Mexican Cuisine
If you enjoy Taco Tuesday, then you have officially fallen in love with the Mexican Food. The main grain of Mexican cuisine is maize. Also known as corn, maize is grown for the past 9000 years after the crop was discovered by the people in Mayan civilization. Mexican empire flourished when they started growing beans, tomatoes, chili pepper, sweet potato and cactus. Till this date these ingredients are used in cooking authentic Mexican dishes and drinks.
Great use of spices, fresh chili pepper dishes like fajitas, tortilla chips, corn chips, salsa, chimichangas, burritos, nachos and quesadillas are invented in America. But when you are looking for authentic Mexican food then you must find a restaurant in the city that serves Rajas con Queso, Garbanzo in a Guajillo Chile Sauce, Pork Filled Chiles Rellenos, Chiles en Nogada, Molcajete Salsa, Pico de Gallo and Frijoles de la Olla. An eye-opening fact – Mexican don't like their food hot. They use fresh chili and other spices to create a flavor that lingers in your mouth.
Mexican food is great for those who are Gluten Intolerant as they use Corn instead of wheat in most of their dishes. Also, you can easily find many beans based Mexican dishes. Another dish which didn't get similar glory as tacos or nachos is the Mexican hot chocolate. If you love something hot on a chilly day, then go for Mexican Hot Chocolate. On merry days, you can enjoy the authentic Mexican Drinks like Tequila, Mezcal, Tecuí, Sotol, Bacanora, Charanda, Posh O Pox, Puebla and Pulque. Mexican Cuisine is for people who enjoy strong drinks and hearty meals.

Some visits everything is great, other visits things are just okay. This visit the food was great, our main waiter was very attentive, and made some very good recommendations. I like their chips, they are always warm, salsa isn't bad. I wasn't wild about the Honeydew Margarita, it was well made, there was enough tequila in it, I just didn't like the honeydew flavoring, I'm a flavor snob, I was hoping for real honeydew, not artificial flavoring. We will most likely be back on our next trip to Brookings.

I've eaten here several times. I'm a creature of habit so I always get the same thing, enchilada suisa with chicken, and it is great. Friendly service. Once they got my wife's order wrong and they changed it without a fuss and were apologetic. I alternate between this place and pancho's across the street. Not the most authentic but I enjoy it.

i have to admit, the staff is super friendly and attentive. and the chips and salsa were okay. but the meal...we weren't that crazy about it. i ordered a chicken tostado - the fresh lettuce, cheese, tomatoes, sour cream, and guacamole were not hot, as they should be, but the chicken and beans were not hot at all either, which they should have been. and the 'crispy' tortilla was not crispy in the least, it was soggy, it just fell apart...ugh. the whole beans in the tostada tasted bland. hubby's ground beef enchilada and tacos were without much flavor, as were the rice and refried beans.

I usually go to Pancho's but they were PACKED and I had two hungry kids so I decided to go to Rancho instead. Next time I'll wait for a table. The food was mediocre at best. Greasy. I feel like there is a giant ball of grease in my tummy. Not fresh at all. The service was terrible. I asked for sour cream and guacamole when the food got to the table and didn't see the waitress again till I asked for my check. At one point I had to go find her. It just sucked. I'll never go again. Ever.

Salsa was the best. The food was average. The service was the worst. I got margarita in a hot glass. It must have been just washed. Attempted to get a second salsa but it was forgotten twice. Even getting the bill took forever.

My wife and I eat here just about every week. When we walk in, they immediately recognize us and suggest our usual drink and food selections. Service doesn't get better than that. Sometimes it can be on the slow side if the restaurant is full, but they are always very friends. I usually get the chimichangas or the pollo asado. The asado plate is HUGE! My wife likes their chili releno combo. You do sometimes have to remind them when you are ready to go, it is as easy as walking up to the register. This is our favorite restaurant in Brookings for consistently good food and service.

I really like this place. The food is authentic and very good! Staff is also very pleasant and accommodating. The only thing I would suggest is that you could have put just a little more hootch in my Margarita. Thank you for a great meal; we will be back (many times)!

