Great lunch spot in Hillsboro. They are a local butcher shop as well, and the meat is fresh and tasty. I got the pulled pork sandwich, which was excellent. Friends got the Reuben and the Turkey Avacoado and Bacon sandwiches which were top notch as well.

Finally got to go and really liked it. Ate lunch about 2. Ordered the Italian stallion sando and a side of elk chili. Not a big chili person but that chili was great. Sando was fantastic also. They put an olive tapanade of some kind on about 4 different cold cuts on a big ciabatta bun. Excellent. Will be back for sure.

I've only been to the cafe side of the business. I live very close by and have stopped in for lunch a few times. They offer some filling sandwiches and other lunch-type food that has always been tasty and pretty fairly priced. The lower rating is due to their Frickin' Fried Chicken deal offered on Fridays. I was really excited about picking this up and trying it, since their other cafe food has been pretty good. However, it was kind of disappointing. You don't get a whole lot for the price. I love some greasy fried chicken, but in addition to that you get some greasy pasta salad and some greasy rolls. It was a bit much for me. I hope it was an isolated event, but some of our chicken was not fully cooked. This place is not bad by any means - it's a nice spot to go for lunch. Just look out for that chicken.

Hmmm the cafe. Came in a Sunday afternoon. Were out of the muffaletta, so my husband wouldn't pick anything else. Asked for a half a grinder, "oh, we don't do half a grinder" well your menu says different. We ask, can we just get salami and cheese for our kids? "Oh we can't do that" Well, you have salami as a choice in your Italian stallion sandwich. "Oh, well it comes wrapped together" ummmm, preeeety sure salami is a separate meat from pepperoni and prosciutto. Finally they acquiesce to make a salami cheese sandwich. Oh, out of lettuce too. The sandwich WAS delicious. But probably will be long time before we try again

This review is for the cafe only!!! This was my first trip in. I went in expecting smoked meats , as in BBQ. I was sadly mistaken. I looked at the menu and realized the only BBQ was the pulled pork sandwich. I came in looking for BBQ so that's what I ordered. But $8 for a sandwich only, this must be a good sandwich. Now I am kinda picky when it comes to bbq. I asked the lady at the counter if the sauce was tomato or vinegar based and she said both. Huh? She did tell me the Cole slaw was made with vinegar not mayo. Cool. Took about 20 min to get the food, not bad, and all the sandwiches are made to order. Second disappointment. The meat did not taste all that fresh. It was really mushy and did not have that pulled feel or texture and the sauce was way to sweet. Flavor was just OK. I will probably be back, but to the butcher side.

My boyfriend and I saw this place while taking the back roads to Forest Park for a hike. It looked pretty cool and when I saw the pics and menu, I really wanted to give it a try. During our hike we debated where to eat and my boyfriend--a lover of all sandwiches--voted for here. I didn't argue. Wow. I told him "I'm so glad we came here instead." I got the Turkey Bacon Avocado and it was huge!! I could tell just by walking in it would be delicious. The smell outside was captivating. Bread was so soft and fresh. Meat was smoked, cut, and cooked to perfection. The bacon was fatty and salty. Don't even get me started on the cranberry mustard! So potent and spicy. Mmm As we drive away my boyfriend said: "I think that's the best Ruben I've ever had." And he has tried TONS! 5 stars. I can't wait to try breakfast.
(5)Stan S.
Holy Batman! Yelp comes through yet again! Was down the street visiting a client and checked Yelp to see what was close and highly rated for lunch. Of course, this place came up and I now have a favorite place to eat in Hillsboro. I had the Reuben and it was awesome. I will definitely be back many more times to try other their other menu offerings as they ALL looked great (am I the only one that checks out what others are eating?) The only thing I can't figure out is why haven't I heard about this place sooner!?

I found TMP almost by accident. I was at happy hour with my buddy at ABV (see my review on this) and some weird lady at the bar kept going on and on about how all the meat at ABV comes from the Meating Place. She wouldn't shut up about it so after we tabbed out, we were like 'shit its pretty close, lets check it out'. That was the right thing to do! Ive been back here like 3 times. The cold cuts and smoked sausages are BANGIN. Everything is fresh, top quality and seasoned perfect. Oh and all the meat is sourced locally. I don't give 2 shits about carbon footprints, sustainability, fair trade or any other feel good do nothing buzzwords. What I do care about is quality, and the fact that because I live in Oregon, I want to support Oregonians. Period. We have some of the best food on the planet so why wouldn't you want to support that? *end rant* Ive tried the hot pepperoni, smoked turkey, and the summer sausage. All of these are excellent...but its the bologna that is one of the big surprises. Apparenty, this is the real deal, legit Italian style bologna. It looks like salami and tastes like a mix of regular bologna and cotto salami. VERY good! The only small complaint is that TMP only seems to have one or 2 varieties of fresh sausage. Its past bbqing season if like me, you don't have a covered deck. So hopefully that selection will expand in spring. BUT, lets not discount the pre smoked, ready to eat sausages! The spicy Hungarian and the beer hound are my favorites! Good thing the staff is friendly...they WILL be seeing more of me!
(5)Don C.
Best sandwich in town. The turkey, Bacon and Avocado is fantastic. The meat is the best! Wish I would have known they had such great sandwiches before now!

I have been waiting to write my review for a few visits now to make sure the awesomeness wasn't just a one time fluke. It wasn't. The Cafe side: Staff has been friendly, warm, skilled, and prompt. We've tried different things and come at different times of the day. One day we were there they had run out of the hash to make the burritos, they still made us awesome burritos and went with our vague please make them delicious request- and delivered. I haven't had a chance to try their other breakfast items because I keep coming back to that breakfast burrito! The Italian Stallion and French Dip were also very good. I do go knowing that they may be out of something, and to check the white board for any daily specials or updates on things. I've yet to walk away hungry or dissatisfied of what I've eaten. The Butcher Shop Side: Again, staff has been friendly, even when busy. They weren't pressuring when we've wanted to take time to look over and decide on items. The dog food has been approved by dogs of our house holds. We've tried a few different sausages, the chicken portobello is the current favorite. I also like the local spices they offer, reasonable prices for those as well. With their location, selection, and friendly staff, we'll keep coming back!

Update a year and a month later. Today we decided to stop by for a sandwich at the Cafe next door to the The Meating Place. I ordered the Turkey Bacon and Avocado Sandwich which was $9.50, a buck more than it was when Janet posted a photo of the menu on 12/13. I also noticed all of the sandwiches have increased in price since Janet took that menu photo. The Italian Stallion went up 2 bucks. The sandwiches may have been worth the price they used to charge, but not the prices they currently charge. The sandwich is not worth $9.50, someone is making a TON of money; it was about $4.00 at the most in ingredients. It was OK, nothing special really, sort of bland in my opinion except for the Cranberry Mustard which was about all I could taste. It was OK, but certainly not exceptional. One other note, they were not all the friendly, the guy who wrapped up my half sandwich was, but other than that, not Customer Service focused. Ohh, and the chairs are uncomfortable as hell, they lean backwards so you have to perch on the edge to eat. After lunch we went next door to the Butcher, and they still don't carry grass fed beef? Why oh why? I guess when they do get it it is from a local farm. This is 3 times we have tried and they have not had any in stock. Their prices are insanely high, I mean truly insane. I will continue to shop at Ponderosa Provisioners and get truly grass fed and finished beef for a reasonable price. I wish them all the luck in the world but I am a smart shopper! NOTE: I ate the other half of my sandwich today (threw away the bread) and they do put a hearty amount of meat on the sandwich, and they do NOT do the most annoying thing which is pile it all in the middle, props for that.

