Just thought I'd take a moment out to thank and commend Myrna S. (36) for her decision to advise us on the size of our meals. Had we had our way, we would have had ordered way tooooooo much food. At this point we are full. To compensate we are ordering fried ice cream...yummy. I did not care for the coating but the ice cream was good quality and real whip. Century Salad SUPER nachos with meat huge! Fried ice cream Honestly the service is why I chose to write this today. Thank you Myrna for good old fashioned service!

We use to come to Hale's all the time when I was a kid. Their quality has definitely gone downhill since then. Their omelets are still great, I do recommend those. However, today I ordered the corned beef hash, expecting the same kind of thing I have gotten before at other restaurants. It came, and right away I knew something was off. Instead of coming like a skillet hash of potatoes and chunks of corned beef, it was a solid, fried lump on the plate. Uh oh. I broke it up with my fork, and unfortunately it looked a lot like dog food to me. Took one bite and about spit it out, it was quite obvious they took a CAN of some sort of minced corned beef hash and warmed it up on the grill for a few minutes. Really, really gross. When the waitress originally came by and asked if everything was okay, I hadn't tasted it yet. Then she disappeared for quite a while. When we finally complained, she said that if we had "said something earlier, she could have done something about it." At the end of our meal we waited about 10 minutes for her to reappear, then finally asked the hostess to get our waitress. We asked if we could get some sort of a discount, as I didn't take more than a single bite of it. She then lectured me about how "If you don't speak up, nobody can ever make things right" (must've said that at least 3 times) and how "we had put her in a hard spot because now she had to explain to management why she gave us a discount" so she would "see what she could do." She came back to the table with a revised bill, only charging us for the toast and eggs instead of the full meal. Only problem was, the original meal was $9.95, and she charged us $6.50 for 2 eggs and toast. She didn't take even half off of a meal I was too grossed out to eat. I hate writing negative reviews, and I'm all for supporting local businesses, but we will be thinking twice before coming back here again.

I went here for dinner a couple times and it was ok. Most of the dinner stuff i've tried were a bit bland. But their breakfast is really good. I always get Eggs Spartan which is like eggs Benedict, but get the sauce on the side, because you get more and the sauce is great!

Terrible. The green salad was very wet. The rice pilaf was uncle Ben's. The vegetables were cooked and OK. The prime rib was decent and cooked the way I ordered. Overall I will never go back there again. Don't go here unless your taste buds are dead.

Thanks again for a great dinner! It doesn't matter if we're eating in or taking away, the quality is fantastic and consistent. We've been coming here for many many years now and I have never had a problem with the food or the service.

Artichoke dip was runny and filled with an over abundance of garlic. Great sandwich lost flavor when covered in so much cheese. And to top that, ladies bathroom (both stalls) no toilet paper. Major disappointment.

6/15, There is no way to contact the Owners to complain and this place is a cash cow for them, they don't give a shit about how their Customers are treated. I highly doubt they read the reviews. Terrible treatment by their "new" Hostess last weekend. OK this is for BREAKFAST only which is excellent. We dropped by for dinner the other night, and for dinner it is a solid 1 star, barely. I don't know why I keep giving them another chance for lunch and dinner, because it is truly awful, unless you enjoy bland flavorless foods. I cannot understand how they can slam dunk breakfast and suck at everything else. So for dinner I ordered their Broasted Chicken, it came out and was super crispy but also overdone and super bland, no seasoning whatsoever, not even salt helped it. It came with some gross ass steamed brocolli and a few mini carrots again no flavor whatsoever. The best part of my meal was the baked potato. My husband got the Prime Rib dinner, it was tasty itself, however the mashed potatoes with country gravy were so gross I had a bite and made a face, he ate one bite and said NO way, so they sat. He also was graced with the terrible veggies. His favorite part of his dinner was the Au Jus for his Prime Rib. Overall gross and a HUGE WASTE OF MONEY.

I have been going here for years for breakfast and it has always been great, from pancakes to omelets they are hard to beat. Weekends can have a wait but it's worth it. They have done a slight update of the place and could do more. If your looking for an affordable good breakfast with no frills then this is the place for you.

WE have lived in this area for years and we have driven past this restaurant everyday at least 4 times a day and this was our first time. We have always been discouraged by the way the restaurant looks on the outside. I'm not sure why but I have always thought this was a bar... lol... any who... I am soooo glad we went here!!! The atmospehere reminds me of Knotts Berry Farm. The service was GREAT TOO... we were told that the wait on a Sunday morning was going to be 20 minutes... No Big Deal.. thats great for a Sunday morning. However, we only had to wait 15 minutes and while we waited we looked at a menu. So by the time we got to our table we had our drinks waiting and we placed our order. The waitress was so friendly and nice. She had a completely full station but she still managed to check on us 4 times and have our water and coffee filled the entire time we were there. The portions were huge as well. My bf and I each got the Bacon and Eggs and we shared a Swedish Pancakes. It was yummy!!! Our meal only cost $30.00 It was very reasonable. We were so full we skipped lunch and had an early dinner. We were in and out in an hour which was GREAT because I had an appointment in Portland. We will for sure be back and maybe even once a week for breakfast :)

As a jersey girl just starting life in the great north west, I miss my grease pit diners. Read the menu online and figured this is one of the closest I can get to my beloved. Well... the good. Staff were GREAT. Reading the reviews, I thought I was going to be in for 'it' (whatever that is). They were very pleasent. I don't see the hate on them. Pancakes were pretty freaking good. Thin and a smidge undercooked with a crispy outside. Just how I like them. The bad. Coffee...come on, there is a great coffee shop at every corner. Rent one if you need. No excuse for mediocre coffee. And the eggs. They were plentiful, but the veggies in my omelet were raw. You should always at least warm your omelet insides before shoving them in. With that said....i may try them again. There is a super cool and dated looking bar with Crack slots that I'd like to spend a few minutes after eating a belly full of pancakes.

My husband and I had dinner at Hales this evening. I ordered the chicken fried steak and it was appalling! The vegetables were limp, cold, and rubbery. The waitress brought me a hamburger meat patty and it wasn't cooked all the way through so that had to be thrown out as well. My husband ordered fish and chips with shrimp and scallops. The F&C tasted like something frozen out of the box. I would not recommend Hales at all and would suggest to those thinking about it, consider the Peppermill in Aloha instead.

