The chips were awesome and the service great!!! No hot salsa, which was a bit confusing. I had the Chile Verde Burrito and it was very tasty. Overall a pleasant experience but nothing to write home about.

I wish I would have taken others' reviews and ratings more seriously. It was with in walking distance from our hotel and they suggested it. Should have been the first indicator. It was terrible. We waited for over an hour for a 3 top, the bartenders were complete assholes! Sat at the bar for a short time and wasn't asked if we wanted anything. We had to ask and when we asked about special or house drinks it was like we were an inconvenience. If it wasn't a chaotic mess I would have asked for the manager, but I couldn't get out fast enough. Margaritas were decent. Food was below average. Bartenders are D-Bags. PS - the blue hair isn't a good look for you.

What nobody has mentioned- and nowhere on the web could I find- is the fact that the Tuesday night $1 tacos are pork. What if you don't like pork tacos? I am sorry that I wasted my time here. Guess I had better scrutinize 'specials' in the future.

I like going to a Mexican restaurant with good salsa! This place has that... although sometime you get some stale chips, but just ask for some fresh ones. I like their pulled pork tacos as well. It has a great flavor especially if you like spicy. If you go on Tuesday.. it's sooo cheap! The atmosphere is great, but it can get a little bit too crowded sometime. I have yet to eat up in the rooftop seating area, but it's a great option when the weather permits.

We have a new favorite Mexican restaurant in Tulsa! My husband loves the salsa (a little light on traditional flavor for me) but we both love the smoked chicken enchiladas and the steak tacos. We were there on a Friday night right next to a window on the second floor and caught a great fireworks show!

  • Brian M.

Wish I could tell you how the food was, but I can't. I can't even tell you about the chips and salsa. I went in on a not so busy night and ask where I should sit. "Anywhere!" was the enthusiastic answer, so I did. After waiting 10 minutes without being acknowledged... I left.

Clean surroundings, very friendly efficient and attentive staff. Lunch portion Fajita salad chicken tasty, chicken, onions and green pepper warm almost cool. Chips and salsa fresh. Side order of guacamole expensive $5.99. And of course Pepsi.

Sorry folks but this may be the worst restaurant in Tulsa. I love Elliot Nelson's other establishments but not this one. The food is so bland, no taste at all. Everyone harps abouts the margaritas, ya if you like sweet and sour based slop. Even the chips and salsa leave a bad after taste. What could make this review worse? The terrible service. Awful. With all the great Mexican restaurants in Tulsa why in the hell would you eat at El Guapos? Sorry, the roof view isn't enough of a reason.

  • Andrew W.

I lively, colorful place with three floors of seating and a good vibe. I got to sit at the top in the open with a margarita and some tacos which is always fun. The staff at the bar was having a good time, as were most of the patrons. I kind of wished the tacos and margaritas were better. Not bad, but so, so. And some of the staff seemed more preoccupied with each other than the patrons. Still, I would come back and check this out for lunch or maybe with a big group.

El Guapo's confuses me. The things they do right, they really nail it. The things they do wrong, they do REALLY wrong. I've never had average service here. It's been either amazing or horrible. On a good night, our waitress was knowledgeable and just super fun. On a bad night, our waiter basically completely ignored us. We had to keep asking other passing servers where he was or if they could help us, which made us feel like a pain the ass, though they were nice about it. El Guapo's salsa is my favorite in all of Tulsa. It's fantastic. I'm pretty fond of the fish tacos too--grilled mahi mahi, fresh slaw, good sauce. Everything else I've had to eat here was bland and unimpressive. Drinks are awesome here, though. The specialty margaritas are perfect. Ultimately this is the kind of place I like to come on a day with nice weather so I can sit on the rooftop with friends, eat some chips and salsa, and drink a margarita, maybe share a dessert. It's not the kind of place I would come for a great dining experience, but for a girls night out it's a decent stop.

A neat 3 level place, fun décor and a roof top patio downtown. Great combination. If only the food was equal. (3 trips) This is another spot by Elliot Nelson and he has done a great job at The Tavern, Yokozono, Dilly Deli, and Fassler Hall. I don't understand why this place comes up so short. The food is not nasty, just bland and nothing to get excited about. Actually I have had tv dinners with more taste. Salsa is good and Tuesday tacos for $1 are a good buy ---- especially with a couple of margaritas. Should be one star but gving two stars because it is a local place but I would not return to for the food

This place came highly recommended by a local we met and it did not disappoint. While rambling through Tulsa, we stopped by for lunch. Scott greeted us and grabbed a few beers to help counter the 106 degree heat just outside the walls. The chips and salsa are amazing. You come to expect them free at every Mexican restaurant, but this salsa was on a higher level. We both ordered the Chicken Poblano Mole Enchiladas. They arrived quick and hot with a side of rice and beans. Their homemade mole is out of this world. So much flavor, and a great level of heat. The whole dish was out together so well. Great choice. Everyone was kind, even the patrons. While watching a heated Olympic competition, we asked what else there was to do in town, to which everyone answered "get drunk". The response was dead-on. Thanks for a great visit.

What pains me about EL Guapo's is how good it could be. I have visited this restaurant three times. Each time I received three different experiences. My first experience was on a busy night. Even though I did not receive table service I was greet ed friendly at bar and even was comped an appetizer for my troubles. My second time was a wonderful time. Lush guacamole fresh tomatoes and great margaritas. Now the last I couldn't belive I was at the same reasturant. I order a Chicken Caesar salad and it was the driest thing I have eve had. How do you mess up the simplest menu item? El Guapo's are like the L.A. Clippers.. you see the potential for greatness but it never shows up when it counts

  • Brandon V.

