Write a review? Could've sworn I did way back when I was a Yelp freshman. Yeah, I'll say I'm a fan. Soy Grill & Original Thai BBQ were the easiest, quickest, & cheapest lunches to grab when I worked for KP. There are so many restaurants on Sunnyside Rd but I managed to always be in line with the rest of the chicken teriyaki fans. Walking across the street from the hospital to Soy Grill can't get more convenient than that. I'd glance over the menu with over a dozen options but every time I'd order the same thing time & again, "#1 chicken teriyaki, please." The slices of chicken are moist & tender but I've gotta have more teriyaki sauce than what's marinated in the chicken. The side salad is blah; iceberg lettuce, big whoop. The dressing, however, is like Dorothy Lynch (think french dressing) & Thousand Island had a baby. It's light & sweet & with the left overs it tastes even better mixed with the bed of white rice. Condiments table has teriyaki sauce as well as Sriracha & sweet chili sauce but really all you need is teriyaki. Service is fast which is good when you're on a lunch break. Call in your order if you don't have time to sit & eat there. The place isn't always the cleanest but when there's a break in customers the tables get wiped down & the bins of dishes get collected. The price is ridiculous for the generous amount of food; serves me twice. I think $6.45 is a great price for chicken teriyaki. I recently returned & forgot how much I liked Soy Grill. I'm a fan because the food is good, it's cheap, & it's fast food without it being fast food.

Good size portions, yummy chicken and rice, would go here again to try more dishes in the future, there were quite a few people there, so it must be a popular spot for locals

This place is okay. The prices are fair. No ambiance to speak of in the place. It is your basic chopped up chicken with rice and some veggies. The veggies looked to have been cooked all day and seemed a bit old. I have eaten here before, not really memorable.

I hate to do this, since there is such a lack of small businesses in the Clackamas area, but this place really pissed me off. I ordered 2 menu items to go from this place last night; jap-chae which is a specialty item, and chicken yakisoba which is obviously a popular item a lot of people order. When I got home, I ate the jap-chae and my wife and daughter split the yakisoba. The Jap-chae was OK, but the thing that pissed me off is that the Styrofoam box the yakisoba came in had little noodle shaped holes in it (see picture). That coupled with the dry chicken and stuck together, overcooked noodles, we came to a very disappointing conclusion: they reheated the yakisoba in the microwave. Wow, just wow. Mind=blown. Yakisoba is such a simple, easy to make dish. Its so easy, we make it on busy weeknights at home. There is no excuse whatsoever. It was disgusting and I will never, ever eat at this place again. For better options, I recommend ichi 21 (does have its quirks but still better) or joy teriyaki on 182nd and Powell (worth the trip).

A good solid teriyaki restaurant. Great to have in the neighborhood.

I love Soy Grill-have been eating there for years. My favorite is the Spicy Chicken and the Bipimbap. It is a bit of a hole-in-the wall, but that doesn't stop me because the food is so good. I have tried lots of teriyaki places and find this is the best. Prices are reasonable--about $7 for teriyaki, rice, salad.

I am writing this review based off their Bi Bim Bop. It was inexpensive and very good. I love the stone bowls but didn't expect to see that in a teriyaki joint. The gentleman who served us was so nice and welcoming. The place reminds me of the hole in the wall places in Korea. I love the mom and pop feel. If you want a super hip vibe this place isn't for you. The bathroom was pretty lousy but it worked. I wish it was full on Korean and not a mix. All the Korean dishes looked great. My husband liked his teriyaki well enough.

I was bummed that we didn't have a delicious, quick and easy teriyaki joint by our new house. Then we stumbled across this, then we noticed that it was Korean owned (japchae, bibimbap, kimchi etc photos on the window); this made me even more happy! We went inside, it's what you except of a small teriyaki place. There was always a small line of people coming and going, it moved quickly and is a good sign of a trusted neighborhood spot. The staff was very friendly and personable. We ordered their japchae, a spicy chicken combo (had gyoza) and spicy chicken over fried rice. Everything was delicious. The more simplified version of these otherwise potentially complex dishes, in great portions for standard prices. We got our orders to-go and headed home, sitting on our couch overly full with happy bellies :) We will definitely be back soon! Curious about their chicken katsu.

