When "I'm hungry" turns into "Pull over! Food!" I had to consult Yelp and make a detour to Rio Cafe. Our lady server was incredibly friendly and accommodating. The dish I ordered wasn't available and, after learning I was vegan, she got excited about creating a vegan tostada dish for me. The blended strawberry daiquiris are delicious and free of that whipped cream nonsense. I was impressed with the level of service and quality of food. I will definitely return to the Rio Cafe.

Friendly staff, good drinks, homemade guacamole, humongous portion nachos on chips that look homemade and fresh. Food was hot and made to order, a little lacking in spice. If you like spicy be sure to ask for condiments because it's pretty bland otherwise. Salsa could use some work but other than that, nice place for lunch.

This is my spot. I'm originally from the Astoria area, and anytime I get home I cannot leave without getting some steak nachos from here. They last me at least three meals and are definitely on my 'last meal' menu. But, the nachos aren't the only thing this place has going for it. Any of the burritos are great, especially the one with shrimp in it. If you find yourself in Astoria, do yourself a favor and stop by the Rio!

Every time I go, I am always very pleased with what I get. Chipotle burritos, pork enchiladas, pork tamales, nachos. Everything I have ever had at the Rio has been great. I also love the tea-lemonade mix that Julie makes.

My husband and I found this place on yelp - and were SOOO happy we did. It's off the main drag through town so I never noticed it before. Food was wonderful; Mr had the green pork burrito and I had the chipotle pork dinner. Both were full of flavor and my dinner had enough heat to make my nose run, but not enough to ruin the flavor of the meat. The strawberry margarita was even better! I typically think of strawberry margaritas as a headache in a glass; all sugar, limited alcohol. Not here - it was hands down the best straw. marg. I've ever had. We got to talking with the owner and her daughter (our waitress) as we were paying the bill. These are some great people - we were total strangers and they made us feel so welcome. Julie, the owner, took us to see the new bar her husband built next door to the restaurant and offered us a taste of the apple-pear-cinnamon moonshine he brewed - I'd go back to this place just to sip on a glass of this at their great bar. A-ma-zing hootch. In a small town with limited great dining places, this establishment is a shining star that we can't recommend enough. We'll definitely be back next time we're in Astoria!!

This place is great. I usually go to the bar side. The owners are awesome people, make you feel really welcome. The food is great and prices are reasonable. If you are in Astoria, it is a place you should hit up.

I have been dining at the Rio for over 10 years. The Rio has slowly been declining in quality and value since Julie bought the business. Very overpriced. Chips and salsa come as a side dish, that is a first for me. And if you want more chips it's an extra charge. My entree came with only 2 corn tortillas and when I asked for more I was charged extra. The portion size is on the smaller side. I felt very nickel and dimed! The taste of the food was just average. If you want Mexican food there are many better options to choose from that are MUCH more authentic and a better value. If you like overpriced ok food and plastic table cloths, then the Rio cafe is your place.

Friendly service. Very good selection for vegetarians. Huevos Rancheros were very good (nice red sauce, whole beans instead of refried) and we also liked the Burrito Fresco (fresh vegetables, black and pinto beans, cheese and salas fresca rolled in a flour tortilla. topped with lettuce, cabbage and tomatoes). Both were under $10 for lunch.

Okay. I am seriously not sure if these other reviewers ate the same food I did. We were visiting from out town and I read up on places to eat on Yelp. This place seemed to have great reviews. We drove past another Mexican place that very crowded and I told my boyfriend I read about this other place on Yelp, let's check it out. First mistake, pass up the place crowded with locals and go the place that was dead with no else in it. The guy who served us was super nice, the decor was shabby but actually reminded me of Mexican Cantinas. Plastic chairs and all. My margarita was awesome and my boyfriend was served a crazy large beer. The problem happened when our food arrived. Probably the worst Mexican food I have ever had. I had the shrimp with garlic butter, it was just horrible and soupy and had no flavor. It came with homemade tortillas which were stale. My boyfriend equally disliked his food. We eat a lot of meh food in Portland. Not memorable at all. This was something else, impressively bad. We both felt sick the rest the evening. Not to mention, even though the decor was cheap the food was not. Sorry I wanted to like the place, everyone was really nice. Maybe they had a new cook or something? But my experience food wise was beyond underwhelmed.

