I only go her during happy hour. The amount you get is huge in comparison to the price! I also love the kimchi stew! Yum

We came to visit friends from another state for a night. We all came to this place for dinner. We ordered lots of food. I got the beef steak and soup. The Teriyaki sauce did not taste good at all, not was I expected. Didnt feel good afterwards. The soup had no taste, I had only one sip and stopped. One of our friends got Mussels, which I tried, that tasted good. The service overall was good and fast. I would give this place four stars if it was not for the food I had.

This seemed like standard American Japanese food. I don't like this kind. I got spicy tuna rolls but the texture of the tuna really bothered me so I couldn't eat it. I got chicken udon which wasn't really tasty. I was huge but lacking in flavor and didn't taste really fresh. I don't think they make the noodles themselves. The service was kind if slow and we had to ask for things several times before they were brought. This isn't very authentic but I know a lot of people that like this Americanized style.

VERY hit or miss. You can pretty much expect slow service though. I've been to Aomatsu a few times and usually it is decent. Never incredible, but I usually don't leave in a bad mood. The service has been slow and disorganized but the prices for Happy Hour are good and the sushi is usually fine. One evening, however, really just confirmed how poor the service is. Let me start by saying, I have worked in food service for many years so I am usually the most patient of any of my friends when it comes to slow service. My boyfriend and I went here for dinner. He got a daily special and I ordered salmon teriyaki. We got miso soup and salads in a reasonable amount of time. My boyfriend's plate was large when it came out so I assumed the server would go back and get mine. After about 25 minutes, my boyfriend and I started to look around. I think when I made eye contact with the waitress, she finally realized I didn't have food. After overhearing a stressful conversation between the waitress and Ben (who I assume is the Front of House manager), Ben came to our table. He explained that my order, although it was on the same ticket as my boyfriend's which was the ticket he showed me, didn't print so the chef's hadn't made it. He told me it would take no longer than 5 minutes then left. I wanted to call Ben back to say that I would not like to have the salmon teriyaki anymore because my boyfriend and I were running short on time (we had been at Aomatsu for 40 minutes at this point). I wanted the check but in about 10 minutes, the salmon teriyaki came out. It was literally BOILING in the plate. Steam was everywhere and hot oil popped onto my face, arms, and blouse. My poor waitress was mortified by the oil incident but only offered the phrase, "sorry, that is a little too hot" as an apology. I did not expect to have a free meal - since I have so much experience in the industry, I understand what comping does to local businesses. I really just expected someone to empathize with me. An apology and a minor attempt at a service recovery would have been enough.

I haven't gone to aomatsu for happy hour for about a month, I only get their crunchy monster roll ($6) because the rolls were large. I went last night and for the same price the rolls got significantly smaller, I wouldn't pay $6 for that much. I don't think I'll come back for happy hour

Go here sometimes for sushi, and sometimes for my Korean fix (bbq or bibimbap). Have never had a bad experience. Service is alright... some servers are better than others. Food has been consistently good. The place is often busy, but the wait time has never been horrible. They are usually out of the sake I like. That's about all I've got for this place. I'm a fan, but not jumping out of my chair.
(4)Karyn H.
Very cute place. Looks like both Sushi n Korean are offered. I'm here for the raw! Nice sushi bar. Selected mix sushi for lunch. Very fresh. Sashimi was awesome and cut thick. Moby dick roll. No rice only fish! Excellent! Salmon skin hand roll super fresh. Good service and attentive. Full pot of tea and didn't have to beg for more.
(4)Ben B.
Not too good or ordered the chiefs worst meal. Pork Katsu; dry, tasteless. The sushi is okay according to my son and the pork Katsu ramen was bland per my wife. Us at our age can't be sitting in a pit under a table. It don't make the food any tastier.
(2)Maddie R.
We used to come here at least once every week and a half. The only reason we don't now is because it's not healthy to eat out all the time. (Totally worth it.) We always get a couple vegas rolls. They're always SUPER packed.
(4)Paul Y.
My salmon was fresh. That's the only thing good about this place. Service....nothing to brag about. After placing my order it took a good 45-50 minutes for the food to come out. I asked for spicy mayo sauce and the waitress completely forgot about it. I had to ask a different waiter and that took a good 5 minutes. At least the salmon was fresh...right?
(3)Ashley L.
Fast food sushi... Decent quality, but not a 'fun' sushi bar. Owner was kind of rude when i asked for a tabiko handroll. Sorry if you can't make a SUPER easy handroll like that, I'll never be coming back...
(2)Sherrie V.
Sushi is good, but the service has been sub-par the last couple times I have been there. I'd rather walk a bit further and end up at Sada - great service, good sushi.
(3)James F.
Poor service as per usual...Waitress spilled food on me and didn't apologize on latest visit. It may be last. I agree with all previous negative reviews with service and cleanliness.
(2)Jake C.
I've ate here twice. The first time.... service was horrible! At the top of the list in worst service ever! Food was ok.. The second time... Service was okay and the food was horrible.. I had the Bibeembop and couldn't beleive what I got for $12. There was less than 1 cup of food in this huge hot pot. I order bibeembop everywhere I go... I've never seen THIS before.... Normally a very generous portion of rice and vegetables...So with my order I got some banchan (korean side dishes)..HORRIBLE!! All of it and I love all kimchi (so I thought)!
(2)Veronica C.
Food is decent but service can be so slow. Also I do like the traditional seating but for taller folks (or in any kind of heel) it can be almost treacherous trying to get in and out of the seating.
(3)Tara K.
Best sushi in the Corvallis area. No complaints. Good selection, fresh, and not too crowded.

