They have the best fish and chips in Eugene and great prices!! Seating is a little bit tight so it would be nice if they could expand.

Tasty fish and chips at low, budget-friendly prices. During a visit to the university village outside of University of Oregon, I came across Alder Street Fish Company. The restaurant was casual, an order-at-the-counter kind of place. There were a few tables with seating, self-serve water and condiments at a center counter, and it was take-out friendly. The menu was simple, focusing on fish varieties cooked up several different ways. I decided to order a classic fish and chips: a basket of three battered deep-fried wild cod fish fillets, fries, a small cup of cole slaw, and choice of sauce. I chose the alder aioli. I was disappointed that there were no alternative fish specials for the fish and chips like other Yelp reviews had noted. My order was cooked in good time, about 10 minutes. The fish batter was fried nice and crispy. Topped with malt vinegar, the fish was tender, meaty, and satisfyingly tasty. While the fish was good, the cole slaw and fries were just okay. The fries were not my favorite style as they were thick cut, similar to steak fries. Price: $6.85 for wild cod fish and chips. Most menu items were under $10. 4 stars for cheap eats and a good value for fish and chips.

This place is very welcome. As much as I love the various asian restaurants around campus, I do grow tired from time to time. This place is delicious, healthy (arguably), and cheap. I have yet to try the fish & chips, but I can attest that the mahi fish tacos are decent, and the bbq salmon is a great deal. The bbq salmon includes a decent piece of fish, steak fries, and a salad. Plus, nothing on the menu is over $9. I also like that they have the garage door wall to open up the place when it gets warm out. A great addition to the campus scenery.

Solid fish and chips. I really like the ambiance and decor. I feel like this would be a great place to grab a summer lunch if I were in the area more. Nice for the Sacred Heart employees who forget their lunch at home. Good food, good price, awesome interior. I'm a fan.

I LOVE fish and chips but I'd been disappointed by my findings in Eugene. no longer! Alder Street Fish Co has delightfully filled the void. It's the kind of place that looks like it would check all the boxes but be overpriced and amazingly, it is not! They have a menu that goes beyond the basic fish and chips but it's budget-friendly across the board. The fish is just greasy enough but not over-battered, you get a choice of two sauce and a little side of slaw for the "fish n chips" meal. I was disappointed that they are no longer doing waffle fries but the steak fries were still satisfying. I like that they seem to have a partnership with Ninkasi as they serve exclusively Ninkasi beer ($3 a bottle) and their burger (yeah! a burger!) is Ninkasi-grain-fed. I'm a huge Ninkasi fan so this was immediate points in my book. Not a TON of seating inside but a number of tables outside make it a great lunch spot on a nice day. Eager to return!

Just ate here today and for a fish place the burger was delicious!! Love the think cut fries too

This is the best fish and chips in Eugene....also the best bang for your buck! I didn't see anything on the menu that was higher then $8.95. I ordered barbeque Salmon, salad and fries. The fries were some of the best fries I have had. They are what I call "steak fries." One of my friends got fish and chips (which I tried, best I've ever had. She agreed.) My other ordered Mahi Mahi fish tacos and it came with fries. The only thing I dislike about the place is it's small. I was thinking it would be a great place to go with more people but the seating is limited. That isn't enough for me to rate the place with 4 stars. It's excellent and if you love fish and are ballin' on a budget you should check it out!!

  • Rae D.

Food looks good, but the fish is over cooked, the fry too heavy and hard on the (my) stomach. The environment is cramped and the front door squeaks annoyingly every time it is opened. There are very few options for meal size. I had the fish and chips

    (3)
  • Jack B.

Have to give all the stars when you factor in all aspects including price which is cheap quality of the food which is very good and they come with two tasty sauces the fries are steak fries a can of soda is only a 1$ and a beer is only 3$ the girls working inside were very friendly the Asian place Next store was good too

  • Apple F.

pretty darn good place and very reasonable prices. Get the fish and chips with a couple sauces. The sandwiches are a big mess. I always tell people who are going to be at or near the university to go here. It can get pretty crowded around lunch and I dont think it is open very late. My friend liked the salmon burger. I did not give it 5 stars because even though the fish and chips are really good it's the only thing I like here.

