Mexican Cuisine
If you enjoy Taco Tuesday, then you have officially fallen in love with the Mexican Food. The main grain of Mexican cuisine is maize. Also known as corn, maize is grown for the past 9000 years after the crop was discovered by the people in Mayan civilization. Mexican empire flourished when they started growing beans, tomatoes, chili pepper, sweet potato and cactus. Till this date these ingredients are used in cooking authentic Mexican dishes and drinks.
Great use of spices, fresh chili pepper dishes like fajitas, tortilla chips, corn chips, salsa, chimichangas, burritos, nachos and quesadillas are invented in America. But when you are looking for authentic Mexican food then you must find a restaurant in the city that serves Rajas con Queso, Garbanzo in a Guajillo Chile Sauce, Pork Filled Chiles Rellenos, Chiles en Nogada, Molcajete Salsa, Pico de Gallo and Frijoles de la Olla. An eye-opening fact – Mexican don't like their food hot. They use fresh chili and other spices to create a flavor that lingers in your mouth.
Mexican food is great for those who are Gluten Intolerant as they use Corn instead of wheat in most of their dishes. Also, you can easily find many beans based Mexican dishes. Another dish which didn't get similar glory as tacos or nachos is the Mexican hot chocolate. If you love something hot on a chilly day, then go for Mexican Hot Chocolate. On merry days, you can enjoy the authentic Mexican Drinks like Tequila, Mezcal, Tecuí, Sotol, Bacanora, Charanda, Posh O Pox, Puebla and Pulque. Mexican Cuisine is for people who enjoy strong drinks and hearty meals.

I can deal with a slow service issue (that other posters noted) for this food. I am so tired of going into a place and getting crappy food. This is one of the best Mexican restaurants I have been to in a long time. I eat a lot of Mexican food, I am from So. California, this is good Mexican food trust me. A bit refreshing from the normal Pacific Northwest Mexican food.

We came in 5 minutes before they were closing and they were gracious enough to let us come in. The service was fast and friendly, the food authentic and tasty. I don't get why there are negative reviews...grumpy people or just a bad day, maybe? Either way, we enjoyed it and we are pretty discerning diners.
(5)Kevin C.
The food is pricey but good. They give you nacho with delicious sauce as an appetizer. Try this place out for some good food.

I would not eat here again. We arrived, we were the only people in the place, after being seated and given menus and chips/salsa/ beans, the waiter vanished. I had to walk into their kitchen, then through to the bar to find the guy and get him to take our order. I am sure there are better places...check out urban spoon..I wish I had...but they did not poison me, so it's was not all bad.

Well, hell.... we gave this place another few tries and have been let down to the point of no return. Food quality and flavour was on a slow but steady decline. Food was dry and seemed like it had been sitting out too long prior to being served. Service was always inattentive with you as the customer having to ask for water / drink / chip/ salsa refills even after they glanced at the table seeing empty glasses. Orders were not being filled properly as well. Just very uninspired. Troubling when you see the owner (manager??) sitting off to the side with is feet up on the phone and the staff are just going through the motions. What message does that give? Sorry, we are troubling you and keeping you open. I predict that at this rate, this location of Plaza Jalisco will soon be yet another failed restaurant in Astoria. I need to buy stock in "FOR LEASE" signs, as this sad, steady decline in customer service and local business owner apathy here on the coast is spreading rapidly. So ironic that Astoria keeps flogging the dying horse wondering why their downtown isn't vital..... look around you folks..... lazy staff, piss poor customer service, rising prices, declining product quality, inept management, lack of advertising, quirky hours of operation, banking on the tourist trade while ignoring local support, etc. It doesn't take an MIT grad to figure this out folks!! The horses that adorn Plaza Jalisco need to be put out to pasture.... It is insulting to the consumer that they have hung their "Celebrating 10 Years in Business" banner on the roof-line just recently. Granted it is a free advertising gig for Pepsi that I am sure the restaurant didn't pay a dime for, but it smacks of a quasi-false advertising in my book. Unsuspecting diners and Non-Yelpers will see that and deduce that a place that has stayed in business for 10 years must be doing something right.... how wrong they would be.....(sigh)

I don't know what happened here. It's as though they don't have a full time chef working there anymore. The food doesn't taste freshly prepared. I ordered a combination with a beef burrito and a tamale. The burrito consisted of a soggy flour tortilla stuffed with an oil soaked ground beef in a sauce and that wasn't seasoned. The waiter told me that there are many kinds of burrito's and this one had no re-fried beans, or salsa, or sour cream. Unbelievable! The tamale was a dense, poorly made affair with a lump of shredded beef in the middle. The rice wasn't seasoned properly and the re-fried beans were just thrown on the plate. The whole of the top of the dish was covered in cheese and it was clear the dish had been microwaved briefly to melt the cheese. I explained all this to the waiter who offered go take it all back and make a new plate. I got the impression he was the one who made that mess and just didn't know what he was doing. He returned with another plate. It was clear he was trying to be helpful but it wasn't much better than the first attempt. I have been eating here for years and I'm very familiar with how they used to prepare food. What a shame.