Went here last night with a friend from Seattle. The service was nice, but the food was another story. My friend ordered beef yakisoba and I ordered Pok Won and Sukiyaki. Now the Pok Won was something, I give it 5 stars. The flavor of the roll as all the meat wrapped in seaweed exploded throughout your mouth giving your taste buds a great experience! I loved the spicy aftertaste of it as well. The for rolls for $6.50 were the cheapest on the specialty menu and well worth it and I was tempted to order some to go! As for the sukiyaki... A complete disaster! My friend told me sukiyaki is usually very good, but Aomatsu's version was worst than to ramen!! The presentation was nice, the waitress came out with a nice large iron bowl and took the lid off and the soup just steamed away. It also came with steamed rice. I tried to sip it early on but it was much too hot. I put it in my spare bowl after dumping my rice in. The broth was way too darn salty!! They must have used one too many sukiyaki cubes, because that's what it tasted like. The noodles were apparently different as well. Usually it's the clear thin noodles but I had thick udon noodles...I do wish I had ordered udon instead. The beef was alright, drenched in the broth flavor though. The tofu was better but the cabbage was just unpleasant. I personally don't like streamed out boiled cabbage though so I'm a bit biased. If it weren't for the Pok Won, I would have rated Aomatsu with 1 star this time around. The last time I was here, I shared the $60 Korean BBQ which was simply delightful!! I would highly recommend that dish if you have a good size group. Otherwise stock to the fresh sushi rolls and avoid the cooked items... Thanks for reading, hope it helps!

This used to be our favorite restaurant. We went there tonight to have their bbq for our anniversary dinner. The host told us that the one available table would have to be cleaned and he walked away, out of sight. We waited and waited. No bus boy, no host. We then decided maybe we would have better luck if we didn't have their bbq and asked for a regular table. Only available table was a dirty table and a table for 6. Was told by the waitress we couldn't have the table for 6 even though we were the only customers waiting for a table and that we would have to wait for the dirty table to be cleaned. No bus boy, no host, and the waitress must not have thought cleaning up the table was in her job description. She didn't seem too fazed when we left.

We go here all the time, but the only thing we had in this place is sushi (plus occasionally some potstickers and the potsticker soup) even though the menu is vast and varied. Yes, that is because sushi is that good and we keep coming back. One thing we never fail to order is Mobi Dick - delicious, beautifully presented, no-rice loveliness with a great seaweed salad as an added bonus. But we also love many other rolls - the big favorites are rainbow roll (I don't order it anywhere else anymore), Waikiki roll, and a Summer roll. This is our favorite sushi place in Corvallis.
(5)Jacob T.
The sushi was good when we finally got it!!! I got there at about 6 and got my food at 8! When I got there, they gave me a seat and didn't come back until 7:30. Then, about half an hour after we got there, an old friend came and they were seated next to us. They immediately ordered and they were served before us!!! When we finally got our food, they did not apologize or do anything about it. I had a very bad experience and have not gone since. I suggest that you save your money for Momiji in Albany.

as somebody that ate sushi in japan and over the years, I'm wondering why the nigiri sushi I ate today was warm. Since when was raw fish sushi supposed to be warm. that's just wrong in my opinion. the fish should be cold.... so, it's a volume business, and things have gone downhill. The tuna rolls also didn't look too good. I wish I could give a better review, ...their sushi used to be quite good. I just can't stand eating barely warm nigiri. I guess they left it out too long...that's not a good sign either. I will withdraw this review for a $50 gift certificate. :)
(2)Aaron E.
Pretty good sushi & most important in this forsaken wasteland... Open late! Weird about splitting bills, so hard to have lunch here with colleagues. The staff is on your side and embarrassed by the owner's recalcitrance, so tip to anyone eating there: bring cash and a calculator if you want to split the tab
(3)Elizabeth W.
Best sushi in Corvallis. I have had better in bigger cities BUT as far as local establishments go, this one knocks the other places in town out of the park!
(4)Morgan T.
The best rolls and Korean food in Corvallis.
(4)Samantha S.
This is BY FAR the best sushi place in the Corvallis/Albany area. I love their Aomatsu Roll, and their 911 roll is really good too. This is one of the only places I get nigiri because their fish quality is way better than most other sushi places. Their cooked food is also really good.
(5)Lyd N.
Great service, very fast and friendly. Food was great. Not the best sushi I've ever had, but still pretty delicious. Prices are much more reasonable than Sada, and the service here is exponentially better (although I'd rate the service at Sada as a zero... so that may not work out mathematically). Went in during lunch and ordered a salmon and Moby Dick roll. My fiance got the beaver balls which were non-traditional, but delicious.
(4)Meg C.
The BEST happy hour in Corvallis. This place is authentic and the service is great. They are quick with your food, even when they are busy. I would highly recommend anything with their unagi. I even enjoy their sake, which I am not normally a fan of and would not order. There is plenty of diverse seating (tables, bar, grill, etc.).
(5)Haoyi Y.
The food is fine but pricy for the quality. My major concern is the service. I always have to wait a while until no one comes to serve us water. I will then have to call someone myself for water and to get my order made. I only come here about eight times in my life and this happens to me at least three times. They should hire more people if it's really that busy.
(3)Kevin S.
Food is rather bland, pricy. Not the best place for sushi but not the worst. I like their nabeyaki udon, i guess thats the only thing on the menu i would suggest.. Well the beef bbq is not bad. Other than that i would rather go to sada for sushi. for korean food however, there're not many option available in corvallis so this have to do.
(3)Chris B.
The words "hit or miss" come up a lot in these reviews. That's pretty accurate. I've been to Aomatsu a number of times and I've never been blown away, but never had a really negative experience either ...until now. My Japanese friend and I went for dinner last week. I ordered some sushi and she ordered Bibimbap. I wasn't so familiar with the dish, but after researching it, I'm pretty sure what arrived in front of my friend was not a good representation. It arrived less than 10 minutes after she ordered it. The speedy arrival was the first warning sign in retrospect. My friend was given a mixing bowl - not a dish - of assorted vegetables, lettuce and beef that was cooked but completely cold. On top of this was a fried egg, which is traditional, but nevertheless, my friend said, "This doesn't look like Bibimbap." She went ahead and ate it. When I asked her how it was, she said, "edible." I tried some and wasn't very impressed. I asked if she wanted to get something else and she said, "No." In retrospect, I really regret not sending it back. Bibimbap is meant to be served hot and this resembled a salad more than anything. The only thing that appeared freshly cooked was the egg. My sushi came pretty soon after. It was tasty but looked like it had been thrown together quickly, a lot like the Bibimbap. The two servers we had were attentive but very unenthusiastic. To be fair, if I worked at Aomatsu, I doubt I'd be enthusiastic either. For a better atmosphere and better quality, check out Sada's.

