The vegetable curry here is perfection! The portion is huge and you get so much for what you pay for! (around 7.25 I believe) My boyfriend ordered the Sambi ramen and oh my god... Best ramen I have ever tried in my life! This is a place you'd go to if you wanted traditional home style Japanese food. The service was also really great. Being a true Japanese food lover at heart, this place tops many other Japanese restaurants in the area. Though the interior design isn't very "fancy" to some, the food quality and service makes up for it. And in my opinion, the traditional/low art decor really gives the place character.

I love eating here. The food always tastes fresh. The sushi is delicious and the ramen os unbelievably good. It's a little hole in the wall and doesnt look like much but it far surpassed my expectations. I highly recommend eating here( just not on a hot day, as the building is really warm and no air conditioning).

Hidden gem, the Sambi salad is enough to keep me coming back again and again. I also aways gauge sushi restaurants by ordering spicy tuna hand roll and a real crab rainbow roll, both excellent at Sambi.

Japanese food that's affordable and won't break the bank? It must be crap right? I don't think so. Simple rule, when you go into an ethnic restaurant and the place has many of that persuasion eating there, then it's probably good. As soon as we walked in, we saw several Japanese families eating there. Good sign. One of the recent reviews was from a woman from Japan comparing this place to a place back home and how it reminded her of the restaurant she used to go to. That's a pretty big compliment. We went for sushi, fried tofu and for me some ramen. We started off with the sushi. All reasonably priced. I got some striped bass (2 pc. $3.50) and my buddy got California roll and salmon skin roll. The wasabi was killer! I will admit, I hadn't had wasabi that potent in a long time. Really good, cleared the nasal passages up super fast. My buddy and his daughter split a fried tofu dish and I got the Sambi Ramen ($9.25) and it came with three gyoza and rice. The gyoza were nice and crispy and the rice was almost buttery in consistency and creamy in taste. As for the ramen? Good chunks of pork and veggies, nori and hard boiled egg. The broth was different from what I've had before but it was good. Very friendly staff and accommodating. I got out of there spending less that $15 with tip. Unheard of for a sushi place. But it happened and it's worth going back soon. Enjoy.

I love sushi. I've never really gotten into the ramen craze. I LOVE SAMBI. So unassuming, you can drive by it every day and not really notice it there. It's small, it's no-frills, but it's good sushi. This is one of the few places now that has an actual Japanese man making the sushi behind the counter. It feels a lot more authentic than the popular conveyor belt places. This is the place I go when I want quality over quantity. I think the prices are fair for the quality of the sushi, their miso is great, and the service I've had is always very friendly.

My wife and I were really in the mood for sushi and found this place was very close to us and tried it out. The ambience was quite nice, with good music and temperature inside. There was quite a selection to choose from with soba, udon, tempura, ramen, etc... We had been craving sushi though, so we just loaded up on rolls and nigiri. We had the spicy tuna roll, tempura veggie roll, Oregon albacore roll, and soft shelled crab roll. All were really good, especially the soft shelled crab and the Oregon albacore. My wife got a bowl of miso soup which was really good as well and we shared a coke. Was pretty good price for it too. 19 sushi rolls, 2 maguro nigiri, the miso and a soda for only $29. TL;DR nice place, big selection, really good sushi, and not that expensive. Will definitely be going back.

Absolutely delicious! My husband and I are military brats that were stationed in Japan growing up. This place is like a taste of home! We'll be back soon!

I'm here today with my mother to spend time together. Store is clean and inviting with shamisen music playing in the background. No matter when we stop by, we have our friends drop by unexpectedly as it is popular spot for Japanese community. I ordered lunch special that came with 5 pc deep fried shrimp and six cucumber rolls, bowl of rice, pickled cucumber, shiitake, deep fried tofu and poached egg simmer in soy sauce and sugar. I like how it changes a little depending on seasonal item, and I finished half and I became very full. Whenever I'm here I feel like I'm in Japan and feel as though I'm back in my home country. I bring my American friends here where udon, ramen, and buckwheat noodle is popular. Menu has clear description of food and photo's so no matter where your from, you'll enjoy the simple homely atmosphere :)