We loved it here. The parking stinks, but the food and service were awesome. Get the chicken tortilla soup at least once. Best I've had. They're house salsa is really good, but for an extra appetizer try the Tony Collins Dip. Good stuff!

Bar review: I had a prickly pear margarita. It was delicious. They offered us complimentary chips and salsa and they were good. They have a neat patio and it is located in the hippest part of Tulsa.

El Guapo was a fun experience. We sat on the rooftop and it had a decent view of the city. They have very unique Margarita choices and it is a tequila lovers Paradise!

  • Tyler S.

The food was pretty good. I agree with most of the other reviews that the rooftop patio, margaritas, and the salsa were my favorite part. I had the green chili verde wet burrito and the pork was a little bland. I would try something different if I come back again.

    (3)
  • Katherine G.

LOVE their margarita! Strawberry was my favorite but they are fresh and tasty. The food is so so (Nothing special) but eating on the roof top makes up for that. Nice place for a drink and good company.

Ghastly, battling with Qdoba for worst mexican joint in Tulsa. oddly, it's one of the few places i have seen north of the red river that has "torta" on the menu. To me this usually means something like a french roll with shredded beef, beans tomatoes, avocado and peppers on it. what came out was a dried, burned abomination i tried but couldn't eat. This place is one block from where i work so i end up having to go here with coworkers every so often. food is always non-mexican and terrible. If you have to eat here get nachos or something. Hopefully you won't be put off by the apathetic hipster waitperson you get with all the s*^t in his/her face (hey man... that's trudy.... she's my wife).

  • Mike D.

Best mexican food in downtown/blue-dome Tulsa. Skip the flat breaded chicken dish. They say it's one of their specialties, but...no. And skip the tamales. Chili rellenos are particularly good, and enchiladas are good.

  • James A.

Sitting on the top floor patio of this place on a Friday night is pretty great. They have an amazing view of downtown Tulsa, and a friendly staff with great drink prices. Show up early because I can bet this place gets packed by 9:30 on a weekend. I haven't tried the food but my friends seemed to enjoy what they ordered. It looked good from where I was sitting. I recently moved back home from Texas, and this place has just as much character and good times as any place downtown Dallas, but without the 40 minute drive and $10 valet parking. Highly recommended.

My husband and I visited recently after a show. A surly hostess threw our menus down on a table against a wall where we could barely fit. I asked her for another table and was curtly told basically no, we would be using up valuable space. When a server came to take our drink order she graciously allowed us to move where we could breathe. Evidently that put a hex on us because no one would serve us, forever!!! We finally flagged a server down, ordered, and had our meal. The food was fairly good, but I don't care to be treated like a pain in the rear, and not a customer with at least some value.

  • Chrissy L.

An hour wait on a Friday night with numerous open tables on the roof? It perplexed me how this was so but we grabbed some chips & waited it out. We ordered some margs to start the evening and I found out on KEY bit of info from the bar tender- the reason why the margs are sickly sweet here is because they use limeade. Limeade in your margarita! When we asked if the bar tender could make it a little less sweet, she offered to put WATER in it. Because a watered down sickly sweet marg is better than a sickly sweet marg? The food itself was good- between fish tacos, enchiladas & carnitas, everything I tried was really good. If you have some time to kill- the atmosphere here is pretty cool. If you want friendly service and an authentic drink, you might try elsewhere.

Any "X-Files" fans out there? If so, do you remember the episode where the vermin (roaches) were eating people? Okay. Now, do you remember how Chris Carter had the illusionary roach crawl across the TV screen? It. Was. Awesome! Now, for a choppy segue... Roaches, however, (dead or alive) are not cool when it comes to eatery's. It is especially not cool when they are evident at supposedly "clean, wholesome" restaurants. First, the food at El Guapo's is typical Tex-Mex, neither great or bad. It just "is." To put it even more simply, it serves the same bland crap that El Chico's and a myriad of other chains serve. But, this review has a larger point that I want to make. The Boss blanches when I suggest some of my more authentic establishments for lunch or dinner. The common refrain is that they are so "run down, shabby," or my favorite, "it is not the most clean place." Thus, I found myself recently suffering through a mediocre meal at El Guapo's. But all was not lost my friends! All was not lost... I must admit that I did so with glee as I pointed out the roach crawling up the wall behind the Bosses head. And, when I offered to kill it, I pointed out that it would only be joining the other two already dead under our table! So look at it this way, at those "shabby" restaurants that I like to frequent, I have never seen a roach, but I have seen mismatched chairs! Just remember, the outside facade may not be the best, but more often than not, the owners are working hard to be clean and serve great food. On-the-other-hand, I worry more about the theme restaurant or chain that has no other concern more than how long to heat your entree in the microwave.

We had a large group of 9 with no reservations on a Friday night, but were able to secure a table on the roof within 10 minutes of our arrival (in 102 degree weather!). It was HOT, but beat having to wait 2 hours for a table inside. Service was very friendly, as was parking. I had a couple of cold beers, at least 2 baskets of chips & salsa (SO ADDICTING) and their mahi mahi fish tacos, which were spectacular.