  • Jerry Y.

Yeah this place is pretty awesome. I had the buttercod fish tacos that came with a boatload of fries. The two tacos had a piece of perfectly deep-fried fish and corn slaw resting on top. The price is right (probably just for college students) and the food is delicious. I assume their menu changes based on what's available in the market (as evidenced by the chalkboard menu) so your mileage may vary. I had regular fries but I heard their standard is steak fries or waffle fries, depending on the season. The interior is nice, small and posh, and the seating is limited. I wish we had something like this back where I live.

  • Matt S.

I've had mostly good experiences at Alder St Fish, but my most recent was a disappointment. I got my regular fish and chips. The waffle fries were nowhere in sight, the standard fries were okay but nothing special. The problem was the fish--very thin pieces, over-breaded and over-crisp. Second time in a row I've had subpar fish and chips over here. Next time I'm over this way, I'll probably duck into Sy's for some pizza. Next time I'm over this way and really want fish, I'm going to get something else from their menu.

Well that was tasty! On a whim, I ventured down Alder from my office at the UO, and popped into the latest business to occupy one of the restaurant locations between Starbuck's and Barry's that seem to turnover with every school year. Alder Street Fish Co. offers a rather limited menu, but luckily for me, my selection was executed flawlessly. I chose the ButterCod Sandwich (listed as po'boy on my receipt) with a side of "cool shred," aka coleslaw. The tiny dining room was packed and crowded, but tables turned over quickly, and my sandwich was ready in less than 15 minutes. When I received it, it looked great: a whole fillet dredged in what resembled panko (not confirmed), topped with remoulade sauce, shredded lettuce, tomatoes and a grilled hoagie bun. The fish was fresh, hot, and deliciously crispy (not soggy or greasy). The flavors were balanced and complementary. The slaw was super awesome, because it had shredded KALE incorporated with the shredded cabbage, and a light vinaigrette (not a gloppy mayo-based slaw). Glad to see they are serving wild fish from sustainable sources for their menu. They also offer clam chowder, fish tacos, fish & chips, BBQ salmon, salmon burger, and a beef hamburger. Sides include fries, green salad, pico de gallo with corn, and their cool shred. Beverages include bottled beer options, one white wine, and a soda fountain featuring Coke products. A nice change from my normal campus lunch haunts. I hope they stick around!

Good, consistent seafood. The Salmon Burger and Po Boy are both particularly great. The only thing for me is that they somewhat consistently overcook the fries so that they're a tad dry. Not a huge deal though.

Our family eats here for lunch, when in town, with one of us preferring to go get Thai food and join us, but it has become a place I have to stop at for my F&Chip fix. I've read the reviews and having lived in Seattle, Portland, the Oregon coast and San Francisco, I know what the "fishy taste and smell" is about and I simply haven't experienced it. (3 visits so far) The batter is different, and I actually prefer a beer batter, but I am happy with the panko style crust - and the fish is great, along with the aioli and/or tarter choices. The chips everyone agrees are perfect, so do we, and one of us continues to fail at trying something new and always gets the F&Ch, and one continues to get the fish tacos, and one other tries something different each time. We haven't been disappointed once.

Alder Street Fish Co is tucked into the strip and you might not see it right away. We drove by and saw this cool garage like door pulled up and pub tables in the front. We came back the next day for Fish and Chips. The fish was very good, crunchy and not greasy at all. The fries were big like steak fries and we loved it. A new favorite place for us.

  • Chris I.

Great food all around and decent prices. The fish tacos are a new favorite of mine. Not too much seating inside, but its nice to have a real quality place to get lunch close to campus.

  • Sean O.

