I've been reviewing restaurants for a while now, most of them presenting Mexican cuisine since I have travelled extensively in Mexico and have lived in New Mexico the last ten years or so. Raised in Texas, I know my Mexican food and can make a qualified report that the food we had today in Juan Colorado's was absolutely the worst Mexican food I have ever paid for. When we walked into JC's today, we thought OK, here is a clean, bright restaurant with nice appointments, we're in for a good meal. WRONG!!! First off, the prices were extreme - at least 40 to 50% higher than I would have expected. Maybe it is a high-rent district I told myself. Because of the high prices, we limited ourselves to the Appetizer and Salad section of the menu. My wife ordered the chicken quesadilla and I had the large taco salad. When the food arrived, the first thing we noticed was that the quesadilla was floating in what appeared to be grease. We never established if the place was using cheap yellow cheese or it was the chicken taken from a pot of stewed chicken - a possibility since it was of the exploded-chicken variety. The quesadilla was not recognizable as such. My wife declined to eat it so your's truly was sentenced to consuming it. The taco salad was priced as the Deluxe Taco Salad, but came to the table in a medium-sized fried tortilla shell. I've had larger salads in school cafeterias that were better eating than this one. The meat was so finely chopped up that it had absolutely no texture to it whatsoever. The taco seasoning left the tooth-paste like consistency of the meat overly spiced in my book. Totally disappointed in this place. It is a shame that the food was sooooo over priced as the regular entrees deserved to be tested and rated, but I cannot see myself ever going back so it is what it is. Listen, if you want really good Mexican food, I think the lesson here is to be a little adventurous and seek out some of those more questionable places that just might be diamonds in the rough. The best Mexican food always comes out of the roughest looking kitchens.

We've been there twice and each time the food was great. A huge menu...Great servers too!

Came in about 30 min prior to closing. Place just doesnt have the best layout. There was nobody else in the entire place. Thought they were actually closed. The food was middle to above average. The margaritas were decent. The price was good. We had 3 margaritas, two adult dinner options and a kids option. Under $50... Left with a full stomach and a mini-buzz. The chips and salsa are of good quality too.

This place is dirty. We went 2 weeks ago and ordered an Horchata with an extra cup for my son. As I poured the Horchata into son's cup MULTIPLE dead fruit flies were mixed in with the cinnamon. I'm guessing that they have the Horchata in a large open container in the kitchen and the flies got stirred in prior to serving. I wish I would've taken a picture but we were so disgusted that we left immediately and walked across the lot to five guys. Serving food comes with a certain level of responsibility that Juan Colorado does not take seriously. **** read the other single star reviews ****

The food is your typical Mexican American fare. Nothing to write home about but not the worst I have ever had. The only highlight was the fantastic salsa and the colorful murals.

We went here before going to see a movie at the Cinetopia. My wife liked the chicken chimichanga, my son liked the chicken diablo my daughter liked the vegitarian burrito and I enjoyed the shredded beef burrito. While we don't always find places that we can all enjoy and appreciate, it's great when one does. This place has comfortable, clean, well maintained seating, good service and good food. My family recommends it!

The shredded beef was greasy and the texture kind of tough. It was not on par with other Juan Colorado's or other good Mexican restaurants in the area. I was pretty disappointed maybe they were just having an off night cooking but it was bad enough that I'll never go back. You don't really get to have of nights when you charge $10-15 an entrée. Either fix the problem or don't serve the food. But it's on the chef to know the food is not good.

We've now lived in the area for almost a year now, and we visit Juan Colorado regularly. Service is always excellent now, and the food and decor are really nice. You just have to find the dishes that really work for you. I'll admit I've had a few that were not great, but now I've settled on a few favorites: --The tortilla soup, as I said below, is fantastic. Even the small will fill you up as they are very generous with the shredded chicken, avocado, etc. --Love the cheese enchilada and cheese chile relleno. Glad to have a local place that deserves return visits.

Decent mexican food at a convenient location. Good service, they even helped me with my Spanish. Overall, good experience.

Juan Colorado is an absolute "go-to" for Americanized Mexican food. We've been visiting this particular establishment for years. One of my favorite aspects of Juan Colorado, admittedly unusual, is looking forward to what type of salsa you're going to get. By "type", I mean what flavor is going to be most present. On any given particular day, it could be cilantro, it might be black pepper, or it may even be jalapenos. The only thing I know is that it's made fresh, and made often. I like that. I have a few staples that I prefer at JC. First, and foremost, is the Tacos al Carbon. 3 double walled corn tortillas stuffed with grilled carne asada. Served, of course, with the requisite refried beans, rice and pico de gallo. Sometimes they're more (or less) stuffed with meat, sometimes they're charred a bit more, but no matter. I think this plate is delicious. Other favorites of mine include the Tacos al Pastor, the (chicken) Enchiladas Verdes and even the chicken flautas from the appetizer menu. What really makes this location special, though are the owner/operators, Jorge and Imelda. These are two truly wonderful, friendly people that my wife and I have wished nothing but success for. I'd recommend visiting this store just based on their level of service alone.

