Love when you can get outdoor seating. Good food and nice pours.

Location, location, location... and Martino's has it in spades. The lounge shares a brick pathway with Oregon Shakespeare Festival's Bowmer and the Elizabethan Theaters. So, it's a perfect place to dissect a performance and watch actors come in and unwind after an evening show. Martino's offers inside space and two different outdoor sections, and you can pick the venue to match your temperature desires and tolerance for cigarette smoke. Goodies from the full bar are dispensed quickly and efficiently, and the atmosphere is clean and friendly. One server, Amy, rates a star for herself. She remembers my drinks from the last time I was in town, and is able to single-handedly keep the entire floor well provided for. She's friendly and accurate, too! Martino's is the upstairs bar section of Macaroni Restaurant which Yelp lists separately (see yelp.com/biz/macaronis-a… ). Having them as two entries doesn't make too much sense, because the complete menu -- both food and drink -- is available on both floors. The food is very good, mostly upscale comfort food with the salmon pasta-like options that are required in upper-middle-class Ashland. You can get your choice of a very good Caesar salad, pasta with a sauce that they'll happily make spicy upon request, and chicken, beast, and fish. The food is not flawless, though, and about one in five times it disappoints. This week's disaster was eggplant Parmesan whose eggplant was raw, rubbery, and absolutely inedible. Too bad, too, since the breading and accompanying pasta and sauce were near perfect. Nevertheless, they are a fine place you want a quick or human-scale meal. We go to Martino's for drinks and post-play conversation a lot. They are unsurpassed in providing a great space for reliving the highs and lows of a production while cautiously keeping your voice down in case tonight's actor you're savaging to your friends happens to be standing behind your chair.

This is in regards to the lounge only. Classy atmosphere and courteous staff. I was expecting more from the top shelf but high end drinks can be a hard sell sometimes. Nobody like to see their investments collect dust. If you cats get a better selection of premier spirits I'll toss another star on.

Really great experience here! We looked at two different places for dinner when we went into Ashland for the Shakespeare Festival, and I'm glad we chose Martino's. As others have said, the location is wonderful! We sat on the front balcony and people watched while we ate. The service was superb-everyone was great and very prompt. In fact, our food came out TOO fast! We were still working on our apps when our main course came out. I would definitely try Martino's again, but I wish they had a little bit more of a selection.

I agree with Elissa D. This is a great place to get food and drinks before a show. We usually either go here or Tabu, sometimes both. The food is decent. I've never had an experience like the frozen chicken one described by another yelper. Mainly, I love this place for the booze and outdoor seating. As I've said many times before (and likely will again), I like few things better than sitting outside on a gorgeous, sunny day, drinking a nice cold booze-y drink with friends. Very close to heaven for me. So Martino's having an outdoor patio and full bar puts it farther up on my list. Give it a try before your play, I think you'll enjoy yourself.

I ate here last night (a Friday night), and it was absolutely fabulous! I had made a reservation out on the front patio. It was the prettiest view and first Friday was going on so there was music and people everywhere. I ordered a glass of Pinot noir and it was delicious and the food was even better! ( although it was a little pricey for me. $19.00 for a plate of pasta??) But the service was good and friendly. I would definitely go here again, but maybe only for special occasions because of how expensive all of the entrees were!

Upon browsing Ashland streets on my motorcycle, I parked and walked around a bit. Not having dined regularly in town since I moved back to Medford (from Portland), I wanted to see what had changed. Little did I know, a best-kept secret awaited... THE BEST CALZONE I have ever dropped in my stomach. Menu and pricing not overwhelming. I had so much fun when I ate here Sunday, May 25th, I came back the same week on Friday the 30th.

This is the place to be before or after your favorite shows in Ashland. Located conveniently right off the bricks next to the theatres, Martino's has a terrific selection of tasty food and beverages. There's seating out back on the patio, on the balcony overlooking the street in front, or inside. As a long-time Ashland icon, Martino's holds a loving place in my heart and I look forward to many, many more happy times here spent with good friends, good food, good theatre conversation and don't forget the wine.

Loved the back patio atmosphere! Romantic setting. The pasta was amazing. The man behind the bar, was polite and completed the Italian feel of the place!