When our recently vegetarian 11 year old kid says " can we go to get my favorite smoked turkey?" She specifically means here. We have been coming in for several months now and we like this little outpost of protein in our neighborhood. The people are nice, totally helpful, and they have products that are in line with our values around local, sustainable, etc. Most importantly everything tastes yummy. We've tried: Smoked salmon Smoked turkey Canadian bacon Regular and peppered bacon Bbq babyback smoked ribs ( spicy and smoky yum) Pulled pork Pork shoulder roast Chicken sausages- portabello or cheddar Twice baked potatoes ( with bacon on top) Pork stew meat ( they cut a roast for me) They have lots of choices of beef cuts, usually poultry, occasionally salmon. There are often several already prepped (bbq sauced, marinated or stuffed) items you can take home to pop in oven or on the grill yourself. They have buns, sauces, eggs, and dog food. I saw a cop come in for a beef jerky snack one day. The jerky looks great. It's a little more expensive, sure. My family will typically eat meatless meals several nights a week from our csa, so it's worth it to us to spend a bit on the meals where we do have meat. Its better for our health and for the earth. And its nice to feel good about what you feed your family. One of the psychiatrists I work with told me his wife got him a sandwich here and " it was the best turkey sandwich I've ever eaten." They make sandwiches to go on weekdays around lunchtime only and bbq on weekends and its been so awesome and people have responded so well that they're opening a little cafe next door. They plan to serve breakfast. Yes ! This is a great place. Support it. You won't be sorry.