We were served rotten beef in our fajitas and we returned it. We were still charged extra for it.

This place is good. There aren't a lot of great mexican restaurants in Portland, so it's alright. A pretty authentic menu, not a ton of vegetarian options though. Salsa is good.

I have enjoyed this spot. I usually get the smaller portion meals, like 2 enchiladas with rice & beans. My hubby has gotten some kind of carne asada soft tacos. My only tiny gripe is that this place is kinda pricey. The staff is real nice & I've never been disappointed with my food. I will give major props to this place for being open last winter when we had that ice/snow storm. We live across the street & when we couldn't drive our car anywhere and everyone else was closed, this place was open. Talk about the staff being troopers!!!!

Some of the worst Mexican food I've ever come across. My burrito was soggy and bland. And the salsa wasn't fresh and looked like it came right out of a bottle. I do not recommend.

After I first moved to Beaverton from Fort Worth, Juan Colorado kept coming up in conversation as a recommended place to get good Mexican food. My roommate and I went in one night to give it a shot. I ordered fajitas. It's my go-to food when I'm trying out a new place like this as it's both simple to prepare yet deceptively easy to prepare badly. The service was good. Place was clean. It was a weekday, so it wasn't busy by any stretch of the imagination. The fajitas...? Not so good. I got a plate of shriveled-up dry meat swimming in a puddle of enchilada sauce. Not even good enchilada sauce. I'm sure I've had worse fajitas at some point somewhere, but with that said I haven't returned. Nor do I plan to any time soon. I didn't get the impression that it was any different than they normally served it, otherwise I might have reconsidered. The salsa was VERY cilantro-heavy. Way, way, way too cilantro-heavy. And I like cilantro...

So a friend took me here and I have to say I was pleasantly surprised..... it is in no way even close to authentic...... it is very much the americanized mexican food type. But for being Americanized.... it was pretty good. I got the chicken chimichanga.... the mean was well seasoned, the beans creamy with cheese melted on top, the rice was great and over all I liked it. I ate a little over half and I am stuffed.... like roll me out the door stuffed.

If you are looking for authentic Mexican, you are in the wrong place. You are also in the wrong state. As a Southern Californian native, I'm fully aware of what genuinely good, authentic Mexican food is. However, for what it was, it was perfectly fine. Chips and salsa, check. Decent margaritas, check. The entrees were moderately priced, not cheap, but not expensive either. I think our bill came out to $45 for three entrees, I got chicken enchiladas, and they were fine. Nothing special, but it helped hit the craving for Mexican food that I was having. Service was average, but the waitress herself was sweet. It's a casual location, and if you have a hankering for some Mexican food, go ahead and give it a try. They also have a Happy Hour, although I can no longer remember days and prices.

Initially I was very impressed. The location was casual but nice. Food tasted good but the size was rediciulous. I ordered to arroz con pollo. It was good but the flavor quickly became too much. Personal preference though. The gnats flying around the entire time would generally be regarded by most as annoying. All in all, I would go again, but not often.

Bad food, and bad food. They are a typical Mexican food restaurant but the food is just sub-par. The service is decent and they have a bar, but the food is just terrible. The seasoning is seriously lacking and some parts of the plate are cold, while the rest is piping hot.

I've been here a few times...it's always been okay, but not great. The staff definitely lacks attention to detail. For example, the carne asada plate is supposed to come with two broiled green onions (as specified on the menu), and it did not. The waitress just dropped the plates off and vanished, not returning to ask how our meal was. The pico de gallo is always dull, old, and on the verge of spoiling. Definitely not impressed!

