As a resident, my goal is to taste one of everything Ashland has to offer, and I can tell you hands down that the Winchester has one of the most sophisticated tables in town. I normally have go-to favourites in the establishments I frequent - especially at breakfast time - but here it's always a struggle: do I have lobster and boursin stuffed crepes with orange hollandaise, the crab bennie with avocado and swiss, or the amazing raspberry & lemon curd french toast that tastes like you're having dessert for brekkies? People tend to look at you weird if you order all three. Dinner isn't any easier. I could (and often DO) make an entire meal (or two) from their small plates selection, but it's hard to resist diving full-on into the entrees: The potato-crusted wild salmon is totally of-the-moment, and my friend Kathleen might actually commit a crime to get her hands on their duck breast with huckleberry glaze. I can't even talk about the desserts here. I'm too ashamed ;-) In all, the Winch is one of Ashland's finest, a place to eat an elegant brunch, celebrate an anniversary, and take your out of town guests when you want to show off. You'll never have a bad meal here.

When first reviewing this place, there weren't very many reviews on the actual Inn, so I was just taking a random leap of faith. Called ahead of time, and what really prompted me to come here, was their discounted winter rates. It was our last nights stay on our trip and we had exhausted all our money. We really needed a comfortable yet affordable place. For just under $95 or so with tax, we had a queen room with a view of the snow laden mountains and cute little town on the hill. When I first called they had told us we'd get the Sunset Room, but when we checked in they gave us the Marjorie Roy Room due to the NYE noise that might have affected our night at the first. I found that thoughtful, so I don't really know what our cost would of really given us. But I liked what I got. The carpet was outdated and worn, that's my only complaint, but everything else was great. Especially the bed, large bathroom, and 2 homemade pastry treats waiting for us in the room. What was that? Yum! I like the proximity to the little downtown area. Breakfast was a two course meal, and it had a very English fancy feel. Started off with a sweet scone, and maple nut butter, and a few berries. Next my choice was eggs benedict, spinach/mushroom fontina, or oatmeal. I had the oatmeal and added berries, brown sugar, soy milk, and nutts with it. It was steel cut oats which is a nice change to normal oatmeal you get other places. Very tasty. Definitely a charming place.

Brunch was very good. The scones served right before brunch were mind-blowing. I've never had such a light and crispy pastry from a restaurant or store before. They are like our closely guarded family recipe.

Everything was overly salty. I was expecting something wonderful instead left feeling disappointed, not worth the money spent.

Great little place to stay in Ashland, I slept horribly the first night so we came to the conclusion that I might be slightly allergic to down, and since they make the beds up with down everything they told us to go enjoy our day and they would strip the bed and get rid of all the down. I slept like a baby the second night. Breakfast was superb and an unexpected bonus since it comes with the room price. Had dinner there the second night, it was good the plating was a little out of the seventies or maybe sixties. We all had different entries between the four of us and every plate had the same vegetables, I don't know but I found that just a little lacking in thought.

Our stay here was a tale of two hotels. We were first placed in the carriage house and didn't like it. There was no hot water and the wifi didn't work. They promptly put us in a beautiful suite in the main hotel and we loved it. It had high ceilings and beautiful old windows. The bed was beyond exceptional as were the linens and pillows. The bathroom was large and classy with every amenity. The bathtub was large and perfect and the shower had crystal glass and was also very nice. We stayed in the Fordyce Suite and I can't imagine anyone not enjoying it. The front desk people and cleaning people were all very friendly and eager to make our stay nice. We also really enjoyed the breakfast but found the dinner to be unexceptional. This would be the place we would return to when visiting Ashland.

Utterly disappointed in the lack of professionalism in Winchester Inn. Planning for our first trip around southern Oregon, we spent hours researching the area of Medford, Ashland and Jacksonville - learning about what to do and what refreshing lodging options are available. Based on quotes such as this from southernoregon.org : "One of the top 75 hotels in the US (Conde Nast Reader's Poll). Four Victorian buildings, 19 rooms and suites. English tiered gardens, Victorian charm and contemporary amenities. One of the 'best small inns on the west coast' (Sunset magazine)," we thought that it's worth visiting this supposedly great inn at this price. However, we can stay only for one night. This is where the whole thing goes wrong. Winchester Inn provides preferential treatment to reservations at the cost of damaging professionalism and respect to customers. After hours of such research, we finally made reservation to two rooms for one night. On the website, it notes to confirm with the staff before ensuring everything is final. We did. We called in to ensure they got our reservation for the two rooms for one night. They confirmed the reservation (twice even) and noted that the confirmation email message will be sent the next day. In the afternoon the next day, the staff messaged and commented that one of the rooms is now unavailable. Calling to find out what happens, we learned that because this other room is now reserved by someone who is staying for several nights; the staff asked us to try to reserve another room. I don't know about Conde Nast or Sunset Magazine, as most reviewers probably were impressed by the food and dining, as are reviewers here on Yelp. From all the reviews I've read, this type of incident is not recorded frequently; however, just now reading all the reviews here on Yelp, I also find that this is not the first time that Winchester Inn changes reservation on unsuspected customers on a whim. If you are willing to accept lack of professionalism from any business, even unknowingly, not to mention at this price range, please proceed. For me, it doesn't even deserve any star. I am not even talking about expecting an American Express Black card treatment yet. A business that is willing to change on you without notice after confirmation, not even the politeness to ask whether it's OK, is a business without principle and respect.