Yes, I have to agree that "meh" is my usual feeling after leaving El Guapo, which is sad because I really want to like this place. Great location, decor, rooftop seating - but the food is plain bland. Many dishes sound creative and interesting but the taste is missing. I've tried Chili Verde, Chilaquiles con Pollo, enchiladas, queso and tamales. One thing our group did enjoy on our last visit was the Tacos El Guapo with carnitas (pork). Carne asada was not good. I also like the creamy Avocado Verde Salsa with chips. I still think El Guapo is generally a good place to hang out and maybe have a margarita on the roof, and they threw a good Cinco de Mayo party on the street outside their front door with Hosty Duo. But don't go there for great food.

Loved the chicken enchiladas with mole sauce. At first taste it's sweet, then smoky and finishes spicy.

Roaches and bad food. If the roach falling from the ceiling into my shirt wasn't bad enough, the food sucked. The meal was provided free due to roach. This happened a couple years ago, they may have improved since then. I will not return to El Guapo's, due to the food.

In town for work, and I heard about El Guapo's on Foursquare. Ordered lunch to go this afternoon. The atmosphere, what little of it I experienced while waiting for my order, was super cool. Great decor! The food (I ordered El Tacos de Guapo with Carnitas as my meat of choice) was great! The beans and rice are just that, beans and rice, nothing special. But I would definitely eat there again. :)

  • Kelly J.

The food is good for generic Tex-Mex. I went with some friends because it was a beautiful day and we wanted to sit outside. We sat on the roofdeck and enjoyed their chips and salsa. We ordered their Margarita Ponche de Fruta in different flavors and they were all good, but I recommend the pomegranate. We started with the Cantina Queso which I loved. I ordered the Wet Burrito with carne asada after reading other reviews, and I would order it again. The food is good enough to make me return, but it was more about the roofdeck, the company, and the cocktails.

Fantastic! Great chips, salsa, guacamole, and awesome queso dip. Food was fantastic. Unique atmosphere. Why does this only have 3 stars?! 5/5!!

  • Mark R.

Ate here tonight while visiting Tulsa. I didn't think I could find good Tex-Mex this far north of the Red River, but this place was great. The salsa was full of flavor with a touch of kick, the Queso was flavorful and had a good consistency, and the entree was fantastic. I had the smoked steak and cheese flautas. The steak was tender as well seasoned and the cheese was hot and gooey. 2 flautas cut in half (4 pieces total) served in a bowl with queso, sour cream, and pico de gallo. This meal really hit the spot and the price is right. Throw in a friendly staff and cool decor and you've got a great spot for great food in downtown Tulsa.

Rooftop bar is amazing. Best when you can watch a summer storm rolling in from the west while BOK and Williams tower stand guard over Tulsa.

  • Asa K.

my preference for mexican food is authentic, this is straight up tex mex. The only time I would tell someone to come here is on Tuesday for dollar street tacos. If those were the only thing on the menu I would give them 4 stars. But, the other food is pretty generic and the staff arent the greatest. The seating on the roof is pretty awesome though.

  • Rebecca F.

I've eaten here three times, and every time I leave disappointed. One time I went to LJS (Long John Silver) on my way home. That's another story, but I was obviously still hungry. The last time I went- everyone at the table had food they labeled "gross," which was embarrassing because I made the reservations for my friend from out of town's birthday party. They were nice about it, but now they think I'm gross too, and that sucks. The two positives? Fast service, always. But the best thing here: the 42 ounce margarita. It says, "Go ahead, get sloppy tonight." And I like that.

Meh. I mean, that's what I thought when I left today. Oh, and I thought about the gagillions of calories I just consumed. But, I'm totally serious here, it's just so-so. It's hard to pinpoint what the problem is to me here, but I guess I am looking for a little more creativity. Maybe that's asking too much. Okay, just give me a little more quality then. My dining partner order the El Guapo tacos with chicken and they looked so sad when they came out. The plate had nothing exciting about it...no sour cream or crema drizzles. It's as though they were put together on the assembly line. Sad and dreary plate of tacos. I ordered the two choices lunch portion. I went with smoked chicken enchiladas, cheese and onion enchilada with white queso on top. The plate also came with rice and charro beans. My enchiladas were sad looking too, but I was hungry and ignored the dried queso covering the top. Did my plate sit under a lamp for like 30 minutes??? I will say that the margarita was yummy. I don't like margaritas with sour mix. They make me gag! But, their margs have a limeade base with silver tequila and triple sec. 16 oz...6 bucks. Woohoo to that! I mean, if it's a late night and you want something that will stick to your ribs, go for it - I just wish they would give their dishes a little more pizazz...presentation is everything!

Despite my Tulsa hosts insisting that this is traditional Mexican fare, and other posters help on Yelp suggesting the same, El Guapo's is really more Tex-Mex than Mex-Mex ... just maybe less Tex-Mex than other Tulsa area eateries. They definitely earn an A for ambiance and their outdoor patio, and the food is decent. I tried their house special chili verde burritop, which was ok. Combined with the sauces and creams and other parts of the burrito, it was a good meal, although I probably wouldn't have liked if it were just a chili verde plate. The combo meals my hosts ordered looked just fine.

  • J D.

Great location, the place inside is just OK. But the food stinks!! we ordered the shrimp for $12 and it was 6 skinny and cold shrimps on a watered down guacamole liquidy awful mix. Oh and my margarita had no alcohol on it, I guess they forgot about it and just brought me some sugar lime water. I would never go back.

