7 years in Bend and today was my first time to Sargent's Cafe. A true American Breakfast Cafe. Service exceeded expectations set by other reviewers and the food was what you would expect from a breakfast cafe; oversized portions of great food at the right price. We left happy, full and with money in the pocket!

This is, hands down, the best breakfast in Bend. The menu is vast, the prices are very affordable, and the food is classic, home-cooked fare that tastes like it was made with love. My chicken-fried steak with pork gravy was one of my meal highlights for the year, and my companion's Reuben melt was excellent. If I had any complaint it was that the hash browns were cut a bit thick for my taste, but still tasty and my companion loved them. It's the cheapest breakfast in town, and also the tastiest. I will never dine for breakfast anywhere else again. This place is a local institution that actually deserves that distinction, unlike what Jake's has become in recent years.

Best breakfast in town!! So many regulars it's like eating with family!!! All the servers fill your coffee and the place is always packed! So glad my girlfriend told me about this place!!! Sorry for you people that had a bad experience, it's never been nothing but great food and friendly service for me and my family EVERY time!!

Very inexpensive. Moderate flavor. But very inexpensive. Good for fueling up real quick. Good for an authentic presentation of the ambient culture in Bend. You can get an omelet with pancakes for under $10.

I bought the turkey club for pickup and I can't tell you how disappointed I was. The little bit of turkey that was on the sandwich was so dry that it literally tastes like tuna. I've tried this place a couple of times and the food has almost always disappointed me. Not going to give the food another chance.

Yucky!! Stopped in here for breakfast they were kinda busy so didn't mind having to wait just to order. I ordered a pancake and a side of biscuits and gravy, husband got 2 banana pancakes bacon eggs and hash browns. Had to wait between 30-45 min for the food. I got (and charged) for 2 pancakes my husband got his strawberry pancakes? Then told we ordered strawberry, nope sorry. Banana pancakes come back out, NORMAL pancakes with about 5 little slices on bananas on top. Biscuits and gravy were horrible, eggs were cold, pancakes were plain. Hash browns and bacon were good! Service kinda sucked. Overall very disappointed.
Sargent's Cafe is THE perfect place for breakfast in Bend!! If you are looking for a diner with great food and friendly service, you won't find a better spot. My wife and I stopped in during a weekend trip and lived the old-school diner atmosphere. On a Sunday the place was packed with locals, all enjoying traditional diner food at a great price. I had the Lava Bear - meatloaf on an English muffin, smothered in sausage gravy. My wife had eggs, bacon and pancakes. You really can't go wrong here if you are looking for good food in a historic diner setting. It was a perfect way to end our weekend.

I don't leave many reviews but this time people deserve to know, the food is pretty bad. We had a very friendly waitress, great service, really cute place. but even the pancakes were terrible. My mom's ham was almost to tough to cut. Enter at your own risk.

The service was so slow. I waited over 45 minutes for my breakfast and it tasted like what I imagine dog food tastes like.

They have a pancake to end all pancakes. The sweet cream pancake is amazing. I'd give the place a 4 for food but a 5 for service. Stacey is a great server and very friendly. Old school feel. Plenty of space for bigger families.

Maybe I went in expecting more than I got or maybe I caught them on an off day. Either way, the food was good and the folks were nice but I didn't walk away as wowed as I had hoped. We took the kids in for breakfast on a Friday morning and it seemed like it was pretty busy at around 9:30am. Wait staff was pretty attentive and came around with the coffee refills on a pretty frequent basis. I'm a fan of older diners, greasy spoons, and general basic American style breakfast places and this joint seemed to fit the bill. I got the country fried steak while the kids got some French toast and a cheese omelet. The CFS had ample gravy and the eggs were cooked well. French toast disappeared quite readily as did the omelet. So why not higher stars? Well, they brought the wrong toast out (not a big miss so not a huge loss) and ALL of our hash browns were burnt and overdone. Those items combined knocked them down a tad. Next time I'm in Bend I think I will try it out again and see if I'm missing something or if I had an off experience.

Rarely have I gone into a cafe for breakfast, given my order, and gotten EXACTLY what I ordered. Corned beef hash with two eggs over medium, crisp hash brown and sour dough toasted - not just warmed. Everything was wonderful. An amazing combination of favors done to perfection!! Service was fast, friendly and with a smile. I will definitely be eating here the next time I'm in Bend.

Used to be my favorite place to get breakfast, went there recently and it took 45 min to even place our order then another 30min to get our food, understandable if it would have been BUSY!! But There were only a couple if people there. Find better help people they make your business look bad!!

I ordered their scrambled eggs special without the ground meat and they added broccoli and mushrooms as replacements. Wow! Cindy, our waitress, was attentive, and ensured our coffee cups were full. Meals were delivered promptly. Prices were very reasonable.

Sargent's Cafe is what I'd call an all American diner type place. While there's plenty of great ethnic food joints, sub shops and pizza parlors around, when you just want a great all around American restaurant this is THE place to go! Whether you want a great breakfast, or biscuits & sausage gravy, or something like meatloaf or chicken fried steak, Sargent's is where you need to eat. Great food, super nice staff, very clean and well kept too. Places like this are pillars of any community, and they're usually there to stay -- for good reason. You just can't go wrong with a well established place like Sargent's "Cafe" (a modern word for diner I suppose - only without all the old retro looks). I'm glad I went to this place, I'm sure you'll be glad too.

