The szechwan beef is amazing. The crab puffs and pork fried rice are also fantastic! I have been eating there for years and I cant get enough. I'm not a fan of everything but you can't go wrong with my recommended dishes.

We love this place. I always order General Tso's Eggplant because it's delicious. Their lunch specials are cheap and the amount of their servings are good. One of the servers does not know how to smile though, but the cashier is very friendly. Once again, the food here are delicious and affordable.

Probably the worst Chinese food I've ever had :( everything was over sauced and the rice was just white rice with frozen peas and carrots in them. Even my sister who thought that Chinese food couldn't go wrong couldn't eat this food!

It's been my personal experience that it is hard to find good food in the Milwaukee area. Well, Imperial Garden is a rose among thorns in Milwaukee. My quest to find the best Chinese in Portland (and surrounding area) continues. The place is clean, the service pleasant and the food is very good. First off- I apply my "Hot and Sour Soup Test"- *I love Hot and Sour soup when done right. However, I have found that it can range anywhere from inedible to incredible at any given restaurant. I think this is very telling, because: A) This is generally the first thing to come to your table, this is their first food impression, and, B) The quality & taste of this soup is very often telling on how the rest of the meal will be. The Hot and Sour at Imperial Garden didn't disappoint. I was in at lunchtime and ordered a very inexpensive lunch special for $6. General Tso's chicken. This came with a cup of Hot and Sour, a spring roll, two wontons and the entree/rice. This soup is excellent. Very fresh and tasty. If I was returning home immediately after lunch, I would have ordered a large to go. The apps come on the plate. Everything was very fresh, tasted very good and you get a good amount of it. I wasn't overly thrilled with the General Tso's, the sauce was a little heavy, but it was still very good. Overall, Imperial Garden is a really good Chinese place I would gladly return anytime I'm in the Milwaukee area. Hopefully, next time I'm in, I can also order some soup to go.

Best Chinese food I've ever had. I've been all up and down the west coast, to China Towns near and far. Even been up to Canada in Vancouver and Victoria with heavy Asian populations. The food served at Imperial Gardens in little old Milwaukie, Oregon is the best I've had without paying $100 a plate. Best Hot and Sour Soup and General Tso Chicken ever concocted. Been going since I was 7 years old and I'm now 25. I recently moved out of town but my last meal in town was this place. That should tell you all you need to know.

Heard good & bad about this establishment so decided to give it a try. This was the first time in a long time that the Sweet & Sour Chicken, or any Sweet & Sour of any variety that I've had in a LONG time that actually had more than the meat & sauce in it! Their Sweet & Sour Chicken actually also had pineapple, bell pepper and carrot in it and was very good. I also had their Hot & Sour soup which was very good. Large portion of food and very reasonable prices. I will definetly return to try other menu items.

Have purchased take out from here 3 times. All three times were very disappointing. Fried rice burnt twice. General Tsao's was flavorless, chicken was dry. Egg flower soup was bland, weird consistency. The worst was the won-ton noodle soup, soup was cloudy, extremely over cooked pork, won tons were mush, no flavor. The noodles were disgusting, like they had been sitting in water for awhile. Took one bite and couldn't stomach it. Only positive, the people who work here are pretty friendly.

Well, we've eaten a total of three times here with decending levels of satisfaction. The second trip, I tried the Seafood Noodle Soup - while large and filling, the overall flavor was not worth ordering again. I think it's a matter of care taken in the broth and they probably just don't sell enough to invest into making it special. Sorry guys. I did get some free Kimchee which was the plain nappa cabbage type, which is fine. On our third trip, we ordered the top dinner combo which came with a sizzling rice soup, which again was just okay - like a fancy egg drop soup with more stuff in it... Nothing offensive, but not that special. our entrees, mooshu pork and sesame beef. The mooshoo was standard and I always kinda like this dish where ever i go, and there's a lot of consistency in how it's made surprizingly. Shredded cabbage, black woodear mushroom, egg, bean sprout, pork and these papery wrapper tortillas. the sesame beef was not good, even for my wife who normally likes the Amecian-chinese type of food. We left most of it on the platter and they felt bad and offered to replace the dish at the end for a to go order. Well, i ordered the szhchuan eggplant and sadly it as more sweet than spicy. I was really hoping for garlic-black bean sauce egg plant like mom would make. And the appetizers were all pretty passable junk. So if compelled to eat here again, I'd probably stick with their black bean chicken with veggies or that twicecooked pork but that's probably the extent of the menu worth repeating, even for 5.99 Just down the road, there's another Szchuan place to try...