I was hankering for some good 'ol fashioned Mexican food, and this place did the job pretty well. In the gaudy setting with a pletorha of colors, I satiated my long desire for queso. We got the Tom Collins queso with lots of goodies like chili and beans included. My friend said that the only worthwhile thing to get here was the wet burrito (doesn't that sound lovely?) and I shared it with my other friend and that was just about right. Please take note, of course, that it was two girls who barely managed to finish one! The service was decent and the chips and salsa to start you off are pretty hot (temperature, and spice wise). So! Food? Good. Service, good. Decor? Umm. Overall? A-OK.

  • Heather H.

I have been here three times and I have always really liked it. The food is always good and always looks good to me. I certainly wouldn't compare it to Chimi's that place is a disgrace to all mexican restaurants! The one bad thing is that service here isn't good. It's either overkill and annoying or no service at all.

    (4)
  • Naomi T.

One of our favorite places to go in Tulsa! I often crave their veggie wet burritos which are made with fajita veggies, beans and rice and covered in white queso. YUM. Their chips and salsa are so good that I have to stop myself from eating too many because they are oily like most tortilla chips.

    (4)
  • Beau R.

3 stars for the food. 4 stars for the atmosphere. There are like 3 or 4 levels on this place and you can sit at the bar on the roof and there are a bunch of tables up there. Good place to go in downtown to hang out with friends or for a party. Great Bar.

    (4)
  • GlobeTrotter M.

Overall just a bad experience. Sat on the roof top, but that's about the only thing good about this place. It is overpriced and the help here was very arrogant and impatient. This place wasn't even busy and never got my drink refilled, had to wait around on my check, didn't get the chips replaced, etc. Just the typical stuff you'd expect from a place with bad service, I'm sure it's happened to everyone at some point. I kinda figured in Tulsa you'd get awesome Mexican food, this is part of why I went. But that's not the case. Hate to give a place such a low rating but I won't be back, neither will a lot of my coworkers.

    (1)
  • Ashley A.

El Guapo's has a great outdoor patio and is a good place to go when it comes to meeting up with friends for drinks and appetizers (the queso and tortilla soup are passable) in a fun atmosphere. The bar is great and the service is quick, but if you're hungry for an actual meal of good Mexican food, head elsewhere.

    (3)
  • Kevin H.

I can only give this place 3 stars because they do make a pretty good margarita and the patio on the roof is fun. But as far as the food is concerned, this place ranks up there with the likes of El Chico or Chimis. There is definitely WAY better and more authentic Mexican food to be found all over Tulsa.

    (3)
  • Tawny T.

The food here is awful, don't get me wrong, but the margaritas are great and pair well with unlimited chips and salsa on the rooftop in summer.

  • Justin B.

This is a fun place downtown to eat. The have the obligatory "Plethora of Pinatas", as noted by another reviewer, and the decor is entertaining. The tequila bar downstairs rocks. The bartendress (forgot her name) was very cool and more importantly allowed me to try drinks that she was making for other guests... (no, I didn't drink out of their glasses, there was some left in the shaker). Great service at the bar. Sitting outside on the roof with a view of the downtown buildings is also cool. I docked it a star for food taste. I am pretty spoiled when it comes to Mexican food and El Guapo's is pretty good but not a 5 out of 5 star place, as food goes. This isn't a reason to miss it tho, the food is good enough, the drinks are kick ass, and the environment is great.

    (4)
  • Rob R.

Hmm... probably a good place to get tequila or a margarita, but the Texas-sized food portions here are unremarkable. Tortillas are cold and stale, the fish tacos are dressed with essentially ranch dressing, and you shouldn't even count on the fish being mildly fresh. Not sure where to get better Mexican in Tulsa, but this doesn't compare to joints in heavily other heavily hispanic Midwestern cities like Chicago & Milwaukee.

    (2)
  • Crystal C.

Pros: $1 tacos and $4 margaritas. Cons: Minus a star for the extra long wait and the food. I had to wait 40+ minutes for a first available seat on a Tuesday evening (Taco Tuesday). I like the $1 tacos at their 81st and Harvard location better. Tacos at 81st and Harvard are better seasoned.

    (4)
  • Bill H.

If you order a full order of combination nachos, be prepared to pay almost $20. Don't get me wrong, it's okay and all, but not worth $20.

  • Richard K.

I read all the reviews for E.G. If you don't like Mexican food eat elsewhere and for the love of God, don't opine on food you fundamentally don't like... I love Mexican food and have had Mexican food just about everywhere in the world including Mexico. Hence my opinion is worth something. The space is attractive and allows for group conversation. Staff is exceptional, fast, efficient and accommodating. Hammil was terrific. My guacamole needed a bit more salt for my taste but was fresh and tasty. I ordered a combo plate, well executed and reasonable quantity of food. Margarita special was pretty good, but not perfection. Sopapillas where excellent. While I can't give them a five and I would like to offset the reviews from boobs who don't like ANY Mexican restaurants, I will not . That's sinking to their level of stupidity. So four it is. The less than four overall rating kept me away from this place initially, but I felt like giving them a chance and it turned out to be positive. Fix the margaritas guys and you will get a five.

  • Melly M.