Rio Cafe - Probably the best experience I've had at a Mexican restaurant in many many many years. The staff was so friendly and pretty much everything is made in-house and fresh - the chips, salsa, beans, salad dressing etc. Fantastic. Plus they had great vegetarian options. The margaritas were great and the food was incredible - no grease and I didn't feel awful afterward! We even got the banana ice cream dessert because it sounded so good and it ended up being soooo dreamy - bananas cooked in rum and then served with french vanilla ice cream and caramel, then topped with real whipped cream. Whoa. This place blew my mind. I was really surprised I hadn't heard of this place before and even more surprised at how great our experience was. We go to Astoria quite often and plan on adding this to our "Go to" list when we visit.

I really want to reward The Rio with more stars, I really do. The owner is so sweet and friendly, and our experiences with her have been nothing short of great. Fresh, flavourful food that transcends the typical Americanized Mexican Menus. How cool that the Rio is owned by Irish folks (including the building) !! Being from Ireland myself makes this an added bonus. My only complaint at this stage of the game (after about 5 visits) was that the prices are just a tad bit high. Other than that, no complaints. Now let's examine our last 2 visits. Keep in mind that we are locals, and locals are the ones that keep you alive in the off season, as well as bring in folks / recommend you during the tourist rush. On those cold, rainy Wednesday nights when you can hear the ghosts of customer's past...it is people like myself that come in and keep you in the black. Ironically, our last 2 visits were on nights just as I describe. The difference was that we didn't feel valued as customers. Julie (the owner) wasn't working, it was another lass who may be a sister ? / relative? Hard to say, as she could pass for being related to Julie in the looks department. I sadly, failed to get her name, but it is not really that important at this stage of the game. She was rather uninspired and just bland as a server. We engage all of our servers, and tend to be very outgoing and friendly, so when we get a ho-hum reception, it usually isn't us. Even when she talked about her big dogs, she was rather solemn. My biggest point of contention though was being told that she "would have to charge us for more chips", when we requested a refill. More chips were never an issue with Julie (nor at any other Mexican place I have dined at, and I have been to quite a few over my life in many areas of the world). One would think when we are your only customers on a slow night, that bringing more chips would not be an issue. Her defense to my questioning was that "well they are the good kind" (meaning made in-house). Ummm, so if they were the crappy from a bag kind that can actually cost more, it would be OK to comp them to me? Come on!!! The first slow night this happened, I thought maybe it was just an off night for her, but when it happened the following week, along with her blase' attitude, I think it is more of a trait. Sad, as we really like the Rio's food, but don't like to be made to feel like we are to be indebted to them for their service and chips. It is the other way around folks. I am pretty sure that the profit that is made from what is charged for the food can easily absorb paying for fresh corn tortillas and some oil to made "the good kind" of chips. Next, will there be a surcharge for the use of the chair and table as well? A sad insult of our intelligence and patronage.

CARNITAS are unbelievable! The chips are made in-house. I absolutely love the Sonora Burrito. Julie and Josh run the best restaurant and cantina on the coast, it's worth the trip.

The Rio Cafe has been a long time favorite of mine for many years. Their dishes are home cooked and fresh. Former waitress and now owner Julie is personable, warm and welcoming. She always knows my name and exactly what my favorite dishes are. She is amazing and somehow remembers what I like even if I haven't come in for months at a time. My favorite dish is the "Burrito Sonora" which is basically just a chicken burrito, but oh so wonderfully made in the Rio way. I would recommend starting out with their homemade tortilla chips and salsa. My friend Karmen loves their jalapeno cream salad dressing. I would also recommend trying their special soups as they are often very good.

Let me start this review with a couple pertinent questions: "Would I go back?" ....yes! "Would I recommend this place to a friend?" ...yes! Service was friendly Food was good - made with care - very tasty. Margarita was most excellent. I always get a "Cadillac" - rocks & salt. It had plenty of alcohol and wasn't thrown together with some cheap pre mix. Big No-No...charging for chips and salsa. That's just slapping tradition in the face. (They were good chips - but nothing special. Hint - warm the chips). They do give you a choice of small ($1:50) or large ($3:00). Another hint - if you're insistent about charging for chips - you better have some of the best salsa - Rio Cafe's had that "from a bottle" taste & consistency. The Rio is decorated with bright colors - it was festive and welcoming - something I always enjoy. Service was very friendly. Enjoy!