This is a wonderful restaurant in close proximity to the Shakespeare Festival theaters. The menu wand service was exceptional. Special mention to Holly our server who made excellent recommendations on both wine and menu items. Make sure to check in on yelp for a special complimentary chef prepared appetizer.

Don't be fooled by all of the 4 and 5 star reviews! This place is good, but I was not amazed. We didn't stay here, we just ate here, so 3 stars come from just an okay dinner. The building itself is a beautiful old Victorian with lovely gardens and a nice outdoor dining patio. We were seated inside in a quiet room with just one other table-a tipsy older couple who were arguing most of the time-slightly uncomfortable since we could hear everything! Though admittedly, it was kind of amusing as well. The Winchester's menu is great. We had done our research before coming to town, looked at many menus online, and after reading so many positive reviews, decided that this would be the place! Since all of the small plates looked amazing, we decided to just try all of them in lieu of ordering entrees. And... I was successively disappointed in this order: The duck confit on endive leaves was far too salty and pungent for me, but my boyfriend loved them. The beet carpaccio and butter lettuce salad had barely 5 paltry slivers of beets on the plate. It was good enough, but being the beet freak that I am, it was certainly not what I had envisioned. The scallop in tarragon cream sauce was cooked well, but the sauce seemed a bit watery. The crabcake we ordered was served with bacon. Normally, I am a fan of ANYTHING with bacon, but in this case, the flavor of the bacon overwhelmed the sweet crabmeat. The mini wellingtons with filet mignon and mushrooms were tasty, but the pastry shell was soft, and the meat inside was overcooked, almost like they had been put in a microwave or something. I was really excited to try the parsnip and potato gnocchi with wild mushrooms, but that also was kind of bland. We ended up picking out the mushrooms and taking the rest to go. (That to-go ended up in the hands of a young homeless man who, after inquiring if it was vegetarian, proclaimed, "Thank you! All I've had to eat today was crab cakes!" Apparently the homeless eat quite well in Ashland!) Our server was prompt polite, professional, and pointed us in the direction of a nice bottle of Syrah which was probably the highlight of the meal for me. Just wanted to give you all a heads up out there. If you are not from the area, (which we are not) and are looking to enjoy one nice meal out for a special occasion, try Amuse. (we wish we did!)

WOW! This place is incredible! From the beautiful Victorian and it's incredible rooms, to the very gracious hosts, to the amazing food and exemplary service from all the staff. You cannot go wrong to stay here!!! I highly recommend it!

I am so glad we gave The Winchester another chance. We had a perfect evening there last night. We enjoyed viewing the gardens while sampling the lavender Margarita and the watermelon jalapeno tequila. Both delightful and not overly sweet. We both had the duck breast which was prepared with a marsh mellow and cocoa nibs risotto. The duck was very tender and every component of the dish was faultless. The plate contained fresh asparagus, purple cauliflower, grated red cabbage(or possibly beets) in pickled beet juice, tiny lentils, and roasted cherry tomatoes. It was a beautiful presentation. The unusual and delicious risotto paired beautifully with the duck. As always the service was perfect. Drew the manager really walks the extra mile to make a memorable evening.

Every time I visit my friends in Ashland we have Sunday brunch at the Winchester. And every time the food, decor and service are top notch. This visit I had scones and the special that day, a mushroom omelet which I loved. I usually have a mimosa but decided on coffee that day since we had an active afternoon scheduled. Even the coffee is great. I think the place is elegant and charming. Our young waitress was very pleasant and helpful. Food great. I look forward to coming here again!

We stayed at the Inn and ate one or our dinners at the restaurant. The room was perfect for us. The breakfasts were way too large for us but were well done. The dinner menu was interesting and very good. Our only negative was the dessert. The vanilla ice cream tasted old and the lemon sorbet had ice crystals in it. If I could take off only 1/2 star I would.