I have tried all the Mexican places in brookings now and I think this is my favorite so far ...I really want to go back and try more items before I can really rate this place as of right now im totally a fan...I had the rancho Viejo burrito and my hubby had a chimichanga and an enchilada all the food was pretty good...also im super picky about my salsa and theirs was pretty good not spicy enough for me but on request they tried to accomadate with a spicier chile (which still wasnt spicy enough lol but its never spicy enough anywhere) I really appreciated that. My caddy was also good. Cant wait to go back and try other items

If you like cheese, this is the place for you! Everything is smothered with it!

This is our second visit, boy was this one disappointing. The good, decent portions at a reasonable price. We were seated quickly and our orders were taken. The bad, We had to ask 3x for utensils and napkins. My husband and son received their drinks but she forgot mine. Our food came out one at a time. Our food arrived before our utensils so we had to wait to eat. They forgot our tortillas completely. My husband's steak was cut into 4 times to check for doneness. ( we hope by the cook ?) It was served completely raw all around the bone so he spoke to the manager, because we couldn't find our waitress. Even though 2 out of 3 of our meals were good the wait time for napkins, utensils, drinks , refills and condiments made it an unpleasant dinner. Will pass on by next time.

I come here about once a week. I have eaten several different things and have never been disappointed. Their staff is awesome and friendly. Everything bursts with flavor! Prices are very affordable!

This restaurant is a delight. I knew when the salsa and chips came out and the salsa made your mouth water. Service was pleasant and quick. Friendly people and food was great.

Viejo means old just like the slop they're serving up here at the Old Ranch, giant portions, carne asada steak was tougher than shoe leather but big portions, what a sad choice of Mex-good here, Cielito Lindo is the most authentic of them all and affordable and no tips...

Food was just OK. Order taken promptly, but it took forever to get the food. There were four of us, two meals came then a couple of minutes later another one, short wait then the last.

I love Rancho Viejo. They are one of my favorite Mexican restaurants I have been to, and I frequently dine here with my parents when I'm in town. I usually get a bean and cheese chimichanga with beans and rice on the side. Before I was a vegetarian I always used to order the Pollo a la Crema (not sure on the spelling). It is absolutely delicious. -Sometimes the service is slow, but usually I don't mind if I'm in good company. -The staff is friendly. -Huge menu -Good cabage salsa (you have to ask for it. It's best when freshly made and sometimes can taste weird if it isn't, but when it IS fresh, mannnnn! it is delicious) -Awesome salsa -At the end of every meal they provide each person with a cinnamon and sugar tortilla chip with whipped cream and strawberry sauce on top.

My friend and I really loved it here: ) The service is great. The waitress is really nice. I also liked the food I ordered, the price is reasonable.

I was taken here with some friends. Service was so slow, it took forever to even take our order....and then the wait for food seemed like forever! I guess the others were happy with their food. I ordered chicken mole...usually one of my favorite dishes. It was really not good. I brought a fair amount home and fed it to my chickens because I didn't want to eat the leftovers. Mole is supposed to be a really yummy, warm, intense sauce made from lots of roasted peppers and about a hundred other ingredients. Each restaurant seems to have their own version, but this mole was almost like eating jam. It was extremely sweet. There are several other Mexican restaurants in town, so I doubt I'll be back....unless somebody insists we eat there again. Hope not!

This is THE first Mexican food joint I have given 4 stars to. I would give it 4.5, but alas, that is not an option. Chips/salsa are very good. I think we ate 6 baskets between 5 people and they kept bringing them out. My buddy's Pollo Asada y Mas plate looked amazing. I had 2 tacos, rice and beans and I could have eaten two orders. It really is quite good. Heck, the rice and beans alone are good enough to make a meal of. Very authentic. Between Santa Rosa, CA and the Oregon border, Mexican food is lacking, but Rancho Viejo does it right. The complimentary cinnamon tortilla thingy at the end of the meal is a nice bonus. Can't wait to go back.