I went into this place expecting something fresher, authenticer, something elser. BUT, I still left happy because he server was spectacular. The first thing she did was offer us "drinks? a glass of wine anyone?" And what a glass of wine it was. Both perfectly delightful and ENORMOUS. I'm talking so big I felt the need to text someone a photo of it. We also decided to split the enchilada entree, which not only elicited no snooty looks, but was brought out separated onto two delightful little plates with our own portions of beans and rice. This place had kinda weird hours, as in, I had to walk there three days in a row before it was actually open, but those days were Sunday and Monday, so I'm guessing you're safe the rest of the week.

The nicest owners & staff; great meals and go for the ice cream & banana dessert. I have been eating here for 12 + years and have never had a poor meal. I like to go in and sit down and ask Julie to "surprise me" and I am always delighted.

The food, the service and the drinks all wonderful! The service and the owners are AWESOME!!!! A++ They have live music in the Cantina! We will be back every time we visit Astoria!

Went to lunch here with my parents and had a fantastic experience! The food was so flavorful and fresh. Dad had the carne asada tacos and my mom and I split the nachos and cheese enchiladas. We also ordered a side of guac. By the end of the meal all the plates were all but licked clean! As mentioned in the previous reviews, Julie (the owner) was very nice and attentive. As a vegetarian, there were nice options for me and greatly appreciated that they put on the menu that there was chicken stock in the rice. The next time we go back to Astoria, this will be a "must visit" spot.

Julie, the owner, is consistently friendly, chatty and nice. The margaritas are consistently powerful. The decor is consistently shabby kitsch. What's not consistent is the food. Though I've been to the Rio at least a half-dozen times and have had several great experiences, the last couple of visits have been sub-par. I used to adore the fish tacos: several small corn tortillas with delicate shredded fish and cabbage and fresh lime. Now they consist of big wet slabs of mediocre fish and a really spicy sauce. The puerco verde (pork in green salsa) used to be delish, but now it's just kind of soupy and bland. I recently ordered the carnitas and was horrified by what was presented to me: small chunks of pork that had been deep-fried to a crisp. Some of the chunks had the consistency charcoal... dry, hard and charred. I can't remember the last time I sent food back to the kitchen but I unwaveringly sent this back. Julie was happy to bring me something else from the menu, acknowledging that carnitas are "an acquired taste". Uh... I've had carnitas a zillion times, and have never had carnitas like this. (I replaced it with a simple chicken quesadilla which was just that: simple. And unremarkable.) There are signs all over the Rio touting their "new menu" -- I don't know whether they've got a new cook or what, but I personally long for their old menu.

My favorite Mexican restaurant on the coast. I eat the daily special on a regular basis, it's always been great. Excellent house dressing and variety hot sauces.

Bland food. Slow and unfriendly service. A shrug of the shoulders when we mentioned that the food had little if any taste...just told us to add some sauce (Tabasco) to it. Would not return or recommend.

Great food, friendly service. Cute little place off the beaten path so to speak. Right near the bus station off Marine Dr. (9th st.)

  • Bobby D.

The decor is worn and rough, but the food is good. I went here for lunch and ordered the stewed pork with rice and beans. It also came with homemade corn tortillas. Three quarters of the plate was rice and beans and it only had about 5 small cube size pieces of pork on top. I didn't see the value in the meal I ordered for $9.95. If I go back I would try something different.

We made a point to eat here on our way out of long beach, wa. Both food and service were excellent. I had the pork tamales on special. My family had tostadas which we're very big.

  • Dan M.

Fresh, fresh, fresh. What a refreshing departure from conventional tex-mex and greasy (American) mexican fare. The chips are home-made on site and cost extra, but they're worth it. The greens on the tostadas taste like they have been just picked from the garden. What a delight to find authentic mexican food on the North Coast. It's amazing when you taste real Mexican food, you wonder how you ate the other stuff for so long. Good service and the atmosphere is decent.