Best fish in chips I've ever had! The only thing is that they now serve steak fries instead of waffle fries and their waffle fries were so good! Honestly not worth it anymore in my opinion. I went inside to ask if they would ever get them back and the lady said they weren't in season? Does the waffle fry cutter only work during fall? Lol

Probably the best spot ive eaten at close to campus. A solid 3 star joint with room for improvement. Fish sandwich and fish & chips were good, not great. Definitely a "clean", fish (not batter) centric taste...meaning, there wasnt a whole lotta flavor...which isnt necessarily a bad thing when the fish is fresh and served hot--which it was. Came with a LOTTA chips and a tasty tartar too. Service was great! The woman working there was quite pleasant and should be considered an asset to the business in my opinion. Prices....i mean, theyre ok ($15 and change for two people), i dunno though, i felt based on the portions, around $12 would be a bit more fair. Id surely be more likely to go back sooner if it was more like $12. I'll see whats up next time, maybe bump em up a star...

Really good fish and chips. Some of the best French fries I've had anywhere. Good staff, clean, inexpensive. Panko style.

I am so glad to have this place near campus; I enjoy fish and it's something other than pizza, yogurt, or Asian food (seriously, how many Asian places do we need near campus?!). I've been here several times with friends, and we all liked it. The people working there are very friendly and offered good service. I get the fish and chips every time, as it is a favorite entree of mine and I've never been disappointed with it here. It's a good sized portion for $7 (I usually have a bit left over to take home) and the breading is very pleasing. I also like the variety of sauces they offer here. This is tied with the Thai place a few buildings down as my favorite restaurant in the campus area.

  • Brian D.

Alder St. started off great but the past few visits have been disappointing. I only get the fish and chips though I have had the fish tacos which were pretty okay. The sauces are very good- try the aioli and the lemon wasabi- but the fish is bland and the steak fries are a waste of everyone's time. The waffle fries are fantastic but the past two visits they haven't had them. As far as campus offerings go this is probably the best non-Asian place (seriously how many Asian restaurants can one block hold?) other than Rennie's. Hoping that the next visit is better, otherwise I probably won't be coming back.

  • Zach H.

Great food at a decent price. There isn't a huge menu, but what's there some of the best seafood I've had in Eugene. The barbecue salmon is especially good.

This restaurant is young and i hope good things happen to it. The campus restaurant scene is really weird, and after the 9th Asian restaurant opening in a 3-block radius, i'm really happy there is something different with Alder Street Fish Co. I've been on the search for a great campus burger and i may have found my new burger spot. For around 6 bucks i got a very clean and presentable burger with a fresh salad on the side (a little nod to health, why not? I'll have fries later) and you can sub sides for free. i went back the next day to try the po'boy and it was delicious. i was very impressed that a campus place could cook fish like that. Many more visits to come. the decor in this place is great! old wood slats, wood tables, navy blue and grey walls. very classy and i can tell they're really trying to stand apart from the divey food scene on campus. Good luck guys, i can see this place being really popular and a staple to the campus food scene. keep up the good work and i'll be back soon.

Coming from Chicago to the West Coast, I really did expect better (maybe too high of expectations?!) but I really wasn't a fan. Customer service and their waffle fries were phenomenal which makes this rather a 3 instead of a 2. The Mahi Mahi fish taco, on the other hand, tasted fishy. Yeah, I'm from Chicago but it doesn't mean I don't know what fish tastes like. And fish really shouldn't taste fishy, but it did. Too fishy. Even my mother's fish she grills in the house Korean style that makes a fish smell doesn't smell OR taste this fishy. And I felt that the coleslaw, which is suppose to compliment the fish, tasted bland. Straight up just cabbage, no real taste. So it was bland and fishy in a corn tortilla. Even the Siracha sauce couldn't save it. Fries, you save the rating from a low blow. It was crispy, thick, soft in the middle and held together nicely. The workers and super sweet and professional to me, another save.

  • Randy B.

Really nice people, but the fish was greasy and fried to oblivion. Service was good, but I did not finish my Po-Boy sandwich due to the overcooked, oily mess I was served. If the wait staff weren't so nice, this would have been a 1 star review. My 1/2-century-old gut can't handle this nonsense.

  • Alyssa C.

So good... I get the fish tacos and they are delicious! They are better than the fish tacos I've had in seaside Oregon! Their waffle fries are to die for and I seem to always be craving a meal from this place. My friend has gotten a number of things from the menu the latest was a salmon burger and he loved it. Great comfort food that takes you out of Eugene for a moment.