I had very poor service here. The waitress was rude when I had a difficult time finding something I wanted on the menu. I will never go there again.

My family and I were lookin for a close place to eat breakfast that had mimosas and bloody Mary's. Dad remembered Hale's was down the way and said it was a great place.... 25 years ago. So we went ahead and tried it out. First second we walk in, the hostess rolled her eyes when we told her we had 7 people in your party-- definitely a turn off to me when someone acts like I'm a bother to the business. Our waitress was amazing though, she was super nice and attentive and really tried her best. I had the corned beef hash, but others got omelettes, chicken fried stake, French toast, and chicken finger basket. I heard the chicken fried stake was good as well as the omelettes, but the corned beef hash wasn't exactly my favorite. My friend said the chicken basket was an okay plate, but the ranch was not good for dinner, but maybe a veggie selection -- aka it was pretty dilly. The bloody Mary's, although I don't like them, dad and grandma said they were delicious. Mom and I had mimosas and I sucked mine down pretty quickly. Overall, the experience was okay, and the food was alright, but I don't think it would be a place that I would choose to go back to.

The breakfast food is excellent. But I just paid $18 for 3 pancakes, coffee, sausage and eggs. The prices here are absolutely ridiculous.

I don't even know where to start. We went there for lunch and wouldn't have gone there if it hadn't been a family get together. The food was terrible, frozen halibut fish n chips, overcooked mushy broccoli/carrots but the creme de la creme of nastiness was my girlfriend's crab melt. Two untoasted english muffins topped with dethawed, old, fishy tasting crab meat then drowned in a cheese-like substance. The complementary salad tasted musty, the canned beets didn't add much. She was physically ill after ingesting the meal, I was pissed off from paying $32 for a meal that I had to choke down because of hunger. The service was friendly although not great attentiveness.

Love their omelets and the spartan sauce is a must. A little pricey for breakfast but worth it. Pancakes are not awesome but the omelets make up for it. They have nice wait staff and a clean restaurant which is very important to me. I did have some lipstick on my coffee mug (not mine) but it was quickly switched out for another. Hales is always consistent and good.

Hale's was awesome as usual. Bacon was bountiful and very yummy. I get the Bacon and eggs with hash browns and sour dough toast. Very good. My wife had the same a German sausage instead. My daughter had the breakfast skillet. We all are filled to the gills. The service was awesome. Our waitress Brandy was very attentive and kind. Thanks Shari's for being no good and letting us choose Hale's!!

I know a lot of people love this place, they are known for their big portions of down homestyle cooking. But there weren't a lot on the menu that appealed to me. I asked if they had a veggie burger, and sadly, they had taken it off the menu, since it didn't sell very well. I ordered pancakes and a side of hashbrowns. I also got an iced tea. My bill came to approximately $12. Kind of spendy. My friend ordered chicken fried steak, eggs, looks like biscuits with gravy on top of pretty much everything. She said her chicken fried steak was a little tough and hard to eat. The waitress asked if she could get her something else. She asked for a slice of ham. The waitress took the whole plate away and brought a brand new plate of food. Which was nice, but seems like an awful waste of food. The seats are really comfortable, the place is really packed. Obviously this place is enjoyed by many. Just not by me.

Hale's is one of those places that I've always driven by and go "Hmm, I should try that place sometime." Well, I finally did try this place. The food is good. It's good ole comfort food. We were here for breakfast. There is a restaurant and lounge. We opted for the lounge considering there looked to a soccer team out for lunch. We thought it was a little pricey. The portions are large though but if you want a side of toast or hashbrowns, you'll have to order that separately. They do have combo options but not for what we wanted. We came here because the boyfriend wanted waffles for breakfast. I read a review that said the bacon waffle was very bacon-y. That sounded perfect for him because there is no such thing as too much bacon for us. The service was poor. Both waitresses seemed very flightily and forgetful. We weren't the only table either. I noticed that the waitress would bring food and forget an item. Five minutes later, she'll come around to check on the tables and remember about the item. Another five or so minutes pass and she comes around with it finally....maybe. We got our food. Everything looked fine and smelled delicious. But no syrup. She tells us she'll bring it right out. She does a circuit around the room, okay, fine. She goes to the back. Ok fine. She comes back out with another table's order. It was another five minutes before she came over. We had to remind her that we were waiting for syrup. She brought it out and laughingly said, I guess by way of apology, "At least the syrup's not cold." Umm...okay, but the rest of the food has gotten cold waiting for this syrup. The bacon waffle didn't disappoint. It was indeed very bacony. I ordered Three pigs in a blanket which is sausage link wrapped in pancake. It came with a side of apple sauce. The food is delicious. I like the lounge. It's comfy. There was a nice fire going, I don't recall if it is real or not. Probably not but it certainly adds to the atomosphere. Restroom is outside, between the restaurant and lounge. Service is lackluster. I would like to come back and try the dinner menu but I don't know if we will venture here again. Hale's is one of those restaurants that you want to try and when you do, there's nothing really spectacular to bring you back again.

Stopped in today to have a drink and watch some football between loads moving. Was just a bit hungry ordered some tots ugh picked one up and grease dripped down my fingers. Told the bartender as we were in the bar, she let us know rudely they are a deep fried food and I had ordered them crispy that's how they're going to be. Her response and attitude was unacceptable. We said we didn't want them and weren't paying for them and she still put them on our bill. When we said something she said I still expect you to pay the rest of your bill. We never refused to pay for what we consumed. Very poor service and attitude. Very poor customer service. And her name was Lee perhaps she should not work with the public. She was being smart assed with the drunken regulars about us not being happy with our order. I had to give a star to post this or I wouldn't have even given 1.