Okay, we were in Seaside on Saturday...WTF! I forgot it was spring break. It was gridlock in that little town. We had a flight to catch so we decided to head towards PDX and eat on the way. I yelped astoria and since my sis in law was craving Mexican, we decided to try Rio Cafe. Nice local owned business with great food. The guacamole is hand hacked daily. My wife and I split a fish taco plate. Julie (owner and lovely lady to talk to) Split the orders for us. My sis and bro in law had the same. We took pictures in the giant sombreros just like in tijuana. When the chips and guac arrived it came with four different dipping salsas. Julie warned the habanero salsa was hot....NOT, I'm from SoCal so I like my mex spicey. Thats okay Julie, it was delish none the less. Since we split our lunch, we decided we would splurge and have a taste of flan. A very good decision. The flan was one of the best I've eaten. Because this restuarant is a little out of the way, it is a great place to escape the weekend rush. I gave it 4 stars because I just don't give 5's. I'm still looking for a number 5. It keeps me on a mission

The Rio Cafe is not your traditional greasy Mexican restaurant. The chips are homemade daily; and you get a small plate of chips and salsa with your dinner not an endless amount. The menu is small, but everything on it is good. I should know ... I think I've had it all. Make sure you ask your server if they have any Carnitas - they are not on the menu, it's like a locals secret - and they are wonderful if you like fried pieces of pork. They only usually have a few orders per night and it's a big disappointment to my husband if they don't have any when we go. The fresh strawberry margaritas are wonderful ,as well as the fresh mango, or papaya. The fried banana dessert it also worth trying, if you have any room after a margarita, chips, and dinner. If you're looking for greasy, lard laden re-fried beans and endless chips and salsa this might not be the place for you. But if you're looking for some great food, full of flavor and made with lots of love, then the Rio is the place for you!

They have very good vegetarian options!! Their salsa(s) were all delicious. The only reason I gave them a 4 star is because their rice is cooked in chicken broth- so if you're a vegetarian who chooses not to eat anything non vegetarian, they'll substitute rice for beans = more beans!! Not that I'm complaining, our lunch just comprised of too many beans. Customer service is good and so is the ambience.

They changed their hours :( No hours listed on yelp but I checked their website and it said they are closed Sunday's and open Monday 11-3. They have a sign on the door for summer hours which states 11-9 Tuesday - Saturday with the Catina opening at 4pm. Closed Sunday's and Monday's. We stayed in town last night (at a crappy hotel) instead of continuing on because we ate at this restaurant a few years ago and LOVED it. We wanted to try it again as we are in the area but can't. Very disappointed that they can't keep their information updated. The reason for leaving a bad review? I am hoping they see it and update their information. (I am willing to change my review once the information is updated and I get to try their food again.)

Found this place through Yelp and went on a Saturday afternoon for lunch. We ordered the chips and salsa as its not complimentary. The chips and salsa tasted very fresh. For entrees, we got the chicken enchiladas and the Mexican scrambled eggs from the Breakfast menu. We got the Pinto beans and would have preferred the black beans but they never asked for an option. The rice was just ok. Food was pretty bland here and we liked the fact that it was not too cheesy. But there could be a little more spice and flavor to the food.

It's gross an expensive for what it is. I don't think they use spices in their kitchen. I had the carne asade. It was tough bits of steak in a probably canned tomato sauce that was incredibly salty. The tortillas that came on the side were old and brittle. "Authenticity" is a joke. It serves its purpose for white people who don't like spicy food but everything was pretty dismal.

Just had the best tuna taco's ever at the Rio!!! My husband and I enjoy going to the Rio but today they had a special fresh tuna taco's!!! With spicy sour cream and Josh's special mango habanero sauce made just for these taco's it is so yummy we will come back tomorrow for dinner!!! They said they'd have more tomorrow! Better hurry cuz the tuna for today is almost gone but the good news in they will have fresh tomorrow

Julie is one of the main reasons I keep coming back and have been a Patron at the Rio since it first opened. My family and I used to spend time with my Uncle while he was still with us and he loved to find a good Mexican spot and one night we happened to come upon the Rio! Each time any of us visit, Julie knows us by name, is always so welcoming, and makes sure that our meal is just as good as the very first time we ate there. A true gem in Astoria and on the Oregon North Coast!

Ugh. Plastic patio furniture INDOORS, blaring Pearl Jam & Creed while you eat, and a rude Ducks fan bartender. That about sums this place up. Food is ok. You'd get a better meal across the street at Plaza Jalisco with pleasant service, and for less. The bartender (owner?) can be rude. Went there with some girlfriends, and he came over to take our drink order before we had menus. We asked him for some menus, he seemed all put out about it and slammed some on the table. The whole time we were eating, the WORST 90s alterna-rock (think Peal Jam's "Jeremy" Pandora station) was so loud and annoying. Very aggro-white male circa 1998 vibe. He tried to make nice with some jokes, but whatever. The food wasn't that great and was pretty expensive. Tostadas were about $13 and pretty small. You can do better Astoria!