I love this place! I went for the first time last week and was VERY satisfied with the service and quality of food. I have already been back for a second meal. U of O students are lucky to have Alder Street Fish Co. close to campus. I would recommend this place to all of my friends and anyone wanting a quick, reasonably priced, and gourmet meal! The ladies out front are very friendly and professional. Shout out to the chef in back! Keep on doing what you're doing! Bravo my friends, bravo!

  • Peter V.

Wow, I was impressed by this place. I paid $7 for fish and chips, and I got a good-sized meal. The fish was fried perfectly; super crunchy on the outside and juicy inside. The fries were normal (not waffle) and fine enough, nothing super special. I got the aioli instead of tartar, and it complemented the fish well. The slaw had a great taste (of apple?). Everything was well thought-out, and not bland. I appreciated that the chef (and you can tell it's a chef back in the kitchen) has a limited menu of 6-8 items, and has thought out each one. I look forward to trying many of the other flavors. The main problem is it's crowded because it's tiny!

  • Chris D.

This is the best place to eat in the west campus area, hands down. The fish & chips was perfectly breaded & cooked, good quality fish, and plenty of food for the price. (My friend had the fish tacos, which was also delicious.) The place is clean, well run, friendly staff. All around a class act. I just wish it had been around while I was in school at UO!

After a soft opening, and then a re-tooling of their menu, it looks like they're now in full swing. I popped in for lunch today and was happy to see a persistent line of customers (always good to see for a new business). One will immediately notice that the locale is quite small, but I don't think that's a fault; it bolsters a clean design, with small tables and bar seating along one wall. The menu itself is lean, which hopefully promotes quality and consistency among the items offered. Aside from fish (cod) and chips, they offer clam chowder, BBQ salmon, a cod Po' Boy, Mahi Mahi fish tacos, and a natural Oregon beef burger. Today's daily special was a wild salmon burger, which sounded awesome. I decided to get the most popular menu item (fish and chips) to get an idea of what their food was all about. For $6.95, you get 3 decent pieces of fried cod, waffle fries, a small cup of their slaw, your choice of sauce (tartar, cocktail, or their house aioli), and a lemon wedge. Service was relatively quick, with my order coming out in about 8 minutes. I was happy to see the staff operating in a very organized and efficient manner. As far as the food itself goes, I was very pleased; the fish was incredibly fresh, and was not overly greasy to the touch (something that isn't always easy to accomplish). The house aioli was a good compliment to the fish, but it didn't strike me as having that distinct if a flavor (I would have liked more garlic). You get a generous portion of waffle fries, but in my case, they needed a tad bit more salt. The slaw actually tasted fresh, and had a nice crispness to it. Taken together, I found this to be a very good portion for lunch, and it didn't sit in my stomach like a greasy, fishy, brick. I'm definitely planning on returning, and am hoping they cycle their specials regularly (I also want to see if I can convince them to do fried salmon nuggets). If you're around campus (or anywhere in Eugene) and are looking for a cool new place to eat, be sure to check this place out!

  • Oregon Food Junkie O.

EXCELLENT. A much-deserved 5-star rating from the Oregon Food Junkie! My favorite fish house in the city is/was Numan's, but this place might actually take over the #1 spot in my power-rankings. The space they've created is beautiful, sleek and practical, with a hint of Seattle's Pike Place Market going on. The fish & chips are fantastic. The fish was fried to perfection. A generous side of waffle fries complimented the presentation perfectly. The coleslaw was absolutely wonderful, and the kale was a really nice touch. The po'boy is simply amazing. Like possibly the best fish sandwich on the planet. Seriously folks. I've also heard great things about the fish tacos. Looking forward to trying them some day. But for now, I'm all about that sandwich. This place is the perfect addition to the campus scene, and I have no doubt they are here to stay. Every time I walk by the place is packed. This is our new eatery before heading over to Matt Knight Arena for a game, or actually, anytime I'm on campus. Great job folks!