I think it's a 3.5, really. Here's what happened. I had to place my mom in an Alzheimer's facility this week, and after we got her all moved in and eating lunch with the other residents, husband and I took a break. We should eat, he said. Me. I don't want to, really. Sushi? he said, being nice ( he doesn't like sushi so much). Syun? he said. Nah. Really? he says, taken aback, you ALWAYS want sushi... Not today, I said. After he reeled off several other ideas, he said Hales? Hmm. Comfort food. Dark. Old people. Not so happy and chipper. Just right. Ok, I said, picturing an omelet and hash browns or a poached egg. They stop serving breakfast at one on weekdays, BTW. I had a slightly spendy but perfect tuna melt, with perfectly crispy and nicely salted french fries ( dont remind me how many weight watchers points that is, this isn't the time for that) and bottomless brewed iced tea, and it was good. And the server was nice and also good, and husband's club sandwich was good, as were his fries. His lettuce and tomato were nice, and the bacon was perfect. All just fine. Yes, it's outdated, yes many of their food items are a tad overpriced ( tuna melt was $9 and some change, a little much) , but mostly it's adequate. It was a somewhat healing lunch, and we were nourished, and I could go back to the care facility and finish up. So it worked for us. I would say just stay away from anything you think could be frozen, out of a packet, canned, or not fresh. They're pushing their lobster alfredo ( at quite a price) right now.. and you'd know better than to order that in a coffee shop/diner type place, right? come on now.

Great food. Super service. Very attentive staff. They were slammed with a group of 40 soccer kids and we still got our food without undue delay. Portions were not huge but decent and well presented.

Whatever you do, don't order the chicken fried steak or order your hash browns extra crispy. My first and only impression was that the food is horrible. We will never come back. Waitress was nice though, only good thing I can say.

Never again. Our food was cold are wrong, but we never saw our server again until she dropped off the check. At that point we told her it wasn't what we ordered and she tried to argue with us about it. It was ridiculous. Maybe she was having a bad day, but she made them lose a customer forever.

Very friendly staff who goes out of their way to take care of you. The best breakfast items are the omelets, they are simply huge and way more then enough for 2.

Love their corn beef hash breakfast! The bar atmosphere is quiet and comfortable. Staff is friendly and helpful. I have never had a breakfast here I didn't enjoy. A great place to come when you want breakfast at 3pm on a weekday or any day!

Love this place! Best homemade chips, BEST BLUEBERRY PANCAKES!!!!! Love their chilli cheese fries. Great food overall!!! Service is excellent other than one waitress in the bar, named Cindy. She is super rude. Other than that it's wonderful!!!! All other waitresses are pure angels!!!! Especially Lee, she is the Sweetest!!

Sometimes you have too much wine the night before, sometimes you stay up until the wee hours of the morning with your lady friend, sometimes you need something to cut through the damp, dizzying light of noon on a bleary Sunday in the burbs. So you crawl your way into your car and make the foray onto minivan and soccer mom infested TV highway. You brave the left turn into the dangerous Hale's parking lot teaming with oldsters with bad eyesight. They're backing up their giant metal trucks and are poised to crush your tiny import into bits if you misread your turn. Once you make it safely inside, you'll get your fix: a greasy plate of biscuits and gravy, a cheese and bacon omelet, or a bacon waffle and a bloody mary to wash the Sunday blues away.

I'll have to say this, this place is great for drinks and NOTHING else! The service here is horrible, that is what I have noticed that is consistent here. I have given this place many chances and as far as ordering the food and getting it on time.. have never had such luck. They always mess up my order too. I always dine in the lounge where I have almost consistently got bad service. The waitress always ignores me when I want something else etc. Drinks- on the other hand are always good here, as long as you sit at the bar and pay cash up front. I don't mind going in for the booze but yea the service here is just what kills this place. Too bad, some of the food isn't too bad. It had been a long time since I had been here, as I said.. not bad for quick drink or two.. if you want a meal I would seriously reconsider.

Do you know how to perfectly poach an egg? I always cringe when I order a firm poached egg. It means, almost invariably, that I wind up with icky, runny yellow, or almost grey overcooked middle. Blech. But not at Hale's, where they always come out perfectly. FTW. Hale's is a solid hit on weekends. My teenaged boys love the size of the omelettes (The Denver IS the size of Denver), and the pancakes. Also a hit: the hash browns. DO order the bacon - it's thick and perfectly cooked. DON'T order the link sausage. It's just weird. For someone who loves her meats, it was a bummer. The service is good, but guys, be kind to these ladies - they are understaffed and trying really hard. I've seen some snarky people there - there's no need when the servers are trying hard, and maintaining a friendly attitude. Don't be THAT table. Wins: Hash browns. Omelettes bigger than your head. Mmmmm Bacon. Poached Eggs. Friendly servers. Teenaged boy approved. Cons: Understaffed, blechy link sausage, not enough parking.

This place is a dinosaur. A sweet, grandmotherly dinosaur, who wants nothing more than to send you home with a pleased and slightly larger belly. The dinosaur (let's call her Grandma Rex) keeps a harem of mostly young girls at her disposal to run the front of the house, their fresh faces a stark contrast with the worn decor that takes you back to a decade you probably didn't even exist in. And in the kitchen, she keeps the faceless, nameless heroes who have perfected one thing: Omelets. Let's get something uncomfortable out of the way first. I can't give G-Rex five stars, because...*looks around* *whispers*...she never really could manage a good dinner. Bless her heart - she tried. But if I had grown up under her roof, I would have concocted every fake school project imaginable to bike to a friend's house, a friend whose parents boldly experimented with...I dunno...spices? Herbs? In short, dinners here have been uniformly bland, if inoffensive. So breakfast is where it's at here, omelets in particular. These are not delicate foo-foo omelets, topped with a sprig of something green and inedible. These omelets are a mass of egg as big as your face (except for you, sir, with the more petite features) and studded liberally with whatever meats and veggies you choose. If you add bacon, prepare to be pleased: they use thick, hearty chunks from what must have been very fat and happy pigs. You can pair your omelet with toast, potatoes, or the option that makes G-Rex proudest: pancakes. Make sure to ask for the berry syrup. Although G-Rex clucks disapprovingly at my inability to finish the meal, it's nice to take home half of an omelet for a future reunion, and it actually reheats pretty well. So to review: If you find yourself here for dinner, you have two options. Preferably, order your omelet off the breakfast menu. Otherwise, hop on your bike to your friend's house, for a "school project".