4 stars for its decorations, I like the hanging pinata from the ceiling, decorations on the wall were cool looking. 3 stars for its food (I'm mostly biased, I am no fan of Mexican food :P) I got chicken tacos and they were good. Patio seating looked fun, but there was a long wait so we didn't do that. I don't think I'll go back again unlessed I'm forced to, only because I don't like Mexican food that much, sorry!

  • Gary M.

The Chile Verde Wet Burrito was cool. Not as good as my previous choices here. I liked the avocado verde salsa, even though I don't like avocado, you couldn't taste it at all. They give you plenty of slow roasted pork in every bite. I liked the white queso as well. I got a drink, the Margarita Ponche de Fruta. I was allowed to mix the fruits, so I mixed strawberry & pomegranate together. Very tasty. It's a big glass too. Also, try it frozen.

El Guapo's is one of our favorite 'go to' restaurants downtown. It's great for big groups, families, or with a few friends. The restaurant is in an older, three story building that has been adapted to its new use while still preserving a lot of the original character with high ceilings and exposed brick. Dining in is a unique experience just seeing as how cool the building is. I love the food at El Guapo's. I heard someone describe it as "Mexican food made by a person who wasn't from Mexico" but I think it's really great, probably my second favorite Mexican place in Tulsa (second to El Rancho Grande.) They have a pretty typical Tex Mex menu with tacos, giant burritos, enchiladas, etc. Our favorites include the street tacos and the wet burrito. I love their salsa and queso as well. The salsa seems to be heavy on the cilantro so if you're not a fan, it might not be you're favorite. I've heard people complain about the drinks being weak but I've always enjoyed the margaritas I've gotten there. They have a wide variety of magaritas and other mixed drinks, including the giant 60oz margarita which I've seen a few people attempt by themselves. There is usually a wait on Friday and Saturday nights but you can always get a drink from the bar while you're waiting. Additionally, they have a roof top patio which is fun when the weather is nice.

The female bartender must be having a bad day (life?). After repeating my questions about my order several times, she finally gave me the answer I was looking for after adding a detail she had left out at the beginning and middle of our conversation. The guy behind the bar with her must have trained her in customer service because he never said a word to me but ran around with my food in his hands then stood by while she attempted (poorly) to answer VERY simple questions. (I figured out right away her personality so I spoke calmly and slowly). Neither one of them was courteous or even thanked me for being there. No smiles but a lot of aggression from behind the bar. I seriously try to like this place but their service makes it very hard. 2 stars because the food was good and passably warm.

not really sure why el guapo's only has a 3-star rating and quite a few poor reviews. I go here often for lunch since I work downtown, and while I won't say that el guapo's is my favorite Mexican restaurant, I still think it's a goody. their chips and salsa are great. this is a big indicator of a Mexican restaurant in my humble opinion, and ya did good, el guapo's. also, their white queso is equally tasty. yummmm. I typically get their spinach enchiladas or their chicken fajita salad with honey mustard dressing. I would recommend both, as they're veryyy tasty. I will say that I'm not a big fan of their margaritas - they just have that store bought mix flavor. but that doesn't get me down.. the service has always been good for me - friendly & attentive waitstaff. my food always comes quickly. their patio = YES. you need to go. best patio downtown. how does overlooking the Tulsa skyline over drinks and appetizers sound - amazing, right? so go.

This review is for Taco Tuesdays where traditional carnitas tacos are $1 each. Yup, that's right. I feasted on complimentary chips and salsa and ordered 2 tacos and had a bill of 2 bones. I mean... I'd be losing money if I didn't go, right? Totally. The chips were warm when served and the salsa was mild but still packed in flavor. The tacos were excellent as the meat was tender and had killer toppings. They were served in 2 corn tortillas. I added some crumbled tortilla chips and salsa to bulk them up just a little more. I've dined on both El Guapo's rooftop and second level. The atmosphere is authentic and the service has always been outstanding. If you want to sit on the roof though, expect a little but of a wait on Taco Tuesdays! El Guapo, I think you're handsome.

El Guapo's is the only great rooftop bar/restaurant in Tulsa. Let's give credit where credit is due. But I'm just really not a huge fan of their food. When it comes to Mexican food in Tulsa, you can do way better. The meal always starts with chips and salsa. I can't eat the salsa at El Guapo's. I avoid it like the plague...It just makes my stomach hurt, the taste lingers with you for hours and hours, and it's really unappealing to my highhhlllllyyyy refined palate. Service is decent - hit or miss. Some hostesses and waitresses are great and friendly - others seem socially awkward and unsure of themselves. It's a tri-level restaurant so the food takes a little longer to get to you because of logistical issues moving between the levels. I will say, you get a boatload of food at El Guapo's. Fajitas are pretty good, and the drinks can be great! The 60 oz Little Neddy Goes to War is a beast: a margarita with multiple coronas sticking out of it. But recently, the bartender made my friends' margaritas in the wrong glass so they had to hold their Corona bottles up the entire time they had their drink...silly errors that shouldn't happen in a restaurant that's been around as long as El Guapo's. If you have a big group and call ahead to make a reservation, they are really accommodating to groups. But El Guapo's is never on my list of restaurants downtown to pop in to.