I really should wait to try more things before leaving a review. I know I should. I also should visit the shop myself before leaving a review. I know, I know. But I'm so excited! My husband came home with some bacon from The Meating Place last week and it changed my life! Ok, so I'm being a little dramatic ;-) Seriously, though, it's great to have a real butcher shop close to home. Hubby speaks positively about the shopping experience and I can vouch for the quality of the bacon. If they do bacon this well, the rest has to be amazing, too. Ooh...happy dance!!! Prices will prevent this from being the source for daily meat consumption, but it will certainly serve for adding some variety from time to time and for special occasions.
(5)Kim N.
I am very happy with the quality of their steaks. Love it so much we used to buy steaks here every weekend. However, it is very expensive and if you dont ask them to de-bone your steak before they weight it then you have to pay for bone.
(4)Ryan S.
Amazing bacon. Amazing. Besides regular pork belly bacon they have a rasher bacon, cut from the loin, which is extremely lean if you prefer that. They also have many cuts of grass-fed beef, some of which are dry-aged on premises. Ground beef options include a beef-and-bacon combo which truly creates the ultimate burger patty, not to be missed. For the sake of time/space I won't detail the other excellent offerings which include many sausages, poultry, jerkey, and prepared dishes (twice-baked potatoes, barbecued babybacks, etc), and occasional elk. If you don't eat meat, or your grocery budget is very limited, you won't feel the same way about this place as I do. If on the other hand you get excited about the idea of a truck decorated fender-to-fender as a giant slice of bacon (notice a theme?) then you'll leave here with a smile on your face. Enjoy.
(5)Jesy B.
Nice to "meat" you Meating Place (yeah I'm clever, thanks for noticing!). I found this place through Yelp while deciding it was time to try out a butcher instead of just buying crap at the grocery store. We came here to get some steaks to cook up and probably spent a good five minutes just wandering around and staring at all of the selections. Just steak alone...yup you can find just about whatever. We just went with some top sirloin and as we walked to the register we couldn't resist getting the pepperoni sticks calling our name. The prices are extremely reasonable for fresh, sustainable and local meat! Also worth the slightly out of the way trip. I'll be back for more of the pepperoni, to try that awesome looking bacon and of course get more meat!
(4)Sean A.
I am happy each time I can spend a little extra money on food. All the pork offerings we have tried have been awesome. Not to mention the sausages. Good selection of in house creations. They have their own style and we enjoy it. The place smells like heaven each time I go. Plan to spend a bit more, but trust it will be worth it. The staff is super helpful and management is always happy to assist. Love the place. I'm happy it's nearby.
(5)Joe P.
Wow, these are great sandwiches and while we didn't buy yet at the butcher shop adjacent to the restaurant, we checked the selection and it looks great. The cranberry-mustard I got with my sandwich was tasty, and the bbq wrap and soup was also delicious (and we have leftovers, since very filling).
(5)Shane R.
Awesome joint! Went to get some breakfast at 1pm, even though their breakfast hours were way past they hooked us up!! Can't wait to come back!
(5)Kerri L.
While working today, I decided just to get out and have a salad at McDonald's (only thing around within walkable distance on lunch break). Not great, I know. As I get closer to McD's, I look across the street, and lo and behold is a funny little "strip mall" that has quite a bit of charm because it's built in the same style of the trading posts you see in the old Hollywood Western movies (and the indoor decor of the cafe echoed in a subtle way that feeling). I love stumbling on places like this and went over to snoop around. There's an antique/vintage store, insurance agency, Pilates studio, and of all things The Meating Place Cafe. Not quite believing my stumbling luck (and luck at not having to go to McD's), I decided to have a look at the menu. They had me at Smoked Turkey, Avocado, and Bacon Sandwich with chipotle aioli and lettuce and tomatoes on sourdough which I immediately ordered. Kudos to this cafe for having printed menus on hand to refer to along with mounted menus hung up not too high. Wow, be prepared for this sandwich's size, the size of two sandwiches, so I ate half and brought the other half home. The combination of all the flavors and textures was outstanding (smoky, creamy, salty, crunchy, heat, soudough) and the quality excellent. I was very taken with the people behind the counter with their combination of hospitality and great service. They remember customer names and even remember customer favorite orders. It's a small-ish space, very clean and not pretentious at all, but it felt comfortable even when crowded at noon with a mix of all kinds of different people. It felt very, very much like a restaurant you'd find in a small town, or if you want comparison to a TV show, a feeling like the classic Cheers sitcom (where everybody knows your name). Janet M. mentioned in her review from last September that The Meating Place planned to start offering breakfast and that promise had been kept. Today, the excellent serving staff mentioned Amaretto French Toast and described their corned beef hash. I really have to return and try the breakfast a different day because I was sorely tempted to order those too. I didn't have time time to visit next door at the butcher shop, but whether you stumble on the place and snoop around or drive out here solely for the purpose of visiting the restaurant or butcher shop, enjoy. It is very worthwhile. I know you will return just like I will.
(5)Jessi B.
We love the Meating Place and have been going to shop since day one. Staff is so friendly, the jerky and pepperonis are soooo delicious. Went in the other day and had the Pulled Pork Sandwich and it was simply amazing. I am a bit picky as I owned a restaurant myself and we had a top notch pulled pork sandwich ;) trust me you will not be disappointed. I have heard from friends that the elk burger is delicious also...
(5)Amy B.
Arrived 15 minutes before the store closed. I was looking for some awesome peppered bacon, but the staff had nearly packed everything away and was apparently too distracted to sell me what I asked. I very clearly told three employees what I was after, yet still somehow arrived home with a half a pound of peppered steak. If you're going to be open till 6 on Sundays, be prepared to actually serve customers until 6. This was my first impression of the shop and I doubt I will go back for a similar experience.
(1)Bryan D.
My review is for the Cafe only. My companion ordered half a turkey/bacon/avocado sandwich with soup and said it was OK, but not a great deli sandwich. Cost $7.50. I ordered a cheese & veggie sandwich, which threw them for a loop. At that point I should have known better. They charged me $11 and the sandwich was small, with just the same amount of cheese that was on the turkey sandwich. I had the hoagie roll, which was ok, but not great bread. I still can't get over that it was $11. I've happily paid more for a sandwich, such as Kornblatt's delicious vegetarian reuben $12 (which also includes chips or potato salad) and is very satisfying. The Meeting Place Cafe was lackluster and expensive.
(2)Amy L.
Went in after reading reviews to pick up some lamb chops for date night. Needless to say the staff was very friendly, shop looks very clean. Large assortment of fresh cuts of meats and sausages. I love supporting local buchershops. The lamb chops were all grass fed very tender cuts for a little less per pound than if I went and bought at whole foods. We had the most wonderful dinner with the meat from here. I would love to come here again to try their other cuts.
(5)Rebecca W.
I don't hunt, so the chances of me getting elk meat, outside from begging my hunting friends to sell me some, was slim....that is until I found The Meating Place. Elk meat is sold in small quantities here, usually in ground form. It is pricey, as it pretty much everything here, but really worth it. The smoked turkey is outstanding. I buy a pound of that when I visit this shop and it is usually gone with a day to a day and a half. It is the best! The bacon we got was about a $1 a slice. Wowza! But, it was the best bacon we ever ate. So there you have it. I could go on and on about all the meat here. I have purchased chicken, pork and sausage. It was all high quality meat, most of it locally and organically raised. The Meating place also sell great quality sauces and has a small deli open during most days where you can order a sandwich. Get the smoked turkey! If you buy your meat here, you'll walk out with a much lighter wallet, but you know you are getting the best quality meat, and it's local! Can't beat that.
(5)Elisa S.
Great service and great quality meats! They were fast and friendly. I love that their chicken and cow meat is grass fed.
(5)Jim P.
They butchered a pig for is, the bacon, ham, sausage and chops have been great! Easy to work with , very friendly and have us good guidance on cuts. I like many butchers in Portland but this one will be added as a new favorite!
(5)William S.
Most items in the cafe and on the butcher side are still very good---with the exception of the prepared ribs. We've tried them twice and been twice disappointed. They are supposedly "smoked" but don't taste like it. And both times the meat has been tough and stringy. MP needs to up their game on this one.
(3)Laura T.
So far, everything I've bought here has been outstanding. That has been: A whole chicken, which was pretty small but roasted up wonderfully. I consider myself a disappointment of a cook, but the bird made it seem like I'm a pro-- all juicy and beautiful in a glass baking dish surrounded by red potatoes and carrots and onions.... Bacon. (Bacon. Really it's hard to go wrong with bacon, but the pepper flavor was really good and the thickness of slices was perfect) Deli Ham. So, so good. And not that expensive for actual real ham (doesn't taste anything like the slimy salty stuff you get out of the plastic packets at the grocery store). Bone-in pork loin chops. I made them last night and my boyfriend said they were the best pork chops he's ever had in his life. Again, I'm not that great of a cook and all I seasoned them with were salt, pepper, olive oil, and a bit of rosemary and thyme from the patio. Beef jerky. It's so good!!! It's chewy but not dry and the flavor is awesome! Jerky is like the perfect hiking food, lightweight and share-able with the dog in a pinch (except there's no way I'm actually sharing with him unless we're lost and starving). I was really excited about the milk and eggs they sell here, as well, but they are also very expensive. But you get what you pay for. It's going to have to be once-in-a-while treat, although I would love to get all of our meat, eggs, and milk here.
(5)Lynn A.
I spend a lot of money here to sample many of their beautiful smoked sausages, the first two where indelible. They are VERY spicy and absolute no flavor, they destroyed the elk and beer hound sausage. It's SAD to say Johnsonville is far superior. You are no Edelweiss or Otto's!!! I can't wait to consume the others???? If wish I had a dog to feed the miserable crap!!! The poor dog. P.S. I hope you are not a German because you are a disgrace.
(1)John W.
Awesome breakfast burrito.outstanding..try the bunny burrito! Spinach/tomato- WOW! Large servings, taking half home to save for later unless my teenager finds it in the frig. Must hide it!
(4)Binicorn S.
Semi friendly staff, great presentation of their meat, but they don't carry liver. You shouldn't even be able to call yourself a butcher if you don't sell liver.
(2)Juan F.
The consideration of having my paycheck diverted to this place just so I could stop in and have breakfast every morning. The stag is extremely positive and friendly. Not to mention the butcher shop next door. This is like a country kitchen. OMG best bacon. Amazing breakfast burritos pastrami and a good cup of coffee (longbottoms ) must make this a regular stomping ground.
(5)Ellen L.
Like you're sitting down in Grandma's kitchen, served with bacon, bacon, and more bacon. We came for breakfast and I got the least carnivorous option, blueberry pancakes with bacon bits inside. There was bacon and eggs on the side. As a free bonus, the host made some "dippers" as per Pinterest for my young daughter. They are bacon strips dipped in pancake batter, served with maple syrup for dipping. The friendliness is above and beyond here. The food is filling and country, home style. You won't find anything without meat except maybe the coffee, which wasn't my favorite roaster (local Longbottom's). If they cleaned up the decor (a little greasy, maybe part of the charm for some?) and brewed a tastier bean, I'd give them five stars.
(4)Marie E.
Amazing! Went in for Sunday breakfast and ordered the breakfast burrito with chorizo gravy. The best breakfast burrito i have ever had. Tons of flavor, meat was juicy, and the gravy was delicious. Definitely coming back.
(5)L P.
The Meating Place Cafe has redeemed themselves by inviting me back with the promise of a free Reuben sandwich for myself, and a second free one for a friend. This was after I recently posted a one star review because my first sandwich at the MPC was below par and inedible. Annie, thank you for doing the right thing and inviting me back to try your handmade Reuben again. This time it had the correct fat to lean ratio one expects on a Reuben sandwich. The marble rye is awesome! Now I'm convinced you can make a good sandwich worth $9, and I will tell my friends about the Meat Market Cafe and the wonderful employees who made a perfect lunch for me. Thanks for the pickles!
(5)Yelp H.
good food but....ordered take out (ruben and chowder) over the phone at 11:45, i asked the woman over the phone how long it would take and she said 10 mins. got there 12, paid 12:01 and waited until 12:30 twiddling my thumbs writing this review until they realized my order was on the side of their register. they gave it to me, with no apology or 2nd thoughts. total order was $16 for a whole ruben and clam chowder. super steep price by all accounts....im going to whole foods from now on. I can get a whole smoked chicken for $6 and a huge hot deli plate and drink for $10 with just as high quality ingredients and speciality sandwiches as the Meating Place Cafe offers. this place is hyped but really nothing special considering all options we can choose from in the near vicinity. $9.50 for the Ruben and $7 for the Chowder...its not like u cant find good sandwiches and soup with amazing ingredients elsewhere for the PRICE these guys charge and the SERVICE that you have to put up with.
(1)Rick S.
The Meating Place cafe is an amazing sandwich shop! I have come here quite often for lunch in the past year. They keep really busy during lunch time, so be patient and maybe call ahead to order. Despite the hectic lunch time madness, I find the counter staff to be quite pleasant and up beat. Their sandwiches are unique. The Italian stallion and turkey club are some of my favorites. What take the the prize, is the Friday special. The braised beef philly cheese steak! It is the tastiest thing I have ever had! They offer some incredible sides as well. Elk chili and Mac and cheese.
(5)Laura S.
I love this place, it's right down the street from my work, so it's perfect for lunch out as a treat. It's a little more expensive (their cafe) than the other options around, but for the quality you're getting, it's so worth it. I was able to go to the butcher shop as well as get a sandwich and soup to go and make it back to work with plenty of time to spare. Their butcher shop is reasonably priced for what it offers (local fresh meats) and the slow aged steaks I got were amazing (my husband loved them for our anniversary). I highly recommend this place. Their Rueben is to die for and I think I got their turkey stew or turkey pot pie soup and was blown away by it.
(4)Greg T.
Food (that I have had) is OK. Service is the worst I have ever seen anywhere. I can't count the number of times I have placed an order only to be told they were SOLD OUT of whatever I was ordering. Seriously, this seems to happen nearly every day! They often sell out about 1 PM (the height of the lunch hour), they know this happens often, and they don't care enough to do anything about it. I have expressed my frustrations about it many times but the staff just seems to make a joke about it every time. I can't believe service could be so bad anywhere but this is very repeatable time and time again. I gave up and will never waste my time with this place again. (If it is this poorly managed to my face I can only wonder how things are behind the scenes.)
(1)Kathy H.
Clean store, friendly staff. Bought Painted Hills hanger steak- it's precut, and butterflied. I marinated for just 30 minutes for a quick grilled meal. Very good and $10 lb. I also bought hamburger with bacon $7.50 lb. the hamburger is ground chuck. I use 80% chuck &20% sirloin when I grind, so I'll compare. Grandkids ate $19 worth of pepperoni sticks, big meaty yummy and declared them great. I found short ribs.. Yeah!!!!!! And now have 4lbs for the freezer. I will stop here again after my Costco run. The Meating Place " meats" my needs.....j Made hamburgers with the chuck/ bacon. Hands down delicious plus much cheaper than grinding my own. Moist meaty goodness. I'm going back and filling the freezer!!
(4)Nathan S.
I met my family for lunch here and had the Philly Cheese steak which was absolutely incredible and would get 5 stars from me. I need to return more to try other items and see their service before i give a 5 star rating, but it wouldn't surprise me to rate them that highly! Oh and the gouda mac n cheese cold salad is great as well
(4)Jaben C.
I went in here too see if the place was worth it. I drive past on the freeway, but don't drive up this road much. I tried a few sausages. The meat area felt like it was all pre cut and I prefer when it's cut to order. The maple sausages were way too sweet. Not bad, but not good. The paprika sausage that wasn't spicy on the other hand was quite tasty. I'd get more of those for sure... The Hungarian sausages were quite tasty. Spicy and paprika filled. I'd definitely go back for more of those. In the end I think I need to go again, but I'm not driving out of my way in excitement.
(3)David B.
Heaven between two buns. I was hankering for a pulled pork sandwich & I got well more than I bargained for. The behemoth was served with crunchy pickles, sweet onions & tangy coleslaw-in a word AMAZING. Service was quick as the cafe is connected to the butcher shop, freshness at it's peak,