I came here again and I loved it! Again service was pretty horrible but when the waiters did come around, they were pretty nice. We definitely had to use the service button a few times to get their attention. We ordered 4 different rolls after having a huge debate over why rolls were a million times better than real sushi where its just a chunk of rice covered with a slab of fish (how boring). Of course I won the debate hahaha. We ordered the california roll, veggie roll, shrimp tempura roll, and some roll that was completely deep fried. The rolls were huge although some only came with 4-5 pieces. 4 rolls were more than enough and I was pretty much bursting at the seams by the end of our dinner. The veggie roll was the most neglected and the deep fried roll and shrimp tempura roll were the best. They have a huge selection of sushi and rolls and a separate menu for hot foods. I love the seating here. I think its supposed to look like traditional Japanese seating where you sit on the floor but instead its just made to look like you're sitting that way. We were sitting next to the most obnoxiously loud women though but its okay because I was too enthralled by my date's stories about working at a bathhouse in Japan.

I am not very happy (minus 2 stars) that they refused to honor a restaurant.com $5 off coupon for takeout when the coupon said nothing about being unable to use it for takeout and I purchased well over the coupon's minimum. I asked if they would take it this once since I had no warning ahead of time, and the cashier refused, saying the restaurant owners would not allow it. I decided to try out Aomatsu specifically because I had the coupon, which is the whole point of coupons, right? Well, I'm certainly not going to go out of my way to go there again. Sushi was good, but being frustrated by the restaurant's unwritten policies made it a lot less appetizing.