The staff is great. Very friendly. Always helpful. They are always great to our kids. The food is amazing to say the least. The prices are very affordable. We are frequent visitors. This is one of my top picks for Astoria

A great find in a quaint little town! Our last port of call on our wonderful Alaska cruise, we were craving authentic Mexican food--and how lucky we were to find it here! It was a Sunday, so margaritas were $4 and lunch specials were available! Food was excellent, portions were generous and service was warm and attentive. Two thumbs up!

STOP TOUCHING ME! This was my place in high school. I loved every bit of it. Back then my waiter would sometimes touch my shoulder. Witch was cool because I came in so often and he's a friendly guy. . . And then I turned 18 and the shoulder touch was joined by a back pet. Um ok I guess... 21 hit and now I can only go in with a human shield. Aka my mom or bf. I'm not the only one this happens to. I've heard a number of girls complain about it. I think it's crossed the line from being a friendly Astoria character, to creepy. Seriously cut it out.

I've been here a few times, this time the service was terrible. Though happy they have added a couple of vegan items to the menu. It took at least 10 minutes for someone to come to our table to take our order (and no they were not crowded). The veggie enchiladas were actually pretty good with fresh cut veggies (grilled), guac, and rice and whole pinto beans on the side. Had to ask for our side of guac a couple of a time and actually ask for more chips once it came. So worth going for regular Mexican food that is fast but like I said service was meh. Bathrooms were clean.
(2)David G.
Awesome service and food everytime. Awesome staff and the consistency of the awesome food never changes.

I usually love Plaza Jalisco Restaurants. However, this one seems to be lacking in every category. I'm not sure why it differs so much from the Kelso, WA location, they get five stars on EVERY category, you get two.. Waiter was MIA several times, I had informed him that we had just ran ten miles hoping that he would leave us a water pitcher, umm.. NO! He filled our water once. He also got both of our orders completely wrong!! Not a single dish came out the way we ordered them. I didn't complain, just ate what I ordered, I'm not that picky.. but the food we did get was bland and tasted of NOTHING.. The beans that we get before the meal in Kelso are much better! They aren't just re-heated beans from a can. They are slow cooked with jalopenos and beef, um.. YUM! So alas, I wont be returning.

I've only been to Astoria a few times, and it's always been hit or miss when it comes to dining in Astoria. Everytime I've been, I always choose a different restaurant, because I didn't have a favorite. Well, I've found a favorite...and it's Plaza Jalisco Mexcian Restaurant! The best seafood enchiladas I've ever had, ever! I'm going to have to plan another trip to Astoria, just to go back and have a taste of heaven!

Went here for a business lunch while I was in Astoria...Had the special of the day: Fish 'N Chips and it was fresh-fresh Cod...Mexican food was pretty damm good...
(3)Will W.
Food was good, nothing fancy but was quick, fresh and hot. The service was outstanding though!
(4)Tryan H.
Great place. Staff is very friendly and attentive. Food is always fast, top notch and piping hot when it comes out. We've ordered most of the items on the menu, but lately we get 1 Trio fajita and split it, as it's perfect for 2 people. Sounds odd, but the carrots in the fajitas are amazing. Add a couple of $4 margaritas and you've got a great deal. Decor is a little over the top, but not enough to knock it to 4 stars.