I'm probably more versed in Japanese food and ramen than 99% of yelp reviewers as I have eaten at hundreds of ramen places in Japan and abroad, as well as having covered most of what's considered top10 places in Tokyo. Sambi ramen that I had here is not Ramen. It's Bullsh!t. It consisted of a bowl of "Ramen" in metal pot, instead of in a ceramic bowl, as if it was some sort of Nabeyaki Udon. It also came with a bowl of rice and 3 pieces of "gyoza", which was a pre-frozen store bought junk. There are some frozen gyozas by companies like Ajinomoto that are halfway edible, but this particular "gyoza" was the deep fried chinese kind that you can buy for rock bottom price in bulk and tasted just as horrid as it appeared. So this "Ramen".... my gosh where should I begin. It consisted of a "broth" that most likely was a diluted dashi concentrate with over cooked dried noodle. This "thing" was beyond bad as any self respecting Japanese person would not dare call it "Ramen". To add to the insult there was this dried, flaovorless "chasu" to make things more miserable. Let's just say that an instant ramen with raw noodle that my 11 year-old made for lunch today tasted 10 times better and it cost me $1.59 at Uwajimaya. My experience with this "ramen" was so bad that it surpassed anger and it made me sad. Sad that the owners have to resort to this crap and charge money. Sad that people on yelp don't see how bad it is. This is a lesson in how to make the most profit with the least amount of effort catering to people who don't know any better. It is true that there is this "ramen boom" in cities like NYC, LA and Las Vegas where many authentic Ramen-ya's are popping up. It is understandable why some Americans don't understand what the big deal with ramen is....because they are subjected to bullsh!t like this; sad indeed. It reminds me of eating "sushi" at 95% of sushi places in the US where Chinese and Korean "sushi chefs" absolutely butcher the sushi culture. I'm saddened by dearth of authentic Japanese food in Portland having moved form Nevada and Cali. Come on Portland, you can do better.

Sambi offers solid Japanese restaurant food; it wasn't anything special, but it was good. I got the agedashi tofu and several temaki. The tofu was spot on and the waitress (probably owner) was very sweet. Based on the food, I would give 3 stars, but because the waitress was so nice I'll give them 4.

This is a sushi restaurant in a strip mall and that is exactly how it felt, smelled and tasted. :(. The restaurant had an overwhelming smell of pine sol and other cleaners. I'm all for a clean restaurant but I don't want to be smelling pine sol when I'm trying to enjoy raw fish. The salmon danburi bowl was way too much bland sushi rice too salmon ratio Especially for the $18 price tag. We ordered the rainbow roll and the spicy tuna roll. Both were ok but not great and left me feeling like it wasn't that fresh. My husband said their Uni was great though. I will not be going here again. Our tab was $65 and it was a definitley not worth it it tasted cheap and not fresh. Maki sushi in Tigard was much better for the price!

I feel bad that this restaurant's service is so bad to a point I had to come here to write a review!!! To start I have to say their food is pretty good , not cheap but good quality, especially like their eel nigiri and caterpillar roll, wudon noodle etc, even their miso soup is much better than any other Japanese restaurant. But, their service is terrible!!! First of all, they are super slow , takes long time to get a simple thing you ask for, two they certain has 0 training on customer orientation , I came in with my two boys today, first they ask me not to let them play the little plastic ball because it fell on ground and they said if someone step in it will fall, two she kept shhhing my son to ask him not to make sound, 3 in the end she came and ask me to keep voice down..... Man, I was super mad!!! 0 respect for family comes with kids!! I am very certain that was my last time there!
(2)Jacob R.
Really great home style Japanese food. Super fresh and tasty. Meichiko (guessing on spelling.) is the server and is really friendly. She will speak with you in Japanese and is very gentle and gracious if your new to the language like I am. I normally get the Sambi Ramen, but sometimes I mix it up with a donburi. Either way you will go home happy and full.