good, wonderful and great! :) This place is a simple, classic family owned restaurant. The manager who greets you as you walk in has been the same for years and always has a smile. The food is wonderful and prices are fair. Their hot and sour soup is delicious and what I have had from their menu has always been fresh and tasty. The staff is friendly and will always make sure you have enough water ;) a must stop by if you are in the mood for chinese

When I used to work close by, The Imperial Garden was my favorite place to lunch. Not only was the food terrific, but they take a personal interest to make sure you were served well. It was natural then, when clients came to town that I would often treat them to a great Chinese lunch. When these clients returned they would always request that we visit again. Last week I was working close by and made sure I stopped for lunch again. All I can say the food was better than I remembered. My favorite lunch - Gen. Tso's Chicken

I went to lunch for a few of us and I wanted Chinese food. Well I was having a hard time finding something on the menu that had a good mix. Nothing comes with chowmein it's a side dish so that odd. I finally got 3 things. I didn't feel the prices were very good but I wanted some Chinese food. Well big mistake. Nobody enjoyed a single item. The side of chowmein for $5.95 looked as bad as it tasted. The small portion of teriyaki chicken was pretty chewy. The appetizer plate was terrible. The BBQ pork looked odd colored and the shrimp tasted only like cooking oil no shrimp flavor at all. The egg roll I spit out the first bite and went waste entirely. The crab puff was the best of everything but you can't fill 3 people up on 3 crab puffs. I wouldn't waste a dollar on that food. I bet homeless starving people would rather pass that eat this disgusting food.

We live nearby and ate here a half dozen times. Too often there was something wrong with our food. Twice the pineapple in the sweet and sour was fermented. The rice seemed cheap. Reminded me of minute rice. The dishes were never better than average and the service so-so. We aren't coming back. Sorry.

At most a 3 star restaurant which I am very disappointed about, as I have yet to find a good satisfying Chinese food restaurant in the Portland area. The decor is pleasant (love the light fixtures) but very pinkish (everything is practically a shade of pink). The food however, is lacking in flavor. We tried the Kung pao and General Tso's. The only things I personally enjoyed was the Crab puffs and the tea. Seriously, the crab puffs were great. If you decide to pass up this place, still get a to-go order of those!

I'm in shock that this place gets 4 stars on yelp . In no way could this restaurant ever be mistaken for 3 stars or even 2 . Microwaved , tough , heavy sauce Chinese food . Absolutely disgusting .

We have eaten at Imperial Garden twice with so-so results. The food is bland. Fried shrimp was ok but we found the service very pleasant. I wanted so much to love this place.

I saw all of the good reviews and thought I would give it a try... It was soo bad that I couldn't eat it! The sweet and sour pork tasted like ketchup sauce.. Even the rice was not good! I'm not sure how you can mess up rice but it happened.. Definitely will NOT go back..

My hubby and I drive by this place every day but were always afraid to go in because, from the outside, it looks horrible. One of those places that you'll get bad service, terrible food, and a night in the bathroom. HOWEVER, we finally figured, what the hell? Stopped in. Inside decor is heavily outdated. Servers were nice but really busy. Checked out the menu. Really great sounding entrees for really good prices. We both ordered off the special dinner menu. With our entree, we also got soup, an eggroll, rice, and a crab puff. The food was really GOOD. My Mandarin chicken was tangy but not overpowering and the eggroll was amazing. The rice was meh. Service was really fast! We picked up a menu on our way out. We'll be back!

