. The food was varied with the onion soup being passable and tasted like it was from a can. The salad was great and the main courses wee very good with the exception that the rack of lamb was warm and not hot. It might have waited under a heat lamp to long. Wine list was good and the markups were reasonable. The service was generally very good but started off poorly. Considering there were only a few tables occupied when we arrived. Would go back again.

Literally, steps down from what you should expect in cuisine, service & ambience. One of the more unprofessional meals ever experienced.

I took my family here and was so disappointed. The service was extremely slow and I don't know if the waiter was to blame of the kitchen. My guess is the waiter because the restaurant was not that busy. The food was terrible for half my table also. I got the adult mac and cheese which was burnt and over breaded. My father in-laws steak was under seasoned the veggies where limp. The biggest issue was the flies that would not go away. I get dealing with flies if you're eating outside but this place is inside and underground. I was so excited to go here because they gluten free items on their menu and I was so let down by them.

This is one of my favorites in Yamhill County, especially in Newberg! I really enjoy their happy hour! They always have good wine on special (a red and white) and great appetizers. I will say that I've notice the happy hour menu has perhaps slimmed down in options in the last six months. But the offerings that are currently available are great. I particularly like the beef skewers and salmon spread. I happened to be at Subterra last night and I tried the creme brulee, it was also scrumptous! Plus the setting is fun. At first it feels a bit mysterious as you descend to an basement restaurant. Then you are greeted with an intimate and warm setting that is perfect for a girls night out or a special dinner with that perfect person. I haven't had a full dinner here yet, but I will be sure to review again when I do!

Recommended by a local. Food was great but service was average, once we ordered and the waitress had other tables, we were quickly forgotten. Never received my soup and at that point didn't care, would not go back. Lots of other places to try in area!
(2)Jaime S.
I can't say enough wonderful things about Subterra! The wine, the FOOD, the environment all beyond wonderful! Here's what we had; mushroom puffs, oysters (so FRESH), adult Mac and cheese and a pork dish that would make you call for more! Come as you are. Make reservations and enjoy the friendly casual service. Don't be in a hurry, just relax.

My husband and I were looking for a place to eat before our drive back to Tillamook one night and decided on Subterra based on Yelp reviews. This is a great little semi-hidden restaurant. We were seated immediately and our server was very attentive and courteous. The only complaint I have is that he didn't really know anything about wine, so when I asked him if my choice of Cabernet would be a good one for my meal selection, he told me he had no idea. Hmm. They were offering two selections of soup that evening--cuban black bean and split pea with ham. Both were very good and hit the spot on the cold evening. We also each got a house salad with our meal which included endive and hazelnuts (always a plus!). What I like most about this restaurant is that each entree is served with soup and salad, making them very economical choices if you think about it. I had the German style short rib of beef with spaetzle and braised red cabbage. This was a delicious combination, although the short rib was just slightly overcooked. My husband got the Adult Mac and Cheese BLT minus the bacon. Now this was something I definitely could get behind. I could smell it from across the table and would definitely order it the next time we go again. In response to the decor comments...I thought the setting was lovely, calm, and serene, and have never seen decorations like that in a strip mall. I think they did very well with the space, and I never once noticed that there weren't any windows. In my opinion, that's a pretty amazing feat given that they are located in what could be considered a basement. Definitely not worthy of a complaint in my book.

Came here on a weekday evening in Summer 2011. We found Subterra based on its high Yelp reviews after a day of wine-tasting. It was hard to decide whether to give Subterra 1 or 2 stars, but it seems that 1 star is appropriate given that it fell so far below our expectations. Apparently the restaurant is significantly understaffed during the first half of the week, as there were only two servers, and (as related by the waitstaff) a limited kitchen staff. It took a long time for the server to take our order, and during the course of our meal our contact with the server was meager infrequent. It was also our eventual understanding that the main chef was not working that night. E. got a chicken dish (which is apparently no longer on the menu). And J. got the sweet potato agnolotti. The chicken was so dry as to be inedible (we sent it back), and the agnolotti were mediocre at best. Fortunately the server comped the chicken dish, but overall the service and food quality were a real damper to an otherwise extraordinary visit to the Willamette Valley. Maybe Subterra is much better during the weekend or the later part of the week, but please be advised that Mon-Weds is definitely a bad time to go.

My favorite new place in Newberg - great atmosphere, service, cuisine and libations! My daughter and I especially enjoyed the Oysters on the Half Shelf and Nagano Beef Skewers during HH - will be back soon...

I've eaten here 3 times now and so far, all 3 times have been very good. Happy hour meals are a pretty good deal. Service is always friendly and the decor is nice, but I think their location hurts them and so they are rarely very busy. It's a bit awkward to get in and park, and then you have to descend to the basement. Once you get in, it's nice - but it doesn't look that great from the outside.