Sambi is my Japanese go-to: all of the authenticity and none of the commercial flash. The first time I ate at Sambi was after I'd come back to Portland from living in Japan, and I could have wept for being so happy to find Japanese food that was clean, simple and pure. Almost every time I visit (which is quite often), there are other Japanese customers as well - a great sign that the place is genuine. The food, menu and environment aren't fancy or elaborate. They're not selling you an exotic setting. Sure, they've got Japanese decorations up and about, but it's a small, family-run Japanese restaurant; there'd be something wrong if they *didn't*. They simply let their meals speak for themselves: good old-fashioned normal, traditional, everyday food. Delicious curry (I would recommend the chicken katsu curry), several types of ramen (unfortunately, none spicy; ramen was the one food item I could actually get spicy in Japan), a variety of donburi (rice bowls), a wide selection of appetizers (their agedashi tofu is a delicious meal on its own!), several wonderful lunch/dinner combo boxes, the usual udon and soba options, and all sorts of sushi that is on the expensive side (which is to be expected for any Japanese sit-down restaurant rather than a kaitenzushi), but decent portions and solid flavour. Their takoyaki makes me feel like I'm in Osaka again, but be careful - it comes out HOT! The speed can be hit or miss (again: family-run). If you go there during a lunch rush, yeah, it will take some time for the food to come out to you. It's never unreasonable, though, and they frequently check on you to refill water or tea. If they are busy, all it takes is eye contact and they come right over. The staff have always been very kind and happy to see me, and they are very genuine in their conversation. I love to come here with new friends and just relax, chatting and eating, never ignored but never bothered and never, ever rushed. Don't come here to impress a new date, but definitely bring your family and friends!

We walked in and were very impressed by the decor. Unfortunately, the food was sub par. The pot stickers were bland. We explained to the waitress (prior to ordering) that my boyfriend could not eat wheat, yet failed to mention that the menu item that he had ordered would be breaded. The entire menu was very vague and difficult to understand for a non Japanese speaking person. The specialty sushi we ordered was also bland. The second waitress (who spoke better English) was very nice and understanding, though the first server still tried to charge us for the gluten-y item that my boyfriend couldn't eat and wanted to make us take it home. The food also seemed much more expensive than it should have been (almost $50 for potstickers, 3 plates of sushi, miso, and one sake). We won't be back.
(2)Johnny B.
Excellent Japanese food. Very authentic and reasonably priced. Service is good. One of our favs!
(4)Savannah P.
The server hustles and the kitchen is quick, but neither compromise in quality or customer service. We ordered the Rainbow Roll and it did not disappoint! They serve complimentary miso soup which is also a bonus. For appetizers, I recommend the calamari... it had crisp breading and was not chewy as is common with most restaurants. Definitely worth a 5 star rating!