I'm incredibly lucky to live so close to this place. I spend A LOT of money here. The most important things you should know are: 1) It's in a strange location, off Cornelius Pass Road, farther west than most Portland Proper peeps like to travel. 2) There are two parts to The Meating Place; The Cafe and The Butcher Shop. First the Butcher Shop: The smell of smoked meat envelopes you as you enter. Inside you'll find local sauces, rubs, canned tuna, and salami atop the cases of beautifully displayed meat You'll need to keep in mind that the meat here is high quality, locally farmed and harvested, it is processed with care, and it's extremely fresh. So naturally prices are higher than your average grocery store, but honestly the prices are pretty reasonable for most things. The steaks are a bit spendy ($10-25ish/lb), but they are premium quality and so fresh! Try a flat iron for about $10/lb, it's a hard to find cut, super tender and easy to cook (doesn't need anything fancy done to it). They have wonderful ground chuck, and their ground beef/bacon combo (those run around $6-7/lb) makes the most delicious burgers! I buy their freshly ground sausage (all kinds), it's so flavorful and tender. I can't say more than YUM when it comes to their sausages, I've had nearly all of them and they are smoked and delicious, the beer hound is my fave (they average a little under $2 a piece). You'll also find displayed thick cut bacon, rasher bacon, Summer sausage (both flavors), smoked turkey (the best I've ever had), REAL bologna (you don't even know what this means until you try it), and the pepperoni sticks are bursting with smoky flavor. If you're looking for something different they have rabbit, lamb, and elk. Your dog isn't left out either! They sell raw dog food in 3 sizes, smoked bones, and pig ears. On to the cafe: They make breakfast burritos and sandwiches. They also have blueberry pancakes with bits of bacon in them, which are served next to eggs and a hand made fresh ground sausage patty. I've had nearly every sandwich on their menu, and a few specials. My advice is: if they have anything with tri-tip in it for the special, GET IT. The turkey bacon avocado sandwich is the best one I've had, period. There is so much house smoked turkey and thick cut bacon sandwiched between toasted sourdough and chipotle mayo, GET THIS. And, the pulled pork sandwich, you can't go wrong. Best one on the West side of the river! Lunch can be a little spendy by the time you buy chips and a drink, but it's totally worth it! They always offer a daily soup and are super accommodating to special requests. If you don't have much time on your lunch break, I suggest you call ahead 30 mins for pick up. Seating is limited and they are always busy. They cafes hours are limited, I think they close at 3pm. I hope they expand someday and serve dinner! :)

I mean holy delish. Stopped by this place on complete accident & will put it on my lunch rotation. I absolutely loved my French dip sandwich & my friend was drooling over her pulled pork. Try this place out but note they are only open to 3pm and not open everyday.