As local residents of Newberg we were really excited to have our christmas dinner at Subterra this year. There were only 4 of us and we usually go to the Jory at the Alison Hotel or our other favorite, Painted Lady, but this time we decided to try Subterra. We arrived around 7 and there were only 2 other tables of guests, the atmosphere was great....but thats about all that was great that night. We ordered the appetizers, pate and smoked salmon dip. Both were OK. First came the soups. Mushroom was good, the black bean soup however was terrible. It was like someone just opened a can of black beans, heated it up and poured it in the bowl. The salads were not very good at all, the lettuce as soggy and it was just thrown on the plate, i had no clue what kind of salad it was since no one told us. Last came the main course....we all ordered something different so one had to be good right? House made macaroni and cheese, how can you screw that up?? Well they did, did they cook it 3 days ago and just heat it up for tonight? Encrusted halibut- not edible. It smelled pungent and tasted tangy...i truely think the fish was bad. Steak with jalapeno cream sauce- again horrible. The sauce was terrible tasting. I cant believe they are actually serving this food. Short ribs?? is that what that was? honestly after the 3 others tried it and told me how bad it was i didnt even bother. We were all so dissappointed. I would never go back again. They should consider changing the name to subterrible. maybe they need gordon ramsey.

This special place just gets better with time. The lunch food is awesome. I had their grilled romaine w/ beef salad which was the best I've ever had. The staff and kitchen are very attentive to my dietary needs. I've recommended this restaurant to countless people.

Bad. We happened to be in Newberg and ventured here based on Yelp reviews. The place opens at 11:30 for lunch. We arrived at about 11:45. The hostess sat us, brusquely, and we were the ONLY customers in the place. And that was the extent of our visit. No one ever came to our table. Period. The waitress walked past us, pulled an apron out of some closet, put it on, and then disappeared. We sat for a few more minutes before deciding the experience could only go downhill. We got up to leave, walking past the same waitress who was just standing at the bar. She saw us leave and said....nothing. Really? Are you so busy that you'd prefer not to wait on guests at 11:45 on a Monday? Ok. You got your wish. Resume staring at the wall. Btw: as an aside, I am so confused how other Yelpers can think the decor is in any way cool or trendy. The decor SUCKS. Faux finishing, cheap gauzy fabric, dusty wine bottles, dentist office art. Just crappy. Maybe cool in 1987. In a strip mall. Enough said.

Before ordering a full entree I would recommend getting salad or soup and then splitting one or two small plates between you and another guest or two. My sister and I both got the steak soup which was good (not amazing) and shared a small plate of beef strips (very tasty!). Brother ordered the Mac N Cheese on the entree list and he loved it. Mom and dad shared salad and then we ordered a few small plates for the table (parents said the salmon spread was amazing). Monday nights be sure to ask about the wine special (I believe it is 50% off bottles of wine). Waitress was very nice but was serving the bar and entire restaurant by herself. Also met the Chef who was very pleasant. We will definitely be back!

I've eaten here twice now at this wine country restaurant and both times it's been great. Long review follows, but it's because the overall experience was so darn positive with such good energy. Stopping here for dinner was definitely a great way to shake off the drizzly winter blues! Ambience: It's located in a funky triangle shop area right off Highway 99. You go down a few steps to enter, it's down a level from the street. Despite that, it's cozy and warm and comfy feeling, with warm yellow and amber paint colors and a striking vineyard mural along the back wall. Not a perfect space, being underground, but they've done awesome with what it is I think. Food: I can't remember what I ate at the first meal as it was a while ago but I remember being quite happy. I just ate there Thursday at their special community-style international-themed meal. It was "Havana Night" and the Cuban food was awesome. My husband and I are fans of Cuban food, having both lived in Florida (like the owner & chef of the restaurant, coincidentally!). I had their mojitos, one of my favorite drinks, which were fabulous. Totally recommend them. I also especially recommend the first course, a crazy good fusion style appetizer of "Mojo Pork Cocktails - Mash of Butternut Squash Topped with Mojo Marinated Pork, Parsley Onion Gremolata, and a Wedge of Lime" - they've added it to the menu because all us guests that night raved so about it so there's the full description. Hungry yet? Then it was ham croquettes (good but not as delicious as the mojo pork butternut dish), and as main course vieja ropa beef stew with rice and black beans and chopped green onions and fried plantains (loved all these), followed up by flan for desert. I was too roly poly at that point to even finish my flan, which is wrong because I adore flan and it was very good. Staff: The community style aspect was also great, even though I am a total introvert, it was clear that many of the folk at the meal had caught on to the special weekly themed meal before us and this was their second or third time back. The other 5-6 guests at our table were fun & friendly, the chef and the owner came out and told us about the dishes before each course, and the whole thing was so friendly and jocular and professional that it was great.