Ate here yesterday with my daughter and I ordered the shrimp udon. I've eaten here before and had the chicken teriyaki, which was wonderful. But today I was disappointed. For one thing, there was no shrimp in the udon, and my daughter and I were so busy catching up that I didn't notice. It could've been easily remedied and it's totally my fault that I didn't do that. Her coconut shrimp and fried rice was delicious. The shrimp were crisp and not oily, and the fried rice was yummy. My disappointment came when my udon arrived. It had all the right things in it: broccoli, cabbage, kamaboko, and even an egg, and it was too hot to eat at first, which is exactly how it should be. However, the dashi was pretty tasteless. I tried adding some teriyaki sauce to it, but that didn't help much. I brought most of it home and will add more dashi here. Next time I'll order something else, and I'm sure it will be a lot better.

I really enjoy this place. The chicken is good without being too sweet. Lots of options and quick take-out service.

  • Donna K.

Yum! Spicy chicken with rice is the standard order. The chicken is so good with a semi spicy sauce, it's more tangy than spicy. I think there's gochichang in it making a Korean fusion. Other foods items on the menu may be hit or miss. The side salad with a miso dressing? It Is perfect with any rice dish. Can't beat the price for 7.50, you'll have leftovers for sure! The spicy charge is not unlimited! You must pay for extra. Someone tell me how to make it at home!! Yummy teriyaki in clackamas, woot woot!

I was up in Clackamas for about two weeks house sitting and searching for a place nearby for some good warm food not of the fast food variation. Had to find a ups shop and saw this next door- super fast, friendly employees and the food was SO GOOD, not too much teriyaki sauce, wasn't too sweet either; the chicken wasn't dry or overcooked, the salad had the perfect amount of dressing and the rice was delish. I actually came back a second time after doing a call in order and tried the delicious gyoza and sauce which I'm craving now! Cheap prices, amazing flavors and large quantity, totally worth it!

  • Jen K.

If I could give no stars for customer service I would. Food is ok but way over priced especially compared to other places. New seasons down the street has organic chicken teriyaki and they fill that bowl up! And the prices are comparable so for organic why not? I don't mind some of the other counter workers but the lady who I think is the owner seems fake and can be cheap at times with her charges. I tried to say hello one time she was having to cook in back and she looked as if she blamed me for having to cook! Their spicy chicken is not good! They only add some kind of hot sauce mixed with mayo and call it spicy but mixed with no veggies! Just chicken and hot mayo sauce! Good thing kaiser is right across the street in case my arteries get clogged! If I know places I know good food! Here it's more impersonal and just get you out the door feeling. At least other places you feel they care how their dishes go out. For sure don't do take out cuz I had undercooked chicken before! They are so much in a hurry they don't cook their chicken and just throw veggies on the side like it was tossed in last minute! Won't go here again! Service is not what it used to be and food too!

  • Melanie T.

Best teriyaki in the Happy Valley / Clackamas area. They have amazing sesame salad dressing. Way better than anywhere else. The younger girl that works at the counter is ALWAYS so friendly. Reasonable price and healthy as well. I find myself here for take out regularily! Great choice if your looking for a quick lunch that's good for you!

I eat here often: my favorite is number one. The people here are so friendly, kinda small place, but the food and look of this place makes up for it.

  • Paul R.

This little hole in the wall is a hidden gem. The dinning room is nothing special but the food speaks for its self. The teriyaki sauce is true to form and the salad dressing is unique and delicious. The portions are a great value and like that they have all white meat options available. The gal at the register is always smiling and in a great upbeat mood even when the place is busy.

  • Sid G.