As restaurants in Ashland go, this is one of the tops. (I can't speak to the hotel part of this business). I've lived here six years, and I don't know why it has taken me so long to get to this place to eat, but last night my lovely bride chose it for our dinner date. There is a quiet restrained ambiance upon entering, not quite formal, but pleasant to the senses. Our table looked over the outside gardens, in a pleasing bay in the main dining area. As I looked ovet the menu, my head was nodding "yes" to everything. Simple descriptions of luscious food, nothing more. The waitstaff was eager to please, attentive, not overbearing. And the food lived up to what I was seeing on the menu. We started with a shared appetizer of Panko Crusted Green Beans with three dipping sauces. Think Tempura meets french aioli sauces - one lemon garlic, one berry wasabi, and one I don't remember except that it disappeared first. Perfectly done beans, with just the right amount of crisp on the outside. Yummmmmm. The ten entree selections all caught my eye. I found myself leaning towards the smoked duck or lamb shank, and the waiter suggested that he favored the duck. Get this: Crispy Smoked Duck Breast with Vodka Tomato Sauce, Goat Cheese Pink Peppercorn Gnocchi, and Cauliflower Puree artistically angled on a square serving platter. The flavors - subtle luscious cauliflower puree, smoky duck and sauce, and the peppercorn gnocchi complemented each other accoumpanied by Eden Vale Tempranillo (I gotta go get a case of that). I think when I first read the menu, I blocked out the "cauliflower puree." I mean, it sounds.... Yuck. But no, it is a superb delicate balance against the acidity of the vodka tomato sauce and the peppercorn gnocchi. My wife had the Catch of the Day: Macademia Crusted Red Snapper with Arugula Polenta and Lemon Grass Zabaglione accompanied with panko crusted asparagus. She raved about it - creamy polenta, perfect fish, rolling eyes of appreciation. Alas, we had no desert, but I'll save room next time. Now that I know how good the food is, I'll be back, over and over till I've tried everything on the menu. The bill including two cocktails, and three glasses of wine came to $98. BTW, the wine list is extensive, and the restaurant has a Wine Spectator Award which they proudly display. The bar is cushy, subtle live jazzguitar on Friday and Saturday evenings Note: The approach is not disabled friendly. I'm currently on crutches, second street is at its steepest here, and the walk way is tilting brick street side. I believe there is an elevator off the alley for those who are otherwise challenged. Call ahead.

Winchester is a unique and beautiful spot in Ashland and my family and I had always been curious to try their highly praised brunch. When we finally did a while back, we all left a little underwhelmed. The meal and portions were ok, but the price was a little high. I've definitely had a better breakfast at a local joint. I shared the Meyer Lemon Waffle with fresh raspberries, lemon curd and pistachio, and a dish of freshly made crepes with sauteed apples and a champagne vanilla bean glaze. My dad got a quiche. The waffles were tasty but the lemon curd was a bit sweet and tasted like it had too much powdered sugar. The crepes were flavorless and the only thing I could taste were the apples and champagne flavor. Definitely unimpressed with that dish. The quiche was decent, but it came in such a small slice that we didn't have enough bites to really determine what we thought of it. However, the brunch came with a complimentary glass of orange juice and each person got a delicious, freshly made scone w/ nut butter. The scone was buttery and perfect! It was so good that I came back to order some more (they only make scones Sun. and Wed. and they give you 3 for $3.75) The Winchester Brunch was a good one-time meal, and I would come back for the scones alone. But for breakfast, I think I am going to try Morning Glory and only go back some other time to try the Winchester for dinner...

Great happy hour with tasty hors d'ouevres.

Enjoyed an appetizer at the bar. Gnocchi was incredible. Crab cake with bacon underneath was luscious. Enjoyed some great local pours from a neighboring winery with our meal. Owen, the bartender is top notch Irish fellow - very charming. We each took a glass of wine out on the gazebo and enjoyed an early summer evening. Great memories!

Nice get away in the Ashland area. Good food, nice rooms, very close to Shakepeare open air theatre

This review is just for the restaurant. Was there on Saturday night for my big birthday dinner. There were 14 of us. We started with appetizers and drinks at the Gazebo in the garden, and then were all seated outside for dinner....fortunately, the weather was extremely cooperative. One waitress was assigned to us for the whole evening; she was a bit overworked but did a fantastic job. She was extremely flexible, kept on saying "whatever you want" and meant it! The food was almost uniformly great. Appetizers, especially the mini beef Wellingtons were fantastic, entrees were all quite good although some of the entrees arrived warm rather than hot. This was understandable given the size of our party and the one waitress. One of our party got the halibut special and said it was ok.....not special :-) Desserts seemed to be well appreciated by all; I got the chocolate dessert (a cake like substance stuffed into a tube of chocolate candy) that was a bit dry, but still ok. Overall, I was extremely impressed by the professionalism of the staff, the quality food, and the great setting. WAY to go...and thanks for making my birthday celebration really special.