After reading so many positive reviews I decided to try. I wish I had not. Actually, I wish the Imperial Garden had lived up to the positive reviews it received. While it does have some very positive aspects it does not out weigh the negatives. I feel badly about giving this place two stars. Do not expect actual Chinese food here. There are times I actually WANT Americanized Chinese food. I like fried pork and shrimp. To be honest I like just about anything in a really good batter and fried. The lunch specials, the only menu we received, was pretty limited. A single two sided laminated sheet. Though, the prices were incredibly cheap. I got the Sweet & Sour Shrimp for $6.75 and my Partner-In-Dine got the Chinese Vegetables for $5.95. Each meal comes with a couple of nicely presented friend Won ton wrappers, yum, a very decent egg roll, and white rice with a few peas and carrots, and choice of soup. I had Egg Drop (some say Egg Flower) soup. The soup was VERY good. It was full of thin yellow sheets of whipped egg, several substantial chunks of Tofu, and pork, and peas (adds color) and HOT. Temperature hot not spicy. Before we had even had a chance to get through our soups our meals came out. My shrimp were fried PERFECTLY. They were well butterflied in a lovely not too thick batter and crisp. The shrimp were fully cooked inside while the batter was crispy outside. Now, sadly here is the downside. The sweet and sour sauce covering these shrimp was too vinegary. It over powered the sweet. I almost imagine this was a canned sauce the chefs added a special touch to. It wasn't terrible. But, it was not really great either. The sauce pretty much ruined the shrimp. A combined sweet and sour and hot mustard mixture dipping sauce was presented as well. While the color composition and decorative touch are pretty I much prefer they be separate. Sometimes I want just the hot mustard and sometimes just the sweet and sour. I prefer to be able to mix them as I like. The real problem here though, was that both had a metallic side note. It was almost as if both were just on the verge but, not yet quite having gone bad. It is this sauce issue that forces me to give such a negative review. I am usually OK with asking a server to take improperly cooked or unordered food back. I did not feel it would be worth it. Every sauce was different. The sweet and sour on my shrimp was a different color, and intensity as the one for dipping. And well, the hot mustard was hot mustard. My Partner-In-Dine was satisfied with her meal. The vegetables were American and not Chinese. You know, broccoli, carrots, a few water chestnuts thrown in for that "Chinese" title to be correct. Peas and sugar snap pea pods, too. They were cooked perfectly. Not mushy and not UNcooked. Thankfully, their was no sauce on them. Now, the bathrooms. In my view a restaurant can be made or broken on the state of their bathrooms. The Women's bathroom was tiny. The hallway into it was only and I am being literal here wide enough to open the door. Not an entire inch wider. At the end of this short hall turn 90 degrees to see two narrow stall doors. I imagine getting a wheel chair or scooter in there would be impossible. Even a walker would take a Houdini to make it work. To resolve that the Men's bathroom doubles as the Men's/uni-sex disabled bathroom (which, I did not check out.) The Women's bathroom stall I used had the toilet cleaning brush sitting exposed in its base in the back corner. There was a sheet of toilet paper clinging to it. Uhg. The toilet has the water come into it through a wall pipe not an existing tank. The flat area of the toilet where the metal pipe runs through it was nearly black. It looked as if that part had never been cleaned or so lightly that it just doesn't count. The single sink was fine. But, in this day and age I was surprised to see the manual feed towel roller. You know, the kind where you pull on the towel and new clean towel comes out of the dispenser while, ostensibly, the used section gets rolled back up into the dispenser. I don't like these because, I cannot always be sure that the little bit of what looks like unused towel is REALLY unused. Maybe I have just gotten to be too much of a germiphobe. I do appreciate thaving no TV anywhere in the place. I really hate the distraction and the noise. I come into a restaurant or even bar and grill for the food. Usually, with a friend or more who I expect to be able to hear over the foreground noise. 'Cause that is just what it is. Noise. Imperial Garden is celebrating its 30th Year in Milwaukie. I can only hope they fix their sauces and clean their toilets. Because, the underlying food is really quite good.

