    In the sunny state of Oklahoma, there is often some confusion between "Mexican food" and "Tex-Mex." While La Catrina does have many dishes that would satisfy one's Tex-Mex cravings, this is a restaurant geared much more toward traditional Mexican food. For that reason, I recommend trying La Catrina for a Mexican food experience that's a bit different than the dime-a-dozen Tex-Mex restaurants. The set up comes with chips, salsa, queso, tortillas and relish, but with these portion sizes, you'll wish you hadn't filled up on chips!

    I have the opportunity to work in OKC every few years and this restaurant has been one of my favorites since it was "Diegos." I had a recent opportunity to revisit the place and noticed that it has been renamed La Catrina. The name has changed, but the food is still just as good. Don't be scared away by the "La Catrina" skeleton motif. It's not a Caribbean pirate bar or a goth bar. Take a chance and go inside and learn the story of "La Calavera Catrina." The restaurant is neither "dumpy" or "trendy." Just a casual place to eat great food. Also don't go in expecting standard tex-mex. The menu leans more to Mexico mexican food, with just a nod to tex-mex. Quality ingredients, well prepared and generous portions. Be sure to get some Salsa Calvillo to enjoy before and during your meal. Add a Mexican cerveza, and you've got a meal that's hard to beat. I'm looking forward to my next trip to OKC.

    Great authentic Mexican food. Service was a little slow, but not for lack of them hustling. Note they seem to be lacking a liquor license. Only wine and beer.

    The outside of La Catrina is a bit nondescript. It looks like a small house covered with ivy and if it didn't have a great sign you would pass it up. But definitely don't pass it up! The inside is light and airy. The furniture is wicker and seems like outdoor furniture, but it somehow fits the ambiance of the place. Now onto the food. The food has been made for mass appeal so it can be a little bland. But (and this is important!) they will add extra spice for you, and then the food is delicious. The salsa they provide you is very fresh, but if you like spice, I recommend asking for a hotter salsa. There is a possibility you will breathe fire, but it is awesome. I've had two different meals there and both of them were great. Last time I was there I enjoyed the Burro (maybe misspelling that) which was shredded beef encased in a flour tortilla covered with a chili sauce. I think the chili sauce was overkill unless you are starving but the whole thing was yummy overall. I will definitely be returning to La Catrina.

    Never say never! I made a return visit because we were working late and not too many places open after 8pm. I wanted sushi, but Tim wanted something else. As we drove down 23rd, we stopped at La Catrina and gave them another whirl. This was my second time and probably my last due to my significant others weak stomach. Boo to that! :( Not only did he get sick to his stomach, but he found a piece of hair in his pozole. I freely point this out because... Well... It is kind of gross and just something patrons need to watch out for. I know swallowing hair is the least of your worries, but hey. You were warned. I, on the other hand, rather enjoyed my gorditas and queso! Big shocker there. I normally do not like (hate is too strong of a word to be used in this situation) queso, but this time around, it was enjoyable. The filling inside my gordita had almost the same flavor or spices as the pozole, which was a little peculiar. Conclusion? I like the menu variety, but the food is just okay.

    Went here for an early lunch... the best part of this place was the decor! The food was alright for a mexican place, however the service was seriously lacking. We ended up getting a refill on our drinks after we finished eating and were ready for our checks.

    The tea was very thin basically, slightly flavored water. The food was ok but, was a little pricey for the taste. Portions were where large, they could fill anyone. I don't see us returning to this resturant.

    My friend and I were huge fans of Diego's so we decided to come try their new menu and see the newly remodeled dining room. I ordered the exact same thing I ordered when this place was still Diego's: the Mexican dinner. What I got did not taste the same. Most of the items on my plate was pretty bland. I tried as hard as I could to finish everything since I was paying $13 for it. My friend ordered the tortas ahogadas which was a sandwich submerged in a chili pepper sauce. She basically paid 11 bucks for a soggy sandwich. The salsa wasn't great either. It didn't have much flavor. The queso was ok. I liked the old dining room better. The new furniture looks like it's meant for the patio with its wicker material. Service was friendly like it has always been. However, we were a bit disappointed with the food.

    Diego's decided to give themselves a much deserved makeover and reinvent themselves as La Catrina, which is much more fun to say if you ask me. They actually did extensive market research when debating what to change the name to, and La Catrina was an overwhelming favorite with the focus groups. I just made that up. Diego's used to be my go-to spot for Mexican in the metro, and I'm happy to report that La Catrina will continue to be that go-to spot, offering up many of the same dishes that were on Diego's menu, as well as some new authentic dishes to try. The interior has been completely redone and it's just got a great feel to it. The staff is always very friendly and I'm never disappointed with the food. You really can't go wrong with any of the dishes - one of my favorites is Jr.'s Special: beef, chicken, and shrimp guiso all topped with guac, cheese, and pico. It's OH-SO-GOOT!, especially when you can't make up your mind because it is a good blend of everything. I'm not really sure what "guiso" translates to, it's a common item on the menu, but whatever the hell it is, it's delicious and makes me want to name my first born Guiso... but then I'd be reminded of La Catrina's menu and I'd get an incurable desire for Mexican food every time I saw him or her... so probably won't end up doing that, but the point is: it's good stuff. Just like Diego's they still offer plenty of seafood options which gains two thumbs up in my books - their fish tacos are the jam, give them a try if you're a fish taco fan. And if you like tequila, hell even if you don't like tequila, try one of their margaritas, you won't regret it.... until the next morning. La Catrina, you complete me. Overall Grade: A-

    My husband and I live super close to La Catrina, and finally got over there for lunch today. We weren't sure what to expect, but it surpassed every hope we had. They provide complimentary chips, salsa, queso, and a sopailla for dessert with every entree you buy. The salsa tasted fresh, although there was some ingredient that I didn't care for, and couldn't put my finger on. My husband enjoyed the salsa, though, so I suppose it was just a quirk. The queso was also good, if a little watery. Our entrees were great- he had a burrito with fajita steak as the filling, and I had tamales. The rice and beans tasted fresh, and we both commented it was the first time in a long time we finished our sides at a Mexican restaurant. My tamales were good, but not outstanding- great flavor, but not a perfect tamale. The steak in his burrito was excellent, very juicy and not too greasy. There was no extra filler in the burrito either- something we haven't seen in a long time. Service was fine- the guy was very nice, and our water was refilled quickly and easily. We'll be returning soon, and highly recommend it!