Im really glad we stopped in for breakfast. Had the best omelet of my life here. I don't know how they do it, but the egg in the omelet is so fluffy...it's like biting into a cloud.

This place just gets worse and worse. I was there on a Sunday night during dinner hour in the bar which I have returned to occasionally because the atmosphere is rather pleasant. NEVER AGAIN! I had to send my salmon meal back to the kitchen because the fish was spoiled (all 3 people at my table tried it and agreed it was disgusting). After doing this without making a scene the bartender came out of the kitchen yelling at me from across the room "that's our salmon, there's nothing wrong with it!" attracting the attention of what few other customers she had. One person who I was eating with had shrimp and scallops in his dish and he said the scallops were borderline but I think he was afraid to send it back at that point and took most of it home for his cat. She continued to be rude to me in every possible way and EXTREMELY solicitous of the men in my party, I presume because she expected them to pay and therefore leave the tip. In the past I have noted VERY slow service and mediocre food but I have never been yelled at, anywhere for a complaint (which by the way is very rare for me to complain to the server about the food). I noticed that on a day they should have plenty customers there was a noticeable lack of clientele. Something needs to be done by management such as teaching servers the customer is always right and upgrading the food and having a minimum time a person should be seated before being served. And NEVER yell at or argue with a customer! If this can't be addressed than they deserve to loose all their business.

I like the bar there because its one of the few places with a fireplace and It is small with a nice size tv screen. I will not be going back because connected to the back door they constructed an enclosed smoking area. Evidently its also a serving area because staff were going back and forth. Everytime the door opens, which was a lot, the smoke was brought into the bar. I left with a horrible migraine. Disappointing.

I'm not a breakfast kind of guy. I'm the kind of guy that has one (1) cup of coffee for breakfast, along with something as simple as a granola bar. On the weekend, I will have a bowl of cereal, or if I'm REALLY feeling crazy, an Eggo waffle. I live on the edge, right? I know, I'm *XTREME*. There are very rare exceptions to this rule, and overwhelming cravings for a bacon waffle, such as the one served at Hale's, qualifies. I'm not quite sure what turned me on to the idea of a bacon waffle; I can't identify the source. Regardless, once it was mentioned to me I realized I had to have it. It did not disappoint. Nicely cut up pieces of bacon in a modest sized waffle with a bit of butter and some maple syrup - what's not to love? Well, perhaps the price. Around 8 bucks for a standard dinner plate sized waffle, albeit loaded with tasty bacon. A bit rich for me, honestly. A "large" orange juice was an 8 ounce glass, if I'm not mistaken. Also a bit suspect on the side of value. The building's charming. It's... old school. There are easily identifiable regulars here, but don't let that deter you. The service was excellent. It's obvious that many, many cigarettes have been smoked here over the years, but those remnants are fading. The interior of the joint is rustic and charming. I'd pick Hale's over Shari's, Denny's or Biscuits cafe all day long and twice on Sunday. As previously mentioned, though, it's rare indeed for me to attend any kind of significant breakfast in the first place, so take that for what it's worth.

The three-star reviews seems right on. It's perfect hang-over food, big and greasy. I wouldn't suggest ordering anything that requires real skill (you can order a burger or steak rare and it will look the same as the well done), but if you want French toast and bacon, they've got you covered. Some of the staff has been there since the beginning of time and they are lovely, but the younger kids on staff don't really get it... not so good with the customer service. Keep your expectations low and you'll be quite happy...and it's much better than a chain breakfast place.

Horrible service, I've never been kicked out of a restaurant! Ill never go back! Disrespectful! We came in about 1hr before closing time we ate food was ok, no complaints about the food but it wasn't anything special. 15 mins before closing and they keep on coming every 3 mins to ask if we need anything else. And with 5mins left they actually ask us to leave cause they are closing soon. It was pretty rude! Never has happened anywhere else but here.

Doubling down here.. This is for BOTH Hale's Restaurants. The ONLY difference between the two is that the Hillsboro Restaurant has a Full Service Barrrrrr...... Therefore, I was able to get a sufficiently adequate Bloody Mary.. Sooner or later you HAVE to move on to food which our table of 8 eventually did. Good stuff here Maynard, good ALL the way around. As a matter of fact, it was great and so was our server. The same goes for both these qualities at the Oregon City establishment. As usual, a waiting line presages the quality you can expect to experience. You will get GOOD food at a fair price.. BOTH Hale's set the Bench Mark HIGH!! Enjoy..

My family tried this place for breakfast based on reading reviews on Yelp. I have to agree with everyone that the hash browns are cooked to perfection. I wish they were seasoned better, but you can add salt, i just hate to do that. We ordered a couple of omletes. Fantastic and huge. Easily can feed two, (unless you are a hungery logger heading to work). We had an order of bisquits and gravy. It was ground beef and tasted to "beefy' to me. I know it would be better as a sausage gravy. Don't know if they have that. The pancakes were good too. My son loved them. Overall, I'd give this place a thumbs up for breakfast. The service was friendly, but not super fast. It didn't seem to be crazy busy as we were in around 9:30 or so on a weekend, so I would have liked the food a bit quicker, but that's me being picky. I am likely to head here again for another delicious breakfast.

My husband and his sales team have breakfast meeting here about once a monht. He'd never been there on a weekend so we decided to have an adventure. Although the decor is straight from a 1980's soap opera/funeral home, it's also kinda charming. Like stepping back in time or going to Grandma's house. The best thing...the place was CLEAN. The wait staff was plentiful and friendly. The menu was extensive but since we were there for breakfast that's the only page we looked at. I tend to judge a restaurant by it's biscuits and gravy...you can either do it really well or it's just plain awful (IHOP). Hales had great biscuits and gravy. Yummy flavor and just the right size. Maybe I was hungry...I ate the whole thing. The husband only has chicken fried steak at restaurants and he ate all of his too...must have been good. We will put Hales in our A-rotation for breakfast!