This was my second try at liking Imperial Garden. What a disgusting mess I brought home to my family and friends. We ordered $86 worth of food and the only half way good thing was the fried shrimp (the batter was good, but there was way too much of it....2 bites with shrimp, 2 bites without. First off, I was told 15-20 minutes to pick up. When I got there I saw 3 boxes with food containers in them, incomplete orders. One of them turned out to be mine. I have a feeling that the reason a lot of our food was so bad was because it had been sitting in a container on the counter for 30 plus minutes. I waited 30 minutes while they completed my order. Yes, it was a large order, but not complicated. The people that worked on my order were very nice, but did not apologize for the wait. We ordered Sweet & Sour Pork, Sweet & Sour Chilcken, Almond Chicken, Kung Pao Chicken, General Tsao Chicken, Crab Puffs (didn't get them) 2 orders of the Special Chow Mein (one spicy, one not) and fried rice. The sweet and sour sauce had no flavor except a little ketchuppy. All of the deep fried items were soggy and cold (except shrimp, which had a couple of teaspoons of oil at the bottom of the box...yuk) The chow mein that was not spicy, had a wierd taste like rotten cabbage or corn...I could not eat it. Both chow mein dishes were filled with over cooked (possibly frozen) vegetables...the noodles were overcooked so it was just a big pile of mush...horrible! I add sour cream to mild salsa because it is too hot for me and I could eat the Kung pao chicken..it was so bland and not hot at all! The almond chicken on the other hand was just bland with a back lash of heat and it is not suppose to be hot. General Tsao chicken was bland but hot (not sweet and hot) and soggy. Steamed Rice was cold. Fried Rice was not fried, it was just steamed rice with a little egg, peas and carrots added in. Got one crab puff on a combo it was dried out and the filling had been fried out of it. couldn't taste crab. My family and the friends that ate with us will never, and I mean never eat there. again. pao

This is solid Chinese food. I have been going there for over 30 years. The prices are reasonable and the portions are generous. The pot stickers are a great way to start dinner. The Mo Shu Pork is great. For vegetarians, try the Family Style Bean Curd. The Palace Beef is worth a shot. For fried rice, try the Imperial Fried rice. The Imperial Noodles are great. Lastly, the Sechzuan Noodles compliment all dishes. I would recommend this as a quiet place to take friends for decent Chinese food.

I was pleasantly surprised by my experience here. Sometimes when reviews are mixed like this, I'm a little wary to try it out. But I'm nothing if not adventurous when it comes to new Chinese places:) The first Chinese restaurant I ever went to as a kid was the very definition of a hole-in-the wall. But I digress. At Imperial Gardens I received excellent service, huge amounts of very good/fresh food for really cheap, and plenty of leftovers. It really was a great deal and I'm intrigued to try out their other lunch offerings. If only they had egg foo young . . .

How do you say El Cheapo in Mandarin? Anyone? Cantonese, perhaps? This is the GOOD kind of cheap, btw. Imperial Garden is muy afordable! 1 star. They're open late! Indispensable for adult students and other walkers in the night. 1 Star. Service is fast, friendly, and the place is kept spotless! 1 Star. Shrimp-fried rice (my gold standard bearer, for any Asian cuisine. Sure it's arbitrary, but do you have a better, more all-purpose dish in mind?) 1 Star. If there's better Chinese cuisine at any time of the day in all of Milwaukie, I have failed to find it. Mongolian grill has it's own strengths and is similar in price, but really is a different dining experience, and may not be appropriate to compare head to head w/Imperial Garden... Shay shay!

Absolutely the worst service I have ever had. The waitress incorretly brought us our food with 4 different items than what was ordered. Instead of trying to fix the order, they took it away and presented the bill. Dining partner's order was wrong as well, but at least it was edible as the others were not. Very disappointed and will not traffic this establishment again. Don't waste your money - go elsewhere. Deserves zero stars.

I've been trying to find a decent Chinese place in my area but sadly that search will continue. I ordered takeout: For starters, I dished this up 5 minutes after leaving the restaurant and it was barely lukewarm so I knew I was in for a real treat. The Kung Pao lacked in flavor, the General Tso was not spicy and also very bland. The house fried rice was steamed rice with chicken and shrimp thrown in, not "fried" at all. There's nothing special about this place...at least the food is inexpensive.