As a family of four with two young children we thoroughly enjoyed our stay at The Winchester Inn. The accommodations, charming atmosphere, friendly staff and delicious food made this Thanksgiving one to remember. We would recommend this Inn to anyone!
(5)Janet S.
I would stay there again. This is a cut above all the other B and B's around. Yes, it's called an Inn, but we'll call it a B and B today as the breakfasts are included. The food is wonderful. The rooms are all really nice. If they smoothed over the few rough edges, it would be darned near perfect. The house next door to the main house - the green carpet needs to be cleaned, and the white furniture in the room needs a cleaning. I didn't enjoy climbing the stairs to my room looking at that carpet. But those are the only two things I didn't like.
(4)Reid B.
Serves a solid brunch, with tasty scones. Go visit Andy in the wine bar, talk to him, and enjoy a wine flight. It's worth it.
(4)Kris K.
Party of two for thanksgiving dinner. Although the full dinner price was affordable and fair, we were never told prior to eating that we would be charged a 25% tip !! I have never heard of this! It was very outrageous considering the fact that most of our tab was from the cost of our wine. The waiter was friendly, but the dinner bill was twice as much as we were expecting. I just think that it is very tacky for an establishment to do that to it's customers without warning. I pride myself on being a 20% tipper, more when warranted, but this was so very unprofessional. It is sad, because food can be decent, the ambiance alright, service nice, and time with a loved one wonderful... Then the unexpected can throw it all off. I just hope the service crew got the extra dough I wasn't expecting to shell out and not the management or owners. Seems as though they take care of their employees by screwing the diners. It just wasn't THAT impressive. Not 25% of my bill impressive. We will never return here. Shady.

great breakfast for B&B, nice rooms

The Winchester Inn is one of the best kept secrets of Ashland. They compete with the Peerless as one of the best places for a gourmet meal, and you can't help but read the menu over and over, debating all the yummy meals they have to offer. Call ahead for reservations, and they'll do a great job of getting you in and out just in time for an OSF show.
(5)Eric H.
I go to the Winchester in all sorts of different moods; the atmosphere accommodates me when I am looking to sit outside and catch up with a group of friends, sit inside alone and read a book, or take a lady out for a special night. The wine bar is one of my favorite aspects, as Drew can carry a great conversation on wine, and they sometimes have live music, or host tastings. The food is delicious and varied, and the menu changes so there is always something interesting!
(5)Nicholas N.
Holy smokes this is where taste buds go on vacation. Had the scallops topped with foie gras. Killer! The cheese plate was amazing. Rogue valley blue cheese was the best. Had a smokey flavor. Did the wine flight as well, delicious. Had breakfast two days back to back. Best scone I've had in a looooonnng time. The froth on the Capp. Was like meringue! Wait staff was superior. When the only complaint one can muster is that the tub had no shelving for your shampoo you know your in the right place. She wants to add that the tub was big but boxy, not conducive for lounging. We had Enders room. A/C worked great. Straight walk to the box office for a play and close to everything you want to do downtown. Would definitely recommend. The kind of place where you get what you pay for.
(5)Peter S.
The scallop/foie gras dish was good. The crab cake app was huge, but tasted a little fishy for crab. My wife ordered the stuffed quail, which was the winner of the evening, particularly the figs that came with the dish. I ordered the filet mignon and requested that it be cooked medium. It came out rare - which is ok for a lot of folks when ordering filet. I sent it back to get some more time in the oven but it came back almost as bloody. The whole meal was just ok. Service was fine.

The WIR is a beautiful property and has garden views from every window in the dining room. My wife and I had looked at many reviews and talked to friends who go to Ashland and had a hard time making a decision between Cocina Biazi, Amuse and here. Odd to me that none of my Mount Shasta friends who visit Ashland a lot recommended WIR. I got the strange comments about it being stuffy or lacking energy or that the wine bar is great but the dining pretentious. WIR proved all my friends to really not know what they are talking about. I am wondering if any of them have dined here and didn't just stick their nose in and then up and out. This was a first class experience with a wait staff that was not pretentious in the least. They were personable and attentive without being smothering. I brought my own bottle of wine ($15 corkage) that was not expensive but a Russian River Bugay Syrah Rose (could have easily been commented on to the negative) that my wife and I choose because was something we could enjoy with all courses of the meal and drink between the two of us. The Sommelier opened it up and poured for us without a slight hint of disapproval. Our waiter, Drew, was helpful with recommendations when asked for them. I had the crab cakes and my wife the mini-wellingtons for appetizer. Both were excellent and came out quickly though we gave the nod to the crab cakes due to wonderful citrusy cream sauce and the plating garnish of bacon soaked in something sweet that provided a wonderful textural and taste counterpoint to the crab and sauce. It also paired well with our wine. The sweet potato/yam soup was delectable and my wife liked that. I enjoyed the grilled romaine with Rogue Creamery Blue Cheese and bacon. Both well executed. For dinner my wife got the pork chop that had a kind of maple syrup glaze. I had the duck with a cranberry compote of some kind on one side and orange sauce on the other. Both dishes were very good with the pork chop cooked at about medium well (just slightly pink) which was perfect. My duck was a bit past the medium-rare I ordered but very tasty. The deconstructed lemon meringue for dessert was our fave over the lemon sorbet. The lemon sorbet was served as a palate cleanser and we liked it before the main course. As a dessert it was just not lemony enough. My only other slight quibble was the same vegetable garnish was served with the mini-wellington's as my wife's main course. My duck came with an incredible parsnip puree. I would give them 4.5 if yelp supported that rating and would definitely go back. The meal with tip was $150. A lot of money but we were not sorry to have spent it because WIR delivered on all fronts - atmosphere, service, and food.