This is a review for The Meating Place Cafe only. I LOVE their pulled pork sandwiches. It is definitely the best pulled pork in the area, and it's definitely a contender for best in the Portland area. The sandwich comes topped with homemade coleslaw, pickles, and onions, which really add to the flavor profile. --- Negatives: They don't offer a 1/2 size pulled pork sandwich (like they do with a lot of their other sandwiches), so I'm forced to each the entire delicious ginormous sandwich (probably more than I should be eating at once). They also don't really have very many side options. There are some bags of chips available, and there is usually a soup on the menu, but that's about it. That being said, the sandwiches are HUGE so you don't really necessarily need a side to fill up at lunch after the sandwich. --- Since the pulled pork sandwich was the first thing that I ordered, I unfortunately don't have anything to say about anything else on their menu due to the fact that I can't bring myself to order anything else when I get the chance to eat here. There is seating outside in an enclosed (during colder weather) porch that has some heat lamps. Inside seating is pretty much outdoor-type metal furniture. This cafe isn't super swanky, but they do serve quality food, which is the most important part. Everyone is really friendly. They usually have specials written on a whiteboard by the cash register. Fountain drinks are available for purchase. Prices are EXTREMELY reasonable.

Something magical happened this summer. The meat counter at Pastaworks on SE Hawthorme was temporarily stocked by the good folks from The Meating Place. And it was exquisite. * Beer dogs with casings so snappish you would swear (if you didn't know better) your dog was sassing you with each bite. * Rasher bacon that elevated an otherwise ordinary breakfast egg sandwich to gourmet status with only a couple minutes of extra cooking time. * Steaks cut to your preferred thickness and trimmed so perfectly you need only place on the grill and pray you don't screw it up. * Beef jerky so fragrant the neighborhood dogs would follow you home. * Smoked lunch meat so fresh and delicious you could never look at a typical deli case again. And then, in a flash, it was gone. Gone! Except not really. The Meating Place is still out there in Hillsboro - Cornelius Pass Road - which my phone promised me really wasn't *that* far away. So I recently made the trek out to this far away land of Hillsboro, and I found the Mecca that is The Meating Place, and it was more than exquisite. Does exquisite have a superlative? If so, it was that. For sure it was that. Plus it is so much bigger than the Pastaworks location. Look, I'm the last person who would willingly suggest anyone hop onto 26 in order to track down food, but The Meating Place is the real deal, and it is absolutely worth the trip. Bring a cooler and stock up.

The best butcher shop in Portland. The quality and variety of meat is spectacular. I was looking for a Brazilian picanha, did not know how that cut would be called in English, Googled it, found the name in English and there, they found it for me. I had the best BBQ I have had in years. The place is clean, no blood on floor or the typical butcher shop smell. Is very clean and it can be seen how much they care for their business.

When I drop into this place, I tend to think of it as some sort of luxury shop, which it really is not. Obviously, comparing this to a standard market is silly. The more I shop and eat, the more I am back to the line of thinking that if you going to eat a particular thing, go to the shop that specialize in this thing. Hence, the Meating Shop. Alright, where would I put the pricing? I'd say a little less than New Seasons, a little more than supers. I am no fan of NS's meat department and I have never been. As much as I want to; mostly because it is so much closer to our house. Buying in a conventional supermarket is a false economy anyway. You end up buying the quantity they sell, it is of poorer quality and few butchers know anything about the meat as a butcher shop will. Have I spoke of the deli case at Meating? I should. We've been having fun over there. If the impeccably clean display cases have smear marks on it, you know I have been here just before you. It is just the two of us, so this is my shopping strategy: I pick up some fresh meat, some smoked meat, a little deli action (though I still have yet to get into the sandwiches) and then scrounge around in the frozen case. Give that a try, if you have not. This last trip I brought home some of their Mortadella, a Cordon Bleu and from the frosty case some Irish Sausages. At this point, I will assume that we all know that what they sell is what they make in prepared meats. The mortadella is an interesting thing. It is pre sliced, like, say, Oscar Meyer; thicker. It is not like a conventional mortadella. The pork fat is broken up finer, like Oscar's cotto salame, with good sized pistachio within it. It is quite good if you take it on its own terms, but as I said, it is not like a conventional mortadella. Live on the edge! Give it a try! The Chicken Cordon Bleu is very good. If you have only had these lovely things out of a supermarket freezer, you will never go back to them and you will moan eating these. Remember these are fresh and they do not like to sit in the refrigerator. Make these the dinner after you have eaten the fresh meat that you bought. Ask them for their instructions for cooking them, or anything else they sell. They are eager to help. I forgot to, but I know that you can pop these in a 350 oven and leave them alone for 20 or 30 minutes. I like to brown them up on a fairly hot iron pan and then toss them in the oven covered, cook them for a little less time, not that it makes any real matter one way or another. I took the Irish sausages that I saw on a whim. I like something frozen; it comes in handy, especially these, since they are vacuum packed. Preparing this only calls for boiling water and a sense of smell to judge when they are done. 'Sides I wanted to stare at these some. Irish...hmmm. I have a Scottish last name, though I am mostly Danish and English. In any case, I know all too well that the farther north your people come from, the worse the cuisine is. And my mother and grandmother specialized in anything made with Campbell's cream soup. So, I figured that anything from the Green Isles would probably taste like crap. No, no, these were wonderful! I would suggest that you enjoy these bad boys for a breakfast meat, though we had them for dinner. Pork meat with seasonings--I will guess is mace, nutmeg, sage (?) and white pepper. Just boil them in the plastic vacuum wrap for 15 minutes or so and then pan fry them for a little brown. Ours gave off quite a lot of moisture; the sausage was very juicy. I'd suggest frying up some small potatoes cut and add that extra juice. OK. End of cooking class and strategies for buying. Now that I have you all hopped up, grab the car keys. Go!