The food was ok. I ordered The spicy Chicken Yakisoba and enjoyed it until I found a giant piece of plastic in my meal. I came here looking at the good reviews on yelp but won't return due to the plastic incident.

This was my absolute favorite restaurant for many years. I have been going to the Clackamas location since they first opened and LOVED the spicy teriyaki chicken. Unfortunately over the years the quality has gone down hill. The last few times I have gotten my usual with white meat chicken and the meat is just not good. I will continue to get the sauces, but there are better quality teriyaki places for less money.

    (2)
  • Genna C.

This ticked all of my teriyaki place boxes. All white meat option? Check. No scary cooked cabbage vegetable surprise? Check. Extra sauce on the table? Check. But there is so much more. Super friendly service -- and by the sound of it, there are a lot of regulars and the nice gal at the counter greeted each of them by confirming their usual order. I like it. I also like that my order was very fast, and that the chicken seemed to be cooked in and/or marinated in teriyaki. Not white meat slapped down on rice with sauce over it like so many other places. [Also, why is that ever okay? If a BBQ place just baked a chicken breast and put sauce over it, that's not BBQ. But it's usually totally acceptable at teriyaki/bento places. And it should not be! Arrrrggggh.] Good sauce too, nice soy flavor and sweet without being overly so. I also really liked that it came with a side salad, which yeah is pretty much iceburg lettuce with dressing, but it's a good dressing and so much better than that slimy gross cooked cabbage yuck at most places. Awesome, and I'd totally go back if ever on that side of town!

We just now moved to the area, so I decided to give these folks a try. The salmon teriyaki is perfect, with the salmon firm and flaky but tender and moist. The gyoza were a delicious appetizer. I'll visit this place again.

This place NEVER lets you down!!! I've tried a few similar style restaurants (all closer to my house) and no one can hold up to the "soy grill standards"... I will forever go out of my way to continue to give this great establishment my business (except on Sundays, but just because they are closed :-( ) give them a try, they won't let you down!!!

$7 for chicken teriyaki, rice & salad. Its mediocre food. It's a pretty small place & really fast, friendly service.

So I struggle with this review, not because it's tough to write something for a fair-to-decent little hole in the wall strip mall teriyaki joint... And not because the food and service are at all inconsistent. Not even because I've only been there a couple of times...no This one is a struggle for the following reason: I don't know whether to go with 3 or 4 stars for this place. The food is pretty damned consistent. Not remarkable, but very consistent. And that's part of it...it's NOT remarkable! They have a somewhat varied menu (and just added bibimbap as well! +1 star!) and you will seemingly always get exactly what you expect: Decent Asian food for a strip mall. No more, no less. The service is friendly if somewhat abrupt. no surprise as I usually go there during late lunch...and they are usually fairly busy. Nevertheless, they are quick (especially if you call ahead). The space itself is reasonably clean although the tables are sometimes sticky (see the aforementioned "busy" still, -1 star) I end up going there a lot (hence the "Duke" part)...mostly due for the sake of convenience (short walk) than because I sit at my desk just counting the minutes until I can partake of their delicacies. Nevertheless, I keep going there, so +1 star! They carry Jarritos, which is one of the few sodas that I can stand. I know...Mexican soda in an Asian joint, but I appreciate having the option (+1 star!). But they NEVER have the tamarindo flavor, no matter how many times I request it... (-1 pouty star). So much for royal prerogative... Oh wait...they didn't have ANY Jarritos the last time I was there...have they stopped carrying it??? (-1 very strident star) Well, that settles it for me. 3 stars it is. I know how people around here see 3 stars and think it sucks, but that's just plain wrong. The grading chart says 3 stars = A-OK, and this place is just that..good, not great, not bad, not excellent. Try the spicy chicken with some sriracha on it...it's quite tasty. The new bibimbap is alright as well. And they even offer brown rice! Who knew the difference between 3 and 4 stars was tamarindo Jarritos??? You just never know, eh?