I actually got a chance to sit down and eat here with my family and the food was great! We ordered Imperial fried rice, salt and pepper squid, hot n sour soup and another dish I forgot. The service was quick, food was fresh and the portions were generous. We didn't eat all of the food and had to take it to go but had it for dinner later! They have picked up a regular customer!

This place gets 5 stars because they always work hard to accommodate my food allergy (and my girlfriend's multiple food allergies). On top of that, their food is delicious, and you can eat for cheap. What more can you ask for?

  • Sandra W.

We hit this place on a Sunday night. It wasn't bad, but it wasn't that great either. It is very inexpensive. The General Tso's chicken was ok but not great like we've had on the east coast. All of the other dishes were just average Americanized Chinese fare. It did not make any of us sick the next day, so that's a plus.

This place is the best Chinese restaurant I've visited in the Portland area. The manager and wait staff are always cheerful and efficient. My wife and I can testify that the Mongolian Beef and the General Tso's Chicken are the best we've ever eaten, and the hot and sour soup is just as good, very flavorful and robust. I even like the tea, and I'm not a huge fan of tea ordinarily! The portions are almost too generous; we always waddle out groaning with pleasure. The prices are very reasonable, perhaps even a bargain. Pass up the numerous buffet establishments next time, and enjoy a real dining experience.

My boyfriend and I come here when we are craving Chinese :) well for me it's the complimentary tea ( so good it doesn't even need sugar). The lunch is extremely cheap and they give you a large amount. The people are polite and always at your table to refill..maybe a little too much. I was not into my meal the second time the chen looked odd and I didn't like is the sauce. I went and the only thing i don't like is the sweet and sour soup, my boyfriend loves it though.

I went there with three other people last night, which was a Friday, around 8pm. We were promptly seated when we walked in the door. The service throughout the dinner was excellent. We ordered one of the family dinners which comes with a plate of appetizers and each person gets to choose one dish. We each also ordered a drink. They were strong! Big plus there! When the dishes got there they were nice a large, and would easily feed the 4 of us. When we were done we had leftover food and the waitress kindly put them into to-go boxes for us. We left very happy and full!

We have eaten here twice now and the food has been delicious! My husband ordered the duck and raved about the sauce that came on the side. Crispy eggplant is my favorite...the first tiem we ate here they ran out of eggplant (that is why they didn't receive 5 stars), but the second time, they not only had it, but prepared it with the sauce of my choice. It was sooooo good!

Chinese Cuisine

The popularity of Chinese food in America can be adjudicated by the appearance of China Town in many major cities in the United State of America. The popular trend of ordering or opting for Chinese take away food isn't unknown in America. Chinese take away food comes to rescue when you're too tired from work or too exhausted to cook. No one can resist the temptation of eating spicy noodles, shrimp, chicken, beef or pork cooked in the sweet and spicy sauce. The cooking method of authentic Chinese food is a lot different compared to what is served in America.

Generally, Chinese use dark meat small bones and organs to cook dishes but this changes when you are eating American-Chinese fusion food prepared using white boneless meat cooked with broccoli, carrots and onions. Back in China, the food is less spicy and oily as they favor steaming and braising method for cooking the most popular dishes. So, if you have a taste for authentic Chinese food, then try finding a real Chinese restaurant in the city. You can also try the most popular fusion Chinese food like Pecking Duck, Chicken Feet, Hot Pot, Shrimp Dumpling Soup, Mapo Tofu, Wontons, Chop Suey, Egg Rolls and not to forget Fortune Cookies.

There are not many restaurants in America serving authentic Chinese food. A little research on Restaurant Listings directory can help you locate the best Chinese restaurants in the city. Chinese cuisine is continuously evolving, and you can find a variety of dishes categorized as the food for lactose intolerant, gluten intolerant, vegan, vegetarian, and diabetic friendly. So, if you have a group of friends with different taste patterns, save the hassle and visit the nearest Chinese restaurant in your city.