I stand by my previous review but have to add some information about the Cafe side. I'm going to give you specifics, so you don't have to learn the hard way like I did. OK, so The Meating Place and The Meating Place Cafe are sort of one business but not. In the fall, they started their "Frickin' Fried Chicken" meals on Fridays. I went to the butcher shop side and was behind a person that was buying just about everything in the store. When it was finally my turn, I asked for the frickin' fried chicken meal only to be told that I had to go over to the cafe side for that. They said that if both places weren't busy, they'd usually just yell over the order, but at that moment, they were swamped. I went over to the cafe side and saw people that had been behind me already waiting for their order. It was my turn and I was told that they were out of chicken. A few other people walked in and were told the same thing. Now, the frickin' fried chicken is Fridays from 4-7, but I went at around 5:00 and they were out. I stuck around a bit to ask a few questions (seriously, with a review in mind) and was told that if I was willing to wait about 45 minutes, they had two more chickens and would sell me one of them. I agreed. I asked if they did call ahead and was told no, that it was just first come, first served. Two people walked in and said they'd called in an order and just picked it up, so I'm not sure what the deal is on that. (I tried calling in the next week and was told they don't take orders, maybe it's just for "regulars"). Anyway, the meal was great. We had the whole bird. The meals are whole bird, 4 biscuits, one side and four drinks for $24, or a half bird, 2 biscuits, one side, and two drinks. I think the half bird is $17, but don't quote me on that, I've never bought the half. I also can't guarantee that they'll cost the same. I think that since meals change, the prices might change too. They'll have that week's price posted. The sides have been different each time. We've had cole slaw, an orzo salad, and mac & cheese. Follow them on facebook and they'll tell you what sides they're selling that day. Also, it's not always chicken (they've had fried fish, and chicken fried steak), so if you're interested, follow them. One of the times I had paid and not given the drinks, so I had to ask. Another time, I was asked if I wanted them to include the biscuits. I said yes and they asked if I wanted all four. I wasn't going to eat the whole meal myself, and I had already paid for it, so yeah, I wanted the four drinks and the four biscuits that had said were included in the meal package. It's not a big deal, just more of a heads up. Now you know everything you need to know, you just need to taste it. It's pretty worth it.

So many interesting combinations here and it's absolutely delicious. You get a massive sandwich for your money so it's a great deal. I have the roast beef on marbled rye with spicy horse radish sauce and man was it HOT but SO good. :) definitely need to come again to try their other stuff.
(5)Tiffany T.
Had the chicken enchilada soup today. It was full of good stuff, spicy enough to soothe my sour throat and delicious. The kind woman behind the counter seeing that I had a cold gave me my bowl of soup immediately which was appreciated. My husband had a pulled pork sandwich which has some of the smokiest tender meat in town and has been known to sell out. We also picked up some smoked bones for our dogs (who were thrilled to get their paws on them) and a some good looking kielbasa which I can't wait to try. Great selection. Carnivores welcome. Yum.

I was so excited when I saw this business open up just a mile from my house. I wanted to add my support to an independent business. One that was using local products. I have been in 6 times since they opened, most recently was today. I have really tried to like this place, but it must just be that I am not their ideal customer. I typically shop in the evenings, after work. To shop at The Meating place, I leave work early to get there before they close. Twice I have gotten in 10 minutes before they close, so the lovely displays of meat are all covered. And the greeting is terse, I get the message that I am holding them up. So I just either ordered quickly or if told they didn't have what I was looking for and getting the look.....I fled. This could have turned into a sale with just a suggestion of an alternative. And I would not have had such long spells between visit. Once before the cafe was open I stopped in on a Saturday, they were really busy, I took a number and had my order filled. Good day so far, then I decided to order sandwiches...bad idea. I put in my order at the counter, I waited and waited...people came and went. Once all the orders had been filled, the women behind the counter asked if she could help me. I explained I was waiting for my sandwich order. She said all the orders had been filled, I gave her my name and she found that it had not been put up to be made. They made my sandwiches, no apologies for to me for having waited so long. So I didn't comeback until this month. Two bad experiences again and I think I will part ways with The Meating Place. Which is so sad as having a neighborhood butcher is a thing of beauty. A place where customers are greeted warmly, the butcher is happy to suggest cuts of meat. Tell you about new items, or particularly good choices for the day. Where they are interested in having your business. Two stars are for, using local products. And quality of some of the products we have tried.

This is only of the butcher shop, I haven't visited the cafe yet. There's a butcher shop in Redding CA that I visit whenever I'm there visiting family. They are immensely helpful and have great service. The Meating Place reminds me of that place in layout and operations and extremely friendly staff. They will cut, trim, package, you name it - and the meat. THE MEAT. Their pork chops are to die for, the steaks sliced perfectly, the bacon is amazing. We got ribs there a couple of months ago and they were seriously the best ribs I've ever had. You do pay more but you also get a higher quality of meat. A friend of ours butchered a cow and they processed the meat perfectly (we got half). My only complaint would be their hours can be inconsistent, but it's a small family business (I think) operating in a not really well-trafficked area for food (their competition is the McD's across the street or the Fred Meyer a few miles away). For those who are paleo, they offer bones for your stock! I cheat and get one of the spicy pepperoni sticks, they are my crack.
(5)Ryan P.
Wow.....finally made it to this well rated eatery. All I can say is....BRAVO!! I chose the pastrami sammy for my first experience,..... super delish! Perfectly balanced uber tender cured brisket inside a delectable vessel of soft marble rye, TI dressing and not too tangy kraut. I'll most definitely be back! Unpretentious meat market/sandwich shop...nicely done!!
(5)Tony M.
the pricing is jsut off. I know they are a great sandwich but 26 for lunch for two is a bit much....

The butcher shop is terrific--helpful and friendly, and always on point. After a year and a half of trying to support the restaurant as the hours and days and menu items constantly fluctuated, we packed it in--showing up on Sunday and being told they only serve breakfast till 11 (their website didn't specify when breakfast stopped and lunch began) was the last straw. There's been no rhyme or reason to when they open, when they close, what hours they serve what foods, etc. Pity, as the few times we had breakfast sandwiches and a pancake meal there, they were wonderful, but it's just not worth the hassle and disappointment. (I hasten to add: the meat market is spectacular, and the quality of meat excellent and the service outstanding. This review is ONLY of the restaurant experience.)

Annexed to the greatest butcher on the west side this cafe is simply awesome. Stopped in for a turkey bacon avocado sandwich for my first visit. Friendly service and the sandwich was top notch. Thank you!

First, I want to be clear on this point: the butcher shop is great, the cafe is awful!!! Been shopping at the butcher shop since it opened and have been very pleased. Meats are great, sausages yummy and the jerky is amazing. Oh, I forgot to mention my dog loves the "smokey bones", so my husband and I decided to give the cafe a try. Service is great and fast! We arrived Sunday at 9:15 AM and the cafe opened at 9. There was only one car in the lot and 1 family in the cafe(4 people). We walked up to the counter to look at the menu and place our orders, however instead of receiving a "good morning, I'll be right with you", we got "Hi, it's gonna be a while!" Not a positive first impression. Really? With only one other table of 4 in the cafe??? Well, we replied "No problem", helped ourselves to our coffee, which I asked if there was more cream because the dispenser was empty. The cook/waitress replied "We're out, I have some whole milk if you want that? At 9:30AM??? We took our seats after placing our order and sipped our coffee. After 20 minutes and watching a few more patrons arrive, my husband went to refil our cups and found the carafe empty. The cook/waitress. Said more was brewing and to check back in about 10 minutes. He checked twice after we got our meal and the carafe was out both times and again was told its brewing. Finally, after close to an hour after we arrived, we received our order. The pancakes and bacon were good(we saw the Bisquick box), but not outstanding. The eggs were overlooked, not over easy! The sandwich was fair. It could have used more vinaigrette, but the meats from the butcher shop were good. Overall, the meal was OK, nothing special. The service, if you want to call it that was horrible. While, there we saw 3 different groups leave after sitting down. Just a bad day? In the future, I'll stick with just the butcher shop and go elsewhere for breakfast.