I've been here a handful of times and each experience has been so different, that a review is a bit hard to write. There are basically two different ways to experience El Guapo: Alcohol: I really like the margaritas here. Most recently I've had the Dirty Monkey which has a punch, but is still really good. I love El Guapo because they have a ton of different margarita options and this is a place you can hang out for a long while and drink all night... when drinking all night, options are key when it comes to margaritas. They have the really pungent ones that you expect, but then a surprisingly number of really refreshing ones (I'm definitely trying the hibiscus margarita next time!) Food: Food here is in two different realms. They have the basic tex mex style (refried beans and nacho cheese) and then they have some really great fresh dishes. Most recently my husband ordered nachos for dinner (one bonus of being an adult). The nachos were wholly unimpressive. They were certainly good: smothering anything in cheesey goodness with toppings is a win... but these certainly didn't stand out. On the other hand, I ordered the shrimp tacos. AWESOME. They were packed with lettuce, cilantro and pico and the shrimp had been diced up so that you can actually eat them WITH the rest of your taco and not as they fall out. Fresh, well-cooked shrimp with flavor that were still juicy. I've actually up-ed my review to 4 stars as I was writing this. I like El Guapo because you can get the best of both worlds: typical tex-mex or unique dishes. The place does get PACKED though. On a Wednesday night, I've had 45 minute waits.. but I think the best time for El Guapo is a Saturday afternoon for lunch and day-drinking. There is a patio rooftop with fans.. but the place can get a little cramped. Service is kinda hit or miss too and if the place is slammed it can take a while to get anything (hence why Saturday afternoons are choice).

This is the second time we've frequented this restaurant. The food is always on point! Delish! But most times, poor service is a huge distraction. It was very crowded therefore we opted for the bar experience. The bartender was beyond busy. She totally disregarded the fact that we were sitting right in front of her. We had to ask for everything... Drink menus, food menus, silverware, etc. it almost felt as though, she didn't want to wait on us at all. Our glasses were dirty. And a few times, we had to flag another waitress to assist us. We had the combo of shrimp and steak fajitas....seasoned perfectly! I will give them another chance. The food out scores the service this time!

I enjoy the food and the atmosphere. Great margaritas and shrimp tacos! It's a good option for food when you're already downtown hanging out. On of my top choices for that area.

I do not know how they got that good of a rating. Their beef tasted like dog food. Chicken Chimichanga was horrible. I gave them 1 star for salsa.

I see you El Guapo's, I see you. I'm a huge fan of Mexican food and I've been searching for my go-to Mexican restaurant since moving to Tulsa. Well, I may have found the one. The general vibe and decor of El Guapo's was fantastic. I love how sprawling it was and the fact that there were like 3 stories. I sat on the top floor and had a lovely view of downtown around sunset. Which was pretty dope. In general, the environment was pretty popping for a Wednesday night. Plenty of young professionals enjoying a few drinks and a nice fall night. However, the service was still prompt and friendly. Obviously a huge plus in my book. But let's get to the important part: the food! Decently priced in my opinion for a restaurant in the downtown area. I had the smoked steak & cheese stuffed flautas, which was pretty much the meatiest cheesiest thing that I have ever tasted. Literally one of the best Mexican dishes I've had. It was COVERED in QUESO. Also, the portion was quite large, so I had some for the next day. If you've been wanting to check this place out, do it!

Hm. It can be quite frustrating when you have a place with such great potential that isn't grasping it... I've read a lot of reviews on this place. I have made it out here 3 times total and I don't think I've ever been disappointed. Slightly frustrated yes, but not disappointed. I've had most issues with just poor service but even then they do a lot better than your average establishment. There are always patrons in here being served so I guess that is a good sign. As far as the food goes, I enjoy their salsa and chips. I ordered the white queso with beef and while it is definitely over priced, it wasn't terrible. I'd order it again. They have an abundance of different drinks, especially margaritas and the ones I've tried have always been fine. I've come not to expect much out of them anywhere as they're usually a bit too sweet. I have ordered the Chilaquiles the past two times I have been here. I love them. They're rarely served at Mexican restaurants. I thing they're well made, they could use a little more cream but I always enjoy them. I see a lot of disappointment in other dishes so maybe try those! Overall this place could use some work, It is huge and they could definitely do a lot more with it than they are. Maybe work on some of the blandness of the food I hear about and get some more staff.

WARNING! Drinks are over priced and watered down!! I orders two different margaritas and didn't $17, couldn't even tell there was alcohol in them. And I passed it around to make sure it wasn't just me. We reserved a table in the roof top for a large party, they even called to confirm. But when we got there they said that the roof top was first come first serve. The waiter, a tall thin colored man, was neglectful and then passed out our tabs while we were still eating. Very disappointed.

Mediocre- you can definitely do better food-wise, although the rooftop at the downtown location is nice if the weather is good.

I am not a fan of mexican food usually- I just feel like it is all the same thing and try to avoid it, but so many people I eat with emjoy it so i make myself give it a chance. I have heard about this place before since people from Tulsa say its something we shuold all try downtown. I always knew it was a 3 story mexican place with a rooftop bar and that is enough to get me there! Ive been here twice in the last week so I guess I must enjoy it. I went the forst time on a Friday night and tried their Fish tacos and margaritas. I enjoyed all my food and was happy i got to take left overs home to eat the next day. The queso i ordered I added ground beef to as well and that made it delicious! I think it is a litle over priced for the amount of cheese you get, but I cant complain. I got the margaritas as well, just the standard house ones and they were decent. I am not a fan of margaritas since they are too sugary and seem just like pre mixed, which this one was. Can't say I am a fan but it was good with the food. The second time I went there was a Tuesday for their taco night. The pork tacos were delicious. I got 4 of them since they arw so small, but I think it was the best! definitely make sure to go Tuesdays and also early so you can get a seat. It gets packed there pretty quickly when they have deals and when its warm since they have baseball games going on.