First , I would like to say that I have been here before many times and the food was good, not great, but always came back. Unfortunately the last 3 visits have not been good at all. I took my assistant in for lunch on a Monday , they were not busy we were 1 of 3 tables, that's a sign right there to think before you enter a place to eat. The waitress was less than friendly( experienced that before here as well) now I know people have bad days but really? She took our order, chips, salsa blah blah, drinks for my assistant. That part of the order including taquitoes and maneudo (soup) came quickly like Mexican food does, very quick and it was good. Well we were done eating our appetizers and we waited and waited, meanwhile more people come in, order, get there food and we are still waiting. I get up to find someone and no one is to be found. At this point I want to know where is our waitress and where is the cook and where is our food? So I went to the restroom and when I come out the waitress brought our food and was cleaning the waitress area while on her cell phone. Well back at the table there was our food...GROSS,DISSCUSTING VERY HOT PLATE AND COLD FOOD, THE RICE WHICH I'm ALLERGIC TO AND i ASKED HER FOR NO RICE EXTRA BEANS! Came with rice all over my food. The rice was crusted over, the beans were crusted over and the lettuce was wilted and the guacamole was dark in color until you scraped it off with a fork. My assistants meal some egg wrapped chili thing looked like it came out of the garbage. The meal was GREASY, COLD and so dried up from sitting under the HEAT LAMP for to long. WE could not eat our meals, we tried to but yuck! This is the kicker on this whole thing looked for our waitress again, she ignored us, we tried to get her attention, she ignored us. When she came to pick up our almost untouched meal, she DID NOT ASK US "HOW WAS YOUR MEAL YOU DIDN'T EAT ANY OF IT?" BECAUSE SHE NEW WE WERE NOT PLEASED! So she brings the bill..$52.00 FOR WHAT I ASKED HER?I paid..SHE WALKED AWAY AND SAID THANK YOU AND WAS OUT OF SIGHT FROM THERE! Could not be found until we left and then she came out to our table where we were sitting and looked for a tip! Can you believe that! I stood in the window at my car and shook my head NO to her. She gave me and my assistant a bad look and proceeded to help the next poor soul that walked acrossed her path. Now I know this is a hard review, but, no excuse I had to pay full price for crap and this morning I find myself very sick to my stomach and so does my assistant. Bad food, Bad service. They do not have a comment card so I wrote one on the back of my receipt that hopefully the manager will see. I have brought allot of my clients, partners, buisness meetings, friends and family to this place, THEY KNOW ME when I come in! REALLY PEOPLE, I'm not asking for royal service, just kind polite people to wait on me and whom ever I bring in, we would like good food to come out of the kitchen that is what we pay for. Ive been a waitress for 22 or better years,( not anymore) and this was unacceptable all the way around.

My husband and I have been to this restaurant a few times now and I think it has made it to our permanent list of places to go. The chips and salsa are good, although I will admit the salsa is borderline too spicy for my personal taste. The service has always been fast and friendly and the food is delicious. I have had their garden fresco burrito twice and the shrimp ceasar salad once. Just thinking about it makes my mouth water - I would highly recommend this restaurant to any of my friends.

Juan Colorado was a lot better than I expected when my pregnant belly informed me that I had to pull over and eat--now! And it didn't care where. Particularly notable was the friendly service. Smiles and cheer from everyone working there. And our server was attentive and spot on with her timing. The food was standard, but good. Pirate grrl had a kids' meal with chicken enchilada, beans, and rice. Not only did she stuff in as much as she could of all three, but she raided my plate for more beans. And when her daddy eyed the leftover enchilada tonight, she made it clear she would defend it with her life (even if she did break off the tip of her pirate sword yesterday). I enjoyed the chicken in mole sauce, with tasty corn tortillas and the ubiquitous rice and beans, all of which were well executed and plentiful. The horchata was overly sweet for my tastes, but that didn't stop me from accepting a refill. And the salsa that they brought with the chips tasted fresh and pleasingly hot. The interior is as cheerful as the employees. Bright murals and tiled doors and windows gave my daughter lots to look at while I perused the menu. We aren't in this neighborhood often, but it's nice to know the next time we find ourselves in South Beaverton, there's a good restaurant nearby.

I hate to write this, but I feel it's a public service. We have gone to Juan Colorado here and there over the last few years, it's decent usually, nothing fantastic but pretty good Mexican and big portions...however last night will probably be my last visit there. There are just too many other places around to try to keep going back for sub-par food and service. I ordered the special carne asada with prawns, mushrooms, rice, beans, pico de gallo and tortillas. Was really looking forward to it and food looked amazing when it came out. Took a few bites and WOW was it salty...I mean, over the top salty that makes you cringe. Steak was pretty good but it was covered in this horribly salty butter sauce that was also on the prawns and shrooms. When I put the pico de gallo on it (which is very fresh and good), it cut the saltiness so I was dealing with it. When the waiter came by I did want to let him know about it to tell the cook. He insisted on replacing my steak. I appreciated that, but then I waited 10 minutes for a new steak, my rice/beans got cold and I really wasn't even hungry any more. I should have sent the entire meal back at the beginning. After that, things went downhill...for some reason our waiter went missing..it took FOREVER to get our bill, and then to pay it...even though I asked if he was the cashier and he SAW that I had cash in hand ready to pay...he walked off and was gone another 10 minutes. Just disappointing, all around. Going to find someplace else for Mexican, or better yet, make it myself at home where it's ALWAYS fantastic.