The real claim to fame here is their close proximity to the 3 theaters of the Oregon Shakespeare Festival. In fact, you can enter directly from the bricked Green Space between the theaters, right by the OSF company store where all the souvenirs and Elizabethan-themed gifts are located. It's a combination restaurant called Macaroni's (?) and Martino's Lounge is the bar side. -- and they have outdoor seating as well in appropriate weather. And when you've tired of the weather outside, waiting for showtime, this is the place to stop in for a drink and a quick nibble (or, a whole pasta meal.) The crusty Italian bread was great. The pasta dishes are respectible -- nobody here is trying to win awards for originality -- but there is enough al dente and excellent sauce to tell you whoever is in the kitchen knows their way around the garlic press. The real pleasure, however is the bar. Besides being sparkly and beautiful in that "Mad Men" kind of '50s retro way, the vivid wine selection will give you plenty of choices to dress up your fettucini -- and the drinks are adequately strong. The chairs are just plain uncomfortable -- which is fixable -- but still.... And it's a little over-priced for what you get -- I suspect that is a result of their location.

As an actor, I love being around my kind and fangirling after watching amazing theatre. Naturally Martinos is where all the actors hang to destress. Who doesn't want to share a tipple with King Lear, or take shots with the chorus of My Fair Lady?! I tried the Marionberry cocktail which was pretty good. Apparently, Marionberry is native to Oregon, so you know me, whilst in OR... Prices are about the same anywhere else in the area and the food is really good. In the week I was here we also came upon a wedding party post wedding. Not gonna lie, everytime I'm here and sit at one of the long tables, I have "La Vie Boheme" going in my head. So for all you rent heads, order your WINE & BEER & boogy wonderland

I met a friend earlier this evening for drinks and since I hadn't tried Martino's, I thought I'd give it a go. My friend works in the theater scene in town and recommended it. After a walk up the steps of the building I reached the entrance of the restaurant. It was softly lit, with jazzy music contributing to the ambience. I was immediately greeted and seated, followed by prompt service. I ordered a half bottle of the Moscato d'Asti and sipped while talking with my friend. The server was very cordial and didn't pressure me into ordering anything. I enjoyed my wine and good company in complete relaxation. I did end up ordering some tiramisu to complement my wine. It was positively delicious. Next time I'll have to try the macaroni and cheese that I saw on the menu. The server mentioned it being her favorite menu item.

Food was great, I got pizza and it was delicious. The waitress wasn't so friendly, she was very sassy (not the good way). We ate in the balcony, there were ants and flies all over. If there is a next time I'll be sitting inside!

Great food excellent service. I had the blue cheese and prociutto pizza which was spectacular. The crust had a unique crunch to it and the cheese knocked me off my feet. I liked that the pizzas were of reasonable size and not gigantic. The service was friendly and efficient. The indoor decor was nice but a bit old school. My main complaint was that it was completely frigid inside. I understand that Ashland can get hot in the summer but the air conditioning was out of control. I was very uncomfortable the whole time. This is one of those places where you have to bring a jacket when it's 90 out.

We came to Ashland on the tail end of the 4th of July weekend. From Main Street, we climbed up a flight of stairs to the 2nd floor. We did not have a reservation. Our hostess gave us a table inside. All waitresses and hostess have a very pretty simple look. Not sure what but interesting. Our bread arrived warm with butter on the side. I had spaghetti with sausage and a coke. My meal included a vegie soup and that was delicious. My spaghetti was al dente. My spaghetti sauce was very tomato-licious. As for the sausages, I ate both of them. This is the bar area of the restaurant. The inside is dark and cool. We had a nice view of the tv and the bartender. He was busy making drinks. There is only one lady's room and one guy's room. So don't wait til you're desperate to hit the restroom. Next time, we will ask for the back patio sitting area.

The food and drinks were great as well as the atmosphere. Prices are reasonable and the service was spectacular. Bartender was a sweet heart and even drew us a map of where to go in ashland for drinks and/or dancing. I would love to come here again.

This is a "locals" joint and that's just how we'd like it to stay. It's really dimly lit inside which makes for a great atmosphere. The food is not the best (very hit or miss) but it ain't too shabby when it hits; still, it's a perfect spot to have a glass of wine. The decor definitely has a dated 70s lounge "Regal Beagle" feel going on. Kind of hilarious actually. I do love their macaroni and cheese- it's to die for. I also love the fresh bread they put out-- kind of a lost restaurant tradition these days but it's a nice touch especially since the bread is pretty fabulous. My friend and I had their special cream of cauliflower soup with white truffle oil and it was seriously good stuff. I nearly licked the bowl it was so rockin'. Anyway, this wouldn't be my first choice for dinner in Ashland, but if you are looking for a nice, dark bar scene, this is the place. You can get a decent pour at a fair price plus there's a nice beer garden in summer.