Warm chips are great, but mediocre food, but don't buy the margaritas. They are premixed and you may not get any alcohol for your $.

  • Jason H.

Wow. Nothing can describe the absolute crap that makes up the menu. I've tried several things and each time I've been reminded of why I DO NOT like to eat here. The best you can hope for is mediocre. Yuck!

One of the best Mexican restaurants in the blue dome district. Great margaritas and great service! Love the rooftop bar in the summer :)

"Hrfuebrhdshdlshsfdnurnturlf? iwnwonfickapajgnfmehldnaticlempwofghnsh?!?!?!" That was me while stuffing my face a full as I could with the steak and cheese flautas here last night. Roughly translated: "have you ever has such good food in your entire life? I want to eat this for every meal I eat until I can't breathe from the pure state of awesomeness that washes over me when I taste it." Or something to that effect. The rooftop view of Tulsa was almost secondary. I would have preferred some quicker service, as it didn't seem very busy and my water didn't get much refill action, but that was nothing compared to how friendly our waitress was. She was very pleasant so, I can easily forgive the very first world problem of not getting a refill exactly when I want it. El Guapo's is definitely on my short list of great food places here in Tulsa.

Decent Mexican food. I shared the 42 oz. margarita with a friend, had some queso, guac, and salsa with chips, and the shrimp tacos for dinner. Everything was good, but nothing that blew me away or anything. We had a large party of about 30 probably and one server who did a really great job. I've worked in restaurants, and a party of that size on your own is not easy. Everything came out in a somewhat timely manner (understandable when you have a ton of people), and we were happy. Not the best Mexican food I've had, but it was pretty good.

El Guapo's is a really cool place in the Blue Dome district. We usually go for Taco Tuesdays - they offer really good, cheap tacos that are different but worth trying. It's often crowded, but you'll still get pretty good service. You can do this for a date night and literally spend ten or twelve dollars. The drinks are pricy and a little underwhelming. I'm a huge fan of Dos Equis lager and it never tastes right here. The restaurant has several stories, with most seating on the 1st and 2nd floors. There are areas and tables big enough if you want to come with a big group for a night out or an event at the BOK Center. I get a little claustrophobic with how jammed in they make you. Overall, I need to try more of their menu. I've only tried a few things on the regular menu (typical TexMex fare) in addition to the cheap tacos and it's all pretty darn good! They serve out decent portions on the regular menu. I recommend this restaurant for any night of the week, but especially Tuesday nights.

Descriptive phrase: solid, if a bit touristy, Mexican sit-down. I came to El Guapo's Cantina with a friend for lunch on a Sunday. It was surprisingly empty. The spot itself is a neat building located in the hip Blue Dome District, and it looked like they had a great patio area up top. However, the main floor seating area is dark (lacking windows) but decorated interestingly. The complimentary chips and salsa were salty but appreciated. I ordered the Enchiladas de Mole Poblano ($13.49). The waitress caught me off guard by double checking that I knew what mole was before ordering it, but I appreciated the attention (since it is an interesting dish, and not everyone likes it). There was plenty of chicken packed inside 3 corn tortillas, smothered in mole, crema, cheese, onions, and cilantro, served with rice and beans. The rice and beans were standard fare, but I did find the main dish to be very good. The mole was indeed a bit unique compared to others I've had ("32 ingredients"). Everyone else in the restaurant seemed to be ordering Steak and Cheese Flautas ($11.49), which were served in a giant bowl of melted cheese. Not very Mexican, but appeared to be a crowd-pleaser. El Guapo's Cantina is a good Mexican restaurant in downtown Tulsa, but didn't feel notably authentic.

El Guapo is in a really great building- the buildout is exceptional(former bordellos are hard to beat). They've got the best rooftop patio in downtown. Sadly, there's not a lot positive to be said for the food. Other than the smoked chicken chimichanga, and the chips and salsa, it's pretty much mediocre-ville. Some of the most disappointing tex mex in town. They have bars on each of three floors, and specialize in tequilas. I've found the house margarita to actually be on par, flavor-wise, with some of their top shelf margs. All in all, Guapo is decent for groups, the rooftop bar is great, stay the hell away from Taco Tuesdays, and most of the food.

This new place El Guapo's on 81st and Harvard is receiving a lot more hype than it's deserving. The food is nothing but glorified Taco Bueno food. Take for example their signature "Mexican" rice, it tastes just like it came out of a Rice A Roni box. And, their drinks aren't worth paying what they cost, because they're not given the little extra work by the bartender to give it that extra quality taste. It wouldn't be surprising if this place closed down within a couple of years, but time will only tell.

The atmosphere is really cool and different. I read reviews on Yelp before going and knew I was not going to be too impressed with the food. The one thing that fellow Yelpers suggested was the Chicken Chimichanga; I am not quite sure why they liked it so much. However they made the tortilla it felt like I was eating Chicken inside of a donut. I know that's strange but that is what I was thinking the whole time. I think it would be a neat spot for a hangout or group setting to drink and relax but do not expect much from the food.