Sambi Japanese Restaurant is located in the ancient Valley Plaza Shopping Center. The restaurant itself is actually quite small. About 10-12 tables and a short sushi bar. Sambi is not a particularly comfortable restaurant. Doubt seriously if a professional interior decorator was consulted for Sambi's interior. Service here is shy and not all that friendly. However, despite Sambi's small size the menu is actually quite large. Sambi's offers some of the following menus: sushi, izakaya, lunch, and big plate. The menu also includes combinations, ramen, and bento boxes. The prices are very fair. A Japanese feast for under $10 is very doable at Sambi's. On my visit I sampled Sambi's Ramen. For $9.25 this brought me a delicious bowl of pork ramen, three gyozas, green tea, and a bowl of rice. The ramen broth and noodles were very tasty. However, my gyozas were way overcooked. They were as hard as a rock. My server kept mechanically bringing me cups of tea out of the kitchen even if I hadn't finished my previous cup. Strange! For Japanese food you can do worse than Sambi's but you can also do a lot better. Other than for a quick bowl of Ramen I can't think of a reason to return to Sambi Japanese Restaurant.
(2)Cat C.
The miso soup wAs great. I will be coming back for sure. We also had spicy tuna roll and 002? Soo good! Service was so polite and kind, even though it was pretty busy.
(5)Jennie H.
This place has no omotenashi. The owners have given up entirely and are making money on the worst quality food possible. The ramen was awful, and even calling it ramen is disrespectful. The pork was rubbery (real rubber might actually have been better), the broth was salty water with no complexity or richness and the egg was overcooked and hard. I couldn't make it through even three bites. To top it off, they charged over $9 a bowl. Very sad. If they tried to serve this in Japan they would be out of business in 1 day. Please, if you're considering going here, take a moment and try and find a Japanese restaurant that might actually care about serving you Japanese food (or care about food at all).
(1)Dawn I.
This place is a best kept secret. The food is really good-- the bento boxes are big. I like the house sake and katsu.
(5)David L.
Great, authentic Japanese food at affordable prices. I come here often and order take-out, particularly the Pork Katsu Donburi. The service staff is always very prompt and polite, and the atmosphere is just right. Highly recommended.
(5)Adam C.
A lot of decent food, with nothing that I'd call absolutely stellar. - Gyoza are nice and crispy, though they could use a bit more flavor in the filling. - Various donburi are decent but nothing better than you'd expect for any given $6 donburi - Nigiri is pretty good, especially the salmon which is nice and buttery, though the rice is a bit too much on the sweet side for me; it overpowers the fish - The wheat soba is good, what you'd expect and nothing more; I'd order again. - We had some problems with the mochi ice cream. Ordered a few, some of which were great and some of which were frozen solid, giving the mochi itself a pretty terrible taste. Green tea ice cream was fine. All in all, a decent place and reasonably-priced place that I'd go back to.
(3)Felicia L.
I would give the food 3 stars (good/average) but I bumped the overall to 4 because the service was so quick and nice. Had the Sambi Ramen and it was tasty. It didn't change my life (see: Daikokuya in Los Angeles) but like I said, the service was friendly and very fast. The noodles are good, the meat is okay, the broth could be a little more savory, but those are what would move it from tasty to super good. The ramen comes with 3 gyoza and rice, so for the price, it's a good little deal. I'll like go back when in the need for a quick ramen fix.
(4)Vanessa G.
I went to Sambi to try their ramen. It is not the best ramen I have tasted but for the amount of food you get (rice and potstickers along with ramen for under 10 dollars) it was a good deal . Cute little place that's obviously family owned and lots of Japanese eating here, which is always a good sign . I wouldn't rule out going back for trying something new.
(3)Andy K.
Really fresh fish and awesome service. Extensive menu and great drink choices. I think I saw three different japanese beers available. Best priced table-service sushi on the west side!
(4)John B.
Great Sushi! Friendly & Great Service. Try their specialty rolls - delicious.
(5)Wayne B.
The best sushi.... I start out with the hand rolled creamy scallops MMMM. Next, the yellow tail sahsimi. Eel sushi. Then the Shrimp tempura Donburi. The Service is genuine. We always get a real japanese welcome and a thank you upon leaving. We always sit at the counter while the Sushi master prepares it for you fresh. and the fish tastes real fresh.and artfully prepared. a visual treat. I used to go to the sea, dive down, catch it and eat it on the boat myself! He has everything on the menu. In between orders, he's always keeping his space clean. and getting things organized in neat little containers. The Ladies are clearing your space when you get too many plates There are several places between home and Sambi we miss. It's worth the trip from anywhere.