I will start by saying I have not had the food at Aomatsu, but and after my experience I doubt I ever will. The one star reflects my disappointment with their service, which I think is just as important when spending your hard earned money in a restaurant. I went to Aomatsu just to get a gift certificate for a friend. I went in on a Tuesday around 8pm. They were not remotely busy. I walked up to the desk/register area where a "gentleman" I assume to be the owner/manager was on the telephone. No big deal, I was not in a hurry and was more than happy to wait. However, after SEVERAL minutes he NEVER ONCE turned around, looked in my direction, made eye contact with me, or made any other small gesture of courtesy to acknowledge that I was there, or that he would be with me shortly (or never as it turns out). Nothing! Mind you - were are standing about 3-4 feet from one another - awkward! Just when I began to think that maybe I was invisible, a waitress came over and asked to help. I told her I just wanted a gift certificate. She pointed to Mr. Telephone and said that he would have to help me. Fine.... Still waiting... Now, I'm an easy going, friendly person so I think to myself that maybe a) he had extreme tunnel vision and is unable to see in any peripheral direction, or b) he has a phobia about dealing with customers. However, my theories were debunked when in walks a nice couple for dinner. He (while still on the phone) gives them a head nod, grabs menus, and squeezes past me to take them to their seats. He then squeezes back past me to get behind the desk, again he never even acknowledges I'm there. He is still chatting on the phone... Shortly after another waiter asks if I need help. I again state that I just want to buy a gift certificate (easy money I would think). He says Mr. Telephone would have to help me. Note: neither of the wait staff attempt to get Mr. Telephone's attention, or find someone else to help me. Mr. Telephone continues his phone conversation, ignoring any interaction between myself and the waitstaff. He then begins thumbing through some checks, so at this point I recognized that it also is not an inability to multitask. It is just plain, being rude. I have never had such a strange restaurant experience. They must be doing remarkably well in this economy to so blatantly disregard paying customers. At this point, after waiting probably much longer than I should have, I walked out and went to Tokyo Japanese Steakhouse a couple blocks down, which is where I typically get my sushi takeout anyhow. Tokyo Japanese was easily twice as busy and I was helped right away. In and out in under 2 minutes! I appreciated their efficient, attentive service. Apparently it is NOT that difficult to administer gift certificates!
(1)Shawna L.
sushi & Korean food is good! I especially go there during happy hour for really good priced sushi. always friendly servers & staff & doesn't really take long for food to be served.
(4)Windy S.
I was extremely impressed with the quality of sushi for the value. Stopped in for lunch and ordered the Aomatsu Bowl Appetizer (Baked salmon, salmon roe, smelt egg, quail egg with house sauce on rice) and the Aomatsu Roll Combination (Salmon, crab meat, cucumber roll) and 6 pcs Cailfornia Roll. I was stuffed and filled a whole to-go box of rolls for under $15! Can't wait to get back and try some more!
(5)Chelsea M.
I am giving this restaurant an "A-Ok" or three star rating because that's exactly what it is. I had the Newport roll which had GREAT flavor but the rice was really dry. I am not a sushi expert by any means, but when I chewed a piece of the roll, I could feel every grain of rice. It kind of ruined the sushi for me. They do have a great selection and some fun sushi roll titles that make it a fun experience. Restaurant was clean and orderly and has a good atmosphere. Another reason this restaurant only gets three stars in my opinion is their lack of drink choices. You could either have expensive sake or cheap beer. If you are looking for a complete meal experience, this may not be the place for you. However, the service was great when we went. Our waiter was very attentive and there was a waitress there as well that helped when he was busy.
(3)Hugo H.
The Barbecue is normal, and overpriced. And I don't like their Sushi and noodle soup. Can't find any reason go there again.
(3)Hailie C.
0 star for services. Waiter seemed uninterested and never checked to see how everything was. Never stopped by to ask if we needed to refill our water. We decided to go pay at the counter after our waiter passed the table twice without taking our checks. The owner of the restaurant looked very unhappy for some reason. He swiped my card, then TOSSED it on the counter even he was standing right by it. The card slid across and fell on the floor. He just said "sorry" in plain voice, didn't even look at me when he apologized. I didn't feel any sincerity. I wasn't gonna ask him to pick it up for me but I still would like to see him making an effort to show me he was sorry. I just signed my bill, left a $5 tip (i just felt wrong not leaving anything) and left without saying thank you as I usually would. Absolutely my WORST restaurant experience!
(1)Aivi P.
This place is so good! My boyfriend and I are two college students and have come here two weekends in a row! The only thing I will complain about is that the service is a little slow. It's a little spendy but not so much that it's not affordable. Both times the bill comes out to be around thirty dollars. But we get so much food for that. We usually order one or two appetizers, and each of us order a different roll. The rolls are so big! By the time we leave we're STUFFED. The chicken teriyaki is delicious! I also liked the spider roll and the shrimp tempura roll. My boyfriend ordered the Crunchy Monster Roll and LOVED IT. It's a little spicier but it was good! The miso soup was also good! I will be posting more reviews as we go more often! Love this place! The waiters always checked if we needed more water, asked if the food was good, and three waiters said goodbye to us as we left.
(4)jason b.
My biggest complaint is that my wife's order (a cooked beef dish) came out 45 minutes before my sushi order. The waitress was very friendly but she admitted that she hadn't eaten anything in the place so she really couldn't comment on anything. Really?! My wife's food was very good. The sushi wasn't bad except they squirted quite a bit of a sweet, thick, soy sauce on everything, drowning out the subtle nuances that I love about sushi. For this reason alone I won't return for sushi, especially when Tokyo Sushi Bar is only 2 blocks down the street.
(2)Katie C.
So this place was ridiculous! We ordered and our rolls came, they weren't made very well and they got our order wrong. My friend sat with an empty water glass for a good ten minutes while the waiters giggled and folded towels. We ordered another Corvallis roll and it wasn't what we ordered, they refused to take it back to the kitchen, and made us pay for it!!!! We even had to get up from the table to pay just so we could leave. Go to the Japanese steakhouse down the street it's so much better!
