I have to tell you, I haven't had good Chinese food in a while. When I moved out to Hillsboro, this restaurant was the best I had found. I didn't think the place was so great, it's hey days were long ago and far away; however, their food was okay. Good enough to keep for lunch the next day. Recently, I went there and not only has the place gotten more dirty looking, but it has acquired that "when's the health department coming" scent. I ordered a couple of things, one being the egg foo yung; which when prepared correctly, is excellent. This place wasn't too bad; I use to love the Great Wall in Vancouver, but they closed down; or changed owners, because their once great, fluffy, souffle like EFY was gone. Anyway, I digress, this was one of those nights where I didn't feel like cooking, wasn't feeling all that great, and they were close. I went home and was so disappointed, I ended up giving the EFY to the dog I was watching. He took one bite and looked up at me as if I'd tried to poison him. There was some kind of white floury stuff on it, the veggies were canned tasting and the brown gravy was...hmmm...clumpy. Yeah, that's the best word to find. It smelled as if they'd had it in the freezer uncovered with other food. In the past this place was a hit-and-miss at best anyway. Maybe I should have been suspicious when the woman brought it out and said, "I hope it all tastes good." Something she's never said before. Well, I threw away the take-out menu, deleted their number from my phone and tried to chalk it up to experience. If I want really good Chinese take-out, or the best Dim Sum in town, I'll head over to Ocean City on SE 82nd just off Powell. It may be a drive, but they really do care what their food tastes like; and they aren't afraid to let you sample something either. Dragon Fountain, you may have had something a long time ago, but whatever you're dishing out now; I'll pass.

A give and take kind of restaurant. You can go there one day and have it be super good, and then go there the next day and it could be terrible. Sometimes I find the food over cooked and the soap very very salty. I would definitely recommend take outs. I find their dining area a bit unsanitary. I one time found lipstick on my water glass and hair on the tables.

Great Chinese food restaurant! Ordered the sweet and sour chicken and it tasted delicious. Would definitely recommend it if you like sweet and sour chicken. The only thing that I could think about that wasn't good is that the waitress could've paid a little bit more attention.

A-OK. A local staple that's akin to walking into Cheers -- a place where everyone knows your name. Don't come for the ambiance as it's best days in the late 70s are long over and a makeover is long overdue. The food, however, still stands up for Ameri-Chinese food. I'm not even sure if they cook with 5-spice or any szechuan peppercorn. Over battered shrimp where the little bugger is hiding in coat of breading four sizes too big is the norm. Why three stars? Consistency and speed. Go back to early 1970 in your own little Chinese time machine and eat what you used to have as a kid. The BBQ pork is uniquely tender and tasty, a standout. The rest, exactly as you would expect. Asides, same stinky bar where folks hide out for a drink and lotto. Not as depressingly pathetic as a trip to Dotty's but along the same continuum. Do expect banter from total strangers. This is after all (was) a gathering spot for local farmers and the like.

Look, the only people who like this place are those, who for their normal daily meal, eat a Swansons TV dinner and thinks that "nummy". There are people who have no ability to appreciate "good food", and anyone who gave this place a 2 or more, has no taste in their mouths and Mom never cooked them anything but Hamburger Helper. I ate there tonight (yes, my parents took us there when we were kids in the early 70's) and it was a really good Chinese Kitchen. I hadn't been there in 30+ years or so, but stopped in for old time sake. I should have known when I drove up to the place at 4:30 pm and there was only one other car in the entire front parking lot. I ordered to go. Fried Shrimp, nicley battered but nasty frozen shrimp with no ZERO flavor. Frozen potstickers from a bag (I believe), BBQ Pork that again was zero taste, and I assume precooked (restaurant ordered) BBQ Pork with no real noticeable BBQ flavor and quite dry. Fired rice with some ungodly, salty flavoring, the same as the stir fried vegatables with chicken. It had chicken, onion, water chestnuts, celery, carrot...among others, but all you could taste was the salty concoction it was all marinated in (although the waterchestnuts were crunchy and nice). I ate it an hour ago, and I am feeling uncomfortable. It was truly nasty food and I would NEVER think of going there again. But then, I don't do TV dinners or Hamburger Helper either.

The General Tso's sauce was actually pretty good, you could taste chili pepper (we asked for spicy) and it was good. On the other hand there was pretty thick breading/batter on all the chicken pieces. Usually this is crispy and 1-3mm thick, this stuff was about 3X thicker than what the norm is for this dish. We peeled it off because we try to avoid grains, and while the chicken inside tasted fine, the breading had the sauce, so it was a trade-off of eating too much breading, and losing too much sauce flavor. The non-descript 'egg rolls' on the menu turned out to not be vegetarian, I found small shrimps. While they lacked as much cabbage as standard 'vegetable egg rolls' (which I like!) they had a nice amount of savory celery, almost seasoned like thanksgiving stuffing.