We have been here three nights in The Courtyard Suite traveling with our daughter and in town visiting our other daughter and sightseeing. The room is beautiful with a queen bed and a sleeper love-seat that they make-up for us daily with a very comfortable air mattress. I love the air conditioning, which is quiet and gets the room cool in a hurry. We also have a nice minibar area with a sink and fridge. A real coffee pot and fresh ground coffee are thoughtful touches too. The grounds are lovely and we are a 5 minute walk to the plays. Breakfast is perfect and we have been able to include our daughter who is not staying here, which is very convenient. My only negative would be in the bathroom where they jammed a huge jacuzzi tub and left room for a just tiny shower. We would definitely stay here again.
(5)Mike M.
After 30 years if having an annual Sunday Brunch here,we find that the new owners of the restaurant "doesn't want to do that anymore" We had 8 in our party and we are now looking for another restaurant yo celebrate the end of out trip. 4 of the people were going to book room reservations but are now staying at the Ashland Springs Hotel. It looks like they have a nice brunch Very dissapointed.

Stayed in the Barbara Howard suite, one of the most expensive rooms. It's from the 1980s ... which is likely why there are no pictures on the website, save the bed. In the website picture, there is a nice drapery behind the headboard of the bed -- no such luck during our stay. The bed, itself, is a dark green, extremely squeaky hollow metal bed. The linens are clean and comfortable. Mattress is fine, as are the feather pillows. The furniture is dated, cheap, and some (like the loveseat) are dirty and worn; the one exception is a dresser with a marble top and lovely mirrors opposite the bed -- it's beautiful and in good shape (and there is a cute, small glass vase with some fresh flowers). Carpet is a bit worn, but clean enough that I went barefoot. The wall paint is light green ... the bathroom floor tiles are teal green, with dirty-looking dark grout. The jetted bathtub surround is banged up and has light green tiles around the top. The separate shower is 1980s pinkish and light green tile (some cracked) with dark grout). The toilet is old and the bowl seems to be stained or dirty (I thought there were sand granules in the bowl but they don't go away upon flushing). The door to the bathroom is cheap, plastic material. An ensemble of shiny brass -- from light fixtures and door knobs, to electrical plug and switch plates -- are throughout. There is a gas fireplace, about 3 feet from the aforementioned loveseat, flanked by a cheesy faux-silk fern. There is no table in front of the loveseat -- so in order to drink our champagne and eat our cheese plate, we had to take one of the end tables from beside the bed. There is a small refrigerator with water and few other beverages (wine, beer, coffee and tea), and small coffee maker. There were also two not super fresh coconut (not French) macaroons. No other snacks in the room. Ice bucket was filled upon arrival. The layout of the room is odd and uncomfortable to hang out in. The "front" door opens right into the side of the bed. Privacy is only garnered by closing the drapes as the bed looks over the building next door (which has the restaurant in it) and a back door which shares a landing with the room next door and the alley way (3 flights of stairs down). The bathroom is overly large and a waste of space. There are no elevators. When they say this suite has a separate living room area, know that there is no way to close off the two rooms - so the rooms are not completely separate. Upon check-in, around 5:30 pm, no one was at the front desk. They were busy with dinner service and I caught the attention of someone who was very friendly and did apologize and promptly checked us in and provided someone to assist us with our luggage. There is parking in back for overnight guests. They do have turn-down service. The hallway carpet in this building seems new(er) and is nice. However, there are faux silk flowers throughout -- just a bit tacky. The first floor entry is odd - in that there is a piece of furniture blocking what used to be a door. And, the stained glass window in the front door (to the outside) is literally about to fall out (they know about it and have been trying to find someone to fix or replace it -- meanwhile there isn't any sign (that I saw) telling guests about its precariousness). Overall -- would not stay here again; I don't book accommodations based on "value" (it's okay when that happens serendipitously), but I just think this place is terribly overpriced for what it is ... I get that the pricing is largely for folks who come to stay for theater ... however, that's not us ... we typically stop around here on our way between the Bay Area and Seattle ... so it's not a good fit for us. Still like the cabins along the river at the Weasku Inn in Grants Pass/Rogue River City better. Were the room updated and better furnished and laid out, I'd feel better about paying almost $400 for the room (with taxes, etc.) -- and, my husband feels the same way (which is somewhat validating, as I'm super picky ... and he's less so). This review is not for the restaurant ... I will post that review, separately.

This is our second night of dining this weekend. Another good meal. We had a lovely foie gras couple with a nice, inexpensive Limoux sparkling wine. We shared a nice butternut lettuce salad. This was a nice starry to the evening. Rebecca ordered the ribeye; the meat was fabulous. However, her vegetables were too salty. My duck was equally fabulous. It was served with a huckleberry reduction. My vegetables were good. We asked our server about wine choices and he admitted he could not answer our questions. He found someone very quickly who made a wonderful recommendation. We had great service. Our only complaint is price. We had an equally good dinner last night for half the price. We will come back. However, we will go to the other place more often.