This is a large, out dated diner on TV Highway next to Target and Safeway. It is also very pricey for my tastes, especially for dinner. You can find a few lower prices items, but I still have a hard time choosing something from the expanded menu. The service is usually friendly, but often understaffed. They do try to experiment a little with items like a pear and glazed walnut salad, but out of the four times that we have gone there I must say that we have been mostly disappointed. The last and final time that we went we walked out because the waitress was severely overworked and wasn't able to take our order. I might go again for breakfast, but not if I was in a hurry or with small children. Actually I would probably go to the Shari's a block down the road before I went here again. For a burger, I would go to either to the Red Robin next to the Shari's, or drive the five minutes east down TV Hwy to Rachel's Burgers. Honestly, I would drive the fifteen minutes to Beaverton and eat at Black Bear Diner. There, I said it. I want to like this place, old and charming, but it is usually under staffed, over priced, and the food is inconsistent. My experience has included: -a huge omelet that needed heroic assistance from catsup and toast to bypass my gag reflex (yes, I will eat almost anything; I have an irrational fear that the cook will mess with my food if I complain). The hash browns I ate like they were dessert. -a chicken fried steak that was tough, tasted off, and had a hard batter that felt like sand paper to the roof of my mouth. Again, the hash browns were the saving grace. -An appetizer sized pear and glazed pecan salad that was delicious and satisfying, but was $8~9... -Pancakes that were pretty good. I have vague recollections of the first time that we went there. It was actually a fairly good experience with a sandwich (I can't remember which), and this kept us coming back three more times hoping to repeat until this last visit where we walked out. We ended up driving ten minutes away to the Gyro House (205th & Baseline).

We keep coming back to this place; clearly at the wrong time of the day, since all the hosannas seem to be for breakfast. We always leave looking a little shell-shocked (we just paid $35 for mediocre diner food for dinner??) There are so many people lovin' this place--and a scary amount of Elite love it best--aren't we the ones that are supposed to be snots? So, the dinner: I actually love the salad with the julienned beets and the weird sesame wormy things. He had the Mexican chicken soup that tasted like chili with funky corn chips on it. He liked it; I just said, "but it is supposed to be *soup*! It's freaking chili"--as if this somehow supposed to be important. I know, be quiet and go back to your salad, Bob... SO had a half a chicken that seemed pretty Banquet frozen-like to both of us. I had the chicken fried steak on country gravyisque pudding. He liked the baked potato, my mashed were eh. If I shook my plate, my chicken fried steak wiggled on the gravy, which was kind of fun. I don't know. I'm coming back for the breakfast but I'm thinkin' there's something in the water to get y'all to say good things about this place.

If I were to nominate a local place for Robert Irvine's "Restaurant: Impossible", it would be this one. The decor dates from the late '70's - and it's just about as clean as the inside of Grandma's trailer house (filthy carpet; fake plants which are dust-catchers; grubby; sticky booths, grubbier, stickier bathrooms and that 'old lady house' smell). One you engage in some cognitive-dissonance and get past that, you're treated to a menu with about 200 items - most dating from the same era. There are bright spots - they make a solid clam-chowder; their pancakes are good (then again, screwing up pancakes is akin to saying "I can't boil water"). Their 'Eggs Spartan' (someone's take on Eggs Benedict) takes the usual greasy-spoon shortcut and makes the Hollandaise with flour, vegetable stock and a little powdered Hollandaise mix. Steaks are straight-up U.S. Foodservice product; done on a broiler with (predictably) too much garlic salt and pepper - the result is not unlike a barbecued baseball-glove. What they do to lobster tails is criminal. The other night, however, was what made myself and my significant other decide not to come back. We were seated in the 'back room' - a dungeonlike affair with faded photos of woodland on the walls behind faux-window treatments; sconce-lighting on these is the only source of light in the room (unless you count the electric-candles). The 'help' (I use that term loosely) - dithered over writing an order for salad and clam chowder; she brought us our salads, but then began 'Oooh'ing and 'Ahhh'ing over a baby at the next table as a couple with the child was being seated by the hostess. She picked up the kid - diapers and all - and began bouncing and 'talking' to it. I said, "I hope she washes before handling any more food.' (No idea if that happened - but there you have it - one of many health violations at this place, I'm sure). She brought out two bowls of chowder for the couple with the baby. The woman began to pick at hers, and feed it to the baby; other than that, they ignored it. I thought this strange, until our intrepid waitress stopped by our table and said "Well, you sure made that go away! Did you want dessert?" I said, "No - but we'd like our chowder someday." Wide eyed, she began apologizing - then *reached over to the other table and picked up the bowls she'd left there*. "I'm so sorry. I gave it to these people. Do you want these?" She stood there with a vacuous look on her face, as if this were an acceptable solution. (Health violation #2 - but who's counting, right?) "No. We'd like fresh ones, please." About ten minutes later, we got our chowder, along with another raft of apologies. "I just go ga-ga over babies!", was her final excuse. I still have no idea if that chowder was fresh, or just rebowled and nuked for a couple of minutes. Conclusion: We're not going back. You shouldn't, either.

We stopped in for some breakfast on Saturday morning. This was our first visit to Hale's. The decor is super outdated but the staff was friendly and the food was excellent. My husband had the chicken fried steak and I had a sausage waffle. Both dishes were so tasty! My waffle had chunks of sausage cooked inside of it. Yum! My husband's chicken fried steak was one of the best we've had. They put the gravy under the steak instead of on top of it so the meat is still crispy. Genius! This is definitely one of our new favorite breakfast places in the area. We will be back for more!

This is one of our favorite local restaurants. The fillet mignon is amazing. My husband and I like to split the 10 ounce, get our own salad, and the side of broccoli Spartan sauce. The restaurant is nothing to brag about but the bar has a dark setting and comfortable and the kamikazes are delicious.

Solid breakfast place. Ham is IN the waffle batter, nice. Perfect hashbrowns. Sandwiches are filling too, they have an awesome monte cristo and you can dip it in jam or get a hollandaise style sauce with it. Dinner has the typical old diner fare. Their salads are a nice veggie blend with beets on top and crispy sesame sticks. Service has always been good with water always full. This place hasn't change in 40 years and at this point why should it?