The first stop on "Sue and Dan's 1 year anniversary of not being married but being in a relationship" tour to Astoria took us to the Rio Cafe a place that Sue had eaten at many many moons (and suns) ago. We walked in early on a sunny Saturday afternoon and were the first ones to do so. Within 15 minutes a few other people came in for lunch as well. We are leaders, not followers. We were presented with menus and took a seat at the table up front as the sun was shining and we wanted to be as close to that as possible. Sure we could have sat outside, but there were no umbrellas on the tables and sitting in the sun for a prolonged period of time isn't something I like to do very often. Started out with a large portion of the homemade chips and salsa ($3 for a very large serving). The chips were really good. Love chips and when they are homemade, even better. The salsa was really good and super fresh too. For my main I went with the special that they had. Shrimp Fajitas ($11.95). I figured it might be nice to have some seafood since I was at the coast. The portion size again was very generous. The colors were really great too. Red, orange and green peppers along with the shrimp and onions as well as the re-fried beans and rice. See my picture and know that it wasn't altered in any way. The food was all very good, but I think Sue and I agreed that it needed a bit more in the way of spices. I don't cook with much salt myself and it is obviously easier to add it than take it out, but this seemed to have none whatsoever. I'm not exactly sure what happened there, but maybe that is just the way they roll here at the Rio Cafe. I quite enjoyed the meal otherwise. It seems like the Rio has been around for over 5 years and that is saying something. Good Mexican in Astoria. Check it out.

Overpriced, the rice and beans were very small portions, they were also dry. I got 4 shrimp in my $18 shrimp platter and it really just didn't impress at all. I'd skip the restaurant and just go to the bar half of Rio next door, "taco Tuesdays" and margaritas will help you forget how much money you just spent on that dissapointing meal.

The Qeuso Fresco was awesome, like a Mexican fondue with homemade chips. Salsa was flavorful without being hot (we opted for the mild version). We shared a chicken and both left full and satisfied. Not to mention the great margaritas.

My boyfriend introduced me to the Rio when we first started dating three years ago and it has turned into one of my favorite restaurants. Julie is super nice and sweet and the food is beyond amazing. I love the shrimp quesadilla and the Queso Fresca is what I look forward to eating every time we visit. I have also had a couple of their enchiladas and they are very good as well(sometimes I have a hard time deciding between getting an enchilada or a quesadilla). The Cantina next door is also a fun place to be to watch a game and get a drink. I highly recommend it if you are anywhere near Astoria.

(9th st.)

Incredibly friendly staff, clean atmosphere, and food smells incredible as soon as you walk through the door. I'll definitely be back again! Thanks! ^^

Mexican Cuisine

If you enjoy Taco Tuesday, then you have officially fallen in love with the Mexican Food. The main grain of Mexican cuisine is maize. Also known as corn, maize is grown for the past 9000 years after the crop was discovered by the people in Mayan civilization. Mexican empire flourished when they started growing beans, tomatoes, chili pepper, sweet potato and cactus. Till this date these ingredients are used in cooking authentic Mexican dishes and drinks.

Great use of spices, fresh chili pepper dishes like fajitas, tortilla chips, corn chips, salsa, chimichangas, burritos, nachos and quesadillas are invented in America. But when you are looking for authentic Mexican food then you must find a restaurant in the city that serves Rajas con Queso, Garbanzo in a Guajillo Chile Sauce, Pork Filled Chiles Rellenos, Chiles en Nogada, Molcajete Salsa, Pico de Gallo and Frijoles de la Olla. An eye-opening fact – Mexican don't like their food hot. They use fresh chili and other spices to create a flavor that lingers in your mouth.

Mexican food is great for those who are Gluten Intolerant as they use Corn instead of wheat in most of their dishes. Also, you can easily find many beans based Mexican dishes. Another dish which didn't get similar glory as tacos or nachos is the Mexican hot chocolate. If you love something hot on a chilly day, then go for Mexican Hot Chocolate. On merry days, you can enjoy the authentic Mexican Drinks like Tequila, Mezcal, Tecuí, Sotol, Bacanora, Charanda, Posh O Pox, Puebla and Pulque. Mexican Cuisine is for people who enjoy strong drinks and hearty meals.