Another wonderful stay at our very favorite place in Oregon! We have stayed here for over 25 yrs and it just gets better !! The rooms are all so very special .. The breakfast is the best and the wine bar is really special with the bar bites! Friday night they had a wonderful guitar player .. We are so happy to always have Winchester Inn to look forward to! I have a wine country retreat in Sonoma and have used Michael and Lori's same designs to make the cottage as nice as the Winchester Inn ... Thank you Gibbs family you are all the best!

Not only is this place an amazing place to stay, with staff that bend over backwards to make sure you have everything you need, but the food at the restaurant is amazing. The poached eggs over sourdough toast with black pepper sauce was one of the best breakfasts I have ever had. This place has to be one of the best things about Ashland. Say hi to Sarah. She's awesome.

This place is Great. Outstanding customer service. The breakfast food is amazing. I had the best valentines day ever. The owners were particularly kind and accommodating.

Gayle and I had drinks here in the bar one late afternoon after an OSF performance. It was a bit rainy and grey and our window seat was a perfect place to look out, relax, and enjoy each others company. The bar was small, rustic, and comfortable. The Service from our Irish waiter was friendly and engaging, Gayle's Bombay Sapphire Martini was made just the way she liked it, and the bar bites were tasty (especially the beer battered fries and the Mini Wellingtons. My only quibble is that beer is available in the bottle or the can only. We dined at the Restaurant (now called Alchemy) the next evening. Gayle and I try to have one "fancy schmancy" meal during our annual Ashland trip, and our experience here was second only to the Peerless Restaurant. We ordered a bottle of Rose, and proceeded to enjoy a nice (albeit rich) sequence of appetizers, main courses (Lobster Tail and an amazing vegetarian dish), and a version of "chocolate death" (and coffee) for dessert. Yes, the meal was a little dear, but for the Oregon value, it was money well spent. We had a window seat again, and were able to linger over our food and each other as we had no play to attend. As a Date Night, it would be hard to do better than this.

I've been here a few times with a large group. We sit in the wine cellar and get personal service. The food has always been good, but they surpassed themselves tonight. They had a special cream of mushroom soup that was heavenly. The short ribs were so tender that they felt apart and melted in my mouth. The BBQ sauce was tangy and sweet. It was complemented by sweet potatoes and blue cheese. They have a fantastic wine selection. We arrived early and ordered a couple cocktails. I asked for a hurricane on a whim and they made one but it tasted odd. When they found out, they took it back and fixed it.

Just wanted to offer a quick update: my sweetie and I went back for dinner here two months back and I never got around to writing about our fabulous time here. First and foremost, the two Drews who work as waiters here are awesome. We had "dark" Drew, the brunette, this past visit, although I've had light (blonde) Drew before. They are not only best friends, but they are both truly fantastic waiters who offer impeccable, memorable service, perfect wine recommendations, and fun banter. We very much enjoyed chatting with dark Drew about where he likes to eat locally. He's a very cool, intelligent guy and I respect his food/wine opinions and really liked having him as our waiter. How was the food? Stinkin' amazing, what did you think?! Winchester is still my favorite upscale dining destination in the valley. My bf, who is a veggie, had the most incredible, fluffy, pillowy gnocchi that either of us has ever had the fortune of devouring. WOW. These can't be ignored! The chef then whipped up a vegetarian entree just for him and my bf absolutely loved it. I had the Duck Confit and Humboldt Fog stuffed Endive leaves with honey thyme glazed walnuts and pickled radish appetizer and boy did I savor every last bite. Fantastic. We both adored the sweet potato and marshmallow soup-- how creative is that? It was divine. For my entree, I got the pork chop with mustard greens and French triple cream brie mac n' cheese. It was delicious, especially that mac n cheese. Yum! Winchester has an extensive, intimidating wine list. Don't be afraid to ask your waiter for a recommended pairing-- they know their stuff and will steer you in the right direction and will take your price range into consideration. Overall, this was a wonderful dinner out in Ashland. This is THE place to go around here for a special occasion. Yes, it's pricey, but it's worth it. You won't be disappointed, and you will enjoy the two Drews as much as we do-- we ran into them both at Taste of Ashland and I felt compelled to give them props here because they are both so deserving and my bf and I were so happy to see them again, that's how cool they both are. So go eat here, give them nice tips, and enjoy a spectacular meal in an intimate, quaint little eatery.

- Another great place to dine in Ashland. Based on other favorable reviews, we decided to go for fine dining here, and we weren't disappointed. - Our experience with the service was great. Although the waitress didn't seem to know about the Yelp check-in

We stayed only one night, but were able to experience the delightful hospitality the Winchester Inn offers it's guests. It's in a perfect location just off of Main St and walkable to everything. Our room was beautifully appointed and very comfortable. The included breakfast was spectacular and the staff went out of their way to accommodate my dietary restrictions. Highly recommend.