Pleasant atmosphere, but worst tiramisu ever. Still partially frozen! Jazz group was not very good either. No reason to return.

Ravioli and Pasta was undercooked, rushed service, obviously not fresh made ravioli. Sauce was the only redeming value of the meal. But then again, How hard is it to make a cream sauce or pesto cream sauce? They could do a lot better and I would not recomend this restaurant to anyone who appreciates fresh food.

Food ok. Ambience pretty good. Service good and bad. Our waitress ignored us for ten minutes, I had to ask for bread, and then she was apologetic and didn't bring it. We eventually asked another passing waiter and he took care of us really well.

That's 2.51. The four of us had dinner here last night, based on Nina's and my terrific spinach salads this summer. This time we ate inside. It was crowded and we were glad we had made reservations. It's convenient to the theatre, which is one of the other reasons we chose it. The bread was pretty good, a bit soft but w/ a nice crust. It came w/ butter and olive oil and vinegar were available in cruets on the table. Alan ordered the seafood pasta w/ the garlic and wine sauce, Nina ordered cioppino, Larry ordered lasagna and I ordered eggplant Parmesan. Alan and I agreed to split our dishes. All mains come w/ a choice of soup or salad. Alan opted for the minestrone but sent it back as it was too sharp. He, Larry and I had the Caesar, which is the same as the Caesar downstairs at Macaroni Restaurante, which we've had several times over the years and liked. Nina had the insalata mista. Servings were huge and the salads were good. Nina found the cioppino flavorful but thin. My eggplant was undercooked and tough though the sauce and cheese were tasty. The pasta on the side was good. The seafood pasta tasted good and was full of seafood and sugar peas, an incongruous albeit pleasant component. One or more of the dishes was high in salt. I had trouble removing my ring before going to bed. I had a grapefruit kamikaze and it was delicious and reasonably priced. I don't think we'll have dinner here again, though.

Great location, right by the theaters for the Shakespeare festival. Pretty nice lounge/bar atmosphere and good service. My partner really liked the food...he had the Straw N' Hay and they were nice enough to substitute white wine lemon sauce for cream sauce. I thought the food was just OK. The vegetarian choices were boring. I had angel hair pasta with fresh but not very good tomatoes swimming in a lemony sauce. We were served a large basket of OK-not-great bread right away, and soup or salad came with our meals. I had a salad that was decent but not very interesting and my partner had minestrone which he liked but I thought was, guess what, boring.

This was a major disappointment! The appetizer was good and the drinks weren't bad. But our main dishes came out cold. When you got to the bottom of the clams and linguine they were a little warm but my seafood in a butter garlic sauce were cold all the way through.

Neo-classic Italian restaurant downstairs, trendy Shakespeare-out-the-back-door bar upstairs, Macaronis / Martino's pleases locals and tourists alike. Reasonably priced by Ashland standards (and a-typically inclusive of caesar salad or minestrone with your entree), you can dine here on traditional fare (Chicken Parmesan, Linguini with Calms, Fettuccini Primavera) as well as the unexpected: Oregon Smoked Salmon Ravioli, or Pollo Alla Martino (a char-grilled lemon and sage chicken breast with grilled shrooms - mmmmmm!). We often make a lighter weeknight supper out of an assortment of their antipasti (the Warm Spinach Salad is lovely, as is the Scampi con Lemon) or even just the Crostini Misti - four generous slices of toasted Italian bread each with it's own different broiled topping - with a salad or a cup of soup on the side. Add a glass of Montepulciano and call it a night in the neighborhood of $20, tip included. There's also a nice selection of Pizza's and Calazone to choose from ... and by all means you should at least once indulge in their famous Macaroni and Cheese. You'll be able to actually hear your arteries slamming shut, but it'll be totally worth it.

I usually order their nightly fish specials and Paul's fav is the lasagne bolognese. Tonight's fish was salmon with figs, polenta, caramelized onions and roasted vegetables. Dinners include minestrone soup or Caesar salad or baby green salad. Green salad was large and fresh. Bread basket had thick slices of white and dark wheat yummy bread. Service was very efficient and all food arrived prompt and hot. Ambience was soft, quiet although the restaurant was full, and relaxed.