If you want the best Asian food in town this is the place. Everything is simply delish, we always get the same combo family dinner with a few added extras. My favorite is the sesame chicken with a side of egg fu young brown gravy to dip my crispy chicken pieces into. If you are looking for a hip, up beat style of restaurant this is not the place. The decor is circa 1970's and the other patrons are usually of the older generation, but that's ok cause we all go simply for the delish American Style Chinese food.

We eat here regularly. Service is great. The food is hot and freshly made. It is consistently good traditional Chinese.

My girlfriend and I have been having cravings lately for some decent take out Chinese, and up until visiting Dragon Fountain we'd been let down every time. DF, however, is great. Sure, they're not going to be featured in Zagat's anytime soon, but for what they do (old-school Americanized Chinese food), they're pretty good. I was mildly disappointed with the General Tso's chicken because it wasn't spicy enough (read: not at all spicy), but it'd still tasted fine. The wonton soup was great, as was the kung po chicken and the sweet and sour pork (with that amazing neon red sauce). The service is friendly and take out is wicked quick. We walked in, ordered, and were carrying our food out 10 minutes later.

Wow....where to start??? Attempted visit numero uno, we stopped here to see if we could take an order to go. We found a soup we wanted to try on their menu but didn't want a massive amount of it. We politely asked if we could modify the size of one of their soups and the hostess rudely said no. Nothing else looked appetizing at the time, so we left. Second time, we finally ordered out of hunger and cravings for Chinese food. Big mistake! The food is comparable to the atmosphere.... old, dirty, and just plain unsightly. Lets just say that most of it ended up in the trash. If you try happen to want to try this place, stay away from their egg rolls. We opened one up out of curiosity and couldn't even identify half of the ingredients inside....yes, very gross!

For a small town restaurant the food and service is very good. No this isn't some snazzy downtown place. It is a "ma and pa", regulars welcome, cozy old atmosphere. The service is very sweet and I have gone there for many years.

I must agree with the reviewer of 3/23/09. This is a classic Fifties-Chinese-Restaurant-as-Hell venue. We've actually found the staff friendly, but the food is definitely not. It's heavy and not terribly tasty. Definitely give this place a miss.

Not what I would consider good Chinese food at all. The sesame chicken had no flavor, contained pieces of gristle and fat, and was still dripping oil. The BBQ pork also contained gristle along with a piece of bone. The hot mustard was not spicy at all. The subgum chow mein I had was so heat hot, I had to wait 10 min just to dig in. All the food just seemed bland to me and my date. I think the bathroom was the deal breaker though....one word to describe it....disgusting. We will not be going back. :-/

I'm more or less with Carol R. But not quite willing to give up the fifth star. Everyone else seems to have noted too the place is straight outta the 70s, and, honestly, I found the nostalgic feeling welcoming. Our soup was not gelatinous in the least. Our fried rice was not dry. Each menu item we ordered, as a matter of fact, was very well portioned, hot and fresh. I do not believe any of the veggies came from cans either, as some have posited. The server and cashier were friendly and polite as well. This was a pleasant Chinese comfort food experience for me.

I had a late lunch here with a friend who likes this place. I've driven by it a gazillion times in the ten years I have worked in Hillsboro. I wanted to try it because she and her hubby like it and I was curious to see if it was any good or not. Its very old school Americanized Chinese food. Its stuck in 1970. Booths are a bit tight for big people. The server was super friendly and sweet. He hugged regulars who were departing. Awww. +1 Egg flower soup was gelatinous, salty, full of "stuff". No. I got a combo: fried shrimp ( um intestines not removed), rice ( swapped for steamed), lo mein ( swapped out for pan fried noodles) loaded with mixed veg (canned?) And copious amounts of cooked celery with bits of chicken, and several slices of surprisingly delicious, lean bbq pork. +1 With hot tea and saltines for my companion's soup and a couple of fortune cookies, the total was about $20 for both of us for lunch. I dont think I will return. But I'm glad I tried it to put my curiosity at rest. And my fortune promised some good news through travel.

3/15, time for an update: I used to love this place, they actually had very tasty food, however over the years and especially last year they have really taken a turn for the worse. It used to be Old School Chinese done right. I went here with my family a few months ago and the food was just not that good and I thought it was a one off. I took a friend and yep it was not a one off, things truly have changed. The Egg Drop Soup was a gelatinous mess, off white and a texture of Jello along with no taste whatsoever. I managed to get it down with some crackers and a bunch of pepper. I ordered my usual entree, Fried Shrimp, Pork Fried Rice and Sub Gum Chicken Chow Mein with pan fried noodles. The Pork Fried Rice seems to be missing pork and it does not taste the same and the portion is much much smaller. Sub Gum Chow Mein with Pan Fried Noodles, about the same lots of chicken but it overwhelms the plate and is just mehhhh, sauce is clear and a mess of cornstarch I would guess. Fried Shrimp, shrimps are smaller and even though I did not notice it my dining companion had shrimps with their poop trail intact as I am sure mine where, I am glad I did not look. Sorry to say I think my tenure here is over with. Sad stuff.