We had an excellent time. Thanks to Drew and the rest of the staff. Also, prepare for a wee bit of silliness in this review. Butter. Soft and seasoned with sea salt and parsley. Easily spread and very tasty. 5 out of 5. Ambiance. Very posh. Beautiful jacquard table clothes, fancy push button salt shakers, comfy chairs, well apportioned seating. They moved us from of first table to one overlooking the patio and gardens of the inn. Fabulous. Best table ever. 5 Bonus point; neighbor cat in the yard and all the staff loving it. Meowser/Robber likes to curl up in the bird bath right in front of the window and also to visit with guests. We are told he has expensive taste and often accepts handouts of scallops and fois gras from guests, and still manages to be trim. Food. Excellent. Chef's appetizer was a crostata mounded with crab, micro greens and candied bacon. Mini beef wellingtons: yes, please! Delicious beet and endive dish. Don't forget dessert; espresso pot du creme with truffle and pear tart were delectable. 5 Service. Excellent. Drew got us out to the play on time. All the staff were smiling and seeming to enjoy themselves. All were very friendly and team oriented. 5 Beer list. Short but decent. Extra points for having two Russian River sours on the menu. Might be our new favorite special dining spot.

Stayed for two nights in early November and had a wonderful time. Our room had a magnificent view of the gardens... which were full of the beautiful fall foliage. The bed was amazingly comfortable and the linens were sublime. The fireplace kept us nice and cozy. The shower was huge and so was the jacuzzi tub. We enjoyed drinks at the Alchemy Bar one night and Dinner at Alchemy the second. We had such a great experience we're thinking of making this an annual getaway!

Had a wonderful supper with my wife, son and future daughter-in-law. We were walk-ins but accommodated with a table at the bar which was quite nice, not a compromise. Food throughout was fantastic, with a simple gnocchi appetizer standing out as the big surprise, but all other mains very good as well. Service was first rate with our Irish bartender. Would have merited 5 stars but the portion size of the black cod was smaller than I would give a 6 year old (all other portion sizes were normal), and the pricing is over the top even if the food / ambience / service was solid to excellent.

Owen is truly an excellent alchemist. Try the Death in the Afternoon. Great experience!

Best dinner we've had in Ashland in years. We come here annually from the SF Bay Area for many years and find most of the local restaurants to be quite ordinary and a bit over-priced for what you get. This restaurant is special and worth the price. We shared the foie gras (which you can't get in California) and the portion was small but delicious. The flank steak was excellent as were the side dishes and the duck was also outstanding. The apple tarte dessert was fabulous. We'll be back next year for sure.

We've stayed at the Inn two times now. Our favorite B&B with regards to room choices, room quality and service. The complimentary breakfasts are one of the highlights of this excellent B&B. Creative, tasty, great texture and beautiful on the plate. Their home fries are the best anywhere. We've also eaten dinner here many times, as well as gotten appetizers from the same kitchen served in the bar. Easily one of the best places to eat in Ashland. Not cheap but worth it. As with the inn, we've never been disappointed by the food and the service is excellent.

Had a wonderful dinner in the very cozy bar. We started with corn chowder and roasted beet with duck breast salad and finished with a trio of yummy sliders and mini beef Wellingtons. Topped it all off with a deconstructed lemon meringue pie. Friendly bartender also made a great recommendation on a lovely white wine. We will definitely go back again.

It's been a rather long time since I've been back, but I would recommend trying them at least once. First place I've ever tried rabbit- was absolutely delicious! Had a nice herbed dressing inside & melted in your mouth. I really MUST go back again lol

We stayed here the first night of our honeymoon and it was wonderful. They upgraded us to the courtyard suite and had a bottle of bubbly waiting for us on them. Our suite was so beautiful with a private entrance through the garden. Their was even a huge bathtub with jets and candles aligning the tub. The best part was the ridiculously soft robes and the incredibly soft sheets. They even sell them...they are that good. Our breakfast the next morning was delicious. Great presentation and flavor. I will need to come back to have dinner, the kitchen was closed when we were their. Would highly recommend. We walked to everything.

Outstanding. It's a really intimate little restaurant now called Alchemy. We ate here before going to a play at the Shakespeare Festival. We stared off with the soup of the day: a melon and coconut cold number with a pomegranate yogurt swirl and lavender. The dinner, Oregon raised lamb, was good and well presented. Parsnip purée replaced potatoes, making for a sweeter and healthier side dish. I definitely recommend.

