I don't know if I came on a good night or what but I don't understand all the bad reviews this place was pretty good. ..my mom was visiting and my husband thought the name was so cool ( for some reason) he had to eat here. ... he had a steak as well as my mom they were cooked pretty good (and I'm super picky with steak) my kids had burgers a little over cooked but still pretty good. .. they finished with no complaints. I had Kung pao chicken which was OK but the worst thing we ordered but still it was OK ...they serve awesome drinks and service was great I give four stars because I am a fan so far and will be back ! Oh and the cart is awesome lol Gordon Ramsey would sh*t himself but it's all good for now. ..

The Moo Gai Pan is excellent at the Onion Grill. We also enjoyed the grilled shrimp with a baked potato. But so far my favorite is the Moo Shoo Chicken with sweet plum sauce. Maybe next time we will try the American food.

Why is this place allowed to remain open??? I went to this place because I like trying new things and it looked like it could be a hidden gem. I walk in, and I'm told I can sit where ever. I grabbed my own menu and sat down. After looking at the menu, I don't see any of the Asian food i was expecting. That's when I find out they have a separate menu for that. Odd, but whatever. I order the cod sandwich and rib eye steak with a baked potato, and a drink. I didn't get my drink until the food arrived. The cod was cold, and dry without any seasoning, tasted very bland. Seemed like it was cooked first, and then sat out while the steak was being cooked. The potato was dry, and arrived still wrapped in foil. The steak was cooked per order (good) but was also very bland, no seasoning at all. Even the A-1 sauce didn't help much. The even more odd part was the way they serve and clear tables. They use a plastic cart. I watched one waiter (with only 2 glasses of water) walk over to one cart, set the glasses on it, then push the cart the last 6 feet to the table to deliver the water. I also observed the old lady working there put fresh plates of food on her cart, and on the way to deliver it, stopped at one table, picked up the dirty dishes from a table that was just vacated, put it on the cart, and then delivered the food to the waiting people. REALLY???? When it was time for me to have my order taken....the lady wheeled her cart over to me, full of dirty plates. Yeah that's appetizing. As I said earlier, I like trying new things, and as a result....... It doesn't always work out. Be afraid of this place, be very afraid.

The place looks a bit run down, but the food was great and the service was good. I would def come back again.

Arrived 20 minutes before closing and they were happy to serve us without feeling rushed. Enjoyed the evening! Good food!

Just basic food, nothing special. Have tried on a few occasions, usually for something quick. It serves a basic need but there are far better options with just a little digging.

I'm quite surprised by all of the negative reviews. What's sad is that those reviews actually deterred me from coming here, but I'm glad that I finally came in and gave it a try. The parking lot is usually packed and there's a lot of locals that come here. The steak dinner I had was very good & inexpensive. It came with a starch side and veggies (or grilled onions if you like that instead) and a choice of soup or salad. I was very pleased with meal and will most definitely be back to try something else.

whenever we had driven by, the parking lot was pretty full. last night it was packed, as was the restaurant when we walked in. there were only 2-3 tables available.we could see the servers scurrying about, so we knew why our meals took so long. hubby's fish and chips were GOOD. the cocktail sauce and tartar sauce were excellent. i had the south of the border burger - and while the burger was cooked almost to a cinder, it tasted great with the bacon, fried jalapenos, and pepper jack cheese. those condiments made the burger. then, we splurged and shared a slice of their big chocolate cake, with 6-7 layers. omg, it was delicious.

So me and my little brother wanted to explore and stumbled upon this onion grill place. There's too much to say about it so I will cut things short and sum it down for y'all. Don't go there! We were the very first customers there at 11am, and it took about 45min to get our burger and prawns. There was hair in my bowl of white rice, a long strand of hair coming out of my brothers cup of water, and I ordered the honey walnut prawns, and the prawns were sour. We left most of our meal the same way we got it and left. Be very careful of this place yelpers..

Well, we've been going here for quite a while. The food is really good. The service, not so. When we sat down, the waitress took our drink order. Five minutes later she came back and asked, did I take your drink order. We ordered an appetizer. Did not ever see it (but happily was not on the bill either). Ordered Ranch on my salad. Got Bleu Cheese. I believe the food here is what keeps people coming back, but to keep the place open they're going to need to seriously look at service. People aren't asking for complicated, multicourse orders......just the basics. And a business loses money when they can't perform the basics. We'll be back. We really enjoy the steaks. We'll send an update in the Spring.