I love the food here. It's always tasty and filling, and the servings are large enough that I can get two-three meals out of it. What's to complain about?

I love this place whenever I'm in town for a play at the Shakespeare Fest. This place has the BEST MINESTRONE I've ever tasted, with some crusty french bread its the perfect lunch or dinner.

I came here last night for dinner with a friend before going to Othello. On the plus side, we were seated rather quickly, our waitress was friendly, and we could hear each other (which seems to be an increasingly difficult thing to find at restaurants/bars these days). Our meals were served quickly, which was great since we didn't want to rush before the play. I had a yummy martini, but I didn't think it was that strong. For dinner, I had spaghetti with the zesty meat sauce. I'm not sure what the chef's definition of zesty is, but mine was certainly not zesty. It tasted almost bland. Great location, nice ambiance, decent service. There's potential here--but I wouldn't go out of my way to try it again.

The best Italian restaurant I've eaten at in Southern Oregon. I would chose this restaurant over Olive Garden any day. The food is delicious and the service is fast and friendly!!!!

This place has a special place in my heart. I worked at OSF in 2008 and this place--affectionately called "routine-o's" because we just ALWAYS went here (it's steps from the theatre, for the love of God)--was like home #3 (after home, and the theater or rehearsal hall...). Good drinks, nice selection of wines, especially local. AMY is a GODDESS. The food is actually quite good, too. I wish that smoking was NEVER allowed inside though...If I remember right, you can smoke upstairs until 9...not my fave...

  • Kris W.

Good food, but it's pricey. It's also right across from the Bowmer theatre, so the location is part of what you're paying for. No complaints from anyone in my group of four; my favorite was the bruschetta app, which was quite good. Service was unobtrusive and fairly speedy. Nothing amazing, but for a quieter place to relax and dine with friends, this isn't a bad spot, and prices are in line with other options in the same block.

This is a great old stand-by. The food is always pretty good, the service is fine, the atmosphere is OK. It's a super convenient spot to have dinner before a play. We usually eat here at least once while we're in Ashland.

I ate here several years ago, and the experience has stayed with me. My chicken was completely raw inside. Sick. When I politely returned it, the server offered to "put it back in the oven," and she seemed put off that I had a problem with frozen chicken.

  • Amy L.

The food here is okay, nothing extraordinary. 2 stars instead of 3 because the staff got a little antsy and anxious when our students (all black, one Latino) came in. They all moved from the back room into the front room where we were. They were also kind of pushy about clearing plates from our table. They weren't busy but kept trying to rush our meal.

    (2)
  • Andy P.

This place hooks lots of diners with its location, but that must be the only reason. It's not the service or the food. Pretty inconsistent italian with nothing special to recommend.

    (1)
  • Elissa D.

Best place to hang out directly before or after your show. Get a glass of Petit Pompodor (local winery, good stuff) a plate of antipasta, some bread & olive oil and watch all the crazy actor types walk in. Dinner not so great, but ask for Amy, greatest waitress of all time.

Italian Cuisine

The immense popularity of Italian cuisine globally isn't unknown. You can find an Italian Pizzeria around every corner of almost every city in the United States. Not to forget that in every house, people enjoy mac and cheese as comfort food. But it would be wrong to believe that Italian food starts with pizza and ends with good pasta as this Mediterranean country has much more to offer other than these two dishes. In Italian Cuisine, there is a high use of fresh tomatoes, all kinds of herbs, great quality of cheese, all types of meat, seafood and fresh handmade pasta. Many find it hard to believe that Italians have been making noodles long back.

Italian and Greek cuisines are always mistaken to be same, but they are poles apart. The primary difference between the two cuisines is the use of cheese in most of the Italian dishes. Italians love to cultivate their own cheese and process them as per their food requirement. It is believed that some cheese is so expensive that cheese producers secure them in lockers.

If you are bored eating the same old pasta or pizza, you can try some of the authentic Italian dishes like Risotto, Polenta, Ribollita, Lasagna, Fiorentina Steak, Bottarga, Ossobuco, Carbonara, Focaccia, Arancini and Supplì. Another item which Italians love to relish every morning is a good cup of Italian Coffee. Once you taste a freshly brewed cup of Italian Coffee, you might not visit Starbucks ever again. Authentic Italian food is made with heart and soul, so go find a restaurant where you can relish Italian cuisine in your city.