I was fooled into coming here by a Google search. My experience here was absolutely awful! It started once I walked into the lounge. There were two people sitting at the bar one of them worked here. There were no more padded bar stools as they were all taken by the blue hair club playing video poker. I grabbed an uncomfortable wooden bar stool from the corner that had no back rest and sat on it. Upon ordering a mai tai, the bartender informed me that they ran out of mix and asked if pineapple juice would be ok. I said yes and then he asked me what was in the drink, rum or gin? I should have known at this point to just order a beer finish it and leave but I decided to stick up for the long haul. He asked me if I would like a menu and I said yes. After reviewing the menu I was slightly concerned and decided to stick with the old failsafe of an appetizer platter which consisted of barbeque pork fried shrimp and egg rolls. How could any standard Chinese restaurant get these three items wrong? Fasten your seatbelts I'm about to tell you how. The pork was overcooked and dry and not even warm to the touch. The outer red exterior had three different shades of color to it. The shrimp was deep fried to death and tasted like an old boot. They were like rubber bullets and barely edible. I was absolutely horrified at the look of the egg rolls as they had some very disturbing outer texture unlike anything I've ever seen. They came pre sliced in three sections and when I put my fork into the middle and tasted what was in there it was a ghastly. A bland strange tasting combination of mush that had no signs of Chinese vegetables or pork or shrimp or anything. The decor is straight out of the seventies and the bar doesn't look like it's been cleaned since then. There are glasses and knick knacks covered in dust, caked with dirt and just very dirty and dingy. If I were you I would stay very far away from this place. I may be from Massachusetts, but I guarantee I will never come back here again!

The best old fashioned American -Chinese restaurant around! I love everything they have on their menu! I actually really like the old school ambiance that they still have, just like when I was a kid!

Definitely "old school" American Chinese. This is like the places my mom would take me when I was a kid (and I'm glad I grew up). Pluses: quick seating. There was no one here except for a large family party. I think everyone else was in the bar playing video poker. The price is about the same as other restaurants. The food came quick. Wow! Did they know we were coming? And the portions were large. I had the General Tao chicken and I got enough for two people. Minuses: the outside has afresh coat of paint, but still has a worn look. There was a musty smell at the entrance. Booths with duct tape and chairs they sway more than the old Doug Fir in a wind storm. The meat was overly breaded. The sauces heavily prepared with corn starch (I can't wait for the Jell-o mold tomorrow. The fried rice was dry. And the flavors fairly flat (my spicy dish was more mild than I expected). All in all, I'm happy my mom got a chance to revisit the past. Now I can remember why I look forward instead of back.

Some of the worst Chinese food I have ever had. You can get better at the local Safeway and not wonder where you just ate food and if you might get sick.

Chinese Cuisine

The popularity of Chinese food in America can be adjudicated by the appearance of China Town in many major cities in the United State of America. The popular trend of ordering or opting for Chinese take away food isn't unknown in America. Chinese take away food comes to rescue when you're too tired from work or too exhausted to cook. No one can resist the temptation of eating spicy noodles, shrimp, chicken, beef or pork cooked in the sweet and spicy sauce. The cooking method of authentic Chinese food is a lot different compared to what is served in America.

Generally, Chinese use dark meat small bones and organs to cook dishes but this changes when you are eating American-Chinese fusion food prepared using white boneless meat cooked with broccoli, carrots and onions. Back in China, the food is less spicy and oily as they favor steaming and braising method for cooking the most popular dishes. So, if you have a taste for authentic Chinese food, then try finding a real Chinese restaurant in the city. You can also try the most popular fusion Chinese food like Pecking Duck, Chicken Feet, Hot Pot, Shrimp Dumpling Soup, Mapo Tofu, Wontons, Chop Suey, Egg Rolls and not to forget Fortune Cookies.

There are not many restaurants in America serving authentic Chinese food. A little research on Restaurant Listings directory can help you locate the best Chinese restaurants in the city. Chinese cuisine is continuously evolving, and you can find a variety of dishes categorized as the food for lactose intolerant, gluten intolerant, vegan, vegetarian, and diabetic friendly. So, if you have a group of friends with different taste patterns, save the hassle and visit the nearest Chinese restaurant in your city.