A staple in the burbs of Hillsboro forever. This is a great breakfast haunt although they do also happen to serve lunch and dinner. I say it that way because if you come for lunch or dinner you will not see the reason for the 4-star rating. Bacon waffle, excellent. Pancakes, filling and tasty. Omelette's, easy split for two people since they are enormous and come with pancakes or hash browns w/toast. Coffee is plentiful and service is usually on point. If you want a darker and quiet atmosphere for your breakfast, dine in the bar -- no kids there, yes! Lunches are okay but mostly overpriced. The only time we spring for lunch here is if we are hungering for a salad with beets and some of those tasty sesame crouton thingies. The club sandwich is "close" to being a value and... is enough for two especially if you have a salad and/or soup. The soups: hit and miss. Nothing that reflects highly developed culinary skills. Usually just some hot stuff in a bowl to appease their primarily geriatric lunch crowd. Dinners are largely overpriced across the board. Fried chicken is "ok" but easily bested by Popeyes or Albertsons deli. Ham is usually good but sometimes salty. Anything with Spartan Sauce -- avoid unless you have a brick for a palate. It's not disgusting just uninspired. Fish is usually nicely crusted but also usually overcooked. I'll stop here... if it isn't clear yet, make the effort for breakfast and if you are really jonesing for a salad with beets then make a stop for lunch. Bon apetit.

Great service, food is pretty good. The place itself is an old school loung-ey spot. Red plastic chairs and dingy lighting with servers in pink shirts. Food is reasonably priced 8$ for eggs and bacon. The hashbrowns were good, bacon thick and just slightly crispy, toast was Yumm soaked in salted butter and they had blackberry jam packets in the little basket (score!!!). If I am in the area again I would go back.

I have been here many times over the years, never at my request. The staff is friendly, but not very attentive, breakfast is typical uncreative fare. Dinner unless you are getting the fried chicken is bland, "feed it to your elderly parents food" Even for being out in BFE Hillsboro (which is not a culinary mecca by any stretch of the imagination), it isn't even that great...

Great place to have breakfast. Omelets are awesome, and they're coffee and staff are great too. Dinners, not so great.

Willy is not impressed... Service was on top of it and friendly Prices were medium to expensive for quality/genre Food was average to poor depending on item. Swedish pancakes were ok; very expensive for just pancakes, and over sweet. Country fried steak was horrible. Tough, poorly seasoned, thin country gravy.

Good food - ridiculous selection, they've got all types of American food. I'd recommend any breakfast food (served all day), they've got some killer hash browns. Just be prepared to take a shower afterwards, it's got a sad and greasy sort of vibe.

Its a great place for breakfast items, not so great for lunch or dinner. This place seems to keep drawing me back, i dont know if it the building design or maybe the food really is that good.

I cannot believe a restaurant in Oregon--let me repeat, OREGON--serving frozen fish and chips. Neither the fish nor the chips were fresh, as in fresh and made and cooked on the spot. A sure giveaway: perfectly square so-called halibut bricks (dry and flavorless), with mealy semicooked 'batter' that they called beer. Nada. this is a prime candidate for Food Network's Restaurant Impossible. Robert Irvine: tear out that old decor and get some real food in there! Oh, and did I mention they charge $14.95 for their Gorton's Frozen Fish and Chips!?

My husband and I have come here consistently every 1-2 weeks for several months now on a simple date night. First off this place is always chronically understaffed, at least at dinner when we come. We're used to it. Finally an experience has permanently soured me. I always order the same dish which includes bread. Every single other time we have come to the restaurant, WITHOUT FAIL, the waitress has offered to bring us more bread (OFFERED, we have never asked). This has been many, many times of ordering the same thing. Well tonight, after waiting 15 minutes just to order our food because it was even more understaffed than usual, my hubby was extra hungry and I let him eat the bread from my meal which arrives as an appetizer. So we asked for more when the waitress didn't offer a new loaf, but are told we must pay for the bread. I asked if this was new - no, it is always this way, and the person telling us is the manager, and the other servers are naughty if they give us free food. That's well and good but we have been OFFERED, not asked for, extra bread EVERY OTHER TIME we have eaten here so naturally our expectations are that there is more bread. This isn't unreasonable. If you consistently offer a customer a service, without them even ASKING for it, naturally they think this is a standard service. Considering we waited forever for our service but were still SUPER friendly and understanding, I'm not sure why it would have been that hard to extend the courtesy of a cheap loaf of bread. Isn't that even SPECIFICALLY in the power of the manager? I hope that loaf of bread was worth our weekly business, because this was really the nail in the service coffin for me.

I went there again on July 2nd. This time, I had the Denver omelet, and my wife had the sausage waffle. I don't think the sausage waffle was as good as the bacon waffle, but it was pretty damn good. My omelet was huge! 3 eggs? I don't know if I want to get near the chickens that could make those eggs...I wonder if they used to live near the old Trojan Nuclear Power Plant? No matter, it was really good as well, and the hash browns and toast were nice. But the next time I go back, I am getting the bacon waffle again.

I would never patron this establishment ever again! Our server on the other hand (Brandi) was a sweetheart and she deserves to be working in a restaurant that serves good food, her co-workers on the other hand were rude, poor mannered, and texting and carrying on like no one was watching. These ladies were caked in makeup and has nasty piercings in their faces, all we could think is dont let that fall into our food!! Our food was literally gag worthy, we ordered a Denver omelet and chicken fried stake. Omelet was average at best and the chicken fried stake was ABSOLUTELY HORRIBLE!!!! The "country gravy" tasted like glue and looked the same and the stake its self was rubbery, chewy, bland, and was one of the most disgusting things i have ever eaten!! We will never come back here ever again!

I've been here for breakfast before and it's been decent before. but now i am very impressed. We had the Pork chops, over done for my liking. I say that because i like mines slightly pink and this was cooked through. The good thing though that it was still juicy with a nice crust on the outside. What i had ordered for myself was amazing! The triple crunch french toast. Texas toast, dipped in pancake batter, coated with corn flakes, then rolled oats, deep fried. I know crazy right? The taste, awesome! i loved it and i want to go back for more now. These two dishes vaulted their status to me as being average to being awesome!