The chips are good. The wait staff are friendly and speak Spanish. The food is ok for the price. Given we're in rural Oregon, we recommend eating here.
(3)Ben K.
Good Mexican food and not bad prices. Huge menu with just about every type of Mexican dish. Not many options of meat but lots of seafood. No idea what else you can get in brookings but this is probably a safe bet.

Taco bell on a plate.........ok service.......salsa is better than average......

Rancho Viejo has an extensive (and annoying) menu. Annoying due to a huge number of distracting advertisements that make the menu hard to read. The food is decent, though, and the platters large. The margaritas, while large, are mediocre being made with a mix rather than from scratch.
(3)Robin G.
One of my least favorite places to eat in Brookings... Food is heavy and service is slow slow slow.... I have friends who like to go there so I go with them... I've tried different items and nothing has ever tasted good to me... I find the space to be messy and tight. I think Pancho's across the street is way better for value as well as flavors.....
(2)Sharon M.
This has to be the worst Mexican food we've ever had! Ordered a combo plate with chile rellano, beef enchilada and tostada. Another person ordered a Chimichanga and couldn't eat it either. Service was good, but that's about the only good thing I can say about this restaurant.

This is the first restaurant in my entire life I have ever walked out of. Horrible service and ants at the table.

Best salsa, huge margaritas, friendly staff, love their shrimp dishes!
(5)Germo J.
I used to eat here but sadly to say because of the nice people I'm walking. When you order nachos you don't get traditional nachos they are nacho lasagna one big mushy layer of stuff. Don't bother picking it up use a knife and fork. Today 11/16/11 I ordered fish tacos and got FISH STICK tacos ! That's all folks I'm a walking !

This is a very good Mexican Restaurant. The atmosphere has a real Mexican feel. Very good food, very good service, and very good value. Also a convenient location right on 101.

I had a patient rave about their cabbage salsa... now I know why he travels from Gold Beach to eat here. I wish I had discovered this Mexican Cantina when I first moved to Brookings. I am a big Mexican food fan and this place doesn't disappoint. They have a huge menu with a great variety of traditional Mexican dishes and some creative ones like shrimp wrapped in bacon. So many to choose from I just pointed to the picture of a Carnitas Mixta plate, It was a good as the picture made it look, it had huge shrimp, scallops, and fish with a fajita mix of onions and bell peppers piled on a plate with beans and rice. Toddler had a crisp quesidilla ooozing with cheese.... yum. Service was good with Sergio's authentic Mexican accent adding to our enjoyment. We were surprised by the little desert at the end, little tortillas with cinnamon sugar topped with whip creme and strawberry sauce. The 3 people at the table next to us ordered all ordered the shrimp wrapped in bacon and appeared to be regulars. ole'

i give them 3 stars for their strawberry daiquiris! decent amount of alcohol in them too! but my sister in law and her husband got stomach sick from eating there so the next time we went, we only went for the daiquiris!

Great selection of seafood, with langostino enchiladas, scallops sauteed in butter, and awesome seafood chimichangas in green sauce. We get good food in SF and wanted good seafood, not deep fried, with a little bit of atmosphere. We really enjoyed this place -- excellent food, good service, nice atmosphere, and bargain prices.
(5)Barbara N.
Love the cabage salsa!!!!!!! Great food and great prices! But when placing a to go order it wad very hard to understand the person taking our order. Going in and eating is much better than getting food to go.

Overall good, sturdy mexican food. Nothing fancy, but the food had good flavor. In all honesty one of the best places to eat in Brookings. Three of us ate there. The pork enchilada plate was good with a mildly spicy green sauce, the crab enchiladas were decent, no imitation crab and it tasted like dungenous also with a green sauce and nicely ripened sliced avocado. The Carnes de res was excellent and a very big portion. It was lightly seasoned and sauted with onions, bell peppers, and tomatoes served with fresh guacamole and hand made flour tortillas. They have a variety of unique margarita flavors including honeydew and kiwi. For a nice surprise when they bring the bill you are given fried flat bread with sugar and cinnamon topped with whipped cream and strawberry topping.