Horrible food. Rice tasted like fish and chicken katsu was inedible. We ate there after a friends recommdation, and what a complete dissappointment. We threw are meal away and went somewhere else. Counter staff was very friendly however

I do love this place, as does everyone else who works near it (or so it seems). While no one will accuse this little joint of being fine dining, their dishes are surprisingly tasty and well prepared. My personal favorite is the Spicy Chicken, with some extra Sriracha sauce. The staff is always friendly, and quick. You don't have to sit around very long to get your food. Even when it's busy (which is often), you don't have to wait for more than 5 minutes or so. I recommend getting your order to go, because there aren't a lot of tables, and they fill up fast.

Food is fine, but the place is too freaking hard to find. I'm not an inept map user, but the multiple strip malls in such close vicinity make for a bit of a maze.

I think this place is fantastic. I read someone else's review and they couldn't decide how many stars to give it since it's not "remarkable"... Whatever, bro. I think the fact that I can eat there once a week is pretty good. And there are plenty of reasons I can eat there once a week. For starters, the girl at the counter is always friendly. When there is only one face you see in a tiny place, that face better belong to someone with manners and that's likeable. She's nailed it. She takes your order and she's quick and does things right and gets stuff done (especially considering they have an incredible amount of orders called in AND have people eating in the restaurant). I've never once had a problem with the food. They give generous portions and it's always consistent. It's not like any other restaurant where your food can be cold one day, or dry the next time you go in, and then good enough the next time. You order, you sit down, they cook it and bring it out. So it's fresh and delicious. Yes, it's your standard teriyaki order, so you choose your meat to go with your rice, and then instead of steamed veggies, they have a side salad. I mean, they have other stuff too, but that's the typical order. I'd rather have consistent food that you can rely on than one AMAZING meal, and never a repeat again. Why? Because I can come back to this spot once a week, where I really can't at somewhere that was only "remarkable" once, and then disappointing after being "remarkable" once. Great customer service and good food on the regular? I think that deserves a great review... Or a "remarkable" one if you will... Bro.

LOVE this place. Completely blows away my expectations for what a divey-looking teriyaki joint is like. It's not gourmet cuisine, but it's far and away the best teriyaki I've ever had! If you get take out, ask for the dressing on the side. They always put too much in my take-out dish.

I absolutely love this place:) spicy chicken is my fav! I have tried the coconut shrimp also another favorite! The costumer service is on point! Even calling an order in is almost always ready when I get there.

  • Stephanie G.

This place is great for $6! I get their spicy chicken. It comes with about 8oz of spicy chicken, about a cup of white rice and a salad with delicious salad dressing. More then enough to fill you up and feel satisfied after the meal. I have also had their reguslar Teryaki Chicken, also good. Also cheap. My husband and I will order two meals and feed our family of 4 for $12. Cheaper then fast food. So yummy and healthy. :)

I mostly order the salmon teriyaki here but I decided to try the new Jap Chae and believe me, I wasn't disappointed! I nearly ate the entire order in one sitting and there's enough food there for three meals. Jap chae is a Korean noodle dish. The noodles are listed on the menu as "potato noodles" which sounds like they would be heavier noodles, but they are more in the category of lighter glass noodles. The dish is nicely seasoned with sesame oil & sesame seeds (just enough for good flavor; not too oily) and served with grilled broccoli, cabbage, onions and, in my case, chicken. All served over rice. Hot sauce on the side. Outstanding.