(5)Mia P.
I absolutely adore Sambi's!!!! There food is so traditional and perfect. Their dinner bento and Takoyaki are my absolute favorites. The waitress who seems to be always working there is so sweet. I have been to a lot of japanese restaurants but Sambi's holds a special place in my heart!
(5)R T.
Not a memorable meal. The food is average at best. California roll was swimming with mayo, tempura a bit caky and over battered. Udon soup nearly tasteless. Lacking atmosphere and diners at lunch.
(2)Kate J.
Not great. Very plain sushi. Smell inside should have been out first clue. Potstickers where not tasty and no real filling inside. Won't be going back.
(1)Toobet L.
My favorite sushi on the Westside. The kind owners prepare great sushi. The atmosphere is simple but has lovely touches of Japan. Definitely worth trip.
(5)Kurt S.
We stumbled across this place hidden away in a strip mall. Had never seen nor heard of it before so decided to pop in. We had some sushi and their miso ramen. Both were delicious. The vibe inside was very comfortable and the service was excellent. We both left full and happy with our new find.
(4)Aaron B.
Very good. My wife's bento box with the ginger pork was delicious. The smoked salmon roll was very fresh and flavorful. My Ramen was excellent. The owners are very polite and accommodating. Great Japanese Ma & Pop stop. Great place for authentic Japanese food.
(5)Ken K.
Not even three hours since landing in Portland from Japan, my mother wanted to go eat lunch at Sambi. First time for me. If you are looking for an authentic traditional setting of a Japanese restaurant, this is it. It's small, that is operated by a husband and wife from Japan. With the time change, and being a zombie from the flight, I thought I was still in Japan, lot of Japanese spoken here. I liked it because they just didn't have sushi, they have a full menu. Pretty close what you would find in Japan if you were walking around looking for a place to eat. Reasonably price and the food was good.
(5)V C.
I find the sushi here delicious; my favorites are the Rainbow roll, the salmon and the yellowtail. We have enjoyed the fried gyoza as well- crispy and tasty. The husband & wife team are welcoming, and I always feel at home. This is not a chic, fashionable restaurant. It is a a great place to have a meal.
(5)Martin M.
Went here for an impromptu lunch. Hamachi sashimi, smoked salmon roll, veg tempura and udon. The fish was a superior cut, the veggies crisp and the service impeccable. Nothing fancy but a warm cozy spot to satisfy your sushi jones.
(4)Kyla T.
I haven't had sushi here yet, but this place deserves a review before that, because their food is so great! I love the chicken katsu curry (don't forget to try it with fukujinzuke,) the takoyaki, the agedashi tofu, and the sukiyaki (my favorite!) So if you like Japanese food but aren't looking for sushi, this little gem is worth going to. The service is nice, just not very speedy, but I like to get an appetizer with a friend here usually anyway and savor the time together.
(4)Mariah B.
My husband and I ate dinner here tonight. It was so-so. When we first walked in I was surprised by how cluttered it was. Dirty dishes were piled high on a table by the front door and on the sushi bar. I had sushi and a salad. The sushi was ok, but had a funky smokey flavor to the seaweed. Neither of us cared for the smokey flavor. It was unlike any we've tasted before. I did like that they were generous with avocado in the rolls. The salad was horrible...literally just iceberg lettuce and cucumber slices. The dressing had no flavor and was very oily. I usually like a light rice vinegar dressing, but there was just no flavor to this at all. My husband had a rice bowl with some sort of egg and onion dish on top. It wasn't visually appealing, but he thought it tasted great, especially for $6. The miso may have been the best I've ever had. Very flavorful. The staff was super friendly.
(3)Andy H.
I've found this to be the best Sushi on the west side of the Portland metro area. I lived in Japan for four years and had a difficult time finding what I thought would be an "authentic" Japanese dining experience, until I discovered Sambi. The "master" can be a little unfriendly and stubborn at times, but that is somewhat typical, in my experience (those of you who've lived in Japan will know what I mean ;)), but seems very professional, in a way that strives to create the best dishes possible. If he doesn't come across as overly friendly, it's because he's in "his zone", like a tea ceremony master or martial arts sensei....anyways, I found the food to be great (especially the tempura), the atmosphere cozy and reminiscent of some of my favorite places in Kanto and Hokkaido, and of course, the sushi fresh and tasty!
(5)Jiliane T.
The food was OK. The salad dressing was essentially oil with ginger in it which left much to be desired. A little bit pricey. Not terrible quality. I probably won't be back