(1)May M.
Favorite sushi place in Corvallis. The servers are nice and efficient and the food is awesome. We usually go during happy hour, which makes it even better. Good food for cheap? Heck yes.
(5)Terry C.
This place is more of a Korean Restaurant than a Sushi place. I've read some of the reviews on here and most of them are spot on, good food but terrible service. The food, is really good. I had the Dolsat bibimbop which is a mixture of veggies and meats with a raw egg on top. Mix that stuff up and you have a pretty good dish. The GF had the Spicy Tofu Soup with Rice and she loved every bit of it. This place is much better than the other Korean restaurants in Portland. The place is pretty big, it has two rooms, and a sushi bar along with ground seating. The place wasn't as busy because school isn't in session, so we didn't have to wait for seating. However with the place being as empty it is I'm surprised that the service was adequate at best. We saw three different servers come up to us asking how was everything and refilled our water, than they disappear for a while. I'm not sure what they are doing but to go AWOL seems strange, especially if the place isn't as busy as it normally is. The GF says that if she is craving for Korean food, especially the Spicy Tofu Soup than she says she has no problem driving 90 miles south, as long as I'm driving that is. At least it closer than Seattle.
(4)Rory K.
In a town as small and far from the coast as Corvallis, one would not expect to find such great sushi. However, Aomatsu delivers. Definitely my favorite choice for sushi over the other two options in town (Sada and Tokyo Steakhouse). The sushi menu never disappoints, and the full menu offers delicious chicken teriyaki, yakisoba and more. Plus they have a decent selection of sake, wine and beer. The only problem is that the service can sometimes be quite slow; if the restaurant is crowded, you might wait nearly an hour for food even in a small group. But when the meal does come it is worth the wait. The happy hour menu is a great value.
(4)B's R.
Optimistic when I walked in, but overall disappointed. Dry sushi rice. Bland spicy tuna. Waikiki, ok, but not great. Soft shell crab was good, but not enough to recover. Sushi chefs were looking at photos on a phone and didn't wash their hands afterwards.
(1)Ron N.
I've eaten here numerous times for business lunches. Never had any of the negative issues that others have. The servers were nice and reasonably attentive (lunch is a busy time) and the sushi is fairly decent, maybe not the best I've ever had, but still pretty good.
(5)Matt E.
I wish I could give this place zero stars. We had an absolutely horrible experience here. Really, just indescribably bad. It took us two hours to get two beers and a couple of really mediocre sushi rolls. Our waitress was nothing short of incompetent. We talked to the owner twice about why everything was taking so long and all he could say was "We're really busy." Yes, they were busy, but what we couldn't get him to understand was that we watched -- literally -- three dozen people get seated after us and leave before us. It was a debacle. There was no apology and no real understanding of the issue we were having. Yes, you're busy and service may be a little slow -- but, service should be uniformly slow. That is, we shouldn't be sitting at our table watching everyone else eat. We showed up at 8:30 and were the last people to leave the restaurant -- at 10:30 when there were chairs stacked up on every single table around us. I have waited tables and I have been a line cook. I know the restaurant business is hard, and I am a very forgiving diner. Look at my other reviews -- they are mostly four and five stars. But tonight was inexcusable. The service was horrific, the sushi was barely average, and the ownership doesn't care. Good riddance.
(1)Isabella N.
I'm surprised this doesn't have at least four stars. The food is great, the service is happy and check on you often. It's bright, clean, and great for first dates and such. The food is also amazing. Very tasty, quality, and generous in portion. My only complaint is that it opens at five for dinner. I don't live in Corvallis, and when I want to eat there I hate sticking around for an extra hour or so just to get a meal, when I've already run all my errands.
(5)John L.
Went here during a recent family trip. The food was really good with a lot of variety! Definitely worth going back!
(4)Amanda N.
I was really craving for sushi, so I decided to give Aomatsu a try. I also had a $5 restaurant coupon if I spent like $7 or more. I certainly did not have a hard time doing so. I ordered pretty much a bunch of sushi rolls. I asked for a side eel sauce and the sauce was really thick. I thought it was okay. As for the sushi, the rice was a little weird. Everything I had was okay. I had the California, spicy tuna, tuna, salmon, salmon skin, and few other rolls too. There wasn't anything I had that was super amazing. I went with my boyfriend and ended up spending $50. I don't think I would come back. The service was great and I didn't have to wait long though.
(2)Monica M.
I wish I could love this joint. I really do. I went there on my first date with my boyfriend and we got pretty good service that time (about five months ago). We just went recently with my roomie and we had the most uninterested, rude waiter. He was probably a college kid or some guy just out of college and he had the worst attitude. We had to flag him down just to get water and the wait for our food took forever even though I could see that it was already done (we were seated in view of the kitchen) and just sitting there. The wait staff literally just strolled through the joint, not even at a full walk even though it was busy. My boyfriend is pretty quiet and tried to ask the guy for water and more tea, but the waiter just walked off before he could get the "more tea" out. I didn't want to be rude and send the guy back for more seeing as he obviously didn't care if he got much of a tip. I like Aomatsu, they have decent enough food and good udon, but the service just sucked and it wasn't as though we didn't have a large order or weren't nice to him. I make it a point to be exceptionally friendly and polite to waitstaff because I know their job can be crazy sometimes. If service isn't a big deal to you, you'll probably like Aomatsu.
(2)Nicole G.
I am not a sushi person but my fiance and mother loved this place. They said the sushi was fresh and great taste. I had noodles, a little too much extra stuff in them but good flavor for sure. When we go back I will ask for not as many veggies in it. Great service and nice people. Quite place.
(4)Rachel G.
The service wa sincredibly slow. We had to wait 45 minutes for sushi. They missed one of the rolls we ordered. The waiter left us for 20 min without checking in or refilling our water. The music was horrible elevator jazz. The sushi was not bad, but everything else was. Needless to say, not impressed.