Went here with some friends on a Saturday night. You would never see this place just driving by unless you questioned why so many cars were parked together in the lot right off 99. The GOOD: Wait service was tremendous, included dinner salad was delicious, and included black bean soup was tasty. The setting is upscale and comfortable. One of our party had adult mac and cheese...tops. The other three dinners for some reason seemed to be overly salty, but still tasty. Not so GOOD: We arrived at 6:40 for a 7 p.m. reservation and were told we would have to wait because if we were seated now the cooks would be mad at the hostess as their "routine" would be off. A simple "we are preparing your table and will have you seated in a few minutes" would have sufficed as she did make it feel like we were intruding. This does not impact my dining, but the bathrooms were gross....toilet did not flush well, no towels in dispenser...just sitting on the on toilet with random wetness (pretended this was water and not the other yellow liquid). Overall, I was certainly impressed and would certainly go back to try new menu items when they appear. I would probably not make a special trip again to Newberg, but would definitely eat there again if passing through. Certainly has good potential....just not quite there yet.

Subtrrra restaurant in Newberg is a surprizng great find. Every part of the meal from the Brie and Syrah to my potato encrusted halibut to the deserts was truly delicious. Best meal I've had in years. Great food & Service in Newberg! Who knew?
(4)Rachel K.
One of my favorite restaurants in Yamhill Valley. I almost always get the Rosemary onion pizza because it's SO good. Last time, though, I got the Ginger Chicken Salad and that was awesome too.

Stopped in for lunch and was totally impressed with their Newberger hamburger, which delivered a flavor explosion with every bite. This hamburger is made of ground beef that is blended with bacon and short rib. It comes well accompanied with garnishes, their own ketchup and blue cheese. Dessert was pineapple foster with coconut ice cream. Imagine banana foster with a substitution of fresh grilled pineapple in place of the bananas. Very yummy!

I recently returned to SubTerra -a friend was celebrating a birthday. In my last review I was terribly disappointed in the service and the food. However, I was pleasantly surprised by both the food and the service....especially the service. We camped our self in the little side room off the bar and ate several small plates and had two lovely bottles of Daisy Creek Syrah. My friends, who were first time guests, really loved it. Service is really important to me. I want someone to be glad I am there. While Jessica wasn't over the top happy to see us she paid attention to us and made sure we felt welcome. Come on folks...it's all about the experience. If you really want to learn about service and food - get in touch with Jamie Oliver's restaurant in London - 15. Going to this restaurant was the highlight of my life. fifteen.net/Pages/defaul…