Their Bacon infused ground beef for burgers is phenomenal, Pepperoni sticks are the best I've ever had, can't eat a store bought one now. Beef Jerky is great, summer sausage, the list goes on. Oh and the Chicken cordon bleu is great as well

The sign was posted on Wednesday and Friday. It was not a matter of "feeling mislead" as you put it. I was mislead. As of Monday, December 8th your webpage is misleading as well.
(3)Brian W.
Boy do I love The Meating Place! They have a great selection of whatever you like. Huge steaks, flavorful ground beef, bacon so thick, I think it was about 8 slices per pound. Their beef jerky is excellent, and the pepperoni sticks too. I recently got some twice baked potatoes there. Just as good as all their other products. I think this is the best meat market around and I've tried most of the others in the area.

The 3.5 star cume is just about PERFECT for this place. On the one hand, their smoke shop, which has been up and running for over 5 years now, produces some most excellent elk, italian, and basque/andalusian sausages. Mmmmmmmm! On the other hand, the butcher shoppe proper, which has been open a little over a month now, and features daily sandwich specials, got mixed reviews from us. The pulled pork was tender but a bit too sweet for my taste, and cheap, white flour bun didn't augment things appreciably, by any means. Then their "brisket"-wich looked, smelled and tasted conspicuously like it was pot roast stew, ladled out of a crockpot into a hoagie roll. The briny, uncut cauliflowers and carrot sections were the dead giveaway that this was a left-over stew sandwich. It was by no means inedible, but nothing I'd be in any rush to order again, any time soon. We'll continue to patronize this place and check out their menu offerings from time to time. We wish them ongoing success!

Wow freaking good! I frequent both Garterners, Ottos, and butcher boys and let me tell you The Meating Place holds their own! So glad we finally have a quality butcher on the Westside. So the family and I meet in the parking lot every year for father's day, to head up to pixie mt. Boy was I surprised to see this place. I bought a few different pepperoni sticks (by far these were way better here than at the butchers I mentioned above). So after we were done at the mt. I made the whole family go back to check it out. So that evening I put it to the test and grilled a bacon wrapped ribeye and a couple brauts. Well let's just say I no longer need to go anywhere else, keep up the good work guys and you will have a customer for life. Oh, the wife really liked their smoked turkey too.
(5)sharrie r.
I am looking for the best Beef cuts in hIllsboro area without going to Gartners. I want grass fed, hopefully. Whole Foods beef is tough. New Season's is nothing special, not much better, not worth the money . Albertson' Feed Meyer and hanks,mi won't talk about. I just baked a pork chop from Meating Place that was in my freezer from Aug 1 2014, that was not acceptable. Not sure if freezing went wrong, my cooking. I want a good and tender roast for Christmas.

One of the things I have always looked for, unlike many people that want their own personal neighborhood bar, is a neighborhood meat market. With my culinary background, I have grown weary of the meat from your typical grocery store. There's just something about meat that has been sitting in plastic bags stewing in their own blood and juices that just is not that appetizing to me. Add in the myriad assortment of growth hormones, antibiotics, vitamins and cannibal diets that your typical meat products come with and it is just sickening. Fortunately, The Meating Place has come back to the neighborhood. Featuring Laney Farms and Painted Hills beef, quality pork and chicken products, house smoked and cured charcuterie products, and Tony is a very, VERY happy man. To the uninformed, their prices might seem a little high, but I can assure you, the meat is worth every penny. What is your family worth? Would you rather serve them frankencow meat, or meat that has been raised right? Grass fed beef is the way to go, TRUST me. Spend the extra money (that is on par if not cheaper than Whole Foods or New Seasons), and support the local farmers and local, family owned shops. These folks know their meat, and it shows.
(5)Neri G.
I have been waiting for a place like this!!! My hubby and I came here last week and didn't realize it was their grand opening celebration. We tried their sausages they were grilling and they were awesome! We came back today to get our weekly meats for dinner and some sausages. If you like things spicy, you need to try the Hungarian sausage. They have plenty of local meats to pick from and if they don't have it on display, they will cut it for you. You also need to try their pepperoni sticks and jerky. The staff are super friendly and helpful. This is the only place we will be getting our meats. If you haven't checked it out yet, you need to go.
(5)Alexis C.
I had a the Painted Hills Roast Beef sandwich with my choice of fixings (Lettuce, onions and spicy aioli) on sourdough. It was very tasty! I thought that it could use maybe just one more slice of roast beef but other than that I really enjoyed it. I had a bite of the rueben and oh man, I've never really liked ruebens but this one was excellent. Next time I want to try the french dip!
(4)Lynn P.
It's a breakfast desert, north of 26. You're generally relegated to the breakfast version of a big box store. Well hang on to your bacon - the Meating Place is awesome for breakfast. I was already a huge fan of this place for lunch, but the smallish breakfast menu put me off a bit. But then I considered my breakfast food habits, and this place goes with what it knows. Meat. Amazing pancakes with blueberries and bacon in the batter, side of bacon and eggs. DELISH. And way more than my daughter and I could eat when sharing the plate. This place will seriously satisfy some teenage, carnivore breakfast needs. Definitely going back to try the breakfast burrito that everyone else seemed to be ordering.

Went to the Meating Place Cafe this afternoon for the first time after months of recommendations. I had the Reuben, wife had the Logger Elk burger special. Both were phenomenal. There was a line when we entered, but the staff was friendly, quick, and efficient. Our food was made to order and brought to our table in record time. The kitchen is open and you feel cozy and at home with all the bustling around, just like a sandwich shop should feel. With all of that my wife and I were still able to carry on conversation and had no trouble with excessive noise. The kitchen was run like a well oiled machine, and orders were consistently prepared and delivered no matter how busy they were. Plenty of seating inside and out. The meat is all locally grown and supplied by the butcher shop next door. You can taste the freshness and quality, and the sandwiches were made to compliment the meat, not overwhelm it. We left very satisfied and it was one of the most affordable lunches we have had in a while. I can not recommend this place enough. We will definitely be going back for more. We heard many positive reviews about the clam chowder, but did not try it. Definitely on a future visit.
(5)Michael L.
Awesome butcher with a great selection of meats. Wandered in here after having an amazing elk burger at their cafe. The burger had their bacon on it so I had to come in and get some and check out their other products. I picked up several types of sausages that I haven't tried yet, but I can say their bacon is amazing. I will come back for sure to try out their steaks as well as their raw dog food.
(5)Carissa G.
The cafe is amazing! I had the elk chili and plan to take some home for my boyfriend. I definitely recommend this place! Can't wait to bring some friends here!
(5)Paul K.
meat lovers unite! This place has house smoked jerky and pepperoni sticks which I come in for often. They have nice cuts of aged beef for steaks and roasts. Local, organic (if you want). Good stuff! You'll spend a little bit more, but you get what you pay for. Great local butcher shop.
(5)Bobby D.
Yes, a good place to get some quality locally raised meat. The owner been doin it a long time and trained his staff well. Very friendly atmosphere and lots of choices. Smoked meats, sausages (they have a few very spicy ones), and beef. I tried the roast beef, some of the sausages, and the bologna. Can't get any better than this. This is a very unique place. Yes, New Seasons is very good and does make some tasty sausage etc, but not quite as good - very close but not the same.
(5)David P.
Stopped in to pick up some short ribs for dinner, they look fantastic! I just finished browning them, deglazing the pan to get up all the drippings! They are going in the oven for a low and slow braise. I am very impressed with the service, neat and clean atmosphere and selection of meat. I will let ya know how the ribs turn out. I picked up some dogs, ground chuck and some sexy looking pork chops. This will be a great location for the upcoming grilling season. I was really impressed by the enthusiasm the owner showed in his products. The staff was really busy and they just opened. We were served quickly and the packages were bagged by the cutest little assistant in town.