Went here for taco Tuesday where they have carnita street tacos for $1 and let me tell you what, it's good!!! Since it was our first time we all got a "popular" dish suggested by our waitress. These dishes included the wet steak burrito, the chicken chimi, and the steak and cheese flautas - all were delectable! We all ordered some $1 tacos and they were excellent! So overall the food was good! The wait was 10 minutes, which was painless. We were seated on the roof top, which was nice! And our server was attentive and nice as well! Overall I'd go back!! Probably next Tuesday! Lol I gave only 4 stars because our first batch of chips weren't fresh and I felt like our iddy biddy bowl of guacamole was over priced at $6! AND I almost forgot, make sure you pay for your parking if you park in the lot across the street on 2nd and Elgin because our meal ended with a $25 parking ticket!! Which is completely unrelated to the restaurant experience, and 100% of our own stupidity... But still, make sure you pay!

El Guapo more like el cha cha. Walked in at 9 aND they looked at us like we were crazy! Closed at 10. Crazy place to eat. Food was good. Service was horrible. Not going to return.

Exploring downtown Tulsa on a Tuesday night? Great Taco Tuesday deals can be found here. Dollar carnitas and $2 tecate. Win.The carnitas tacos were pretty spicy and I enjoyed them thouroughly. Some of the group got margaritas - strong and well made. They also have a rooftop here if you feel like some fresh air. I definitely wish the restauraunt had loner hours.

We absolutely loved the rooftop! What a nice environment for dinner! The staff was nothing shot of great. The portions were really big and didn't re-heat that well. Minus one star for that.

My favorite thing about Guapo's is the rooftop. It is a great outdoor seating area. Definitely try and go early enough to get seated up there. Or go for lunch or afternoon drinks! I've never seen it very packed in the afternoon. The queso is excellent, and when I order the wet burrito I have leftovers for at least two more meals! There is a margarita that you can order that is GIANT (60 oz) I believe. This is great for sharing, or if you are very brave you can attempt it on your own. I have a friend who did, and he had a rough time the next morning....Don't say I didn't warn you. I came with my boyfriend once and we both ordered "Hibiscus margaritas" which were described as this really cool concoction on the menu. After we continued to sip, we concluded that it was just tequila and pink lemonade... Still yummy though!

it's so-so. I mean nothing is really bad, but nothing is really great either. everything seems to have a sweet note. the margarita was more sweet than sour, the chilaquiles have a sweeter rather than spicy red sauce. the salsa definitely has sugar added. even the charro beans were a bit sweet. fish tacos were nice.... overall just ok.

I finally got to eat here! woop woop. On Tuesdays they have a pulled pork taco for $1 which is kind of awesome. Anyway, I went with 8 other friends at 9:15 at night... I was worried they'd be a little pissed for coming so late with such a bit group, but our waitress, Shelly, was super duper sweet and very good at dealing with a massive group of cheap college students. I ordered a margarita with my bf and it was probably the best margarita I've ever tasted. Really! It tops any one I've had in Austin. Then I ordered a pulled pork taco and the chicken fajitas for the two of us to share. Of course the tacos were pretty little... they were $1, but they had a generous amount of meat on them and a really spicy sauce that I loved. They were great!!! The chicken fajitas were chicken fajitas. The meat was yummy and so were the onions and peppers, but they weren't any better than any other fajita. All in all, we had an awesome experience. Shelly was on top of everything with drinks (I don't think she had to refill anything because the cups are half the size of me... good thinking) and the salsa and the smiles and everything! She was very sweet :)

I get that everyone loves to drink on a nice day on their open-air rooftop. However, that's what makes El Guapo's a good BAR, but has little to do with it being a RESTAURANT. Unfortunately for El Guapo's, it is a restaurant first and a bar second. So, based on their rather bland food and mediocre service, I have to say they're not a good restaurant. That doesn't mean I wouldn't mind coming here for rooftop drinks with friends and perhaps enjoy some chips and salsa while I pound the cervezas down, but I'm not going to choose to eat a meal here and I'm not even sure the bar experience is worth the annoyance of parking downtown.

Mexican Cuisine

If you enjoy Taco Tuesday, then you have officially fallen in love with the Mexican Food. The main grain of Mexican cuisine is maize. Also known as corn, maize is grown for the past 9000 years after the crop was discovered by the people in Mayan civilization. Mexican empire flourished when they started growing beans, tomatoes, chili pepper, sweet potato and cactus. Till this date these ingredients are used in cooking authentic Mexican dishes and drinks.

Great use of spices, fresh chili pepper dishes like fajitas, tortilla chips, corn chips, salsa, chimichangas, burritos, nachos and quesadillas are invented in America. But when you are looking for authentic Mexican food then you must find a restaurant in the city that serves Rajas con Queso, Garbanzo in a Guajillo Chile Sauce, Pork Filled Chiles Rellenos, Chiles en Nogada, Molcajete Salsa, Pico de Gallo and Frijoles de la Olla. An eye-opening fact – Mexican don't like their food hot. They use fresh chili and other spices to create a flavor that lingers in your mouth.

Mexican food is great for those who are Gluten Intolerant as they use Corn instead of wheat in most of their dishes. Also, you can easily find many beans based Mexican dishes. Another dish which didn't get similar glory as tacos or nachos is the Mexican hot chocolate. If you love something hot on a chilly day, then go for Mexican Hot Chocolate. On merry days, you can enjoy the authentic Mexican Drinks like Tequila, Mezcal, Tecuí, Sotol, Bacanora, Charanda, Posh O Pox, Puebla and Pulque. Mexican Cuisine is for people who enjoy strong drinks and hearty meals.