Bleh! Boo! No thank you, sir! I guess my husband and I are the only people who've ever had a bad experience here, or at least the only folks on Yelp to admit it? Wait - it wasn't just a bad experience - it was horrible. It was so bad my husband and I got into a huge fight afterwards because we were so cranky. Making a reservation was easy for a weekend evening over Memorial Day weekend. The night of, we decided we wanted to head over early so we called to see if we could come in earlier. We called the restaurant several times over the course of about half an hour...and it just rang and rang and rang. Finally we just gave up and drove over. When we walked in, no one greeted us. The servers were mad-dashing in and out of the kitchen, the phone was ringing off the hook, and we were completely ignored for five minutes after we arrived. It's not like folks couldn't see us - the hostess stand is between the kitchen and the dining room. Finally, the hostess (owner?) saw us and brusquely asked us if we needed help. Um, yeah. Reservation for two. We're early. I might add the place was PACKED...and LOUD. There was an incredibly large (~ 20 people) party in the back of the restaurant, which I thought was odd since the place isn't that big. That group definitely took over the place. Well, guess where we were seated? It was like a bad game of Diner Dash. You don't EVER sit the couple next to the party of 20. EVER. Oh wait, you do if there's no place else to put them. Sigh. If I knew then what I know now... When we were seated we were given our menus, and then left to our own devices for about twenty minutes. I'm not kidding. We did get water, but no one came by to say hello or ask if we wanted a drink...and I noticed that other tables around us seemed devoid of any food. Not good. Finally our waitress came over and we placed our orders. My husband ordered the short ribs, and I ordered the duck cassoulet. I'd read here on Yelp (and the menu) that we had our choice of a couple of soups but we weren't asked what we wanted. As quickly as she showed up, she was gone. After about a half-hour we got our salads. They were dropped off...no explanation of what they were...nothing. It was a couple pieces of endive with some goat cheese, walnuts, pear tomatoes, and a nice vinaigrette. It was actually pretty good...I think I was just turned off by the DIY aspect of deciphering what it was. For the record, it was impossible to flag down a server. There were only three and they were covering about 15 tables...including the behemoth party next to us. The soup...again, I have no idea what it was but it tasted like mushrooms, was also good. It was dumped off at our table with no explanation...but it was nice to see that as we were getting our soup, so were the people around us who had clearly been there longer than us. My husband liked his short ribs entree but didn't think it was anything exceptional. Unfortunately, my duck was dry and underseasoned, and the cassoulet was too salty. The cassoulet also came in this huge crock - it was enough for probably three people. I felt bad for the party of four older folks behind us, who were there for a birthday...the restaurant "lost" their dessert order. That prompted us to take a pass on dessert. Besides, at that point we just wanted to get the hell out. At one point our server did manage to see how annoyed we were (was hard for us to talk given the noise level), and told us that the large party showed up 45 minutes late and that totally threw everything in the place off. Wow. Bummer, but not my problem. Why didn't we leave, when things were obviously going so wrong? It was one of only a couple "romantic" dinners we had during the trip, and I didn't want to ruin it for my husband...and vice-versa. After a lengthy "discussion" afterwards, we both will speak up more vehemently rather than suffer through a crappy meal and crappy service. I think what disappointed me the most about Subterra's service that night and total mishandling of all of the diners was the complete lack of acknowledgement about what was going on. I guess if you just pretend like you don't notice food is coming out at a snail's pace and orders are being lost, then your customers won't either. Out of all the places in Newberg, this dud was my choice. The whole "white tablecloth" cache just kills me. I can put a white tablecloth on my dining room table...if I serve Chef Boyardee Ravioli though straight from the can, the presence of a tablecloth doesn't make it fine dining. This place gets two stars because the salad and soup were good...but if that's all we wanted, we could've gone to Sizzler. Are Sizzlers still around?
(2)Heather M.
We went last night. The food was great. The service was friendly. The place was pretty empty on a Sunday night. The server didn't overserve us but was attentive. My only complaint would be the price for my entree. $23 for a savory crepe seems high.
(4)Andrew P.
Second time i have been here. I have to say i really would of gave 4.5 stars if it was available. Let me just say great wines, and great happy hour, and not to mention 1/2 priced wine list on Mondays!! This little sub terrainan gem is great, I really think you should make those croquettes and that crazy thing you dip it in a main stay on you happy hour menu (please!!) Just really glad that New/Dee has a great place to hang after work that rivals any down town P-town fine dining spot. Last and not least i have to say that this time was much better than the last experience than i had last time. It was great to see the owner and her high energy staff taking control being so attentive.

I meant to write a review a few weeks back but haven't had a chance. We went on a Friday night and were able to be immediately seated. We were all alone on the left side of the restaurant, which was nice (there were 6 of us). I started with the cuban black bean soup (I don't eat clam chowder) and it was a little too much bean for me. I barely ate a quarter before I had to stop. The flavor was good but wish it was more than just a bowl of beans. For dinner, I had the chicken saltimbocca and it was good. I wish it was served on a larger plate. The portion size was fine but it was difficult to eat on the small rectangle plate it was served on. It ended up getting a bit messy when trying to cut the chicken and asparagus. I tried a bite of the pork and for not liking mustard, it was good. The service was ok. Our server was so funny and friendly.. Just a bit on the forgetful side. It was a reasonable price for dinner and we were not rushed. I wouldn't go out of my way to go back but I would recommend to anyone looking for something decent and low key.

We stopped in for dinner on July 18, 2013. After our great experience here last year, we decided to make dining at Subterra a tradition on our annual trip to OR wine country. The food was wonderful, and the service was very good. This is not a fast-food restaurant, so you need to go here knowing that you'll have more than just a meal. Consider it an evening out in a relaxed environment. I particularly liked that they don't try to rush you through your meal just to turn the tables. And quaffing a bottle of wine isn't a chugging competition. They used to comp corkage fees for visiting winemakers (of which I'm one), but they didn't do it this time. That's the only negative aspect to our experience there. I can wholeheartedly recommend Subterra for a relaxed, fine-dining experience.
(4)Brittany W.
We received 2 free corkage fee vouchers for Subterra so we went and had dinner with them. We have been there before and we know the food is delicious so we were really looking forward to the evening with our friends. Everything was going great until halfway through dinner the owner Janet came to our table and started interrogating us where we got our vouchers and began claiming we were abusing the purpose behind the vouchers. Our server said nothing to us about the vouchers when we gave them to her just took them and opened both bottles of wine. Instead of educating us about the idea behind the vouchers for next time Janet refused to honor them even though her staff had already opened our wine. She returned again during desert further interrupting our meal to insist there was no reason to be mad and till insisting that she wouldn't honor her own program. The extra $8 on each of our bills wasn't a big deal but the unprofessional manner in which the owner conducted herself ruined our dinner and we will not be returning.