    Absolutely excellent!!!! I have been here twice for lunch. The chicken quesadilla and chicken chimichanga are the best I've had at any local restaurant. Definitely a must try!! Mexican food that actually has flavor!! Finally!

    Maybe it was an off night. We had lackluster service. To be fair, we went out to eat to escape a fairly disappointing day. After finding out some bad news, and subsequently rear-ending a stranger on our way to batting practice, the last thing I wanted to do was go home and cook dinner. So, Mexican food (which everyone loves) close to home seemed to be a no-brainer. I don't expect restaurants to solve ALL my problems, but I do hope to be greeted with a friendly face, considering I'm going to be dining in your establishment for the subsequent hour or so. That makes it more fun or tolerable, however you prefer, no? My first impression of our waitress was that she was grumpy... then I thought she was not entirely comfortable speaking English... then I realized she simply didn't have much personality (not last night, anyway). By the end of our dining experience, all attempts on my part to be friendly, despite my exhaustion on a particularly yucky day, evaporated into thin air, much like the aroma coming off my platter of shrimp fajitas. Which brings me to the food: the kids seemed to like it (protesting even when I told them afterwards that we probably wouldn't be back). I think the beans and rice were fine. The queso, fine. The chicken fingers (yep, kid menu) were run of the mill, and the sour cream sauce on the cheese enchiladas had an extraterrestrial glow. Yikes. My shrimp fajitas were mostly onions (I love onions), with maybe a sliver or two of bell pepper in there somewhere. Everything was cooked fine, but there just wasn't much flavor. I had the leftovers for dinner tonight, and a hit or two of salt and cilantro improved the fajita filling considerably. I really liked the chairs and the promise of this place, but the disinterest shown by our server and the manager, who looked my way a few times but mainly was bent over staring at his smartphone screen instead of circulating and checking on guests, was a bummer. La Catrina is fine. Sadly, the authenticity of the menu (I must say, lots of interesting plates) doesn't make up for the indifference we experienced last night.

    One of my eternal battles in the state of Oklahoma is finding decent Mexican food that is Mex without the Tex. It's not that I hate Tex-Mex; it's that Mex sans Tex is just better. And La Catrina delivers. I had a lovely meal of shrimp fajitas complete with corn tortillas, rice, beans + cheese, and all the accessories of guacamole, sour cream, and lettuce. Top it off with Corona and lime, I was quite happy with my meal. I liked the ambiance of the restaurant -- the decor is Dios de los Muertos themed, which is a nice touch. For a Friday night, it was very quiet, but that was fine by me. Our waitress was nice and pleasant, but I wouldn't call the service absolutely stellar. My only quibble is that the vegetarian options were pretty lacking. There were only 2 options under the vegetarian section of the menu, which surprised me because Mexican food is by far one of the easiest to get a lot of veg options out of. There wasn't even a vegetarian fajitas option on the menu -- I suppose maybe if I had asked for it, but not a huge concern since I am technically follow a pescetarian diet. It just struck me as odd. Either way, La Catrina hit the spot for me. I'd definitely stop by again next time I'm in the neighborhood with a hankering for not-Tex-Mex.

    Good food waitress so friendly I really recommend this place if you are here in Oklahoma City. The other good thing is the drink garrison they have tequila but they are so good.

    So we were hungry for Mexican food and decided to try La Catrina. We were not disappointed. I ordered the pozole soup and the enchilada rojas and they both were very good. The enchiladas had a wonderful red chile flavor as did the pazole. My daughter had the tortilla soup and really liked it-not to spicy. My husband had the mixiotes which is a Las Catrina specialty and really like it- I tasted the meat and it was amazing! Only two negatives- service was a bit slow and my enchiladas were not as warm temperature wise as I like. Small issues that doesn't prevent us from making this restaurant our new favorite for mexican food!! The portions are huge so we all have enough for lunch tomorrow! Prices were reasonable too! I would definitely recommend La Catrina to my friends!

    Decent food. the decor was pretty typical of a mexican place, very kitchy, and the furniture was a bit strange. One thing I can say is that the queso isn't great, but it is free.

    La Catrina is one of the best Mexican restaurant in Oklahoma City. My boyfriend and I have been coming here for over a year, and we've never had a bad experience. The staff is friendly, and the tamales are the best you can get anywhere: I was told they are made from scratch in-house. They also have a great lunch special. It's $7 for a huge combo with rice and beans, and all you can eat chips, salsa, queso, and tortillas. They also have great margaritas, and an especially delicious Mexican drink I had never had before that's served in a clay cup called a cantarito, which consists of tequila, squirt, and lemon/lime. It's really a shame that this place doesn't stay more busy, considering it's such a great value for such awesome food, but I love La Catrina and can't recommend it enough.

    I really like this place. It used to be Diego's, but for whatever reason, they changed the name. I've been a couple of times and everything I've had has been solid. The goods: 1) Good performance, every time. 2) Easy to get to 3) Ample seating and minimal crowd. the bad: 1) the staff was still feeling things out, but I won't hold it against em.