Still the best place for Japanese food in Corvallis or Albany, and I've tried 'em all.

Shabu Shabu + Sushi doesn't get any better than that!! Keiko and I had shared the Rainbow Roll ( yelp.com/biz_photos/j2Am… ) and the 911 Roll ( yelp.com/biz_photos/j2Am… ) . Both tasted sooooo good we didn't even need to the rice our waitress had asked if we wanted. The shabu shabu was alright but hey it's the best they can offer especially since it's not very well known in the region and few people have eaten it in town i'm sure. They used a leaner cut of beef (rib eye?) i can't remember which one it was but it really doesn't beat the Kobe we get back in the city :D. I must say the sauces were alright though. The goma sauce wasn't hittin the spot I thought it would and the ponzu/shoyu was really sour DX. Oh well. The food was good, Keiko and I were happy with it. Our waitress was really nice and helpful with making sure we knew what we were doing but I think Keiko and I were a little anxious to eat so we hurriedly told her we knew what the hell we were doing (not in those same words...) and ordered our sushi. And c'mon where else can you get japanese/korean bbq/shabu shabu all under one house AND get sushi!!! woooo! that's the part that did me in :D

I really hate knocking off stars on subsequent reviews but I had a horrible customer experience today and it warrants it. This isn't the first time we've been back since my first review. They always seem very short staffed but the food it good so we kept coming back. So today is my husband's birthday and he was craving Aomatsu so downtown I go. I got there a few minutes before opening and decided to wait as I had nowhere else to be. The wait staff stood around inside looking bored and finally opened the doors not a minute earlier than they were supposed to. I guess I get not opening before time, but when it's obvious both you and the customer are just waiting maybe you should open half a minute early? However, I'm willing to put that tidbit aside. What happened next was just poor customer service on all levels. I walked in and when they asked how many for seating I told them I just wanted takeout and that my husband had wanted one of their lunch boxes. The waitress handed me a lunch special and said here they are but we don't do takeout for them. I asked why and all she could tell me is they were too big. I told her if it was a certain item in them, like the soup or something they could just leave it out. Another waitress piped in at this point and repeated, no they're too big. I asked them what they could do takeout for and she showed me the bottom of the menu. I asked them to give me a similar item and then a California roll to go. Again the second girl goes we can't do that. I ask why and they get all huffy with me and all they will say is that it's too big. What the heck, you just freaking told me I could order these things on the bottom of the lunch menu and I know I can order sushi to go because I've done it before. In fact I just offered to pay you what amounts to 12 dollars when the lunch special I wanted is only 10 and I wouldn't even get soup with it. Thinking maybe they didn't understand, I decided to inquire one more time telling them the items I wanted and that I would order them separately if I had to. The waitress responds with a very abrupt no we can't do that. Not even a "we can't do this item but we maybe can do this" just no and then walks away. Call me crazy but a customer should never hear no if the request is reasonable. If it simply can't be done tell them what exactly the problem is and try to find a solution. Repeating it's too big is NOT an answer, maybe the soup doesn't travel well, maybe the katsu won't fit in the box. Maybe it's too expensive to package. Whatever it is just say that and come to some agreement. I would have gladly paid a convenience fee or gone without some of the items. Whatever you do, do not come to Aomatsu expecting any sort of customer service.

I really like this place! Best thing about it is the Happy Hour Special weekdays from 8:30 pm-10 pm. The prices for our favorite sushi rolls are much better and its not very crowded! YUMMM SUSHI!!!

Awesome sushi. Fresh and flavorful!!!! The seating was fun. Great staff

When I want comfort food (and am too lazy to make it myself) that reminds me of my grandmother's kitchen growing up, this is where I come. The sushi and sashimi are some of the best in the area. There's a great selection for non-seafood eaters and the lunch box specials are a decent deal. I have yet to try their shabu shabu, but if it's like anything else there I've eaten, I don't think I'll be disappointed. Service can be spotty at times, but is usually friendly.

My family and I decided to eat here for lunch today. We've heard from quite a few people how delicious it is. We all ordered from the lunch menu, but when our bill arrived we noticed that my boyfriend's meal was listed as $22.50, instead of the $10.50 that was listed on the lunch menu. We brought this to our server's attention, she apologized profusely, and told us it was her mistake, that she had charged us for the dinner. She told us she would be right back, that she would go talk to the owner. We heard her tell him what had happened. We heard him get loud. We heard her say that it was her fault. He sent her back to tell us that he would not correct our bill, and that we owed the full amount. Now, I have worked in the restaurant business for twenty years, long enough to recognize bad business practices. I will never give them my business ever again, which is disappointing because the food was delicious. I feel like we just got hustled.

Favorite sushi place in Corvallis

Best sushi in Corvallis. Also they have a really good happy hour.
(4)Frances C.
Came to Corvallis for a work event. Both the boss and I were hungry after our drive from Portland. Picked this place out from Yelp. Surprise, Surprise to find that this place is really Korean. Half the menu was fairly authentic Korean food. The Japanese portion was just the typical stuff. I got the spicy tofu stew with beef and egg. Tasted really good. The banchan selection was great. Tasted like they made their own kim chi. Tea tasted like Barley tea. If I ever get sent here again, will be happy to keep trying the Korean food. The boss got the Teriyaki lunch plate and it was huge! No complaints from the boss about the taste.

I go back and forth with this place (because sometimes the service is slow), but it's honestly the best you will get in Corvallis. They have a great selection, work with you if you want to change up a roll, and it's always fresh. They might not have the best service, but they do have the best sushi in town! I've also tasted their korean BBQ and WOW was that the best chicken I had ever had! They gave us huge portions, and also helped us along the way to make sure we had a great experience. If you want sushi go here! The best prices are during lunch!
(4)Rachel H.
By far the freshest sushi I've ever had. I used to live in Hawaii so that is saying something. My favourite appetiser is the stuffed jalapeño. So much flavour. We probably go once a week.
(4)Matt B.
This is my favorite sushi place in Corvallis. I'm sure it doesn't compare to other big cities, but for our little town it's pretty darn good. Their sake menu is very short, I'd like to see more options. The service was decent, but when the staff cleared the table next to us they just started chucking the dishes into a bin and made a huge racket while we were trying to enjoy dinner - a negative star for that. otherwise we'll keep going back.