I went here for lunch with a coworker and her spouse. After a 10 minute wait, our unfriendly waiter took our order..sorry to bother you but your job is to take our order am I right? I ordered beef enchilada and beef tamale. Our waiter left before asking if we wanted something to drink. Uh thanks I'll just drink water thank you. I started with the tamale, I love a good tamale..ok where's the beef? ( I just had to say it) it was basically masa with a thin ( pencil lead) piece of beef. Dry. The enchilada was runny....strangest soupy mess I've encountered. So I mushed them both together for some balance. Rice is rice, beans are beans....nothing else to say about them both. My coworker and spouse ordered taco salad, heavy on lettuce, little meat and cheese and NO sour cream or guacamole. Of course there was no waiter around to ask what the h*ll? To top it off we had to get up, find a waiter and ask for a bill! No wonder the place was nearly empty at lunchtime...it's the damn ungrateful customers.. Right? Would I go back... Heck no. But the best part of the meal? Didn't cost me a dime, the spouse paid!!
(1)Kristin R.
Not good:( I was really hoping it would be. staff was friendly but awkward. We were sat and received our salsa and chips which were nothing special but no one seemed to want to take our drink order. When the waiter came to take our order he just stood there without saying a word which was really strange. I order the burrito verde and my boyfriend just order a few beef tacos. The food came out surprisingly fast but it had absolutely no flavor. Burrito was mushy with dry tasteless meat inside. My boyfriends tacos were a greasy mess he said they were eh. Also while we were eating they was a lady, clearly a meth head, just wandering around the restaurant. The whole vibe was bad and we couldn't wait to get outta there. Maybe they were having a bad night but we will not try this place again.
(1)Jay H.
I was very disappointed. We were not really show to a table. They waiter gave a kind of head nod to an empty both from across the room. Then just dropped menus on the table as he walked passed the table. It took about 5 minutes to just get the complimentary chips, salsa and bean dip. The salsa resembled a chunky tomato soup, definitely straight out of a can with zero flavor. The bean dip made have been made in house as it had burnt beans in the bowl. The waiter finally showed back up to attemt to take our order. I do say attempt, because he had to come back twice more to remind himself of what we ordered and to asked question he didn't the first time. Our drink orders were taking an exhuberant amount of time to arrive, iced tea and water. As we continued waiting now for our food, tables that had arrived after us started getting their food. Their waiter finally started helping and found our food in the back. The poor service had already put a damper on my appetite. And the food only worsened the experience. The beef burrito and chicken enchilada had the exact same red sauce with scant amounts of what may have been chedder cheese as it had been left in a warmer for too long. I had to ask the other waiter, almost certain our waiter had been abducted or quit, if he could locate a tamale side we had ordered. I am not sure what he returned with could have been considered a tamale. There were four chunks of masa, one of which had a clump of shredded pork (?). It was hard to tell as the whole thing had been drowned in the mysterious red sauce and burnt cheese concotion.

Came in on a Tuesday night, so the place was nice and quiet. The lounge can get a little warm, as it is next to the kitchen, but the staff was more than happy to open the door for ventilation. Best steak fajitas I've ever had. The steak was tender and lean, and seasoned very well. Onions and peppers were flash fried in the skillet perfectly, giving them color and sear, while staying crisp. Served with a side plate of rice, beans, and condiments.
(5)Shauna F.
My mexican restaurant go to meal when I can't decide is always carne asada (tender charbroiled skirt steak) with beans and rice and it did not disappoint at Plaza Jalisco. : ) I also loved that they give you beans with the chips and salsa. The inside of this place is sort of cheezy but the service is always kind, attentive, with a little bit of a dry sense of humor that I can appreciate.
(4)Macriley M.
Food was bland, service was horribly slow - however the waiter was so cheerful and nice, I had to forgive him a little.
(2)Ryan B.
We came in with a part of 6. The service was extremely slow. Took forever to get our order in. One of our party was skipped over twice. Took a while to check out. And we were the only people in the place. The food was ok. The meat was seasoned with too much pepper. They just need to be more in the ball with their customer service.
(2)Ben P.
This place is going downhill fast. Showed up for lunch a few weeks ago. Stood at the check in stand for about 3 minutes and didn't see or hear a single person in the restaurant. Left and went to taco bell.
(1)Nick M.
The food was not good. Service was worse. The waiter brought the wrong meal then tried to argue why we should have what he brought instead of correcting the order. The food wasn't good in any event, so didn't really matter. Was all around a bad experience.
(2)Annah S.
We came here on vacation and were sorely disappointed. The food was bland and uneasy on the eyes. The service was practically non-existent. We feel really sad that we made the decision to come here. Don't make the same mistake we did.
(1)Meg S.
Excellent place! They were closing and they felt bad that nothing really would be open and they let us in. Food came quick and huge portions. I ordered enchiladas and they were delicious. Service was among the best. Plates were hot and they even packed out leftovers for us. Very nice and personable people! A real gem!

We just got done eating here on a Friday night. The food was absolutely fabulous. My husband especially liked the shrimp dish. However, the atmosphere left a lot to be desired. There were at least five kids screaming and kicking and generally making it a very unpleasant experience. Unfortunately, while it may not be the owners of the restaurant's problem, it really did make for a generally not so great experience. We might try it again but on a different night of the week or perhaps sit in the bar which had two booths and had we known in advance what kind of craziness would be in the dining room we would've ended up in in the first place.