I'm just rating their chicken-beef combo dish. when I ordered and got my plate here, I immediately conjured up memories of horrendous meals I would get from the Flame Broiler chain back in soCal. I can see the appeal of an honest and simple asian food joint, but this place doesn't really fit that label for me, its really just so-so food at cheap prices. the food simply didn't leave me with much satisfaction at the end of my meal. -the chicken was way too sweet and this really felt like it was prepared in the most basic manner possible, but with very little to the meat. the teriyaki chicken tasted like it was just chicken+water+teriyaki+frying pan. -beef was of the bulgogi type, but a bit more fatty, and cooked in the same sauce. I think this place just ladles out the teriyaki from a large drum for all of their dishes, thus little differentiation in flavors across meats. -the salad accompanying this plate was a roughly mashed up lettuce and dry carrot slivers. the sesame dressing here is a saving grace, but it could only do so much. **overall the teriyaki here is fair, but to me, there is very little to the dishes that would lend it a kitschy or unique food character. the food is simply 'meh' and it doesn't really trigger any cravings when I think about it.

I love little hole-in-the-wall places that serve up some cheap, yummy and generous portions of grub! If you're looking for one of these in the Sunnyside-Clackamas area, do not pass this place up! It's really close to the Clackamas Town Center Mall and Kaiser. In fact, it's right off the 205 S freeway once you exit off Sunnyside! You can order your food to-go or you can dine-in. Another option is to call in your order, so by the time you get there, your food is ready! I ordered the Spicy Pork Plate - (which comes in Spicy Chicken flavor as well if you don't feel like eating pork): the meal was 1/2 salad (with their sweet-flavorful salad dressing, which I will get to in a bit) and the other half was with white rice (I'm not sure if they do a brown rice option for those who like options) and the grilled pork with the spicy sauce. I have a low-spicyness tolerance because I don't really eat spicy foods too often, this was pretty mild in a level of spiciness, so for those who like the heat, you may want to add a bit more of chili or what not. So you know that salad dressing I was talking about earlier? The one that was on my Spicy Pork lunch plate? Yea that one! Well turns out that if you really like it, they sell it by the bottle for $6. I bought two bottles after my trip there. And it wasn't all for me, but I shared a bottle for a friend who recommended the place and was craving the salad dressing as well. Since then, I've been eating salad with the dressing every night since it was that yummy. I'll be back again to try some of the other options they have on their lunch menu and for more salad dressing! This place is a gem!

I love this place! Great korean-style teriyaki, the rice is always good quality, and who could skip the salad dressing!? I heard they just started carrying bibimbap too? I'm in love!

Not bad but not great. Just sort of exactly what you'd expect for these prices at this kind of place.

Delicious, cheap, friendly. I worked for Kaiser, and all of my co-workers raved about it. I was always too poor to go there, but once we weren't so poor anymore, we tried it and absolutely loved it. We moved from Clackamas to Gresham this year, and Yay for us! There's a Soy Grill over here! We've tried just about everything on the menu and it's all delicious. We come home from a very long drive for work, and when we're not in the mood to go out or cook, Soy Grill it is!

Always great food. We enjoy the teriyaki all white meat chicken and yakisoba with chicken.

It saddens me to see is fine little establishment has met so far w/such "meh" reviews so far! As with everything else on Yelp, the old Roman saying applies "de gustibus non est disputandum" (roughly translated, "There's no point in arguing over matters of taste--- it's all completely subjective"). Even so. Even so. On to my oh-so-important 2 cents.... Beloved reader, do bear in mind I have only ever sampled Soy Grill on a carry-out basis. The place is so small and busy, and w/such limited hours open. I can't imagine taking family or a group for dine-in and then trying to compare/judge it with larger, full service facilities w/all the amenities. Wouldn't be fair. Wouldn't make sense. With that in mind, on to the good news.... Love love LOVE their grub! In particular, their Yakisobi noodles, grilled chicken and beef and salmon, their shrimp fried rice, their ribs, good Lord what's NOT to love??? So incredibly tasty and filling! And their in-house hot sauce--the orange kind, in the big plastic bottles? I make sure to buy a bottle or two when I go in, to keep the party going at home, for weeks to come... It is a blessing to have Soy Grill so close by to work. There are many other options nearby on the Sunnyside strip, and as a graveyard shift guy, I wish more of them stayed open later---especially Soy Grill! That's about the only complaint I have so far about the place. As for what they are designed to do, what they were put on God's green earth for: to deliver delicious, reasonably-priced carry out fast, they definitely get it RIGHT. !Viva Soy Grill!