The problem with Aomatsu is that they don't really care about the customers experience, and they don't know how to run a business. I've been working in the restaurant industry for 8 years now, and through my experience I've learned how to be a great waitress, and also a great customer. I have also had amazing managers who could write a book on how to run a restaurant. We bend over backwards for our customers. The manager at Aomatsu, I am quite positive, would be FIRED by any restaurant owner who payed half attention to what is going on in his restaurant. Like many people have implied in other comments, he is lazy, inattentive, and cuts corners in every way possible. My favorite, is how on their sign, their closing time, 10:00. On their menu, 10:00. On their website, 10:00. Now, it is common knowledge in the restaurant industry that the closing time posted on the door is the time you stop seating, so, as much as a server may dislike it, if customers come in right before close, as long as they are there before the time posted on the door, you're not closed, so you serve them. I don't know if this common American custom was lost in translation, but Aomatsu closes their kitchen around 9:35-9:45 (depending on how lazy the manager is feeling), turn off the music, and turn off half of the lighting in the restaurant, with several customers still eating! This is ridiculous. Now, as a server, I try my best to always give myself enough time to eat my meal before the restaurant closes, or within 10-15 minutes while the servers finish their side work, at the latest. One night I came into Aomatsu later than I usually like to, around 9:35 knowing that since I always order the same thing, I should be able to order quickly and finish my meal around closing time. I walk in the door and the manager snaps at me "YOU HAVE 5 MINUTE, 5 MINUTE TO ORDER." are you kidddddingggg me???!!! I would never speak to a customer this way and either would any of my managers! I understand some food items may take time to prepare, but if this is the case the restaurant needs to compensate for that by posting an earlier close time so that people know not to come in after 9:30 because they will get yelled at by the manager, or not get served. Bottom line, customer service at this restaurant could use a serious over haul. Most of the servers are very nice, but extremely unmotivated, and I don't blame them, I blame their manager. The service could be much better, the food could be much better, but the manager doesn't care about delivering a quality experience or product to his customers. And maybe the owner doesn't either, considering how many complains there are here specifically mentioning the manager, and the manager hasn't changed. Their food is generally very good (for Corvallis) besides fatty beef, but be prepared for a so-so dining experience. And don't bother going in after 9:30 unless you want to get snapped at, and have the music and half the lights turned off, making it an even worse dinning experience than it already is.

I was a bit disappointed with the nigiri combo appetizer; the rice was a bit dry and didn't seem to have much/any vinegar flavoring :/ The beaver balls were like nothing I have ever tasted! Soooo delicious and unique. Def five-star quality dish!! I was so sad that they were out of green tea ice cream, so instead we had coffee tempura ice cream which was alright.... I didn't like that the middle was mostly melted/liquified. Def room for improvement, but still tasty. They have a wonderful atmosphere and great service! They even have little buzzers you push for service. I would definitely go again!!

Even After living on the ocean in CA, Aomatsu is still the best Sushi restaurant I've ever been to. Never smells fishy Whether you get takeout, eat and a table, the bar or the grill, you'll have the best sushi on the west coast. Every time I go back to Oregon, I make sure to eat here and get the Vegas roll... the best deep fried roll ever made. Also, the dressing on their salad is homemade and AMAZING. It's a ginger dressing, that I didn't like at first, but now I'm so addicted, I want the recipe so I can make it at home. I only get back up about once a year, so I savor every bite!!! They also have good cooked teriaki chicken, but the beef is the best. It's sliced steak marinated and cooked over a bed of onions. YUM! Before I liked raw fish sushi, that was my favorite. You really can't go wrong here.
(5)Susan W.
Best sushi in town, lots of gringo sushi options for the non-japanese folk or faint of heart about raw fish. Servers get confused often but no more than any other sushi restaurant I've ever been to. Non sushi diners said the terriyaki chicken was good. Quiet atmosphere, reasonable price depending on how hungry you are...

My friend and I love this place. We often get take out to go. The staff is friendly. The california rolls are perfect. Some places just put surimi in the roll without chopping it up with mayo but Aomatsu does. The sushi fish NEVER smells and is so tender that it's like butter.
(5)Mike C.
Not bad for a small city. If you have to get your fix you can't go wrong with this place.
(3)Mairead R.
Lackluster. Scallop was inedible and rice wasn't cooked through or seasoned enough. If you go with sushi, stick to the simple options. Sake nigiri, my gold standard, was passable and rainbow roll, my friend's gold standard, held up well too. Skip anything with spicy or with mayo sauce. Restaurant is huge, divvied up into sections for korean bbq/shabu shabu, family dining, and smaller tables. The staff were kind but generally uninterested.