I get SUPER hungry a couple of days after a really long run so I went to Sargent's knowing they would have ALL the breakfast items I could possibly want! I ordered and then ordered more- I ordered enough in the end to feed 4 three year olds and the waitress way absolutely fabulous! I left saying over and over throughout the week that the waitresses in downtown restaurants should go to Sargent's for training!!

I don't know why it's taken me so long to come back here. What was I thinking? This could very well be one of the the best breakfast in town. Breakfast special (1/2 order Biscuits & Gravy, 2 links, 1 egg any style for just $4.95) Let me say that a half order of the Biscuits & Gravy is a meal in itself. The Chicken Fried Steak has an awesome crust. My daughter thinks their pancakes are the best. The wait staff is great. The kitchen is incredibly fast, and my coffee cup never got more than an inch down and it was topped off again. Sargent's serves up some real down home cooking and the friendly, personal atmosphere should be a model for all restaurants to mimic. You feel like your stepping back in time in this old style cafe, but I think that only adds to the appeal. Can't wait to come back. Salute

After reading the yelp reviews, I had high hopes for Sargent's. Unfortunately, the place is nothing like the description. This is a very plain diner with all usual entries. What I like about diners is that the service is usual friendly and fast, but it was neither . Food too forever to get to the table and I only saw the server to bring our food and the check. (She didn't even bring coffee until the food came and then never refilled it). Yes, it is cheap but the portions are small and the quality terrible. There are many other places in Bend that are equally cheap, but at least try to do a good job.

About ten years ago, a group of my friends from the University of Oregon planned a weekend in Sunriver, OR. I lost (broke, really) one or more of my cables (read, chains) in my earnest attempt to get there as quickly as possible. A friend (who later became my fraternity brother), Les, offered to take me to G.I. Joe's (a sporting goods store) in Sisters, OR for replacements. We stopped at Sargent's Cafe on the way back. It was there I lost my biscuits and gravy virginity. I know of no better place for real, thick, homemade sausage gravy and gigantic fluffy biscuits. In defense of other quality biscuits and gravy Meccas in the Pacific Northwest, I've moved back to Northern California, where homemade-quality high fat items on menus are pretty much outlawed unless they contain exotic or abnormal ingredients. The closest thing you can get to traditional biscuits and gravy in the Bay Area would be something like the following: whole wheat organic goat's milk creme fraiche biscuits with ostrich in a balsamic reduction gravy. Hey, it could happen! I've tried going back once or twice, but I was unable to find it on the internet. I thought the name was spelled as it is in the military (sergeant). Maybe it's someone's last name?

3rd Ave in Bend is like Aurora Ave in Seattle. You'll find car dealerships, strip clubs, hardware stores, and Sargent's Cafe. You can't go wrong with the no-nonsense diner food that Sargent's serves up. They have a four page menu chock full of anything and everything you can think of to serve up. From chicken fried steak to NY steak, ceasar salad to tuna salad, Sargent's will fulfill you're every hungover, sore muscle, over ski-ed and under hydrated need. There are also intangibles that make the experience more memorable. The waitress who calls you "honey", the airbrushed plates that hang on the walls for sale, and the case full of painted rocks (trust me, you have to see it).

Ok, upon walking into Sargent's Cafe some might think I'm insane for rating this place with 5 stars. However, despite the funky decor and way old-school truck stop atmosphere, there wasn't a single thing that I could say negative about Sargents in regard to it's food and service. I had a small order of biscuits and sausage gravy with an egg and 2 slices of bacon. Absolutely divine. Can't remember the last time that I had biscuits and gravy that were so dang yummy. My son had the mini pancakes off the kid's menu and it was a TON of food (for under $2). If those were mini pancakes, then I can't even imagine what the full size ones must be like! Even though they were pretty busy, our server, Cindy, was totally on top of it--she brought my sons crayons, took our order quickly, got me coffee immediately and kept the refills coming. Our food came out fast and Cindy was awesome about bringing extra napkins without me even asking and checking on us frequently to see if we needed anything . By far the BEST service I've received in a Bend restaurant so far. I am now a Sargents fan. It really reminds me of the truck stop diners that my truck driver father used to insist on stopping at when we'd take family trips when I was a kid. It's no frills, down-home cookin' with great prices and friendly service. It was only $8 for my son and I to have breakfast at Sargents--probably the best deal in town. This is our new family breakfast spot.

I'm not too hard to please ...... some creamer for my coffee, my food served hot, the omelette I ordered - served in a reasonable amount of time; But when I can't get any of those things I'm gonna have to go with a lot less stars. Definitely not an omelette to write home about, either. I'm sure there are better places to eat at in Bend.

Any breakfast spot that offers to make your omelet into a scramble is alright by me. I prefer the scramble because omelets can sometimes get crispy and brown on the outside which is good for biscuits but nasty for eggs. The corned beef hash has something extra special about it and so do the hash browns. The service was great and my coffee cup was never empty. Pretty decent prices. I could see making Sargent's part of my regular breakfast rotation -- if I lived in Bend.

The staff is nice, the price is right, but the food sucks! Yeah they have corn beef, corn beef in a can. My husband ordered kabasa sausage but it ended up being a weenie. The one you get from Costco. My scrambled eggs were more like dirty eggs. So bad I couldn't even eat them. For a few more bucks I could have eaten at Palmers, Victorian Café, McKay's Cottage or Chows. My husband and I had to go buy a donut from Delish donuts to get the horrible taste out of her mouth and because we were still hungry. The food was so bad that we actually started laughing. The bill was under $20 with tip. You definitely get what you pay for. I had better food in my high school cafeteria than this place. I don't understand the great reviews at all! Mickey D's blows this place away.