We came on Valentines Day, on a Friday night and it was pretty busy. That said, the service was unreasonably slow. We sat for awhile before getting menus and could tell all the people sitting around us were pissed off for all different reasons. One couple's lobster was raw, another family was being verbally loud and obvious about waiting to put their order in and another table was waiting around for their check. The waitress brought the people with the raw lobster their check and it was obviously the first time she had spoken with them since dropping off their food. So I knew this was not going to be a good dining experience and contemplated leaving before putting our order in. It didn't turn out too bad. I had sweet and sour chicken with pork fried rice and friend shrimp my fiancé had a tofu and vegetable dish. It wasn't awful, but it wasn't good. Everything just tasted like it was old and cooked from frozen. We were looking for a nice date night restaurant and ended up just going home hoping we wouldn't get sick.

Service was very good. I ordered the Surf & Turf, which was excellent. My only complaint was that I ordered my steak cooked medium and it came to me well done. Fortunately, the steak was still very tender, so it wasn't an issue worth sending it back.

In case anyone missed me for the last 5 weeks I was back in Brookings, OR doing my thing. Of couse I had a great time and well, I am starting to run out of new places to eat and drink. I tend to be a creature of habit. I stopped by the Onion Grill that is right on 101 a couple of times for lunch. Mixed feelings on the food... Not bad, but not great either. Service was and is very friendly... but honeslty I've come to expect only really nice service from any place in Brookings because the people are just so special. They have two menus. One is Chinesse and one is classice diner american food. Its sorta strange at first, but they make it work. I wasn't impressed with the Chinesse food and I took a safe choice because I figured who can mess up chow mein. Guess when if you use top ramen noodles in chow mein you can sorta kinda mess it up. At least that is my opinion. Second time I ordered chicken tenders... why I ordered chicken tenders I couldn't say. I don't think I have ever ordered those before anywhere I have eaten. The tenders were tender.. but the dipping sause of honey mustard was sorta icky. Wow on the surface this sounds like a bad review... but really it isn't. They have a ton of regulars, cater to families and the senior crowd and good prices. Next visit if someone wanted me to go with them I would return.

A bunch of friends went to dinner here tonight. We try a different restaurant in Brookings every Friday night. Just from the outside appearance, I was not drawn to the place, but one of my friends had eaten here and really liked it. I will agree with the other reviewers that the owner is a wonderful, cheerful woman and I would like to support her business. But, I will never eat at the Onion again. I ordered the junior dinner of sweet and sour pork with chicken fried rice. It was cold when it arrived. The pork was deep fried, hard, and cold. The rice tasted like rancid oil...no seasonings, with bits of dried out chicken and a couple of pieces of green onion. I tried to spice it up with hot chili oil, but again, the oil tasted rancid and it wasn't hot. I managed to eat all the pork because I hadn't eaten all day and i was hungry, but the rice was really inedible. There are 2 menus...a Chinese menu and an American menu. There was absolutely nothing on the American menu that appealed to me at all...especially since this is a glorified Denny's. Another person at the table ordered won tons. They were undercooked, so she didn't eat them. The friend that suggested eating there got Wor Won Ton Soup. She thought it was good. She gave me some, and honestly, it was the most flavorless soup I've ever tasted. I've eaten Wor Won Ton soup before that was delicious. This was not worth eating. I've been eating Chinese food since I was in a high chair as a baby. This place is awful.

Went here for the first time while visiting friends in May and wasn't at all impressed. Thought about giving it a second chance on my most recent visit but really couldn't bring myself to do it. The locals seem to really like this place but it's probably because the owner is a friendly happy lady who makes your visit quite memorable.

OMG NEVER EVER EVER GO THERE. my husband and i read yelp reviews and decided to check it out. the reviews said they were serving whole dungeness crab which is what i was in the mood for. when we were seated at our table, the woman who was cleaning out a table next to us took two water glasses from that table that were full of water and gave them to us. of course i was grossed out and did not touch it. we asked the waitress when she finally came to us if they were serving crab and she said no. that was our reason/excuse to leave. as we were getting up to leave the same waitress took our waters and gave it to the people at the table next to us. OK TELL ME THAT WAS NOT GROSS.

Seriously consider going to the taco bell next door instead. To start out with, there are too many options. For 3 people we had 6 menus on our table. We may not have found this irritating if they hadn't been on our table over ten minutes while we waited for water and to get our order taken. There was hardly anyone in the restaurant so the delay was even more frustrating. The reason for this delay was the one employee (maybe even owner). While she was very nice, that did not make up for her slow service and very forgetful nature. It took several minutes in between requests before we would receive the water, silverware, soup we had requested. The food, when it finally came, was just OK. The chow mien was mostly ramen, and even though my entree specifically said it came with rice she asked me if I wanted it when she brought it out. Then I had to wait about 5 minutes for her to remember to bring it out. Like another reviewer said, there are far better options out there, find them.

