Old school ice cream fountains, burgers, and good service.... that's the Jem for ya! It's been in Newberg a long time, great little ice cream shop for a cute little town! I've been bringing my kids here ever since they could say ice cream, and now that they are teens, we still stop in on ocassion! Ice cream flavors vary from time to time, great banana splits, and greasy burgers too! Price is still on the low end, and the service is always great. In the summer months or anytime the bright yellow thing shines outside, there always seems to be a line, but the line moves quickly. No exotic flavors here like in Portland, but good ole' fashion ice cream is hard to come by these days. The place is small, probably the original size from back in the day, an old jukebox in the corner and 50's style diner booths decked out in red and white gives the place it's "old school" feeling. Along the back wall are baseball team photos from the past many years that Jem has sponsored. Definitely gives the "little town feel" in here. Glad to see they are still around so many years later!

Your basic 50s ice cream and burger shop. The decor and music are all from the period. The food was decent, the shakes very good, and the service was very good. My clan caused a mini-rush and they brought another team member up to deal with the rush. Well done. We ordered a garden burger and malted shake which were both very good. My daughter and I sampled numerous flavors of ice cream before she settled on the chocolate chip. Good stuff. All in all a very pleasant stop for old fashioned burgers and ice cream.

I love coming here. It's often packed and noisy, but it has that authentic diner feel. Great ice cream, but even better burgers. The nachos could use some work though... Because of the store's set up, it can be hard to order, or to know whose turn it is to order so be prepared for a little bit of chaos. They've gotten tighter on the quality control of ice cream proportions, which sucks. I used to love getting huge scoops from them, but 2 scoops now looks the same as 1 scoop.

Go for ice cream. Good selection, very good ice cream, nice staff there, great value and we got in and out at an off time, like 3:00 PM. I suspect it gets a bit busy around meal time.

For a soda fountain/burger joint, this place has good food and great vintage ambiance! I was skeptical that we could find anything healthy but they make a great garden burger with mushrooms, and the guacamole is really good too!

I love ice cream! Jem 100 is a classic diner-style restaurant known for its burgers and ice cream. The beef for the burgers comes from local farms, which is a good business practice. I am a fan of their chicken strips, fries and moose tracks ice cream

Great quick stop on a hot day! Shakes made with real ice cream and real flavor.

If you live in Newberg and love hamburgers,Jem 100 is a must for you! They have plenty of different types of burgers and all are amazing! I personally like the double swiss. They do get busy being a ice cream shop in a college town but if you can wait 5 minutes for food you will really enjoy it!

Paid $3 for a 75% empty waffle cone. When I nicely asked if I could pay for a second scoop (so I could have some ice cream with my cone) I was told no because I had already touched the cone. I threw away my cone and walked out. Never again...

I've been there 3 times, and I REALLY want to love it. It's been there forever, family run, gives jobs to school/college kids, retro theme attempted, all the stuff you hope for in a local business. But the food to me just seems all very generic of the restaurant supplier frozen variety (especially the flat chicken strips and regular fries). The counter workers are friendly, but each visit has taken forever to receive the order. The ice cream is weighed in front of you which seems very odd to me, as I've never ever seen another place do that to save a penny? Would I go back? Yes to support local. 3 Stars for local.

I'm new in town and have been here a few times in the past month. The ice cream quality is good, Umpqua brand, but the service has been mediocre at best. The young ladies working the counter were not particularly welcoming or friendly, and they seemed annoyed that I wanted to sample the ice cream to find a combination that would go well together in my four scoops that I was ordering for friends and I. The girl serving ice cream cut me off at 5 tastes and indicated I could not taste any more flavors and needed to decide- even though I was the only customer at the time and was trying to find complimentary flavors for the multiple scoops. Further insult was her scoop sizes. They were quite small in comparison to other similar establishments and she seemed weirdly concerned about the weight of each scoop. In the time she spent ensuring each scoop was precisely a certain weight, she could have served multiple customers (had there been). I understand that restaurants need to watch the costs, but this is quite a ridiculous practice and/or adherence to policy. Overall, I'd say the establishment is overpriced for the level of service and product offered. If they focus more on providing a more warm and welcoming environment centered on customer service rather than worrying about the weight of ice cream and how many flavors a customer tastes, it may be a more positive experience that encourages customer loyalty and return visits. That being said, customers are equally responsible for not abusing the privilege to taste ice cream before buying. If Jem 100 must limit tastes, it might be worthwhile to politely inform customers that they're allowed to taste X number of flavors before purchasing.

Went on Tuesday for the First time with my Son. I loved it the service was excellent. The ice cream was great and the price was so reasonable. I would definitely come back. Thank you for another great memory with my son.