This place could be awesome... And I hope it makes a few changes to improve. Hillsboro sorely needs a good breakfast place. This just isn't it...yet? We ate here for breakfast on a Sunday in July. Here's our feedback for the owners. Pros: 1. Good bacon. That is important! 2. The blueberries in the pancakes were really good. 3. The staff are really working hard. And they are friendly. Cons: 1. The pancakes were made from (what tastes like) a mix. And not a great one. Yuk. 2. The bacon in the pancakes is a novel idea- but it was limp and squishy in execution. I think it needs to be cooked longer to get really crispy and broken into smaller pieces. 3. My eggs (over-medium) were overcooked, and the yolks were broken and solidifying on the plate before they even brought it out. 4. My husband's sausage was cold on the plate, and his scrambled eggs were not "light and fluffy," but only partially scrambled and somewhat congealed. 5. The ordering happens at the counter, and the servers bring out your food to the table. Why is that a problem? Because you are asked to add a tip during ordering - before you have experienced the service - AND because (it appeared that) customers were supposed to bus their own tables. The staff were all working hard, and they deserve a good tip - but the expectation of that up front is off putting. 6. As a Yelper, I check out restaurants before going. But their hours of operation are listed differently, and incorrectly on Yelp AND their own website (the meat store vs. the cafe - YOU, as the customer have to know which is which, it is not clear - and it should be). I had to call to verify they were open for breakfast on a Sunday before 11am. This should be a simple fix. To the owners of The Meating Place Cafe - please improve your processes and execution! I will happily sing your praises and gripe about the crowds that will inevitably come!

I wasn't sure what to expect from this place, other than the rather steep prices, which my co-workers had warned me about. I ordered the Ruben sandwich. It came to over 10 bucks after tip so my expectations were fairly high. The sandwich itself tasted ok, the pastrami tasted more like hot dogs than legit pastrami and it was cut way too thick. Pastrami has a lot of fat content and you really need to slice it thin, otherwise its a chewy mess. On top of it all it took over fifteen minutes to get my food to go.
(2)Sharon M.
I went in to get some filets for a special dinner, and the guy behind the counter was so helpful. I got a whole tenderloin, and he cut this into steak size pieces. He also trimmed off most of the fat, and he charged me a little less since I bought the whole tenderloin. Thank you. I will be coming back.
(4)Kayrin P.
Can't recommend them enough! Great service and wonderful, wonderful meat. So glad they are minutes away. I have sampled their steaks, pork loin and chops, whole smoked turkey and of course, their amazing bacon. It is wonderful to have a place like this so close! Keep it up guys!
(5)Ed J.
Best place to buy meat in the hillsboro area. A little on the spendy side, but you get what you pay for when it comes to quality meat and it's worth every penny in my book.
(5)CLB P.
All I can say is "wow". I can't believe we have such a high quality butcher shop in the neighborhood. Living north of Hillsboro means you have to drive to shop, and for some of us who don't like a lot of the gross meat products that show up in grocery stores, that meant tracking down a good vendor at a farmer's market or driving out to Gartners. I've been in here 5-6 times now and every time has been a great experience. The pork products and extremely high quality and their sausages are really great. My dogs love their bones and everything looks very clean. Also, they are extremely friendly. One day I walked in there with a container of marinade because I was on my way to a party and wanted to pick something that would fit. They cut the meat and packed it into my container for me. Great service every time. I love this place.
(5)Lo W.
So excited about this place. I stumbled across it while I was driving aimlessly out Corn Pass and I'm glad I stopped. I drooled all over the meat case then selected a few things to test out. We got the deli sliced smoked turkey, peppered bacon (which is about 1/4" thick), and a pepperoni stick of each flavor (regular, teriyaki and spicy). I definitely plan on going back and getting some jerky, some steaks, and sample some of their many sausages. Everything we bought was wonderful. Finding this place made my day - I love a really good old school meat market.

Not quite in the same league as Gartner's in NE, but ok if you live in the area and don't want to drive as far.

Great local business. Meat varieties are fantastic. Quality is out of this world. Knowledge of the staff is high level. Go try this place, you won't be sorry!

Their meat is amazing! The bacon and jerky is to die for. I will never buy meat anywhere else.

Stopped in for a sandwich, waited for a few minutes, no one took my order so I walked out. Three people behind the counter, but only one was allowed to take orders and she was making a sandwich. I would suggest that they either allow the other people behind the counter to help take orders, or figure out how to multi task a bit better and make their sandwiches a bit faster. It's a nice looking place, very clean, good selection, and the people were nice enough. I get my own grass fed beef half a cow at a time (split with some other families) so I can't speak about their prices. All in all, I think I'll stick with Gartners and Old Country Sausage for the other stuff.

I'm so happy to have found a butcher on the west side! If you haven't tried them out yet, I highly recommend it. They sell several varieties of local meat. I tried three different varieties of their sausages and they were all amazing! They're already precooked, so I put them on the grill for a few minutes. I love that the casing "snaps" when you bite into it, and the meat inside is so juicy and flavorful. I'm originally from WI, so I am not a rookie when it comes to eating sausages/brats. These are honestly some of the best I've ever had. I also bought a grass fed tenderloin. One word. Amazeballs. The meat was so tender and juicy. Also one of the best steaks I've had! Their smoked turkey is also fantastic. I bought sliced roast beef as well as the bacon ground beef. I haven't tried either yet, but I am looking forward to it. If you have a dog, they also sell raw dog food. I could go on and on about this place, but you really need to try it for yourself. I know I'm looking forward to going back again!

Good meat market for the west side. Pretty spendy, but you get what you pay for. We purchased 4 new york strips and a rub and it ran us about 60 bucks. Now it was really delicious, however we paid about what we would pay at a restaurant.