We've gone twice for lunch and both times have been pretty good. The specialty rolls are pretty big. My favorite so far is the "Crunchy Monster". I like my sushi to have a firm texture, and the spicy crab gave it an awesome kick. There are over a dozen specialty rolls, as well as the regular maki and sashimi, so you're bound to find something you like. The sushi I've had has always been pretty fresh tasting. The standard Japanese fair, such as katsu and yakisoba, have been pretty good as well. The standard miso soup and salad are tasty but not extraordinary. Overall, decent Japanese food in a fairly nice atmosphere, though still family-friendly. The service is a little scattered though. 2 waiters for the lunch rush is not near enough.
(4)Pani L.
Come in early and start with the edamame and miso soup. All of the sushi is fantastic and this is in large part to the iron fist of the grandma that runs the place. Do not mess with her! The food always comes at a good pace and the service is always great.
(5)JP B.
Aomatsu definitely opened my eyes to sushi. There are some great Chef Specials available and the prices are pretty fair. The atmosphere is spot on. The owners were somehow able to create a full sushi atmosphere in the middle of downtown Corvallis. Great job. The only problem with Aomatsu, and it is a big problem, is the service. I frequent there at least every other week, and each time, the same things occur. I can't even count how many times the waitress has "forgotten" to put my order of calamari into the kitchen. Honest mistake if it happens once or twice, but anything beyond that is just sheer laziness. I've only had one waitress at Aomatsu that consistently asked how my meal was and filled up my water at every chance possible. The others, not so much. Fix the service and this place would get 5 stars. Few tips for first-timers: When seated ask for a pitcher of water, or two if you have a large group. Then you don't have to worry about asking the waitress every 10 minutes. Also, order the Beaver Balls. If you like stuffed mushrooms, these are amazing, especially if you add cream cheese to the order. It was a tip from the good waitress, and trust me, it makes them even better.

This place is a solid 3.5 stars. I met up with a gf for lunch the other day and was pleasantly surprised with this place. It had a cute little setup, but we opted for the sushi bar. Get the edamame to start with as it is a ridiculously huge portion for the price you pay! Make sure to ask for sea salt sprinkled on top though. I feel like that makes it x10 better. The sushi itself was pretty good quality, although I think I would go for Ginza in Albany. There aren't that many sushi offerings around here, but what can you do? The sushi was fresh, but I felt like the portions were a little small. I opted for the sushi tacos, and while they were really good, they weren't enough to fill me up. Thankfully I ordered the spicy scallop roll (though I ordered the hand roll and they gave me the cut roll) and my friend let me have a few bites of her sushi. They have some pretty interesting rolls worth checking out, though I feel like it is overpriced by a dollar or so a roll.

I came here for dinner tonight with friends. I cannot say what we had ordered (since I didn't order any of them), but we had like 9 different items and paid $78 dollars. [+] I absolutely love this place. (This place is much better than Tokyo Steakhouse...) The inside is very decorative and I love the seating arrangements as it has a very unique style. Also not to mention, they have a bell service to inform the servers!!! Woh! Super awesome! The food and service was great. Very fresh ingredients used. Props for pictures on the menu. [-] There's nothing I dislike here. I could complain about how expensive the food here, but then again, IT IS sushi. Sushi is not cheap, well unless you go to a cheapo place, then that's a different story. [?] I will definitely come back here again as I love every aspect of Aomatsu.
(5)Anna L.
I just had the most amazing sushi today. First time going and I'm already thinking of reasons to go back! I loved it. I started off with a salad with this homemade dressing that is fresh and light, with some edame and then had this delicious platter of different rolls. The spicy salmon and spicy tuna were delicious! they all were! Everything is so fresh and yummy. The atmosphere is great. I definitely plan on coming back.
(4)Jeff G.
I thought this place was pretty darn good. The first test it passed was that it didn't smell fishy. The second, was that the service was very good, and lastly the third, the food was freshed and tasted awesome! They have a nice selection of sushi and rolls and options for the non-raw lovers. I would like to go back again and try their shabu-shabu.

Since writing our last review, Aomatsu had a chef upgrade, or did something which made us willing to return. I'd meant to alter my review sooner. Haven't tried the Japanese side again, but on the Korean side we've had a couple of good experiences. The panchan (side dishes) have improved, and they now quite properly offer several little dishes, with good variety. The pajeon (Korean "pancake") is ok, and I really like the spicy beef soup. Oh heck, the Korean name... yuk gyae jang, I think. When we crave Korean food and can't drive all the way to Beaverton, this is the place.
(3)Jill K.
I eat here 2 to 3 times a month for lunch so they must be doing something right. Their sushi is OK, not great, not bad, and their sushi lunch specials are reasonably priced - for sushi. Their udon, house salad and miso soup are OK. Their tempura is better than average, but usually when I come here I'm looking for sushi. Just to warn you, I've never had their chicken or pork lunch boxes (I try to avoid factory raised meat), just their salmon (too expensive) or tofu (battered and fried but amazingly bland), so I'm not a fan of their lunch boxes. Also I can't rate their teppanyaki grill. It's not my style. If you like that kind of thing they do have it at dinner time.
(3)Helen Y.
Best sushi in town... compare to all the other Japanese restaurants around this area. Great deal at lunch, a little bit over price on dinner. aomatsurestaurant.com

I wrote my previous review a couple years ago, but since returning, I've had nothing but great experiences. The fish has always been fresh, and the service has been excellent. I love the sashimi and sushi combo, and the 911 roll is so sweet and deliciously fried. I love coming here now for sushi.