The waitress seemed really scatter brained, not quick to initially serve us. The bacon-waffle is a little too bacon-y, but I would order a plain one again. Hash browns are good; they are willing to add special things like onions and cheese. The decor is really lacking, but I hear it's been there awhile. Not sure I'd be brave enough to go for anything other than breakfast.

We discovered Hales through a friend and have visited several times for a weekend breakfast.. The decor appears outdated and well worn. Wait staff is courteous. Service adequate with a fair wait time for orders. Prices moderate. Breakfast selections on the menu may not be for the health conscious with servings large The food is just ok and I have not found anything outstanding. I have tried several egg dishes and the biscuits and gravy with the experience of stomach symptoms several hours after eating. No one else in my party exhibited symptoms so what is it ?.....

The best breakfast in town. Holy crap batman. The omelet is the size of my head. How am I supposed to eat all that? I love this place. Its been around a while and its not loud inside. Other breakfast places are loud. The wait staff is great and pretty darned cute. I would recommend this place as a good country style, eat enough that you cant walk restaurant. I Will go back many more times. -B

My friend and I were at Hales for lunch yesterday. We were seated in the room to the right of the register. It took me flagging down who I believed was our server after 20 minutes and she asked if I would like her to get our waitress. She did appear very quickly after that. She took our order and pretty much disappeared after that . We both ordered different versions of chicken fried steak. We were both disappointed with the results. The crust just fell off the steaks. What was good were the pancakes that my friend had. After our meal, It took some effort to get the bill. Today 01/09/13 I returned to Hales because I wanted the pancakes that my friend had yesterday. I was alone about 10:30am or so. The service sucked. There were three young girls that gathered around the spot just to the rear of the register and were gossiping like little girls. I would regularly not care about. However,When I order bacon and eggs with pancakes and the only thing that was hot was the syrup, Especially when the restaurant was not busy kinda blows

We had been driving by Hale's for 10 years and decided to finally stop and check it out. On our way into the restaurant we asked another couple waiting in the lobby if they ate here regularly and if they liked it. They said that they had been coming here for years, but it was out of convenience not out of appreciation for the food. We were warned about a few dishes and recommended others. Unfortunately, we did not take the advice of the well seasoned regulars and decided to order our favorite dishes, a ruben and a fish-n-chips. That was our second mistake. Our first mistake was staying in a place where the regulars admitted ''it isn't very good' because they were right... it wasn't very good.

They have a standard expanded diner menu with some fun additions. Prices are moderate. If you are really stretching things between paychecks Hale's is not the place for you. The decor is unobtrusive. The wait staff are generally friendly and attentive. Their kid's menu is equal to the adult menu in offerings. They are wheelchair accessible. the bathrooms have rails in the large stall and there is a ramp in the front. Being located on TV Highway by Target makes it an easy to find location. This is the type of place that is good for getting together with a group of gourmand friends who want the food to be secondary to the conversation. Not good for groups with many kids. Two criticisms I have. Both of these are things that I would criticize any type of diner for. There is a pervasive air freshener/ cleanser smell. Probably due to the recent regulations banning smoking in restaurants. It would be more tolerable if it weren't such a strong smell. The restrooms lack diaper changing facilities. The counter by the sink is not big enough to double as a changing table. This won't be a problem for most customers but may be a deciding factor for families with smaller children.

I love this place. The Spartan Sandwich is my favorite. Hales has been serving this sandwich since 1982 that I am aware of. It is one of those things that you crave. Of course I was a Spartan at Hillsboro High School so this brings back lots of memories for me. You have to try this when you are at Hales!

My wife and I have passed by this sad relic of a restaurant for almost two decades now. No idea what possessed us but stop tonight, but it was definitely not the brightest decision. The smell inside the restaurant (that so many have mentioned here) should have been the hint to leave, but we decided to power through the scent of hospital disinfectant and vintage air freshener. The menu was a bewildering array of Americana. Most everything was deep fried or included a side that was deep fried. I ordered the blackened salmon caesar salad, and my wife got the Saturday special. Hers came with a soup that looked & tasted like it came from a can. Fairly sure it was Progresso minestrone. The salmon squares on both our plates were from frozen stock, and microwaved, with little to no seasoning. My so called Caesar salad was basically chopped romaine lettuce with a dressing of mayonnaise, oil, and grated Parmesan cheese. My wife's vegetables were dried, old, discolored, no discernible seasoning, and obviously microwaved from the freezer. Her "baked" potato (like everything else) had been cooked in their trusty microwave. It was like eating a little bag of sawdust - all the butter on the table couldn't make it moist enough to get down. They even tried to fake it by wrapping the potato in foil (which you could see was shiny and new). The only thing edible in the whole meal was the little loaf of dinner bread, which we ate ravenously. Needless to say we did not stay for dessert. Our waitress was very nice, and attentive. But it was as if she epathized with how bad the food was, and tried to overcompensate. It's baffling how this place stays open. Given the poor physical condition of the restaurant, the cooks raiding the frozen food aisle at Safeway next door, and the psychologically imprisoned wait staff; it's apparent that the owners just don't care about the business. This place should be on Kitchen Nightmares. If you're out there Gordon Ramsey - Hales needs a total makeover...or a bulldozer.

I should of just turned around and went somewhere else when it took 10 minutes to get seated; keep in mind there were 2 waitresses and neither of them where doing anything. The place was empty and it was dinner time. I asked the waitress what they were known for, she said "ugh.. i dunno, nothing I guess". She then said.. "People like our Omelets, they're huge"! I asked if there was anything dinner-ish that she'd recommend and she just stood there with a blank face. Well.. we ordered the omelet and pan cakes (which she did recommend) and a basket of fries. It took forever to get our food, they charged extra for everything! Want Salsa? That's $1.50! Want Ranch, guess what? It's going to cost you! But they don't tell you that either! The food was ok, and the service was down right horrible. I'm never going back!

I am quite impressed with the quality of the food for Breakfast. Most places I have been to don't use quality products. Not only having quality products there has to be an experienced cook/chef to properly cook it. Much apprecation to the cook/chef that prepared my meal today. He or she is a keeper. Also my server it's says 10 Genny R on my check? Don't know if that was her, but she was very nice. Most places would charge me for a side of gravy for my hashbrowns but she said there is no charge (that was a surprise). The reason they don't get 5 stars is the place is old and maybe needs a renovation. But overall I will come back for the breakfast everytime I'm in this neck of the woods. This is my new spot in Hillsboro.