My husband and I recently visited Winchester Inn for our 1st year wedding anniversary on July 1st. I hadn't ever heard of this place before, despite visiting Ashland every summer for the past 6 years due to it being located off the main drag where most tourists wander about. After reading an abundance of awesome reviews for it on Yelp, I asked my husband if it sounded like a great place to celebrate and I can't tell you how pleased I am that we did. Our server, Drew, of whom I hear is a certified sommelier, was nothing short of spectacular. He congratulated us on our celebration as soon as he learned the reason for our visit and paced our whole dining experience in such a way that it could it only be described as a wonderful dream. The ambiance of the restaurant was the exact sort of romance we were hoping for. Though we would have preferred to have dined outside in their gorgeously landscaped patio and garden, our quiet table suited us just as well. Perhaps next time!! We started our dinner off with two glasses of Nicolas Champagne and went on to enjoy the starters and more. We shared most everything we enjoyed that evening and I had the most moist crab cake I've ever had the privilege of trying. It was set upon slices of tomato, candied bacon, meyer lemon confit and topped with micro greens. My husband had the poached artichoke leaves topped with a mixture of Dungeness crab, a green garlic aioli and candied bacon. We then moved on to try the Green Goddess salad which was wonderfully light and the soup de jour which was a watermelon gazpacho! I told Drew that I was torn between the filet and the scallops and welcomed any recommendation he had to make. He informed me that the filet mignon was by far the most popular dish, so my husband and I both ordered the same thing. I had previously read on Yelp in reviews to ask for an adequate wine pairing due to their extensive wine list and did just that. Drew inquired as to what our budget was and suggested one he thought would pair best. I can't say how happy I am that he did. The filet was melt in your mouth amazing. It was truly remarkable and the bottle of 2004 Chateau Pichon-Longueville de Baron complemented every bite. The chef, Billy, came out and greeted us which I though was lovely, particularly since he did such an amazing job. You can taste the passion of a chef in their dishes and it is my belief that Billy is very passionate about what he does. After seeing we had so much red wine left, I asked what chocolate desserts they offered. He named off a few and I thought it would be best to be surprised. He brought us, on the house, a lovely dessert of their featured chocolate torte and a couple truffles which were so decadent. We ended with some coffee and went out to enjoy the rest of our wine in the garden. It was such a lovely and most memorable experience. I can't thank Drew enough for all of his assistance with our decision making!!! I would highly advise others to visit this place. I know my husband and I plan to make it a yearly, if not more often, tradition. We also plan to stay in their B&B of which I hear equal reviews.

Couldn't be happier! Each room is unique and beautifully decorated, staff was friendly and professional, and our (included) breakfast was amazing!! Next time I'm in Ashland I'll be staying here again.

This is one of Ashland's best restaurants! We have been enjoying regular dining here this summer and it's been a great treat! The servers are all great (though Holly has gone above and beyond for us). She even was able to have the chef to make something special for me because of food allergies and a craving! The out door seating is amazing. We love sitting in the garden and the porch. The bonus is that they change their menu. We love having different entrees to choose between.

Fantastic food - we yelped some choices in Ashland on our trip through, and settled on this (tiny) wine bar as we had kids with us (8 and 10), liked the look of that menu, and didn't think the kids could put up with the full-fledged restaurant (but also didn't feel we had to go to yet another brewery). Great choice - the food, wine, and location were amazing. We had an heirloom tomato salad (terrific), the mini-beef wellingtons (yummy), frites with truffle aioli (although my youngest asked for ketchup to go with them - which a waiter happily provided), the antelope burger, green beans in panko - all quite yummy. The wine list was short, but the bar was extensive (although we stuck to wine), and someone had actually tasted all the wines, and they were all fantastic (at least the three we tried). A couple of complaints - the soup (smoked asparagus) was incredibly over-salted. To the point that the child who constantly salts her food said 'this is much too salty'. It was inedible. The service (we had children, it is true. Children who were quieter than the party next to us - who were boisterous, but well-behaved) was indifferent - no water glass refills, no plate clearing, no 'how was everything?'. Apparently, having decided to reproduce, teaching our children to eat at good restaurants, teaching them to try different foods, to eat in public, this is a sin, one for which we must be punished. Not for any genuine infractions, mind you, just for perceived ones, ie. bringing the kids with us. Don't get me wrong - I hate it when I'm having a lovely, romantic meal, and someone brings their kids to a restaurant where it is totally inappropriate to have them there. This was a wine bar, it was noisy, and our kids were the quietest ones there. So forgive me, but we only left 15% - if you wanted 20%, proprietor, my thought is, don't treat us like pariahs until we behave like them..... I would happily go back, to stay in the lovely rooms, and eat in the lovely restaurant and wine bar. No, I won't bring my kids. Not because they can't behave, but because this place can't cope with the possibility that they might be able to. Tell me, folks, did your parents keep you at ihops and Denny's until you were 21? How ever did you learn to behave in public?

Probably the best B&B experience we have ever had - we were in the Barbara Howard suite - great room, nice tub, excellent bed - super comfy, and all the extras - and a superb breakfast.

My wife and I stayed here for four nights on the beginning of a three week trip through Oregon and California. Our room with a balcony was small but really very nice. One reviewer complained that the balcony overlooks a parking lot; well, that's true, but you almost have to go out of your way to focus on it. The location was perfect; the food was fabulous; the grounds were beautiful and the service was impeccable - not to mention that we just loved Ashland.

Delightful outdoor seating. Remarkable wine list. Great service. We had the quail stuffed with wild boar and polenta and a bottle of the Philantropie Viognier. That turned out to be a very nice pairing. I recommend the Winchester Inn and Restaurant.