Made me sick, literally When I first started eating here I though it was great. Around the third visit I started experiencing stomach problems after eating here. I didn't think too much of it at first. After giving it two more chances and then one more, last one was the final go. I was up all night with stomach aches and threw up this morning. I'm sorry but I am never eating here again. If no one else has this issue it could just be my stomach can't digest something they use. But that was my experience.

Great food, great price what more could you ask? The decor is your typical hole in the wall Teriyaki joint so I suggest take-out but the food is great.

  • Rebecca H.

Soy Grill opened not too long ago. It's ok. For 6 bucks you get chicken, beef, pork or salmon teriyaki, a strange rectangle of rice, and iceberg lettuce with soy miso poppy dressing. Does it sound mediocre? It is. They have other stuff, like egg rolls and miso soup, but eh, it all just seems blah. The inside of the place is blah, the food is blah. The people are nice. The lady who runs it is named Sunny, as she says, "You know, like outside, sun, day is sunny, I am Sunny." There were lots of people sitting in the waiting chairs, getting take out, and I felt self conscious eating in front of all of them and them seeing me drop food in my lap. Soy Grill Teriyaki = blah.

  • Mike M.

C'mon, this hole in the wall Teriyaki joint takes me back to Seattle! Its hard to find good teriyaki here in SE Portland, and if you are looking for a good meal, large portion, and great value, you can't beat Soy Grill. Believe me, I've looked! Best to order ahead and pick it up as the seating is limited and lines are long. Cheers.

I agree, a solid three. Tastes like strip mall korean, only with no added MSG. I had grilled tofu teriyaki, a side of kimchi and miso soup. The grilled tofu teriyaki tasted like grilled tofu teriyaki. Actually, the teriyaki part was a party in my mouth at first, but probably just because i was dying of hunger. The kimchi was sufficiently spicy. The miso was nothing special. The takeout menu doesn't say anything about a salad being included, but it is. So is rice. The service was pretty good. There's nice-ish seating inside. They didn't forget to pack napkins, a fork and a spoon for my to-go order (that's right, taco bell: normal people don't forget those things). They'll deliver with a minimun order of $40.00. I'll probably end up going here again in the future, but there are a ton of other great places in the area I have to try first.

This is the go-to place for teriyaki, just because it is so close and fairly priced. I've only ever had teriyaki from one other place and that place is no longer open. I've also had Korean BBQ made by my boyfriend's Korean mother - delicious! That all being said, Soy Grill is "a-ok", hence the 3-star rating. Sometimes I think there is too much sauce and I don't like the salad. And it always feels so heavy in my tummy. I always enjoy it while I eat it, but it just makes me feel so blah afterwards and for so long, so I'm kind of torn. I usually order beef (spicy) or the salmon or tofu with no salad. My boyfriend gets the spicy pork. Again, it's good, just not an everyday meal.

Spicey Chicken Teriyaki is nice. People there are nice but I wouldn't eat there. Best to get it to go and call ahead or you may be waiting a while. Prices for the food are ok but dont' buy a drink there unless you like paying $2.50 for a sobe. Eaten there 3 times and each visit has been the same.

This is our favorite teriyaki fast food. You can't compare it to a full-service restaurant, but for what you get, its great! Friendly service and good portions. We get the chicken, spicy chicken or chicken and beef combo. Huge amount of rice and salad. Ask for the dressing on the side if you're taking out, otherwise your salad could get soggy. The salad dressing is really good. They even sell it by the bottle! Chicken is tender and flavorful. We're not talking gourmet here, but for $6 - $8, its very good!

The Soy Grill in Gresham is incredible- succulant and fresh tasting meats, crisp salads and a really good sauce- this Soy Grill however, was dry, old, and pretty gross...2 stars simply because it was a vague shadow of it's delicious Gresham sibling.
