Don't expect a Portland grade diner. Don't expect a 5 star restaurant. This kozy kitchen is owned by a sweet woman named Deb (no kidding?) who makes just about everything by scratch. Sometimes the service isn't great but keep in mind that the wait staff are typically high school students in their first job. When you get your country food ordered, take a peek around and look at the display in the middle of the main dining room which showcases local matters. The diner itself has had some different owners over time but the overall look of the structure inside and out hasn't changed in at least 20 years. It's a part of Alsea (Al (a man's name) - sea (body of water) ) history.

AWFUL. We stopped in for burgers on our way back from camping in Waldport. First, we went outside to find a seat and there were dirty dishes scattered about, so we had to clear a space to sit. Once we were finally seated, our menfolk asked what beers they have on hand and the snarky waitress snapped back with "I'm too young, I cannot talk about beer with you. You'll have to go inside and ask the chef about it". Then, we noticed our seemed dog she was getting lonely in the (shaded) car out front, so we decided to grab her and tie her up under our table. She was fine. She just laid down and took a little nap by her people....at least she did until the manager came storming out saying we cannot have the dogs on the deck and we need to remove them now. Are you kidding me? We're from Portland, so this is extremely odd to us, but we obliged because she muttered something about their insurance as she walked away - whatever. Then, I ordered a side salad with my mushroom and Swiss burger. She asked what type of dressing I wanted, I said a balsamic vinaigrette, she looked extremely confused and then said "okay, I can see". Then brought me a side salad with mushy green peas, beets, and other assorted veggies and straight balsamic vinegar..... Seriously? Then, once we all received our food, my burger didn't have mushrooms, all the burgers were DRIPPING with grease, and THERE WAS A HAIR IN MY BURGER. Plus, the fries were limp and soggy. The tots were pretty tasty, but that's not saying much as I assume they're not handmade in house. Also, we had to ask for water refills and napkins because the waitress was oblivious. Needless to say, we're going to drive a little further for any other option next time we're in the area.

We stop here once or twice a month on our way to Corvallis. No complaints until our last visit on 7/18/15. It was 45 minutes from the time we sat down until we received our food. My over easy egg yolks were broke, my wife's medium hard eggs were over easy, the hash browns under cooked, and my grand-daughters pigs in an blankets, under cooked. The waitress pretty much ignored us. Add that a local came in about 10 minutes after us and had his food about 15 minutes ahead of us just drops this place to the bottom of the list. They did offer to re-cook our food, but we were not interested in waiting what? another 45 mintues. We will think twice before stopping here again.

My sister and I stopped in at Deb's last week and we're so glad we did. Excellent quality, home cooked food. We enjoyed the freshness of the bread and veggies on our sandwiches. The pies are homemade and SO good! Don't miss this place.

We are from out of town and have been working down the road from Deb's for about a week. We come here every night after work to get a good home cooked meal. Very small town feel to the restaurant with Deb greeting everyone who comes in by name and chatting with them in between cooking up great meals. I always get the fettucini with home cooked rolls. The pasta is well cooked and the sauce is made from scratch for each batch. Her rolls are insanely good. I tried the milkshakes, and if you don't mind gaining 10 pounds, they're delicious. The pies are great too. My dad usually gets the healthier options like lean beef patties and steaks...also very good. Clam chowder on Friday's is pretty awesome too. Overall no complaints whatsoever. For a small town restaurant (the only one in town I think) it's great. Dunno what the other reviewer here is talking about...the food we've have gotten the past 5 nights here has been great in every way. I'd be a bit on the negative side too if I lived in Alsea and only had one restaurant to choose from though.

This place has improved a ton since my last review. Every time I go to Deb's I always get a cheeseburger and fries, and other than being overpriced, there is nothing wrong with the burger. It is WAY delicious. And you can tell the fries aren't those nasty frozen things, you can tell they made them themselves. They're crispy and salty and greasy and perfect. Another thing about Deb's is the PIES. You have to try some if you stop by!

stopped here, and very glad we did! we were headed towards waldport to fly fish the alsea river and needed a good breakfast to start the trip. deb's cafe was more than we had hoped for, after seeing very bleak options since we had left portland. went in and ordered deb's chicken fried chicken and a plate of biscuits and gravy and a couple coffees, and left full and satisfied. best customer service, not too over the top, yet not too inattentive. the orange cream slice of pie i got to go was amazing as well!

Make it a destination! We stopped here while passing through Alsea (why is it listed here as being in "Southwest Benton"?) on our way to the coast. We were expecting a greasy spoon but found a charming little cafe. Deb herself served us, and did the cooking; it was busy so lunch was a little delayed, but not nearly as long as I would have expected for a woman who managed to cheerfully greet, seat, serve, and cook for several tables all at once. We relaxed and waited for our lunch while enjoying the homemade split pea soup. Lunch proper was a meatloaf sandwich and chicken Caesar salad, both of which were far better than one usually finds. We were too full for dessert, which was truly a shame, as the pie case held several inviting items. I asked Deb if she made everything herself and she replied in the affirmative. Personally I get very happy when I see an unphotogenic pie in a restaurant case; it means the pie wasn't constructed in a factory somewhere and shipped frozen. "That one got cut before it set up right" she said, indicating a mandarin-orange cream pie she said she'd thought of at 2:30 AM one recent night. I have been fantasizing about that messy, oozy deliciousness ever since. There was also a banana cream pie, some fruit pies and some small things she called mock-pecan hillbillies. As we left we asked about the pies and she informed us she bakes up to 35 pies a week in the summertime. Holy crap, now I am obsessed with pie. We'll be going out of our way to visit Deb's again!