I love this place! It's an americanized Mexican restaurant, but with a few 'authentic' touches that make it special. I absolutely love the carne asada steak dinner. It comes with rice/beans, guac, pico de gallo and corn or flour tortillas. Perfectly cooked and seasoned meat. Most meals also come with a Mexican style 'coleslaw' by request. I love this stuff, and eat it with my meat and in my tacos. It's not like american coleslaw, no mayo. It's more like pickled vegetables, and gives a nice tang to the meal. The salsa is a little hot for me, but it has good flavor. Sometimes it's hotter than other times, so it's not always the same. My husband get the tacos al carbon which he LOVES. Oh and by the way the service is really good! Every person you come in contact with is polite and friendly.

We always go here when we don't have the energy to make our own dinner. We love Mexican food and this place does the trick. When we ask for spicy salsa, that's exactly what we get. I love the enchiladas verdes and my husband recently got the mole enchiladas and they were really good too!

Had a pretty mixed experience at this location. Some days its great, others not so much. I would normally give this place 3 stars, but during my most recent visit I discovered that my favorite server from the Hillsboro location is now here. And he is still a great server. So a bonus star for that. The food may not be the most authentic, but everything is tasty. And its relatively consistent amongst the other branches. The salsa is really good. Just enough spice to get your mouth burning. And they have excellent margarita's. So give it a shot. It's pretty tasty!

Love this place! I've been here quite a few times; it being very near my work. I LOVE their Chicken Tortilla soup! mmm and the Enchiladas are excellent. They give you water, chips, and salsa upon sitting down. I've always recieved excellent and prompt service. The prompt is pretty important because I'm usually on my lunch break. I will be back again and again!

Stopped in and had the Chicken Enchilada Verde. Food was acceptable, service was very prompt and the place was filling up. This is a good place to stop in for a quick meal and satisfy that craving for Mexican Food if in the neighbor hood.

Had such a wonderful experience at this place! My wife wanted to have a cheat meal a few weeks back and requested Mexican. There are a lot of places to choose but I am really glad we choose this one. It is becoming one of my local favorites. To start off I love the interior, colorful with paintings, makes for a warm and fun environment. The food portions were huge and the prices were fair. It tasted great too! I had a burrito and she had some nachos. Making enjoyment noises the whole time she scarfed it down, such a fun night!

Everything but the service was less than average. The customer service was good and attentive, the only reason for the second star. Definitely not authentic tasting. Everything could have used more flavor. Basically your typical Mexican chain restraint

Mexican Cuisine

If you enjoy Taco Tuesday, then you have officially fallen in love with the Mexican Food. The main grain of Mexican cuisine is maize. Also known as corn, maize is grown for the past 9000 years after the crop was discovered by the people in Mayan civilization. Mexican empire flourished when they started growing beans, tomatoes, chili pepper, sweet potato and cactus. Till this date these ingredients are used in cooking authentic Mexican dishes and drinks.

Great use of spices, fresh chili pepper dishes like fajitas, tortilla chips, corn chips, salsa, chimichangas, burritos, nachos and quesadillas are invented in America. But when you are looking for authentic Mexican food then you must find a restaurant in the city that serves Rajas con Queso, Garbanzo in a Guajillo Chile Sauce, Pork Filled Chiles Rellenos, Chiles en Nogada, Molcajete Salsa, Pico de Gallo and Frijoles de la Olla. An eye-opening fact – Mexican don't like their food hot. They use fresh chili and other spices to create a flavor that lingers in your mouth.

Mexican food is great for those who are Gluten Intolerant as they use Corn instead of wheat in most of their dishes. Also, you can easily find many beans based Mexican dishes. Another dish which didn't get similar glory as tacos or nachos is the Mexican hot chocolate. If you love something hot on a chilly day, then go for Mexican Hot Chocolate. On merry days, you can enjoy the authentic Mexican Drinks like Tequila, Mezcal, Tecuí, Sotol, Bacanora, Charanda, Posh O Pox, Puebla and Pulque. Mexican Cuisine is for people who enjoy strong drinks and hearty meals.