(3)Misa N.
Very mediocre japanese food. Ordered Shrimp Curry tonight, expecting fried shrimp. Instead, it was those tiny shrimp from a can! Yuck! Probably won't go back there again.
(1)Sara D.
This is by far my favorite sushi place in the area. The rolls are not complicated, but always satisfying and fresh - the udon is also quite good. And they have Takoyaki (octopus balls) and I hadn't seen or had these since a visit to Tokyo. Yum! Prices are reasonable, and the atmosphere is homey and non-pretentious.
(5)Kevin C.
Nice enough people, but the service seriously lacking and the food is terrible. The Spicy Tuna roll was nothing more than a tuna roll with rooster sauce (and avocado), and the yakisoba tasted like it was made with BBQ sauce? Everything is made incorrectly and tastes "off".
(1)James O.
Mari T.'s review is spot on - it's a great homey Japanese restaurant that's close by and for what it is (a restaurant in a strip mall), it's quite decent. The food has been just so-so. Nothing as horrible as some of the kaiten-sushi (conveyor belt sushi bars) I've had in the area, but nothing that blew my socks off. I come here every now and then when I don't want to drive far for a Japanese food kick.
(3)Zach K.
An honest mom and pop sushi spot with reasonable prices, fresh food and great service. We have been there dozens of times and have had only great experiences. Keep in mind this is no frills, its kinda like going to your sweet Japanese aunts house for dinner.
(4)Mari T.
When I am feeling like I want a good, homey Japanese meal and I don't want to drive a million miles or spend a lot of money, I come to Sambi. The combo specials are a great deal - most come with miso soup and sushi along with an entree. Being in a strip mall, the ambience is actually OK (I like that they put washi paper over the fluorescent lights) and they use genmai tea instead of plain green tea which makes a huge difference to me. The sushi is basic, but tasty and they will make accommodations if you ask (My husband prefers sesame seeds rather than fish eggs on his California Rolls). The entrees here are good and even the combo/lunch portions are good. Their tempura is good with a light and fresh batter, but sometimes, they leave a little too much on it before putting it in the fryer so the coating is too thick sometimes. I have had almost everything on their menu and have always been satisfied. I love their salmon shioyaki with grated daikon - it reminds me of my mom's cooking. The people here are really nice and while they always seem to be a little stressed out, we always feel welcomed.
(4)Josie V.
This place serves up some great Japanese food. It's not more of a hidden gem since it's not next to Uwajimaya. They have some pretty good donburi there! It's one of those places I wish I could remember because I forget about it when I go out to eat.
(4)Evan R.
Have to agree with Brian, the sushi is just ok. Nothing special but nothing terrible. It is a step up from the sushi-go-rounds and cheap sushi joints. But none of the rolls are terribly outstanding and the fish is ok nothing to really right home about. The other Japanese food is quite good and the lunch specials are a seriously good deal. Service is so so and even sitting at the sushi bar it is hard to get the chefs to really engage. It is close to home but that is about the most positive thing I can say.
(3)Miwako T.
We've been there several times and we love this place!! Food+sushi combination is very cheap and yummy. We also love the veg coroquettes here, and the dessert crapes are great. We ordered green tea + red bean paste + strawberry and came out nicely decorated like a burrito. Only one negative thing was the service the second time we went. Our 4-year-old got a little cranky and restless (but he wasn't screaming or running around or anything) and the waitress delivered us the bill without a word while we were still eating. Well, maybe this wasn't intentional, but, you know, it could've been better.
(4)Robert P.
Have eaten here MANY times. Food is good, "predictable." Sometimes they've put fish into what my son assumed was a vegetarian plate (then he wouldn't touch the food). Pricing seems on par with other Japanese restaurants. Service is good.
(4)C. K.
The lack of reviews tells me this place isn't on folks' sushi radar screen. It should be. While the food on their menu is solid (agedashi tofu and chicken karaage in particular), their sushi is really quite good - nice fish to rice ratio with the rice perfectly seasoned. As you should with any sushi establishment, ask the chef what he recommends in terms of fresh fish of the day. You won't be disappointed. Also, they recently started offering authentic Japanese style crepes, similar to the kind you get in carts in Harajuku. These crepes are made to order and are filled with fresh fruits and bavarian cream or ice cream. Can I get a woot woot?
(4)Brian M.
Another hidden Japanese restaurant. I'd say the sushi is 'ok' and not great. The other food is really good. Overall its a great and convenient Japanese restaurant. I always love getting noodles or tonkatsu donburi.