I hope that my visit was not the norm but I did not have a great experience with the food. The staff is very nice! If they bring their food up to par it would be great! I had been wanting to eat here for quite some time, so my husband and I went, for a date night together. Our waitress was super friendly and sweet and even Letty came out to check on us, but our food was just....disappointing. I ordered the Crab salad, and my husband ordered a sampler plate of shrimp, calamari, etc. Well, living on the coast, a person KNOWS what good seafood is. My crab was so bland. It had no flavor at all. It tasted like water with salt on it! To me, it seemed like frozen crab, unacceptable on the coast! I barely ate any of my salad, I would have had to drown it in dressing to tolerate it. My husbands plate was just greasy and I did not think the seafood was fresh. Too rubbery and dripping with oil. We were definitely disappointed, and since we both had bad dishes, not just one of us, we vowed not to return. Sorry Letty, again you have a great staff, but I was not impressed with the quality of food.

Food is always good but the service can be slow on a Friday / Saturday night so plan on a long sit dinner, no quick in and out dinner on those nights.

I lived in the SF Bay Area for 25 years, and being in marketing, I ate lots of Chinese food up and down the peninsula and in San Francisco. I know good Chinese. Now, being in Brookings, my expectations were set appropriately low. I wasn't expecting great Chinese, just competent and had the Onion been competent, I would have given it a "4", but it wasn't. Not that it was all bad, just that the bad was so bad, that it overwhelmed any good. THE GOOD My wife had the fish and chips which, like almost any restaurant along the West Coast was good. Not the best she ever had, but good. One of our friends had the chicken and mushrooms and it was good. THE BAD I ordered the $13.95 calamari and vegetables. My expectation from my other dining experiences was that I would get at least 1/2 calamari and in many restaurants, mostly calamari. What I received was a plate of overcooked vegetables with 10 - 1" x 1/4" pieces of calamari weighing less than an ounce. But that was a blessing because my 1st bite of the precious calamari yielded a strong odor and taste of ammonia. It had gone bad and they were still serving it. Ditto for the calamari on our other friend's dish of mixed seafood and tofu. THE UGLY I asked our waitress (and I think owner) Letti if there was a mistake in my order as it appeared that I had been served just vegetables. She spent minutes digging through my plate to pull out all 10 micro-pieces of calamari to prove that there was some in the dish. The appropriate response that I have received on the 2 occasions over the past 25 years that I have complained about my food was to say "I'm sorry, let me take it back and have the chef make it right" Not at the Onion - it seemed that Letti was more interested in proving that she was right about having some calamari in the dish than making it right. At the end of the meal when the only thing on 2 plates was calamari, Letti asked if we were taking the calamari home. When we told her it was spoiled, she giggled and said that she would have to tell the chef. Most restaurateurs are so embarrassed when they are informed that they served tainted food that they at least knock the tainted order off of the check - not at the Onion - you pay full price for tainted food. I'm not going back!

Stopped in for lunch on our journey down the coast and I would not recommend this place at all. To say the food was mediocre would be a compliment (and I'm not a picky eater at all). The Onion Grill offers 2 menus: an American food menu (steaks, seafood, burgers, salads, sandwiches, etc.) and a Chinese food menu (all the Chinese fare you'd expect from a Chinese restaurant). I opted for a patty melt and my boyfriend went with their lunch special of chicken with lo mein. The patty melt tasted like a microwaved, cheap burger patty (nothing like the Angus patty used in the description) and the accompanying fries were luke warm and tasteless. My boyfriend's chicken lo mein tasted dirty like the vegetables hadn't been washed or the food was cooked in a pan used to cook another dish, but the gross taste was overwhelming. It was the absolute worst Chinese food either of us have ever eaten. Our waitress was very sweet, bless her heart, but extremely forgetful and the restaurant wasn't even busy at all while we were there. It took 3 reminders over 15 minutes to get our drinks, and multiple attempts for ranch dressing (to make the french fries somewhat more edible). Next time through Brookings we'll stay clear of this place and try someplace different for sure.

Stopped in again tonight at about 7:30, the place was 3/4 packed with locals. I could tell they were locals by the way the staff interacted with the customers as friends. We had our same server Barbara, very friendly and accommodating to the toddler. I ordered off the specials board their Chinese New Year Ginger and green onion crab, a whole Dungeonous crab that covered the plate and they said was 2+ pounds steamed with a mild green onion and fresh nickle size slices of ginger. YUM! It came with a side of steam rice and steamed asparagus drizzled with oyster sauce. I was very impressed when Barbara brought me a finger bowl of warm water with a wedge of lemon, a very San Francisco Seafood House touch, nothing I would expect in Brookings. Ex German BF had the cowboy cut Prime Rib, very tender and flavourful, the huge potato and fresh steamed veggies. Both ours came with a choice of soup or salad. I upped my rating to 5 stars because this place is consistent with their quality & freshness of food and it seems to be a favourite among locals.