I've been here 3 times. First visit was to get ice cream and it was almost 3 years ago. I don't remember much from that visit. The last two times I've been there was in the last 3 months. I ordered chicken strips and sweet potato fries, and the most recent visit was 2 days ago, I ordered a BBQ burger. I was so disappointed with the quality of food. The chicken strips tasted like they were fried in oil that hasn't been changed in over a year. They tasted bitter. I thought the fries would taste better, but they were so greasy and honestly didn't have much flavor to them, I didn't think you can go wrong with fries, but I was wrong. I expected a little more, being that it is a family run business that has been around for so long, and they have a unique story, I thought it was going to be Newberg's gem, I was wrong. My most recent visit was the result of being hungry, and I thought I'd give it one more try.....oh I was so wrong. I ordered a burger and the meat tasted old and gamey. It first made me think that it underwent a freezer burn. I left the place and had the worst stomach ache afterward. My advice is put a little more love into your food, it can't possibly cost you that much. There is great potential here however, when you serve hamburger that tastes like it is old, it's just wrong.

Old school....is right. Look and feel is out if the 50-60s and the good hits the spot

Jem 100 is a place I want to like. But the last few times I have gone the service was terrible. We came in at 9pm which is one hour before they close. They couldn't be more rude. They were already closing up and were audibly annoyed. The ice creams were all covered and half of the refrigerators were empty. As someone who has worked in food service, one of the worse things you can do is start closing early. 5, 10 or even 15 minutes before closing, sure. But an hour is absolutely ridiculous. One of my friends asked for a shake and the server just stared at him and the walked away. One guy was pretty cool and even came over and asked if we needed anything. But the others were either talking to their high school friends or sulking. Another time we came in at 9:30. Before we walked in we could see them staring at us and talking. When I walked in I asked if it was alright and confirmed they closed at 10. The girl actually said "uhhh....like, we are closing" So we left. They lost the service of 6-7 of us.

Its OK. The burgers aren't that great-they lack cheese...and something else I dont care to keep trying them to figure out. The onion rings are really good and the shakes are awesome but I have yet to be impressed by the burgers.
(2)Jenny G.
Wow, other reviewers aren't kidding about weighing your cup/cone of ice cream! There was a huge line behind me and they're painstakingly, slowly removing about 1/2 teaspoon of ice cream from my dish to get the right weight. Top that with the fact that they only had enough flavors on hand to fill half their coolers, and what was there wasn't even correctly labeled, and I'd have to say that next time I'll be driving a few extra minutes to get ice cream at Baskin Robins in Sherwood.

Everyone is raving about the ice cream, it's good.... but it's basic Umpque and Cascade Glacier. You can buy it at any cash and carry. The food (we had burgers, BLT, Corn Dog, Chicken strips and Tater Tots) was as generic as it gets. Not awesome but not awful. On par with Burgerville prices, actually a little cheaper, but the quality is not as good as Burgerville. The part that irritated me the most was the fact that they weight all the ice cream cones and cups before they hand them to you and YES, take 1/tsp. off if it's over weight. I saw this happen at least three times, the funny part is I NEVER once saw them add to it... SO I don't know if they always over scoop or are trained to only take off not add to. Either way it felt cheap to me. We paid over three dollars for a single waffle cone and they amount of ice cream was less than you get at Baskin Robins (they will weight it to make sure of that fact). I work in a small mom and Pops Dinner in a nearby town and we buy the same ice cream, I get that they need to make a profit but to nit pick it down to the weight seems extreme given the profit margin. I would skip this place and hit Burgerville or right around the corner Jac's for frozen house made custard instead.

First off I had a horrible experience at this place, I called ahead of time to see if they had cotton candy ice cream, the girl I spoke to on the phone told me they absolutely had it. I get there and asked for cotton candy ice cream and she told me they were out. She was completely rude, and it was really irritating that I called to make sure they had it before I drove all the way across town & they didn't.. I am not happy with their service. Won't be going here anytime soon.

This is a local favorite that provides consistently good service and food. Besides the ice cream they have a great food menu that is classic greasy spoon fare that is filling and delicious. One thing I really appreciate is seeing the owner working there on the front lines almost every time we are there. A Newberg classic!
(5)George B.
It was pretty bland, the ice cream is over priced considering they serve Umpqua brand ice cream (pretty cheap). Seriously go to any corner store and pick some up for half the price. I figured okay whatever I'll give it a second try and have a burger, surely this will be the redeeming quality.. nope. It tasted like a cheap freezer burnt burger. I then realized that nothing on the menu is made in house, its just heated there after it comes off a Sysco truck. I'm sorry I wanted this to be my burger place down the street but no. Save some money, go to McDonald's. You'll actually get better quality.

Perfect end to a perfect day. After a hard workout at the Evergreen water park, we stopped in for sundaes. When we walked through the door we were transported back 60 years in time replete with sparkly booths and doo wop music. We enjoyed excellent service, yummy Umpqua ice cream topped with hot fudge, whip cream and nuts. A perfect spot for an old fashioned dessert. We'll be back to try the banana split!

Excellent food, service was OK.... Fed my family of 5, with an excellent dinner, and ice cream for under $40!

They're so nice here. The vibe is so great, listening to oldies and chilling/eating with a friend or loved one. Staff is lovely. Good vibes.
(5)Dave E.
Good ice cream, great floats, great shakes, good enough burgers and fries, and pretty fast service. However, the staff that work that, can get very busy so often times, the tables and the restaurant isn't as clean as it should be. But we like it overall and come here regularly.