We're been going to Hale's for quite awhile. Never really liked the waitress we usually got stuck with. She doesn't greet you, instead, she gives a mean glaring look, very unfriendly. She's been there forever, so I don't know if she's sleeping with the boss to keep her job, or she's related, but the last time convinced me never to go there again. It's like I ran over her dog. That's how angry she looked, and it's surprising because my husband tips 20% and she's got to know that by now. Secondly, the bathroom smelsl like something died and refused to leave. I don't know if it's a sewer issue, but you should pee before you go out. Thirdly, we've ordered the chicken several times, and it's usually pretty good. The last time we went, I think someone did away with this poor chicken before it's time. It was literally flour/grease coated with very little actual meat. I will say, I do like their salad. We will never go back.

My husband and I went to Hale's today for our traditional New Years breakfast together. Our usual breakfast haunt had a devastating fire the day before Thanksgiving, and we decided to give Hale's a try. We were seated right away, and the staff was very friendly. The breakfast was delicious, and my bacon was nice and crispy, exactly as ordered. Our coffee and water were filled quickly, and the waitress checked on us several times. The only complaint I have is that my pancakes and eggs were all served on one plate. I absolutely HATE the taste of syrup in my eggs and vice versa. So I hurriedly ate my eggs and bacon, and then scooched my pancakes over and ate them. All in all, though, our meal was very tasty and the service was top notch.

A regular haunt for the Intel after work breakfast crowd, I was finally able to join them one Wednesday morning. Now I know why they do there all the time. We sat in the bar area, which was a little smokey (which shouldn't be an issue anymore), but had the most comfortable couch along one wall. The bar was already open, so drinks were had by all. Well, except me. I couldn't justify drinking at 8:30am after only being up for an hour. So I had coffee, which was actually pretty decent and you get a pretty decent sized mug. I am told that they make pretty decent drinks. And the lady who was working the bar and serving us was friendly. I'm guessing she usually works mornings, as she recognized the group and knew their orders. Impressive! The menu is pretty big and you can get everything from biscuits and gravy to steak and eggs. I had biscuits and gravy, which were very good. Not super peppery, but just the prefect amount of flavor. And the biscuits were light and flaky. So good! Prices are very reasonable There are TV's in the bar area and several Oregon lottery machines. No idea what the other portion of the restaurant is like, but the bar scored points with me!

The four stars are for BREAKFAST only. I won't disturb my memory of this place by reviewing lunch. Yikes. But oh, the pancakes! Oh, the omelets! I guess these are the BEST pancakes I've ever had. Seriously. Not only tender, but REAL. You can tell they are not from a mix. I'm sensitive to baking powder and soda, and the mixes all have a higher ratio than the home cook would use. Probably cheaper that way. But here, ahhhhh. Smooth and tasty and soft and dense all at the same time. The omelet 'shell' - the egg - is NOT OVERDONE like so many are. It's hard to figure out how they do it, since they are STUFFED with fine ingredients like little egg babies. Hubby always picks meat ingredients (you choose what you want inside if you wish, or you can get their picks) and I always have a bite or two. But for me, well, I'm a pork chop fanatic. And these are lovely. You can get one chop with hash browns and eggs (or sub in pancakes, I recommend it) for 10.95. But for only one dollar more you can get TWO luscious, bone-in (wouldn't eat 'em any other way) fresh chops, perfectly cooked with a nice brown crust. And get a side of excellent gravy to go with. Man alive, those are some good chops. The hash browns are PERFECT. They are crispy, hot,, and NOT from a jug filled with preservatives. Not not not. I hate those kind. Ewwwwwwww. But not here. These are fresh. Fresh. So I don't know where they get the eggs, but the yolks are ORANGE! Beautiful, golden orangey-golden yolks. It's the little things that make me happy. Like fresh. Geez, I'm gonna have to go there NOW. It's 6:30 a.m. and I'm craving their cakes and their chops. See ya! (oh one final note - service is beyond good. The gals all love their jobs and you can tell they get paid well and get good tips - don't disappoint!). JT

A good alternative to fast or chain food if you are in the area. This place is like a homestyle Denny's with similar items on the menu. Its all a little better than you might expect from a chain. As you would expect, the patrons are mostly senior citizens and genuine rural Oregonians.

My mom and I stopped in here on our way to go shopping this afternoon, and I was pleasantly surprised. First off, if you can get there on a Friday, you must have the clam chowder! It is AMAZING! Chocked full of clams and little else, the way it should be! My mom ordered the veggie sandwich, and was thrilled that it came straight with no fatty mayo. Just a garden full of goodies on a croissant! I wish I could say I was as happy with my sandwich. I ordered the patty melt. Now, I am a melt aficionado, and this just wasn't right. I knew the instant I picked it up and saw grease coming out of it. No bueno. So why am I still giving it 4 stars?? Well, it's simple. The waitress noticed I had only taken a couple bites, asked what was wrong, instantly offered me something else (I said no because I was full from the chowder and the great fries.. of yeah, the fries are PERFECT!), and then took the patty melt off of my bill without even asking. She didn't have to do it, but it was awesome that she did! Everyone there is uber-nice. We'll definitely back!

Pricey and kind of old. Not dirty, just kind of like a grandma's house. Homey maybe? Ridiculously good hash browns, cook a decent to order egg, sausage, etc. Huge vintage selection, ah youth. Order toast with butter on the side or it will come like it was shooting the butter rapids. Too much food! Lower the price, and give me less to try and cram into my stomach as long as I still get the hash browns. Good coffee and good service.

I hate to say this, but Hale's needs a make-over. Been going there for about two years, and my wife is starting to resist. The food is still OK, but the decor & cleanliness could use some work. I don't think anything in the place has been refurbished in a long time. Let's be blunt. They need to close down and remodel. Everything. From the rest rooms to the dining rooms. Right now, you can literally smell the funk .
